Search

Disentangling the radio flux contribution from star formation (SF) and active-galactic-nuclei (AGN) activity is a long-standing problem in extragalactic astronomy, since at frequencies of $\lesssim$ 10 GHz, both processes emit synchrotron radiation. We present in this work the general objectives of the PARADIGM Project, a multi-instrument concept to explore star-formation and mass assembly of galaxies. We introduce two novel general approaches for a detailed multiscale study of the radio emission in local U/LIRGs. In this work, we use archival interferometric data from the Very Large Array (VLA) centred at ~ 6 GHz (C band) and present new observations from the e-Multi-Element Radio-Linked Interferometer Network (e-MERLIN) for UGC5101, VV705, VV250 and UGC8696. Using our image decomposition methods, we robustly disentangle the radio emission into distinct components by combining information from the two interferometric arrays. We use e-MERLIN as a probe of the core-compact radio emission (AGN or starburst) at ~ 20 pc scales, and as a probe of nuclear diffuse emission, at scales ~ 100 - 200 pc. With VLA, we characterise the source morphology and the flux density on scales from 200 pc up to and above 1 kpc. As a result, we find deconvolved and convolved sizes for nuclear regions from ~ 10 pc to ~ 200 pc. At larger scales, we find sizes of 1.5 - 2 kpc for diffuse structures (with effective sizes of ~ 300 - 400 pc). We demonstrate that the radio emission from nuclear extended structures (~ 100 pc) can dominate over core-compact components, providing a significant fraction of the total multiscale SF output. We establish a multiscale radio tracer for star formation by combining information from different instruments. The OH Megamaser emission in the merging galaxy Arp220 has been re-observed with the Multi-Element Radio Linked Interferometer Network (MERLIN) and the European VLBI Network (EVN). Imaging results of the OH line emission at the two nuclei are found to be consistent with earlier observations and confirm additional extended emission structures surrounding the nuclei. Detailed information about the distributed emission components around the two nuclei has been obtained using a concatenated MERLIN and EVN database with intermediate (40 mas) spatial resolution. Continuum imaging shows a relatively compact West nucleus and a more extended East nucleus in addition to an extended continuum ridge stretching below and beyond the two nuclei. Spectral line imaging show extended emission regions at both nuclei together with compact components and additional weaker components north and south of the West nucleus. Spectral line analysis indicates that the dominant OH line emission originates in foreground molecular material that is part of a large-scale molecular structure that engulfs the whole nuclear region. Compact OH components are representative of star formation regions within the two nearly edge-on nuclei and define the systemic velocities of East and West as 5425 km/s and 5360 km/s. The foreground material at East and West has a 100 km/s lower velocity at 5314 and 5254 km/s. These emission results confirm a maser amplification scenario where the background continuum and the line emission of the star formation regions are amplified by foreground masering material that is excited by the FIR radiation field originating in the two nuclear regions., Comment: 17 pages, 18 figures

High-mass stars are thought to accumulate much of their mass via short, infrequent bursts of disk-aided accretion. Such accretion events are rare and difficult to observe directly but are known to drive enhanced maser emission. In this Letter we report high-resolution, multi-epoch methanol maser observations toward G358.93-0.03 which reveal an interesting phenomenon; the sub-luminal propagation of a thermal radiation "heat-wave" emanating from an accreting high-mass proto-star. The extreme transformation of the maser emission implies a sudden intensification of thermal infrared radiation from within the inner (40 mas, 270 au) region. Subsequently, methanol masers trace the radial passage of thermal radiation through the environment at $\geq$ 4-8\% the speed of light. Such a high translocation rate contrasts with the $\leq$ 10 km s$^{-1}$ physical gas motions of methanol masers typically observed using very long baseline interferometry (VLBI). The observed scenario can readily be attributed to an accretion event in the high-mass proto-star G358.93-0.03-MM1. While being the third case in its class, G358.93-0.03-MM1 exhibits unique attributes hinting at a possible `zoo' of accretion burst types. These results promote the advantages of maser observations in understanding high-mass star formation, both through single-dish maser monitoring campaigns and via their international cooperation as VLBI arrays., Comment: Published in Nature Astronomy in 2020

