We have used the Dark Energy Camera (DECam) on the CTIO Blanco 4-m telescope to perform a new emission-line survey of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) using narrow-band H-alpha and [SII] filters in addition to a continuum band for use in creating pure emission-line images. We refer to this new survey as DeMCELS, to distinguish it from the earlier Magellanic Cloud Emission Line Survey (MCELS) that has been in service for nearly 25 years. DeMCELS covers $\sim 54$ degrees$^{2}$, encompassing most of the bright optical disk of the LMC. With DECam's pixel size of only 0.27", our DeMCELS survey provides a seeing-limited improvement of 3-5 times over MCELS and is comparable in depth, with surface brightness limits of 3.3E-17 erg cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$ arcsec$^{-2}$ in H-alpha and 2.9E-17 erg cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$ arcsec$^{-2}$ in H-alpha and [SII], respectively. DeMCELS provides detailed morphological information on nebulae of all scales, from the largest supershells to individual [HII] regions and supernova remnants, to bubbles of emission surrounding individual stars, and even to faint structures in the diffuse ionized gas of the LMC. Many complex regions of emission show significant variations in the ratio of [SII] to H-alpha, a sign of the mixture of shocks from stellar winds and/or supernovae with photoionization by embedded hot, young stars. We present the details of the observing strategy and data processing for this survey, and show selected results in comparison with previous data. Clifford Taubes showed that the moduli space of the variational equation of the Yang-Mills-Higgs functional on the plane is non-empty, and its elements correspond to "vortices". Inspired by this result, in this paper, we show that the moduli space of the Hitchin-type dimensional reduction of the Seiberg-Witten equations on the plane contains both exponentially decayed solutions and polynomial growth solutions. Furthermore, we show that there is correspondence from the moduli space of exponentially decayed and polynomial growth solutions to the symmetric products of complex numbers. We present JWST observations of the Crab Nebula, the iconic remnant of the historical SN 1054. The observations include NIRCam and MIRI imaging mosaics, plus MIRI/MRS IFU spectra that probe two select locations within the ejecta filaments. We derive a high-resolution map of dust emission and show that the grains are concentrated in the innermost, high-density filaments. These dense filaments coincide with multiple synchrotron bays around the periphery of the Crab's pulsar wind nebula (PWN). We measure synchrotron spectral index changes in small-scale features within the PWN's torus region, including the well-known knot and wisp structures. The index variations are consistent with Doppler boosting of emission from particles with a broken power-law distribution, providing the first direct evidence that the curvature in the particle injection spectrum is tied to the acceleration mechanism at the termination shock. We detect multiple nickel and iron lines in the ejecta filaments and use photoionization models to derive nickel-to-iron abundance ratios that are a factor of 3-8 higher than the solar ratio. We also find that the previously reported order-of-magnitude higher Ni/Fe values from optical data are consistent with the lower values from JWST when we reanalyze the optical emission using updated atomic data and account for local extinction from dust. We discuss the implications of our results for understanding the nature of the explosion that produced the Crab Nebula and conclude that the observational properties are most consistent with a low-mass iron-core-collapse supernova, even though an electron-capture explosion cannot be ruled out., Comment: 32 pages, 3 tables, 20 figures, accepted for publication in ApJL

We present initial results from a JWST survey of the youngest Galactic core-collapse supernova remnant Cassiopeia A (Cas A), made up of NIRCam and MIRI imaging mosaics that map emission from the main shell, interior, and surrounding circumstellar/interstellar material (CSM/ISM). We also present four exploratory positions of MIRI/MRS IFU spectroscopy that sample ejecta, CSM, and associated dust from representative shocked and unshocked regions. Surprising discoveries include: 1) a web-like network of unshocked ejecta filaments resolved to 0.01 pc scales exhibiting an overall morphology consistent with turbulent mixing of cool, low-entropy matter from the progenitor's oxygen layer with hot, high-entropy matter heated by neutrino interactions and radioactivity, 2) a thick sheet of dust-dominated emission from shocked CSM seen in projection toward the remnant's interior pockmarked with small (approximately one arcsecond) round holes formed by knots of high-velocity ejecta that have pierced through the CSM and driven expanding tangential shocks, 3) dozens of light echoes with angular sizes between 0.1 arcsecond to 1 arcminute reflecting previously unseen fine-scale structure in the ISM. NIRCam observations place new upper limits on infrared emission from the neutron star in Cas A's center and tightly constrain scenarios involving a possible fallback disk. These JWST survey data and initial findings help address unresolved questions about massive star explosions that have broad implications for the formation and evolution of stellar populations, the metal and dust enrichment of galaxies, and the origin of compact remnant objects., Comment: 27 pages, 10 figures, now published in ApJL

The nearby irregular galaxy NGC4449 has a star formation rate of about 0.4 solar masses/yr and should host of order 70 SNRs younger than 20,000 years, a typical age for SNRs expanding into to an ISM with unit density to reach the radiative phase. We have carried out an optical imaging and spectroscopic survey in an attempt to identify these SNRs. This task is challenging because diffuse gas with elevated ratios of [SII]:H-alpha is omnipresent in NGC4449, {causing confusion when using this common diagnostic for SNRs. Using narrow-band interference-filter images, we first identified 49 objects that have elevated [SII]:H-alpha ratios compared to nearby HII regions. Using Gemini-N and GMOS, we then obtained high-resolution spectra of 30 of these SNR candidates, 25 of which have [SII]:H-alpha ratios greater than 0.5. Of these, 15 nebulae are almost certainly SNRs, based on a combination of characteristics: higher [OI]:H-alpha ratios and broader line widths than observed from HII regions. The remainder are good candidates as well, but need additional confirmation. Surprisingly, despite having superior imaging and spectroscopic data sets to examine, we are unable to confirm most of the candidates suggested by Leonidaki (2013). While NGC4449 is likely an extreme case because of the high surface brightness and elevated [SII]:H-alpha ratio of diffuse gas, it highlights the need for sensitive high-resolution optical spectroscopy, or high spatial resolution radio or X-ray observations that can ensure accurate SNR identifications in external galaxies.

