This study analyzes the relationship between differentiation of self, emotional intelligence and self-esteem in a sample of 285 Spanish subjects, 191 women and 94 men, aged between 18 and 85 years. Participants answered a sociodemographic questionnaire, the Differentiation of Self Scale (DSS), the Trait Meta-Mood Scale-24 (TMMS-24) and the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (RSES). Results showed that differentiation of self and its dimensions, emotional intelligence dimensions and self-esteem were interrelated. Furthermore, emotional attention, emotional repair, and self-esteem were related to age. It was also found that men had greater emotional cutoff, while women showed more emotional reactivity and higher emotional attention and clarity. Finally, differentiation of self predicted both emotional intelligence and self-esteem, and the relationship between differentiation of self and self-esteem was mediated by clarity and emotional repair. The results, which have important implications for clinical and research fields, are discussed and new lines of research are proposed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We describe Richard Schwartz's development of the Internal Family Systems model (IFS) from his position as a Structural/Strategic family therapist. Four decades ago, Schwartz struggled to help clients who exhibited serious risk of harm to self and others. Through a process of inquiry, he began to work with the positive intentions behind his most challenging clients' harmful thoughts and behaviors. He applied foundational ideas from family systems thinking to patterns of internal experiences. As he experimented with ways of applying these ideas, he created an approach to healing. We summarize the IFS model delineating ways a range of family systems theory and practice inform its development and contribute to its best practice. Our purposes are to inform IFS practitioners who are not trained in foundational family systems models as well as to acknowledge the significant contributions family therapy theories made in the development and best practice of the IFS model. This essay is an exercise in the phenomenology – and post-phenomenology – of reading in relation to Elizabeth Bowen's The Hotel (1927), a novel that thematizes and reflects on the uncanny status of reading and provokes in response an experimental critical ABC. Special attention is given to the work of French psychoanalyst Charles Baudouin in foregrounding the role and effects of suggestion in reading. Engaging with the concerns of writing and reading fiction in the 'Anthropocene' (especially in the form of what is here called twi-fi) and drawing on notions of literary anachrony, cryptaesthetic resistance, queerness and deferred effect, the essay offers a new critical appreciation of the singularity of Bowen's novel. - Abstract
Previous studies on parent to child anxiety have not examined the role of the mother and father’s differentiation levels on the child’s anxiety. While there have been mixed findings, some studies have found an association between parent and child anxiety. Using anxiety and differentiation data from the Flourishing Families Project (FFP) Waves I and III, this study examined differentiation’s role to the association of anxiety from parent to child. The FFP data was gathered in a longitudinal study comprised of 500 total families, with this article looking at the 337 two-parent families. ANOVA and group comparison tests amongst 4 classes, all with varying levels of parental differentiation. Class 1 (both parents had high differentiation) and 3 (father low, mother high) had the lowest child anxiety. The repeated measures test was done to find whether anxiety levels varied by the differentiation profile and to determine whether the associations between child anxiety and parent anxiety varied among the profiles. Lower levels of differentiation were associated with higher levels of anxiety in both parents. Child anxiety was highest in the class 4, where both parents had low differentiation. Engaging parents in treatment for their differentiation levels could be beneficial for treating the anxiety of their children.

Background: Dyspraxia, also included under the term Developmental Coordination Disorder (DCD), is a condition characterised by an impairment in motor skills function which impacts negatively on other aspects of daily living such as athletic capability, handwriting, self-esteem and social interaction. However, no effective therapy currently exists to address all of these issues within this group. The aim of the present study therefore was to investigate whether a complementary therapy, called Fascia Bowen therapy, would improve neuromuscular function and psychological wellbeing in males aged 8-11 (at Primary School) diagnosed with this condition. Methods: A group of 10 participants meeting the criteria of 15th centile or below in motor skills functioning, received a Fascia Bowen therapy treatment session from a qualified Fascia Bowen practitioner each week for 6 weeks. All participants’ motor skills function were assessed by an occupational therapist before and after the end of the intervention using the Motor Skills Assessment Battery for Children test (MABC-2). Additionally, parents, teachers and participants completed questionnaires measuring self-esteem, social skills, social interaction, behaviour and scholastic function before and after the intervention. Results: The participants showed significant improvement in neuromuscular function over time using the MABC-2. However, no significant changes were shown in the other measures of functioning. Although parents did provide some anecdotal reports about positive changes in real life, these were not reflected in the measures. The results suggest that while improvements were shown as significant in the motor domain, which was the focus of the therapy, the results did not translate to other domains of life over time. 13 Conclusions: Further research is necessary to test the efficacy of the treatment’s effects using a larger sample, a control group and a longer intervention timescale. A six week intervention period may not be sufficient to show significant changes in self-esteem, social skills, social interaction, behaviour and scholastic functions which have deep-rooted constructs developed over many years. These may therefore take a long time to change.

