The large number of inscribed rings, brooches and seal matrices unearthed by metal-detectorists in recent decades whose finds are recorded in detail on the Portable Antiquities Scheme (PAS) database have prompted this consideration of these legends — often simple rhyming couplets or 'posies' — especially in the context of that set of romantic conventions retrospectively termed 'Courtly Love'.1 [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article describes a cultural and chronological analysis of artifacts from the late La Tène period, which were discovered in the Prosna and Warta rivers in Poland. Imported items such as brooches, painted ceramics, mirrors, and knot rings were found, while coins and blacksmithing products were locally produced. Gold coins were also found in the Janków II settlement, indicating the presence of a mint. In addition, rich graves of blacksmiths and armed individuals were discovered, indicating a flourishing power center of the Celtic Rix. The findings suggest that the area between the Prosna and Warta rivers was controlled by a Celtic faction within the Przeworsk culture at the end of the La Tène period. [Extracted from the article]

The main goal of this paper is to study a specific element of women's depicted costumes. Pictures on stone monuments present local, so-called native women wearing complex attire of cloth, headwear, brooches, jewels, and other dress accessories. Thirteen stone monuments from Hungary depict local women with headwear-related accessories. The main questions are: what kind of accessories are they, and how can we evaluate their presence on depicted attires? I collected analogous depictions from other Provinces and studied archaeological material. Finally, I concluded that these headwear-related accessories connect to new cultural effects and the complex phenomenon of acculturation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The finds of the La Tène A period from Bohemia known traditionally mainly from the western part of the country are enriched also by the discovery of two new brooches associated with the world of the social elite in the region of Benátky nad Jizerou and Hlušičky near Nový Bydžov in the eastern part of the country and with their regional and interregional context.

The authors analyse a number of 61 Roman brooches from the Brâncoveneşti-Călugăreni sector of the Dacian limes, discovered mainly in the last 15 years. In order to paint a better picture, in our analyses 9 brooches discovered at Brâncovenesti before 2010 were included as well, thus raising the number to 70 pieces. The paper is dealing with 194 Aucissa brooches from 27 sites in the Roman province of Pannonia, based on the results and methodology of international archaeological and historical research. Aucissa fibulae, as costume items, are one of the leading artefacts of the early imperial period, initially used mainly by soldiers (sagum), and are therefore an important archaeological source for the Roman expansion, occupation and Romanisation. In Pannonia 98% of the Aucissa fibulae were recovered from settlements, mainly from the early layers of military forts and later towns. The material of the fibulae is bronze, there is only a single known item being silver-plated. The formal, technological and chronological analysis of the Aucissa fibulae in Pannonia is followed by a costume, historical and archaeological analysis. The Aucissa brooches in Pannonia can be dated from the beginning of the 1st century A.D. to the first decades of the 2nd century A.D. The earliest types (subtypes A242.1,2,3) are found in military forts along the Roman expansion trail. The Aucissa brooches come from the areas of the East–West military expansion route (the Drava-Save interfluve, Siscia, Sirmium, Gomolava), the North–South expansion route to the Danube (Amber Road, Salla, Savaria, Carnuntum) and the Danube limes (Brigetio, Matrica, Rittium). The smaller number of later types of fibulae (subtypes A242.4,5,6) found in the interior of the province of Pannonia (vici) indicates a process of Romanisation of the local population (Bátaszék, Csákberény, Mezőörs). The Aucissa brooches can also refer to cultural and trade relations with the Barbaricum (Púchov culture); they can indicate the movement of the Roman army (Devín, Mušov) and also the mobility of people (Veresegyház, Szeged). The deterioration and degree of preservation of copper alloy archaeological artefacts depends on several interacting factors that began when the artefacts were buried and continue in museum storage. Ageing and deterioration processes that have begun can be slowed, but not completely stopped. The influence of the type of copper alloy and museum environment storage conditions on deterioration processes was investigated. Crossbow brooches with a triangular foot were examined using non-destructive techniques such as portable XRF and radiography, as well as the data from excavation reports. The collected data on museum storage environment was analysed using the software program Eclimatenotebook. Based on the results of this analysis, the future preservation level was calculated using the risk assessment method. Most of the brooches examined were made of brass and were in a fairly good condition. The foot and pin were the most damaged parts. Future storage conditions with a high relative humidity (up to 80%) pose a great risk to the treated and untreated brooches. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The paper presents a relatively recently discovered bronze brooch from Církvice (Kutná Hora district), which is clearly related to the Early La Tène art style. Its discovery is all the more interesting because no other finds from the beginning of the La Tène period were detected either during the rescue excavation that yielded it, or in the site's immediate vicinity. The newly discovered unique piece of personal ornament augments the existing collection of Early La Tène brooches. Moreover, it fits well into the distribution pattern of figural brooches in which the northeast quarter of Bohemia stands out with a series of characteristics of its own. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper addresses the female costume of the East Germanic tradition which was widespread in the North Caucasus throughout the Great Migration period. It was characterised by one or two big two-plate brooches (measuring more than 10 cm in length) worn on the chest or shoulders. Germanic elements, in female costume in particular, spread through the material culture of the North Caucasus in the early stage of the Great Migration period, in the last third of the 4th c. and the first decades of the 5th c. However, the costume featuring big two-plate brooches appeared in the said region, similarly to Europe in general, a bit later, in the second third of the 5th c. Almost all the archaeologically documented cases of the costume in question appearing in the burial context were in the Black Sea coast of the North Caucasus, primarily in the cemetery of Diurso in the vicinity of the present-day Novorossiysk. The 6th c. written sources documented there the area where the Tetraxitae Goths lived. According to Procopius of Caesarea, the Tetraxitae Goths originated from the eastern Crimea. The 6th c. Anonymous Periplus mentioned in the same area the Eudusiani people who spoke Gothic language. In the 5th c., the Tetraxitae Goths migrated from the eastern Crimea to the North Caucasus: the Utigur Huns took them when leaving the northern Black Sea area for the east. Outside of the coastal area, the big two-plate brooches and their diminished copies occurred on the sites of the type Pashkovskii – Karpovka which belonged to the proto-Adyghe population of the Kuban. The costume featuring two-plate brooches was certainly considered prestigious at least by the Tetraxitae Goths who created the cemetery of Diurso. The graves containing the attire in question usually featured rather rich grave goods. All the researchers agree that the costume featuring big two-plate brooches on the chest or shoulders was of East Germanic origin. Its prototype existed in the Cherniakhov archaeologic culture. In the Hunnic period, the costume with small two-plate brooches, which were especially widespread in the Cherniakhov culture and the northern Black Sea areas, became the background for the shaping of the ‘princely’ costume with big brooches of similar form. In its own turn, this new prestigious costume became the prototype of the East Germanic attire with big two-plate brooches as a ‘folk’ replica of prestigious East Germanic costume of the Hunnic period. From the second half of the fifth to the early sixth century, this costume was imitated by the East Germanic ‘middle class’ to become widely distributed in the Barbaricum from the North Caucasus to the Pyrenees. Skeletal graves from the Region north of the Middle Danube are quite rare, because the cremation burials significantly predominated. In Zohor, beside richly equipped princely skeletal graves, also one isolated female skeletal grave of a 50 – 60 years old woman was excavated. It was found in the settlement area from the 1st c. AD, the equipment of the grave was rather poor than rich: two brooches Almgren 68, a small iron knife, a bronze needle und two small ceramic vessels. The so-called bulls-head brooches are one of the most remarkable results of Roman Period barbarian art. Until now they were known mostly from the regions of the Western Balts and the neighbouring Wielbark culture in the North-Eastern part of Central Europe. The interesting question where those brooches were created was discussed broadly throughout many years. New finds – unfortunately all gathered by illegal metal detecting raids and offered for sale – shed a new light on the issue. Found at the Ukraine they show that the appearance of bulls-head brooches has to be seen in a broader, supra-cultural context. All specimen can be dated in a relatively short period of 60 – 70 years in the time before and after 200 AD. The same applies to so-called duck brooches that were known from a few sites only. A silver shield-head bracelet and a silver eastern-type spring-cover fibula were found in Otaslavice through metal detector survey. Both artefacts are closely related to finds attributed to the Wielbark culture. Their dating conforms to phase B2a or the second third of the 2nd c., respectively. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article considers seven bronze fibulae decorated with enamels. They have been discovered in the late 19th century, in the 1970s, and in the early 21th century in the foothill area of the Central Caucasus (Kabarda-Beshtau). Fasteners No. 1 and 2 come from E. Zichi’s collection (the late 19th century, from the area around the Chegem River and the Baksan River); one of them is a hinged arched fibula, and another is an arched fibula with a two-bar hinge. Brooches No. 3—5 have geometric shields and two-bar hinges; these were found by A.P. Runich in the vicinity of Kislovodsk. Brooch No. 6 was found within the excavation unit area at Zayukovo-3 burial ground. This one has a flat rhombic shield supplemented with zoomorphic bulges on four sides, its hinge two-bar in kind; a needle of this brooch has not been preserved. Fibula No. 7 is shaped like a shoe sole. It was revealed in a Sarmatian time occupation layer of the hillfort near Kalezh Mount in the vicinity of the village of Kamennomostskoye. Fibulae No. 2 and 3 are eclectic forms displaying elements characteristic for (a) plate brooches with figurative zoomorphic margins and bird figurines on their shields, (b) fasteners with transverse rectangular enamel inlays, and (c) flat annular shield fasteners with four symmetrically placed bulges shaped like animal heads. Fibula No. 6 represents a rare form of personal ornaments; in the North Pontic area, it is only the second time that an item like this has been reported to be found. Typological analysis of the enamelled brooches under study indicates that they were manufactured in the Roman provinces within the time range from the late half of the 1st century until the 3rd century. Their emergence in Kabarda-Beshtau is associated either with Sarmatian raids in northern Dacia, or with the presence of a Sarmatian group allied to Rome in Roman fortresses, or, finally, with a military clash of the Alans of Don with the Goths in the Northern Black Sea region in the early 3rd century.