What determines the nuclear radio emission in local galaxies? We combine optical [O III] line emission, robust black hole (BH) mass estimates, and high-resolution e-MERLIN 1.5-GHz data, from the LeMMINGs survey, of a statistically-complete sample of 280 nearby, optically active (LINER and Seyfert) and inactive HII and Absorption line galaxies [ALG]) galaxies. Using [O III] luminosity ($L_{\rm [O~III]}$) as a proxy for the accretion power, local galaxies follow distinct sequences in the optical-radio planes of BH activity, which suggest different origins of the nuclear radio emission for the optical classes. The 1.5-GHz radio luminosity of their parsec-scale cores ($L_{\rm core}$) is found to scale with BH mass ($M_{\rm BH}$) and [O~III] luminosity. Below $M_{\rm BH} \sim$10$^{6.5}$ M$_{\odot}$, stellar processes from non-jetted HII galaxies dominate with $L_{\rm core} \propto M_{\rm BH}^{0.61\pm0.33}$ and $L_{\rm core} \propto L_{\rm [O~III]}^{0.79\pm0.30}$. Above $M_{\rm BH} \sim$10$^{6.5}$ M$_{\odot}$, accretion-driven processes dominate with $L_{\rm core} \propto M_{\rm BH}^{1.5-1.65}$ and $L_{\rm core} \propto L_{\rm [O~III]}^{0.99-1.31}$ for active galaxies: radio-quiet/loud LINERs, Seyferts and jetted HII galaxies always display (although low) signatures of radio-emitting BH activity, with $L_{\rm 1.5\, GHz}\gtrsim$10$^{19.8}$ W Hz$^{-1}$ and $M_{\rm BH}\gtrsim10^{7}$ M$_{\odot}$, on a broad range of Eddington-scaled accretion rates ($\dot{m}$). Radio-quiet and radio-loud LINERs are powered by low-$\dot{m}$ discs launching sub-relativistic and relativistic jets, respectively. Low-power slow jets and disc/corona winds from moderately high to high-$\dot{m}$ discs account for the compact and edge-brightened jets of Seyferts, respectively. Jetted HII galaxies may host weakly active BHs. Fuel-starved BHs and recurrent activity account for ALG properties. The Arecibo Observatory (AO) is a multidisciplinary research and education facility that is recognized worldwide as a leading facility in astronomy, planetary, and atmospheric and space sciences. AO's cornerstone research instrument was the 305-m William E. Gordon telescope. On December 1, 2020, the 305-m telescope collapsed and was irreparably damaged. In the three weeks following the collapse, AO's scientific and engineering staff and the AO users community initiated extensive discussions on the future of the observatory. The community is in overwhelming agreement that there is a need to build an enhanced, next-generation radar-radio telescope at the AO site. From these discussions, we established the set of science requirements the new facility should enable. These requirements can be summarized briefly as: 5 MW of continuous wave transmitter power at 2 - 6 GHz, 10 MW of peak transmitter power at 430 MHz (also at 220MHz under consideration), zenith angle coverage 0 to 48 deg, frequency coverage 0.2 to 30 GHz and increased Field-of-View. These requirements determine the unique specifications of the proposed new instrument. The telescope design concept we suggest consists of a compact array of fixed dishes on a tiltable, plate-like structure with a collecting area equivalent to a 300m dish. This concept, referred to as the Next Generation Arecibo Telescope (NGAT), meets all of the desired specifications and provides significant new science capabilities to all three research groups at AO. We present the second data release of high-resolution ($\leq0.2$ arcsec) 1.5-GHz radio images of 177 nearby galaxies from the Palomar sample, observed with the e-MERLIN array, as part of the LeMMINGs (Legacy e-MERLIN Multi-band Imaging of Nearby Galaxy Sample) survey. Together with the 103 targets of the first LeMMINGs data release, this represents a complete sample of 280 local active (LINER and Seyfert) and inactive galaxies HII galaxies and Absorption Line Galaxies, ALG). This large program is the deepest radio survey of the local Universe, $\gtrsim$10$^{17.6}$ W Hz$^{-1}$, regardless of the host and nuclear type: we detect radio emission $\gtrsim$0.25 mJy beam$^{-1}$ for 125/280 galaxies (44.6 per cent) with sizes of typically $\lesssim$100 pc. Of those 125, 106 targets show a core which coincides within 1.2 arcsec with the optical nucleus. Although we observed mostly cores, around one third of the detected galaxies features jetted morphologies. The detected radio core luminosities of the sample range between $\sim$10$^{34}$ and 10$^{40}$ erg s$^{-1}$. LINERs and Seyferts are the most luminous sources, whereas HII galaxies are the least. LINERs show FRI-like core-brightened radio structures, while Seyferts reveal the highest fraction of symmetric morphologies. The majority of HII galaxies have single radio core or complex extended structures, which probably conceal a nuclear starburst and/or a weak active nucleus (seven of them show clear jets). This paper reports observations of a 22 GHz water maser `superburst' in the G25.65+1.05 massive star forming region, conducted in response to an alert from the Maser Monitoring Organisation (M2O). Very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) observations using the European VLBI Network (EVN) recorded a maser flux density of $1.2 \times 10^{4}$ Jy. The superburst was investigated in the spectral, structural and temporal domains and its cause was determined to be an increase in maser path length generated by the superposition of multiple maser emitting regions aligning in the line of sight to the observer. This conclusion was based on the location of the bursting maser in the context of the star forming region, its complex structure, and its rapid onset and decay.