We develop a representation of the second kind for certain Hardy classes of solutions to nonhomogeneous Cauchy-Riemann equations and use it to show that boundary values in the sense of distributions of these functions can be represented as the sum of an atomic decomposition and an error term. We present a first look at the MRS observations of the nucleus of the nearby galaxy M83, taken with MIRI onboard JWST. The observations show a rich set of emission features from the ionized gas, warm molecular gas, and dust. To begin dissecting the complex processes in this part of the galaxy, we divide the observations into four different regions. We find that the strength of the emission features varies strongly from region to region, with the south-east region displaying the weakest features tracing the dust continuum and ISM properties. Comparison between the cold molecular gas traced by the $^{12}$CO (1-0) transition with ALMA and the H$_2$ S(1) transition shows a similar spatial distribution. This is in contrast to the distribution of the much warmer H$_2$ emission from the S(7) transition found to be concentrated around the optical nucleus. We use the rotational emission lines and model the H$_2$ excitation to estimate a total molecular gas mass accounting for the warm H$_2$ component of M($>$50 K)$_{\rm H_{2}}$ = 67.90 ($\pm 5.43$)$\times$10$^{6}$ M$_{\odot}$. We compare this value to the total gas mass inferred by probing the cold H$_2$ gas through the $^{12}$CO (1-0) emission, M(CO)$_{\rm H_{2}}$ = 17.15$\times$10$^{6}$ M$_{\odot}$. We estimate that $\sim$75\% of the total molecular gas mass is contained in the warm H$_2$ component. We also identify [\ion{O}{4}] 25.89 $\mu$m and [\ion{Fe}{2}] 25.99 $\mu$m emission. We propose that the diffuse [\ion{Fe}{2}] 25.99 $\mu$m emission might be tracing shocks created during the interactions between the hot wind produced by the starburst and the much cooler ISM above the galactic plane. We present proper motion measurements of oxygen-rich ejecta of the LMC supernova remnant N132D using two epochs of Hubble Space Telescope Advanced Camera for Surveys data spanning 16 years. The proper motions of 120 individual knots of oxygen-rich gas were measured and used to calculate a center of expansion (CoE) of $\alpha$=05:25:01.71 and $\delta$=-69:38:41.64 (J2000) with a 1-$\sigma$ uncertainty of 2.90 arcseconds. This new CoE measurement is 9.2 and 10.8 arcseconds from two previous CoE estimates based on the geometry of the optically emitting ejecta. We also derive an explosion age of 2770 $\pm$ 500 yr, which is consistent with recent age estimates of $\approx 2500$ yr made from 3D ejecta reconstructions. We verify our estimates of the CoE and age using a new automated procedure that detected and tracked the proper motions of 137 knots, with 73 knots that overlap with the visually identified knots. We find the proper motions of ejecta are still ballistic, despite the remnant's age, and are consistent with the notion that the ejecta are expanding into an ISM cavity. Evidence for explosion asymmetry from the parent supernova is also observed. Using the visually measured proper motion measurements and corresponding center of expansion and age, we compare N132D to other supernova remnants with proper motion ejecta studies., Comment: 26 pages, 16 figures, accepted to ApJ

In order to better characterize the rich supernova remnant (SNR) population of M83 (NGC 5236), we have obtained high-resolution (about 85 km/s) spectra of 119 of the SNRs and SNR candidates in M83 with Gemini/GMOS, as well as new spectra of the young SNRs B12-174a and SN1957D. Most of the SNRs and SNR candidates have [S II]:H{\alpha} ratios that exceed 0.4. Combining these results with earlier studies we have carried out with MUSE and at lower spectroscopic resolution with GMOS, we have confirmed a total of 238 emission nebulae to be SNRs on the basis of their [S II]:H{\alpha} ratios, about half of which have emission lines that show velocity broadening greater than 100 km/s, providing a kinematic confirmation that they are SNRs and not H II regions. Looking at the entire sample, we find a strong correlation between velocity widths and the line ratios of [O I]{\lambda}6300:H{\alpha}, [N II]{\lambda}6584:H{\alpha} and [S II]{\lambda}{\lambda}6716,6731:H{\alpha}. The density-sensitive [S II]{\lambda}6716:{\lambda}6731 line ratio is strongly correlated with SNR diameter, but not with the velocity width. We study pre-supernova feedback in a sample of $\sim$ 4700 HII regions in the nearby spiral galaxy M83, identified on their H$\alpha$ emission. We pectroscopically identify Wolf-Rayet (WR) stars populating the star-forming regions. For each HII region, we compute the pressure of ionised gas ($P_{\rm ion}$) and the direct radiation pressure ($P_{\rm dir}$) acting in the region, and investigate how they vary with galactocentric distance, with the physical properties of the region, and with the pressure of the galactic environment ($P_\mathrm{DE}$). For a subset of $\sim$ 500 regions, we also investigate the link between the pressure terms and the properties of the cluster population (age, mass, and LyC flux). We find that $P_{\rm ion}$ dominates over $P_{\rm dir}$ by at least a factor of 10 on average over the disk. Both pressure terms are strongly enhanced and become almost comparable in the central starburst region. In the disk ($R \geq 0.15~R_e$), we observe that $P_{\rm dir}$ stays approximately constant with galactocentric distance. $P_{\rm dir}$ is positively correlated with an increase in radiation field strength (linked to the negative metallicity gradient in the galaxy), while it decreases in low extinction regions. $P_{\rm ion}$ decreases constantly for increasing galactocentric distances. In general, we observe that HII regions near the center are underpressured with respect to their surroundings, whereas regions in the disk are overpressured and hence expanding. We find that regions hosting younger clusters or having more mass in young star clusters have a higher internal pressure, indicating that clustered star formation is likely playing a dominant role in setting the pressure. Finally, we estimate that only 13 % of HII regions hosting young clusters and WR stars have $f_{\rm esc} \geq 0$.[Abridged], Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A

Here we describe a new study of the SNRs and SNR candidates in nearby face-on spiral galaxy M83, based primarily on MUSE integral field spectroscopy. Our revised catalog of SNR candidates in M83 has 366 objects, 81 of which are reported here for the first time. Of these, 229 lie within the MUSE observation region, 160 of which have spectra with [SII]:Halpha ratios exceeding 0.4, the value generally accepted as confirmation that an emission nebula is shock-heated. Combined with 51 SNR candidates outside the MUSE region with high [SII]:Halpha ratios, there are 211 spectroscopically-confirmed SNRs in M83, the largest number of confirmed SNRs in any external galaxy. MUSE's combination of relatively high spectral resolution and broad wavelength coverage has allowed us to explore two other properties of SNRs that could serve as the basis of future SNR searches. Specifically, most of the objects identified as SNRs on the basis of [SII]:Halpha ratios exhibit more velocity broadening and lower ratios of [SIII]:[SII] emission than HII regions. A search for nebulae with the very broad emission lines expected from young, rapidly expanding remnants revealed none, except for the previously identified B12-174a. The SNRs identified in M83 are, with few exceptions, middle-aged ISM-dominated ones. Smaller diameter candidates show a larger range of velocity broadening and a larger range of gas densities than the larger diameter objects, as expected if the SNRs expanding into denser gas brighten and then fade from view at smaller diameters than those expanding into a more tenuous ISM, Comment: 28 page, including 14 figures and 4 tables; accepted for publication in ApJ

