Nocturnal mammals have unique sensory adaptations to facilitate foraging at night. Owl monkeys (Aotus spp.) are pair-living nocturnal platyrrhines adept at capturing insect prey under low-light conditions. Owl monkeys use acoustic and chemical cues in intraspecific communication and use olfaction to detect fruit as they forage. We conducted an experiment to determine which cues (auditory, olfactory, and visual) Aotus nancymaae rely upon when foraging for insects. We scored the behavior of 23 captive owl monkeys during a series of trials in which monkeys were provided sensory boxes with insect cues either present (experimental box) or absent (control box). Each cue was tested alone and in combination with all other cues (multimodal cues). We used generalized linear mixed models to determine which cues elicited the greatest behavioral response. Owl monkeys approached and spent more time near experimental boxes than control boxes. Male owl monkeys were quicker than their female partners to approach the sensory boxes, suggesting that males may be less neophobic than females. The owl monkeys exhibited behaviors associated with olfaction and foraging (e.g., sneezing, trilling) during trials with multimodal cues and when only olfactory cues were present. When only visual or auditory cues were present, owl monkeys exhibited fewer foraging-related behaviors. After approaching a sensory box, however, they often touched boxes containing visual cues. A. nancymaae may rely on olfactory cues at night to detect a food source from several meters away and then rely more on visual cues once they are closer to the food source. Their use of sensory cues during insect foraging differs from nocturnal strepsirrhines, possibly reflecting physiological constraints associated with phylogeny, given that owl monkeys evolved nocturnality secondarily from a more recent diurnal ancestor., (© 2023 Wiley Periodicals LLC.)

Food safety is a crucial thematic to any nation and the frauds in the food chain are an increasingly phenomena nowadays. The general goal of the present work was to identify the perception and behavior of Brazilian fresh milk consumers' in relation to the fraud in the milk production and sell chain. A total of 1015 consumers answered an online questionnaire on the variables that shape decision-making (individual differences, environmental influences and psychological stimuli or processes) and the behavior related to this decision process. The results were discussed based on the theoretical model proposed by Blackwell, Miniard, and Engel (2005) and their 7 stages. The results of this qualitative study showed that the impacts were declared, specially, in the reduction of milk consumption; losses to the image of the sector and the warming of the informal milk market, due to the increase in demand in this trade. The reduction of demand and the depreciation of the agents' image, have a negative impact on the entire chain, since it reduces revenues for all agents and, to a greater degree, for processors and related suppliers/farmers directly with the brands identified in the investigation actions and disclosed in the media. The female consumers were more affected, impacting on a greater reduction of the consumption. Melanised cell walls and extracellular polymeric matrices protect rock-inhabiting microcolonial fungi from hostile environmental conditions. How extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) perform this protective role was investigated by following development of the model microcolonial black fungus Knufia petricola A95 grown as a sub-aerial biofilm. Extracellular substances were extracted with NaOH/formaldehyde and the structures of two excreted polymers studied by methylation as well as NMR analyses. The main polysaccharide (~ 80%) was pullulan, also known as α-1,4-; α-1,6-glucan, with different degrees of polymerisation. Αlpha-(1,4)-linked-Glcp and α-(1,6)-linked-Glcp were present in the molar ratios of 2:1. A branched galactofuromannan with an α-(1,2)-linked Manp main chain and a β-(1,6)-linked Galf side chain formed a minor fraction (~ 20%). To further understand the roles of EPS in the weathering of minerals and rocks, viscosity along with corrosive properties were studied using atomic force microscopy (AFM). The kinetic viscosity of extracellular K. petricola A95 polysaccharides (≈ 0.97 × 10 -6  m 2  s -1 ) ranged from the equivalent of 2% (w/v) to 5% glycerine, and could thus profoundly affect diffusion-dominated processes. The corrosive nature of rock-inhabiting fungal EPS was also demonstrated by its effects on the aluminium coating of the AFM cantilever and the silicon layer below.

A flight surgeon presents with severe diarrhea of sudden onset. The unusual cause could be traced to sorbitol, a common sweetener that is widely available and could easily affect many aviators. The symptoms are exacerbated in the aerospace environment and close investigation of the dietary history may be the only clue to this elusive diagnosis.