We report the detection of new 12.178, 12.229, 20.347, and 23.121 GHz methanol masers in the massive star-forming region G358.93-0.03, which are flaring on similarly short timescales (days) as the 6.668 GHz methanol masers also associated with this source. The brightest 12.178 GHz channel increased by a factor of over 700 in just 50 d. The masers found in the 12.229 and 20.347 GHz methanol transitions are the first ever reported and this is only the fourth object to exhibit associated 23.121 GHz methanol masers. The 12.178 GHz methanol maser emission appears to have a higher flux density than that of the 6.668 GHz emission, which is unusual. A multi-wavelength analysis of the large Galactic infrared bubble N 24 is has been presented in this paper in order to investigate the molecular and star formation environment around expanding HII regions. Using archival data from Herschel and ATLASGAL, the distribution and physical properties of the dust over the entire bubble are studied. Twenty three dense clumps are identified using the Clumpfind2d algorithm with sizes and masses in the range 0.65-1.73 pc and 600-16300 Msun, respectively. To analyse the molecular environment in N 24, observations of NH3 (1,1) and (2,2) were carried out using the Nanshan 26m radio telescope. Analysis of the kinetic temperature and gravitational stability of these clumps suggests gravitational collapse in several of them. The mass-size distributions of the clumps and the presence of massive young protostars indicate that the shell of N 24 is a region of ongoing massive star formation. The compatibility of the dynamical and fragmentation time-scales and the overabundance of YSOs and clumps on the rim suggest that the collect and collapse mechanism is in play at the boundary of the bubble, but the existence of the IRDC at the edge of bubble indicates that radiation-driven implosion mechanism may also have played a role there., Comment: Accepted for publication in Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society

An unbiased search of molecular outflows within the region of the COHRS survey has identified 157 high-mass outflows from a sample of 770 ATLASGAL clumps with a detection rate of 20\%. The detection rate of outflows increases for clumps with higher M$_{clump}$, L$_{bol}$, L$_{bol}$/M$_{clump}$, N$_{H_{2}}$, and T$_{dust}$ compared to the clumps with no outflow. The detection rates of the outflow increases from protostellar (8\%) to YSO clump (17\%) and to MSF clump (29\%). The detection rate 26\% for quiescent clump is preliminary, because the sample of quiescent clumps is small. A statistical relation between the outflow and clump masses for our sample is $\log(M_{out}/M_{\bigodot}) = (-1.1\pm0.21) + (0.9\pm0.07)\log(M_{clump}/M_{\bigodot})$. The detection rate of outflows and the outflow mass-loss rate show an increase with increasing M$_{clump}$, L$_{bol}$, N$_{H_{2}}$, and T$_{dust}$, which indicates that clumps with outflow with higher parameter values are at a more advanced evolutionary stage. The outflow mechanical force increases with increasing bolometric luminosities. NGC 4945 is one of the nearest (~3.8 Mpc; 1" ~ 19 pc) starburst galaxies. ALMA band 3 (3--4\,mm) observations of HCN, HCO+, CS, C3H2, SiO, HCO, and CH3C2H were carried out with ~2" resolution. The lines reveal a rotating nuclear disk of projected size 10" x 2" with position angle ~45 deg, inclination ~75 deg and an unresolved bright central core of size <2.5". The continuum source (mostly free-free radiation) is more compact than the nuclear disk by a linear factor of two but shows the same position angle and is centered 0.39" +_ 0.14" northeast of the nuclear accretion disk defined by H2O maser emission. Outside the nuclear disk, both HCN and CS delineate molecular arms on opposite sides of the dynamical center. These are connected by a (deprojected) 0.6 kpc sized molecular bridge, likely a dense gaseous bar seen almost ends-on, shifting gas from the front and back side into the nuclear disk. Modeling this nuclear disk located farther inside <100 pc) with tilted rings indicates a coplanar outflow reaching a characteristic deprojectd velocity of ~50 km/s. All our molecular lines, with the notable exception of CH3C2H, show significant absorption near the systemic velocity (~571 km/s), within a range of ~500-660 km/s. Apparently, only molecular transitions with low critical H2-density do not show absorption. The velocity field of the nuclear disk, derived from CH3C2H, provides evidence for rigid rotation in the inner few arcseconds and a dynamical mass of M = (2.1+_0.2) x 10^8 Mo inside a galactocentric radius of 2.45", with a significantly flattened rotation curve farther out. We present the first VLBI observations of a Galactic water maser (in Chepeus A) made with a very long baseline interferometric array involving the RadioAstron Earth-orbiting satellite station as one of its elements. We detected two distinct components at -16.9 and 0.6 km/s with a fringe spacing of 66 microarcseconds. In total power, the 0.6 km/s component appears to be a single Gaussian component of strength 580 Jy and width of 0.7 km/s. Single-telescope monitoring showed that its lifetime