We present a large VLT/MUSE mosaic (3.8 x 3.8 kpc) of the nearby spiral galaxy M83, with a spatial resolution ~20 pc. We obtained the kinematics of the stars and ionised gas, and compared them with molecular gas kinematics from ALMA CO(2-1). We separated the ionised gas into HII regions and diffuse ionised gas (DIG) and determined the fraction of Ha luminosity originating from the DIG (f_DIG). We observe that both stars and gas trace the galactic disk rotation, as well as a fast-rotating nuclear component, likely connected to secular processes driven by the galactic bar. In the gas kinematics, we observe a stream east of the nucleus, redshifted with respect to the disk. The stream is surrounded by an extended ionised gas region with enhanced velocity dispersion and a high ionisation state, which is largely consistent with being ionised by slow shocks. We interpret this feature as either the superposition of the disk and an extraplanar layer of DIG, or as a bar-driven inflow of shocked gas. A double Gaussian component fit to the Ha line also reveals the presence of a nuclear biconic structure whose axis of symmetry is perpendicular to the bar. The two cones appear blue- and redshifted along the line of sight and stand out for having an Ha emission separated by up to 200 km s-1 from that of the disk, and a high velocity dispersion ~80-200 km s-1. At the far end of the cones, we observe that the gas is consistent with being ionised by shocks. These features had never been observed before in M83; we postulate that they are tracing a starburst-driven outflow shocking into the surrounding ISM. Finally, we obtain f_DIG ~ 13% in our field of view. We inspect the emission of the HII regions and DIG in `BPT' diagrams, finding that in HII regions photoionisation accounts for 99.8% of the Ha flux, whereas the DIG has a mixed contribution from photoionisation (94.9%) and shocks (5.1%). We present results from deep Chandra observations of the young Type Ia supernova remnant (SNR) 0509-68.7, also known as N103B, located in the Large Magellanic cloud (LMC). The remnant displays an asymmetry in brightness, with the western hemisphere appearing significantly brighter than the eastern half. Previous multi-wavelength observations have attributed the difference to a density gradient and suggested circumstellar material origins, drawing similarities to Kepler's SNR. We apply a clustering technique combined with traditional imaging analysis to spatially locate various emission components within the remnant. We find that O and Mg emission is strongest along the blast wave, and coincides with Spitzer observations of dust emission and optical emission from the non-radiative shocks. The abundances of O and Mg in these regions are enhanced relative to the average LMC abundances and appear as a distinct spatial distribution compared to the ejecta products, supporting the circumstellar medium (CSM) interpretation. We also find that the spatial distribution of Cr is identical to that of Fe in the interior of the remnant, and does not coincide at all with the O and Mg emission., Comment: 23 pages, 17 Figures. We present a revised distance to the Cygnus Loop supernova remnant of $725\pm15$ pc based on Gaia Early Data Release 3 parallax measurements (EDR3) for several stars previously found to be located either inside or behind the supernova based on the presence of high-velocity absorption lines in their spectra. This revised distance estimate and error means the Cygnus Loop remnant now has an estimated distance uncertainty comparable to that of its $\simeq$18 pc radius., Comment: 3 pages, 1 table

We constrained the progenitor masses for 169 supernova remnants, 8 historically observed supernovae, and the black hole formation candidate in NGC 6946, finding that they are consistent with originating from a standard initial mass function. Additionally, there were 16 remnants that showed no sign of nearby star formation consistent with a core-collapse supernova, making them good Type Ia candidates. Using $Hubble$ $Space$ $Telescope$ broadband imaging, we measured stellar photometry of ACS/WFC fields in F435W, F555W, F606W, and F814W filters as well as WFC3/UVIS fields in F438W, F606W, and F814W. We then fitted this photometry with stellar evolutionary models to determine the ages of the young populations present at the positions of the SNRs and SNe. We then infer a progenitor mass probability distribution from the fitted age distribution. For 37 SNRs we tested how different filter combinations affected the inferred masses. We find that filters sensitive to H$\alpha$, [N II], and [S II] gas emission can bias mass estimates for remnants that rely on our technique. Using a KS-test analysis on our most reliable measurements, we find the progenitor mass distribution is well-matched by a power-law index of $-2.6^{+0.5}_{-0.6}$, which is consistent with a standard initial mass function., Comment: 28 pages, 13 figures, 4 tables

