1. Longitudinal studies of leadership development: a scoping review.

Abstract

Although various reviews about leadership development (LD) have been published in recent years, no one has attempted to systematically review longitudinal LD studies, which is arguably the most appropriate way to study LD (Day, Leadership Quarterly, 22(3), 561–571, 2011). In this way, the focus of the present scoping review is to understand how true longitudinal LD studies have been investigated and what inconsistencies exist, primarily from a methodological perspective. Only business contexts and leadership-associated outcomes are considered. To achieve this, ample searches were performed in five online databases from 1900 to 2021 that returned 1023 articles after the removal of duplicates. Additionally, subject experts were consulted, reference lists of key studies were cross-checked, and handsearch of leading leadership journals was performed. A subsequent and rigorous inclusion process narrowed the sample down to 19 articles. The combined sample contains 2,776 participants (67% male) and 88 waves of data (average of 4.2). Evidence is mapped according to participants, setting, procedures, outcomes, analytical approach, and key findings. Despite many strengths, a lack of context diversity and qualitative designs are noticed. A thematic analysis indicates that LD authors are focused on measuring status, behavioral, and cognitive aspects. Implications for knowledge and future research paths are discussed. Abstract

The new world order, at the geopolitical and geo-economic levels, affects the structure and management of institutions and organizations across the globe, such as family businesses (FB). This study aims to explore the need to build a new FB theory based on these new challenges. This study was based on a scoping review method. The findings show it is feasible to build a new theory for FB from the geopolicital area, wich reflects the new world order FB is entering and the effects it will have on its diverse elements. This study calls for revisiting how FB has been approached, taking elements from geopolitical theory, and proposes a future perspective, the 5th wave in its research context, a novel view not found in the FB literature., El nuevo orden mundial, a nivel geopolítico y geoeconómico, afecta la estructura y gestión de instituciones y organizaciones en todo el mundo, como las empresas familiares (EF). Este estudio tiene como objetivo explorar la necesidad de construir una nueva teoría de EF basada en estos desafíos. Este estudio se basó en un método de revisión del alcance. Los hallazgos muestran que es factible construir una nueva teoría para la EF desde el área geopolítica, que refleje el nuevo orden mundial al que está ingresando la EF y el efecto que tendrá en sus diversos elementos. Este estudio exige revisar cómo se ha abordado la EF, tomando elementos de la teoría geopolítica, y propone una perspectiva futura, la quinta ola.

Abstract

According to an estimate, in the year 1820, the difference in per capita income between the richest and the poorest country was no more than 3:1. However, with the industrial revolution, some countries experienced a significant shift in their economic growth and the gap in per capita income between the countries started to widen up. This process resulted in increasing global inequality as some countries progressed rapidly, while others remained behind and could not catch-up with the developed world. Nevertheless, with the increase in productivity given the rapid advances in technology, the developing countries have started to catch-up and most of them are growing faster than their developed counterparts. The process of catching up by the individual countries implies a reduction in the gap in productivity and per capita income with the developed world and collectively if all the countries start to catch-up it is referred to as convergence. The phenomenon of convergence has received much attention in the literature on economic development and the potential causes of convergence have intrigued several debates. The neoclassical growth theory provides the theoretical construct to explain this process of convergence and the role of capital, labour and technology is argued to be fundamental. In this regard, the basic premise of this research is that although technology is an important determinant for economic convergence, it cannot be implemented without the entrepreneurs in the economy. The role of entrepreneurial activity is considered to be significant in economic growth, but it has not been explored in the models of economic convergence. Utilising the GEM data on total entrepreneurial activity this PhD thesis addresses this gap and building on the economic development and entrepreneurial literature it explores the role of entrepreneurial activity in economic convergence under varying business contexts. More importantly, it tries to ascertain what type of entrepreneurial activity assists the catching up countries to progress and reduce their gap in productivity and income with the developed world. As the first step in this research, a systematic review of the literature was conducted resulting in a theoretical framework which uncovered the gaps in the existing knowledge. This informed the respective research questions and provided the design for the empirical research that followed. The first empirical paper showed that the impact of entrepreneurial activity in catching up economies, is only significant in the presence of a feedback loop, i.e. as improved entrepreneurial activity from one year feeds into another, helping the catching up countries to grow faster and reduce the gap in productivity and income with the higher incumbent economies. The second empirical paper showed that in the presence of a feedback loop it is only the opportunity entrepreneurial activity that has a significant impact in reducing the GDP gap, while necessity entrepreneurial activity is insignificant. In a world which is characterised by resource constraints, the biggest public policy issue is effective utilisation of resources. To this end, this research has great insights for public policymakers who are interested in formulating policies for impactful entrepreneurship which can expedite the process of economic development. It shows the importance of entrepreneurial activity in economic catch-up, provides insights into entrepreneurial motivation and at the same time emphasise the value of a feedback loop.

Abstract

The classical approach to the problems of management and control of the functioning and development of business presupposes a relatively stable context, that is sufficiently long-lasting consistency of political, economic, social, technological and other conditions. Accounting and analytical support for management in this case is aimed at processes related to the fnancial, operational and investment activities of the organization. In recent years, the volatility of the business context has been continuously increasing and eliminating changes in the conditions of the organization’s functioning without threatening the economic security of the organization is becoming less and less possible. In the presented research directions of methodological development of accounting and analysis of the business context are determined, as well as the peculiarities of the content of these directions are analyzed. At the same time, it is taken into account that at present the assessment of the business context has become an obligatory requirement of various international management standards. To assess the possibilities of methodical expansion of accounting and analysis of the context, the main provisions of the theory of stakeholders, the theory of sustainable development, business analysis were applied. As a result of the research it was revealed that the processes connected with the formation of business potential aimed at increasing the resilience to changing the context, increasing the strategic security reserve of the organization, meeting the requirements of key stakeholder groups, are subject to systematic accounting, control and analysis. Accounting and analytical work in this direction will allow to create more advanced information and analytical support for the adoption of various managerial decisions, including decisions of innovative business change, timely implementation of preventive measures in connection with future changes in external operating conditions, decisions of effective interaction with internal and external interested parties. The results of the work presented and the prospects for its further development are closely related to the development of research in the feld of accounting and analysis in such areas as business analysis, the formation of standards of non-fnancial reporting, integrated reporting, the development of strategic management accounting, and others.

Abstract

The use of digital games and gamification has showed potential to improve many aspects of how businesses provide education and communicate with consumers. Nevertheless, there is still a requirement for better considerate of how the adoption of games and gamification would influence the process of decisionmaking for customer and organizations across different industry. This article provides a structured review of existing literature on the use of games in the business ecosystem, and seeks to consolidate findings to address research questions regarding their perception, proven efficiency, and identifies key areas for future business. The findings highlight that serious games can have positive and effective impacts in multiple areas of business, including education, decision-support, marketing and consumer outreach. They also emphasize the challenges and pitfalls of affecting serious games and gamification principles within a business context, and discuss the implications of development and evaluation methodologies on the success of a game-based solution.
