This paper presents the quantitative imaging datasets collected during the Tara Pacific Expedition (2016–2018) on the schooner Tara. The datasets cover a wide range of plankton sizes, from micro-phytoplankton > 20 μm to meso-zooplankton of a few cm, as well as non-living particles such as plastic and detrital particles. It consists of surface samples collected across the North and South Pacific Ocean from open ocean stations (a total of 357 samples) and from stations located in coastal waters, lagoons or reefs of 32 Pacific islands (a total of 228 samples). As this expedition involved long distances and long sailing times, we designed two sampling systems to collect plankton while sailing at speeds up to 9 knots. To sample microplankton, surface water was pumped onboard using a customised pumping system and filtered through a 20 µm mesh size plankton net (here after Deck-Net (DN). A High Speed Net (HSN; 330 μm mesh size) was developed to sample the mesoplankton. In addition, a Manta net (330 µm) was also used when possible, to collect mesoplankton and plastics simultaneously. We could not deploy these nets in reef and lagoon stations of islands. Instead, two Bongo nets (20 µm) attached to an underwater scooter were used to sample microplankton. Microplankton (20–200 μm) from the DN and Bongo nets was imaged directly on-board Tara using the FlowCam (Fluid imaging, Inc.) while the mesoplankton (> 200 μm) from the HSN and Manta nets was analyzed in the laboratory with the ZooScan system. Organisms and other particles were taxonomically and morphologically classified using the web application EcoTaxa automatic sorting tools, followed by taxonomic expert validation or correction. More than 300 different taxonomic and morphological groups were identified. The datasets include the metadata with the raw data from which morphological traits such as size (ESD) and biovolume have been calculated for each particle, as well as a number of quantitative descriptors of the surface plankton communities. These include abundance, biovolumes, Shannon diversity index and normalised biovolume size spectra, allowing the study of their structures (e.g. taxonomic, functional, size structure, trophic structure, etc.) according to a wide range of environmental parameters at the basin scale. In addition to describing and presenting the datasets, the complementary aim of this paper is to investigate and quantify the potential sampling biases associated with the two high speed sampling systems and the different net types, in order to improve further ecological interpretations. Conservation monitoring is paramount for the gathering of information on species and populations in need of conservation actions. However, monitoring of the mountain bongo Tragelaphus eurycerus isaaci , a Critically Endangered antelope endemic to Kenya, has hitherto been limited to surveillance (i.e. focused on persistence of the species in particular areas), thus limiting the information that could be retrieved on the status and trends of these populations. Using a newly developed identification system, we implemented robust design mark–recapture using existing camera-trap records of four wild subpopulations of the bongo. We provide data on sex and age structure and the first estimates of population size in the wild. Males and calves seem to be suffering higher mortality than females, and only two of the four monitored populations include adults of both sexes and calves. The combined size of these two breeding populations is estimated to be 29–50. Our findings confirm the critical situation of the mountain bongo in the wild and highlight the need for conservation actions to reinforce the wild populations for the long-term conservation of this antelope. Many critically endangered species persist in remnant populations so small that ecological information required to assist recovery, such as species-typical demographic parameters and habitat preferences, can be difficult to acquire based on science alone. Traditional ecological knowledge (TEK) or local ecological knowledge (LEK) can fill information gaps and provide additional understanding, though this expertise is not everlasting and often overlooked. We report on research focused on a species survival plan for mountain bongo (Tragelaphus eurycerus isaaci), a critically endangered antelope endemic to Kenya, persisting in the wild with fewer than 80 individuals in four separated montane forests. In preparation for a potential conservation translocation of captive-bred bongos into one or more forests, extensive camera trapping yielded limited results, suggesting that data were based on the activities of just a few individuals. Moreover, additional information critical to translocations, such as typical group size and sex ratios, could neither be observed nor obtained from the literature. This knowledge gap was largely resolved using expert interviews conducted with eight former Kenyan hunters, along with historical range and browse mapping, enriching understanding of behavioral characteristics rendering bongo particularly vulnerable to exploitation. Consistently similar responses from observations spanning a 50-year period (1950s to 1990s) across four ecosystems added certainty to responses. This study endorses a combination of data sources when dealing with remnant populations, and specifically recommends making use of this documented mountain bongo TEK/LEK to inform decisions about potential bongo reintroductions in Kenya. Most likely, the alien snow crab Chionoecetes opilio entered the Kara Sea from the Barents Sea, both due to the migration of adults and with currents at the larval stage. Currently, all bottom stages, including mature individuals and a large number of pelagic larvae, are present in the Kara Sea. However, the origin of larvae has not yet been clarified. The larvae hatched in the Kara Sea should be at an earlier stage of development compared with the larvae arrived here from the Barents Sea due to later development of phytoplankton and, accordingly, later hatching. The larvae of the snow crab Chionoecetes opilio and the spider crab Hyas araneus were collected in the central and southwestern Kara Sea in