A debate in conservation genomics centers on whether to conserve small, fragmented populations independently or blend them through translocations from larger populations. Translocations of red grouse (Lagopus scotica) from Great Britain to supplement the Irish population have been suggested. We incorporate a variety of genetic datasets to address this. We used genome wide data from 23 contemporary and historic red grouse from Great Britain and Ireland. We also investigate microsatellite data, sequence candidate pigmentation genes, and assess phenotypic color variation. Genomic data indicate higher inbreeding in Irish grouse relative to an English population and significant divergence for genomic (FST = 0.095) and microsatellite (FST = 0.03) markers. Contemporary Ne was seven times smaller in the Irish population compared to the English. We identified divergent regions linked to pigmentation, immune response, and food intake. We show phenotypic differences in plumage color and sequence divergence among coding regions in the melanin pathway including MC1R (FST from genomic data of 0.3). The two populations thus appear locally adapted and this divergence between the source and target population when used for conservation translocations can swamp locally adapted alleles and/or introduce maladapted genotypes, leading to outbreeding depression. While it is important to avoid inbreeding by sustaining larger populations, our research emphasizes the need for practitioners to consider population divergence and local adaptation. We advocate against translocations between Ireland and Britain as a conservation strategy in this particular case and underscore the importance of prioritizing local populations where possible. Land‐cover change is a major driver of species extinction risk and the overarching loss of biodiversity. However, the impact of such change is nuanced, varying among species due to the mediation of life‐history traits and the timing of land transformation. While diverse studies have pinpointed ecological and life‐history attributes linked to the decline of bird species, the combined effects of past and recent land‐cover change often present a complex picture. In this study, we undertook a modelling approach to assess extinction risk in New Zealand's endemic birds based on life‐history traits and past (1996–2008) and recent (2008–2018) land‐cover change. Our results suggested specific variables driving extinction risk in endemic New Zealand birds. Notably, incubation length emerged as the most influential factor, trailed by past land‐cover change, body size and clutch size. This indicates that past land‐cover change in combination with large body sizes and slow life histories, characterized by low fecundity and extended incubation periods, collectively elevates the extinction risk of endemic birds in New Zealand. North American bird abundance has declined by 29% over the last 50 years. These continental population dynamics interact with local landscape changes to affect local bird diversity. Mitigating local declines in cities is particularly significant because (a) such declines greatly impact human–bird relationships since most people live in cities and (b) cities provide levers to create bird‐friendly habitat, such as managing yards and gardens, street trees, and urban parks. Yet, the potential for cities to modify habitats to mitigate broader bird declines remains unclear. Studies have been stymied by the difficulty of assembling mutidecadal habitat–bird population datasets. Instead, studies have substituted space for time (e.g. used habitat associations across space at one time point to project future species abundance due to changing land use), but this method may fail amidst nonstationary environments of the Anthropocene. Here, we test the validity of space‐for‐time substitutions for explaining changes in bird abundance in a North American city over the past two decades by examining the degree to which these changes are explainable by changes in local landcover at multiple spatial scales. Specifically, we use longitudinal urban bird surveys of Metro Vancouver, BC, Canada from 1997 and 2020; deep learning models of remote sensing data to classify contemporaneous landcover; out‐of‐sample prediction and boosted regression trees to identify multiple spatial scales of landcover that best explained bird abundance (i.e. optimal scale of effect for each species by each habitat); and Bayesian multispecies abundance models in Stan to determine relationships between changes in landcover and bird abundance. We found that total bird abundance declined by 26% over the last two decades. Landcover measured at both 50 m and optimal scales explained spatial variation in bird abundance, but only landcover at the optimal scale explained temporal changes, and only partially. These results suggest that space‐for‐time substitutions overemphasize habitat–bird ecological relationships, urban habitats only partially determine bird abundance, and measuring habitat at the appropriate scale is important for capturing the most relevant changes in landscapes. Survival is a key demographic parameter for long‐lived bird species as it strongly influences their population dynamics and persistence. In recent decades, several studies have focused on unravelling differential patterns of survival by sex or age in bird populations, as each group may be affected by different ecological and anthropogenic pressures. Vultures are a highly threatened group of birds where age‐ and especially sex‐dependent survival patterns have been understudied, and therefore, obtaining robust estimates and understanding which factors modulate them is crucial for developing management and conservation strategies. Here, we used a long‐term dataset (1990–2023) from a wild colony of griffon vultures Gyps fulvus in central Spain and a capture‐mark‐recapture framework to address potential sex‐ and age‐mediated patterns of apparent survival and resighting. Resighting probabilities were lower for individuals in their first year of life than for older individuals. Apparent survival probabilities increased with age and were generally higher for males than for females, particularly in subadults. Disentangling whether an unequal survival between sexes is due to female‐biased dispersal or to true mortality is necessary to understand population dynamics and to be able to implement adequate conservation management actions. Aim: Temperature significantly influences the composition and structure of biotic communities at large scales. While its role in shaping taxonomic diversity is well‐documented, its relationship with other facets of biodiversity, like phylogenetic diversity, remains poorly known. Understanding how and to which extent temperature contributes to global patterns of phylogenetic diversity compared to other biodiversity‐structuring factors is crucial for comprehending how bird assemblages are structured worldwide, predicting their response to global‐change drivers and supporting conservation policies focused on preserving bird genetic diversity and evolutionary history. Location: Worldwide. Methods: We analyse the role of temperature in predicting bird regional phylogenetic richness (PD) and divergence (MPD) worldwide, before and after controlling for the effect of species richness (SR). We also assess the shape of this relationship in different biogeographic realms and compare its explanatory power with other key biodiversity‐structuring factors such as elevation, human impact index, net primary productivity and land use diversity. Results: Our findings underscore the high significance and consistency of temperature as a key predictor positively associated with bird PD and MPD across the six main biogeographic realms, even after accounting for SR and latitude, suggesting that temperature modulates the intrinsic capacity of environments to support a diverse array of lineages. In addition, PD and MPD tended to increase at low elevations, but the human‐impact index did not effectively predict bird phylogenetic diversity at this scale. Furthermore, high PD was linked to regions with high primary productivity and high land‐use diversity, although both of these relationships were strongly mediated by SR. Conclusions: This study unveils the key role of temperature in explaining bird phylogenetic diversity worldwide over other key biodiversity‐structuring