From the first electric lights in London along Pall Mall, and in the Holborn Viaduct in 1878 to the nationalisation of National Grid in 1947, the narrative of the simple ascendency of a new technology over its outdated predecessor is essential to the way we have imagined electric light in London at the end of the nineteenth century. However, as this thesis will demonstrate, the interplay between gas and electric light - two co-existing and competing illuminary technologies - created a particular and peculiar landscape of light, a 'lightscape', setting London apart from its contemporaries throughout the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Indeed, this narrative forms the basis of many assertions made in critical discussions of artificial illumination and technology in the late-twentieth century; however, this was not how electric light was understood at the time nor does it capture how electric light both captivated and eluded the imagination of contemporary Londoners. The influence of the electric light in the representations of London is certainly a literary question, as many of those writing during this period of electrification are particularly attentive to the city's rich and diverse lightscape. Though this has yet to be made explicit in existing scholarship, electric lights are the nexus of several important and ongoing discourses in the study of Victorian, Post-Victorian, Modernist, and twentieth-century literature. This thesis will address how the literary influence of the electric light and its relationship with its illuminary predecessors transcends the widespread electrification of London to engage with an imaginary London, providing not only a connection with our past experiences and conceptions of the city, modernity, and technology but also an understanding of what Frank Mort describes as the 'long cultural reach of the nineteenth century into the post-war period'.

This study examined the Bowenian construct of Self-Differentiation (SD), defined as the degree to which a person can think according to their personal beliefs while remaining emotionally connected to the family. This study examined the degree to which negative emotionality accounted for the relationship between SD and Relationship Satisfaction (RS). Emotional Cutoff (EC) emerged as the sole predictor of RS. When Trait Anxiety (TA) was entered into the model it mediated between EC and RS. We discuss the importance of treating anxiety of the individual in family therapy and that SD may best be understood when taking anxiety into account. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The topic of spirituality stands out in recent years as being heavily addressed in the field of psychological counseling and guidance. A similar picture also stands out when looked at from the angle of family therapies. When looking at studies made in the field of family therapy, studies addressing the aspect of family spirituality are seen to continue increasing. Bowen’s Family Systems Theory is one of these approaches. Bowen Family Theory handles the family as a system and attempts to solve the individuals’ problems by considering the environment within which they are found. The individual’s surroundings contain many situations, from family to culture, siblings to religious beliefs, from traditions to customs, and from relationships to spirituality. According to Bowen, spirituality is the reflection of the topic of God in relationships, and located foremost within the theory, a spiritual aspect is found in all important concepts, including ego differentiation and triangulations. Encountering religious and spiritual elements is possible in many of the concepts of Bowen Family Systems. This study handles the perspective of spirituality in the Bowen Family Systems Theory as one of the theories of family systems and the place of spirituality within Bowen Family Systems. In this context, first the Bowen Family Systems Theory is briefly introduced, then the study attempts to explain the spiritual dimension of the theory in light of some of its basic concepts. In addition, the Bowen approach is addressed from the Islamic perspective, and a case sample has been presented related to the intervention methods that can be used in this situation.