We present new proper motion measurements of optically emitting oxygen-rich knots of supernova remnant 1E 0102.2-7219 (E0102), which are used to estimate the remnant's center of expansion and age. Four epochs of high resolution Hubble Space Telescope images spanning 19 yr were retrieved and analyzed. We found a robust center of expansion of alpha=1:04:02.48 and delta=-72:01:53.92 (J2000) with 1-sigma uncertainty of 1.77 arcseconds using 45 knots from images obtained with the Advanced Camera for Surveys using the F475W filter in 2003 and 2013 having the highest signal-to-noise ratio. We also estimate an upper limit explosion age of 1738 +/- 175 yr by selecting knots with the highest proper motions, that are assumed to be the least decelerated. We find evidence of an asymmetry in the proper motions of the knots as a function of position angle. We conclude that these asymmetries were most likely caused by interaction between E0102's original supernova blast wave and an inhomogeneous surrounding environment, as opposed to intrinsic explosion asymmetry. The observed non-homologous expansion suggests that the use of a free expansion model inaccurately offsets the center of expansion and leads to an overestimated explosion age. Using a combination of ground-based and HST imaging, we have constructed a catalog of 179 supernova remnants (SNRs) and SNR candidates in the nearby spiral galaxy M51. Follow-up spectroscopy of 66 of the candidates confirms 61 of these as SNRs, and suggests that the vast majority of the unobserved objects are SNRs as well. A total of 55 of the candidates are coincident with (mostly soft) X-ray sources identified in deep Chandra observations of M51; searching the positions of other soft X-ray sources resulted in several additional possible optical candidates. There are 16 objects in the catalog coincident with known radio sources. None of the sources with spectra shows the high velocities (>500 km/s) characteristic of young, ejecta-dominated SNRs like Cas A; instead, most if not all appear to be middle-aged SNRs. The general properties of the SNRs, size distribution and spectral characteristics, resemble those in other nearby spiral galaxies, notably M33, M83, and NGC6946, where similar samples exist. However, the spectroscopically observed [N II]:H{\alpha} ratios appear to be significantly higher than in any of these other galaxies. We carry out a comparative analysis of the metallicities from the stellar, neutral-gas, and ionized-gas components in the metal-rich spiral galaxy M83. We analyze spectroscopic observations taken with the Hubble Space Telescope (HST), the Large Binocular Telescope (LBT) and the Very Large Telescope (VLT). We detect a clear depletion of the HI gas, as observed from the HI column densities in the nuclear region of this spiral galaxy. We find column densities of log[$N$(HI) cm$^{-2}$] $<$ 20.0 at galactocentric distances of $<$ 0.18 kpc, in contrast to column densities of log[$N$(HI) cm$^{-2}$] $\sim$ 21.0 in the galactic disk, a trend observed in other nearby spiral galaxies. We measure a metallicity gradient of $-$0.03 $\pm$ 0.01 dex kpc$^{-1}$ for the ionized gas, comparable to the metallicity gradient of a local benchmark of 49 nearby star-forming galaxies of $-$0.026 $\pm$ 0.002 dex kpc$^{-1}$. Our co-spatial metallicity comparison of the multi-phase gas and stellar populations shows excellent agreement outside of the nucleus of the galaxy hinting at a scenario where the mixing of newly synthesized metals from the most massive stars in the star clusters takes longer than their lifetimes ($\sim$10 Myr). Finally, our work shows that caution must be taken when studying the metallicity gradient of the neutral-gas component in star-forming galaxies, since this can be strongly biased, as these environments can be dominated by molecular gas. Radiative shock waves in the Cygnus Loop and other supernova remnants show different morphologies in [O III] and H{\alpha} emission. We use HST spectra and narrowband images to study the development of turbulence in the cooling region behind a shock on the west limb of the Cygnus Loop. We refine our earlier estimates of shock parameters that were based upon ground-based spectra, including ram pressure, vorticity and magnetic field strength. We apply several techniques, including Fourier power spectra and the Rolling Hough Transform, to quantify the shape of the rippled shock front as viewed in different emission lines. We assess the relative importance of thermal instabilities, the thin shell instability, upstream density variations, and upstream magnetic field variations in producing the observed structure., Comment: 40 pages, 22 Figures. We present HST/WFC3 multiband imagery of N103B, the remnant of a Type Ia supernova in the Large Magellanic Cloud, as well as HST/COS ultraviolet spectroscopy of the brightest radiatively shocked region. The images show a wide range of morphology and relative emission-line intensities, from smooth Balmer-line dominated collisionless shocks due to the primary blast wave, to clumpy radiative shock filaments due to secondary shocks in density enhancements. The COS data show strong FUV line emission despite a moderately high extinction along this line of sight. We use the COS data with previous optical spectra to constrain the shock conditions and refine the abundance analysis, finding abundances typical of the local interstellar medium within the uncertainties. Under an assumption that the material being shocked was shed from the pre-supernova system, this finding places constraints on any significant enrichment in that material, and thus on the non-degenerate star in what was presumably a single-degenerate Type Ia supernova., Comment: 25 pages, 6 figures, 2 tables, accepted for Astrophysical Journal, August 27, 2020

NGC6946 is a high star formation rate face-on spiral galaxy that has hosted ten supernovae since 1917. Not surprisingly, a large number of supernova remnants and candidates have been identified either as optical nebulae with high [S II]:H$\alpha$ line ratios (147) or as compact non-thermal radio sources (35). However, there are only seven overlaps between these two samples. Here, we apply [Fe II] 1.644 $\mu$m emission as a new diagnostic to search for supernova remnants in an attempt to resolve this discrepancy. [Fe II] is expected to be relatively strong in the radiative shocks of supernova remnants and almost absent in HII regions. It is less susceptible to the effects of absorption along the line of sight than the optical lines normally used to identify remnants. Using data from the WFC3 camera on HST}, we identify 132 [Fe II] emission nebulae in NGC6946 as likely supernova remnants. Of these, 54 align with previously known optical supernova remnants. The remaining 78 objects are new; of these 44 are visible in new HST imagery in H$\alpha$ and [S II]. This brings the total number of supernova remnant candidates (from optical and/or IR data) in NGC6946 to 225. A total of 14 coincidences with radio supernova remnant candidates (out of 30 in our search area) are found in this expanded list. The identification of so many new remnant candidates validates the use of [Fe II] imagery for finding remnants, and suggests that previous remnant searches in other galaxies may be far from complete., Comment: 43 pages, 9 figures, 2 tables, accepted for publication in ApJ

We present a new catalogue of radio sources in the face-on spiral galaxy M83. Radio observations taken in 2011, 2015, and 2017 with the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA) at 5.5 and 9 GHz have detected 270 radio sources. Although a small number of these sources are background extragalactic sources, most are either H II regions or supernova remnants (SNRs) within M83 itself. Three of the six historical supernovae are detected, as is the very young remnant that had been identified in a recent study, which is likely the result of a supernova that exploded in the last ~100 years but was missed. All of these objects are generally fading with time. Confusion limits our ability to measure the radio emission from a number of the SNRs in M83, but 64 were detected in unconfused regions, and these have the approximate power-law luminosity function which has been observed in other galaxies. The SNRs in M83 are systematically smaller in diameter and brighter than those that have been detected at radio wavelengths in M33. A number of the radio sources are coincident with X-ray sources in M83; most of these coincident sources turn out to be supernova remnants. Our dual frequency observations are among the most sensitive to date for a spiral galaxy outside the Local Group; despite this we were not able to place realistic constraints on the spectral indices, and as a result, it was not possible to search for supernova remnants based on their radio properties alone., Comment: 23 pages, 17 figures, 8 tables. We have obtained a contiguous set of long-slit spectra of a shock wave in the Cygnus Loop to investigate its structure, which is far from the morphology predicted by 1D models. Proper motions from Hubble Space Telescope images combined with the known distance to the Cygnus Loop provide an accurate shock speed. Earlier analyses of shock spectra estimated the shock speed, postshock density, temperature, and elemental abundances. In this paper we determine several more shock parameters: a more accurate shock speed, ram pressure, density, compression ratio, dust destruction efficiency, magnetic field strength, and vorticity in the cooling region. From the derived shock properties we estimate the emissivities of synchrotron emission in the radio and pion decay emission in the gamma rays. Both are consistent with the observations if we assume simple adiabatic compression of ambient cosmic rays as in the van der Laan mechanism. We also find that, although the morphology is far from that predicted by 1D models and the line ratios vary dramatically from point to point, the average spectrum is matched reasonably well by 1D shock models with the shock speed derived from the measured proper motion. A subsequent paper will analyze the development of turbulence in the cooling zone behind the shock.