factors and points to the profound implications that climate change will have on the amount of evolutionary history held in bird assemblages, beyond species extinctions or range shifts alone. Changing drought regimes are a rising threat to biodiversity, yet their impacts on wildlife vary greatly. Acknowledging the factors associated with these consequences brings novel insights into species vulnerability resulting from extreme climatic events and facilitates effective mitigation of climate change risks. Based on 319 observations from 29 peer‐reviewed studies on birds—a well‐monitored taxonomic group—we extract the responses of demographic metrics to droughts for 204 species across eight terrestrial biomes to examine the consequences of droughts. According to relevant studies, we chose the factors potentially moderating bird demography under droughts and compiled the data for these factors from published datasets. A meta‐analysis is performed to determine the drought effect on bird demography at individual and population levels, accounting for the influence of species traits, timescale and severity of droughts, as well as biome features. The results show that droughts have an overall negative effect on bird demography, and the effect is mediated by different factors at each level. For individuals exposed to droughts, declines in demographic rates are found to be related to narrower extents of occurrence of species, and a significant overall reduction in demographic rates is identified for individuals residing in deserts and xeric shrublands. At the population level, declines in abundance or reproductive performance are generally identified for invertivores, frugivores, nectarivores and omnivores; short‐lived species with small clutch sizes also show greater susceptibilities under the impacts of droughts. Our findings additionally suggest that the demographic vulnerability of bird individuals and populations could be affected by the duration and magnitude of drought episodes. Although our results are subject to publication bias, these conclusions advance the assessment of vulnerability to extreme climatic events that used to be based on equally weighted species traits and support bird conservation by prioritizing the declining populations of species with drought‐susceptible traits. Empirical data are essential to assess the outcomes of management decisions in the context of adaptive management. We used flyway‐level population indices of a declining game bird to assess population changes after introducing hunting management measures as part of the European Union (EU)‐wide Adaptive Harvest Management mechanism (AHMM). In one flyway, a full hunting ban led to the start of population recovery; numbers increased by 25% in 2 years and the 10‐year population trend improved from “moderate decline” to “stable.” In the other flyway, harvest was only reduced (allegedly by 60% although statistics from key countries were incomplete), and numbers continued to fall (−15% decline). Our study shows positive results of the leading AHMM for a landbird in Europe and provides empirical evidence of the speed of population response and the timeframe needed for change to occur and to be detected. Empirical studies from laboratory systems and humans show that the gut microbiota is linked to host health. Similar evidence for effects on traits linked to fitness in nature is rare, not least because experimentally manipulating the gut microbiota is challenging. We isolated, characterized, and cultured a bacterial strain, Lactobacillus kimchicus APC4233, directly from a wild bird (the great tit Parus major) and provided it as a self-administered dietary supplement. We assessed the impact of the treatment on the host microbiota community, on weight, and tested whether the treatment affected a previous result linking microbiota alpha diversity to weight in nestlings. The treatment dramatically increased L. kimchicus abundance in the gut microbiota and increased alpha diversity. This effect was strongest in the youngest birds, validating earlier findings pointing to a brief developmental window when the gut microbiota are most sensitive. In time-lagged models, nestling weight was higher in the treatment birds suggesting L. kimchicus may have probiotic potential. There was also a positive time-lagged relationship between diversity and weight in control birds but not in the treatment birds, suggesting L. kimchicus helped birds compensate for low alpha diversity. We discuss why ecological context is likely key when predicting impacts of the microbiome. The manipulation of the gut microbiota with a host native strain in this wild population provides direct evidence for the role of the microbiota in the ecology and evolution of natural populations. We examined changes in bird community composition along three bioclimatic transects in Australia to test whether drivers of species turnover are consistent, rather than spatially contingent, across biologically contrasting ecosystems. We also detected potential transition zones associated with environmental thresholds and determined whether certain abiotic conditions promote a higher rate of community compositional turnover.Mainland Australia.Terrestrial birds.We applied multivariate community analysis, generalised dissimilarity modelling (GDM) and threshold indicator taxa analysis (TITAN).We observed that environmental variables are better predictors of community composition than spatial distance, which indicates that species sorting, rather than dispersal, plays a key role in structuring Australian avian communities. Annual precipitation constitutes a key driver of species turnover regardless of the analysed transect. The most humid landscapes and those with a higher tree canopy show lower spatial heterogeneity in community composition compared to those with less benign environmental conditions (e.g., dryer environments). TITAN detected significant transition points and supported the results obtained using GDM, which suggests that bird composition change along the gradients is not monotonic.Our results suggest that avian beta diversity increases with increasing environmental harshness, presumably through changes in the relative importance of stochastic versus deterministic processes. The obtained findings show that open forests and woodlands are extremely important ecosystems on this continent and deserve special attention in terms of conservation due to their vulnerability to global change. Wetland is a suitable habitat for water birds, and it enhances cultural ecosystem services. But the rapid transformation of such habitat, especially in floodplain environments, is an emerging crisis. Wetland reclamation and fragmentation are two major issues leading to poor habitat and landscape. The present paper aimed to explore the spatio-temporal changes in the suitability of wetland bird habitat, wetland landscape pattern, and the connection between them. Two wetlands, including a wetland of national importance, were taken as cases for this study. Time series Landsat and Sentinel images were taken for developing modeling parameters and Land Use Land Cover (LULC) for the years 2016 and 2020. The first transformation of wetland was accounted from the LULC maps of both years. Machine learning algorithm-based spatial models were developed for mapping the poor landscape condition of the existing wetland parts. Finally, semi-subjective analytic hierarchy approach (AHP)-based models were developed for assessing waterbird habitat suitability. Results demarcated more than 48% area belonging primarily to edges and tiny patches of wetlands under a poor state in 2020. Although the total wetland area was reduced between 2016 and 2020, the wetland area found to be highly suitable habitat increased from 25.5 to 59.44% of the total area during that period. The suitability of edge-preferring bird habitat showed a 10% increase. The increasing poverty of the landscape was caused by declining edge-preferring bird habitat suitability. From 1990 to 2020, 27% of wetlands were converted to single-cropped lands, and 5% were converted to multi-cropped agricultural land. Since the study spatially identified the potential suitable area and trend of wetland habitat transformation, this could help policymakers define suitable planning for the restoration and conservation of such promising bird