The title organic–inorganic hybrid salt, C2H7IN+·I−, is isotypic with its bromine analog, C2H7BrN+·Br− [Semenikhin et al. (2024). Acta Cryst. E80, 738–741]. Its asymmetric unit consists of one 2-iodoethylammonium cation and one iodide anion. The NH3+ group of the organic cation forms weak hydrogen bonds with four neighboring iodide anions, leading to the formation of supramolecular layers propagating parallel to the bc plane. Hirshfeld surface analysis reveals that the most important contribution to the crystal packing is from N—H...I interactions (63.8%). The crystal under investigation was twinned by a 180° rotation around [001].

Introduction. The deregulated excessive pro-inflammatory cytokine secretion has a detrimental impact on the evolution of COVID-19, aggregating tissue impairment, organ failure, and increasing the risk for death. Several studies have demonstrated the beneficial effect of Tocilizumab (TCZ) in reducing hyperimmune response in severe forms of COVID-19. Materials and methods. This study is a retrospective cohort consisting of a sample of 66 patients hospitalized with COVID-19. The 1-st group consists of 33 patients treated with TCZ 200 mg IV once, and the 2-nd group – of 33 patients treated with TCZ 400 mg IV once. Results. The average age of the patients included in the study was 58,22±1,38 years. A decision regarding TCZ administration was made on average on the 11,34±0,31 day of the disease when the beginning of Cytokine Storm was suspected in the patients already on dexamethasone treatment. The dose of TCZ had significance on the duration of patients' disabilities, duration of oxygen therapy, and duration of hospitalization, with better results for TCZ 400 mg vs. TCZ 200 mg. However, we cannot prove that the dose of TCZ influences the percentage of patients transferred to the ICU for invasive or non-invasive ventilation. Conclusion. The 200 mg fixed dose of TCZ can be a life-saving option for severely ill patients with COVID-19 in the context of IL-6 inhibitor supply shortages.

Abstract Purpose Although mental disorders are common in the workplace, they often go unnoticed. There is frequently a gap in the recognition and effective management of these disorders, leading to delayed recovery and worsening conditions. This study evaluates the level of Mental Health Literacy (MHL) among employees of the Finance and Planning Departments in the Federal District, Brazil, and proposes preventive measures and de-stigmatization strategies for mental health in the workplace. Methods MHL among active employees was assessed using the Mental Health Literacy Scale (MHLS), developed by O’Connor and Casey (2015) and validated for Brazilian Portuguese by Buta et al. (2024). The data analysis included descriptive and inferential statistics, with nonparametric tests used to compare MHL across different groups. Results The results showed that 27.6% of participants had adequate literacy, 67.9% had problematic levels, and 4.5% had inadequate levels. Women were observed to have higher literacy levels than men. Additionally, significant variations in literacy levels were noted among individuals with different health conditions; those diagnosed with cancer, depression, or other illnesses had higher literacy than those without diagnosed conditions. Conclusion To address MHL challenges, educational actions such as awareness campaigns, training, and consultancy programs are essential.

