BACKGROUND: Refeeding syndrome is the gravest possible medical complication in malnourished patients undergoing refeeding in the hospital. We previously reported that males with malnutrition secondary to eating disorders required more calories and had longer hospital stays than females; however, sex differences in electrolyte abnormalities indicating refeeding syndrome risk remain unknown. The objective of this study was to assess differences in electrolyte abnormalities indicating refeeding syndrome risk among male and female adolescents and young adults with eating disorders hospitalized for medical instability. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the electronic medical records of 558 patients aged 9-25 years admitted to the University of California, San Francisco Eating Disorders Program for medical instability between May 2012 and August 2020. This research examined the link between persistence and cheating in 3‐ to 6‐year‐old children (2021–2022, N = 200, 100 boys; Mage = 4.85 years; all middle‐class Han Chinese). Study 1 used a challenging game to measure whether children would cheat when they were allowed to play the game unsupervised. Results indicated that children's situational, but not trait, persistence negatively correlated with cheating: the higher children's situational persistence, the less likely they cheated. Study 2 not only replicated the results of Study 1 but also discovered that children who cheated became less persistent afterward. Our research reveals a novel bidirectional relation between situational persistence and cheating and underscores the importance of nurturing persistence in early childhood as a strategy to foster honesty. Contemporary discourses on feminism’s role in Australian boys’ lives focus on how feminism might guide strategies that train boys to resist negative or ‘toxic’ performances of masculinity and instead encourage them to strive for a ‘healthy’ or ‘positive’ masculinity. In this article, I question whether training young people to attach themselves to a particular masculinity is aligned with a commitment to queer politics or serves the interests of boys, particularly queer boys or gender-diverse young people. I begin by tracing unsettled contests over masculinity's ontological foundations, including the roles of biology, identification, ‘gendered’ traits, and affective attachments. Through the method of autoethnography, I then explore issues that arise in the logic and implementation of common desires to train boys into ‘healthy’ men. I argue that, drawing on a queer liberation tradition, feminism can be an invitation to solidarity and freedom as well as a ‘way out’ or ‘refuge’ from the regulatory policing of gender norms associated with boyhood. Gender role attitudes have important implications at the individual, family, and societal levels, underscoring the importance of understanding their development. Although parents predominate in the socialization of gender role attitudes in childhood, the influence of friends increases during adolescence. In particular, cross-gender friends can provide unique insights and perspectives on another gender group, making them likely to shape gender role attitudes. However, empirical explorations of the link between gender role attitudes and cross-gender friendships have been rare. Furthermore, the few studies conducted have yielded ambiguous results and have struggled to separate the influence of cross-gender friends from a selection of such friendships based on gender role attitudes. This study addresses these limitations by using longitudinal social network models to assess the co-evolution of friendship networks and gender role attitudes among 3,194 youth (Mage = 15.2, SD = 0.67, 51% female) in German schools. The findings reveal that, after accounting for selection processes, boys with cross-gender friends develop more egalitarian gender role attitudes, while girls' attitudes are unaffected by cross-gender friendships. The relationships of 10 gifted high-achieving Millennial males and their fathers were the focus of this qualitative research study. Through in-depth interviews, six significant themes were identified: father's strong work ethic and self-sacrifice, father as teacher of skills and life lessons, father's design and maintenance of father–son rituals, father's quiet presence on the sidelines, father's authenticity and comfort with self, and father's respect for son's talents, decision making, and developing independence. Plato's Lysis simmers with masculinity and with challenges to masculine thinking. I argue that these features of the dialogue can illuminate each other. By attending to the ways in which Socrates undercuts a rationalistic approach to friendship, we can see that Socrates also poses a challenge to traditional Athenian models of masculine relationships. Although boys and girls start out performing similarly on STEM-related school subjects, the gap between them widens as they mature, leading to the underrepresentation of women in STEM fields at the college level and in the workforce. The current study examines the development of children's beliefs about men's and women's competence and other boys' and girls' learning ability for STEM and non-STEM topics. Children ages 5 through 9 (N = 134) judged adults to be less competent at professions they perceived as more difficult. Boys gave higher competence ratings to men than women in STEM and non-STEM fields, but girls only gave higher ratings to women than men in non-STEM fields. Children also viewed girls as less capable of learning about STEM subjects compared to non-STEM subjects, but they perceived boys as similarly capable of learning both STEM and non-STEM subjects. However, children's own school subject preferences and career aspirations (STEM or non-STEM) were not related to their judgments of adults or other children. The results point to the detrimental effects of gender stereotypes on children's beliefs about women's