habitat. Highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) viruses pose a significant threat to both poultry and wild bird populations. Migratory wild birds play a key role in the intercontinental spread of avian influenza (AI), introducing the virus into poultry populations. In response to frequent AI outbreaks in Europe, the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), at the request of the European Commission (EC), produces quarterly and annual epidemiological reports to monitor and analyse AI trends. A key component of this surveillance includes the integration of outbreak data from Member States and contributions from non‐governmental ornithological organisations like the European Bird Census Council (EBCC) and the European Union for Bird Ringing (EURING) together in a predictive spatio‐temporal risk assessment model. Previous data integration and modelling efforts led to the development of an early warning system for predicting HPAI outbreaks accessible through a publicly available online user interface: the Bird Flu Radar. This report presents an improvement of the system by expanding the species coverage and refining the existing base models behind the epidemiological model. Specifically, this report details the exploration to incorporate 12 additional wild bird species into the models, and the changes made to the base models predicting the distribution and movements of wild birds. We demonstrate the improvements respecting the existing base models while at the same time enhancing the effectiveness in predicting HPAI outbreaks and possibly mitigating negative effects in Europe by providing more accurate predictions to different stakeholders. Amid global health concerns and the constant threat of zoonotic diseases, this study delves into the diversity of circular replicase-encoding single-stranded DNA (CRESS-DNA) viruses within Chinese wild bird populations. Employing viral metagenomics to tackle the challenge of "viral dark matter," the research collected and analyzed 3,404 cloacal swab specimens across 26 bird families. Metagenomic analysis uncovered a rich viral landscape, with 67.48% of reads classified as viral dark matter, spanning multiple taxonomic levels. Notably, certain viral families exhibited host-specific abundance patterns, with Galliformes displaying the highest diversity. Diversity analysis categorized samples into distinct groups, revealing significant differences in viral community structure, particularly noting higher diversity in terrestrial birds compared to songbirds and unique diversity in migratory birds versus perching birds. The identification of ten novel Circoviridae viruses, seven Smacoviridae viruses, and 167 Genomoviridae viruses, along with 100 unclassified CRESS-DNA viruses, underscores the expansion of knowledge on avian-associated circular DNA viruses. Phylogenetic and structural analyses of Rep proteins offered insights into evolutionary relationships and potential functional variations among CRESS-DNA viruses. In conclusion, this study significantly enhances our understanding of the avian virome, shedding light on the intricate relationships between viral communities and host characteristics in Chinese wild bird populations. Worldwide, bird populations are declining dramatically. This is especially the case in intensely used agricultural areas where the application of neonicotinoid insecticides is thought to—unintendedly—cause a cascade of negative impacts throughout food webs. Additionally, there could be direct (sub‐) lethal impacts of neonicotinoids on birds, but to date there is no comprehensive quantitative assessment to confirm or rule out this possibility. Therefore, we use a meta‐analytical approach synthesising 1612 effect sizes from 49 studies and show that neonicotinoids consistently harm bird health, behaviour, reproduction, and survival. Thus, in addition to reduced food availability, the negative direct effects of exposure to neonicotinoids likely contribute to bird population declines globally. Our outcomes are pivotal to consider in future risk assessments and pesticide policy: despite localised bans, the metabolites and residues of neonicotinoids remain present in the environment and in birds and will thus have long‐lasting direct effects on both the individual and the population levels. While native grass and shrub restoration is often promoted for bird conservation, evaluations are necessary to understand the effects of habitat change on songbird vital rates and migratory stopover use. We evaluated the effects of native vegetation restoration on the species richness, productivity, and capture rate of breeding and fall migrating songbirds at the Shaker Village of Pleasant Hill, in central Kentucky, USA. From 2009 to 2022, we conducted constant effort mist netting, resulting in 8418 captures of 110 bird species. In 2012–2013, we implemented management in the study area, which began as an old field, to restore native grasses, forbs, and shrubs. Effects on the vital rates of breeding species included higher Spizella pusilla (field sparrow) and Spinus tristis (American goldfinch) productivity post restoration. Restoration of native vegetation also led to significantly higher fall capture rates for pooled cohorts of both long-distance and medium-distance migrants. Our results demonstrate that the restoration and management of native vegetation can enhance stopover habitats for fall migrating songbirds including neotropical migrants and the field sparrow, a common bird in steep decline. We recommend prioritizing areas for native grass and shrub restoration that initially lack structural heterogeneity (a well-developed grass component with diverse forbs and interspersed shrubs). Simple Summary: Each year, influenza infects millions of people, wildlife, and livestock, resulting in more than 30,000 deaths and a cost of more than USD 1 billion annually in the United States alone. In between the human flu seasons, the virus is maintained in wild bird populations, especially shorebirds and waterfowl. Much of the previous research has focused on ducks' role in this disease cycle; however, there is a growing realization that gulls may provide critical links across space due to their long annual migrations. Yet, little is known of how influenza circulates in gulls. In this work, we evaluate the prevalence of influenza in two species of gulls in Minnesota, USA. We found important differences between species and gull age classes, highlighting the variability in disease spread through wildlife populations, with consequences for how and when the virus might be transmitted to humans/livestock. Importantly, we consider not only ongoing infections, but also look for antibodies that indicate past infections, and which may provide some level of future protection from disease. We find this additional level of surveillance to be beneficial in understanding the spread of disease, especially when researchers are trying to make the most of limited sampling. Influenza A virus (IAV) is a multi-host pathogen maintained in water birds and capable of spillover into humans, wildlife, and livestock. Prior research has focused on dabbling ducks as a known IAV reservoir species, yet our understanding of influenza dynamics in other water birds, including gulls, is lacking. Here, we quantify morphological and environmental drivers of serological (antibody detection by ELISA) and virological (viral RNA detection by PCR) prevalence in two gull species: ring-billed (Larus delawarensis) and Franklin's (Leucophaeus pipixcan) gulls. Across 12 months and 10 locations, we tested over 1500 gulls for influenza viral RNA, and additionally tested antibody levels in nearly 1000 of these. We find substantial virus prevalence and a large, nonoverlapping seroprevalence, with significant differences across age and species classifications. The body condition index had minimal explanatory power to predict (sero)positivity, and the effect of the surrounding environment was idiosyncratic. Our results hint at a nontrivial relationship between virus and seropositivity, highlighting serological surveillance as a valuable counterpoint to PCR. By providing indication of both past infections and susceptibility to future infections, serosurveillance can help inform the distribution of limited resources to maximize surveillance effectiveness for a disease of high human, wildlife, and livestock concern. Environmental