Abstract Background Colorectal cancer (CRC) screening decision aids can inform patients about CRC screening benefits, costs, and procedures. Patients who receive the decision aid report wanting to share the information with their families and friends. We evaluated a CRC screening decision aid on Hispanic patients’ communication to their alters and whether patient-alter communication leads to alters’ CRC screening intention. Methods We conducted a one-arm pre/post study of Hispanic patients and their alters; patients (n = 42) and their alters (n = 19) were recruited from a clinic site in Yakima County, Washington State. Patients viewed a CRC screening decision aid at the clinic site. Survey data from patients and alters were collected via telephone including patients’ communication with their alters about CRC screening after viewing the decision aid and alters’ intention to be screened for CRC after talking to the patient. Results Most participants reported sharing CRC information with their alters after viewing the decision aid, and most alters confirmed they had received CRC information from participants (68%). The decision aid was associated with participants' own intention to undergo CRC screening and with alters' intention to be screened for CRC using a fecal occult blood test (p = 0.014) and sigmoidoscopy (p = 0.011). Conclusions Patient decision aids have the potential to increase CRC screening behavior beyond the decision aid recipients to their social network. Abstract Background Menthol cigarette use remains a large public health problem and disproportionately affects Black adults in the United States. The Food and Drug Administration has proposed prohibiting menthol flavor in cigarettes to protect public health. However, e-cigarettes are available in menthol flavor and are a popular alternative product adults might switch to if menthol is prohibited in cigarettes. Research is needed to understand how availability of menthol (vs. tobacco) flavored e-cigarettes could impact cigarette use among adults who smoke menthol cigarettes. Methods We will recruit 150 adults who currently smoke menthol cigarettes and will randomize them to 1 of 3 conditions modeling different regulatory scenarios. We will recruit equal numbers of participants identifying as Black vs. non-Black and will stratify randomization by race. To promote standardization and adherence, cigarette and e-cigarette products will be provided for 8 weeks based on the assigned condition: (A) no menthol restriction (menthol cigarette and menthol flavored e-cigarette), (B) menthol prohibited in cigarettes only (non-menthol cigarette and menthol flavored e-cigarette), (C) menthol prohibited in both cigarettes and e-cigarettes (non-menthol cigarette and tobacco flavored e-cigarette). A follow-up visit will occur at week 12 to assess tobacco use status. The study aims are to (1) examine the impact of prohibiting menthol flavor in cigarettes and e-cigarettes on smoking behavior and (2) investigate whether outcomes differ by race to understand the impact of menthol policies on Black (vs. non-Black) individuals given high rates of menthol cigarette use in this population. The primary outcome will evaluate changes in the number of cigarettes smoked per day during the 8-week study period and will examine differences by regulatory scenario. Secondary outcomes will compare percent days smoke-free, changes in nicotine dependence, and motivation, confidence, and intentions to quit smoking by the regulatory scenarios. We will examine whether changes in the outcomes differ by Black vs. non-Black participants to compare the magnitude of the effect of the various menthol policy scenarios by race. Discussion Results will contribute critical information regarding menthol in cigarettes and e-cigarettes to inform regulatory policies that maximize reductions in cigarette smoking and reduce tobacco-related health disparities. Introduction: Radiation-induced breast angiosarcoma (RIBAS) is a rare adverse event associated with postoperative breast irradiation. The data from the literature indicate that RIBAS occurs in less than 0.3% of patients treated with adjuvant radiotherapy for breast cancer. Given the rarity, diverse clinical presentation, poor prognosis, and lack of consensus on the management, this study aimed to present experiences of our specialized cancer center with RIBAS, in terms of the incidence, presentation, management, and outcomes. Methods: We reviewed the medical records of 10,834 breast cancer patients treated at the Institute for Oncology and Radiology of Serbia between January 2013 and June 2024 to detect patients that had breast-conserving surgery, followed by postoperative irradiation, and developed angiosarcoma in the irradiated area at least 3 years after radiotherapy, without distant metastases. The incidence, latency period, management, and treatment outcomes were analyzed. Results: A total of nine female patients with RIBAS were identified and included in this study. The median age at RIBAS diagnosis was 64 years (range: 36–68), with a median latency of 64 months (95% CI > 57) from irradiation to diagnosis. The mean tumor size was 55 mm (SD 32.78). Patients were followed for a median of 30 months (range: 7–40) after initial RIBAS surgery. Local recurrence occurred in seven patients (77.8%), with five undergoing re-do surgery with curative intent. Three patients developed distant metastases during follow-up. The median overall survival (OS) was 31 months (95% CI > 30), with a 3-year survival rate of 15.2% (95% CI 2.5–91.6%). The median local recurrence-free interval was 10 months (95% CI > 3). Median OS after RIBAS local recurrence and after breast cancer treatment was 17 months (95% CI > 15) and 108 months (95% CI > 88), respectively. Conclusions: RIBAS is a rare but increasingly prevalent adverse event associated with BC irradiation, marked by an aggressive disease course and high relapse rates. Awareness, prompt diagnosis, and a radical surgical approach with wide clear margins are critical for improving patients’ outcomes.

Outside the United States, bromelain-based enzymatic debridement (BBED) has become an effective tool for the removal of burn eschar. A primary concern with BBED is that it is a painful procedure requiring appropriate analgesia. The purpose of this study was to describe our experience using NexoBrid® (NXB), with a particular focus on pain management. We performed a retrospective review on all 32 adult burn patients enrolled at our institution as part of a multicenter phase 3 clinical trial (DETECT) or the expanded access treatment protocol (NEXT). All patients underwent BBED with NXB of acute deep partial- and full-thickness thermal burn wounds at a major burn center between November 2016 and February 2023. Thirty-two patients with an average age of 42.1 years (SD = 17.4, range 18–72) and an average TBSA of 6.3% (SD = 5.9, range 1–24.5) underwent a total of 33 BBED procedures. Only one patient required an additional NXB treatment, and all patients achieved >95% eschar removal. For pain control during debridement, seven patients required a local block (LB), nine a regional block (RB), and thirteen conscious sedation (CS). Three patients were intubated (INTB) for their burn injury prior to the procedure. There was no statistical difference in Numerical Pain Rating Scale (NPRS) scores during vs. before treatment or after vs. before treatment for all patients or when subdivided by BMI, race, TBSA, total area treated, and anesthetic type (LB, RB, and CS). With appropriate analgesia, the pain associated with BBED of acute deep partial- and full-thickness thermal burns is well tolerated.

