The stellar initial mass function (IMF) is critical to our understanding of star formation and the effects of young stars on their environment. On large scales, it enables us to use tracers such as UV or Halpha emission to estimate the star formation rate of a system and interpret unresolved star clusters across the universe. So far, there is little firm evidence of large-scale variations of the IMF, which is thus generally considered universal. Stars form from cores and it is now possible to estimate core masses and compare the core mass function (CMF) with the IMF, which it presumably produces. The goal of the ALMA-IMF large program is to measure the core mass function at high linear resolution (2700 au) in 15 typical Milky Way protoclusters spanning a mass range of 2500 to 32700 Msun. In this work, we used two different core extraction algorithms to extract about 680 gravitationally bound cores from these 15 protoclusters. We adopt per core temperature using the temperature estimate from the PPMAP Bayesian method. A power-law fit to the CMF of the sub-sample of cores above the 1.64 Msun completeness limit, 330 cores, through the maximum likelihood estimate technique yields a slope of 1.97 +/- 0.06, significantly flatter than the 2.35 Salpeter slope. Assuming a self-similar mapping between the CMF and the IMF, this result implies that these 15 high-mass protoclusters will generate atypical IMFs. This sample is the largest to date produced and analysed self-consistently, derived at matched physical resolution, with per-core temperature estimates and cores as massive as 150 Msun. We have investigated the physical properties of Planck Galactic Cold Clumps (PGCCs) located in the Galactic Plane, using the JCMT Plane Survey (JPS) and the SCUBA-2 Continuum Observations of Pre-protostellar Evolution (SCOPE) survey. By utilising a suite of molecular-line surveys, velocities and distances were assigned to the compact sources within the PGCCs, placing them in a Galactic context. The properties of these compact sources show no large-scale variations with Galactic environment. Investigating the star-forming content of the sample, we find that the luminosity-to-mass ratio (L/M) is an order of magnitude lower than in other Galactic studies, indicating that these objects are hosting lower levels of star formation. Finally, by comparing ATLASGAL sources that are associated or are not associated with PGCCs, we find that those associated with PGCCs are typically colder, denser, and have a lower L/M ratio, hinting that PGCCs are a distinct population of Galactic Plane sources., Comment: 18 pages, 14 figures, 7 tables. The ALMA-IMF Large Program provides multi-tracer observations of 15 Galactic massive protoclusters at matched sensitivity and spatial resolution. We focus on the dense gas kinematics of the G353.41 protocluster traced by N$_2$H$^+$ (1$-$0), with an spatial resolution $\sim$0.02 pc. G353.41, at a distance of $\sim$2 kpc, has a mass of $\sim$2500 M$_{\odot}$ within $1.3\times1.3$ pc$^2$. We extract the N$_2$H$^+$ isolated line component and we decompose it by fitting up to 3 Gaussian velocity components. This allows us to identify velocity structures that are impossible to identify in the traditional position-velocity diagram. We identify multiple velocity gradients on large ($\sim$1 pc) and small scales ($\sim$0.2 pc). We find good agreement between the N$_2$H$^+$ velocities and the previously reported DCN core velocities, suggesting that cores are kinematically coupled to the dense gas in which they form. We measure 9 converging ``V-shaped'' velocity gradients ($\sim20$ km/s/pc), located in filaments, which are sometimes associated with cores near their point of convergence. The average inflow timescale is $\sim67$ kyr, or about twice the free-fall time of cores in the same area ($\sim33$ kyr) but substantially shorter than protostar lifetime estimates ($\sim$0.5 Myr). We derive mass accretion rates in the range of $(0.35-8.77)\,\times\,10^{-4}$ M$_{\odot}$/yr. This feeding might lead to further filament collapse and formation of new cores. We suggest that the protocluster is collapsing on large scales, but the velocity signature of collapse is slow compared to pure free-fall. Sites associated with high-mass star and cluster formation exhibit a so-called hot core phase, characterized by high temperatures and column densities of complex organic molecules. We built a comprehensive census of hot core candidates towards the ALMA-IMF protoclusters based on the detection of two CH3OCHO emission lines at 216.1 GHz. We used the source extraction algorithm GExt2D to identify peaks of methyl formate (CH3OCHO) emission that is a complex species commonly observed towards sites of star formation. We built up a catalog of 76 hot core candidates with masses ranging from about 0.2 to 80 Msun , of which 56 are new detections. A large majority of these objects are compact, rather circular, with deconvolved FWHM sizes of about 2300 au on average. About 30% of our sample of methyl formate sources have core masses above 8 Msun within sizes ranging from about 1000 au to 13400 au, which well correspond to archetypical hot cores. The origin of the CH3OCHO emission toward the lower-mass cores can be explained by a mixture of contribution from shocks, or may correspond to objects in a more evolved state, i.e. beyond the hot core stage. We find that the fraction of hot core candidates increases with the core mass. The large fraction of hot core candidates towards the most massive cores suggests that they rapidly enter the hot core phase and feedback effects from the forming protostar(s) impact their environment on short time-scales.

A total of 64 ATOMS sources at different evolutionary stages were selected to investigate the kinematics and dynamics of gas structures under feedback. We identified dense gas structures based on the integrated intensity map of H$^{13}$CO$^+$ J=1-0 emission, and then extracted the average spectra of all structures to investigate their velocity components and gas kinematics. For the scaling relations between velocity dispersion $\sigma$, effective radius $R$ and column density $N$ of all structures, $\sigma-N*R$ always has a stronger correlation compared to $\sigma-N$ and $\sigma-R$. There are significant correlations between velocity dispersion and column density, which may imply that the velocity dispersion originates from gravitational collapse, also revealed by the velocity gradients. The measured velocity gradients for dense gas structures in early-stage sources and late-stage sources are comparable, indicating gravitational collapse through all evolutionary stages. We quantitatively estimated the velocity dispersion generated by the outflows, inflows, ionized gas pressure and radiation pressure, and found that the ionized gas feedback is stronger than other feedback mechanisms. However, although feedback from HII regions is the strongest, it does not significantly affect the physical properties of the embedded dense gas structures. Combining with the conclusions in Zhou+2023 on cloud-clump scales, we suggest that although feedback from cloud to core scales will break up the original cloud complex, the substructures of the original complex can be reorganized into new gravitationally governed configurations around new gravitational centers. (Abridged) High-mass star formation is far less understood than low-mass star formation. It entails molecular outflows, which disturb the protostellar clump. Studying these outflows and the shocked gas they cause is key for a better understanding of this process. This study aims to characterise the behaviour of molecular outflows in the most massive protostellar sources in the Southern Galaxy by looking for evolutionary trends and associating shocked gas with outflow activity. We present APEX SEPIA180 observations (beamwidth $\sim$36") of SiO outflow candidates of a sample of 32 luminous and dense clumps, candidates to harbouring Hot Molecular Cores. We study the SiO(4-3) line emission, an unambiguous tracer of shocked gas and recent outflow activity, the HCO$^+$(2-1) and H$^{13}$CO$^+$(2-1) lines. 78% of our sample present SiO emission. Nine of these also have wings in the HCO$^+$ line, indicating outflow activity. The SiO emission of these 9 sources is more intense and wider than the rest, suggesting that the outflows in this group are faster and more energetic. Three positive correlations between the outflow properties were found, which suggest that more energetic outflows bear to mobilise more material. No correlation was found between the evolutionary stage indicator $L/M$ and SiO outflow properties, supporting that outflows happen throughout the whole high-mass star formation process. We conclude that sources with both SiO emission and HCO$^+$ wings and sources with only SiO emission are in virtually the same advanced stage of evolution in the high-mass star formation process. The former present more massive and more powerful SiO outflows than the latter. Thus, looking for more outflow signatures such as HCO$^+$ wings could help identify more massive and active massive star-forming regions in samples of similarly evolved sources, as well as sources with older outflow activity., Comment: 24 pages, 37 figures, 11 tables

Context. Filamentary structures in the interstellar medium are closely related to star formation. Dense gas mass fraction (DGMF) or clump formation efficiency in large-scale filaments possibly determine their hosting star formation activities. Aims. We aim to automatically identify large-scale filaments, characterize them, investigate their association with Galactic structures, and study their DGMFs. Methods. We use a modified minimum spanning tree (MST) algorithm to chain parsec-scale 13CO clumps previously extracted from the SEDIGISM (Structure, Excitation, and Dynamics of the Inner Galactic InterStellar Medium) survey. The MST connects nodes in a graph such that the sum of edge lengths is minimum. Modified MST also ensures velocity coherence between nodes, so the identified filaments are coherent in position-position-velocity (PPV) space. Results. We generate a catalog of 88 large-scale ($>10pc$) filaments in the inner Galactic plane (with $-60^\circ < l < 18^\circ and $|b| < 0.5^\circ$). These SEDIGISM filaments are larger and less dense than MST filaments previously identified from the BGPS and ATLASGAL surveys. We find that eight of the filaments run along spiral arms and can be regarded as "bones" of the Milky Way. We also find three bones associated with the Local Spur in PPV space. By compiling 168 large-scale filaments with available DGMF across the Galaxy, an order of magnitude more than previously investigated, we find that DGMFs do not correlate with Galactic location, but bones have higher DGMFs than other filaments., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A. 30 pages, 8 figures, 3 tables