The spectra of disc-dominated cataclysmic variables (CVs) often deviate from the spectra of accretion disc models; in particular, the Balmer jump and absorption lines are found to be shallower in the observations than in the models. We carried out a combined ultraviolet-optical spectral analysis of two dwarf novae: UZ Ser in outburst, decline, and quiescence, and CY Lyr on the rise to outburst and in outburst. We fit the Balmer jump and absorption lines, the continuum flux level and slope by adjusting the accretion rate, inclination, and disc outer radius. For both systems we find an accretion rate $\dot{M} \approx 8 \times 10^{-9}M_\odot$/yr in outburst, and $\dot{M} \approx 2-3 \times 10^{-9}M_\odot$/yr for the rise and decline phases. The outer disc radius we derive is smaller than expected ($R_{\rm disc} \approx 0.2a$, where $a$ is the binary separation), except during late rise (for CY Lyr) where $R_{\rm disc}=0.3a$. UZ Ser also reveals a 60,000~K white dwarf. These results show that during a dwarf nova cycle the radius of the disc is the largest just before the peak of the outburst, in qualitative agreement with the disc instability model for dwarf nova outbursts. We suspect that an additional emitting component (e.g. disc wind) is also at work to reduce the slope of the continuum and size of the Balmer jump and absorption lines. Contemporary fuzz testing techniques focus on identifying memory corruption vulnerabilities that allow adversaries to achieve either remote code execution or information disclosure. Meanwhile, Algorithmic Complexity (AC)vulnerabilities, which are a common attack vector for denial-of-service attacks, remain an understudied threat. In this paper, we present HotFuzz, a framework for automatically discovering AC vulnerabilities in Java libraries. HotFuzz uses micro-fuzzing, a genetic algorithm that evolves arbitrary Java objects in order to trigger the worst-case performance for a method under test. We define Small Recursive Instantiation (SRI) as a technique to derive seed inputs represented as Java objects to micro-fuzzing. After micro-fuzzing, HotFuzz synthesizes test cases that triggered AC vulnerabilities into Java programs and monitors their execution in order to reproduce vulnerabilities outside the fuzzing framework. HotFuzz outputs those programs that exhibit high CPU utilization as witnesses for AC vulnerabilities in a Java library. We evaluate HotFuzz over the Java Runtime Environment (JRE), the 100 most popular Java libraries on Maven, and challenges contained in the DARPA Space and Time Analysis for Cybersecurity (STAC) program. We evaluate SRI's effectiveness by comparing the performance of micro-fuzzing with SRI, measured by the number of AC vulnerabilities detected, to simply using empty values as seed inputs. In this evaluation, we verified known AC vulnerabilities, discovered previously unknown AC vulnerabilities that we responsibly reported to vendors, and received confirmation from both IBM and Oracle. Microquasars are neutron star or black hole X-ray binaries with jets. These jets can create shock-ionized bubbles of hot plasma that can masquerade as peculiar supernova remnants (SNRs) in extragalactic surveys. To see if this is the case in the well-studied spiral galaxy M83, where one microquasar candidate (M83-MQ1) has already been identified, we studied the properties of nine SNR candidates, selected because of their elongated or irregular morphology, from the set of previously identified SNRs in that galaxy. Using multiwavelength data from Chandra, the Hubble Space Telescope, Gemini, and the Australia Telescope Compact Array, we found that at least six of our nine sources are best interpreted as SNRs. For one source, we do not have enough observational data to explain its linear morphology. Another source shows a nebular optical spectrum dominated by photo-ionization by O stars, but its excess [Fe II] and radio luminosity suggest a possible hidden SNR. Finally, one source (S2) shows an elongated structure of ionized gas, two radio sources along that line, and an accretion-powered X-ray source in between them (the Chandra source L14-139). While S2 could be a chance alignment of multiple SNRs and one X-ray binary, it seems more likely that it is a single physical structure powered by the jet from the accreting compact object. In the latter case, the size and luminosity of S2 suggest a kinetic power of around 10^{40} erg/s, in the same class as the most powerful microquasars in the local universe (e.g., S26 in NGC7793 and SS433 in our own Galaxy)., Comment: Accepted by ApJ. Many more supernova remnants (SNRs) are now known in external galaxies than in the Milky Way. Most of these SNRs have been identified using narrow-band imaging, separating SNRs from HII regions on the basis of [SII]:H-alpha ratios that are elevated compared to HII regions. However, the boundary between SNRs and HII regions is not always distinct, especially at low surface brightness. Here we explore velocity structure as a possible criterion for separating SNRs from HII regions, using a sample of well-studied SNRs in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) as well as a small number of SNRs in the galaxy M83. We find, perhaps not surprisingly, that even at large diameters, SNRs exhibit velocity broadening sufficient to readily distinguish them from HII regions. We thus suggest that the purity of most extragalactic samples would be greatly improved through spectroscopic observations with a velocity resolution of order 50~km/s$., Comment: 19 pages, 9 figures. We determine the ages of the young, resolved stellar populations at the locations of 237 optically-identified supernova remnants in M83. These age distributions put constraints on the progenitor masses of the supernovae that produced 199 of the remnants. The other 38 show no evidence for having a young progenitor and are therefore good Type Ia SNR candidates. Starting from Hubble Space Telescope broadband imaging, we measured resolved stellar photometry of seven archival WFC3/UVIS fields in F336W, F438W, and F814W. We generate color-magnitude diagrams of the stars within 50 pc of each SNR and fit them with stellar evolution models to obtain the population ages. From these ages we infer the progenitor mass that corresponds to the lifetime of the most prominent age that is $<$50 Myr. In this sample, there are 47 SNRs with best-fit progenitor masses $>$15 M$_{\odot}$, and 5 of these are $>$15 M$_{\odot}$ at 84% confidence. This is the largest collection of high-mass progenitors to date, including our highest-mass progenitor inference found so far, with a constraint of $<$8 Myr. Overall, the distribution of progenitor masses has a power-law index of $-3.0^{+0.2}_{-0.7}$, steeper than Salpeter initial mass function ($-2.35$). It remains unclear whether the reason for the low number of high-mass progenitors is due to the difficulty of finding and measuring such objects or because only a fraction of very massive stars produce supernovae., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ, 33 pages, 7 figures, 3 tables