was only 8~months. The absence of a Zeeman pattern implies the longitudinal magnetic field component is weaker than 120 mG. The space-Earth cross power spectrum shows two unresolved components smaller than 15 microarcseconds, corresponding to a linear scale of 1.6 x 10^11 cm, about the diameter of the Sun, for a distance of 700 pc, separated by 0.54 km/s in velocity and by 160 +/-35 microarcseconds in angle. This is the smallest angular structure ever observed in a Galactic maser. The brightness temperatures are greater than 2 x 10^14K, and the line widths are 0.5 km/s. Most of the flux (about 87%) is contained in a halo of angular size of 400 +/- 150 microarcseconds. This structure is associated with the compact HII region HW3diii. We have probably picked up the most prominent peaks in the angular size range of our interferometer. We discuss three dynamical models: (1) Keplerian motion around a central object, (2) two chance overlapping clouds, and (3) vortices caused by flow around an obstacle (i.e., von Karman vortex street) with Strouhal number of about~0.3., Comment: 15 pages, 9 figures. Observations of the masers in the course of RadioAstron mission yielded detections of fringes for a number of sources in both water and hydroxyl maser transitions. Several sources display numerous ultra-compact details. This proves that implementation of the space VLBI technique for maser studies is possible technically and is not always prevented by the interstellar scattering, maser beaming and other effects related to formation, transfer, and detection of the cosmic maser emission. For the first time, cosmic water maser emission was detected with projected baselines exceeding Earth Diameter. It was detected in a number of star-forming regions in the Galaxy and megamaser galaxies NGC 4258 and NGC 3079. RadioAstron observations provided the absolute record of the angular resolution in astronomy. Fringes from the NGC 4258 megamaser were detected on baseline exceeding 25 Earth Diameters. This means that the angular resolution sufficient to measure the parallax of the water maser source in the nearby galaxy LMC was directly achieved in the cosmic maser observations. Very compact features with angular sizes about 20 microarcsec have been detected in star-forming regions of our Galaxy. Corresponding linear sizes are about 5-10 million kilometers. So, the major step from milli- to micro-arcsecond resolution in maser studies is done in the RadioAstron mission. The existence of the features with extremely small angular sizes is established. Deep galaxy surveys have revealed that the global star formation rate (SFR) density in the Universe peaks at 1 < z < 2 and sharply declines towards z = 0. But a clear picture of the underlying processes, in particular the evolution of cold atomic (~100 K) and molecular gas phases, that drive such a strong evolution is yet to emerge. MALS is designed to use MeerKAT's L- and UHF-band receivers to carry out the most sensitive (N(HI)>10$^{19}$ cm$^{-2}$) dust-unbiased search of intervening HI 21-cm and OH 18-cm absorption lines at 0 < z < 2. This will provide reliable measurements of the evolution of cold atomic and molecular gas cross-sections of galaxies, and unravel the processes driving the steep evolution in the SFR density. The large sample of HI and OH absorbers obtained from the survey will (i) lead to tightest constraints on the fundamental constants of physics, and (ii) be ideally suited to probe the evolution of magnetic fields in disks of galaxies via Zeeman Splitting or Rotation Measure synthesis. The survey will also provide an unbiased census of HI and OH absorbers, i.e. cold gas associated with powerful AGNs (>10$^{24}$ W Hz$^{-1}$) at 0 < z < 2, and will simultaneously deliver a blind HI and OH emission line survey, and radio continuum survey. We have observed 104 gravitationally-lensed quasars at $z\sim1-4$ with Herschel/SPIRE, the largest such sample ever studied. By targeting gravitational lenses, we probe intrinsic far-infrared (FIR) luminosities and star formation rates (SFRs) more typical of the population than the extremely luminous sources that are otherwise accessible. We detect 72 objects with Herschel/SPIRE and find 66 percent (69 sources) of the sample have spectral energy distributions (SEDs) characteristic of dust emission. For 53 objects with sufficiently constrained SEDs, we find a median effective dust temperature of $38^{+12}_{-5}$ K. By applying the radio-infrared correlation, we find no evidence for an FIR excess which is consistent with star-formation-heated dust. We derive a median magnification-corrected FIR luminosity of $3.6^{+4.8}_{-2.4}~\times 10^{11}~{\rm L_{\odot}}$ and median SFR of $120^{+160}_{-80}~{\rm M_{\odot}~yr^{-1}}$ for 94 quasars with redshifts. We find $\sim10$ percent of our sample have FIR properties similar to typical dusty star-forming galaxies at $z\sim2-3$ and a range of SFRs $<20-10000~{\rm M_{\odot}~yr^{-1}}$ for our sample as a whole. These results are in line with current models of quasar evolution and suggests a coexistence of dust-obscured star formation and AGN activity is typical of most quasars. We do not find a statistically-significant