This note identifies a previously unknown document in the Rye archive of the East Sussex Record Office. The document is a letter of safe passage for a group of twelve Italian men and women written by the English ambassador to France, Valentine Dale, in June 1574. Based on the names and other details Dale provides in the letter, this note argues that the group was a troupe of Italian performers touring to England — most likely the same troupe that entertained Queen Elizabeth at Windsor and Reading in July 1574 and the people of Dover in September or October 1574. Sir James Rennell Rodd was one of the most important British ambassadors between the late Nineteenth and early Twentieth century. He was active in Berlin, Athens, Cairo and Stockholm. After the crisis of Bosnia Herzegovina and until 1919, Rodd led the British embassy in Rome in a crucial period for Italy. Rodd disagreed from the Foreign Office line which attributed little importance to Italy and he thought it was necessary to link Italian interests more closely to the British ones. In his Italian experience, he proved himself as a great diplomat, playing a key role in the consolidation and in the choice of the Italian government to enter the war alongside Great Britain and France. The article focuses on the concerns expressed by the British Ambassador, Dobrivoje Vidic, regarding the Austrian government's activity in relation to the revolutionary events in Hungary. It mentions that Vidic made strong objections to Austria's actions but did not provide further specifics when questioned. Based on a long experience in the field of international relations, and particularly his last task as British Ambassador to the Holy See (2011–2016), the author advocates a need for governments to pay attention to, and better understand the role of, religion in human communities as a way to run effective internal and foreign activities. The formation of foreign affairs officials requires a more humanistic approach, which includes the comprehension of religion as a backbone for cultural identity, social engagement and human development. Of the five diplomats who held the post of British ambassador to Berlin during the interwar period, the two-year embassy of Sir Ronald Lindsay, 1926–1928, has received least attention by historians. This article charts three main aspects of Lindsay's career in Berlin. The first of these is his relationship with the Foreign Office, which is consistently good although Treasury comments on his reports about Germany's continuing financial problems expose some of the friction within the British government about how best to deal with the German reparation problem. The second area explored by the article examines Lindsay's views on the “German question,” and suggests that the post-Locarno period did not witness a significant growth of trust between Britain, France and Germany on questions concerning international security. Finally, the article examines how Lindsay's thinking about German affairs compares to his predecessor and his successors and explores Lindsay's views about the likely trajectories of German foreign policy. Sir Ronald H. Campbell was the first British ambassador during the Second World War to manage a key bilateral relationship with a wartime ally. When the Germans invaded France in May 1940, Campbell's Embassy was transformed from a diplomatic reporting post into a frontline base that had to brief London not only on the political situation in France but also on strategic military matters. However, the British ambassador would constantly struggle to register his authority in the overall management of the Franco-British relationship, and more often than not, was bypassed by Whitehall departments, special advisors and senior ministers. Campbell only found himself in a more pivotal role as communications between the British and French Governments disintegrated and the latter moved to Bordeaux.