and girls' abilities in STEM. Aim: To assess testicular volume at puberty for boys who underwent orchidopexy at 9 or at 36 months compared to boys with spontaneous postnatal descent. Methods: At age 6 months, boys with congenital unilateral cryptorchidism were randomised to surgery at 9 or 39 months of age and followed to 16 years in parallel with boys with spontaneous postnatal descent. Ultrasound was done at 11 and 16 years to determine testicular volume. The ratio of the initially undescended testis to its scrotal counterpart was used to assess testicular growth. Results: At age 16, the ratio was lower (p < 0.00) in the late group compared to the early group. At 16 years, the spontaneously descended testes were significantly smaller than their scrotal counterparts but larger than the operated groups (early p < 0.01 and late p < 0.00). Conclusion: Our data at 16 years show that orchidopexy at 9 months results in better testicular growth compared to 3 years but did not reach the corresponding volumes of their scrotal counterparts. This indicates that earlier surgery is beneficial to testicular growth. Context There are only a few nationwide studies on boys with central precocious puberty (CPP) and the last Italian study is a case series of 45 boys that dates back to 2000. Objective We aimed to evaluate the causes of CPP in boys diagnosed during the last 2 decades in Italy and the relative frequency of forms with associated central nervous system (CNS) abnormalities on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) compared to idiopathic ones. Methods We performed a national multicenter retrospective study collecting data from 193 otherwise normal healthy boys with a diagnosis of CPP. Based on MRI findings, the patients were divided into: Group 1, no CNS abnormalities; Group 2, mild abnormalities (incidental findings) unrelated to CPP; and Group 3, causal pathological CNS abnormalities. Results The MRI findings show normal findings in 86%, mild abnormalities (incidental findings) in 8.3%, and causal pathological CNS abnormalities in 5.7% of the cases. In Group 3, we found a higher proportion of patients with chronological age at diagnosis < 7 years (P =.00001) and body mass index greater than +2 SDS (P <.01). Gonadotropin-releasing hormone analogue therapy was started in 183/193 subjects. The final height appeared in the range of the target height in all groups and in 9 patients in whom the therapy was not started. Conclusion In our study on a large nationwide cohort of boys referred for precocious puberty signs, the percentage of forms associated with CNS abnormalities was one of the lowest reported in the literature. Greater women's bargaining power and decision‐making within a household have been shown to increase investments in human capital. This study links women's participation in decision‐making in dairy production with household investment in girls and boys in health, nutrition, and education. We survey households in the urbanizing region of Bangalore, India. We utilize a multinomial treatment effects model to analyze the individual and household factors that are associated with women's participation in sole or joint decision‐making. We then assess how the type of decision‐making influences a household's investments. The results first show that female decision‐making households are more disadvantaged on average than other types of decision‐making households. Second, we observe that female decision‐makers for dairy production are more likely to have more children and earn a higher income than their husbands. Third, the main findings show that households in which women engage in joint decision‐making have higher levels of investment across all categories for girls. Conversely, investments decrease in education and nutrition for both girls and boys when the wife is the sole decision‐maker. From the perspective of microhistory, and with the concept of genre as a central analytical category, Pablo Daniel Arias presents the reconstruction of four biographies that take the reader not only into the particular experiences of certain individuals but also into the imaginaries of a time and a Nation. Here, the protagonists are not the big heroes or villains now in our national pantheon, and their stories are not related to great historic deeds. On the contrary, the book deals with three women's and an indigenous boy's courses from the moment of their forced drafting in the context of the euphemistic Desert Campaign up to their placement in Buenos Aires family homes or their recruitment in the Argentine Army. Introduction: Gamification-based learning (GBL) approach has the potential to enhance teaching and learning about reproductive and sexual health education (ReReki). There were six games (Let's X-plore, The Red Zone, Message Card for You, Box & Portal, This & That, and MonoReReki) created in ReReki module with the element of gamification (e.g.: milestones, rules, guides, points, competition). This study aimed to assess the gameful experience (G-EXP) of ReReki among adolescent boys in Sarawak's Southern region, specifically Kota Samarahan and Serian. Materials and methods: The questionnaire was subjected to a validation process that included content and face validity (n = 5), exploratory factor analysis (EFA, n = 175), confirmatory factor analysis (CFA, n = 165), and internal reliability. Boys between the ages of 13 and 17 who attend schools in Kota Samarahan and Serian participated in this study. This study used the original 65-items by Hogberg GAMEFULQUEST, which is divided into seven domains (accomplishment, challenge, competition, guided, immersion, playfulness, and social experience). Results: The panel experts rated all 35 items and chose six domains in G-EXP questionnaire as "essential" with a minimum 0.99 content validity ratio (CVR). However, the EFA procedure supported only five-factor domains (accomplishment, competition, guidance, playfulness, and social experience) with 32 items. The