difference in the FIR luminosities of quasars in our sample with a radio excess relative to the radio-infrared correlation. In this work, we aim to characterise high-mass clumps with infall motions. We selected 327 clumps from the Millimetre Astronomy Legacy Team 90-GHz (MALT90) survey, and identified 100 infall candidates. Combined with the results of He et al. (2015), we obtained a sample of 732 high-mass clumps, including 231 massive infall candidates and 501 clumps where infall is not detected. Objects in our sample were classified as pre-stellar, proto-stellar, HII or photo-dissociation region (PDR). The detection rates of the infall candidates in the pre-stellar, proto-stellar, HII and PDR stages are 41.2%, 36.6%, 30.6% and 12.7%, respectively. The infall candidates have a higher H$_{2}$ column density and volume density compared with the clumps where infall is not detected at every stage. For the infall candidates, the median values of the infall rates at the pre-stellar, proto-stellar, HII and PDR stages are 2.6$\times$10$^{-3}$, 7.0$\times$10$^{-3}$, 6.5$\times$10$^{-3}$ and 5.5$\times$10$^{-3}$ M$_\odot$ yr$^{-1}$, respectively. These values indicate that infall candidates at later evolutionary stages are still accumulating material efficiently. It is interesting to find that both infall candidates and clumps where infall is not detected show a clear trend of increasing mass from the pre-stellar to proto-stellar, and to the HII stages. The power indices of the clump mass function (ClMF) are 2.04$\pm$0.16 and 2.17$\pm$0.31 for the infall candidates and clumps where infall is not detected, respectively, which agree well with the power index of the stellar initial mass function (2.35) and the cold Planck cores (2.0)., Comment: 26 pages, 26 figures, accepted for publication on MNRAS

PKS 0202$+$149 is a low-power radio source with blazar-like $\gamma$-ray AGN characteristics and its properties and classification are investigated in relation to its $\gamma$-ray characteristics. It shows a hint of low frequency turnover at about 200 MHz. Radio imaging data of 0202$+$149 at different frequencies show differing morphologies on both kilo-parsec (kpc) and parsec (pc) scales. The overall source shows a triple structure of core and double lobes with a total projected size of $\sim$1.3 kpc. The compact source structure of 0202+149 is reminiscent of a compact steep spectrum (CSS) source. At pc scales a core-jet structure extends $\sim$25 pc (in projection) at a position angle perpendicular to the kpc-scale structure. The curved pc-scale structure with jet and inner lobe suggests that the CSS nuclear activity has recently re-started although its power has been decreasing, while the kpc-scale lobes are relics of earlier activity. A maximum apparent superluminal motion of $\sim16\,c$ is detected in the jet components, indicating a highly relativistic jet flow. The brightness temperature of the core is lower than the average value found for highly-beamed $\gamma$-ray AGN, indicating a lower radio power and a relatively lower Doppler boosting factor. Most of the gamma-ray emitting active galactic nuclei (AGN) are blazars, although there is still a small fraction of non-blazar AGN in the Fermi/LAT catalog. Among these misaligned gamma-ray-emitting AGN, a few can be classified as Compact Symmetric Objects (CSOs). In contrast to blazars in which gamma-ray emission is generally thought to originate from highly beamed relativistic jets, the source of gamma-ray emission in unbeamed CSOs remains an open question. The rarity of the gamma-ray emitting CSOs is a mystery as well. Massive star-forming regions with observed infall motions are good sites for studying the birth of massive stars. In this paper, 405 compact sources have been extracted from the APEX Telescope Large Area Survey of the Galaxy (ATLASGAL) compact sources that also have been observed in the Millimetre Astronomy Legacy Team 90 GHz (MALT90) survey during Years 1 and 2. These observations are complemented with Spitzer GLIMPSE/MIPSGAL mid-IR survey data to help classify the elected star-forming clumps into three evolutionary stages: pre-stellar, proto-stellar and UCHII regions. The results suggest that 0.05 g cm$^{-2}$ is a reliable empirical lower bound for the clump surface densities required for massive-star formation to occur. The optically thick HCO$^{+}$(1-0) and HNC(1-0) lines, as well as the optically thin N$_{2}$H$^{+}$(1-0) line were used to search for infall motions toward these sources. By analyzing the asymmetries of the optically thick HCO$^{+}$(1-0) and HNC(1-0) lines and the mapping observations of HCO$^{+}$(1-0), a total of 131 reliable infall candidates have been identified. The HCO$^{+}$(1-0) line shows the highest occurrence of obvious asymmetric features, suggesting that it may be a better infall motion tracer than other lines such as HNC(1-0). The detection rates of infall candidates toward pre-stellar, proto-stellar and UCHII clumps are 0.3452, 0.3861 and 0.2152, respectively. The relatively high detection rate of infall candidates toward UCHII clumps indicates that many UCHII regions are still accreting matter. The peak column densities and masses of the