July–early August 2019 by a Bongo zooplankton net with a diameter of 60 cm. It was established that the larvae were unevenly distributed across the Kara Sea. The most populus region was the border with the Barents Sea in the St. Anna Trough (up to 860 ind./m2), and relatively high concentrations of larvae were recorded in the southwestern part, where their abundance at stations varied from 18 to 302 ind./m2. In the zone of the Ob–Yenisei plume, crab larvae were absent or their abundance was minimal. Using molecular genetic methods, the species identity of 361 larvae (344 C. opilio and 17 H. araneus) was reliably determined, and measurements of a number of morphological structures were made for 401 larvae. Significant differences in size were found at the zoea II stage between C. opilio and H. araneus. In July 2019, in most of the Kara Sea, in zooplankton samples, crab larvae were represented by zoea I of C. opilio with rare specimens of zoea I of H. araneus of the Kara Sea origin. Only in the southwestern part, at the boundary with the Barents Sea, was the presence of zoea II of C. opilio and H. araneus observed in samples with an increased share of the latter species in catches, which probably originated from the Barents Sea. In responding to a question posed by Professor Vincent Carraud regarding a passage in a letter by Etienne Pascal in which he mentions an author who speaks of the mysteries of Pythagorean numbers we have resumed our dossiers on number theory in Mersenne. We have pointed to texts from Mersenne's correspondence, printed books, and unpublished theological manuscripts between 1638 and 1648 in which the mysteries of the Pythagorean numbers are mentioned with reference to the theory of perfect numbers and with reference to Peter Bongo's work, which was widespread throughout Europe and particularly in France, De numerorum mysteria (1599 ed. aucta). This has allowed us to provide some indications taken from Mersenne's unpublished manuscripts in which he addresses the mathematical problem of perfect numbers in exegesis, according to the new dating of his unpublished theological manuscripts that we have established. Gabon's military-led government has denied allegations of torture and mistreatment of former president Ali Bongo Ondimba's family. Lawyers for the Bongo family filed a complaint in France, accusing the Gabonese government of torture and detention. The government spokesperson, Laurence Ndong, stated that the family is not being subjected to any form of mistreatment and emphasized that Ali Bongo is free to leave the country. The current ruler, General Brice Oligui Nguema, who led the coup that overthrew Bongo, is expected to visit Paris soon. An essay is presented on the author's experience with his boyfriend in Tupelo, Mississippi. The author says that they went to the house of his boyfriend's friends in Tupelo where in homemade wine is ready and his boyfriend plays guitar while her boyfriend's buddy plays bongo. She states that as she drives on the two-lane Highway 78, she notices a pickup trying to get along with the traffic. She adds that she call the 911 dispatcher to report on what she thinks is a medical emergency.

In the present paper a study of sound localization is carried out, considering two different sounds emitted from different hit materials (wood and bongo) as well as a Delta sound. The motivation of this research is to study how humans localize sounds coming from different materials, with the purpose of a future implementation of the acoustic sounds with better localization features in navigation aid systems or training audio-games suited for blind people. Wood and bongo sounds are recorded after hitting two objects made of these materials. Afterwards, they are analysed and processed. On the other hand, the Delta sound (click) is generated by using the Adobe Audition software, considering a frequency of 44.1 kHz. All sounds are analysed and convolved with previously measured non-individual Head-Related Transfer Functions both for an anechoic environment and for an environment with reverberation. The First Choice method is used in this experiment. Subjects are asked to localize the source position of the sound listened through the headphones, by using a graphic user interface. The analyses of the recorded data reveal that no significant differences are obtained either when considering the nature of the sounds (wood, bongo, Delta) or their environmental context (with or without reverberation). The localization accuracies for the anechoic sounds are: wood 90.19%, bongo 92.96% and Delta sound 89.59%, whereas for the sounds with reverberation the results are: wood 90.59%, bongo 92.63% and Delta sound 90.91%. According to these data, we can conclude that even when considering the reverberation effect, the localization accuracy does not significantly increase. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The distribution and abundance of fish larvae was studied along the eastern and southern shelf of Gran Canaria Island (Canary Islands) from July 2000 to June 2001. Oblique bongo hauls were carried out fortnightly during the daytime, coinciding with days of full and new moon. During February, the area was sampled every 2–5 days. About 17.3% of the ichthyoplanktonic community was composed of clupeiform larvae: 92.9% of these larvae were Sardinella aurita, whereas 4.7% and 2.4% were respectively Engraulis encrasicolus and Sardina pilchardus. Sardinella aurita larvae appeared during the whole year with two periods of maximum abundance: June to September and December to February. During the full moon their abundance was on average 38.5% (±6.8%) of their numbers during the new moon, showing a clear lunar periodicity. Engraulis encrasicolus larvae appeared from November to March, also coinciding with the new moon. Sardina pilchardus larvae only appeared during two short periods, both coinciding with filaments shed from the African coastal upwelling which reached the island. This fact confirms the transport of fish larvae from the upwelling area off northwest Africa to the Canary Islands, promoting a genetic flow among both sites. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
