Abstract

We investigate the effect of polydispersity on the properties of curved linear brushes in good solvent and for molten brushes. To this end, we extend the strong stretching theory for polydisperse brushes to curved geometries and investigate the polymer chain end profiles, bending moduli and other properties for experimentally relevant polymer chain length distributions of the Schulz-Zimm type. We also investigate the properties of End Exclusion Zones (EEZ) that may appear in convex geometries under certain conditions, and show that their position in the brush can be engineered by careful selection of the polymer length distribution. Lastly, we propose a method to engineer chain end profiles by engineering the polymer length distribution.

Abstract

The conformation of a polyelectrolyte (PE) brush grafted to the inner surface of a long cylindrical mesopore was described within analytical Poisson–Boltzmann strong stretching approximation. The internal structure of the PE brush, including brush thickness and radial density profile of monomer units, and radial distribution of electrostatic potential were analyzed as functions of the pore radius, degree of polymerization, and grafting density of the brush-forming PE chains as well as ionic strength of the solution. It is demonstrated that narrowing of the pore leads to a non-monotonous variation of the brush thickness, which passes through a maximum when the brush thickness becomes equal to the pore radius. Variation in the salt concentration triggers conformational transition that leads to the opening or closing of the hollow (PE-free) channel in the pore center that potentially allows controlling of the pore-selective permeability for charged nanocolloidal particles (e.g., globular proteins or viruses). The predictions of the analytical theory were validated by numerical calculations using the Scheutjens–Fleer self-consistent field modeling method. These theoretical findings may be used for the design of highly selective smart mesoporous membranes with PE brush-functionalized pores for, e.g., protein separation and purification. 6. Solutions of Diblock Copolymer Micelles with Bottlebrush Blocks. Scaling Model

Abstract

We present a scaling theory describing equilibrium properties of starlike micelles formed by a diblock copolymer with bottlebrush (bb) blocks in solutions. In dilute and semidilute solutions, the blocks are envisioned as linear chains of impermeable superblobs with sizes DAand DB. Depending on the ratio of block “thicknesses”, DA/DB, micelles can exhibit different power law dependences on solution concentration. We demonstrate that bb branching of blocks increases the number of different regimes in the diagram of states compared with diblock copolymers with linear blocks. In particular, in concentrated solution, thickness DAof soluble block A decreases and micelles rearrange similarly to spherical domains in melts of diblock copolymer with the concentration-dependent size of the monomer unit in the corona block. In both the semidilute and concentrated solutions, starlike micelles remain essentially impermeable and exhibit quasi-globular regimes. The theoretical predictions are contrasted to experiments.

Abstract

We propose the quantitative mean-field theory of mechanical unfolding of a globule formed by long flexible homopolymer chain collapsed in poor solvent and subjected to an extensional force We show that with an increase in the applied force the globule unfolds as a whole without formation of an intermediate state. The value of the threshold force and the corresponding jump in the distance between chain ends increase with a deterioration of the solvent quality and / or with an increase in the degree of polymerization. Abstract

We consider conformations and intra-molecular conformational transitions in amphiphilic starlike polymers formed by diblock copolymer arms with inner hydrophobic and outer polyelectrolyte blocks. A combination of an analytical mean-field theory with the assumption-free numerical self-consistent field (SCF) modeling approach is applied. It is demonstrated that unimolecular micelles with collapsed hydrophobic cores and swollen polyelectrolyte coronae are formed in dilute aqueous solutions at high ionic strength or/and low degree of ionization of the outer hydrophilic block. An intra-molecular conformational transition related to the unfolding of the hydrophobic core of the unimolecular micelles can be triggered by a decrease in the ionic strength of the solution or/and increase in the degree of ionization of the coronal blocks. In the stars with large number of diblock copolymer arms the transition between conformations with collapsed or stretched core-forming blocks occurs continuously by progressive unfolding of the core domain. By contrast, in the stars with relatively small number of arms the continuous unfolding of the core is interrupted by an abrupt unravelling transition. A detailed SCF analysis indicates that under both unfolding scenario the arms of the star are extended fairly equally, i.e., no intra-molecular disproportionation occurs., Comment: 36 pages, 15 figures

Abstract

We present results of numerical self-consistent field (SCF) calculations for the equilibrium mechanical unfolding of a globule formed by a single flexible polymer chain collapsed in a poor solvent. In accordance with earlier scaling theory and stochastic dynamics simulations findings we have identified three regimes of extensional deformation: (i) a linear response regime characterized by a weakly elongated (ellipsoidal) shape of the globule at small deformations, (ii) a tadpole structure with a globular "head" coexisting with a stretched "tail" at intermediate ranges of deformations, and (iii) an uniformly stretched chain at strong extensions. The conformational transition from the tadpole to the stretched chain is accompanied by an abrupt unfolding of the depleted globular head and a corresponding jump-wise drop in the intrachain tension. The unfolding-refolding cycle demonstrates a hysteresis loop in the vicinity of the transition point. These three regimes of deformation, as well as the first-order like transition between the tadpole and the stretched chain conformations, can be experimentally observable provided that the number of monomer units in the chain is large and/or the solvent quality is sufficiently poor. For short chains, on the other hand, under moderately poor solvent strength conditions, the unfolding transition is continuous. Upon an increase in the imposed end-to-end distance the extended globule retains a longitudinally uniform shape at any degree of deformation. In all cases the system exhibits a negative extensional modulus in the intermediate range of deformations. Abstract