We have performed new 1.4 GHz and 5 GHz observations of the Local Group galaxy M33 with the Jansky Very Large Array. Our survey has a limiting sensitivity of 20 uJy (4-sigma) and a resolution of 5.9 arcsec (FWHM), corresponding to a spatial resolution of 24 pc at 817 kpc. Using a new multi-resolution algorithm, we have created a catalog of 2875 sources, including 675 with well-determined spectral indices. We detect sources at the position of 319 of the X-ray sources in the Tuellmann et al. (2011) Chandra survey of M33, the majority of which are likely to be background galaxies. The radio source coincident with M33 X-8, the nuclear source, appears to be extended. Along with numerous H II regions or portions of H II region complexes, we detect 155 of the 217 optical supernova remnants included in the lists of Long et al. (2010) and Lee & Lee (2014), making this by far the largest sample of remnants at known distances with multiwavelength coverage. The remnants show a large dispersion in the ratio of radio to X-ray luminosity at a given diameter, a result that challenges the current generation of models for synchrotron radiation evolution in supernova remnants. The relatively nearby spiral galaxy NGC~6946 is one of the most actively star forming galaxies in the local Universe. Ten supernovae (SNe) have been observed since 1917, and hence NGC6946 surely contains a large number of supernova remnants (SNRs). Here we report a new optical search for these SNRs using narrow-band images obtained with the WIYN telescope. We identify 147 emission nebulae as likely SNRs, based on elevated [SII]:Halpha ratios compared to HII regions. We have obtained spectra of 102 of these nebulae with Gemini North-GMOS; of these, 89 have [SII]:Halpha ratios greater than 0.4, the canonical optical criterion for identifying SNRs. There is very little overlap between our sample and the SNR candidates identified by Lacey et al. (2001) from radio data. Also, very few of our SNR candidates are known X-ray sources, unlike the situation in some other galaxies such as M33 and M83. The emission line ratios, e.g., [NII]:Halpha, of the candidates in NGC6946 are typical of those observed in SNR samples from other galaxies with comparable metallicity. None of the candidates observed in our low-resolution spectra show evidence of anomalous abundances or significant velocity broadening. A search for emission at the sites of all the historical SNe in NGC6946 resulted in detections for only two: SN1980K and SN2004et. Spectra of both show very broad, asymmetric line profiles, consistent with the interaction between SN ejecta and the progenitor star's circumstellar material, as seen in late spectra from other core-collapse SNe of similar age., Comment: 36 pages, 11 figures, accepted for publication in Astrophysical Journal

Stellar populations are powerful tools for investigating the evolution of extragalactic environments. We present the first UV integrated-light spectroscopic observations for 15 young star clusters in the starburst M83 with a special focus on metallicity measurements. The data were obtained with the Cosmic Origins Spectrograph (COS) onboard the Hubble Space Telescope. We analyse the data applying an abundance technique previously used to study an optical set of star clusters. We estimate a central metallicity of [Z] = $+$0.20 $\pm$ 0.15 dex in agreement with those obtained through independent methods, i.e. $J$-band and blue supergiants. We estimate a UV metallicity gradient of $-$0.041 $\pm$ 0.022 dex kpc$^{-1}$ consistent with the optical metallicity gradient of $-$0.040 $\pm$ 0.032 dex kpc$^{-1}$ for $R/R_{25}<0.5$. Combining our stellar metallicities, UV and optical, with those from HII regions (strong-line abundances based on empirical calibrations) we identify two possible breaks in the gradient of M83 at galactocentric distances of $R\sim0.5$ and $1.0\:R_{25}$. If the abundance breaks are genuine, the metallicity gradient of this galaxy follows a steep-shallow-steep trend, a scenario predicted by three-dimensional (3D) numerical simulations of disc galaxies. The first break is located near the corotation radius. This first steep gradient may have originated by recent star formation episodes and a relatively young bar ($<$1 Gyr). In the numerical simulations the shallow gradient is created by the effects of dilution by outflow where low-metallicity material is mixed with enriched gas. And finally, the second break and last steep gradient mark the farthest galactocentric distances where the outward flow has penetrated., Comment: 18 pages, 7 figures, Accepted for Publication in ApJ

We present a second epoch of {\it Chandra} observations of the Type Ia LMC SNR 0509-68.7 (N103B) obtained in 2017. When combined with the earlier observations from 1999, we have a 17.4-year baseline with which we can search for evidence of the remnant's expansion. Although the lack of strong point source detections makes absolute image alignment at the necessary accuracy impossible, we can measure the change in the diameter and the area of the remnant, and find that it has expanded by an average velocity of 4170 (2860, 5450) km s$^{-1}$. This supports the picture of this being a young remnant; this expansion velocity corresponds to an undecelerated age of 850 yr, making the real age somewhat younger, consistent with results from light echo studies. Previous infrared observations have revealed high densities in the western half of the remnant, likely from circumstellar material, so it is likely that the real expansion velocity is lower on that side of the remnant and higher on the eastern side. A similar scenario is seen in Kepler's SNR. N103B joins the rare class of Magellanic Cloud SNRs with measured proper motions., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ Letters

The Cygnus Loop is among the brightest and best studied evolved Galactic supernova remnants. However, its distance has remained uncertain thus undermining quantitative understanding about many of its fundamental properties. Here we present moderate-dispersion spectra of stars with projected locations toward the remnant. Spectra of three stars revealed Na I 5890,5896 A and Ca II 3934 A absorption features associated with the remnant's expanding shell, with velocities ranging from -160 to +240 km/s. Combining Gaia DR2 parallax measurements for these stars with other recent observations, we find the distance to the Cygnus Loop's centre is 735 +/-25 pc, only a bit less than the 770 pc value proposed by Minkowski some 60 years ago. Using this new distance, we discuss the remnant's physical properties including size, SN explosion energy, and shock velocities. We also present multi-wavelength emission maps which reveal that, instead of being located in a progenitor wind-driven cavity as has long been assumed, the Cygnus Loop lies in an extended, low density region. Rather than wind-driven cavity walls, these images reveal in unprecedented clarity the sizes and locations of local interstellar clouds with which the remnant is interacting, giving rise to its large-scale morphology., Comment: 14 pages, 9 figures; minor changes to match published MNRAS version