In this work, taking the Pr(III) ion as a suitable case study, the authors test the capacity of a series of Gaussian Type Orbitals (GTOs) basis sets to account for the atomic spectra of lanthanide ions. An extended relevance of this assessment can be found in modeling the luminescence of lanthanide-based materials. It was selected the Pr(III) case because it shows a rather rich collection of experimental data, emerging from the f2 and fd configurations. The energy barycenters of spectral multiplets can be equated analytically in terms of the so-called Slater-Condon parameters. By multi-configurational ab initio procedures, with basis sets from existing GTO repositories, the calculated f→f transitions are moderately higher than the experimental values, while the relative energies of fd states undergo both under- and over-estimation. The GTO shortcomings, that are impacting the accuracy, were debated, the critical perspective spreading the seeds of future development.

Cel artykułu/hipoteza: Celem artykułu jest przedstawienie i analiza postrzegania inflacji i wiedzy na jej temat, a także metod ochrony studentów przed jej negatywnymi skutkami. Metodyka: Praca zawiera przegląd literatury w temacie współczesnej inflacji oraz analizę badania naukowego o tytule „Postrzeganie inflacji oraz metody ochrony studentów przed jej negatywnymi skutkami”. Badanie zostało przeprowadzone metodą CAWI na próbie 329 respondentów. Próba była losowa. Wyniki/Rezultaty badania: Analiza przeprowadzonego badania wykazała, że studenci, mimo iż orientują się w obecnej sytuacji inflacyjnej, to słabo rozumieją samo zjawisko. Aby zabezpieczyć się przed negatywnymi skutkami inflacji, stosują różne powszechnie znane metody, takie jak zwracanie uwagi na wydatki, oszczędzanie energii, a także wszelkiego rodzaju inwestycje. Jednakże nie wszyscy starają się uchronić swoje oszczędności przed negatywnymi skutkami inflacji. Działania części ankietowanych uzależnione są od wyższych wartości wskaźnika CPI. Organy publiczne odpowiedzialne za przeciwdziałanie wzrostu cen oraz łagodzenie negatywnych skutków tego zjawiska nie cieszą się zaufaniem studentów. Lecz mimo świadomości na temat destrukcyjnego wpływu wysokiej inflacji na swoje oszczędności oraz na cały obrót gospodarczy, część studentów jest świadoma pozytywnych skutków, jakie niesie ze sobą kontrolowana inflacja.

Veterans were classified as LGBT using natural language processing. We used a robust Poisson model to examine the association between LGBT status and binary outcomes of pain screening, any pain, and persistent pain within one year of entry in the cohort. All models were adjusted for demographics, mental health, substance use, musculoskeletal disorder(s), and number of clinic visits.Results: There were 1,149,486 Veterans (218,154 (19%) classified as LGBT) in our study. Among LGBT Veterans, 94% were screened for pain compared to 89% among those not classified as LGBT (non-LGBT) Veterans. In adjusted models, LGBT Veterans’ probability of being screened for pain compared to non-LGBT Veterans was 2.5% higher (95% CI 2.3%, 2.6%); risk of any pain was 2.1% lower (95% CI 1.6%, 2.6%); and there was no significant difference between LGBT and non-LGBT Veterans in persistent pain (RR = 1.00, 95% CI (0.99, 1.01), p = 0.88).Conclusions: In a nationwide sample, LGBT Veterans were more likely to be screened for pain but had lower self-reported pain scores, though adjusted differences were small. It was notable that transgender and Black Veterans reported the greatest pain. Reasons for these findings require further investigation.Keywords: LGBT, pain, screening, persistent pain, Veterans

Polymeric composites with boron nitride nanosheets (BNNs), which are thermally conductive yet electrically insulating, have been pursued for a variety of technological applications, especially those for thermal management in electronic devices and systems. Highlighted in this review are recent advances in the effort to improve in-plane thermal transport performance in polymer/BNNs composites and also the growing research activities aimed at composites of enhanced cross-plane or isotropic thermal conductivity, for which various filler alignment strategies during composite fabrication have been explored. Also highlighted and discussed are some significant challenges and major opportunities for further advances in the development of thermally conductive composite materials and their mechanistic understandings.