This study examined the processes of triangulation and differentiation as theorized in Bowen family systems theory. Bowen family systems theory suggests that those who are more differentiated are less likely to triangulate children. Triangulation, which is the process by which a couple involves a child in their dyadic conflict, has been found to be associated with poor outcomes for children. In addition, Bowen postulated that anxiety serves a mediating role in the relationship between differentiation and triangulation. These theoretical propositions were tested using a sample of 332 married couples studied over a 5-year period of time. Results from an actor-partner interdependence model indicated that husbands' differentiation predicted subsequent triangulation, but the relationship was not significant among wives. Results also failed to support the mediating role of anxiety. These findings point to the need for additional research to explore gender differences and the role of anxiety in Bowen Theory. This article offers a heuristic framework that links several key aspects of the psychological models of John Bowlby, Heinz Kohut, and Murray Bowen, generating insight into an underlying set of isomorphic patterns in the shaping and reshaping of the self. This theoretical matrix of interlocking perspectives can facilitate our understanding of the formation – and promote the transformation – of selves as they engage within their familial and social worlds. The first section introduces some of these three authors' key theoretical and therapeutic contributions and provides our rationale for linking some of their ideas and intervention strategies. The second section offers a brief review of earlier attempts at partial integration of these theories and describes the distinctiveness of our proposal. The third section outlines our proposed heuristic framework, which identifies some of the underlying structural similarities in the formation of the self, described in different ways and with varying emphases by these three scholars. Finally, we briefly explore some of the implications of the model for producing clinical insights into distinctive pathways for the transformation of the self. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Warfare phobia has often been dealt with in literature, depicting the realistic view towards violence in wartimes, and trying to help the public discard the romantic illusion about heroism on the battlefield. During the twentieth century, writers who experienced the disastrous consequences of the Two World Wars, like the poets of World War I, Edith Sitwell, Virginia Woolf, Ernest Hemingway, and Stephen Crane, denounced the false propaganda and romantic mottos of the war as a sacred and heroic mission. Similarly, Daphne du Maurier and Elizabeth Bowen endeavour to condemn the war and its negative consequences in their fiction, aiming at enhancing social and political awareness among their readers. This study deals with two anti-war stories: Bowen’s “The Demon Lover” and du Maurier’s “The Birds” and focuses on their pacifist tendencies and the human messages they intend to deliver in these works. - Abstract
This qualitative phenomenological study aimed to examine the psychosocial impacts of unresolved grief and trauma within the dynamics of parenting styles of African American women. The theories used to guide this study include family systems theory, first introduced by Murray Bowen in the 1950s, and attachment theory, developed by John Bowlby in 1969, as they intersect and provide a foundation for understanding emotional bonds, social relationships, and parent-child attachment wounds at the core. This phenomenological qualitative study answered the following central research question: “How has trauma exposure affected African American women’s awareness of their traumas within their lived experience and parenting practices?” Data were collected from 15 African American women. Criteria for this study were participants who were born in the United States, at least 25 years of age, a parent, stepparent, or adoptive parent to one or more children, and have adverse childhood experiences. Audio recordings, participant observations, and a reflective journal were used to collect, organize, and analyze the data. The research findings identified eight themes and 12 subthemes to address awareness of trauma and barriers to counseling. Each theme answered the research questions of this phenomenological study. Results from the study suggested that African American women experience contextually multiple psychosocial and intergenerational factors that influence self-perception, interpersonal relationships, help-seeking attitudes, and parenting practices. The research from this study contributed to the gap in the literature on parenting styles, parent-child attachment across generations, and stress-related disorders in the family dynamics of African American mothers. This study provided recommendations for future research on transgenerational trauma and the psychosocial factors related to the lived experiences of African American women in the parenting role. Mine pit lakes (‘pit lakes’) are new aquatic ecosystems of the Anthropocene. Potentially hundreds of meters deep, these lakes are prominent in the landscape and in the public consciousness. However, the ecology of pit lakes is underrepresented in the literature. The broad goal of this research was to determine the environmental drivers of pelagic microbe assemblages in Australian coal pit lakes. The overall experimental design was four lakes sampled three times, top and bottom, in 2019. Instrument chains were installed in lakes and measurements of in situ water quality and water samples for metals, metalloids, nutrients and microbe assemblage were collected. Lakes were monomictic and the timing of mixing was influenced by high rainfall events. Water quality and microbial assemblages varied significantly across space and time, and most taxa were rare. Lakes were moderately saline and circumneutral; Archeans were not prevalent. Richness also varied by catchment. Microbial assemblages correlated to environmental variables, and no one variable was consistently significant, spatially or temporally. Study lakes were dominated by ‘core’ taxa exhibiting temporal turnover likely driven by geography, water quality and interspecific competition, and the presence of water chemistry associated with an artificial aquifer likely influenced microbial community composition. Pit lakes are deceptively complex aquatic ecosystems that host equally complex pelagic microbial communities. This research established links between microbial assemblages and environmental variables in pit lakes and determined core communities; the first steps towards developing a monitoring program using microbes.

