Excessive anthropogenic activities affect landscape patterns and trigger a decrease in natural capital and the quality of life. Green infrastructures (GIs) are commonly accepted by scholars as solutions for restoring degraded areas and providing a variety of ecosystem services (ESs). On the other hand, the capacity to deliver ESs can be assumed as a relevant starting point for GIs analysis and planning. The assessment of ESs needs extensive investigation and applications to provide planners, policymakers, and institutional stakeholders with an adequate evaluation tool. The multifaceted nature of ES assessment implies the use of complex tools able to consider many concerns. In this regard, multicriteria analysis (MCA) is a very popular tool due to its capacity to intertwine a variety of issues rigorously and to support participatory and transparent decision-making in the public domain. In this study, we aim to contribute to the integration of GI design into spatial planning, starting with the assessment of the net benefit delivered to local society by a GI in the metropolitan area of Bordeaux (France). We assessed the net benefit by confronting the ESs deliverable by the GI and the cost sustained for its construction and maintenance. We applied an MCA-based method to the selection of the most efficient alternative out of three GI paths. We demonstrate that our method is useful for the assessment of cultural and regulating ESs, comparing the GI design alternatives, and considering the preference model of the stakeholders within GI planning and design. Consumers, businesses and organisations rely on others' ratings of items when making choices. However, individual reviewers vary in their accuracy and some are biased—either systematically over- or under-rating items relative to others' tastes, or even deliberately distorting a rating. We describe how to process ratings by a group of reviewers over a set of items and evaluate the individual reviewers' accuracies and biases, in a way that yields unbiased and consistent estimates of the items' true qualities. We provide Monte Carlo simulations that showcase the added value of our technique even with small data sets, and we show that this improvement increases as the number of items increases. Revisiting the famous 1976 wine tasting that compared Californian and Bordeaux wines, accounting for the substantial variation in reviewers' biases and accuracies results in a ranking that differs from the original average rating. We also illustrate the power of this methodology with an application to more than 45,000 ratings of ' en primeur ' Bordeaux fine wines by expert critics. Those data show that our estimated wine qualities significantly predict prices when controlling for prominent experts' ratings and numerous fixed effects. The paper defines 'cluster identity' as an intangible attribute of clusters comprised of place branding and trademarking by cluster organizations, respectively anchored in a 'logic of belonging' and a 'logic of similarity'. We expand the taxonomy of proximities and their dynamics according to their belonging/similarity logic and their tangible/intangible nature. As illustrated in the context of the Bordeaux wine region of France, we find that a prevailing logic of belonging leads to reputational inertia. We propose that trademarking by cluster organizations can facilitate the adaptation of cluster identity, thereby emphasizing its potential as an instrument for cluster managers to engage in community-building. The World Trade Organization (WTO) protects geographical indication (GI) wines such as Bordeaux and Chianti. However, there is scant empirical evidence on the effectiveness of this protection. Our triple difference panel data analysis of EU wine exports from 1995 to 2019 finds a significant effect. When countries join the WTO, their import of GI wines increases by about 25% more than non‐GI wines, compared to non‐joiners. Our findings suggest that specific trade provisions matter and that the EU policy of also including wine GIs in bilateral agreements is an attempt to further improve enforcement of GI protection in third countries. Climate change modifies the base climate of the wine regions and, with it, the structure of their traditional types of wine production, imposing measures to adapt, mitigate, or capitalize on the newly emerging conditions. In order to assess the impact of climate change and establish the appropriate adaptation measures for each wine region, regional and local studies are needed, which allow knowledge of their current climate profile. The aim of this research was to identify the changes that appeared as an effect of climate change in the initial climate profile and the initial structure of the traditional types of wine production of Bordeaux (France), Loire Valley (France), Rhine-Main-Nahe (Germany), La Rioja (Spain) and Cotnari (Romania) wine regions, and also in climate suitability for wine production of the Sussex area from the UK. The study uses multi-year averages for the 1951–1990 and 1991–2010 time periods of reference bioclimatic indices for viticulture, namely the Average Temperature of the Growing Season (AvGST), the Huglin Index (HI), and the Oenoclimatic Aptitude Index (IAOe). The results of this research reveal significant changes in climate suitability for wine production of the studied wine regions: in the Bordeaux wine region, climate change led to the appearance of conditions for the cultivation of the Mediterranean climate varieties Grenache, Syrah, and Carignan; in the cool climate wine regions Rhine-Main-Nahe and Cotnari, traditional producers of white wines, the climate has also become suitable for the cultivation of Pinot noir and Cabernet franc varieties, and implicitly for the production of red wines; in all studied wine regions, the classes of climate suitability for viticulture shifted higher in altitude, as is the case of the La Rioja region, where, in the recent period, the grapevine can be grown