Search

Symmetry breaking in topological matter has become in recent years a key concept in condensed matter physics to unveil novel electronic states. In this work, we predict that broken inversion symmetry and strong spin–orbit coupling in trigonal PtBi2 lead to a type-I Weyl semimetal band structure. Transport measurements show an unusually robust low dimensional superconductivity in thin exfoliated flakes up to 126 nm in thickness (with Tc ∼ 275–400 mK), which constitutes the first report and study of unambiguous superconductivity in a type-I Weyl semimetal. Remarkably, a Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless transition with TBKT ∼ 310 mK is revealed in up to 60 nm thick flakes, which is nearly an order of magnitude thicker than the rare examples of two-dimensional superconductors exhibiting such a transition. This makes PtBi2 an ideal platform to study low dimensional and unconventional superconductivity in topological semimetals.

We investigate the critical properties of the spin-1 honeycomb antiferromagnet BaNi2V2O8, both below and above the ordering temperature TN using neutron diffraction and muon spin rotation measurements. Our results characterize BaNi2V2O8 as a two-dimensional (2D) antiferromagnet across the entire temperature range, displaying a series of crossovers from 2D XY to 2D XXZ and then to 2D Heisenberg behavior with increasing temperature. In particular, the extracted critical exponent of the order parameter reveals a narrow temperature regime close to TN, in which the system behaves as a 2D XY antiferromagnet. Above TN, evidence for Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless behavior driven by vortex excitations is obtained from the scaling of the correlation length. Our experimental results are in agreement with classical and quantum Monte Carlo simulations performed using microscopic magnetic model Hamiltonians for BaNi2V2O8.

2D magnets represent material systems in which magnetic order and topological phase transitions can be observed. Based on these phenomena, novel types of computing architectures and magnetoelectronic devices can be envisaged. Unlike conventional magnetic films, their magnetism is independent of the substrate and interface qualities, and 2D magnetic properties manifest even in formally bulk single crystals. However, 2D magnetism in layered materials is rarely reported often due to weak exchange interactions and magnetic anisotropy, and low magnetic transition temperatures. Here, the electron spin resonance (ESR) properties of a layered antiferromagnetic CrSBr single crystal are reported. The W-like shape angular dependence of the ESR linewidth provides a signature for room temperature spin–spin correlations and for the XY spin model. By approaching the Néel temperature the arising of competing intralayer ferromagnetic and interlayer antiferromagnetic interactions might lead to the formation of vortex and antivortex pairs. This argument is inferred by modeling the temperature dependence of the ESR linewidth with the topological Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless phase transition. These findings together with the chemical stability and semiconducting properties, make CrSBr a promising layered magnet for future magneto- and topological-electronics.

The Berezinskii-Kostelitz-Thouless (BKT) transition is the paradigmatic example of a topological phase transition without symmetry-breaking, where a quasi-ordered phase, characterized by a power law scaling of the correlation functions at low temperature, is disrupted by the proliferation of topological excitations above the critical temperature $T_{\rm BKT}$. In this letter, we consider the effect of long-range decaying couplings $\sim r^{-2-\sigma}$ on this phenomenon. After pointing out the relevance of this non trivial problem, we discuss the phase diagram, which is far richer than the corresponding short-range one. It features -- for $7/4T_{\rm BKT}$. The transition temperature $T_c$ displays unique universal features quite different from those of the traditional, short-range XY model. Given the universal nature of our findings, they may be observed in current experimental realizations in $2D$ atomic, molecular and optical quantum systems., Comment: 11 Pages, 2 Figures

We derive the self-consistent harmonic approximation for the 2D XY model with non-local interactions. The resulting equation for the variational couplings holds for any form of the spin-spin coupling as well as for any dimension. Our analysis is then specialized to power-law couplings decaying with the distance r as in order to investigate the robustness, at finite σ, of the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) transition, which occurs in the short-range limit . We propose an ansatz for the functional form of the variational couplings and show that for any 2$ ?> the BKT mechanism occurs. The present investigation provides an upper bound for the critical threshold above which the traditional BKT transition persists in spite of the non-local nature of the couplings.

