Abstract

The latitudinal diversity gradient (LDG) is one of the most recognized global patterns of species richness exhibited across a wide range of taxa. Numerous hypotheses have been proposed in the past two centuries to explain LDG, but rigorous tests of the drivers of LDGs have been limited by a lack of high-quality global species richness data. Here we produce a high-resolution (0.025° × 0.025°) map of local tree species richness using a global forest inventory database with individual tree information and local biophysical characteristics from ~1.3 million sample plots. We then quantify drivers of local tree species richness patterns across latitudes. Generally, annual mean temperature was a dominant predictor of tree species richness, which is most consistent with the metabolic theory of biodiversity (MTB). However, MTB underestimated LDG in the tropics, where high species richness was also moderated by topographic, soil and anthropogenic factors operating at local scales. Given that local landscape variables operate synergistically with bioclimatic factors in shaping the global LDG pattern, we suggest that MTB be extended to account for co-limitation by subordinate drivers. © 2022, The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Nature Limited.

Abstract

OBJECTIVE: To document maternal and foetal morbidity and mortality in anticoagulated, pregnant patients with mechanical heart valves until 42 days post-partum. METHODS: In a tertiary single-centre, prospective cohort, 178 consecutive patients at the cardiac-obstetric clinic were screened for warfarin use between 1 July 2010 and 31 December 2015. Of 33 pregnancies identified, 29 were included. Patients received intravenous unfractionated heparin from six to 12 weeks’ gestation and peripartum, and warfarin from 12 to 36 weeks. Maternal outcomes including death, major haemorrhage and thrombosis, and foetal outcomes were documented. RESULTS: There were two maternal deaths, five returns to theatre post-delivery, eight patients transfused, six major haemorrhages, one case of infective endocarditis and three ischaemic strokes. Ten pregnancies had poor foetal outcomes (six miscarriages, three terminations, one early neonatal death). Twenty patients required more than 30 days’ hospitalisation, and 15 required three or more admissions. HIV positivity was associated with surgical delivery (p = 0.0017). CONCLUSIONS: Complication rates were high despite centralised care.

Abstract

Ninety-five percent of orchid species associated with fynbos shrublands of South Africa's Cape Floristic Kingdom have been assessed for the IUCN Red List, yet aspects of their demography and population biology remain poorly understood. We conducted a 6-year demographic study of the Critically Endangered Disa procera, a cryptic, terrestrial species from South Africa with a global population of c. 50 individuals known from a single location. We aimed to provide management recommendations that would facilitate its persistence. Our findings indicate that the population of D. procera is larger than previously thought, and the species occurs at two distinct locations. These orchids exhibit high interannual variation in population size and turnover of individuals, potentially indicative of a species with a short life span, and still meet the criteria for Critically Endangered status. The species benefits from disturbances, such as brush cutting along trails, or fire, which open up clearances in the vegetation. However, physical damage to plants during their aboveground growing season (September–January) is particularly detrimental and should be avoided in habitat management for the species. Fire had beneficial effects at the population and individual levels and is recommended at 10–25-year intervals, outside the orchid's growing season. The species exhibited comparatively high rates of fruit set (68%), suggesting that pollination limitation does not currently constrain its performance. Its patchy distribution may, however, indicate constraints on dispersal or recruitment. We recommend that management strategies should include continued protection and monitoring of both populations, studies on pollination, habitat requirements and mycorrhizal associates, and a prescribed disturbance regime. Målet med dette studiet er å finne en modell for praksis for grunnskolelærerstudenter som i større grad tetter gapet mellom teori og praksis. Refleksjonsseminar og tur –retur praksis ble prøvd ut, for å utdanne studenter som er bedre skikket til å møte framtidens yrkesliv. Studentene fikk praksis på to praksisskoler i stedet for fire. Semistrukturerte intervjuer med en triangulering av data fra studenter, praksislærere, rektorer og høgskoleansatte ble gjennomført. Dataen ble analysert ved induktiv innholdsanalyse. Resultatene fremhever fire kategorier som fremmer studentenes pedagogiske innsikt: En bedre tilknytning mellom teori og praksis, refleksjonsseminar, økt pedagogisk innsikt igjennom å forstå sin egen rolle, og mer tid til pedagogisk arbeid i klasserommet. Refleksjonsseminarene gjorde studentene mer selvstendige og autonome i sine refleksjoner og yrkesutførelse, samt at jevnbyrdigheten med lærerne og rektor på praksisskolene økte.

Abstract

Background: The Norwegian framework for teacher education serves to both provide a pathway for professional qualification and lay a foundation for educators to meet present and future challenges. Complementing work with teacher educators in the university classroom, a key focus of the framework is pre-service teaching practice, which aims to increase student teachers' knowledge, skills, and competencies via a triangular partnership among student teachers and teacher educators both in pre-service teaching practice and on campus. The aim of the study was to interview student teachers to investigate how their pre-service teaching practice can be better organized to meet these goals. Methods: Our data is based on six semistructured interviews and one focus group with six student teachers situated at the Oslo and Akershus University College and analyzed using inductive content analysis. The study was approved at the Norwegian Data Directorate. Results: The analysis revealed five categories that influence student teachers` pedagogical insight through pre-service teaching practice. These five categories were: Reflection plenaries on regular basis, the understanding of the relationship between theory and practice, teacher educators as mentors, and different competence and asymmetry in the mentoring process. Conclusions: To optimize pedagogical insight through pre-service teaching practice, our results emphasize the need to ensure quality throughout pre-service teacher training and clear guidelines for teacher educators. In particular, our sample of student teachers sought greater supervision and focus from teacher educators on the relationship between theory and practice, via use of reflection plenaries, and found most helpful pedagogical context that emphasized equal partnership with their teacher educators.