To date, over 220 emission nebulae in M33 have been identified as supernova remnants (SNRs) or SNR candidates, principally through [SII]:Halpha line ratios that are elevated compared to those in H II regions. In many cases, the determination of a high [SII]:Halpha line ratio was made using narrow-band interference filter images and has not been confirmed spectroscopically. Here we present MMT 6.5 m optical spectra that we use to measure [SII]:Halpha and other line ratios in an attempt to determine the nature of these suggested candidates. Of the 197 objects in our sample, 120 have no previously published spectroscopic observations. We confirm that the majority of candidate SNRs have emission line ratios characteristic of SNRs. While no candidates show Doppler-broadened lines expected from young, ejecta-dominated SNRs (> 1000 km/s), a substantial number do exhibit lines that are broader than H II regions. We argue that the majority of the objects with high [SII]:Halpha line ratios (>0.4) are indeed SNRs, but at low surface brightness the distinction between H II regions and SNRs becomes less obvious, and additional criteria, such as X-ray detection, are needed. We have carried out a study of the X-ray properties of the supernova remnant (SNR) population in M33 with XMM-Newton, comprising deep observations of 8 fields in M33 covering all of the area within the D$_{25}$ contours, and with a typical luminosity of 7.1$\times$10$^{34}$ erg s$^{-1}$ (0.2-2.0 keV) . Here we report our work to characterize the X-ray properties of the previously identified SNRs in M33, as well as our search for new X-ray detected SNRs. With our deep observations and large field of view we have detected 105 SNRs at the 3$\sigma$ level, of which 54 SNRs are newly detected in X-rays, and three are newly discovered SNRs. Combining XMM-Newton data with deep Chandra survey data allows detailed spectral fitting of 15 SNRs, for which we have measured temperatures, ionization timescales, and individual abundances. This large sample of SNRs allows us to construct an X-ray luminosity function, and compare its shape to luminosity functions from host galaxies of differing metallicities and star formation rates to look for environmental effects on SNR properties. We conclude that while metallicity may play a role in SNR population characteristics, differing star formation histories on short timescales, and small-scale environmental effects appear to cause more significant differences between X-ray luminosity distributions. In addition, we analyze the X-ray detectability of SNRs, and find that in M33 SNRs with higher [SII]/H$\alpha$ ratios, as well as those with smaller galactocentric distances, are more detectable in X-rays., Comment: 29 pages, 14 figures, 5 tables, accepted for publication in MNRAS

The standard disk is often inadequate to model disk-dominated cataclysmic variables (CVs) and generates a spectrum that is bluer than the observed UV spectra [Puebla et al 2007]. X-ray observations of these systems reveal an optically thin boundary layer (BL) expected to appear as an inner hole in the disk. Consequently, we truncate the inner disk. However, instead of removing the inner disk, we impose the no-shear boundary condition at the truncation radius, thereby lowering the disk temperature and generating a spectrum that better fits the UV data. With our modified disk, we analyze the archival UV spectra of three novalikes that cannot be fitted with standard disks. For the VY Scl systems MV Lyr and BZ Cam, we fit a hot inflated white dwarf WD with a cold modified disk ($\dot{M} \sim $ a few $10^{-9}M_{\odot}$/yr). For V592 Cas, the slightly modified disk ($\dot{M} \sim 6 \times 10^{-9}M_{\odot}$/yr) completely dominates the UV. These results are consistent with Swift X-ray observations of these systems [Balman et al 2014], revealing BLs merged with ADAF-like flows and/or hot coronae, where the advection of energy is likely launching an outflow and heating the WD, thereby explaining the high WD temperature in VY Scl systems. This is further supported by the fact that the X-ray hardness ratio increases with the shallowness of the UV slope in a small CV sample we examine. Furthermore, for 105 disk-dominated systems, the International Ultraviolet Explorer (IUE) spectra UV slope decreases in the same order as the ratio of the X-ray flux to optical/UV flux: from SU UMa's, to U Gem's, Z Cam's, UX UMa's, and VY Scl's., Comment: ApJ, in press, 2017

We report the results from a spectrophotometric study sampling the roughly 300 candidate supernova remnants (SNRs) in M83 identified through optical imaging with Magellan/IMACS and HST/WFC3. Of the 118 candidates identified based on a high [S II] $\lambda\lambda$ 6716,6731 to H$\alpha$ emission ratio, 117 show spectroscopic signatures of shock-heated gas, confirming them as SNRs---the largest uniform set of SNR spectra for any galaxy. Spectra of 22 objects with a high [O III] 5007 $\lambda$ to H$\alpha$ emission ratio, selected in an attempt to identify young ejecta-dominated SNRs like Cas A, reveal only one (previously reported) object with the broad (over 1000 km/s) emission lines characteristic of ejecta-dominated SNRs, beyond the known SN1957D remnant. The other 20 [O III]-selected candidates include planetary nebulae, compact H II regions, and one background QSO. Although our spectroscopic sample includes 22 SNRs smaller than 11 pc, none of the other objects shows broad emission lines; instead their spectra stem from relatively slow (< 200 km/s) radiative shocks propagating into the metal-rich interstellar medium of M83. With six SNe in the past century, one might expect more of M83's small-diameter SNRs to show evidence of ejecta; this appears not to be the case. We attribute their absence to several factors, including that SNRs expanding into a dense medium evolve quickly to the ISM-dominated phase, and that SNRs expanding into regions already evacuated by earlier SNe are probably very faint., Comment: 52 pages, including 8 tables and 12 figures

Synchronous programming languages emerged in the 1980s as tools for implementing reactive systems, which interact with events from physical environments and often must do so under strict timing constraints. In this report, we encode inside ATS various real-time primitives in an experimental synchronous language called Prelude, where ATS is a statically typed language with an ML-like functional core that supports both dependent types (of DML-style) and linear types. We show that the verification requirements imposed on these primitives can be formally expressed in terms of dependent types in ATS. Moreover, we modify the Prelude compiler to automatically generate ATS code from Prelude source. This modified compiler allows us to solely rely on typechecking in ATS to discharge proof obligations originating from the need to typecheck Prelude code. Whereas ATS is typically used as a general purpose programming language, we hereby demonstrate that it can also be conveniently used to support some forms of advanced static checking in languages equipped with less expressive types., Comment: In Proceedings ML/OCaml 2015, arXiv:1702.01872