A two-dimensional quantum system of dipoles, with a polarization angle not perpendicular to the plane, shows a transition from a gas to a stripe phase. We have studied the thermal properties of these two phases using the path-integral Monte Carlo (PIMC) method. By simulating the thermal density matrix, PIMC provides exact results for magnitudes of interest such as the superfluid fraction and the one-body density matrix. As it is well known, in two dimensions the superfluid-to-normal phase transition follows the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) scenario. Our results show that both the anisotropic gas and the stripe phases follow the BKT scaling laws. At fixed density and increasing the tilting angle, the transition temperature decreases in going from the gas to the stripe phase. Superfluidity in the perpendicular direction to the stripes is rather small close to the critical temperature but it becomes larger at lower temperatures, mainly close to the transition to the gas. Our results are in qualitative agreement with the supersolidity observed recently in a quasi-one-dimensional array of dipolar droplets.

We study superconductivity of twisted bilayer graphene with local and non-local attractive interactions. We obtain the superfluid weight and Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) transition temperature for microscopic tight-binding and low-energy continuum models. We predict qualitative differences between local and non-local interaction schemes which could be distinguished experimentally. In the flat band limit where the pair potential exceeds the band width we show that the superfluid weight and BKT temperature are determined by multiband processes and quantum geometry of the band., 6 pages, 4 figures + supplementary information, minor corrections in the main paper and major extensions to the supplementary in v3

We show that scale invariant scattering theory allows to exactly determine the critical points of two-dimensional systems with coupled $O(N)$ and Ising order pameters. The results are obtained for $N$ continuous and include criticality of loop gas type. In particular, for $N=1$ we exhibit three critical lines intersecting at the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless transition point of the Gaussian model and related to the $Z_4$ symmetry of the isotropic Ashkin-Teller model. For $N=2$ we classify the critical points that can arise in the XY-Ising model and provide exact answers about the critical exponents of the fully frustrated XY model., 8 pages, 4 figures, 1 table

This work is devoted to the study of a two dimensional exciton gas created in a semiconductordouble quantum wells. Thanks to an electric field applied perpendicular to these layers,the exciton constituents, namely, the electron and the hole, are confined each in one quantumwell so that excitons inherit a strong electric dipole. In this manuscript, we study the propertiesof such exciton gas trapped at very low temperature, through the photoluminescence emittedby electron-hole recombinations. We particularly study the emitted light using spectroscopic andinterferometric techniques. Thus, we explore the thermodynamics of a trapped gas and quantifyits equation of state. We unveil an important feature: the universality of the equation of state,which allows the first demonstration of thermodynamic equilibrium for excitons, and we realizea direct measurement of the excitons dipolar interaction strength. By probing both the spatialcoherence and the density of defects of the excitons photoluminescence, we show that it exists acentral region (R < 3 μm) in an exciton trap where a high degree of spatial coherence is conditionedby a decrease of the defects density. Our experiments thus provide a set of evidences pointingtowards a Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless transition for trapped 2D exciton gas.; Ces travaux sont consacrés à l'étude d'un gaz d'excitons bidimensionnel créé dans un double puits quantique de semi-conducteurs. Des travaux précédents ayant montré que ces défauts pouvaient constituer des défauts topologiques appelés vortex, nos observations constituent ainsi un ensemble de preuves de l'établissement d'un état superfluide dans la partie centrale du piège, en accord avec la théorie prédite par Berezinskii-Kosterlitz et Thouless.

We study the thermodynamics of the classical anisotropic antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model in a checkerboard lattice. The checkerboard lattice is distinguished from the antiferromagnetic square lattice (with coupling constant J) by the presence of a diagonal crossing (coupling constant J ′ ) in half of the sites. This lattice model is the direct analog of the three-dimensional pyrochlore lattice on a two-dimensional surface. Besides, we considered a single-ion anisotropy D that breaks the O ( 3 ) symmetry and contributes to planar spin fields. Since the model is two-dimensional endowed with an O ( 2 ) symmetry, a Berezinskii–Kosterlitz–Thouless (BKT) transition is expected to take place. We also investigated the BKT temperature as a function of the coupling constants J ′ and D. The problem is developed through a continuous representation given by the O ( 3 ) Nonlinear Sigma Model (NLSM). Computer simulations were also carried out, and the results were in accordance with the analytical model.