variation can shape the gut microbiome, but broad/large‐scale data on among and within‐population heterogeneity in the gut microbiome and the associated environmental factors of wild populations is lacking. Furthermore, previous studies have limited taxonomical coverage, and knowledge about wild avian gut microbiomes is still scarce.We investigated large‐scale environmental variation in the gut microbiome of wild adult great tits across the species' European distribution range. We collected fecal samples to represent the gut microbiome and used the 16S rRNA gene sequencing to characterize the bacterial gut microbiome.Our results show that gut microbiome diversity is higher during winter and that there are compositional differences between winter and summer gut microbiomes. During winter, individuals inhabiting mixed forest habitat show higher gut microbiome diversity, whereas there was no similar association during summer. Also, temperature was found to be a small contributor to compositional differences in the gut microbiome. We did not find significant differences in the gut microbiome among populations, nor any association between latitude, rainfall and the gut microbiome.The results suggest that there is a seasonal change in wild avian gut microbiomes, but that there are still many unknown factors that shape the gut microbiome of wild bird populations. While many effects of forest fragmentation are reasonably well understood, knowledge of interspecific interactions in fragmented ecosystems is much more limited, particularly for high diversity tropical forests. Using nearly 40 years of data from the Biological Dynamics of Forest Fragments Project in Central Amazonia, we assessed whether forest fragment area and time since isolation impact mutualistic interactions between frugivorous birds and their food resources. We used structural equation modeling to analyze the complex pathways between four main variables determining these interactions: fruiting tree abundance, frugivorous bird abundance, forest fragment area, and time since fragment isolation. Our results confirm that fragment area alters the abundance of some tree resources, with successional plant families increasing in abundance with decreasing fragment size. However, these changes do not drive alterations in the abundance of frugivorous birds. We also tested if bird species with a greater relative diet breadth are less vulnerable to forest fragmentation and found that specialist frugivores are more vulnerable to forest fragmentation immediately after isolation but are not differentially impacted within the long term. Collectively, our results demonstrate the need to further evaluate human‐driven habitat change across multiple timescales to fully understand its impacts on complex species interactions. The frequency of extreme climatic and weather events has increased since 1950 due to global changes induced by human influence. These events can have significant impacts at the individual, population, and community levels across various taxonomic groups. They can be particularly detrimental to bird populations during their breeding season, affecting specific breeding parameters. This study originated from an exceptionally rare breeding season of a resident Great Tit population recorded in spring 2002 when an unusual mortality of nestlings was observed. We quantified weather conditions (temperature, rainfall) from the end of April, a few days before we started detecting failed nests, and compared them with previous and subsequent years. In early May, when many pairs were incubating or caring for newly hatched chicks, we detected unusually low ambient temperatures and unusually high rainfall. This event likely caused that many first clutches failed completely, and that, compared with previous and subsequent years, fledging and breeding success was relatively low in those which were successful. There was also an increased proportion of replacement clutches that year. Anyway, the overall production of fledglings per breeding pair over the breeding season was 2.39, lower than other years. Although recruitment rate in 2003 was similar to other years, the lower production of fledglings in 2002 probably resulted in a decrease in the number of breeding pairs in the following years. Insectivorous birds can provide ecological and economic services by decreasing pest populations in agricultural systems, but the magnitude of effect is often debated. We modeled the capacity for birds to suppress pest population growth using a common tropical coffee pest, the coffee berry borer (CBB) (Hypothenemus hampei) as a study system. Previous field experiments show that birds play a role in suppressing CBB infestations through predation, but the degree to which birds can suppress population growth enough to control infestations is unknown since CBB are only vulnerable to predators when gravid females disperse. Using previously published data on CBB life‐stage survivability, we constructed a female‐only, daily time‐step, deterministic Leslie matrix and projected CBB population growth for a single breeding season. Our goal was to assess the plausibility of CBB suppression by birds as a function of avian energy requirements, reported avian densities on coffee farms, prey composition of avian diets, estimated a caloric value of CBB, and the initial starting population size. Our model showed CBB population growth became exponential (λdaily = 1.042) and that at low, but not medium or high population sizes, were birds able to reduce population growth by 50%. In general, birds exert predation pressure on insect populations, but the ability to control infestations is complex, and is likely dependent on the initial CBB population size. We report the first breeding occurrence of Mallard (Anas platyrhynchos) in the northern Algerian Sahara, focusing on nesting ecology in the Kef Doukhane wetland. We analyzed the influence of different environmental factors on nesting outcomes and breeding success. Our results indicate that the timing of egg laying is a critical factor influencing both breeding outcomes and the number of fledged chicks. Specifically, our results indicate that nest outcomes become less favorable as the season progresses, with later clutches having a lower probability of success. In addition, the number of successfully fledged chicks is significantly lower for later clutches. Interspecific parasitism was documented in five mixed clutches, involving Ferruginous Duck (Aythya nyroca) in four cases and Moorhen (Gallinula chloropus) in one case. Our study highlights the challenges that the hyperarid environment of the Sahara poses for breeding waterbirds. It also highlights the selection pressures exerted by both biotic factors and environmental factors, with temperature, solar radiation, and the presence of protective vegetation playing important roles. Comparative analyzes show that the timing of egg laying has similar effects in other regions, as observed at Lake Tonga further north, where Mallard breeding performance declines as the season progresses. This research not only contributes to our understanding of the nesting ecology of mallards in this unique Saharan wetland but also underscores the urgency of conservation action, especially in the face of ongoing environmental change. This study explored how increased water turbidity in open-aquaculture ponds as a result of enhanced fertilization influences piscivorous bird assemblages and predation pressure on fish. Fertilization treatments were applied to 24 earth-bottom ponds, and bird assemblages, visitation frequencies, diversities and predation rate responses were compared at species richness and across four functional group scales during six months. Bird visitation frequency, species richness and functional diversity increased around unfertilized ponds, especially for large wading birds. Fertilization and bird species richness were each negatively related to bird predation rate, whereas functional diversity was positively associated with predation rate regardless of pond fertilization. Furthermore, predation rate reduced in response to pairwise interactive effects of fertilization and functional group identity, but increased with fertilization's respective interaction with functional diversity and visitation frequency. Contrastingly, species richness showed no interactive effect with fertilization or visitation