In this article, we used the numerical self-consistent field method of Scheutjens–Fleer to study the micellization of hybrid molecules consisting of one polylysine dendron with charged end groups and several linear hydrophobic tails attached to its root. The main attention was paid to spherical micelles and the determination of the range of parameters at which they can appear. A relationship has been established between the size and internal structure of the resulting spherical micelles and the length and number of hydrophobic tails, as well as the number of dendron generations. It is shown that the splitting of the same number of hydrophobic monomers from one long tail into several short tails leads to a decrease in the aggregation number and, accordingly, the number of terminal charges in micelles. At the same time, it was shown that the surface area per dendron does not depend on the number of hydrophobic monomers or tails in the hybrid molecule. The relationship between the structure of hybrid molecules and the electrostatic properties of the resulting micelles has also been studied. It is found that the charge distribution in the corona depends on the number of dendron generations G in the hybrid molecule. For a small number of generations (up to (Formula presented.)), a standard double electric layer is observed. For a larger number of generations ((Formula presented.)), the charges of dendrons in the corona are divided into two populations: in the first population, the charges are in the spherical layer near the boundary between the micelle core and shell, and in the second population, the charges are near the periphery of the spherical shell. As a result, a part of the counterions is localized in the wide region between them. These results are of potential interest for the use of spherical dendromicelles as nanocontainers for drug delivery.

Abstract

Purpose: To replicate previous genome-wide association study identified sprint-related polymorphisms in 3 different cohorts of top-level sprinters and to further validate the obtained results in functional studies. Methods: A total of 240 Japanese, 290 Russians, and 593 Brazilians were evaluated in a case-control approach. Of these, 267 were top-level sprint/power athletes. In addition, the relationship between selected polymorphisms and muscle fiber composition was evaluated in 203 Japanese and 287 Finnish individuals. Results: The G allele of the rs3213537 polymorphism was overrepresented in Japanese (odds ratio [OR]: 2.07, P =.024) and Russian (OR: 1.93, P =.027) sprinters compared with endurance athletes and was associated with an increased proportion of fast-twitch muscle fibers in Japanese (P =.02) and Finnish (P =.041) individuals. A meta-analysis of the data from 4 athlete cohorts confirmed that the presence of the G/G genotype rather than the G/A+A/A genotypes increased the OR of being a sprinter compared with controls (OR: 1.49, P =.01), endurance athletes (OR: 1.79, P =.001), or controls + endurance athletes (OR: 1.58, P =.002). Furthermore, male sprinters with the G/G genotype were found to have significantly faster personal times in the 100-m dash than those with G/A+A/A genotypes (10.50 [0.26] vs 10.76 [0.31], P =.014). Conclusion: The rs3213537 polymorphism found in the CPNE5 gene was identified as a highly replicable variant associated with sprinting ability and the increased proportion of fast-twitch muscle fibers, in which the homozygous genotype for the major allele (ie, the G/G genotype) is preferable for performance. Abstract

Using a combination of self-consistent field theory with coarse-grained Brownian dynamics simulations, we studied mechanical unfolding of an amphiphilic molecular brush in a solvent that was poor for the side chains but good for the main chain of the brush. In striking contrast to earlier theoretical predictions [O. V. Borisov and A. Halperin, Europhys. Lett. 34, 657 (1996)] made for amphiphilic graft copolymers, we discovered that in a partially unfolded molecular brush, a globular core co-exists, at equilibrium, with a necklace of smaller sized intra-molecular micelles, each comprising a few side chains connected by stretched main chain strands (bridges). A progressive increase in the main chain end-to-end distance of the brush triggers a sequence of discrete events of generation of new intramolecular micelles, giving rise to a sawtooth pattern in the restoring force–deformation curve. Abstract

Brushes formed by arm-tethered starlike polyelectrolytes may exhibit internal segregation into weakly and strongly extended populations (stratified two-layer structure) when strong ionic intermolecular repulsions induce stretching of the tethers up to the limit of their extensibility. We propose an approximate Poisson-Boltzmann theory for analysis of the structure of the stratified brush and compare it with results of numerical self-consistent field modeling. Both analytical and numerical models point to the formation of a narrow cloud of counterions (internal double electrical layer) localized inside a stratified brush at the boundary between the layers. So far, more than 200 DNA polymorphisms associated with strength/power phenotypes have been identified majorly involving nonathletic populations. The aim of the present study was to investigate individually and in combination the association of 217 DNA polymorphisms previously identified as markers for strength/power phenotypes with elite strength athlete status. A case-control study involved 83 Russian professional strength athletes (53 weightlifters, 30 powerlifters), 209 Russian and 503 European controls. Genotyping was conducted using micro-array analysis. Twenty-eight DNA polymorphisms (located near or in ABHD17C, ACTG1, ADCY3, ADPGK, ANGPT2, ARPP21, BCDIN3D, CRTAC1, DHODH, GBE1, IGF1, IL6, ITPR1, KIF1B, LRPPRC, MMS22L, MTHFR, NPIPB6, PHACTR1, PLEKHB1, PPARG, PPARGC1A, R3HDM1, RASGRF1, RMC1, SLC39A8, TFAP2D, ZKSCAN5 genes) were identified to have an association with strength athlete status. Next, to assess the combined impact of all 28 DNA polymorphisms, all athletes were classified according to the number of "strength" alleles they possessed. All highly elite strength athletes were carriers of at least 22 (up to 34) "strength" alleles, whereas 27.8% of Russian controls had less than 22 "strength" alleles (p < 0.0001). The proportion of subjects with a high (≥26) number of "strength" alleles was significantly greater in highly elite strength athletes (84.8%) compared with less successful strength athletes (64.9%; odd ratio [OR] = 3.0, p = 0.042), Russian (26.3%; OR = 15.6, p < 0.0001) or European (37.8%; OR = 6.4, p < 0.0001) controls.