This study aims to assess and identify the role of disruptive/digital technologies in financial innovation strategies as part of social innovations at both the firm and country level. The analysis proposed by the present study brings useful theoretical/pragmatic insights on the application of financial technologies in the context of the “fintech” revolution, as a disruptive innovation. There are few studies of this type that “cross-examine” technical/social innovative capacity at the firm level vs. the same innovative capacity at the level of the world’s major countries. Our proposed study brings some novel elements to the literature on this topic. First, the study synthesizes the factors/variables explaining technical/social innovative capacity as ranked by the GCI (Global Competitiveness Index) and GII (Global Innovation Index) at the country level and then correlates informal/empirical variables with the factors explaining innovative capacity for the 50 companies in the BCG (Boston Consulting Group) ranking. Second, the study identifies three “driving forces” (digital technologies, managers, and the market) as the main variables determining financial innovativeness (fintech revolution) at the firm level. Third, based on the “over-cross assessment” (non- statistical) of the information/data provided by the BCG study vs. the GII and GCI studies, the study suggests some ways to delineate and quantify financial innovation as part of social innovation (e.g., it is argued that up to 80% of the social innovation achieved annually by a firm relates to the financial relationships engaged by the firm with various categories of stakeholders). Finally, the study is also important from a pragmatic point of view as it suggests/proposes a number of principles that can be considered by managers for building a KM (knowledge management) and continuous financial innovation strategy. From a theoretical perspective, the study provides a starting point for further research aimed at explaining firm-level financial innovation (fintech as a disruptor) through the massive use of disruptive technologies.

Abstract Background Frailty assessment promises to identify older adults at risk for adverse consequences following stressors and target interventions to improve health outcomes. The Physical Frailty Phenotype (PFP) is a widely-studied, well validated assessment but incorporates performance-based slow walk and grip strength criteria that challenge its use in some clinical settings. Variants replacing performance-based elements with self-reported proxies have been proposed. Our study evaluated whether commonly available disability self-reports could be substituted for the performance-based criteria in the PFP while still identifying as “frail” the same subpopulations of individuals. Methods Parallel analyses were conducted in 3393 female and 2495 male Cardiovascular Health Study, Round 2 participants assessed in 1989–90. Candidate self-reported proxies for the phenotype’s “slowness” and “weakness” criteria were evaluated for comparable prevalence and agreement by mode of measurement. For best-performing candidates: Frailty status (3 + positive criteria out of 5) was compared for prevalence and agreement between the PFP and mostly self-reported versions. Personal characteristics were compared between those adjudicated as frail by (a) only a self-reported version; (b) only the PFP; (c) both, using bivariable analyses and multinomial logistic regression. Results Self-reported difficulty walking ½ mile was selected as a proxy for the phenotype’s slowness criterion. Two self-reported weakness proxies were examined: difficulty transferring from a bed or chair or gripping with hands, and difficulty as just defined or in lifting a 10-pound bag. Prevalences matched to within 4% between self-reported and performance-based criteria in the whole sample, but in all cases the self-reported prevalence for women exceeded that for men by 11% or more. One of the most promising solutions to the current energy crisis is an efficient catalytic transformation of abundant low-cost renewable raw biomass into high-quality biofuel. Herein, a highly effective catalyst was constructed systematically for the selective synthesis of 2,5-dimethylfuran (DMF) biofuel from biomass-derived 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) via green catalytic transfer hydrogenolysis (CTH) using a nitrogen-doped ordered mesoporous carbon (N-CMK-1) decorated ruthenium (Ru)-based catalyst in i-propanol as hydrogen source. The structures and properties of different catalysts were characterized by different characterization techniques such as FTIR, XRD, N2-sorption, CO2-sorption, TGA, TEM, ICP-AES, CHNO analysis, and acid-base back titration. A complete HMF conversion with a high DMF yield of 88% was achieved under optimized reaction conditions. Regarding substrate conversion and product yield, the influence of reaction temperature, time, and hydrogen donors was thoroughly investigated. The nitrogen-promoted carbon support enhanced the dispersion of Ru due to the formation of appropriate basic site density which could efficiently promote the activation of alcohol hydroxyl in i-propanol and subsequent release of active hydrogen species. In the meantime, highly dispersed surface Ru nanoparticles (NPs) were beneficial for hydrogen transfer and activation of both carbonyl and hydroxyl groups in HMF. Moreover, Arrhenius kinetic analysis was studied by identifying 5-methyl furfural (5-MF) and 2,5-bishydroxymethylfuran (BHMF) as two key intermediates that dominate a distinct reaction pathway during hydrogenolysis of HMF to DMF via CTH. Furthermore, high stability without obvious loss of activity after three consecutive cycles was observed in a fabricated N-CMK-1 decorated Ru-based catalyst as a result of superior metal-support interaction and the mesoporous framework nature of the catalyst. These findings would not only offer a robust catalyst synthetic approach but also open a new avenue for the exploitation of biomass to specialty chemicals and advanced biofuels.