The purpose of this article is to apply Bowen family systems theory to work with families involved in the child welfare system. An overview of family systems theory is provided, and then specific tenets of Bowen family systems theory are presented. The authors highlight incidents within the child welfare setting that can be conceptualized through Bowen family therapy terms and concepts. A case study is used to highlight how this theory could be applied in practice. Furthermore, recommendations for child welfare practice and policy implications are discussed, utilizing the lens of a Bowenian family systems approach. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper explores the portrayal of the Anglo-Irish in Elizabeth Bowen’s The Last September. Bowen writes from personal experience with a strong sense of irony to explore the relationships of this declining class and their relationship with their adopted homeland. As an inhabitant of an Anglo-Irish Big House, Bowen writes from the perspective of the Anglo–Irish but views their deteriorating existence with the clarity of one far more removed. Bowen’s life mirrors that of the protagonist Lois, struggling with issues of identity and escape from an antiquated society. The essay notes the effects this lack of identity has on the characters in the novel and the Anglo–Irish class as a whole at the time it is set. Issues of detachment from land and heritage, lack of communication and relationships between characters, and the ignorance of a middle and upper social class, the Anglo-Irish, to understand their deterioration during the years of the Irish War of Independence are also explored.

ARID regions , *CLIMATE change , *SURFACE energy , *EVAPOTRANSPIRATION , *NATIVE plants , *LANDSCAPES , *CULTURAL landscapes - Abstract
• Landscapes exhibit significant differences in micrometeorological variables. • Removing native vegetation reduces the net radiation on the landscape. • The evapotranspiration (ET) is lower in the cactus landscape. • Land use change does not affect the seasonality of energy fluxes. • Variation in water and energy availability affects ET more than landscape type. The comparison of energy exchanges between different landscapes is very valuable for understanding the consequences of deforestation and land use change on the climate. In this study, we analyzed micrometeorological variables, energy fluxes, and actual evapotranspiration over four landscapes of the Brazilian semi-arid region (preserved Caatinga – CAA, regenerating Caatinga – REGE, cactus landscape – CAM and deforested landscape – DEFA). Micrometeorological measurements (air temperature and relative humidity, vapor pressure deficit), net radiation (R N), latent heat (LE), sensible (H) and soil heat (G) fluxes, actual evapotranspiration (ET), and soil water storage variation (Δ S) were obtained in landscapes from October 2018 to September 2020. LE and H were calculated based on the Bowen ratio method. Significant differences were noted between micrometeorological variables (temperature and relative humidity, and vapor pressure deficit) and energy flux among the four landscapes. The four surfaces exhibited, on average, lower LE values when compared to H. At CAA landscape, 35% of the R N was used for LE, 64% for H, and 1% for G, versus 33% for LE, 65% for H, and 2% for G at REGE; 33% R N for LE, 65% for H and 2% for G at CAM, and 40% for LE, 59% for H and 1% for G at DEFA. The evapotranspiration for regenerating Caatinga (1.62 mm day−1), cactus (1.59 mm day−1), and deforested area (1.90 mm day−1) were higher than the preserved Caatinga (1.40 mm day−1). However, seasonal variations of the ET were more associated with fluctuations in R N , rainfall, and Δ S than with the type of land use. It is concluded that the removal of Caatinga by landscapes such as regenerating Caatinga, cactus plantations, and deforested area significantly modifies micrometeorological variables, energy fluxes, and the evapotranspiration, but their seasonality depends on the regime availability of water and energy. - Abstract
The Bowen's disease (MB), also known as squamous cell carcinoma in situ is a neoplastic skin disease that was clinically and histologically individualized by Darier in 1914. The isolated lesions in the majority of patients can be multiplied in 10 to 20% of cases. We report many locations which has posed problems of therapeutic choice. It is the case of a 35-year-old housewife, seen in consultation for red colored and squamous patches associated to pruritus and pain. On the skin, the examination found red colored and squamous patches, in projection, shaped rounded with a very slow evolution combining in a variable manner, rashes, scales, crusts and keratosis. Patches tended to grow progressively. The vulvar lesions were pigmented patches. In the mouth, we noted ulcers and a diffuse hypopigmentation with cheilitis, perlèche and odynophagia. The oncology checkup in search of another skin, mucosal and visceral cancer was done without any cancer found and the general condition was retained. The histopathology performed on two biopsies confirmed the diagnosis. Considering the spread of lesions and after a pretreatment evaluation, we put the patient under 5fluorouracil in cream on evening and under isotretinoin capsule with favorable evolution in the third week. The multiple sites of MB are rare but pose a management problem because of the evolutionary potential of each individual lesion in squamous cell carcinoma. The choice of treatment depends on the general condition of the patient, the expected efficacy of the treatment but also on its tolerance and cost. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A 79-year-old Japanese woman presented with an ulcerated, brown-red nodule in the center of a sharply demarcated, tan-brown plaque situated on the left side of her right breast. Histologically, the plaque demonstrated an acanthosis with an intraepidermal epithelioma of Borst-Jadassohn. Small oval nests of bland-appearing basophilic cells in the periphery gradually enlarged into nests of various sizes and irregular shapes, composed of densely cohesive, atypical basophilic cells above the central nodule. The atypical keratinocytes shifted to atypical spindle cells beneath the acanthotic epidermis, penetrating deep into the subcutaneous tissue. In addition to vimentin and p63, the spindle cells were positive for several cytokeratin ( CK) markers, including AE1/ AE3, 34βE12 and CK5/6, which showed more intense signals closer to the epidermis. Basophilic cells in the clonal nests were positive for p63, AE1/ AE3, 34βE12 and CK5/6. The MIB-1 index was estimated at approximately 40-50% in both the bland-appearing and the atypical basophilic cells. We describe the first case of spindle cell squamous cell carcinoma arising in an intraepidermal epithelioma expressed by clonal Bowen's disease, which was difficult to differentiate from clonal seborrheic keratosis. Hepatitis C virus is one of the emerging infectious diseases that can be transmitted through blood-to-blood contact. This study was carried out to determine the prevalence of anti-HCV antibodies among potential blood donors and pregnant women attending Bowen University Teaching Hospital (BUTH), Ogbomoso, Oyo State. This hospital-based study was conducted from December 2014 to September 2015. The study group (N = 279) included potential blood donors and pregnant women. Data on socio-demographic characteristics and potential risk factors were collected using a structured questionnaire. The presence of anti-HCV antibodies in serum samples of the studied subjects were detected using third-generation Enzyme Linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA) (WKEA Med Supplies Corp, China). Chisquare test was utilized to assess the association between the socio-demographic variables and HCV status. Logistic regression was done to determine the strength of association between risk factors and HCV status. Statistical significance was set at P ˂ 0.05. Overall seroprevalence of hepatitis C virus infection was found to be 1.79% consisting 0.36% of pregnant women and 1.43% of blood donors. None of the socio-demographic characteristics and potential risk factors among the study groups were significantly associated with hepatitis C virus infection. This study found a seroprevalence of anti-HCV antibody to be 1.79%, thus, screening of pregnant women and blood donors for HCV infections with the use of ELISA is recommended because of its important role in detecting the presence of anti-HCV antibody with utmost specificity and sensitivity. Pigmented Bowen’s disease (pBD) is an uncommon in situ squamous cell carcinoma of the skin usually presenting as a dark scaly plaque involving chronically exposed sites, which is not uncommonly mistaken for other similar pigmented lesions, such as melanoma, pigmented basal cell carcinoma or seborrheic keratosis [1,2]. Dermoscopy has been proven to improve its diagnosis by showing several findings, i.e., gray/brownish dots in linear arrangement, scales, coiled vessels, focal/multifocal amorphous hypopigmentation and bluish structureless areas [1,2]. However, pBD may sometimes display dermoscopic features which are typical of other pigmented lesions, thus making its recognition quite troublesome despite the use of dermoscopy [1,2]. We report a case of pBD with a “starburst” pattern, discussing its dermoscopic differential diagnosis.

The recent scholarly focus on Elizabeth Bowen’s modernism tends to reinforce a false dichotomy between Bowen as an Ascendancy Big House novelist and Bowen as a literary modernist. In keeping with Jameson’s argument that the colonial experience is at the root of Western modernism, I propose that her representations of Anglo-Irish Big House culture, in The Last September in particular, are in fact focal points for understanding Bowen as a modernist, and I argue that the Gothic, with its unavoidable political and colonial resonances, is fundamental to Bowen’s Irish modernism.