The origin of the stellar initial mass function (IMF) and its relation with the core mass function (CMF) are actively debated issues with important implications in astrophysics. Recent observations in the W43 molecular complex of top-heavy CMFs, with an excess of high-mass cores compared to the canonical mass distribution, raise questions about our understanding of the star formation processes and their evolution in space and time. We aim to compare populations of protostellar and prestellar cores in three regions imaged in the ALMA-IMF Large Program. We created an homogeneous core catalogue in W43, combining a new core extraction in W43-MM1 with the catalogue of W43-MM2&MM3 presented in a previous work. Our detailed search for protostellar outflows enabled us to identify between 23 and 30 protostellar cores out of 127 cores in W43-MM1 and between 42 and 51 protostellar cores out of 205 cores in W43-MM2&MM3. Cores with neither outflows nor hot core emission are classified as prestellar candidates. We found a similar fraction of cores which are protostellar in the two regions, about 35%. This fraction strongly varies in mass, from 15-20% at low mass, between 0.8 and 3$M_{\odot} $ up to about 80% above 16$M_{\odot}$. Protostellar cores are found to be, on average, more massive and smaller in size than prestellar cores. Our analysis also revealed that the high-mass slope of the prestellar CMF in W43, $\alpha=-1.46_{-0.19}^{+0.12}$, is consistent with the Salpeter slope, and thus the top-heavy form measured for the global CMF, $\alpha=-0.96$, is due to the protostellar core population. Our results could be explained by clump-fed models in which cores grow in mass, especially during the protostellar phase, through inflow from their environment. Whether ionization feedback triggers the formation of massive stars is highly debated. Using ALMA 3 mm observations with a spatial resolution of $\sim 0.05$ pc and a mass sensitivity of 1.1 $\rm M_\odot$ beam$^{-1}$ at 20 K, we investigate the star formation and gas flow structures within the ionizing feedback-driven structure, a clump-scale massive ($\gtrsim 1500$ $\rm M_\odot$) bright-rimmed cloud (BRC) associated with IRAS 18290-0924. This BRC is bound only if external compression from ionized gas is considered. A small-scale ($\lesssim1$ pc) age sequence along the direction of ionizing radiation is revealed for the embedded cores and protostars, which suggests triggered star formation via radiation-driven implosion (RDI). Furthermore, filamentary gas structures converge towards the cores located in the BRC's center, indicating that these filaments are fueling mass towards cores. The local core-scale mass infall rate derived from H$^{13}$CO$^+$ $J=1-0$ blue profile is of the same order of magnitude as the filamentary mass inflow rate, approximately 1 $\rm M_\odot$ kyr$^{-1}$. A photodissociation region (PDR) covering the irradiated clump surface is detected in several molecules, such as CCH, HCO$^+$, and CS whereas the spatial distribution stratification of these molecules is indistinct. CCH spectra of the PDR possibly indicate a photoevaporation flow leaving the clump surface with a projected velocity of $\sim2$ km s$^{-1}$. Our new observations show that RDI accompanied by a clump-fed process is operating in this massive BRC. Among the most central open questions regarding the initial mass function (IMF) of stars is the impact of environment on the shape of the core mass function (CMF) and thus potentially on the IMF. The ALMA-IMF Large Program aims to investigate the variations in the core distributions with cloud characteristics, as diagnostic observables of the formation process and evolution of clouds. The present study focuses on the W43-MM2&MM3 mini-starburst, whose CMF has recently been found to be top-heavy with respect to the Salpeter slope. W43-MM2&MM3 harbors a rich cluster that contains a statistically significant number of cores, which was previously characterized in Paper III. We applied a multi-scale decomposition technique to the ALMA 1.3 mm and 3 mm continuum images to define six subregions. For each subregion we characterized the high column density probability distribution function, n-PDF, and the shape of the cloud gas using the 1.3 mm image. Using the core catalog, we investigate correlations between the CMF and cloud and core properties. We classify the subregions into different stages of evolution, from quiescent to burst to post-burst, based on the surface number density of cores, number of outflows, and UCHii presence. The high-mass end of the subregion CMFs varies from being close to the Salpeter slope (quiescent) to top-heavy (burst and post-burst). Moreover, the second tail of the n-PDF varies from steep, to flat like observed for the high mass star-forming clouds. We found that subregions with flat second n-PDF tails display top-heavy CMFs. The CMF may evolve from Salpeter to top-heavy throughout the star formation process from the quiescent to the burst phase. W43-MM1 is a young region, very rich in terms of high-mass star formation. We aim to systematically identify the massive cores which contain a hot core and compare their molecular composition. We used ALMA high-spatial resolution (2500 au) data of W43-MM1 to identify line-rich protostellar cores and make a comparative study of their temperature and molecular composition. The identification of hot cores is based on both the spatial distribution of the complex organic molecules and the contribution of molecular lines relative to the continuum intensity. We rely on the analysis of CH3CN and CH3CCH to estimate the temperatures of the selected cores. Finally, we rescale the spectra of the different hot cores based on their CH3OCHO line intensities to directly compare the detections and line intensities of the other species. W43-MM1 turns out to be a region rich in massive hot cores with at least 1 less massive and 7 massive hot cores. The excitation temperature of CH3CN is of the same order for all of them (120-160 K). There is a factor of up to 30 difference in the intensity of the complex organic molecules (COMs) lines. However the molecular emission of the hot cores appears to be the same within a factor 2-3. This points towards both a similar chemical composition and excitation of most of the COMs over these massive cores, which span about an order of magnitude in core mass. In contrast, CH3CCH emission is found to preferentially trace more the envelope, with a temperature ranging from 50 K to 90 K. Core 1, the most massive hot core of W43-MM1, shows a richer line spectrum than the other cores. In core 2, the emission of O-bearing molecules does not peak at the dust continuum core center; the blue and red shifted emission correspond to the outflow lobes, suggesting a formation via the sublimation of the ice mantles through shocks or UV irradiation on the walls of the cavity., Comment: 19 pages, 17 figures. Investigating the physical and chemical structures of massive star-forming regions is critical for understanding the formation and the early evolution of massive stars. We performed a detailed line survey toward six dense cores named as MM1, MM4, MM6, MM7, MM8, and MM11 in G9.62+0.19 star-forming region resolved in ALMA band 3 observations. Toward these cores, about 172 transitions have been identified and attributed to 16 species including organic Oxygen-, Nitrogen-, Sulfur-bearing molecules and their isotopologues. Four dense cores MM7, MM8, MM4, and MM11 are line rich sources. Modeling of these spectral lines reveals the rotational temperature in a range of 72$-$115~K, 100$-$163~K, 102$-$204~K, and 84$-$123~K for the MM7, MM8, MM4, and MM11, respectively. The molecular column densities are 1.6 $\times$ 10$^{15}$ $-$ 9.2 $\times$ 10$^{17}$~cm$^{-2}$ toward the four cores. The cores MM8 and MM4 show chemical difference between Oxygen- and Nitrogen-bearing species, i.e., MM4 is rich in oxygen-bearing molecules while nitrogen-bearing molecules especially vibrationally excited HC$_{3}$N lines are mainly observed in MM8. The distinct initial temperature at accretion phase may lead to this N/O differentiation. Through analyzing column densities and spatial distributions of O-bearing Complex Organic Molecules (COMs), we found that C$_{2}$H$_{5}$OH and CH$_{3}$OCH$_{3}$ might have a common precursor, CH$_{3}$OH. CH$_{3}$OCHO and CH$_{3}$OCH$_{3}$ are likely chemically linked. In addition, the observed variation in HC$_{3}$N and HC$_{5}$N emission may indicate that their different formation mechanism at hot and cold regions., Comment: 40 pages, 23 figures