immersion domain was eliminated. The CFA procedure confirmed only 16 items and five domains, with a model fit of χ² = 198.00, df = 94, p < 0.001, χ²/df = 2.11, SRMR=0.04, CFI = 0.94 and TLI = 0.93 and RMSEA = 0.08. The Cronbach's alpha for five constructs varied between 0.72 and 0.91. Conclusion: This study proposed five domains and 16 items to assess the gameful experience of the ReReki module in adolescent boys. To enhance GBL in sexual and reproductive health education, the element of games must include competition, accomplishment, guidance, playfulness, and social experience domains. The emergence of gender-typical appearance in childhood appears to have important implications not only for child and adolescent social-emotional functioning but also for later working life. In the current study, we examined how parents' gender-typical appearance and children's gender similarity (to same- and other-gender peers) were related to young children's gender-typical appearance. We also explored differences in these associations between boys, girls, mothers, and fathers. Home visits were conducted with 74 Dutch two-parent (mother, father) families with both a son and daughter between the ages 3–6 years (96.6% White, 2.0% Asian, 1.4% other ethnicity). The gender-typical appearance of all four family members was assessed by trained and reliable coders in the videotaped observations from the home visits. As a measure of children's gender similarity, both parents reported on the similarity of their son and daughter to same-gender and other-gender peers. Generalized estimating equations showed that more gender-typical appearance of parents was associated with more gender-typical appearance of girls, but not of boys. No differences were found between mothers and fathers for the association between parent and child appearance. Moreover, children's gender similarity, evident in parents' perceived similarity of their child to peers of the same gender and dissimilarity to peers of the other gender, was associated with more gender-typical appearance in children. Background and Study Aim Since its inception in 1988, the EUROFIT database network has expanded significantly. This expansion has facilitated the use of standardized test batteries to evaluate physical fitness across diverse groups. This study therefore aimed to determine possible differences in EUROFIT scores between rural and urban male children in Kosovo aged 7 to 11 years and to suggest the underlying factors besides the differences. Material and Methods The study involved 500 schoolchildren from Kosovo, both rural and urban, aged between 7 and 11 years. They were equally distributed within the total sample. Measurements were conducted using EUROFIT and anthropometric tests. The results were subsequently analyzed and compared using a Student's t-test. Results The data revealed that urban children have a better starting point, benefiting from greater access to organized physical activities. Their diets, while less healthy, may enhance physical power. The rural environment fosters healthier growth and skill development in boys, particularly before and during the onset of puberty. Conclusions Urban children should maintain their regular organized physical activities throughout the school period. This will help them match their rural peers in terms of motor and functional abilities. However, morphological traits are becoming more similar between these groups as they enter the prepubertal stage. Future studies should investigate potential differences in female samples. Objective: To determine whether girls and boys with ADHD show distinct impairments in components of cognitive control across multiple tasks (go/no-go, stop signal, and flanker) and performance metrics (response speed, variability, and errors). Method: A total of 300 children, ages 8 to 12 years with ADHD (n = 210, 58 girls) or typically developing (TD; n = 99, 37 girls), completed all tasks. Traditional response measures (e.g., mean and standard deviation of reaction time, inhibition errors, and stop signal reaction time) and ex-Gaussian modeling of reaction times (mu, sigma, and tau) were analyzed. Results: Girls showed intact response inhibition in the context of slower response speed, while boys made more inhibition errors and did not slow their response speed. Both girls and boys with ADHD showed higher response variability and poorer interference control than TD children. Conclusion: Girls and boys with ADHD show distinct impairments in cognitive control that may be important for understanding the pathophysiology of ADHD. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

There is a global concern regarding boys' poor engagement in literacy activities. It is suggested that boys enjoy ways of learning that are active and have explicit goals. Readers' theater (RT) provides an active and collaborative means of practicing oral reading fluency, with a clear goal of performing for an audience at the end of training. In the context of an intervention study for struggling readers in grades 3 and 4 (9–10 years old), we investigated whether boys benefit more than girls from the goal to perform in readers' theater in terms of reading fluency development, engagement, and retrospective perception of their learning. We found that girls slightly outperformed boys in expressive reading and showed higher engagement in RT. Girls were also more interested in drama and more likely to participate in the study. However, boys showed a larger reduction in RT-related disaffection over time. In addition, boys in the goal-oriented program reported learning to act and immerse themselves in the text more often than boys in the practice-oriented RT. In contrast, girls reported learning these skills also in the practice-oriented RT. We conclude that the goal to perform in RT may be particularly helpful in engaging boys in RT. Objectives. This study aimed to experimentally identify and evaluate the effectiveness of using