infall candidates, in general, display a increasing trend with progressing evolutionary stages. The galaxy 3C\,316 is the brightest in the radio band among the optically-selected candidates exhibiting double-peaked narrow optical emission lines. Observations with the Very Large Array (VLA), Multi-Element Remotely Linked Interferometer Network (e-MERLIN), and the European VLBI Network (EVN) at 5\,GHz have been used to study the radio structure of the source in order to determine the nature of the nuclear components and to determine the presence of radio cores. The e-MERLIN image of 3C 316 reveals a collimated coherent east-west emission structure with a total extent of about 3 kpc. The EVN image shows seven discrete compact knots on an S-shaped line. However, none of these knots could be unambiguously identified as an AGN core. The observations suggest that the majority of the radio structure belongs to a powerful radio AGN, whose physical size and radio spectrum classify it as a compact steep-spectrum source. Given the complex radio structure with radio blobs and knots, the possibility of a kpc-separation dual AGN cannot be excluded if the secondary is either a naked core or radio quiet., Comment: 12 pages, 3 figures, 2 tables. The European VLBI Network (EVN) has been used at two epochs in 2003 and 2009 to obtain multi-frequency high-resolution images of the merger galaxy NGC6240 in order to study the radio properties of all compact high-brightness components in the galaxy. Our observations at milli-arcsecond resolution detected the northern and southern nuclei and two radio components, which we interpret as long-lived luminous supernovae associated with the circum-nuclear starburst activity at the southern nucleus. The new VLBI data support the presence of an active galactic nucleus (AGN) together with starburst activity at the southern nucleus and provides some evidence for an AGN at the northern nucleus. The two nuclei both display an inverted spectrum at lower GHz frequencies. The spectrum of the southern nucleus indicates thermal free-free absorption on parsec scales, consistent with the presence of an AGN., Comment: 19 pages, 6 figures, accepted for publication in the Astronomical Journal

The sensitivity of radio astronomical stations is often limited by man-made radio frequency interference (RFI) due to a variety of terrestrial activities. An RFI mitigation subsystem (RFIMS) based on real-time digital signalprocessing is proposed here for the Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telescope based on a powerful field programmable gate array processor. In this system the radio astronomy signals polluted by RFI are "cleaned" with the RFIMS before routine back-end correlation processing takes place. The high temporal and frequency resolution of RFIMS allows the detection and excision of RFI better than do standard radio telescope back-end configurations., Comment: 17 pages, 17 figures

Molecules that trace the high-density regions of the interstellar medium may be used to evaluate the changing physical and chemical environment during the ongoing nuclear activity in (Ultra-)Luminous Infrared Galaxies. The changing ratios of the HCN(1-0), HNC(1-0), HCO+(1-0), CN(1-0) and CN(2-1), and CS(3-2) transitions were compared with the HCN(1-0)/CO(1-0) ratio, which is proposed to represent the progression time scale of the starburst. These diagnostic diagrams were interpreted using the results of theoretical modeling using a large physical and chemical network to describe the state of the nuclear ISM in the evolving galaxies. Systematic changes are seen in the line ratios as the sources evolve from early stage for the nuclear starburst (ULIRGs) to later stages. These changes result from changing environmental conditions and particularly from the lowering of the average density of the medium. A temperature rise due to mechanical heating of the medium by feedback explains the lowering of the ratios at later evolutionary stages. Infrared pumping may affect the CN and HNC line ratios during early evolutionary stages. Molecular transitions display a behavior that relates to changes of the environment during an evolving nuclear starburst. Molecular properties may be used to designate the evolutionary stage of the nuclear starburst. Aims: Molecular emission lines originating in the nuclei of luminous infra-red galaxies are used to determine the physical properties of the nuclear ISM in these systems. Methods: A large observational database of molecular emission lines is compared with model predictions that include heating by UV and X-ray radiation, mechanical heating, and the effects of cosmic rays. Results: The observed line ratios and model predictions imply a separation of the observedsystems into three groups: XDRs, UV-dominated high-density (n>=10^5 cm-3) PDRs, and lower-density (n=10^4.5 cm-3) PDRs that are dominated by mechanical feedback. Electromagnetic waves with an azimuthal phase shift are known to have a well defined orbital angular momentum. Different methods that allow for the detection of the angular momentum are proposed. For some, we discuss the required experimental setup and explore the range of applicability.