We study the effect of uncorrelated random disorder on the temperature dependence of the superfluid stiffness in the two-dimensional classical XY model. By means of a perturbative expansion in the disorder potential, equivalent to the T-matrix approximation, we provide an extension of the effective-medium-theory result able to describe the low-temperature stiffness, and its separate diamagnetic and paramagnetic contributions. These analytical results provide an excellent description of the Monte Carlo simulations for two prototype examples of uncorrelated disorder. Our findings offer an interesting perspective on the effects of quenched disorder on longitudinal phase fluctuations in two-dimensional superfluid systems., Comment: 11 pages, 5 figures

The extended Bose-Hubbard model with pure three-body local interactions is studied using the Density Matrix Renormalization Group approach. The shapes of the first two insulating lobes are discussed, and the values of the critical tunneling for which the system undergoes the quantum phase transition from insulating to superfluid phase are predicted. It is shown that stability of insulating phases, in contrast to the standard Bose-Hubbard model, is enhanced for larger fillings. It is also shown that, on the tip of the boundary of the insulating phase, the model under consideration belongs to the Berenzinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless universality class., Author version. By using the Monte Carlo simulation, we investigate the critical behavior of the 1-dimensional spin system with infinite long-range (LR) interaction r^{-(1+σ)}. By changing the value σ, we compare the results with those of the d-dimensional spin system with the nearest-neighbor(NN) interaction only. In the case of XY spin model, we obtain three different type phase transitions, i.e. the mean field type for 0 < σ < 0.5 , the σ-dependent non-trivial one for 0.5 < σ < 1 and 'Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT)-like’transition at σ = 1 as in the NN model of d > 4 , 2 < d < 4 and d = 2 , respectively. In the case of q-state clock spin model with σ = 1, we also confirm the BKT-like transition together with the similar q-dependence of the critical behavior to that of the 2-dimensional NN model. These results suggest that the infinite long-range interaction can partly compensate the role of the lattice dimensionality by increasing the effective value d from d = 1 to d = 2.

This thesis addresses the emergent electrostatics of two-dimensional, toroidal magnetic models that possess XY symmetry, providing a platform for novel investigations into the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) phase transition.The BKT transition drives the thermal dissociation of bound pairs of topological defects in many two-dimensional systems, including the two-dimensional XY model of magnetism. The XY model is closely analogous to the two-dimensional Coulomb gas, but can be simulated without computing the long-range interactions of the Coulombic system. This thesis elucidates this paradox by showing that Villain's approximation to the XY model is strictly equivalent to the Maggs-Rossetto (MR) electrostatic model when applied to the two-dimensional Coulomb gas.The mapping is used to probe the BKT transition through the application of the MR algorithm to the two-dimensional Coulomb gas. By simulating the Coulombic system, fluctuations in the winding of charges around the torus are shown to turn on at the BKT transition temperature. These topological-sector fluctuations in the electric field therefore signal the high-temperature phase of the transition.It is then shown that the effective critical exponent of Bramwell-Holdsworth (BH) theory can be measured in superfluid 4He films, which correspond to effective Coulomb gases in the limit of large but finite system size. With the Coulombic system taken as the base BKT system, it is inferred that BH theory is a general property of BKT systems., Cette thèse s'intéresse aux phénomènes électrostatiques émergents dans les modèles magnétiques toroïdaux bi-dimensionnels à symétrie XY, fournissant ainsi un support pour de plus amples recherches dans le domaine de la transition de phase Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT).Dans de nombreux systèmes bi-dimensionnels, dont le modèle bi-dimensionnel XY du magnétisme, la transition BKT contrôle la dissociation thermique de paires de défauts topologiques liés. Le modèle XY est analogue au gaz de Coulomb bi-dimensionnel, à ceci près qu'il peut être simulé sans avoir à modéliser les interactions à longue distance du système Coulombien. Cette thèse élucide ce paradoxe en démontrant que l'approximation de Villain appliquée au modèle XY est strictement équivalente au modèle électrostatique de Maggs-Rossetto (MR) appliqué au système Coulombien bi-dimensionnel.Cette équivalence est utilisée pour sonder la transition BKT par l'application de l'algorithme MR au gaz de Coulomb bi-dimensionel. En simulant le système Coulombien, il est prouvé que les fluctuations dans l'organisation des charges autour du tore sont activées à la température de transition BKT. Ces fluctuations du champ électrique indiquent ainsi la phase de haute température de la transition.Il est ensuite montré que l'exposant critique effectif de la théorie de Bramwell-Holdsworth (BH) peut être mesuré dans les films d'hélium 4 superfluide, qui correspondent à des gaz de Coulomb effectifs dans la limite de systèmes de grandes tailles finies.