Located in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC), SXP214 is an X-ray pulsar in a high mass X-ray binary system with a Be-star companion. A recent survey of the SMC under a Chandra X-ray Visionary program found the source in a transition when the X-ray flux was on a steady rise. The Lomb-Scargle periodogram revealed a pulse period of 211.49 +/- 0.42 s, which is significantly (>5sigma) shorter than the previous measurements with XMM-Newton and RXTE. This implies that the system has gone through sudden spin-up episodes recently. The pulse profile shows a sharp eclipse-like feature with a modulation amplitude of >95%. The linear rise of the observed X-ray luminosity from <~2x to 7x10^35 erg s^-1 is correlated with steady softening of the X-ray spectrum, which can be described by the changes in the local absorption from N_H ~ 10^24 to <~10^20 cm^-2 for an absorbed power-law model. The soft X-ray emission below 2 keV was absent in the early part of the observation when only the pulsating hard X-ray component was observed, whereas at later times both soft and hard X-ray components were observed pulsating. A likely explanation is that the neutron star was initially hidden in the circumstellar disk of the companion, and later came out of the disk with the accreted material that continued fueling the observed pulsation., Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures, 1 table, accepted for publication in ApJ

We present results of a complete integral field survey of the bright SNR N49 in the LMC, obtained with the WiFeS instrument mounted on the ANU 2.3m telescope at Siding Spring Observatory. From theoretical shock modelling with the new MAPPINGS 5.1 code we have, for the first time, subjected the optical Fe emission line spectrum of a supernova remnant to a detailed abundance and dynamical analysis covering 8 separate stages of ionisation. This allows us to derive the dust depletion factors as a function of ionisation stage. We have shown that there is substantial (30% - 90%) destruction of Fe-bearing dust grains in these fast shocks ($v_s \sim 250$ km/s), and we have confirmed that the dominant dust destruction is through the non-thermal sputtering and grain-grain collision mechanisms developed in a number of theoretical works., Comment: Accepted for publication in Astrophysical Journal, 14 pages, 10 figures

We present a formalization of session types in a multi-threaded lambda-calculus (MTLC) equipped with a linear type system, establishing for the MTLC both type preservation and global progress. The latter (global progress) implies that the evaluation of a well-typed program in the MTLC can never reach a deadlock. As this formulated MTLC can be readily embedded into ATS, a full-fledged language with a functional programming core that supports both dependent types (of DML-style) and linear types, we obtain a direct implementation of session types in ATS. In addition, we gain immediate support for a form of dependent session types based on this embedding into ATS. Compared to various existing formalizations of session types, we see the one given in this paper is unique in its closeness to concrete implementation. In particular, we report such an implementation ready for practical use that generates Erlang code from well-typed ATS source (making use of session types), thus taking great advantage of the infrastructural support for distributed computing in Erlang., Comment: This is the original version of the paper on supporting programming with dyadic session types in ATS

We report on the proper motions of Balmer-dominated filaments in Kepler's supernova remnant using high resolution images obtained with the Hubble Space Telescope at two epochs separated by about 10 years. We use the improved proper motion measurements and revised values of shock velocities to derive a distance to Kepler of 5.1 [+0.8, -0.7] kpc. The main shock around the northern rim of the remnant has a typical speed of 1690 km/s and is encountering material with densities of about 8 cm^-3. We find evidence for the variation of shock properties over small spatial scales, including differences in the driving pressures as the shock wraps around a curved cloud surface. We find that the Balmer filaments ahead of the ejecta knot on the northwest boundary of the remnant are becoming fainter and more diffuse. We also find that the Balmer filaments associated with circumstellar material in the interior regions of the remnant are due to shocks with significantly lower velocities and that the brightness variations among these filaments trace the density distribution of the material, which may have a disk-like geometry., Comment: Accepted for publication in the Astrophyscial Journal

We have obtained a deep 8-field XMM-Newton mosaic of M33 covering the galaxy out to the D$_{25}$ isophote and beyond to a limiting 0.2--4.5 keV unabsorbed flux of 5$\times$10$^{-16}$ erg cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$ (L${>}$4$\times$10$^{34}$ erg s$^{-1}$ at the distance of M33). These data allow complete coverage of the galaxy with high sensitivity to soft sources such as diffuse hot gas and supernova remnants. Here we describe the methods we used to identify and characterize 1296 point sources in the 8 fields. We compare our resulting source catalog to the literature, note variable sources, construct hardness ratios, classify soft sources, analyze the source density profile, and measure the X-ray luminosity function. As a result of the large effective area of XMM-Newton below 1 keV, the survey contains many new soft X-ray sources. The radial source density profile and X-ray luminosity function for the sources suggests that only $\sim$15% of the 391 bright sources with L${>}$3.6$\times$10$^{35}$ erg s$^{-1}$ are likely to be associated with M33, and more than a third of these are known supernova remnants. The log(N)--log(S) distribution, when corrected for background contamination, is a relatively flat power-law with a differential index of 1.5, which suggests many of the other M33 sources may be high-mass X-ray binaries. As part of a spectroscopic survey of supernova remnant candidates in M83 using the Gemini-South telescope and GMOS, we have discovered one object whose spectrum shows very broad lines at H$\alpha$, [O~I] 6300,6363, and [O~III] 4959,5007, similar to those from other objects classified as `late time supernovae.' Although six historical supernovae have been observed in M83 since 1923, none were seen at the location of this object. Hubble Space Telescope Wide Field Camera 3 images show a nearly unresolved emission source, while Chandra and ATCA data reveal a bright X-ray source and nonthermal radio source at the position. Objects in other galaxies showing similar spectra are only decades post-supernova, which raises the possibility that the supernova that created this object occurred during the last century but was missed. Using photometry of nearby stars from the HST data, we suggest the precursor was at least 17 $\rm M_{sun}$, and the presence of broad H$\alpha$ in the spectrum makes a type II supernova likely. The supernova must predate the 1983 VLA radio detection of the object. We suggest examination of archival images of M83 to search for evidence of the supernova event that gave rise to this object, and thus provide a precise age., Comment: 25 pages, 9 figures, accepted for ApJ

The transient ULX in M83 that went into outburst in or shortly before 2010 is still active. Our new XMM-Newton spectra show that it has a curved spectrum typical of the upper end of the high/soft state or slim-disk state. It appears to be spanning the gap between Galactic stellar-mass black holes and the ultraluminous state, at X-ray luminosities $\approx (1$-$3) \times 10^{39}$ erg s$^{-1}$ (a factor of two lower than in the 2010-2011 Chandra observations). From its broadened disk-like spectral shape at that luminosity, and from the fitted inner-disk radius and temperature, we argue that the accreting object is an ordinary stellar-mass black hole with $M \sim$$10$-$20 M_{\odot}$. We suggest that in the 2010-2011 Chandra observations, the source was seen at a higher accretion rate, resulting in a power-law-dominated spectrum with a soft excess at large radii., Comment: 11 pages, accepted by the Astrophysical Journal