up to 922.9 m asl, higher by 206.2 m compared to the 1951–1990 time period; in the low area of each wine region, one or even two new climate suitability classes for wine grape growing appeared. The shifts revealed by this research generate solid conclusions regarding the effect of climatic change on the viticultural potential of geographical areas, namely: in the context of climate change, the altitude of the wine region has a major influence on the evolution of the local viticulture potential; a higher topography allows a better adaptation of the wine region to climate change; low-elevation wine regions are more vulnerable to climate changes, especially the further south they are located; as an effect of climate change, conditions appear in the wine regions for the cultivation of new grapevine varieties and the production of new types of wine. This article presents a literature review and a bibliometric analysis of academic research on wine prices in economics. The study comprises a review of 180 articles published in journals between 1992 and 2022. Bibliometric and science mapping methods apply indicators identifying the most prominent journals, authors, countries, institutions, topics, most published and cited articles, co‐authorship, bibliographic coupling, cited references, and keywords. This approach highlights the importance of four clusters in the literature: determinants of the wine prices, demand and consumption of wine, fine wine as an alternative investment, and quality and brand reputation of Bordeaux wines. Connecting chemical properties to various wine characteristics is of great interest to the science of olfaction as well as the wine industry. We explored whether Bordeaux wine chemical identities and vintages (harvest year) can be inferred from a common and affordable chemical analysis, namely, a combination of gas chromatography (GC) and electron ionization mass spectrometry. Using 12 vintages (within the 1990–2007 range) from 7 estates of the Bordeaux region, we report that, remarkably, nonlinear dimensionality reduction techniques applied to raw gas chromatograms recover the geography of the Bordeaux region. Using machine learning, we found that we can not only recover the estate perfectly from gas chromatograms, but also the vintage with up to 50% accuracy. Interestingly, we observed that the entire chromatogram is informative with respect to geographic location and age, thus suggesting that the chemical identity of a wine is not defined by just a few molecules but is distributed over a large chemical spectrum. This study demonstrates the remarkable potential of GC analysis to explore fundamental questions about the origin and age of wine. Gas chromatography is a useful tool to identify and characterize wines, usually by selecting some compounds for a particular classification problem, yet, with limited success. By analyzing more than 1,400 expert tasting notes, we assess the so-called gender profile of Bordeaux wines. We identify 329 gender-related wine descriptors, with a good balance between masculine and feminine descriptors. Some wines and vintages are described as more feminine than others, but no clear trend over time emerges. Our regression analysis further reveals that more feminine wines receive similar ratings and sell at similar prices as their more masculine counterparts, but they are perceived as having a much more limited aging potential. This study investigates the impact of both economic policy uncertainty (EPU) and business cycles on the fine wine market. We use a nonlinear autoregressive distributed lag model to measure the influence of these two variables on three major Liv-ex indices over the period 2005M01–2020M12. Our results are multiple. First, fine wine prices are relatively unaffected asymmetrically by EPU, while the economic cycle has a more pronounced asymmetric effect, especially in the short run. Second, uncertainty in Europe and the USA affect fine wine prices more than in China. Third, in the short term, fine wine prices react more strongly to changes in business cycles than to uncertainty. Finally, prices of the five first growths of Bordeaux are asymmetrically influenced by EPU, unlike of the rest of the most prestigious Bordeaux wines. The study also has implications for investment. We argue that a strong and professional strategic intelligence watch would help stakeholders in the secondary wine market to improve their returns, especially when European and US wines are involved. While short-runners should focus on information relative to changes in the business cycle, long-term investors would find it more interesting to closely monitor policy decisions liable to have long-term effects on wine prices (such as taxation, monetary measures...). Nowadays, the development of naturalness as a concept is illustrated in the oenological field by the development of wine produced with lower inputs, sometimes even without any addition of SO2 throughout the winemaking process, up to the bottling stage. Despite the increase in the offer of these wines, they remain poorly explored in the literature and require characterization. This study was developed to evaluate the color of Bordeaux red wines without SO2 addition using colorimetric and polymeric pigments analysis. From a batch of commercial Bordeaux red wines with and without SO2 addition, and experimental wines produced from homogenous grapes according to different winemaking processes, colorimetric analyses (CIELab and color intensity (CI)) revealed a large difference in wine color depending on the presence or absence of SO2. Indeed, wines without SO2 were significantly darker and presented with a deeper purplish color. According to these observations, polymeric pigments were quantified using UPLC-DAD/ESI QTof, and a higher concentration of polymeric pigments bound by the ethylidene bridge was observed in wines without SO2. This correlated with differences observed for CIELab and CI. Finally, a comparison with polymeric