Critics have often described The Death of the Heart as a Bildungsroman centred on the character of Portia, in her progress towards maturity. If such a vision is undoubtedly valid, this article attempts to show that the novel can be better comprehended by placing Anna alongside Portia. Thus, the centre of the plot is not simply the young heroine but the tension between the two antagonistic characters. Such a shift also affects the perception of the temporal structure of the novel — the linear narrative appears to be interspersed with gaps opening onto previous moments, revealing that Portia’s present experience is a mere repetition of the past. Time takes the shape of a circle mapped out in the space of the action by the characters’ walks through Regent’s Park, which make them draw temporal loops. The re-surfacing of the past bridges shallow differences and reveals the meaning of the story, which lies in the ambiguities of the text itself.

The article presents a 2016 study on the integration of psychotherapy theory, research, and practice. Results show that experiential avoidance partially mediated avoidant attachment - emotional cut-off, and anxious attachment - I-position, relationships, and that both attachment types were linked to higher levels of triangulation, and fully mediated triangulation - differentiation of self (DOS) relationships. Also noted is the derivation of dyadic relationships from triadic family processes.

Psychology. Religion - Abstract
In addition, the Bowen approach is addressed from the Islamic perspective, and a case sample has been presented related to the intervention methods that can be used in this situation., Son yıllarda maneviyat konusunun psikolojik danışma ve rehberlik alanında yoğun bir şekilde ele alındığı göze çarpmaktadır.

- Abstract
In this paper the land surface model embedded in the PALM model system is described and evaluated against in situ measurements at Cabauw, Netherlands. A total of 2 consecutive clear-sky days are simulated, and the components of surface energy balance, potential temperature, humidity, and horizontal wind speed are compared to observations. For the simulated period, components of the energy balance are consistent with daytime and nighttime observations, and the daytime Bowen ratio also agrees fairly well with observations. The model simulates a more stably stratified nocturnal boundary layer than the observations, and near-surface potential temperature and humidity agree fairly well during the day. Moreover, a sensitivity analysis is performed to investigate dependence of the model on land surface and soil specifications, as well as atmospheric initial conditions, because they represent a major source of uncertainty in the simulation setup. It is found that an inaccurate estimation of leaf area index, albedo, or initial humidity causes a significant misrepresentation of the daytime turbulent sensible and latent heat fluxes. During the night, the boundary-layer characteristics are primarily affected by surface roughness and the applied radiation schemes.

- Abstract

Differentiation of self (Bowen) postulates that relationship pattern of family of origin affects one's ability to initiate and maintain relationships later in life. The present study aims to study relationship between Differentiation of Self and Marital Adjustment in Indian couples. 52 Indian couples (N=104) completed Differentiation of Self Inventory (Short form) & Comprehensive Marital Adjustment Inventory. The results indicated significant positive correlation (r= .33, p< .05) between differentiation of self and marital adjustment of Indian couples. However, it was also found that only 16.9% of variance in Marital adjustment attributed to differentiation of self and its four subcomponents. The study summarised role of other factors along with differentiation of self to understand marital adjustment in Indian couples. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