rate. Thus, in applying enhanced pond water fertilization as a mitigation measure for controlling and tracking damage impact caused by piscivorous birds, it is potentially more beneficial to adopt a bird functional rather than species-based approach, given the observed higher sensitivity of functional diversity in predicting predation rates. In order to solve the problem of the low end positioning accuracy of large hydraulic rock drilling robotic arms due to machining error and the working environment, this paper proposes an end positioning error compensation method based on an Improved Secretary Bird Optimization Algorithm (ISBOA) optimized Back Propagation (BP) neural network. Firstly, the good point set strategy is used to initialize the secretary bird population position to make the initial population distribution more uniform and accelerate the convergence speed of the algorithm. Then, the ISBOA is used to optimize the initial weights and biases of the BP neural network, which effectively overcomes the defect of the BP neural network falling into a local optimum. Finally, by establishing the mapping relationship between the joint value of the robot arm and the end positioning error, the error compensation is realized to improve the positioning accuracy of the rock drilling robot arm. The experimental results show that the average positioning error of the rock drilling robotic arm is reduced from 187.972 mm to 28.317 mm, and the positioning accuracy is improved by 84.94%, which meets the engineering requirements. Background: Artificial reservoirs are alternative habitats for bird diversity, and knowledge of the diversity and abundance of bird species contribute to the management of the ecosystem. This study was conducted to investigate the species diversity and abundance of birds in Mai-Nigus reservoir and its surrounding semi-forest from July 2022 to March 2023. Point count method with a total of fifteen count stations at an interval of 50 m radius was used to study the diversity and abundance of bird species in the semi-forest habitat while total count employed on the reservoir. Results: A total of 123 bird species comprising endemic and globally threatened species were identified. Order Passeriformes had the highest number of species followed by Charadriiformes and Pelecaniformes. Family Scolopacidae was the most abundant followed by Ardeidae, Ploceidae and Anatidae. Bird species richness and abundance were not significantly varied across seasons and habitats (P > 0.05). The highest species diversity (H´=3.96) were recorded in the Semi-forest during the wet season, whereas the least was recorded from reservoir during the dry season (H´=2.66). The highest and lowest species evenness of birds was recorded in Semi-forest (E = 0.725) and reservoir (E = 0.448) during the dry season, respectively. Most birds that inhabited the area had frequent relative abundance followed by uncommon and common species. Conclusion: Mai-Nigus reservoir and surrounding habitat host high bird diversity and this requires critical conservation concerns for the long-term survival of birds. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Hatching failure affects up to 77% of eggs laid by threatened bird species, yet the true prevalence and drivers of egg fertilization failure versus embryo mortality as underlying mechanisms of hatching failure are unknown. Here, using ten years of data comprising 4,371 eggs laid by a population of a threatened bird, the hihi (Notiomystis cincta), we investigate the relative importance of infertility and embryo death as drivers of hatching failure and explore population-level factors associated with them. We show that of the 1,438 eggs that failed to hatch (33% of laid eggs) between 2010 and 2020, 83% failed due to embryo mortality, with the majority failing in the early stages of embryonic development. In the most comprehensive estimates of infertility rates in a wild bird population to date, we find that fertilization failure accounts for around 17% of hatching failure overall and is more prevalent in years where the population is smaller and more male biased. Male embryos are more likely to die during early development than females, but we find no overall effect of sex on the successful development of embryos. Offspring fathered by within-pair males have significantly higher inbreeding levels than extra-pair offspring; however, we find no effect of inbreeding nor extra-pair paternity on embryo mortality. Accurately distinguishing between infertility and embryo mortality in this study provides unique insight into the underlying causes of reproductive failure over a long-term scale and reveals the complex risks of small population sizes to the reproduction of threatened species. Citizen science data on biodiversity has experienced significant growth, largely driven by advancements in technology that facilitate data sharing. In recent years, mobile applications have provided a substantial boost to both the collection and sharing of this data. While this accessible information is undoubtedly valuable, we must consider the numerous biases present in this data when used for high-quality research. In this study, we analyse citizen science data for the birds of the Iberian Peninsula, comprising over 23 million unique records after filtering for duplicates (i.e., instances where the same observation was uploaded more than once). Using a 10 × 10 km square grid, we present information on well-surveyed cells (completeness) as well as temporal, taxonomic, geographical, and land use coverages. We found that the completeness of information is generally high, with better coverage around densely populated areas such as major cities and coastal regions, as well as popular birding destinations, which are frequently visited. The Mediterranean ecoregion and wetlands exhibit the highest levels of surveying. Furthermore, we observed an increase in temporal coverage since the 1980s and broad taxonomic coverage across all bird orders in the Iberian region. Our results underscore the utility of citizen science for many locations, as expressed in 10 × 10 km cells. However, they also highlight the inadequate data completeness across part of the territory, particularly in forested or sparsely inhabited areas. These findings not only identify cells suitable for bird diversity or conservation studies but also indicate areas where citizen-driven bird recording efforts should be encouraged. Pathogen epidemics are key threats to human and wildlife health. Across systems, host protection from pathogens following initial exposure is often incomplete, resulting in recurrent epidemics through partially-immune hosts. Variation in population-level protection has important consequences for epidemic dynamics, but how acquired protection influences inter-individual heterogeneity in susceptibility and its epidemiological consequences remains understudied. We experimentally investigated whether prior exposure (none, low-dose, or high-dose) to a bacterial pathogen alters host heterogeneity in susceptibility among songbirds. Hosts with no prior pathogen exposure had little variation in protection, but heterogeneity in susceptibility was significantly augmented by prior pathogen exposure, with the highest variability detected in hosts given high-dose prior exposure. An epidemiological model parameterized with experimental data found that heterogeneity in susceptibility from prior exposure more than halved epidemic sizes compared with a homogeneous population with identical mean protection. However, because infection-induced mortality was also greatly reduced in hosts with prior pathogen exposure, reductions in epidemic size were smaller than expected in hosts with prior exposure. These results highlight the importance of variable protection from prior exposure and/or vaccination in driving population-level heterogeneity and epidemiological dynamics. Author summary: Individuals in a population are often highly variable in whether or not they get sick during an outbreak. This variability between individuals has important consequences for how widely a disease can spread. Therefore, it is useful to understand what drives the amount of variability in susceptibility present in populations as a whole. Because individuals in a population can have quite variable immune responses to the same type and dose of pathogen infection, one