tannins bound by ethylidene bridge was made and revealed that no differences were observed between wines with and without added SO2. The earliest archaeological evidence of wine making in Southern France is dated 425 bce. Viticulture was present along the Mediterranean coast of France when the Romans arrived (second century bce) and flourished everywhere by the time they left (fifth century ce). For several centuries, long-distance trade virtually disappeared and the infrastructure fell apart. Profitable viticulture remained mostly local and was concentrated in the hands of the wealthy nobility and the Church. After the turn of the first Millennium, towns became cities and a middle-class emerged. In the twelfth century, the wine trade with England gained importance. Wines were shipped from Rouen, Nantes, La Rochelle, and later Bordeaux. Monastic orders controlled the most fertile land, especially in Champagne and Burgundy. In the thirteenth century, the Languedoc became a part of France. During the Avignon papacy, new vineyards were planted, in particular Châteauneuf-du-Pape. After the Renaissance, scientific studies gradually improved viticulture and wine-making. Ultimately, fermentation was understood. The Dutch greatly expanded the wine trade. Then, the first intentionally bubbly wines, distilled wines, and noble-rot wines were made. Informal rankings of Bordeaux wines led to the famous 1855 classification. In the late nineteenth century, nature-made catastrophes, especially phylloxera, transformed France into the largest wine-importing country in the world. Sub-standard and blended wines became common, hurting the reputation of all French wines. The two world wars, the Great Depression and Prohibition shrunk the market for wines. The winemaking technique of saignée is common for some varietals, and the ensuing flavor profiles have been carefully analyzed by oenologists. However, we argue that saignée is fundamentally about economic tradeoffs between the quantity of primary wine that is ultimately produced, the quality (and thus, price) of that wine, and the amount of rosé wine that is bled off in the process. We develop the first theoretically-grounded economic model of saignée and analyze the model to shed light on the winemaker's optimal choice of saignée, and on the properties of wine and wine markets that should empirically give rise to more, or less, saignée. The model helps to explain several real-world regularities such as the absence of saignée for most Bordeaux wines, the specialization in rosé for many wines in Provence, and the practice of moderate amounts of saignée for varietals such as grenache and pinot noir. Wineinformatics is among the new fields in data science that use wine as domain knowledge. To process large amounts of wine review data in human language format, the computational wine wheel is applied. In previous research, the computational wine wheel was created and applied to different datasets of wine reviews developed by Wine Spectator. The goal of this research is to explore the development and application of the computational wine wheel to reviews from a different reviewer, Robert Parker. For comparison, this research collects 513 elite Bordeaux wines that were reviewed by both Robert Parker and Wine Spectator. The full power of the computational wine wheel is utilized, including NORMALIZED, CATEGORY, and SUBCATEGORY attributes. The datasets are then used to predict whether the wine is a classic wine (95 + scores) or not (94 − scores) using the black-box classification algorithm support vector machine. The Wine Spectator's dataset, with a combination of NORMALIZED, CATEGORY, and SUBCATEGORY attributes, achieves the best accuracy of 76.02%. Robert Parker's dataset also achieves an accuracy of 75.63% out of all the attribute combinations, which demonstrates the usefulness of the computational wine wheel and that it can be effectively adopted in different wine reviewers' systems. This paper models optimal release prices of an experience good recurrently issued on markets. Using a sample of Bordeaux wines, we find that using a minimal number of intrinsic and extrinsic attributes is sufficient to explain a large proportion of release prices. We further observe a significant relationship between primary market prices and secondary market prices and general economic conditions. Release prices can deviate from secondary market prices in the short run but remain aligned over the long run. Finally, an out‐of‐sample analysis indicates that short‐run mispricing directly affects the purchase behavior of customers. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Wineinformatics is a new and emerging data science that uses wine as domain knowledge and integrates data systems and wine-related data sets. Wine reviews fromWine Spectator usually include the aging information, at the end of the review, in the form of "Best from YearA through YearB"; with the vintage of the wine included, the suggested holding year (YearA--vintage), shelflife (YearB--vintage) and aging capacity (YearB--YearA) can be calculated and provide crucial information in the study of wineinformatics. The goal of this paper is to test whether wine reviews describing olfactory and gustatory information reveal wines' suggested holding-year information. Wine reviews from Wine Spectator are extracted and processed by a natural language processing tool named the ComputationalWine Wheel for categorizing and mapping various wine terminologies from wine reviews into a consolidated set of descriptors. The suggested aging capability is also calculated from the review and served as a label for classification problems. The study uses different learning algorithms, analyzing their performances and using the best-performing algorithm(s) to build a model for the prediction of a wine's aging properties. The results of the study suggest that both support vector machine (SVM) and the K-nearest neighbor (KNN) algorithms achieved more than 70% accuracy.