The ALMA-IMF Large Program observed the W43-MM2-MM3 ridge, whose 1.3mm and 3mm ALMA 12m array continuum images reach a 2500au spatial resolution. We used both the best-sensitivity and the line-free ALMA-IMF images, reduced the noise with the multi-resolution segmentation technique MnGSeg, and derived the most complete and most robust core catalog possible. Using two different extraction software packages, getsf and GExt2D, we identified 200 compact sources, whose 100 common sources have on average fluxes consistent to within 30%. We filtered sources with non-negligible free-free contamination and corrected fluxes from line contamination, resulting in a W43-MM2-MM3 catalog of 205 getsf cores. With a median deconvolved FWHM size of 3400au, core masses range from 0.1Msun to 70Msun and the getsf catalog is 90% complete down to 0.8Msun. The high-mass end of the core mass function (CMF) of W43-MM2-MM3 is top-heavy compared to the canonical IMF. Fitting the cumulative CMF with a single power law of the form N(>logM)\propto M^a, we measured a=-0.95\pm0.04, compared to the canonical a=-1.35 Salpeter IMF slope. The slope of the CMF is robust with respect to map processing, extraction software package, and reasonable variations in the assumptions taken to estimate core masses. We explore several assumptions on how cores transfer their mass to stars and sub-fragment to predict the IMF resulting from the W43-MM2-MM3 CMF. In stark contrast to the commonly accepted paradigm, our result argues against the universality of the CMF shape. More robust functions of the star-formation efficiency and core sub-fragmentation are required to better predict the resulting IMF, here suggested to remain top-heavy at the end of the star-formation phase. We present the first data release of the ALMA-IMF Large Program, which covers the 12m-array continuum calibration and imaging. The ALMA-IMF Large Program is a survey of fifteen dense molecular cloud regions spanning a range of evolutionary stages that aims to measure the core mass function (CMF). We describe the data acquisition and calibration done by the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) observatory and the subsequent calibration and imaging we performed. The image products are combinations of multiple 12m array configurations created from a selection of the observed bandwidth using multi-term, multi-frequency synthesis imaging and deconvolution. The data products are self-calibrated and exhibit substantial noise improvements over the images produced from the delivered data. We compare different choices of continuum selection, calibration parameters, and image weighting parameters, demonstrating the utility and necessity of our additional processing work. Two variants of continuum selection are used and will be distributed: the "best-sensitivity" data, which include the full bandwidth, including bright emission lines that contaminate the continuum, and "cleanest", which select portions of the spectrum that are unaffected by line emission. We present a preliminary analysis of the spectral indices of the continuum data, showing that the ALMA products are able to clearly distinguish free-free emission from dust emission, and that in some cases we are able to identify optically thick emission sources. The ALMA-IMF Large Program imaged a total noncontiguous area of 53pc2, covering 15 extreme, nearby protoclusters of the Milky Way. They were selected to span relevant early protocluster evolutionary stages. Our 1.3mm and 3mm observations provide continuum images that are homogeneously sensitive to point-like cores with masses of 0.2 and 0.6Msun, respectively, with a matched spatial resolution of 2000au. We also detect lines that probe the protocluster structure, kinematics, chemistry, and feedback over scales from clouds to filaments to cores. We classify ALMA-IMF protoclusters as Young, Intermediate, or Evolved based on the amount of dense gas in the cloud that has potentially been impacted by HII regions. The ALMA-IMF catalog contains 700 cores that span a mass range of 0.15-250Msun at a typical size of 2100au. We show that this core sample has no significant distance bias and can be used to build core mass functions at similar physical scales. Significant gas motions, which we highlight here in the G353.41 region, are traced down to core scales and can be used to look for inflowing gas streamers and to quantify the impact of the possible associated core mass growth on the shape of the CMF with time. Our first analysis does not reveal any significant evolution of the matter concentration from clouds to cores or from the youngest to more evolved protoclusters, indicating that cloud dynamical evolution and stellar feedback have for the moment only had a slight effect on the structure of high-density gas in our sample. Furthermore, the first-look analysis of the line richness toward bright cores indicates that the survey encompasses several tens of hot cores, of which we highlight the most massive in the G351.77 cloud. Context. The formation processes of massive stars are still unclear but a picture is emerging involving accretion disks and molecular outflows in what appears to be a scaled-up version of low-mass star formation. A census of outflow activity towards massive star-forming clumps in various evolutionary stages has the potential to shed light on massive star formation (MSF). Aims. We conducted an outflow survey towards ATLASGAL clumps using SEDIGISM data and aimed to obtain a large sample of clumps exhibiting outflows in different evolutionary stages. Methods. We identify the high-velocity wings of the 13CO lines toward ATLASGAL clumps by (1) extracting the simultaneously observed 13CO and C18O spectra from SEDIGISM, and (2) subtracting Gaussian fits to the scaled C18O from the 13CO, line after considering opacity broadening. Results. We have detected high-velocity gas towards 1192 clumps out of a total sample of 2052, giving an overall detection rate of 58%. Outflow activity has been detected in the earliest quiescent clumps (i.e., 70$\mu$m weak), to the most evolved HII region stages i.e., 8$\mu$m bright with MSF tracers. The detection rate increases as a function of evolution (quiescent=51%, protostellar=47%, YSO=57%, UCHII regions=76%). Conclusion. Our sample is the largest outflow sample identified so far. The high-detection rate from this large sample is consistent with previous results and supports that outflows are a ubiquitous feature of MSF. The lower detection rate in early evolutionary stages may be due to that outflows in the early stages are weak and difficult to detect. We obtain a statistically significant sample of outflow clumps for every evolutionary stage, especially for outflow clumps in the 70$\mu$m dark stage. The morphology of the Milky Way is still a matter of debate. In order to shed light on uncertainties surrounding the structure of the Galaxy, in this paper, we study the imprint of spiral arms on the distribution and properties of its molecular gas. To do so, we take full advantage of the SEDIGISM survey that observed a large area of the inner Galaxy in the $^{13}$CO(2-1) line at an angular resolution of 28". We analyse the influences of the spiral arms by considering the features of the molecular gas emission as a whole across the longitude-velocity map built from the full survey. Additionally, we examine the properties of the molecular clouds in the spiral arms compared to the properties of their counterparts in the inter-arm regions. Through flux and luminosity probability distribution functions, we find that the molecular gas emission associated with the spiral arms does not differ significantly from the emission between the arms. On average, spiral arms show masses per unit length of $\sim10^5-10^6$ M$_{\odot} $kpc$^{-1}$. This is similar to values inferred from data sets in which emission distributions were segmented into molecular clouds. By examining the cloud distribution across the Galactic plane, we infer that the molecular mass in the spiral arms is a factor of 1.5 higher than that of the inter-arm medium, similar to what is found for other spiral galaxies in the local Universe. We observe that only the distributions of cloud mass surface densities and aspect ratio in the spiral arms show significant differences compared to those of the inter-arm medium; other observed differences appear instead to be driven by a distance bias. By comparing our results with simulations and observations of nearby galaxies, we conclude that the measured quantities would classify the Milky Way as a flocculent spiral galaxy, rather than as a grand-design one., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A. 38 pages (17 of Appendices), 26 figures, 7 tables. We report detection of radio recombination line (RRL) H$_{40\alpha}$ toward 75 sources, with data obtained from ACA observations in the ATOMS survey of 146 active Galactic star forming regions. We calculated ionized gas mass and star formation rate with H40U line emission. The mass of ionized gas is significantly smaller than molecular gas mass, indicating that ionized gas is negligible in the star forming clumps of the ATOMS sample. The star formation rate (SFR$_{{\rm H}_{40\alpha}}$) estimated with RRL H$_{40\alpha}$ agrees well with that (SFR$_{\rm L_{bol}}$) calculated with the total bolometric luminosity (L$_{\rm bol}$) when SFR $\gtrsim 5 {\rm M_\odot My}r^{-1}$, suggesting that millimeter RRLs could well sample the upper part of the initial mass function (IMF) and thus be good tracers for SFR. We also study the relationships between L$_{\rm bol}$ and the molecular line luminosities (L0mol) of CS J=2-1 and HC$_3$N J=11-10 for all the 146 ATOMS sources. The Lbol-L0mol correlations of both the CS J=2-1 and HC3N J=11-10 lines appear approximately linear and these transitions have success in predicting L$_{\rm bol}$ similar to that of more commonly used transitions. The L$_{\rm bol}$-to-L$_{\rm mol}$ ratios or SFR-to-mass ratios (star formation efficiency; SFE) do not change with galactocentric distances (R$_{\rm GC}$). Sources with H$_{40\alpha}$ emission (or H$_{\rm II}$ regions) show higher L$_{\rm bol}$-to-L$_{\rm mol}$ than those without H$_{40\alpha}$ emission, which may be an evolutionary effect.