possibility is that populations of individuals with acquired immune protection from prior pathogen exposure are actually more variable in their susceptibility than populations of individuals with no previous pathogen infection. We tested this possibility using a songbird disease system as a model. We found that populations of birds for which we had generated immune protection by exposing them to a bacterial pathogen were far more variable in their susceptibility than birds that had never been infected before. Exploring the evolutionary architecture of female sexual traits and their potential evolvability is important to understand their possible role as postmating sexual signals. Egg colouration has been proposed to be one of these postmating sexual signals, honestly advertising female quality in birds, especially in blue-green laying species. In this study, we used an animal model in a Bayesian framework to estimate the evolvability of multiple descriptors of blue-green egg colouration and egg size in a wild long-term monitored population of spotless starlings (Sturnus unicolor). Our results show low to moderate heritability (h2 = 0.31–0.44) for 3 egg colour descriptors (blue-green chroma, chroma, and lightness) and egg size. Using the coefficient of additive genetic variance (CVA) and the evolvability (IA) as proxies of evolutionary potential of all components of this trait, we found low values of CVA for all these variables, suggesting a small evolutionary potential of these phenotypic traits, contrasting to previous results reported in another blue-green egg laying species. Our results indicate a modest raw genetic material of this trait on which sexual selection can act upon and, therefore, a small probability for these traits to respond easily to selection. Grassland bird populations in the Mediterranean lowlands have declined dramatically over the past few decades. This decline is due to a combination of factors, including changes in land use and farming practices as well as the impacts of climate change. In particular, more intensive agricultural methods have played a significant role in this reduction. However, in the higher-altitude uplands of the region, traditional practices like pastoralism and rotational low-intensity farming are still common, and these areas continue to support substantial populations of several threatened grassland bird species. Simple Summary: Zoonoses are a growing threat to human health. Therefore, their surveillance is especially important in densely populated areas such as cities. Modern cities are, in fact, urban agglomerations where the population lives in urban centers and surrounding towns interspersed with agricultural land, forest patches and parks, where it is common to come into contact with several animal species, some of which may act as vectors of zoonoses. In this work, we evaluated, using molecular techniques, the zoonotic parasites carried by urban birds (White Stork, Lesser Black-backed Gull and two species of exotic parakeets), with the aim of better understanding the zoonotic risk that their faeces may pose. We detected a total of 23 genera of eukaryotic parasites, including six that are potentially harmful to human health: three fungi, one protist, and two nematodes. Our results show that the faeces of these four bird species could pose a risk to human health associated with the zoonotic parasites present in them. This should be taken into account when developing management plans for urban populations of these bird species. Synanthropic birds might play an important role as reservoirs of many zoonotic endoparasites; however, little information is available on many parasites and their prevalence. Here, we use an approach based on targeted metagenomic detection through the use of DNA metabarcoding of faecal samples to screen for circulating parasites in alien parakeets (Myiopsitta monachus and Psittacula krameri) and urban landfill-feeding storks (Ciconia ciconia) and gulls (Larus fuscus). We focus especially on potentially zoonotic parasites, with the aim of better understanding the zoonotic risk that these birds' faeces may pose. We detected a total of 23 genera of eukaryotic parasites: six fungi, three protists, five nematodes, two cestodes and seven trematodes. Among them, six stood out for their relevance to human health: Cryptococcus spp., Aspergillus spp. and Candida spp. (fungi); Cryptosporidium spp. (a protist); and Ascaris spp. and Halicephalobus spp. (nematodes). In parakeets, we detected Cryptococcus spp. and Ascaris spp., the latter being detected in 10–20% of the samples. In the White Stork and the Lesser Black-backed Gull, we found a high prevalence of Aspergillus spp. (in 15% and 50% of the samples, respectively) and Candida spp. (in 63% and 82% of the samples, respectively), and the presence of Cryptosporidium spp. in 10% of the samples. We detected Halicephalobus spp. in one gull sample (2%). Our results show that synanthropic birds may act as vectors and reservoirs of zoonotic parasites and their faeces could pose a risk to human health associated with the zoonotic parasites present in them. The virulent form of Avian paramyxovirus-1 (APMV-1), commonly known as Newcastle Disease Virus (NDV), is a pathogen with global implications for avian health, affecting both wild and domestic bird populations. In Pakistan, recurrent Newcastle Disease (caused by NDV) outbreaks have posed significant challenges to the poultry industry. Extensive surveillance in Pakistan over 20 years has demonstrated a dynamic genetic diversity among circulating APMV-1 strains, emphasizing the potential necessity for customized vaccination strategies and continuous surveillance. In this study, 13 APMV-1-positive isolates harboring four different APMV-1 genotypes circulating throughout Pakistan were identified. These included the highly virulent genotypes VII and XIII, genotype XXI, commonly associated with Columbiformes, and genotype II, hypothesized to have been detected following vaccination. These findings underscore the intricate interplay of mutational events and host-immune interactions shaping the evolving NDV landscape. This study advances our understanding of the evolutionary dynamics of APMV-1 in Pakistan, highlighting the need for tailored vaccination strategies and continuous surveillance to enable effective APMV-1 management in avian populations, further emphasizing the importance of globally coordinated strategies to tackle APMV-1, given its profound impact on wild and domestic birds. Geographical distribution and diversity patterns of bird species are influenced by climate change. The Rouget's rail (Rougetius rougetii) is a ground‐dwelling endemic bird species distributed in Ethiopia and Eritrea. It is a near‐threatened species menaced by habitat loss, one of the main causes of population declines for bird species. The increasing effects of climate change may further threaten the species' survival. So far, the spatial distribution of this species is not fully documented. With this study, we develop current potential suitable habitat and predict the future habitat shift of R. rougetii based on environmental data such as bioclimatic variables, population density, vegetation cover, and elevation using 10 algorithms. We evaluated the importance of environmental factors in shaping the bird's distribution and how it shifts under climate change scenarios. We used 182 records of R. rougetii from Ethiopia and nine bioclimatic, population density, vegetation cover, and elevation variables to run the 10 model algorithms. Among 10 algorithms, eight were selected for ensembling models according to their predictive abilities. The current suitable habitats for R. rougetii were predicted to cover an area of about 82,000 km2 despite being highly fragmented. The model suggested that temperature seasonality (bio4), elevation, and mean daily air temperatures of the driest quarter (bio9) contributed the most to delimiting suitable areas for this species. R. rougetii is sensitive to climate change associated with elevation, which leads shrinking distribution of suitable areas. The projected spatial and temporal pattern of habitat loss of R. rougetii suggests the importance of climate change mitigation and implementing long‐term conservation and management strategies for this threatened endemic bird species. Rougetius rougetii is a near‐threatened, ground‐dwelling endemic