intensive interval programs to develop endurance in the educational process of 10-year-old boys. Materials and methods. The research involved twenty 10-year-old boys. Control (n = 10) and experimental (n = 10) groups were created. Children and their parents were informed of the features of the study and agreed to participate in the experiment. The study protocol was approved by the ethics committee of H.S. Skovoroda Kharkiv National Pedagogical University (Kharkiv, Ukraine). This study was conducted in accordance with the Declaration of Helsinki – Ethical Principles for Medical Research Involving Human Subjects (World Medical Association Declaration of Helsinki, 2013). The following research methods were used: scientific and methodological literature analysis, pedagogical testing, and mathematical statistics to process research results. Results. According to the results of the complex control of boys’ endurance abilities, statistically significant changes in all indicators in both experimental (p < 0.001) and control groups (p < 0.05) were established. The positive dynamics of the results favoured the experimental group. The most statistically significant changes took place in the experimental group on indicators of tests “Push-ups in a lying position” by 35.2% (p < 0.001), “Jumping with a rope for 1 min” (20.8%; p < 0.001), “Squatting on two legs for 1 min” (18.8%; p < 0.001), “From a lying position rising in a saddle for 1 min” (17.4%; p < 0.01). Callous-unemotional (CU) traits are associated with severe and persistent juvenile offending. CU traits are also associated with dampened emotional arousal, which suggests that fundamental frequency (f0), a measure of vocally-encoded emotional arousal, may serve as an accessible psychophysiological marker of CU traits in youth. This study investigated the associations between f0 range measured during an emotionally evocative task, CU traits, and emotion dysregulation in a mixed-gender sample of 168 justice-involved youth. For boys, after controlling for covariates, wider f0 range—indicating greater emotional arousal—was negatively associated with CU traits and positively associated with emotion dysregulation. For girls, no significant associations with f0 range emerged; however, CU traits were positively associated with emotion dysregulation. Findings suggest that f0 range may serve as a valid indicator of CU traits in JJ-involved boys, and that detained boys and girls with high CU traits are characterized by different profiles of emotion dysregulation. Existing across multiple media platforms, Barstool Sports ("Barstool") is one of the most important sport brands in the United States. While Barstool's critics frequently assert that the company is "racist," few, if any, detail how their racial politics work. Through a brief genealogy of Barstool's cultural history and a close critical reading of "The Barstool Documentary Series," we show how Barstool's racial politics operate through gender—specifically the affective appeal of Big Man sovereignty and the homosocial bonds of White fratriarchy —to create and normalize racially exclusive and White male-dominant social worlds that dovetail remarkably with racial and gender ideas that organize what Maskovsky calls Trump's "White nationalist postracialism" and the Proud Boys' "Western chauvinism." Abstract Background Mental health problems among adolescents is a global challenge. During the transition to adolescence, physiological, psychological, and social changes occur, leading to increased vulnerability. Thus, adolescent boys are less likely to seek help for mental health problems, which makes them an undetected group. The aim of this study was to gain a deeper understanding of adolescent boys’ experiences of mental health and school health service. Methods An inductive, qualitative design was chosen using three focus group interviews and three individual interviews. The study included 18 adolescent boys in 7th grade, in a school located in a medium-sized municipality in Norway. The interviews were analysed with qualitative content analysis. The consolidated criteria for reporting qualitative research (COREQ) were followed in this study. Results The overall theme “barriers towards seeking help”, and three categories— navigating stigma and privacy concerns; perceptions of self-responsibility; and lacking knowledge of mental health problems and help-seeking—described the adolescent boys experiences. The awareness and willingness to seek help were present, but there are barriers preventing the adolescent boys from acting on that willingness. Conclusions Lack of knowledge and a non-permissive culture for mental health problems among adolescents contributes to decreased help-seeking behaviour among adolescent boys. The school health service is the most related health service for adolescents and should focus on being available and strengthening empowerment and mental health literacy through the development and implementation of interventions to promote mental health.

Introduction: Ferritin has been implicated in body physiology and pathology. Smoking cigarettes (Cg) alters ferritin metabolism. Waterpipe (Wp) smoking has recently reemerged as a global epidemic and is linked to the most devastating diseases. However, the effect of smoking Wp on ferritin is not known. Therefore, the current study compared plasma ferritin in adolescents smoking Cg, Wp, both (CgWp) versus never smoked. Material and methods: Self-reported smoking status and plasma ferritin levels were obtained from 849 boys (n = 470) and girls (n = 379) in the 7th-10th grade (age range = 13-17 years). Results: The ANCOVA revealed a main effect for gender (p < 0.000) and smoking status (p < 0.02) without an interaction effect (p > 0.9). Post-hoc analysis showed greater plasma ferritin in the adolescents smoking Wp (p < 0.03) and CgWp (p < 0.004) versus never smoked. Gender-stratified ANCOVA showed a main effect for smoking status in the boys (p < 0.02) and girls (p < 0.03). Additional comparisons among the boys showed greater plasma ferritin in the Wp (p < 0.006) and CgWp (p < 0.008) smoking groups versus never smoking, without differences (p > 0.5) between Wp and CgWp smoking. Another subgroup comparison showed greater plasma ferritin in the girls smoking Cg (p < 0.02) and CgWp (p < 0.02) versus never smoking, without a difference (p > 0.3) between Cg and CgWp smoking. Conclusions: The results indicate that ferritin is elevated in adolescent smokers, particularly the boys smoking Wp and CgWp and in the girls smoking Cg and CgWp. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Dialectical behaviour therapy (DBT) is a popular treatment that targets emotional dysregulation, a key feature associated with borderline personality disorder (BPD). The majority of available literature exploring the effectiveness of DBT is based on research concerning female samples. Therefore, the application and efficacy of DBT as a treatment intervention for men and boys remains unclear. Methods: Multiple research databases were searched using a systematic review process for articles that reported on the use of DBT with male samples across any outcome measure and included pre‐ and post‐treatment symptom scores. Results: Nineteen studies met the inclusion criteria. Studies indicated that the application of DBT to male samples varies. Vast differences were found in treatment length, use of DBT modes and population settings. Most studies identified some benefits of DBT; however, the sample sizes were small and there was large heterogeneity across the studies. Conclusions: There is preliminary evidence supporting the use of DBT for males, specifically targeting anger and violence as well as emotional dysregulation and suicidality. Despite this, the limitations and heterogeneity from the current studies preclude the current review from drawing any definitive conclusions about the overall efficacy of the treatment in this population. The purpose of this study was to investigate the influence of biological sex, independent of differences in aerobic fitness and body fatness, on the change in gastrointestinal temperature (ΔTgi) and whole body sweat rate (WBSR) of children exercising under uncompensable heat stress. Seventeen boys (means ± SD; 13.7 ± 1.3 yr) and 18 girls (13.7 ± 1.4 yr) walked for 45 min at a fixed rate of metabolic heat production per kg body mass (8 W·kg−1) in 40°C and 30% relative humidity. Sex and peak oxygen consumption (V̇ o 2peak) were entered into a Bayesian hierarchical general additive model (HGAM) for Tgi. Sex, V̇ o 2peak, and the evaporative requirement for heat balance (Ereq) were entered into a Bayesian hierarchical linear regression for WBSR. For 26 (12 M and 14 F) of the 35 children with measured body composition, body fat percentage was entered in a separate HGAM and hierarchical linear regression for Tgi and WBSR, respectively. Conditional on sex-specific mean V̇ o 2peak, ΔTgi was 1.00°C [90% credible intervals (Crl): 0.84, 1.16] for boys and 1.17°C [1.01, 1.33] for girls, with a difference of 0.17°C [−0.39, 0.06]. When sex differences in V̇ o 2peak were accounted for, the difference in ΔTgi between boys and girls was 0.01°C [−0.25, 0.22]. The difference in WBSR between boys and girls was 0.03 L·h−1 [−0.02, 0.07], when isolated from differences in Ereq. The difference in ΔTgi between boys and girls was −0.10°C [−0.38, 0.17] when sex differences in body fat (%) were accounted for. Biological sex did not independently influence the ΔTgi and WBSR of children exercising under uncompensable heat stress. Boys and girls often differ in physiological characteristics other than biological sex, such as aerobic fitness and body fat percentage, which may confound interpretations. In 2019, French health authorities extended the recommendation for human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination to include boys aged 11 to 19 years. We describe HPV vaccination practices among French general practitioners (GPs) since this recommendation wasapplied. We also identified factors associated with the propensity to propose HPV vaccination to boys. Cross-sectional study, between May and August 2022, among French GPs using a questionnaire asking about the GPs, their practices, and opinions regarding HPV vaccination, including whether they systematically proposed HPV vaccination to eligible boys or not. We investigated factors associated with systematic proposal of HPV vaccination, using univariate and multivariate logistic regression. In total, 360 GPs participated (76.6% females; mean age 34.7 ± 7.8 years; 22.9% had additional training in gynecology or pediatrics); 5.5% reported that they systematically offered HPV vaccination to boys prior to the recommendation, whereas 61.2% do so systematically since the recommendation. Factors associated with systematic proposal to boys (post recommendation) were female GP sex (78.6% versus 66.2%; OR = 2.0 [95% confidence interval (CI) 1.2–3.3]; p = 0.007) and systematic proposal prior to the recommendation (8.5% versus 0.7%; OR = 13.3 [1.7–101.7]; p = 0.01). Protection against HPV-induced cancer was cited as an argument to vaccinate girls (98.3% versus 89.2%; p < 0.0001); while reducing the risk of transmission was more commonly an argument to vaccinate boys (78.1% versus 51.8%; p < 0.0001). This study underlines the positive impact of the official recommendation for HPV vaccination of boys on the attitude of GPs, with an increase in the systematic proposal of HPV vaccination to boys. Background: Mental health problems among adolescents is a global challenge. During the transition to adolescence, physiological, psychological, and social changes occur, leading to increased vulnerability. Thus, adolescent boys are less likely to seek help for mental health problems, which makes them an undetected group. The aim of this study was to gain a deeper understanding of adolescent boys' experiences of mental health and school