We aim to characterize a diverse selection of dense, potentially star-forming cores, clumps, and clouds within the Milky Way in terms of their dust emission and SF activity. We studied 53 fields that have been observed in the JCMT SCUBA-2 continuum survey SCOPE and have been mapped with Herschel. We estimated dust properties by fitting Herschel observations with modified blackbody functions, studied the relationship between dust temperature and dust opacity spectral index $\beta$, and estimated column densities. We extracted clumps from the SCUBA-2 850 $\mu$m maps with the FellWalker algorithm and examined their masses and sizes. Clumps are associated with young stellar objects found in several catalogs. We estimated the gravitational stability of the clumps with virial analysis. The clumps are categorized as unbound starless, prestellar, or protostellar. We find 529 dense clumps, typically with high column densities from (0.3-4.8)$\times 10^{22}$ cm$^{-2}$, with a mean of (1.5$\pm$0.04)$\times10^{22}$ cm$^{-2}$, low temperatures ($T\sim $10-20 K), and estimated submillimeter $\beta$ =1.7$\pm$0.1. We detect a slight increase in opacity spectral index toward millimeter wavelengths. Masses of the sources range from 0.04 $M_\odot$ to 4259 $M_\odot$. Mass, linear size, and temperature are correlated with distance. Furthermore, the estimated gravitational stability is dependent on distance, and more distant clumps appear more virially bound. Finally, we present a catalog of properties of the clumps.Our sources present a large array of SF regions, from high-latitude, nearby diffuse clouds to large SF complexes near the Galactic center. With the aim of studying the properties of Galactic IR bubbles and their impact in massive star formation, we present a study of the IR bubble S169, associated with the massive star forming region IRAS12326-6245. We used CO(2-1),$^{13}$CO(2-1), C$^{18}$O(2-1), HCN(3-2), and HCO+(3-2) line data obtained with the APEX telescope to study the properties of the molecular gas in the nebula and the IRAS source . To analyze the properties and distribution of the dust, we used IRAC-GLIMPSE, Herschel, and ATLASGAL data. The properties of the ionized gas were studied using images obtained from the SUMSS survey and SuperCOSMOS database. In our search for stellar and protostellar objects in the region, we used IR and optical point source calalogs. The new APEX observations allowed us to identify three molecular components associated with the nebula, namely: at $-$39 km/s (component A), $-$25 km/s (component B), and $-$17 km/s (component C). Six molecular condensations (MC1 to MC6) were identified in component A, with MC3 (the densest and more massive one) being the molecular counterpart of IRAS12326-6245. For this source, we estimated an H$_2$ column density up to 8$\times$10$^{23}$ cm$^{-2}$. To explain the morphology and velocity of components A, B, and C, we propose a simple model consisting of a partially complete semisphere-like structure expanding at ~ 12 km/s. The introduction of this model has led to a discussion about the distance to both S169 and IRAS12326-6245, which was estimated to be ~ 2 kpc. Several candidate YSOs were identified, projected mostly onto the molecular condensations MC3, MC4, and MC5, which indicates that the star-formation process is very active at the borders of the nebula. A comparison between observable and modeled parameters was not enough to discern whether the collect-and-collapse mechanism is acting at the edge of S169., Comment: 17 pages, 12 figures. The SEDIGISM (Structure, Excitation and Dynamics of the Inner Galactic Interstellar Medium) survey used the APEX telescope to map 84 deg^2 of the Galactic plane between l = -60 deg and l = +31 deg in several molecular transitions, including 13CO(2-1) and C18O(2-1), thus probing the moderately dense (~10^3 cm^-3) component of the interstellar medium. With an angular resolution of 30'' and a typical 1-sigma sensitivity of 0.8-1.0 K at 0.25 km/s velocity resolution, it gives access to a wide range of structures, from individual star-forming clumps to giant molecular clouds and complexes. The coverage includes a good fraction of the first and fourth Galactic quadrants, allowing us to constrain the large scale distribution of cold molecular gas in the inner Galaxy. In this paper we provide an updated overview of the full survey and the data reduction procedures used. We also assess the quality of these data and describe the data products that are being made publicly available as part of this first data release (DR1). We present integrated maps and position-velocity maps of the molecular gas and use these to investigate the correlation between the molecular gas and the large scale structural features of the Milky Way such as the spiral arms, Galactic bar and Galactic centre. We find that approximately 60 per cent of the molecular gas is associated with the spiral arms and these appear as strong intensity peaks in the derived Galactocentric distribution. We also find strong peaks in intensity at specific longitudes that correspond to the Galactic centre and well known star forming complexes, revealing that the 13CO emission is concentrated in a small number of complexes rather than evenly distributed along spiral arms., Comment: MNRAS, in press

We use the 13CO(2-1) emission from the SEDIGISM high-resolution spectral-line survey of the inner Galaxy, to extract the molecular cloud population with a large dynamic range in spatial scales, using the SCIMES algorithm. This work compiles a cloud catalogue with a total of 10663 molecular clouds, 10300 of which we were able to assign distances and compute physical properties. We study some of the global properties of clouds using a science sample, consisting of 6664 well resolved sources and for which the distance estimates are reliable. In particular, we compare the scaling relations retrieved from SEDIGISM to those of other surveys, and we explore the properties of clouds with and without high-mass star formation. Our results suggest that there is no single global property of a cloud that determines its ability to form massive stars, although we find combined trends of increasing mass, size, surface density and velocity dispersion for the sub-sample of clouds with ongoing high-mass star formation. We then isolate the most extreme clouds in the SEDIGISM sample (i.e. clouds in the tails of the distributions) to look at their overall Galactic distribution, in search for hints of environmental effects. We find that, for most properties, the Galactic distribution of the most extreme clouds is only marginally different to that of the global cloud population. The Galactic distribution of the largest clouds, the turbulent clouds and the high-mass star-forming clouds are those that deviate most significantly from the global cloud population. We also find that the least dynamically active clouds (with low velocity dispersion or low virial parameter) are situated further afield, mostly in the least populated areas. By combining two surveys covering a large fraction of the molecular material in the Galactic disk we investigate the role the spiral arms play in the star formation process. We have matched clumps identified by ATLASGAL with their parental GMCs as identified by SEDIGISM, and use these giant molecular cloud (GMC) masses, the bolometric luminosities, and integrated clump masses obtained in a concurrent paper to estimate the dense gas fractions (DGF$_{\rm gmc}=\sum M_{\rm clump}/M_{\rm gmc}$) and the instantaneous star forming efficiencies (i.e., SFE$_{\rm gmc} = \sum L_{\rm clump}/M_{\rm gmc}$). We find that the molecular material associated with ATLASGAL clumps is concentrated in the spiral arms ($\sim$60% found within $\pm$10 km s$^{-1}$ of an arm). We have searched for variations in the values of these physical parameters with respect to their proximity to the spiral arms, but find no evidence for any enhancement that might be attributable to the spiral arms. The combined results from a number of similar studies based on different surveys indicate that, while spiral-arm location plays a role in cloud formation and HI to H$_2$ conversion, the subsequent star formation processes appear to depend more on local environment effects. This leads us to conclude that the enhanced star formation activity seen towards the spiral arms is the result of source crowding rather than the consequence of a any physical process., Comment: 15 pages, 12 figures. We report the first map of large-scale (10 pc in length) emission of millimeter-wavelength hydrogen recombination lines (mm-RRLs) toward the giant H II region around the W43-Main young massive star cluster (YMC). Our mm-RRL data come from the IRAM 30 m telescope and are analyzed together with radio continuum and cm-RRL data from the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array and HCO$^{+}$ 1-0 line emission data from the IRAM 30 m. The mm-RRLs reveal an expanding wind-blown ionized gas shell with an electron density ~70-1500 cm$^{-3}$ driven by the WR/OB cluster, which produces a total Ly$\alpha$ photon flux of 1.5 x 10$^{50}$ s$^{-1}$. This shell is interacting with the dense neutral molecular gas in the W43-Main dense cloud. Combining the high spectral and angular resolution mm-RRL and cm-RRL cubes, we derive the two-dimensional relative distributions of dynamical and pressure broadening of the ionized gas emission and find that the RRL line shapes are dominated by pressure broadening (4-55 km s$^{-1}$) near the YMC and by dynamical broadening (8-36 km s$^{-1}$) near the shell's edge. Ionized gas clumps hosting ultra-compact H II regions found at the edge of the shell suggest that large-scale ionized gas motion triggers the formation of new star generation near the periphery of the shell., Comment: Published at https://iopscience.iop.org/article/10.3847/2041-8213/aa7d48/pdf

It has been proposed that the magnetic field, pervasive in the ISM, plays an important role in the process of massive star formation. To better understand its impact at the pre and protostellar stages, high-angular resolution observations of polarized dust emission toward a large sample of massive dense cores are needed. To this end, we used the Atacama Large Millimeter Array in Band 6 (1.3 mm) in full polarization mode to map the polarized emission from dust grains at a physical scale of $\sim$2700 au in the massive protocluster W43-MM1. We used these data to measure the orientation of the magnetic field at the core scale. Then, we examined the relative orientations of the core-scale magnetic field, of the protostellar outflows determined from CO molecular line emission, and of the major axis of the dense cores determined from 2D Gaussian fit in the continuum emission. We found that the orientation of the dense cores is not random with respect to the magnetic field. Instead, the dense cores are compatible with being oriented 20-50$^\deg$ with respect to the magnetic field. The outflows could be oriented 50-70$^\deg$ with respect to the magnetic field, or randomly oriented with respect to the magnetic field, similar to current results in low-mass star-forming regions. In conclusion, the observed alignment of the position angle of the cores with respect to the magnetic field lines shows that the magnetic field is well coupled with the dense material; however, the 20-50$^\deg$ preferential orientation contradicts the predictions of the magnetically-controlled core-collapse models. The potential correlation of the outflow directions with respect to the magnetic field suggests that, in some cases, the magnetic field is strong enough to control the angular momentum distribution from the core scale down to the inner part of the circumstellar disks where outflows are triggered., Comment: Accepted by A&A, 8 pages, 4 figures

