11. Investigation of the electroplastic effect using nanoindentation

Abstract

A promising approach to deform metallic-intermetallic composite materials is the application of electric current pulses during the deformation process to achieve a lower yield strength and enhanced elongation to fracture. This is known as the electroplastic effect. We developed a novel setup to study the electroplastic effect during nanoindentation on individual phases and well-defined interfaces. Using a eutectic Al- Al2Cu alloy as a model material, we compare the electroplastic nanoindentation results to macroscopic electroplastic compression tests. The results of the micro- and macroscopic investigations reveal current induced displacement shifts and stress drops, respectively, with the first displacement shift / stress drop being higher than the subsequent ones. A higher current intensity, higher loading rate and larger pulsing interval all cause increased displacement shifts. This observation, in conjunction with the fact that the first displacement shift is highest, strongly indicates that de-pinning of dislocations from obstacles dominates the mechanical response, rather than solely thermal effects.

Abstract

Mild cognitive impairment, dementia and osteoporosis are common diseases of ageing and, with the increasingly ageing global population, are increasing in prevalence. These conditions are closely associated, with shared risk factors, common underlying biological mechanisms and potential direct causal pathways. In this review, the epidemiological and mechanistic links between mild cognitive impairment, dementia and skeletal health are explored. Discussion will focus on how changes in brain and bone signalling can underly associations between these conditions, and will consider the molecular and cellular drivers in the context of inflammation and the gut microbiome. There is a complex interplay between nutritional changes, which may precede or follow the onset of mild cognitive impairment (MCI) or dementia, and bone health. Polypharmacy is common in patients with MCI or dementia, and there are difficult prescribing decisions to be made due to the elevated risk of falls associated with many drugs used for associated problems, which can consequently increase fracture risk. Some medications prescribed for cognitive impairment may directly impact bone health. In addition, patients may have difficulty remembering medication without assistance, meaning that osteoporosis drugs may be prescribed but not taken. Cognitive impairment may be improved or delayed by physical activity and exercise, and there is evidence for the additional benefits of physical activity on falls and fractures. Research gaps and priorities with the aim of reducing the burden of osteoporosis and fractures in people with MCI or dementia will also be discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

20. Diagnosing ADHD from fMRI Scans Using Hidden Markov Models

Abstract

This paper applies a hidden Markov model to the problem of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) diagnosis from resting-state functional Magnetic Resonance Image (fMRI) scans of subjects. The proposed model considers the temporal evolution of fMRI voxel activations in the cortex, cingulate gyrus, and thalamus regions of the brain in order to make a diagnosis. Four feature dimen- sionality reduction methods are applied to the fMRI scan: voxel means, voxel weighted means, principal components analysis, and kernel principal components analysis. Using principal components analysis and kernel principal components analysis for dimensionality reduction, the proposed algorithm yielded an accu- racy of 63.01% and 62.06%, respectively, on the ADHD-200 competition dataset when differentiating between healthy control, ADHD innattentive, and ADHD combined types.

Abstract

A graph is Berge if it has no induced odd cycle on at least 5 vertices and no complement of induced odd cycle on at least 5 vertices. A graph is perfect if the chromatic number equals the maximum clique number for every induced subgraph. Chudnovsky, Robertson, Seymour and Thomas proved that every Berge graph either falls into some classical family of perfect graphs, or has a structural fault that cannot occur in a minimal imperfect graph. A corollary of this is the strong perfect graph theorem conjectured by Berge: every Berge graph is perfect. An even pair of vertices in a graph is a pair of vertices such that every induced path between them has even length. Meyniel proved that a minimal imperfect graph cannot contain an even pair. So even pairs may be considered as a structural fault. Chudnovsky et al. do not use them, and it is known that some classes of Berge graph have no even pairs. The aim of this work is to investigate an "even-pair-like" notion that could be a structural fault present in every Berge graph. An odd pair of cliques is a pair of cliques $\{K_1, K_2\}$ such that every induced path from $K_1$ to $K_2$ with no interior vertex in $K_1 \cup K_2$ has odd length. We conjecture that for every Berge graph $G$ on at least two vertices, either one of $G, \bar{G}$ has an even pair, or one of $G, \bar{G}$ has an odd pair of cliques. We conjecture that a minimal imperfect graph has no odd pair of maximal cliques. We prove these conjectures in some special cases. We show that adding all edges between any 2 vertices of the cliques of an odd pair of cliques is an operation that preserves perfectness.

Abstract

Neutron-scattering and specific-heat measurements of the heavy-fermion superconductor URu2Si2 under hydrostatic pressure and with Rh-doping [U(Ru{0.98}Rh{0.02})2Si2] show the existence of two magnetic phase transitions. At the second-order phase transition Tm ≈ 17.5 K, a tiny ordered moment is established, while at TM < Tm, a first-order phase transition (under pressure or doping) gives rise to a large moment. Abstract

Inelastic neutron scattering has been used to determine the dynamic spin fluctuations in an underdoped high temperature superconductor YBCO_{6.8} single crystal. The magnetic resonance, that occurs around 40 meV in overdoped samples, is shifted to a lower energy, E_r= 34 meV. A constant ratio, $E_r/ k_B T_C= 4.9 \pm 0.2$, almost independent of the doping level, is found. 48. Role of adult hippocampal neurogenesis in the antidepressant actions of lactate

Abstract

In addition to its role as a neuronal energy substrate and signaling molecule involved in synaptic plasticity and memory consolidation, recent evidence shows that lactate produces antidepressant effects in animal models. However, the mechanisms underpinning lactate’s antidepressant actions remain largely unknown. In this study, we report that lactate reverses the effects of corticosterone on depressive-like behavior, as well as on the inhibition of both the survival and proliferation of new neurons in the adult hippocampus. Furthermore, the inhibition of adult hippocampal neurogenesis prevents the antidepressant-like effects of lactate. Pyruvate, the oxidized form of lactate, did not mimic the effects of lactate on adult hippocampal neurogenesis and depression-like behavior. Finally, our data suggest that conversion of lactate to pyruvate with the concomitant production of NADH is necessary for the neurogenic and antidepressant effects of lactate.