We use Monte Carlo to investigate the Berezinskii–Kosterlitz–Thouless transition close to the site percolation threshold in a square lattice. Several thermodynamic quantities are calculated for lattice sizes L × L , from 16 L 640 . Our results are consistent with an infinite order transition for any value of the concentration of magnetic sites. We found that close to the critical percolation concentration, p c (0.592746), the Berezinskii–Kosterlitz–Thouless transition temperature goes to zero as T BKT ∝ ( p − p c ) 0.908 and the specific heat behaves as T s h ∝ p 1.133 .

This thesis presents the all optical production of 39K Bose-Einstein condensates. A key point in the process is the sub-Doppler cooling that allows for an efficient loading of an optical dipole trap. To this aim we use a gray molasses scheme working on the blue side of the D1 line of this alkali that leads to a high phase space density and a high number of trapped atoms in a 1550 nm optical trap. The cloud is then polarized and compressed in a crossed dipole trap before starting an efficient forced evaporation close to a Feshbach resonance. This process allows us to produce Bose-Einstein condensates every 7 seconds with our experiment. Those degenerate clouds represent the starting point of experiments aiming to study the influence of disorder on quantum gases in low dimensions. We discuss the perspectives to study of the phase diagram of the two-dimensional disordered Bose gas as well as the Anderson localization phenomenon in two dimensions and the behaviour of bright solitons in a disordered potential in a one-dimensional geometry.; Ce travail de thèse rapporte la production tout optique de condensats de Bose-Einstein de 39K. Une étape clé du processus expérimental est l’obtention d’un nuage suffisamment froid permettant le chargement direct d’un piège dipolaire de manière efficace. Notre solution est l’utilisation d’une mélasse fonctionnant dans le bleu de la raie D1 de cet alcalin conduisant à une densité dans l’espace des phases élevée et ainsi au chargement direct d’un grand nombre d’atomes dans un piège à 1550 nm. Le nuage est ensuite polarisé puis comprimé dans un piège dipolaire croisé avant d’entamer un refroidissement évaporatif efficace au voisinage d’une résonance de Feshbach. Ce processus permet la production rapide de condensats de Bose-Einstein toutes les 7 secondes sur notre expérience. Ces nuages dégénérés représentent le point de départ pour la conduite d’expériences visant à étudier les effets du désordre dans les gaz quantiques en dimensions réduites. Nous envisageons l’étude du diagramme de phase du gaz de Bose bidimensionnel désordonné, de la localisation d’Anderson en dimension deux ainsi que l’étude de l’influence du désordre sur un soliton brillant dans une géométrie unidimensionnelle.

We derive a mean-field description for two-dimensional (2D) interacting Bose gases at arbitrary temperatures. We find that genuine Bose-Einstein condensation with long-range coherence only survives at zero temperature. At finite temperatures, many-body pairing effects included in our mean-field theory introduce a finite amplitude for the pairing density, which results in a finite superfluid density. We incorporate Berenzinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) physics into our model by considering the phase fluctuations of our pairing field. This then leads to the result that the superfluid phase is only stable below the BKT temperature due to these phase fluctuations. In the weakly interacting regime at low temperature we compare our theory to previous results from perturbative calculations, renormalization group calculations as well as Monte Carlo simulations. We present a finite-temperature phase diagram of 2D Bose gases. One signature of the finite amplitude of the pairing density field is a two-peak structure in the single-particle spectral function, resembling that of the pseudogap phase in 2D attractive Fermi gases., Comment: 9 pages, 3 figures

The plateau-non-plateau transition in the antiferromagnetic-(ferromagnetic)(n) polymerized S = 1/2 XXZ chains under the magnetic field is investigated. The universality class of this transition belongs to the Brezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) type. The critical points are determined by level spectroscopy analysis of the numerical diagonalization data for 4 less than or equal to p less than or equal to 13 where p(equivalent to n + 1) is the size of a unit cell. It is found that the critical strength of ferromagnetic coupling decreases with p for small p but increases for large enough p. It is also found that the plateau for large p is wide enough for moderate values of exchange coupling so that it should be easily observed experimentally. This is in contrast to the plateaus for p = 3 chains which are narrow for a wide range of exchange coupling even away from the critical point.