Carbon-bearing molecules, particularly CO, have been widely used as tracers of molecular gas in the interstellar medium (ISM). In this work, we aim to study the properties of molecules in diffuse, cold environments, where CO tends to be under-abundant and/or sub-thermally excited. We performed one of the most sensitive (down to $\mathrm{\tau_{rms}^{CO} \sim 0.002}$ and $\mathrm{\tau_{rms}^{HCO^+} \sim 0.0008}$) sub-millimeter molecular absorption line observations towards 13 continuum sources with the ALMA. CO absorption was detected in diffuse ISM down to $\mathrm{A_v< 0.32\,mag}$ and \hcop was down to $\mathrm{A_v < 0.2\,mag}$, where atomic gas and dark molecular gas (DMG) starts to dominate. Multiple transitions measured in absorption toward 3C454.3 allow for a direct determination of excitation temperatures $\mathrm{T_{ex}}$ of 4.1\,K and 2.7\,K, for CO and for \hcop, respectively, which are close to the cosmic microwave background (CMB) and provide explanation for their being undercounted in emission surveys. A stronger linear correlation was found between $\mathrm{N_{HCO^+}}$ and $\mathrm{N_{H_2}}$ (Pearson correlation coefficient P $\sim$ 0.93) than that of $\mathrm{N_{CO}}$ and $\mathrm{N_{H_2}}$ (P $\sim$ 0.33), suggesting \hcop\ being a better tracer of H$_2$ than CO in diffuse gas. The derived CO-to-\h2 conversion factor (the CO X-factor) of (14 $\pm$ 3) $\times$ 10$^{20}$ cm$^{-2}$ (K \kms)$^{-1}$ is approximately 6 times larger than the average value found in the Milky Way.

Using APEX-1 and APEX-2 observations, we have detected and studied the rotational lines of the HC$_3$N molecule (cyanoacetylene) in the powerful outflow/hot molecular core G331.512-0.103. We identified thirty-one rotational lines at $J$ levels between 24 and 39; seventeen of them in the ground vibrational state $v$=0 (9 lines corresponding to the main C isotopologue and 8 lines corresponding to the $^{13}$C isotopologues), and fourteen in the lowest vibrationally excited state $v_7$=1. Using LTE-based population diagrams for the beam-diluted $v$=0 transitions, we determined $T_{\rm exc}$=85$\pm$4 K and $N$(HC$_3$N)=(6.9$\pm$0.8)$\times$10$^{14}$ cm$^{-2}$, while for the beam-diluted $v_7$=1 transitions we obtained $T_{\rm exc}$=89$\pm$10 K and $N$(HC$_3$N)=2$\pm$1$\times$10$^{15}$ cm$^{-2}$. Non-LTE calculations using H$_2$ collision rates indicate that the HC$_3$N emission is in good agreement with LTE-based results. From the non-LTE method we estimated $T_{\rm kin}$ $\simeq$90~K, $n$(H$_2$)$\simeq$2$\times$10$^7$~cm$^{-3}$ for a central core of 6 arcsec in size. A vibrational temperature in the range from 130~K to 145~K was also determined, values which are very likely lower limits. Our results suggest that rotational transitions are thermalized, while IR radiative pumping processes are probably more efficient than collisions in exciting the molecule to the vibrationally excited state $v_7$=1. Abundance ratios derived under LTE conditions for the $^{13}$C isotopologues suggest that the main formation pathway of HC$_3$N is ${\rm C}_2{\rm H}_2 + {\rm CN} \rightarrow {\rm HC}_3{\rm N} + {\rm H}$., Comment: 15 pages, 8 figures, 2 tables. We present the first release of the data and compact-source catalogue for the JCMT Large Program SCUBA-2 Continuum Observations of Pre-protostellar Evolution (SCOPE). SCOPE consists of 850-um continuum observations of 1235 Planck Galactic Cold Clumps (PGCCs) made with the Submillimetre Common-User Bolometer Array 2 on the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope. These data are at an angular resolution of 14.4 arcsec, significantly improving upon the 353-GHz resolution of Planck at 5 arcmin, and allowing for a catalogue of 3528 compact sources in 558 PGCCs. We find that the detected PGCCs have significant sub-structure, with 61 per cent of detected PGCCs having 3 or more compact sources, with filamentary structure also prevalent within the sample. A detection rate of 45 per cent is found across the survey, which is 95 per cent complete to Planck column densities of $N_{H_{2}}$ $>$ 5 $\times$ 10$^{21}$ cm$^{-2}$. By positionally associating the SCOPE compact sources with YSOs, the star formation efficiency, as measured by the ratio of luminosity to mass, in nearby clouds is found to be similar to that in the more distant Galactic Plane, with the column density distributions also indistinguishable from each other., Comment: 16 pages, 13 figures, 1 table. Star-forming regions are usually studied in the context of Galactic surveys, but dedicated observations are sometimes needed when the study reaches beyond the survey area. Here, we studied the G345.5+1.5 region, which is located slightly above the Galactic plane, to understand its star formation properties. We combined the LABOCA and $^{12}$CO(4$-$3) transition line observations complemented with the Hi-GAL and $\it{Spitzer}$-GLIMPSE surveys to study the star formation toward this region. We used the Clumpfind algorithm to extract the clumps from the 870$\mu$m and $^{12}$CO(4$-$3) data. Radio emission at 36cm was used to estimate the number of HII regions and to remove the contamination from the free-free emission at 870$\mu$m. We employed color-color diagrams and spectral energy distribution slopes to distinguish between prestellar and protostellar clumps. We studied the boundedness of the clumps through the virial parameter. Finally, we estimated the star formation efficiency and star formation rate of the region and used the Schmidt-Kennicutt diagram to compare its ability to form stars. Of the 13 radio sources that we found using the MGPS-2 catalog, 7 are found to be associated with HII regions corresponding to late-B or early-O stars. We found 45 870$\mu$m clumps, and 107 $^{12}$CO clumps. More than 50\% of the clumps are protostellar and bounded and are able to host star formation. High SFR and SFR density values are associated with the region, with an SFE of a few percent. With submillimeter, CO transition, and short-wavelength infrared observations, our study reveals a population of massive stars, protostellar and bound starless clumps, toward G345.5+1.5. This region is therefore actively forming stars, and its location in the starburst quadrant of the Schmidt-Kennicutt diagram is comparable to other star-forming regions found within the Galactic plane., Comment: 20 pages - 15 figures

Two families of models compete to explain the formation of high-mass stars. The quasi-static models predict the existence of high-mass pre-stellar cores sustained by a high degree of turbulence while competitive accretion models predict that high-mass proto-stellar cores evolve from low/intermediate mass proto-stellar cores in dynamic environments. We present ALMA (1.4 mm continuum emission and $^{12}$CO emission line) and MOPRA (HCO$^{+}$, H$^{13}$CO$^{+}$ and N$_2$H$^+$ molecular line emissions) observations of a sample of 9 starless massive dense cores (MDCs) discovered in a recent Herschel/HOBYS study that have masses and sizes ($\sim$110 M$_\odot$ and $r\sim$0.1 pc, respectively) similar to the initial conditions used in the quasi-static models. The MOPRA molecular line features show that 3 of the starless MDCs are subvirialized with $\alpha_{\rm vir}\sim$0.35, and 4 MDCs show sign of collapse. Our ALMA observations, on the other hand, show very little fragmentation within the MDCs whereas the observations resolve the Jeans length ($\lambda_{\rm Jeans}\sim$0.03 pc) and are sensitive to the Jeans mass (M$_{\rm Jeans}\sim$0.65 M$_\odot$) in the 9 starless MDCs. Only two of the starless MDCs host compact continuum sources, whose fluxes correspond to $<3$ M$_\odot$ fragments. Therefore the mass reservoir of the MDCs has not yet been accreted onto compact objects, and most of the emission is filtered out by the interferometer. These observations do not support the quasi-static models for high-mass star formation since no high-mass pre-stellar core is found in NGC6334. The competitive accretion models, on the other hand, predict a level of fragmentation much higher than what we observe., Comment: Accepted by A&A

Analysing the kinematics of filamentary molecular clouds is a crucial step towards understanding their role in the star formation process. Therefore, we study the kinematics of 283 filament candidates in the inner Galaxy, that were previously identified in the ATLASGAL dust continuum data. The $^{13}$CO(2 - 1) and C$^{18}$O(2 - 1) data of the SEDIGISM survey (Structure, Excitation, and Dynamics of the Inner Galactic Inter Stellar Medium) allows us to analyse the kinematics of these targets and to determine their physical properties at a resolution of 30 arcsec and 0.25 km/s. To do so, we developed an automated algorithm to identify all velocity components along the line-of-sight correlated with the ATLASGAL dust emission, and derive size, mass, and kinematic properties for all velocity components. We find two-third of the filament candidates are coherent structures in position-position-velocity space. The remaining candidates appear to be the result of a superposition of two or three filamentary structures along the line-of-sight. At the resolution of the data, on average the filaments are in agreement with Plummer-like radial density profiles with a power-law exponent of p = 1.5 +- 0.5, indicating that they are typically embedded in a molecular cloud and do not have a well-defined outer radius. Also, we find a correlation between the observed mass per unit length and the velocity dispersion of the filament of $m \sim \sigma_v^2$. We show that this relation can be explained by a virial balance between self-gravity and pressure. Another possible explanation could be radial collapse of the filament, where we can exclude infall motions close to the free-fall velocity., Comment: 45 pages, 20 pages for Table of derived parameters

