Abstract

We study the demagnetization dynamics of the fully compensated half-metallic ferrimagnet Mn$_2$Ru$_x$Ga. While the two antiferromagnetically coupled sublattices are both composed of manganese, they exhibit different temperature dependencies due to their differing local environments. The sublattice magnetization dynamics triggered by femtosecond laser pulses are studied to reveal the roles played by the spin and intersublattice exchange. We find a two-step demagnetization process, similar to the well-established case of Gd(FeCo)$_3$, where the two Mn-sublattices have different demagnetization rates. The behaviour is analysed using a four-temperature model, assigning different temperatures to the two manganese spin baths. Even in this strongly exchange-coupled system, the two spin reservoirs have considerably different behaviour. The half-metallic nature and strong exchange coupling of Mn$_2$Ru$_x$Ga lead to spin angular momentum conservation at much shorter time scales than found for Gd(FeCo)$_3$ which suggests that low-power, sub-picosecond switching of the net moment of Mn$_2$Ru$_x$Ga is possible., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, J. Abstract

Here we study both static and time-resolved dynamic magnetic properties of the compensated ferrimagnet from room temperature down to 10K, thus crossing the magnetic compensation temperature $T_{M}$. The behaviour is analysed with a model of a simple collinear ferrimagnet with uniaxial anisotropy and site-specific gyromagnetic ratios. We find a maximum zero-applied-field resonance frequency of $\sim$160GHz and a low intrinsic Gilbert damping $\alpha$$\sim$0.02, making it a very attractive candidate for various spintronic applications., Comment: 6 pages, 6 figures, accepted paper in PRB (https://journals.aps.org/prb/accepted/df07aOb2T7f1e845c21429304f825e825c3a5f190)

Abstract

Human brain structure changes throughout the lifespan. Altered brain growth or rates of decline are implicated in a vast range of psychiatric, developmental and neurodegenerative diseases. In this study, we identified common genetic variants that affect rates of brain growth or atrophy in what is, to our knowledge, the first genome-wide association meta-analysis of changes in brain morphology across the lifespan. Longitudinal magnetic resonance imaging data from 15,640 individuals were used to compute rates of change for 15 brain structures. The most robustly identified genes GPR139, DACH1 and APOE are associated with metabolic processes. We demonstrate global genetic overlap with depression, schizophrenia, cognitive functioning, insomnia, height, body mass index and smoking. Gene set findings implicate both early brain development and neurodegenerative processes in the rates of brain changes. Identifying variants involved in structural brain changes may help to determine biological pathways underlying optimal and dysfunctional brain development and aging.

Abstract

The present study aimed to characterize the behavior of Bdellovibrio bacteriovorus in the presence of Staphylococcus aureus. B. bacteriovorus was co-cultured with S. aureus or Pseudomonas aeruginosa or Streptococcus mutans, in planktonic and sessile conditions. Co-cultures were studied by Field-Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy (FESEM), Scanning Transmission Electron Microscopy (STEM), turbidimetry, quantitative PCR (qPCR), and sequencing of gene Bd0108 of B. bacteriovorus. Results indicated that B. bacteriovorus comparably inhibited planktonic growth of P. aeruginosa and S. aureus, but not of S. mutans. FESEM and STEM showed that B. bacteriovorus interacts with S. aureus affecting its cell wall and membrane. Sequencing of gene Bd0108 did not reveal any of the mutations that can arise from the host-interaction (hit) locus. Although some Gram-negative species are reported to be B. bacteriovorus prey, it seems that in case of nutrient deficiency this predatory bacterium can also take advantage of some Gram-positive species. B. bacteriovorus behaviour in the presence of S. aureus is relevant for its possible therapeutic use in several pathologies, like cystic fibrosis in which S. aureus and P. aeruginosa frequently coexist as infectious agents.

Abstract

The in vitro activity of rufloxacin (MF 934), a new broad-spectrum fluoroquinolone, was tested against 1,032 gram-positive and gram-negative clinical isolates and compared to that of five other compounds of this class. All quinolones except for ciprofloxacin had limited activity against group A and B streptococci and pneumococci (MIC 90% of 4-64 mg/l) and no activity against enterococci. Most species of the enterobacteriaceae and staphylococci were found to be sensitive to rufloxacin (MIC 90% of 0.5-8 and 2-8 mg/l). Like the other quinolones except for ciprofloxacin, rufloxacin was not active against Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The antibacterial activity of rufloxacin was affected only minimally by an increase in the bacterial inoculum or by alterations in the pH of the medium. In spite of the relatively higher MICs of rufloxacin compared to those of the other quinolones, its favorable pharmacokinetic properties may account for its good clinical efficacy.

Abstract

Burkina Faso is one of the Subsaharan African nations. No national services for monitoring of antibiotic resistance are available, so the number of reports of resistance patterns among hospital pathogens are inconsistent. In order to evaluate antibiotic resistance, a total of 1998 valuable microrganisms were analysed during 2000 at the Medical Centre St. Camille of Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso's capital. They were isolated as follows: 1012 from urine-culture, 503 from tonsil swabs, 398 from pus, 53 from sputum and 32 from blood-cultures. Escherichia coli was the most isolated microrganism from urine (44%); Enterococcus faecalis from tonsil swabs (96.4%), Staphylococcus aureus from pus (17%) and K. pneumoniae (70%) from sputum. In general, resistance to the old antibiotics, such as aminopenicillins and cotrimoxazole was shown. The most active antibiotic was norfloxacin, a rarely used antibiotic in this country. In conclusion, our study shows that it is necessary to create antibiotic-resistance surveillance centers in the developing countries to adopt an accurate therapy to avoid exporting of antibiotic resistance to the developed countries linked to increased emigration.

Abstract

The interaction between tazobactam and several chromosome- and plasmid-encoded (TEM, SHV, PSE types) class A and C beta-lactamases was studied by spectrophotometry. Tazobactam behaved as a competitive inhibitor or inactivator able to restore in several cases the efficiency of piperacillin as a partner beta-lactam. A detailed kinetic analysis permitted measurement of the acylation efficiency for some cephalosporinases and broad-spectrum beta-lactamases; the presence of a turn-over of acyl-enzyme complex was also evaluated.

46. Pharmacokinetics of rufloxacin in healthy volunteers after repeated oral doses

Abstract

Rufloxacin is a new broad-spectrum fluoroquinolone antibacterial agent. The pharmacokinetics and safety of rufloxacin were evaluated after repeated oral administration to healthy volunteers. The drug was administered once a day for 6 consecutive days following two different dose schedules. The first group of 11 subjects was given a loading dose of 300 mg on the first day and 150 mg on the subsequent 5 days. The second group of 12 subjects was given a loading dose of 400 mg and 200 mg for 5 days. Serum levels and urine concentrations of rufloxacin were determined by microbiological assay. A simultaneous fit of all data points for each subject was done according to a one-compartment open model. The drug was rapidly absorbed (absorption half-life 17 +/- 6 min in the 300 + 150 mg and 11 +/- 5 min in the 400 + 200 mg dose regimen group) and reached maximal serum concentrations (2.77 +/- 0.24 and 3.62 +/- 0.35 micrograms/ml) 4.2 +/- 0.4 and 4.0 +/- 0.9 h after the first administration. Steady-state serum concentrations (3.19 +/- 0.31 and 4.06 +/- 0.33 micrograms/ml) were reached in 3.7 +/- 0.7 and 4.5 +/- 0.4 days. Elimination half-lives were 29.5 +/- 2.4 and 36.0 +/- 2.8 h.