Background: Bedaquiline (BDQ) is an effective drug currently used for multidrug-resistant or rifampicin-resistant TB (MDR/RR-TB) and pre-extensively drug-resistant TB (pre-XDR-TB) treatment. However, resistance to this new drug is emerging. We discussed the characteristics of the first patient in Ethiopia who acquired BDQ and fluoroquinolones (FQs) resistance during treatment follow-up. Case report: In this case report, we present the case of a 28-year-old male pulmonary TB patient diagnosed with MDR-TB who is a resident of the Oromia Region of North Shewa, Mulona Sululta Woreda, Ethiopia. Sputum specimen was collected initially and for treatment monitoring using culture and for phenotypic drug susceptibility testing (DST) to first-line and second-line TB drugs. Initially, the patient was infected with a mycobacterial strain resistant to the first-line anti-TB drugs Rifampicin (RIF), Isoniazid (INH), and Pyrazinamide (PZA). Later, during treatment, he acquired additional drug resistance to ethambutol (EMB), ofloxacin (OFX), levofloxacin (LFX), moxifloxacin (MFX), and BDQ. The patient was tested with MTBDRplus and MTBDRsl to confirm the presence of resistance-conferring mutation and mutation was detected in rpoB, katG, and gyrA genes. Finally, the patient was registered as having extensively drug-resistant tuberculosis (XDR-TB) and immediately started an individualized treatment regimen. Conclusion: This case report data has revealed the evolution of BDQ resistance during treatment with a BDQ-containing regimen in Ethiopia. Therefore, there is a need for DST to new second-line drugs to monitor and prevent the spread of DR-TB.

The paper presents preliminary results of the behaviour of two Aronia cultivars grown conventionally and organically. Aronia melanocarpa Michx. Elliott is a versatile, deciduous ultistems shrub, which belongs to Rosaceae family. It is considered a rustic shrub due to its high capacity to adapt to different geographic areas, climatic conditions (temperature, rainfall, humidity) and various soil types. It originates from North America and Canada, chokeberry fruits have the highest antioxidant, polyphenols, anthocyans and vitamins content among many shrub species. ‘Nero’ and ‘Melrom’ chokeberry cultivars, found favourable environmental conditions for growth and fruit production in Northern Transylvania, with an average bush volume between 0.46m³- 0.84m³ and yield between 1.018t/ha- 1.674t/ha, in the first 3 years after planting.

Abstract The objectives of the article are: to assess spatio-temporal evolution of eutrophication and water quality of the Turawa dam reservoir, located in south-western Poland on the Mała Panew River; to identify location and relationship between potential sources of physicochemical pollution related to the progressing process of eutrophication; and to determine trophic status and water quality indices of the selected research object. The analysis (Mann–Whitney U test, PCA, HCA, Spearman correlation matrix) showed a high susceptibility of the reservoir to eutrophication processes, especially due to the influence of dangerous loads of compounds emerging from areas with high tourist intensity and pollutants flowing from the Mała Panew River. The parameters deteriorating the ecological status were TP, DO, BOD5, and COD. Considering the cumulative results of water quality indices for the period 1998–2020, the average water quality was in classes II or III. A noticeable deterioration appeared in water quality for the years 2016–2020, which proves the progressing eutrophication in the Turawa reservoir. In 1998–2020, the reservoir was classified as eutrophic or mesoeutrophic based on the calculated three trophic status indices. This article would help in developing a strategy for dealing with water blooms, a reliable system for monitoring pressures causing eutrophication, and optimal technologies for the reconstruction of multifunctional reservoirs.