In observational radio astronomy, sideband-separating receivers are preferred, particularly under high atmospheric noise, which is usually the case in the sub-millimeter range. However, obtaining a good rejection ratio between the two sidebands is difficult since, unavoidably, imbalances in the different analog components appear. We describe a method to correct these imbalances without making any change in the analog part of the sideband-separating receiver, specifically, keeping the intermediate-frequency hybrid in place. This opens the possibility of implementing the method in any existing receiver. We have built hardware to demonstrate the validity of the method and tested it on a fully analog receiver operating between 600 and 720GHz. We have tested the stability of calibration and performance vs time and after full resets of the receiver. We have performed an error analysis to compare the digital compensation in two configurations of analog receivers, with and without intermediate frequency (IF) hybrid. An average compensated sideband rejection ratio of 46dB is obtained. Degradation of the compensated sideband rejection ratio on time and after several resets of the receiver is minimal. A receiver with an IF hybrid is more robust to systematic errors. Moreover, we have shown that the intrinsic random errors in calibration have the same impact for configuration without IF hybrid and for a configuration with IF hybrid with analog rejection ratio better than 10dB. Compensated rejection ratios above 40dB are obtained even in the presence of high analog rejection. The method is robust allowing its use under normal operational conditions at any telescope. We also demonstrate that a full analog receiver is more robust against systematic errors. Finally, the error bars associated to the compensated rejection ratio are almost independent of whether IF hybrid is present or not.

Observations of interstellar dust are often used as a proxy for total gas column density $N_\mathrm{H}$. By comparing $\textit{Planck}$ thermal dust data (Release 1.2) and new dust reddening maps from Pan-STARRS 1 and 2MASS (Green et al. 2018), with accurate (opacity-corrected) HI column densities and newly-published OH data from the Arecibo Millennium survey and 21-SPONGE, we confirm linear correlations between dust optical depth $\tau_{353}$, reddening $E(B{-}V)$ and the total proton column density $N_\mathrm{H}$ in the range (1$-$30)$\times$10$^{20}$cm$^{-2}$, along sightlines with no molecular gas detections in emission. We derive an $N_\mathrm{H}$/$E(B{-}V)$ ratio of (9.4$\pm$1.6)$\times$10$^{21}$cm$^{-2}$mag$^{-1}$ for purely atomic sightlines at $|b|$$>$5$^{\circ}$, which is 60$\%$ higher than the canonical value of Bohlin et al. (1978). We report a $\sim$40$\%$ increase in opacity $\sigma_{353}$=$\tau_{353}$/$N_\mathrm{H}$, when moving from the low column density ($N_\mathrm{H}$$<$5$\times$10$^{20}$cm$^{-2}$) to moderate column density ($N_\mathrm{H}$$>$5$\times$10$^{20}$cm$^{-2}$) regime, and suggest that this rise is due to the evolution of dust grains in the atomic ISM. Failure to account for HI opacity can cause an additional apparent rise in $\sigma_{353}$, of the order of a further $\sim$20$\%$. We estimate molecular hydrogen column densities $N_{\mathrm{H}_{2}}$ from our derived linear relations, and hence derive the OH/H$_2$ abundance ratio of $X_\mathrm{OH}$$\sim$1$\times$10$^{-7}$ for all molecular sightlines. Our results show no evidence of systematic trends in OH abundance with $N_{\mathrm{H}_{2}}$ in the range $N_{\mathrm{H}_{2}}$$\sim$(0.1$-$10)$\times$10$^{21}$cm$^{-2}$. Radio Frequency Interference (RFI) is a growing concern in the radio astronomy community. Single-dish telescopes are particularly susceptible to RFI. Several methods have been developed to cope with RF-polluted environments, based on flagging, excision, and real-time blanking, among others. All these methods produce some degree of data loss or require assumptions to be made on the astronomical signal. We report the development of a real-time, digital adaptive filter implemented on a Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) capable of processing 4096 spectral channels in a 1 GHz of instantaneous bandwidth. The filter is able to cancel a broad range of interference signals and quickly adapt to changes on the RFI source, minimizing the data loss without any assumption on the astronomical or interfering signal properties. The speed of convergence (for a decrease to a 1%) was measured to be 208.1 us for a broadband noise-like RFI signal and 125.5 us for a multiple-carrier RFI signal recorded at the FAST radio telescope., Comment: 7 pages

The formation of the most massive O-type stars is poorly understood. We present a case study of a young massive clump from the ATLASGAL survey, G328.2551-0.5321. It exhibits a bolometric luminosity of 1.3$\times$10$^4$ L$_{\odot}$ corresponding to a current protostellar mass of $\sim$11 and 16 M$_{\odot}$. We analyze high angular-resolution observations with ALMA at $\sim$0.17" corresponding a physical scale of $\sim$400 au in dust continuum and molecular lines. The dust continuum emission reveals a single high-mass protostellar envelope and shows evidence for a marginally resolved continuum source. We detect a rotational line of CH$_3$OH within its $v_{\rm t}$=1 torsionally excited state revealing two bright peaks of emission spatially offset from the dust continuum peak, and exhibiting a distinct velocity component $\pm$4.5 km s$^{-1}$ offset compared to the source $v_{\rm lsr}$. Local thermodynamic equilibrium analysis suggests N(CH$_3$OH)=1.2$-$2$\times$10$^{19}$ cm$^{-2}$, and kinetic temperatures of 160$-$200 K at the position of these peaks. Their velocity shifts correspond well to the expected Keplerian velocity around a central object with 15M$_{\odot}$ consistent with the mass estimate based on the source's bolometric luminosity. We propose a picture where the CH$_3$OH emission peaks trace the accretion shocks around the centrifugal barrier, pinpointing the interaction region between the collapsing envelope and an accretion disk. Because the HC$_3$N $v_{\rm 7}$=1e ($J$=38-37) line shows compact emission, and a velocity pattern consistent with models of Keplerian rotation, we suggest that this could be a new tracer for compact accretion disks around high-mass protostars. Spectral line surveys reveal rich molecular reservoirs in G331.512-0.103, a compact radio source in the center of an energetic molecular outflow. In this first work, we analyse the physical conditions of the source by means of CH$_3$OH and CH$_3$CN. The observations were performed with the APEX telescope. Six different system configurations were defined to cover most of the band within (292-356) GHz; as a consequence we detected a forest of lines towards the central core. A total of 70 lines of $A/E$-CH$_3$OH and $A/E$-CH$_3$CN were analysed, including torsionally excited transitions of CH$_3$OH ($\nu_t$=1). In a search for all the isotopologues, we identified transitions of $^{13}$CH$_3$OH. The physical conditions were derived considering collisional and radiative processes. We found common temperatures for each $A$ and $E$ symmetry of CH$_3$OH and CH$_3$CN; the derived column densities indicate an $A/E$ equilibrated ratio for both tracers. The results reveal that CH$_3$CN and CH$_3$OH trace a hot and cold component with $T_k \sim$ 141 K and $T_k \sim$ 74 K, respectively. In agreement with previous ALMA observations, the models show that the emission region is compact ($\lesssim$ 5.5 arcsec) with gas density $n$(H$_2$)=(0.7-1) $\times$ 10$^7$ cm$^{-3}$. The CH$_3$OH/CH$_3$CN abundance ratio and the evidences for pre-biotic and complex organic molecules suggest a rich and active chemistry towards G331.512-0.103., Comment: 15 pages, 7 figures, 7 tables. Hydroxyl (OH) is expected to be abundant in diffuse interstellar molecular gas as it forms along with $H_2$ under similar conditions and within a similar extinction range. We have analyzed absorption measurements of OH at 1665 MHz and 1667 MHz toward 44 extragalactic continuum sources, together with the J=1-0 transitions of $^{12}$CO, $^{13}$CO , and C$^{18}$O, and the J=2-1 of $^{12}$CO. The excitation temperature of OH were found to follow a modified log-normal distribution, $ f(T{\rm_{ex}}) \propto \frac{1}{ \sqrt{2\pi}\sigma } \rm{exp}\left[-\frac{[ln(\textit{T}_{ex})-ln(3.4\ K)]^2}{2\sigma^2}\right] $, the peak of which is close to the temperature of the Galactic emission background (CMB+synchron). In fact, 90% of the OH has excitation temperature within 2 K of the Galactic background at the same location, providing a plausible explanation for the apparent difficulty to map this abundant molecule in emission. The opacities of OH were found to be small and peak around 0.01. For gas at intermediate extinctions (A$\rm_V$ $\sim$ 0.05-2 mag), the detection rate of OH with detection limit $N(\mathrm{OH})\simeq 10^{12}$ cm$^{-2}$ is approximately independent of $A\rm_V$. We conclude that OH is abundant in the diffuse molecular gas and OH absorption is a good tracer of `dark molecular gas (DMG)'. The measured fraction of DMG depends on assumed detection threshold of the CO data set. The next generation of highly sensitive low frequency radio telescopes, FAST and SKA, will make feasible the systematic inventory of diffuse molecular gas, through decomposing in velocity the molecular (e.g. OH and CH) absorption profiles toward background continuum sources with numbers exceeding what is currently available by orders of magnitude., Comment: 24 pages, 23 figures. Aims: To reveal the morphology, chemical composition, kinematics and to establish the main processes prevalent in the gas at the foot points of the giant molecular loops (GMLs) in the Galactic center region Methods: Using the 22-m Mopra telescope, we mapped the M$-3.8+0.9$ molecular cloud, placed at the foot points of a giant molecular loop, in 3-mm range molecular lines. To derive the molecular hydrogen column density, we also observed the $^{13}$CO $(2-1)$ line at 1 mm using the 12-m APEX telescope. From the 3 mm observations 12 molecular species were detected, namely HCO$^+$, HCN, H$^{13}$CN, HNC, SiO, CS, CH$_3$OH, N$_2$H$^+$, SO, HNCO, OCS, and HC$_3$N. Results: Maps revealing the morphology and kinematics of the M$-3.8+0.9$ molecular cloud in different molecules are presented. We identified six main molecular complexes. We derive fractional abundances in 11 selected positions of the different molecules assuming local thermodynamical equilibrium. Conclusions: Most of the fractional abundances derived for the M$-3.8+0.9$ molecular cloud are very similar over the whole cloud. However, the fractional abundances of some molecules show significant difference with respect to those measured in the central molecular zone (CMZ). The abundances of the shock tracer SiO are very similar between the GMLs and the CMZ. The methanol emission is the most abundant specie in the GMLs. This indicates that the gas is likely affected by moderate $\sim $ 30 km s$^{-1}$ or even high velocity (50 km s$^{-1}$) shocks, consistent with the line profile observed toward one of the studied position. The origin of the shocks is likely related to the flow of the gas throughout the GMLs towards the foot points., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A