In 2021, in the well-known Oksywie and Wielbark Culture cemetery at Czarnówko in Gdańsk Pomerania, a very well-equipped grave was discovered that deserves to be called 'princely'. It is the eleventh grave of this type in the cemetery. Feature 1927 is a cremation grave which was re-opened in antiquity. The urn contained fragments of two Roman vessels: a bucket of copper alloy and a badly melted glass cup or goblet. Despite the cremation, the set of personal objects is rich. It includes a brooch typical of the Wielbark Culture, fragments of two silver bracelets of different types, a golden crescent-shaped pendant, a pendant with a cowrie shell core in a strap-setting, a belt buckle and strap end, and more, all also placed in the urn. The buried person died in the age of senilis; according to the archaeological criteria, it is the burial of a woman. The grave can be dated to subphase C1b. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The cemetery at Zalec, NE Poland, is a cremation burial ground of the Bogaczewo culture and Olsztyn group, first discovered and explored in the early 20th century. At the end of World War II, most of the documentation from the excavations was destroyed. Until recently, even the exact location of the site had been uncertain and was confirmed only in 2016. As a result of surface surveys with metal detectors carried out at that time, more than 90 artefacts, including fragments of triple-crest brooches of the Mazurian type, fibulae with returned foot and plate brooches, as well as belt elements, fragments of cuff bracelets and spurs, were discovered. The chronology of all these artefacts falls between phases B2 and E2, which corresponds to the chronological frames of the functioning of the Zalec cemetery. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article discusses a half-finished fibula of Almgren type 41, discovered by accident in 2019 at a multicultural settlement in the village of Čarnaŭčycy (Чарнаўчыцы/Charnawchytsy) in western Belarus. Together with a similar find from a settlement at the village of Radasc' (??д??ць/Radasts'), located in the same region, it attests to the local manufacture of brooches of this type in the area occupied in phase B2/C1-C1a by the people of the Wielbark Culture. An analysis of brooches of Almgren type 41 from the territory of present-day Belarus makes it possible to specify previous findings concerning the expansion routes of the Wielbark Culture. Based on archaeological finds, this article attempts to analyse brooches belonging to Almgren VII, Series I, variation with headknob and external chord from the territory of Romania. We discuss 85 such brooches (five in silver) which belong to several subvariants dated to chronological intervals in the period between the last decades of the second century and the first decades of the fourth century AD. The authors conclude that these specimens originated in the Przeworsk and Wielbark cultural environments and that they are a marker (alongside other types of artefacts) of the entry and settlement of Germanic populations in the territories surrounding the province of Dacia from with the last quarter of the second century AD. The presented study examines the occurrence of silver objects in Germanic settlements in the territory of southwestern Slovakia. It deals with their connection with the social differentiation of Quadi society and the possibility of interpreta-tion as an indication of the presence of Germanic nobility. Name stamps occasionally appear on early Roman Period bow brooches, such as Aucissa brooches, Nertomarus brooches, brooches with side knobs (Scharnierflugelfibeln), and rosette brooches (Kragenfibeln, Distelfibeln, Flache Distelfibeln). Aucissa brooches are known from the territory of the whole Roman Empire and were produced in multiple workshops, while the other types were typical of the western parts, having been manufactured primarily in the western provinces. According to current research, the 55 bow brooches from Gyor-Men- focsanak-Szeles-foldek belong to different western types. The only stamped brooch is a fragmentary Nertomarus brooch with an abbreviated NERTOMARVS stamp (NORV). This brooch could reach Pannonia from the place of production in different ways. The investigation of elite girls' burials in the Italian peninsula is part of a broader doctoral research project that aims to outline the territorial distribution of Early Mediaeval elite women and girls in the Italian peninsula and analyse the strategies of their funerary self-representation in a short but significant period. Altogether 24 elite girls' burials have been identified in Roman-Byzantine and Lombard territories between the second half of the sixth and the end of the seventh centuries AD. Our analysis focuses on the most significant elements: find context, burial topography, the quality of the funerary goods, and funerary construction. In Byzantine territories, elite children were given ad sanctos burial, but with significant differences in purchasing power between the cities and the countryside. The urban elite was willing to spend huge amounts of money for the burial of their girls inside churches, while the same level of wealth has not been detected in the countryside so far. On the other hand, in the Lombard Kingdom and the Duchies of Spoleto and Benevento, funerals given to elite Lombard girls did not differ from those of older age groups and involved handing over important family brooches between generations. By the mid-seventh century AD, elite girl's burials were frequently near or inside churches and rural oratories, contributing in a significant way to a gradual narrowing of the cultural gap between Lombards and the local population.