ESPIONAGE ,NARRATIVES ,DEFECTION - Abstract
Set during the midst of the London Blitz, Elizabeth Bowen's The Heat of the Day revolves around a narrative of espionage, but unlike many novels from the spy genre, it refuses to disclose all of its secrets. Instead, the novel's dense and complex language, which so effectively expresses the dislocating effects of a city under attack, resists an easy or uncomplicated reading. This article examines the motif of reading within the novel, which manifests when its protagonist, Stella Rodney, learns her lover Robert is a Nazi spy. In her efforts to locate proof of his defection, Stella becomes caught in a recurrent but indeterminable task of rereading past events, a movement which attempts to remember the past but also foregrounds a fundamental inability to ever wholly resolve its enigmas. When Stella fails to read her past for lost clues, she is prevented from viewing the events of her life as a coherent and meaningful narrative. The novel's difficult language reflects this lack of resolution, refusing to assimilate the events it depicts into a straightforward account. With its wartime setting as a disorienting backdrop, The Heat of the Day undermines the purpose of reading as the discovery of sense and meaning, producing instead only more questions and mysteries. EVAPORATION (Meteorology) , *PLANT transpiration , *ARID regions , *DESERTS , *PLANT canopies , *SAND dunes - Abstract
Nitraria , a widely growing shrub plant in the dry desert area of China, can fix moving sand along its canopy and form a large number of sand dunes. The Nitraria dune is one of the most effective ways to fix moving sand and protect oasis in Northwest China. However, after dune formation, Nitraria plants gradually die and then release the fixed sand which causes damage to the oasis again. A decrease in the ratio of transpiration ( T ) to evapotranspiration ( ET ) was assumed to be the main reason for Nitraria dune degradation because more water was used for soil evaporation, however, this assumption has remained untested because of the difficulty in measuring the Nitraria dune transpiration rate. To overcome this challenge, an intensive field experiment was carried out in 2008–2012 in the Minqin, a typical desert-oasis region in Northwest China. Four measurement sites (early growth stage, rapid growth stage, peak growth stage, and senescence stage) represent the different succession stages of a Nitraria dune. Meteorological parameters were measured by Bowen ratio system, vegetation features and soil physical properties were measured by conventional methods, soil evaporation and transpiration by thermal remote sensing and three-temperature model (3T model), soil moisture by gravimetric and neutron probe method, and evapotranspiration ( ET ) by Bowen ratio energy balance and water balance methods. Results showed that in a wet year (2008), annual ET was 121, 108, 114, and 126 mm, for the four stages, respectively. The ratio of ET to precipitation ( P ) was 103, 92, 97, and 107%, respectively. In a dry year (2010), ET was 75, 89, 79, and 79 mm, respectively, while the ET / P was 106, 126, 112, and 112%, respectively. ET accounted for 92–107% of the precipitation in the wet years and 106–126% in the dry years. ET was nearly equal to precipitation in the wet years and greater than precipitation in the dry years, indicating almost all water from precipitation evaporated in all sites. Our results also showed that vegetation coverage in the four stages was 0.15, 0.35, 0.74, and 0.23, respectively. Instantaneous value of T was 0.021, 0.014, 0.033, and 0.003 mm h −1 , respectively for the four stages. Instantaneous value of soil evaporation ( E ) was 0.054, 0.013, 0.004, and 0.009 mm h −1 , respectively. The corresponding ET was 0.075, 0.027, 0.037, and 0.012 mm h −1 for the four stages, respectively. The ratio of T / ET was 0.28, 0.52, 0.89, and 0.25, respectively for the four stages. The ratio reached to its maximum value of 0.89 and then began to decrease, which clearly proved our hypothesis. It concluded that the Nitraria plant not only consumes all the rainfall in the growing season, but also some of the water stored in the soil, which gradually consumes all the soil water storage and finally causes the Nitraria plant death. It also concluded that increasing T , decreasing E and keeping a high T / ET ratio is crucial for desert plants to survive. These results show that the above hypothesis is true and it will be useful for vegetation rehabilitation in the desert area. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Differentiation of self is defined at the interpersonal level as the ability to achieve emotional autonomy from the family of origin while maintaining a degree of connectedness and at the intrapsychic level as the capacity to distinguish thoughts from feelings (Kerr and Bowen () Family evaluation. W. W. Norton and Company, New York). Research indicates that differentiation of self is positively related to well-being (Skowron et al. () Contemp Fam Ther 31:3-18. doi:; Murdock and Gore () Contemp Fam Ther 26(3):319-335. doi:), and that cultural forces of individualism and collectivism may affect this relationship (Chung and Gale () Contemp Fam Ther 28:367-381. doi:). However, no previous studies have looked at the impact of self-construal, or how one views the self in relation to others, on the relationship between differentiation of self and well-being at the individual level. The purpose of this study was to determine if self-construal moderates the relationship between differentiation of self and well-being among US college students, with a focus on within-culture variation. The results indicated that differentiation of self is positively correlated with independent self-construal and negatively correlated with interdependent self-construal. In addition, independent self-construal moderates the relationship between differentiation of self and well-being such that high levels of independent self-construal serve as a buffer to psychological symptoms for those with low levels of differentiation of self. We also found that fusion and emotional reactivity, aspects of differentiation of self, mediate the relationship between interdependent self-construal and well-being. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Many systems approaches speak to the importance of respectful mutual curiosity in supervision rather than linear teacher-learner didacticism. This paper provides an overview of collaborative approaches to supervision in family therapy. It then focuses on Bowen family systems and encouraging differentiation in the relationship process between supervisor and supervisee as a useful approach towards equal collaboration. The authors use case examples to illustrate what impedes and fosters mutuality in the supervision process where both supervisor and supervisee learn from each other. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: In three radial models (typical of the Trelinga-1, Overston-1 and Moonie-39 wells) with boundaries placed at different distances, injection rates of 2 million tonnes per annum (Mt/a) cannot be sustained. In larger sector models, (with parameters typical of these three wells) injection of 2Mt/a is sustained in the Precipice Sandstone (Surat Basin), but reduces to 1.2Mt/a in the Showgrounds Sandstone (Bowen Basin). Plume footprints and overpressures range 10- 15km and 35-75bar, respectively. Baffles cause maximum overpressure and CO