We study theoretically the exchange of angular momentum between a photon beam and a plasma vortex, and demonstrate the possible excitation of photon angular momentum states in a plasma. This can be relevant to laboratory and space plasma diagnostics; radio astronomy self-calibration; and generating photon angular momentum beams. A static plasma perturbation with helical structure, and a rotating plasma vortex are studied in detail and a comparison between these two cases, and their relevance to the physical nature of photon OAM, is established., Comment: 4 pages, submitted to Phys. Molecules that trace the high-density regions of the interstellar medium have been observed in (ultra-)luminous (far-)infrared galaxies, in order to initiate multiple-molecule multiple-transition studies to evaluate the physical and chemical environment of the nuclear medium and its response to the ongoing nuclear activity. The HCN(1-0), HNC(1-0), HCO+(1-0), CN(1-0) and CN(2-1), CO(2-1), and CS(3-2) transitions were observed in sources covering three decades of infrared luminosity including sources with known OH megamaser activity. The data for the molecules that trace the high-density regions have been augmented with data available in the literature. The integrated emissions of high-density tracer molecules show a strong relation to the far-infrared luminosity. Ratios of integrated line luminosities have been used for a first order diagnosis of the integrated molecular environment of the evolving nuclear starbursts. Diagnostic diagrams display significant differentiation among the sources that relate to initial conditions and the radiative excitation environment. Initial differentiation has been introduced between the FUV radiation field in photon-dominated-regions and the X-ray field in X-ray-dominated-regions. Arp220 is a nearby system in final stages of galaxy merger with powerful ongoing star-formation at and surrounding the two nuclei. Arp 220 was detected in HI absorption and OH Megamaser emission and later recognized as the nearest ultra-luminous infrared galaxy also showing powerful molecular and X-ray emissions. The Square Kilometre Array (SKA) is the radio telescope of the next generation, providing an increase in sensitivity and angular resolution of two orders of magnitude over existing telescopes. Currently, the SKA is expected to span the frequency range 0.1-25 GHz with capabilities including a wide field-of-view and measurement of polarised emission. Such a telescope has enormous potential for testing fundamental physical laws and producing transformational discoveries. The nuclei of ULIRGs harbor massive young stars, an accreting central black hole, or both. Results are presented for molecular gas that is exposed to X-rays (1-100 keV, XDRs) and far-ultraviolet radiation (6-13.6 eV, PDRs). Attention is paid to species like HCO+, HCN, HNC, OH, H2O and CO. Line ratios of HCN/HCO+ and HNC/HCN discriminate between PDRs and XDRs. Very high J (>10) CO lines, observable with HIFI/Herschel, discriminate very well between XDRs and PDRs. In XDRs, it is easy to produce large abundances of warm (T>100 K) H2O and OH. The observed molecular properties of a sample of FIR-luminous and OH megamaser (OH-MM) galaxies have been investigated. The ratio of high and low-density tracer lines is found to be determined by the progression of the star formation in the system. The HCO+/HCN and HCO+/HNC line ratios are good proxies for the density of the gas, and PDR and XDR sources can be distinguished using the HNC/HCN line ratio. An evolutionary model of star formation in ULIRGs was created using existing star formation and radiative transfer codes (STARBURST99, RADMC and RADICAL) as building blocks. The results of the simulations are compared to data from two IRAS catalogs. From the simulations it is found that the dust surrounding the starburst region is made up from two components. There is a low optical depth (tau=0.1, which corresponds to 0.1% of the total dust mass), hot (T~400K) non-grey component close to the starburst (scale size 10pc) and a large scale, colder grey component (100pc, 75K) with a much larger column (tau=10). The simulations also show that starburst galaxies can be powered by massive star formation. The parameters for this star forming region are difficult to determine, since the IR continuum luminosity is only sensitive to the total UV input. Therefore, there is a degeneracy between the total starburst mass and the initial mass function (IMF) slope. A less massive star formation with a shallower IMF will produce the same amount of OB stars and therefore the same amount of irradiating UV flux. Assuming the stars are formed according to a Salpeter IMF (Psi(M) ~ M^-2.35), the star formation region should produce 10^9 Msun of stars (either in one instantaneous burst, or in a continuous process) in order to produce enough IR radiation., Comment: 37 pages, 32 figures, accepted by Astronomy and Astrophysics. We present results from VLBA observations of the 1667 and 1665 MHz OH lines in the two OH megamaser galaxies IRAS12032+1707 and IRAS14070+0525. For IRAS12032+1707 we also present Arecibo HI absorption data. Almost all OH emission previously detected by single dish observations has been recovered in IRAS12032+1707 and is found on a compact scale of <100 pc. The emission shows an ordered velocity field that is consistent with a single disk. However, the data is also consistent with a scenario including two physically different gas components. We explore this possibility, in which the two strongest and most blueshifted maser features are identified as the tangent points of a circumnuclear torus. The redshifted maser features would be extended in a direction perpendicular to the torus, which is in the direction of the merger companion. Thus, redshifted emission could be associated with an inflow triggered by a tidal interaction. HI absorption covers the velocities of the redshifted maser emission, suggesting a common origin. In the second source, IRAS14070+0525, a large fraction of the OH emission is resolved out with the VLBA. We find no significant evidence of an ordered velocity field in this source, but these results are inconclusive due to a very low signal-to-noise ratio., Comment: 10 pages, 7 Postscript figures, accepted by ApJ