The tendency to sneeze upon exposure to bright light is autosomal dominant and affects 18-35% of the population. This uncontrolled sneezing may represent a danger to pilots during flight. Testing was conducted using Ditric narrow band (+/- 10 nm) interference filters. Wavelengths at 430, 532, and 560 nm were tested with a GE 500-W photoflood BCA #1 bulb at constant intensity. Subsequent testing of military and civilian aviation goggles and sunglasses was conducted using a Digikrom 240 monochromator. Repeated testing with interference filters in a clinical setting showed no effect on sneezing in a susceptible subject. The photic sneeze reflex does not appear to be mediated by specific wavelengths of light, but rather by the change in light intensity. This could trigger an unexpected sneezing episode during critical periods of flight. This is an unrecognized and previously unreported danger to fixed-wing and rotary aircraft pilots.

Objective: To study patterns of transmission of epidemic keratoconjunctivitis (EKC) in a chronic care facility and to assess control measures and prevent future outbreaks in this setting., Design: A retrospective cohort study., Setting: A 120-bed, four-unit, skilled nursing facility., Patients: Residents and employees of the above facility., Interventions: Increased frequency of cleaning; use of bleach disinfectant; universal precautions in handling eye secretions from residents with conjunctivitis; cohorting residents by unit; suspension of new admissions; closure of common gathering areas., Measurements: Resident demographics; possible risk factors for infection among residents (including mobility, underlying illness, medications, involvement in social activity, level of confusion) and among employees (including co-morbid illnesses and eye conditions, exposures to persons with conjunctivitis, visits to eye care specialists, use of contact lenses or glasses); testing of conjunctival specimens from symptomatic persons for viral and bacterial agents., Results: Of 95 residents on three chronic care units, 47 (attack rate 49%) had onset of eye symptoms consistent with EKC between September 14 and December 7, 1990. Thirty-eight (81%) of these had onset following the onset of symptoms in a resident with dementia who, despite habitual eye-rubbing and wandering into other residents' rooms, was not isolated or restricted in any way. Attack rates were higher (though not statistically significant) among more mobile residents (60% for ambulatory residents) and among those considered by staff to be confused (56%). Rapid antigen detection and culture confirmed adenovirus type 37 as the etiologic agent., Conclusions: Transmission of infection with adenovirus type 37 was successfully interrupted following strict infection control, suspension of new admissions, cohorting of residents by unit, and change to a disinfectant that inactivates adenovirus. Recognition of conjunctivitis as an appropriate reason for restricting movement of an infected resident may have prevented extensive viral transmission in this outbreak.

When a patient with severe diarrhea and flatulence is afebrile and the results of physical examination are negative, a food source should be suspected as the cause of the problem. Careful scrutiny of the patient's diet and a high index of suspicion may implicate the artificial sweetener sorbitol. Exclusion of sorbitol from the patient's diet is recommended in these cases before embarking on an extensive clinical investigation.

Military primary care resident research training varies widely among internal medicine, pediatrics, and family practice programs. The level of resident physician participation in clinical investigations appears to be less than 30% in the federal physician training system. This paper reviews the current research activity in the Army, Navy, and Air Force primary care programs. It also reports on the results of a research training workshop and offers strategies to enhance resident involvement in clinical investigations.

In public whirlpools, low disinfectant levels and inadequate monitoring are clearly a public health concern. Implementing guidelines published by the Centers for Disease Control seems to be the most reasonable approach to preventing dermatitis in persons who use these facilities. Physicians should be on the alert for well-demarcated rashes that may be associated with improperly maintained whirlpools.

Thousands of active-duty soldiers undergo weight evaluations each year and are subjected to disciplinary action if they fail to comply with established weight standards. This regulation consumes scarce available resources by requiring medical appointments. This study focuses on the use of bioelectrical impedance to determine body fat. It compared the physician's assistants with technicians for correlation of body fat percentage determinations. The correlation was r = .939 (p less than .0151) between the two groups. The use of technicians to determine body fat percentages using bioelectrical impedance appears to be a reasonable way to recover thousands of lost medical appointment slots.

During the course of Plasmodium lophurae infections in normal chickens, there was a sharp increase in the titer of a hemagglutinin which reacted better with trypsinized than with normal erythrocytes. This hemagglutinin was a typical "cold hemagglutinin" in that it was much more active at 4 C than at 37 C, was found in the macroglobulin fraction of the serum, was eluted from erythrocytes at 37 C, and was easily destroyed by 2-mercaptoethanol reduction. The injection of allogeneic erythrocytes into chickens prior to their exposure to P. lophurae resulted in a coexistent increase in cold hemagglutinin titers and enhanced resistance to parasitemia. Since this antibody was more active against altered erythrocytes than against normal erythrocytes, it may moderate resistance to malarial infections by specifically stimulating phagocytosis of parasitized erythrocytes.