In this article, we propose that emotional reactivity can influence dialogue around the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5) and the wider issues included in the debate. We explore this emotional process and the impact that it has on our clinical practice, our clients' experiences, our experience of ourselves as clinicians and the ways we work with other professionals. We begin by presenting clinical scenarios, then briefly summarise key ideas from the DSM-5 debate, and draw on Bowen Family Systems Theory to explore a number of ways that emotional reactivity to these ideas can manifest itself in multidisciplinary and collegial relationships. We conclude that it is helpful to increase awareness of our own emotional processes to best avoid becoming reactive to, or dismissive of, alternative paradigms or knowledge bases that may be of use to our clients. We describe a number of principles and ideas that we have found useful in this context and identify ongoing dilemmas in our practice. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

AUTHORSHIP , *MODERNISM (Literature) - Abstract
Bowen's writing is well recognised for its preoccupation with the cinema, and its cinematic techniques, leading recent criticism to align her writing with the experimentations and innovations of literary modernism. As a result Bowen's cinema writing has been read after modernism, and, in particular, after Virginia Woolf. Through a close reading of Bowen's critically neglected 1929 cinema short story ‘Dead Mabelle’, however, I show how Bowen is not simply writing in the wake of Woolf's cinema aesthetics, but in dialogue with them. Although similarly preoccupied with the cinema affects - or emotion pictures- that fund Woolf's writing, Bowen's story highlights the philosophic blind spots on which these aesthetics turn. Rather than agree with modernist aesthetics, 'Dead Mabelle' offers a critical counterpoint to modernist writing about the cinema that deconstructs the very discourses with which her work has been aligned. MODERNISM (Literature) , *FICTION , *RADIO programs - Abstract
Elizabeth Bowen, at the invitation of BBC Radio producers, broadcast talks, features, and short dramatic pieces from the 1940s through the 1960s. Her broadcasting caused her to rethink the relation of sound to information and meaning. Radio thus had a defining influence on her writing of fiction, especially The Little Girls, which is implicated in a complex sound world. Like other novels published at mid-century, this novel emphasizes the acoustic aspects of modernism, particularly the possibilities of overlapping, repetitive, and misheard sounds. Bowen pays particular attention to dialogue and verbal style, where noise confronts language and sound confronts meaning. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

IMPERIALISM in literature , *IDEOLOGY ,BRITISH colonies - Abstract
Anglophone women experienced modernism as a negotiation of an interrelated set of ideologies, including that of the imperial mother. A comparative reading of Elizabeth Bowen's The House in Paris and Jean Rhys's Voyage in the Dark demonstrates ways that Bowen's and Rhys's formal experimentations reveal the impact of colonialism on maternal ideology in the interwar period. Critical assessments of Bowen and Rhys have tended to treat the women's writings separately, but a comparative reading helps to illuminate shared reproductive concerns that characterize women's writings from the margins of the British Empire. Furthermore, this interrogation of gender as it intersects with modernism opens up critical inquiry into a neglected subcategory of sexuality and maternity. This reading argues that Karen and Anna (the respective characters) represent a thwarted maternal identity because colonial strictures have deemed them incapable of fulfilling imperial maternal imperatives. Starting from Bowen's ‘Anglo-Irish’ identity as a mark of the split self, I trace her literary exploration of non-belonging by looking at how her early work, above all in the short story, draws her uncannily close to the neo-gothic problematic of the ghost story. Examining her short fiction in the 1920s and 30s, I argue that Bowen's ghostly writing ultimately reaches towards an encounter with something impossible, a point of radical otherness lying beyond the legible surfaces of ‘belonging’, be they those of nation, class, identity or heterosexual legitimacy. This paper traces the disputes and conflicts between the leading political and scientific personalities involved in the development of the early British radar-based air defence system. The paper demonstrates how these conflicts, coupled with the poor performance of radar in a 1936 demonstration, led to the pursuit of the alternative Silhouette system of night air defence, comprising cloud illumination by upward-facing floodlights, and the consequent delay in expediting the development of a co-ordinated system of precise ground radars and airborne air interception radar to combat German bombers in the night Blitz of 1940-41.