Context: The bulk of the Molecular gas in the Central Molecular Zone (CMZ) of the Galactic center region shows warm kinetic temperatures, ranging from $>20$ K in the coldest and densest regions (n$\sim 10^{4-5}$ cm$^{-3}$) up to more than 100 K for densities of about n$\sim 10^3$ cm$^{-3}$. Recently, a more diffuse, hotter ($n \sim 100$ cm$^{-3}$, $T\sim 250$ K) gas component was discovered through absorption observations of H$_3^+$. This component may be widespread in the Galactic center, and low density gas detectable in absorption may be present even outside the CMZ along sightlines crossing the extended bulge of the Galaxy. Aims: We aim to observe and characterize diffuse and low density gas using observations of 3-mm molecular transitions seen in absorption. Methods: Using the Atacama Large (sub)Millimeter Array (ALMA) we observed the absorption against the quasar J1744-312, which is located towards the Galactic bulge region at $(l,b)=(-2{^\circ}.13,-1{^\circ}.0)$, but outside the main molecular complexes. Results: ALMA observations in absorption against the J1744-312 quasar reveal a rich and complex chemistry in low density molecular and presumably diffuse clouds. We detected three velocity components, at $\sim $ 0, $-153$, and $-192$ km s$^{-1}$. The component at $\sim 0$ km s$^{-1}$ could represent gas in the Galactic disk while the velocity components at $-153$, and $-192$ km s$^{-1}$ likely originate from the Galactic bulge. Aiming at studying the physical properties of Galactic IR bubbles and to explore their impact in triggering massive star formation, we perform a multiwavelength analysis of the bubble HII region Sh2-39 (N5) and its environs. To analyze the molecular gas we use CO(3-2) and HCO+(4-3) line data obtained with the ASTE telescope. To study the physical characteristics of the dust, we make use of archival data from ATLASGAL, Herschel, and MSX, while the ionized gas was studied making use of NVSS data. We use public IR point source catalogs to search for candidate YSOs in the region. To investigate the stellar cluster [BDS2003]6 we use IR spectroscopic data obtained with the ARCoIRIS spectrograph, and new available IR Ks band observations from VVVX survey. The new ASTE observations allowed the molecular gas component in the velocity range from 30 km/s to 46 km/s, associated with Sh2-39, to be studied in detail. We have identified four molecular clumps, that were likely formed by the expansion of the ionization front, and determined some of their physical and dynamical properties. Clumps having HCO+ and 870 micron counterparts show evidence of gravitational collapse. We identified several candidate YSOs across the molecular component. Their spatial distribution, as well as the fragmentation time derived for the collected layers of the molecular gas, suggest that massive star formation might have been triggered by the expansion of the nebula via the collect and collapse mechanism. The spectroscopical distance obtained for the stellar cluster [BDS2003]6, placed over one of the collapsing clumps, reveals that this cluster is physically associated with the neabula and gives more support to the triggered massive star formation scenario. A radio continuum data analysis indicates that the nebula is older and expands at lower velocity than typical Galactic IR bubbles., Comment: 14 pages, 8 figures. Accepted for publication in A&A

The early evolution of massive cluster progenitors is poorly understood. We investigate the fragmentation properties from 0.3 pc to 0.06 pc scales of a homogenous sample of infrared-quiet massive clumps within 4.5 kpc selected from the ATLASGAL survey. Using the ALMA 7m array we detect compact dust continuum emission towards all targets, and find that fragmentation, at these scales, is limited. The mass distribution of the fragments uncovers a large fraction of cores above 40 $M_\odot$, corresponding to massive dense cores (MDCs) with masses up to ~400 $M_\odot$. 77 % of the clumps contain at most 3 MDCs per clump, and we also reveal single clumps/MDCs. The most massive cores are formed within the more massive clumps, and a high concentration of mass on small scales reveals a high core formation efficiency. The mass of MDCs highly exceeds the local thermal Jeans-mass, and observational evidence is lacking for a sufficiently high level of turbulence or strong enough magnetic fields to keep the most massive MDCs in equilibrium. If already collapsing, the observed fragmentation properties with a high core formation efficiency are consistent with the collapse setting in at parsec scales., Comment: accepted by A&A Letters

The origin and life-cycle of molecular clouds are still poorly constrained, despite their importance for understanding the evolution of the interstellar medium. We have carried out a systematic, homogeneous, spectroscopic survey of the inner Galactic plane, in order to complement the many continuum Galactic surveys available with crucial distance and gas-kinematic information. Our aim is to combine this data set with recent infrared to sub-millimetre surveys at similar angular resolutions. The SEDIGISM survey covers 78 deg^2 of the inner Galaxy (-60 deg < l < +18 deg, |b| < 0.5 deg) in the J=2-1 rotational transition of 13CO. This isotopologue of CO is less abundant than 12CO by factors up to 100. Therefore, its emission has low to moderate optical depths, and higher critical density, making it an ideal tracer of the cold, dense interstellar medium. The data have been observed with the SHFI single-pixel instrument at APEX. The observational setup covers the 13CO(2-1) and C18O(2-1) lines, plus several transitions from other molecules. The observations have been completed. Data reduction is in progress, and the final data products will be made available in the near future. Here we give a detailed description of the survey and the dedicated data reduction pipeline. Preliminary results based on a science demonstration field covering -20 deg < l < -18.5 deg are presented. Analysis of the 13CO(2-1) data in this field reveals compact clumps, diffuse clouds, and filamentary structures at a range of heliocentric distances. By combining our data with data in the (1-0) transition of CO isotopologues from the ThrUMMS survey, we are able to compute a 3D realization of the excitation temperature and optical depth in the interstellar medium. Ultimately, this survey will provide a detailed, global view of the inner Galactic interstellar medium at an unprecedented angular resolution of ~30"., Comment: 30 pages. Recently, differences in Doppler shifts across the base of four close classical T Tauri star jets have been detected with the HST in optical and near-ultraviolet (NUV) emission lines, and these Doppler shifts were interpreted as rotation signatures under the assumption of steady state flow. To support this interpretation, it is necessary that the underlying disks rotate in the same sense. Agreement between disk rotation and jet rotation determined from optical lines has been verified in two cases and rejected in one case. Meanwhile, the NUV lines, which may trace faster and more collimated inner spines of the jet than optical lines, either agree or show no clear indication. We propose to perform this test on the fourth system, Th 28. We present ALMA high angular resolution Band 7 continuum, 12CO(3-2) and 13CO(2-1) observations of the circumstellar disk around the T Tauri star Th 28. We were able to detect, in CO and continuum, clear signatures of a disk in Keplerian rotation around Th28. The 12CO emission is resolved, allowing us to derive estimates of disk position angle and inclination. The large velocity separation of the peaks in 12CO, combined with the resolved extent of the emission, indicate a central stellar mass in the range 1-2 Msun. The rotation sense of the disk is well detected in both 13CO and 12CO emission lines, and this direction is opposite to that implied by the transverse Doppler shifts measured in the optical lines of the jet. The Th 28 system is the second system where counter-rotation between the disk and the optical jet is detected. These findings imply either that optical transverse velocity gradients detected with HST do not trace jet rotation or that modeling the flow with the steady assumption is not valid. Three bright molecular line sources in G333 have recently been shown to exhibit signatures of infall. We describe a molecular line radiative transfer modelling process which is required to extract the infall signature from Mopra and Nanten2 data. The observed line profiles differ greatly between individual sources but are reproduced well by variations upon a common unified model where the outflow viewing angle is the most significant difference between the sources. The models and data together suggest that the observed properties of the high-mass star-forming regions such as infall, turbulence, and mass are consistent with scaled-up versions of the low-mass case with turbulent velocities that are supersonic and an order of magnitude larger than those found in low-mass star-forming regions. Using detailed radiative transfer modeling, we show that the G333 cores are essentially undergoing a scaled-up version of low mass star formation. This is an extension of earlier work in that the degree of infall and the chemical abundances are constrained by the RT modeling in a way that is not practical with a standard analysis of observational data. We also find high velocity infall and high infall mass rates, possibly suggesting accelerated collapse due to external pressure. Molecular depletion due to freeze-out onto dust grains in central regions of the cores is suggested by low molecular abundances of several species. Strong evidence for a local enhancement of 13C-bearing species towards the outflow cloud cores is discussed, consistent with the presence of shocks caused by the supersonic motions within them., Comment: MNRAS (accepted)