The First Look Survey (FLS) is the first scientific product to emerge from the Spitzer Space Telescope. A small region of this field (the verification strip) has been imaged very deeply, permitting the detection of cosmologically distant sources. We present Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telescope (WSRT) observations of this region, encompassing a ~1 sq. deg field, centred on the verification strip (J2000 RA=17:17:00.00, DEC=59:45:00.000). The radio images reach a noise level of ~ 8.5 microJy/beam - the deepest WSRT image made to date. We summarise here the first results from the project, and present the final mosaic image, together with a list of detected sources. The effect of source confusion on the position, size and flux density of the faintest sources in the source catalogue are also addressed. The results of a serendipitous search for HI emission in the field are also presented. Using a subset of the data, we clearly detect HI emission associated with four galaxies in the central region of the FLSv. Broad hydroxyl (OH) absorption-lines in the 1667 MHz and 1665 MHz transition towards the central region of NGC 3079 have been observed at high resolution with the European VLBI Network (EVN). Velocity fields of two OH absorption components were resolved across the unresolved nuclear radio continuum of ~10 parsecs. The velocity field of the OH absorption close to the systemic velocity shows rotation in nearly the same sense as the edge-on galactic-scale molecular disk probed by CO(1-0) emission. The velocity field of the blue-shifted OH absorption displays a gradient in almost the opposite direction. The blue-shifted velocity field represents a non-rotational component, which may trace an outflow from the nucleus, or material driven and shocked by the kiloparsec-scale superbubble. This OH absorption component traces a structure that does not support a counter-rotating disk suggested on the basis of the neutral hydrogen absorption., Comment: 9 pages, 10 figures, submitted to MNRAS (03/12/2003)

We have investigated the physical conditions in the narrow-line region (NLR) of M51 using long-slit spectra obtained with the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (STIS) aboard the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) and 3.6 cm radio continuum observations obtained with the Very Large Array (VLA). Emission-line diagnostics were employed for nine NLR clouds, which extend 2.5" (102 pc) from the nucleus, to examine the electron density, temperature, and ionization state of the NLR gas. The emission-line ratios are consistent with those typically found in Seyfert nuclei and indicate that within the inner near-nuclear region (r ~< 1") the ionization decreases with increasing radius. Upper-limits to the [O III] electron temperature (T ~< 11,000 K) for the inner NLR clouds indicate that photoionization is the dominant ionization mechanism close to the nucleus. The emission-line fluxes for most of the NLR clouds can be reproduced reasonably well by simple photoionization models using a central power-law continuum source and supersolar nitrogen abundances. Shock+precursor models, however, provide a better fit to the observed fluxes of an NLR cloud ~2.5" south of the nucleus that is identified with the extra-nuclear cloud (XNC). The large [O III] electron temperature of this cloud (T = 24,000 K) further suggests the presence of shocks. This cloud is straddled by two radio knots and lies near the location where a weak radio jet, ~2.5" (102pc) in extent, connects the near-nuclear radio emission with a diffuse lobe structure spanning \~4" (163 pc). It is plausible that this cloud represents the location where the radio jet impinges on the disk ISM., Comment: 25 pages, 26 figures (9 color), 7 tables. Using the Effelsberg 100-m telescope, sensitive measurements of the H2O megamaser in NGC 3079 are presented. During 2000 - 2001, `high velocity' features are seen that are red-shifted up to 225 km/s with respect to the systemic velocity of the galaxy (about 1120 km/s). Symmetrically bracketing the systemic velocity, the H2O emission covers a velocity range of 450 km/s with only one potential narrow gap (20 km/s) near the systemic velocity itself. Velocity drifts of individual components are not convincingly detected. It is shown that the presence of red-shifted emission and the absence of detectable velocity drifts are not inconsistent with the existence of a rotating circumnuclear maser disk at the very center of the galaxy. Significant differences in the overall line profile compared to NGC 4258 and a complex morphology of the radio continuum leave, however, space for scepticism., Comment: 4 pages, including 3 figures. We present deep WSRT 1.4 GHz observations of the Hubble Deep Field region. At the 5 sigma level, the WSRT clearly detects 85 regions of radio emission in a 10' x 10' field centred on the HDF. Eight of these regions fall within the HDF itself, four of these are sources that have not previously been detected at 1.4 GHz, although two of these are VLA detections at 8.5GHz. The two new radio sources detected by the WSRT are identified with relatively bright (I<21m) moderate redshift spiral and irregular type galaxies. In the full field, the WSRT detects 22 regions of emission that were not previously detected by the VLA at 1.4GHz. We present WSRT 1.38 GHz observations of the Hubble Deep Field (and flanking fields). 72 hours of data were combined to produce the WSRT's deepest image yet, achieving an r.m.s. noise level of 8 microJy per beam.