health service. Methods: An inductive, qualitative design was chosen using three focus group interviews and three individual interviews. The study included 18 adolescent boys in 7th grade, in a school located in a medium-sized municipality in Norway. The interviews were analysed with qualitative content analysis. The consolidated criteria for reporting qualitative research (COREQ) were followed in this study. Results: The overall theme "barriers towards seeking help", and three categories— navigating stigma and privacy concerns; perceptions of self-responsibility; and lacking knowledge of mental health problems and help-seeking—described the adolescent boys experiences. The awareness and willingness to seek help were present, but there are barriers preventing the adolescent boys from acting on that willingness. Conclusions: Lack of knowledge and a non-permissive culture for mental health problems among adolescents contributes to decreased help-seeking behaviour among adolescent boys. The school health service is the most related health service for adolescents and should focus on being available and strengthening empowerment and mental health literacy through the development and implementation of interventions to promote mental health. Recent work suggests that the stereotype associating brilliance with men may underpin women's underrepresentation in prestigious careers, yet little is known about its development and consequences in non‐Western contexts. The present research examined the onset of this stereotype and its relation to children's motivation in 5‐ to 7‐year‐old Korean children (N = 272, 50% girls, tested 2021 to 2022). At age 7, children attributed brilliance to men when evaluating Asians and Whites, and girls became less interested in participating in intellectually challenging tasks than boys. Notably, this gender difference in interest was mediated by children's endorsement of the stereotype. The generalizable early emergence of the gender brilliance stereotype and its detrimental implications press the need to tackle gender imbalance in early childhood. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Post-activation potentiation (PAP) describes the enhancement of twitch torque following a conditioning contraction (CC) in skeletal muscle. In adults, PAP may be related to muscle fibre composition and is accompanied by a decrease in motor unit (MU) firing rates (MUFRs). Muscle fibre composition and/or activation is different between children and adults. This study examined PAP and MU firing patterns of the potentiated knee extensors in boys and men. Methods: Twenty-three boys (10.5 ± 1.3 years) and 20 men (23.1 ± 3.3 years) completed familiarization and experimental sessions. Maximal isometric evoked-twitch torque and MU firing patterns during submaximal contractions (20% and 70% maximal voluntary isometric contraction, MVIC) were recorded before and after a CC (5 s MVIC). PAP was calculated as the percent-increase in evoked-twitch torque after the CC. MU firing patterns were examined during submaximal contractions before and after the CC using Trigno Galileo surface electrodes (Delsys Inc) and decomposition algorithms (NeuroMap, Delsys Inc). MU action potential amplitudes (MUAPamp) and MUFRs were calculated for each MU and exponential MUFR-MUAPamp relationships were calculated for each participant and trial. Results: PAP was higher in men than in boys (98.3 ± 37.1% vs. 68.8 ± 18.3%, respectively; p = 0.002). Following potentiation, the rate of decay of the MUFR-MUAPamps relationship decreased in both contractions, with a greater decrease among boys during the high-intensity contractions. Conclusion: Lower PAP in the boys did not coincide with smaller changes in potentiated MU firing patterns, as boys had greater reductions in MUFRs with potentiation compared with men in high-intensity contractions. Cross-education has been studied extensively with adults, examining the training effects on contralateral homologous muscles. There is less information on the cross-education effects on contralateral heterologous muscles and scant information comparing these responses between adults and youth. The objective was to compare cross-education training effects in male youth and adults to contralateral homologous and heterologous muscles. Forty-two male children (10-13-years) and 42 adults (18-21-years) were tested before and following an 8-week unilateral, dominant or nondominant arm, chest press (CP) training program or control group (14 subjects each). Unilateral testing assessed dominant and nondominant limb strength with leg press and CP 1 repetition maximum (1RM), knee extensors, elbow extensors (EE), elbow flexors, and handgrip maximum voluntary isometric contraction (MVIC) strength and shot put distance and countermovement jump height. Upper-body tests demonstrated large magnitude increases, with children overall exceeding adults (p = 0.05- p < 0.0001, η² : 0.51, 10.4 ± 11.1%). The dominant trained limb showed significantly higher training adaptations than the nondominant limb for the adults with CP 1RM ( p = 0.03, η² : 0.26, 6.7 ± 11.5%) and EE ( p = 0.008, η² : 0.27, 8.8 ± 10.3%) MVIC force. Unilateral CP training induced significantly greater training adaptations with the ipsilateral vs. contralateral limb ( p = 0.008, η² : 0.93, 27.8 ± 12.7%). In conclusion, children demonstrated greater training adaptations than adults, upper-body strength increased with no significant lower-body improvements, and ipsilateral training effects were greater than contralateral training in adults. This paper analyses whether living in a locality with high crime against women affects the probability of early marriage—that is, marriage before the legal age of marriage of girls. Using a nationally representative longitudinal data set and tackling the potential endogeneity of local crime rates, we find that perceived crime against women in the locality significantly increases the likelihood of early marriage of girls, while there is no such effect on boys of comparable age group. We also find no such effect of gender-neutral crimes (such as theft and robbery) on the likelihood of early marriage of girls. Moreover, we find that the relationship holds only in conservative households where the purdah system is practised, and also in the northern region of India, where patriarchal culture and gender norms are stronger than in the southern region. A sensitivity analysis assessing the potential impact of unobservable confounders suggests that our estimates are unlikely to be affected by omitted variable bias. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: Histological data on muscle fiber size and proportion in (very) young typically developing (TD) children is not well documented and data on capillarization and satellite cell content are also lacking. Aims: This study investigated the microscopic properties of the medial gastrocnemius muscle in growing TD children, grouped according to age and gender to provide normal reference values in healthy children. Methods: Microbiopsies of the medial gastrocnemius (MG) muscle were collected in 46 TD boys and girls aged 2-10 years subdivided into 4 age groups (2-4, 4-6, 6-8 and 8-10 years). Sections were immunostained to assess fiber type cross-sectional area (fCSA) and proportion, the number of satellite cells (SC), capillary to fiber ratio (C/F), capillary density for type I and II fiber (CFD), capillary domain, capillary-to-fiber perimeter exchange index (CFPE) and heterogeneity index. fCSA was normalized to fibula length2 and the coefficient of variation (CV) was calculated to reflect fCSA intrasubject variability. Results: Absolute fCSA of all fibers increased with age (r = 0.72, p < 0.001) but more in boys (+112%, p < 0.05) than in girls (+48%, p > 0.05) Normalized fCSA, CV and fiber proportion did not differ between age groups and gender. C/F was strongly correlated with age in boys (r = 0.83, p < 0.001), and to a lesser extent in girls (r = 0.37, p = 0.115), while other capillary parameters as well as the number of SC remained stable with increasing age in boys and girls. Discussion: This study provides reference values of histological measures in MG according to age in normally growing boys and girls. The vaccine coverage against human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination remains low in France. The objective of this study was to study adolescent perceptions by comparing boys and girls, in order to build effective school-based interventions. This paper presents a cross-sectional study in French middle school pupils. They completed online questionnaires on their knowledge and attitudes toward the HPV vaccine, HPV vaccination status, their intention, reasons to vaccinate or not to vaccinate, and psychological antecedents of vaccination. A structural equation modeling (SEM) analysis was used to test the hypothesized model. The participants are 818 pupils aged from 12 to 16 years (M age = 13.78). Most pupils were in the pre-contemplative stage (62.7 % of boys and 40.8 % of girls). SEM analysis indicated that the relationship between the level of HPV knowledge, the representations of vaccines in general, and vaccine intention was mediated by attitudes towards the HPV vaccine among both boys and girls. These findings reveal a high percentage of boys who do not feel concerned by the HPV vaccine and highlight the need to consider the psychological antecedents of vaccination in general in addition to the specific attitudes to the HPV vaccine. International studies have established that reading for enjoyment is linked to higher reading outcomes however there are local variations of the relationship and nuances associated with gender and economic contours. The aim of this study was to examine 318 Australian Year 3 (7 to 8-year-olds) boys' and girls' self-reported enjoyment for reading, reading frequency, and achievement on national reading tests. Findings showed that students who indicated higher levels of enjoyment for fiction and non-fiction, and who read more frequently, indicated higher reading achievement. Students attending schools in higher demographic communities tended to attain higher reading scores. An unexpected and significant finding was that fiction was the most favoured reading genre for boys and that more girls had higher levels of enjoyment for non-fiction than boys. These findings challenge the long-standing myth that boy's prefer non-fiction. The study demonstrates the importance of promoting reading enjoyment – particularly fiction – early in students' schooling trajectory, with special consideration for boys and students from economically marginalised communities. This study aimed to explore the relationship between parental coparenting and depression among Chinese young adolescents and potential gender differences via network analysis. Thus, 793 fourth-grade students (girls: 281 (35.40%), Mage = 9.99 years, SD = 0.59 years) were recruited from three primary schools in Northern China. The young adolescents rated their depression and perceived paternal and maternal coparenting. Network analysis was used to detect the central nodes and bridge mechanisms among coparenting and depressive components. The results indicated that paternal and maternal consistency as well as maternal conflict were the most central components in the coparenting–depression network. Paternal consistency, maternal conflict and paternal disparagement in coparenting, as well as somatic complaints and positive affect in adolescents' depression, exhibited high bridge strengths, suggesting those constructs served as vital bridges to connect the two subnetworks. Moreover, paternal consistency showed a higher bridge strength in the boys' network than the girls' one, whereas the edge linking adolescents' positive affect to paternal disparagement and integrity was stronger in the girls' network. This study contributes to the understanding of associations between