bird species distributed in Ethiopia and Eritrea, and the spatial distribution of this species is not fully documented. With the help of an ensembling model and the current distribution, which covers an area of ~82,000 km2, we develop potential suitable habitats now and forecast future habitat shifts based on environmental data. The Ferruginous Hawk (Buteo regalis) is a raptor of conservation concern in much of its range. Population trend estimates from Breeding Bird Surveys and migration counts for this species are often contradictory and of low credibility. Therefore, we used Christmas Bird Count data to assess population trends for Ferruginous Hawks that winter in California, USA. Evidence suggests that the birds breeding in southeastern Washington and northeastern Oregon may represent a metapopulation that winters almost exclusively in California. Data for the 25-yr period from Count Year 98 (winter 1997–1998) to Count Year 122 (winter 2021–2022) from 22 California Christmas Bird Count circles in the core winter range of Ferruginous Hawks showed a significant positive trend. This positive trend contrasts with the continent-wide negative trends observed for most grassland/open country bird species and is surprising given ongoing declines of this species' preferred winter habitat in California during this same period. We discuss potential explanations that may account for these differences, including the possibility that the California-wintering Ferruginous Hawks include a large proportion of birds breeding outside of southeastern Washington and northeastern Oregon. This article discusses a study on the lifespans of Neotropical forest landbirds, which has been a topic of interest for scientists for a long time. The study used a 45-year dataset from central Panama to determine the longevity of 47 species. The oldest recorded individual was an 18-year-old Rufous Motmot, and most species had a lifespan of at least 7 years. The study also explored the relationship between longevity and factors such as body mass, diet, and sociality. Surprisingly, there was no correlation between body mass and longevity, and some of the smallest species actually lived the longest. Montane species are generally predicted to respond to climate change via upslope movement. Elevational range shifts of birds rarely have been examined in arid regions. Here, we examine shifts in the elevational distributions of breeding birds from two regions of the Great Basin, a desert in the western USA, over 10 to 20 years. We collected data annually from 2001 to 2020, a relatively long and consistent time series that is uncommon in research on distributional shifts. We used single‐species occupancy models of 32 bird species to examine shifts along the full elevational gradient (1650–3200 m a.s.l.) and within the lowest and highest edges (25%) of the gradient. We then conducted simulations to test whether population stochasticity could confound inferences about shifts. We examined whether temperature, precipitation, and primary productivity (normalized difference vegetation index) were associated with occupancy and shifts. The elevational distributions of 23 species shifted, and simulations indicated that shifts in the distributions of 18 species were unlikely to be stochastic. The majority of shifts in the western Great Basin were downslope, whereas those in the central Great Basin were upslope. More shifts occurred at the edges of the elevational gradient than along the full gradient. Elevational shifts lacked a consistent climate‐response signal, but those of some species appeared to follow changes in primary productivity. We found regional differences in elevational shifts and climate associations, and our work suggests that these desert bird populations may be relatively resilient to climate change. Every night during spring and autumn, the mass movement of migratory birds redistributes bird abundances found on the ground during the day. However, the connection between the magnitude of nocturnal migration and the resulting change in diurnal abundance remains poorly quantified. If departures and landings at the same location are balanced throughout the night, we expect high bird turnover but little change in diurnal abundance (stream‐like migration). Alternatively, migrants may move simultaneously in spatial pulses, with well‐separated areas of departure and landing that cause significant changes in the abundance of birds on the ground during the day (wave‐like migration). Here, we apply a flow model to data from weather surveillance radars (WSR) to quantify the daily fluxes of nocturnally migrating birds landing and departing from the ground, characterizing the movement and stopover of birds in a comprehensive synoptic scale framework. We corroborate our results with independent observations of the diurnal abundances of birds on the ground from eBird. Furthermore, we estimate the abundance turnover, defined as the proportion of birds replaced overnight. We find that seasonal bird migration chiefly resembles a stream where bird populations on the ground are continuously replaced by new individuals. Large areas show similar magnitudes of take‐off and landing, coupled with relatively small distances flown by birds each night, resulting in little change in bird densities on the ground. We further show that WSR‐inferred landing and take‐off fluxes predict changes in eBird‐derived abundance turnover rate and turnover in species composition. We find that the daily turnover rate of birds is 13% on average but can reach up to 50% on peak migration nights. Our results highlight that WSR networks can provide real‐time information on rapidly changing bird distributions on the ground. The effects of volcanic eruptions on ecosystems, particularly on oceanic islands, have been widely studied because of their important role in land formation, climate patterns and biological processes. Although these phenomena can lead to habitat loss, population decline and even species extinction, their effects on isolated populations, especially vertebrates, are not fully understood due to the paucity of pre-eruption data and in situ observations. Here, we assess the impact of the recent eruption of the Tajogaite volcano in La Palma, Canary Islands, on a unique population of red-billed choughs (Pyrrhocorax pyrrhocorax), an emblematic bird species that symbolises the natural heritage of the island. Pre- and post-eruption surveys showed that the eruption did not significantly affect the overall size or distribution of the population, although the number of choughs decreased after the eruption in the northern and central roosts, and increased in the southern ones. Although the eruption resulted in the release of toxic gases and ash, the observed changes in chough distribution and numbers could be attributed to environmental variability and the use of different foraging areas by individuals rather than direct effects of the volcano. The high mobility of choughs may have allowed them to avoid the negative effects of the volcano in the immediate aftermath of the eruption. Future studies are recommended to assess the long-term effects of volcanic ash on feeding habitats and the possible accumulation of contaminants, such as heavy metals, in the food chain. This will allow not only to monitor the presence of these compounds in ecosystems, but also to understand the response of this species to environmental changes and ensure its conservation. Coastal wetlands are one of the most threatened ecosystems due to, firstly, their relative rarity and, secondly, the strong human interest in these coastal sites for infrastructure development, and recreation. These coastal wetlands also serve as important migration stopover sites for a range of waterbirds. There is great international interest in mitigating the negative effects of human land development and in restoring degraded habitats. I evaluated the response of one waterbird community to the mitigation action implemented during road expansion in an important waterbird coastal habitat in central Norway. Using a novel mitigation method, the shoreline was moved seawards to allow space for a continued shoreline habitat and the extended road. By weekly monitoring the waterbird community during spring and autumn migration periods (n = 7 of each), I found similar biodiversity, evenness, and abundance of geese, dabbling ducks, diving ducks, gulls, and waders when data for the whole wetland were used. However, after construction waders were partially displaced from the zone closest to the road to a zone further away. For some groups of birds, shoreline translocation can be a fruitful mitigation action aiming to reduce the negative effects of infrastructure expansion in coastal areas. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In 2022, a severe outbreak of disease caused by clade 2.3.4.4b Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) H5N1 virus resulted in unprecedented mortality among wild birds in eastern Canada. Tens of thousands of birds were reported sick or dead, prompting a comprehensive assessment of mortality spanning the breeding season between April 1 and September 30, 2022. Mortality reports were collated from federal, Indigenous, provincial, and municipal agencies, the Canadian Wildlife Health Cooperative, and other nongovernmental organizations, universities, and citizen science platforms. A scenario analysis was conducted to refine mortality estimates, accounting for potential double counts from multiple sources under a range of spatial and temporal overlaps. Correcting for double counting, HPAI is estimated to have caused 40,391 wild bird mortalities in eastern Canada during the spring and summer of 2022; however, this figure underestimates total mortality as it excludes unreported deaths on land and at sea. Seabirds and sea ducks, long‐lived species that are slow to recover from perturbations, accounted for 98.7% of estimated mortalities. Our study provides estimates of bird mortality, with Northern Gannets (Morus bassanus; 25,669), Common Murres (Uria aalge; 8133), and American Common Eiders (Somateria mollissima dresseri; 1894) exhibiting the highest mortality figures. We then compare these mortality estimates with recent population estimates and trends and make an initial assessment of whether biologically meaningful population‐level impacts are possible. Specifically, we focus on the Northern Gannet, a species that has suffered significant global mortality, and two harvested species, Common Murre and American Common Eider, to inform management decisions. Our analysis suggests population‐level impacts in eastern Canada are possible for Northern Gannets and American Common Eiders, but are unlikely for Common Murres. This study demonstrates a comprehensive approach to assessing mortality and underscores the urgent need for further research to understand the broader ecological ramifications of the HPAI outbreak on wild bird populations. Forest fragmentation is one of the main drivers of global biodiversity loss leading to the isolation of wildlife populations. This study focuses on understanding the role of restoration corridors as a strategy promoting resilience and viability of mammal and bird populations in a fragmented landscape in Colombia. We installed 98 camera-trap stations − 8497 camera-trap days - in four different land cover categories: (1) forest fragments, (2) natural corridors, (3) stablished corridors and (4) pastures. We evaluated if restoration corridors do promote connectivity for large vertebrates and recover species richness and functional diversity lost in anthropogenically transformed pastures. We used indices of taxonomic and functional diversity and a non-metric multidimensional scaling to evaluate the influence of land cover over mammal and bird communities. Both, species richness and functional diversity have higher values in forests, followed by natural corridors and corridors and lower values in open pastures. Differences in species composition were greater between forests and pastures, and species composition of restoration corridors begins to resemble that of riparian forests and forest fragments. Our results provide initial evidence on the role of restoration corridors as an efficient strategy aimed to recover biodiversity and functional diversity in pervasively fragmented landscapes. Ageing affects almost all aspects of life and therefore is an important process across societies, human and non-human animal alike. This article introduces new research exploring the complex interplay between individual-level ageing and demography, and the consequences this interplay holds for the structure and functioning of societies across various natural populations. We discuss how this Special Issue provides a foundation for integrating perspectives from evolutionary biology, behavioural ecology and demography to provide new insights into how ageing shapes individuals' social behaviour and social associations, and how this in turn impacts social networks, social processes (such as disease or information transfer) and fitness. Through examining these topics across taxa, from invertebrates to birds and mammals, we outline how contemporary studies are using natural populations to advance our understanding of the relationship between age and society in innovative ways. We highlight key emerging research themes from this Special Issue, such as how sociality affects lifespan and health, the genetic and ecological underpinnings of social ageing and the adaptive strategies employed by different species. We conclude that this Special Issue underscores the importance of studying social ageing using diverse systems and interdisciplinary approaches for advancing evolutionary and ecological insights into both ageing and sociality more generally. Humans become more selective with whom they spend their time, and as a result, the social networks of older humans are smaller than those of younger ones. In non-human animals, processes such as competition and opportunity can result in patterns of declining sociality with age. While there is support for declining sociality with age in mammals, evidence from wild bird populations is lacking. Here, we test whether sociality declines with age in a wild, insular bird population, where we know the exact ages of individuals. Using 6 years of sociality data, we find that as birds aged, their degree and betweenness decreased. The number of same-age birds still alive also decreased with age. Our results suggest that a longitudinal change in sociality with age may be, in part, an emergent effect of natural changes in demography. This highlights the need to investigate the changing costs and benefits of sociality across a lifetime. To thrive in urban environments, birds need to make behavioral adjustments to tolerate the disturbances and threats that are imposed by these environments. Birds constantly need to adjust their assessment of predation risk to maximize their fitness in these environments. Such adjustments can be measured through different reaction distances to an approaching predator, such as flight initiation distance (FID) and distance fled (DF). Using these variables, we compared the perceived risk of predation of 12 bird species in formal (i.e., public parks; FGS) and informal greenspaces (i.e., vacant lots; IGS) in a Latin American city. We also compared these behavioral responses between native and exotic species and explored whether different factors, such as predator abundance, disturbance level (e.g., noise, pedestrians), and other reaction distances (e.g., buffer distance), could help us explain an eventual difference of perceived risk of predation in both habitats. We measured 199 distances in individual birds, of which 104 were obtained in FGS and 95 in IGS. Birds in FGS had significantly shorter FID and DF than birds in IGS, but data variability was higher in IGS than in FGS. This suggests that birds perceive FGS as safer habitats than IGS, and/or that birds in FGS are more tolerant to the presence of humans. Exotic birds were bolder (i.e., shorter FID) than native birds, but native birds had more variable FID and DF than exotic birds, suggesting that native birds could eventually become as successful as exotic birds in colonizing urban environments. The FID was better explained by other reaction distances (i.e., starting and buffer distances) than by the abundance of predators or intensity of disturbance. These findings agree with the "flush early and avoid the rush" hypothesis and with the high availability of resources in both habitats. Our results suggest that IGS can provide refuge to fearful birds and at the same time be a source of bolder behavioral phenotypes allowing bird populations to scale their tolerance to urbanization.