The origin of massive stars is a fundamental open issue in modern astrophysics. Pre-ALMA interferometric studies reveal precursors to early B to late O type stars with collapsing envelopes of 15-20 M$_\odot$ on 1000-3000 AU size-scales. To search for more massive envelopes we selected the most massive nearby young clumps from the ATLASGAL survey to study their protostellar content with ALMA. Our first results using the intermediate scales revealed by the ALMA ACA array providing 3-5" angular resolution, corresponding to $\sim$0.05-0.1 pc size-scales, reveals a sample of compact objects. These massive dense cores are on average two-times more massive than previous studies of similar types of objects. Sensitive ground-based submillimeter surveys, such as ATLASGAL, provide a global view on the distribution of cold dense gas in the Galactic plane. Here we use the 353 GHz maps from the Planck/HFI instrument to complement the ground-based APEX/LABOCA observations with information on larger angular scales. The resulting maps reveal the distribution of cold dust in the inner Galaxy with a larger spatial dynamic range. We find examples of elongated structures extending over angular scales of 0.5 degree. Corresponding to >30 pc structures in projection at a distance of 3 kpc, these dust lanes are very extended and show large aspect ratios. Furthermore, we assess the fraction of dense gas ($f_{\rm DG}$), and estimate 2-5% (above A$_{\rm{v}}>$7 mag) on average in the Galactic plane. PDFs of the column density reveal the typically observed log-normal distribution for low- and exhibit an excess at high column densities. As a reference for extragalactic studies, we show the line-of-sight integrated N-PDF of the inner Galaxy, and derive a contribution of this excess to the total column density of $\sim2.2$%, above $N_{\rm H_2} = 2.92\times10^{22}$ cm$^{-2}$. Taking the total flux density, we provide an independent estimate of the mass of molecular gas in the inner Galaxy of $\sim1\times10^9\,M_{\odot}$, which is consistent with previous estimates using CO emission. From the mass and $f_{\rm DG}$ we estimate a Galactic SFR of $\dot M = 1.3\,M_{\odot}$ yr$^{-1}$. While the distribution of diffuse gas is homogenous in the inner Galaxy, the CMZ stands out with a higher dense gas fraction. The low star formation efficiency of the Milky Way is well explained by the low $f_{\rm DG}$ in the Galactic ISM, while the high $f_{\rm DG}$ towards the CMZ, despite its low star formation activity, suggests that, in that particular region of our Galaxy, high-density gas is not the bottleneck for star formation., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A. 10 pages, 10 figures, abstract is shortened

Deep spectral-line surveys in the mm and sub-mm range can detect thousands of lines per band uncovering the rich chemistry of molecular clouds, star forming regions and circumstellar envelopes, among others objects. The ability to study the faintest features of spectroscopic observation is, nevertheless, limited by a number of factors. The most important are the source complexity (line density), limited spectral resolution and insufficient sideband (image) rejection (SRR). Dual Sideband (2SB) millimeter receivers separate upper and lower sideband rejecting the unwanted image by about 15 dB, but they are difficult to build and, until now, only feasible up to about 500 GHz (equivalent to ALMA Band 8). For example ALMA Bands 9 (602-720 GHz) and 10 (787-950 GHz) are currently DSB receivers. Aims: This article reports the implementation of an ALMA Band 9 2SB prototype receiver that makes use of a new technique called calibrated digital sideband separation. The new method promises to ease the manufacturing of 2SB receivers, dramatically increase sideband rejection and allow 2SB instruments at the high frequencies currently covered only by Double Sideband (DSB) or bolometric detectors. Methods: We made use of a Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) and fast Analog to Digital Converters (ADCs) to measure and calibrate the receiver's front end phase and amplitude imbalances to achieve sideband separation beyond the possibilities of purely analog receivers. The technique could in principle allow the operation of 2SB receivers even when only imbalanced front ends can be built, particularly at very high frequencies. Results: This digital 2SB receiver shows an average sideband rejection of 45.9 dB while small portions of the band drop below 40 dB. The performance is 27 dB (a factor of 500) better than the average performance of the proof-of-concept Band 9 purely-analog 2SB prototype receiver., Comment: 5 pages

We present molecular line imaging observations of three massive molecular outflow sources, G333.6-0.2, G333.1-0.4, and G332.8-0.5, all of which also show evidence for infall, within the G333 giant molecular cloud (GMC). All three are within a beam size (36 arcseconds) of IRAS sources, 1.2-mm dust clumps, various masing species and radio continuum-detected HII regions and hence are associated with high-mass star formation. We present the molecular line data and derive the physical properties of the outflows including the mass, kinematics, and energetics and discuss the inferred characteristics of their driving sources. Outflow masses are of 10 to 40 solar masses in each lobe, with core masses of order 10^3 solar masses. outflow size scales are a few tenth of a parsec, timescales are of several x10^4 years, mass loss rates a few x10^-4 solar masses/year. We present polarization observations of two Galactic plane fields centered on Galactic coordinates (l,b)=(0 deg,0 deg) and (329 deg, 0 deg) at Q- (43 GHz) and W-band (95 GHz), covering between 301 and 539 square degrees depending on frequency and field. These measurements were made with the QUIET instrument between 2008 October and 2010 December, and include a total of 1263 hours of observations. The resulting maps represent the deepest large-area Galactic polarization observations published to date at the relevant frequencies with instrumental rms noise varying between 1.8 and 2.8 uK deg, 2.3-6 times deeper than corresponding WMAP and Planck maps. The angular resolution is 27.3' and 12.8' FWHM at Q- and W-band, respectively. We find excellent agreement between the QUIET and WMAP maps over the entire fields, and no compelling evidence for significant residual instrumental systematic errors in either experiment, whereas the Planck 44 GHz map deviates from these in a manner consistent with reported systematic uncertainties for this channel. We combine QUIET and WMAP data to compute inverse-variance-weighted average maps, effectively retaining small angular scales from QUIET and large angular scales from WMAP. From these combined maps, we derive constraints on several important astrophysical quantities, including a robust detection of polarized synchrotron spectral index steepening of ~0.2 off the plane, as well as the Faraday rotation measure toward the Galactic center (RM=-4000 +/- 200 rad m^-2), all of which are consistent with previously published results. Context: Infrared dark clouds are the coldest and densest portions of giant molecular clouds. The most massive ones represent some of the most likely birthplaces for the next generation of massive stars in the Milky Way. Because a strong mid-IR background is needed to make them appear in absorption, they are usually assumed to be nearby. Aims: We use THz absorption spectroscopy to solve the distance ambiguity associated with kinematic distances for the IR-dark clouds in the TOP100 ATLASGAL sample, a flux-limited selection of massive clumps in different evolutionary phases of star formation. Methods: The para-H2O ground state transition at 1113.343 GHz, observed with Herschel/HIFI, was used to investigate the occurrence of foreground absorption along the line of sight directly towards infrared-dark clouds. Additional consistency checks were performed using MALT90 and HiGAL archival data and targeted Mopra and APEX spectroscopic observations. Results: We report the first discovery of five IRDCs in the TOP100 lying conclusively at the far kinematic distance, showing that the mere presence of low-contrast mid-IR absorption is not sufficient to unequivocally resolve the near/far ambiguity in favour of the former. All IRDCs are massive and actively forming high-mass stars; four of them also show infall signatures. Conclusions: We give a first estimate of the fraction of dark sources at the far distance (~11% in the TOP100) and describe their appearance and properties. The assumption that all dark clouds lie at the near distance may lead, in some cases, to underestimating masses, sizes, and luminosities, possibly causing clouds to be missed that will form very massive stars and clusters., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A Letters; 4 pages, 3 figures, 6 pages of online material