parental coparenting and young adolescents' depression and offered insights into targeted interventions for early adolescent depression by enhancing parental coparenting. Whole-class discussions in mathematics are envisioned as spaces for the sharing of ideas and making connections among them. We pursue how Palestinian/Arab Israeli teachers consider making use of multiple solutions to a task: which three they indicate that they would select for a whole-class discussion and in what sequence. Under the hypothetical assumption that each solution has been authored by boys and girls (with below-average and with above-average grades), how do teachers consider distributing opportunities to present the designated solutions? Participants most commonly selected a direct model, an error, or an inductive approach supported by a geometric representation, typically in that sequence (or error, direct model, inductive). Participants tended to indicate that they would invite a girl with below-average grades to present the direct model; a student with above-average grades to present the error; and a boy with above-average grades to present the inductive/geometric solution. Our analysis extends to participants' explanations of their choices and illuminates their intentions: making use of existing status arrangements, leveraging existing hierarchies to benefit others in the class, or modifying the indicated student's status by making space for them to participate on the public floor. Purpose: To identify the characteristics of age groups of children from 10 to 14 years old in terms of the ratio of body weight and length, in particular, the relative number of children with overweight and obesity, and to develop recommendations for reducing body weight for children 10-14 years old. Material and Methods: An observational crosssectional survey of the health status (overweight and obesity) of school children was conducted on sample 500 school children from Bosnia and Herzegovina (Republic Srpska entity), which included 246 boys and 254 girls, aged 10 to 14 years. Anthropometric data including Body height (BH), Body weight (BW) and age were collected from all elementary school children. Body mass index (BMI) is an anthropometric index of weight and height that is calculated by dividing a person's weight (kg) by the square of their height (m2). BMI participants was estimated with the Percentile BMI calculator for children and teens aged 2-19 years. The studied children were defined as underweight, normal (healthy)-weight, overweight and obese according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) child growth characteristics for age, sex, and BMI. Basic central and dispersion parameters (Mean, Min., Max., Range, SD, CI 95%, CV%, Skew., Kurt.) were calculated for each variable. To confirm normality, the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test was applied (p>0.05). The homogeneity of variance was tested with Levene's test. The nutritional status of the subjects was assessed using percentile values on the basis of which the percentile categories are calculated. Statistical procedures and analyzes were performed using the statistical package STATISTICA 10.0 for Windows. Results: The dynamics of changes in the relative number of children with overweight and obesity from 10 to 14 years old was revealed. The lowest number of overweight and obese students was recorded at the age of 14 (1% <). The results of malnutrition in boys point to the conclusion that it is present in a smaller percentage, from 1.96% (age 14) to 6.12% (age 12). The largest number of girls at the age of 13 were overweight, 10 (19.23%) and obese (2%<), and then at the age of 10 and 11 (overweight 15.68% vs. 13.72%, and obesity 1.96% vs 3.92%). Malnutrition as a category is in a slightly higher percentage than for boys, ranging from 3.92% (11 and 12 years) to 7.84% (10 years). Conclusions: If a child is overweight at any age, this should be an alarming signal, as it can provoke weight gain in adulthood or with the slightest decrease in self-control. Therefore, the best strategy would be to create conditions for a child's development in which he will receive joy from other sources, and not just from food and activities that do not require physical activity. Finding even a relatively small number of overweight and obese children is not a benign problem. It requires its own solution, helping such children understand their problem and overcome it. Abstract This article contributes to the stock of scientific knowledge by showing the effect of orphan status on child labour and school attendance in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). While the abolition of child labour is undeniably one of the major tasks assigned to the International Labour Organization (ILO) when it was founded, child labour remains a severe problem worldwide. In many parts of the world, especially in developing countries, children do not have access to school. Instead of ending up in school, millions of children are forced to engage in child labour in income-generating and non-income-generating activities. Little researchers have yet made it possible to obtain simultaneous information on child labour, school attendance and orphaned children. This paper describes the research that tries to make such a connection. Data used is from the out-of-school children and adolescents (OOSC-DRC-2012) survey organised by the Ministry of Primary, secondary and Vocational Education. Using a bivariate probit econometric model and testing the endogeneity with an instrumental variables approach, funding of the analysis supports the assumption of a significant negative relationship between child labour and school attendance. The result shows also that being orphaned reduces a child's likelihood of school attendance and increases the probability of entering the labour market. It is underlined that most children are present in non-income-generating than income-generating activities.
