2. An Approach for Improving Automatic Mouth Emotion Recognition

Abstract

The study proposes and tests a technique for automated emotion recognition through mouth detection via Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN), meant to be applied for supporting people with health disorders with communication skills issues (e.g. muscle wasting, stroke, autism, or, more simply, pain) in order to recognize emotions and generate real-time feedback, or data feeding supporting systems. The software system starts the computation identifying if a face is present on the acquired image, then it looks for the mouth location and extracts the corresponding features. Both tasks are carried out using Haar Feature-based Classifiers, which guarantee fast execution and promising performance. If our previous works focused on visual micro-expressions for personalized training on a single user, this strategy aims to train the system also on generalized faces data sets.

Abstract

In this project we propose a new approach for emotion recognition using web-based similarity (e.g. confidence, PMI and PMING). We aim to extract basic emotions from short sentences with emotional content (e.g. news titles, tweets, captions), performing a web-based quantitative evaluation of semantic proximity between each word of the analyzed sentence and each emotion of a psychological model (e.g. Plutchik, Ekman, Lovheim). The phases of the extraction include: text preprocessing (tokenization, stop words, filtering), search engine automated query, HTML parsing of results (i.e. scraping), estimation of semantic proximity, ranking of emotions according to proximity measures. The main idea is that, since it is possible to generalize semantic similarity under the assumption that similar concepts co-occur in documents indexed in search engines, therefore also emotions can be generalized in the same way, through tags or terms that express them in a particular language, ranking emotions. Training results are compared to human evaluation, then additional comparative tests on results are performed, both for the global ranking correlation (e.g. Kendall, Spearman, Pearson) both for the evaluation of the emotion linked to each single word. Abstract

Headwater springs and streams often occur in relatively remote areas, reducing their exposure to human influences and thus increasing their collective capacity to support high biodiversity. Their aquatic macroinvertebrate communities can include species of conservation interest, some of which are specialists associated with groundwater inputs, low water temperature or temporary flow. However, the inaccessibility of some spring and stream networks has left their communities poorly characterized, limiting our capacity to implement effective conservation strategies. We characterized the biodiversity and conservation value of macroinvertebrate communities in a network of 51 relatively inaccessible and unimpacted headwater spring and stream sites spanning multiple catchments in a single landscape type: the chalk downland of south England. At each site, we kick sampled macroinvertebrate communities and recorded environmental variables, including flow permanence. To represent each community, we calculated taxa richness, coverage‐adjusted Hill‐Shannon diversity, the local contribution to beta diversity, and an index of richness and species rarity. We used the latter three metrics to rank sites based on their biodiversity and conservation value and analyzed relationships between metrics and environmental variables. We found specialists of springs, cold waters, groundwaters and temporary flow regimes, including rare species of conservation value. Some metrics responded to environmental variables, but top‐ranking sites had highly variable environmental characteristics. We highlight the value of individual headwater streams with contrasting characteristics as contributors to ecologically heterogeneous site networks. Our results can inform landscape‐scale management strategies that protect headwaters as refuges that support biodiverse communities, including rare species, as they adapt to global change. Abstract

Il termine moderazione è riferibile a una indicazione morale e pure a un imperativo giuridicamente fondato e traducibile in una pratica, economica e sociale, orientata a un utile impiego delle risorse. Questo ha significato oggi come lo ha avuto per i secoli terminali del Medioevo. È stato proprio in quel periodo che, attorno alla parola moderazione, si è venuta a formare una mentalità, un tendere culturale teorizzato ma anche praticato. Quanto accaduto, inoltre, è verosimilmente da mettere in relazione a quella sensibilità socio-economica che è stata all’origine della Modernità e dello sviluppo delle teorie capitaliste. Nell’illustrazione del legame tra l’etica protestante e Capitalismo, Max Weber sosteneva che questa relazione è si cogliibile nella religione ma anche nel dato pratico, nella mentalità degli uomini, una mentalità basata sul risparmio come virtù, sull’oculata spesa e sull’investimento accorto. Elementi certamente moderni, ma che fondano la loro origine nel Medioevo. La ricerca presentata in questo lavoro ha dato conto di questo, disponendo il materiale documentario entro tre settori di indagine: il primo è stato quello riguardante la riflessione culturale e filosofica sul tema; il secondo è stato dedicato alle leggi suntuarie e, dunque, dell’uso politico della moderazione; il terzo settore ha permesso di calare l’analisi nella concretezza dei fatti, ovvero a quello che sono state interpretate come le pratiche della moderazione. Nello specifico il lavoro si è articolato nel modo seguente. Nel primo capitolo si è tracciato un quadro complessivo, anche se necessariamente sommario ma soddisfacente, delle principali posizioni prodotte sul tema moderazione, e si è verificato come questo tema sia stato oggetto di studio in diversi produttori di pensiero. Ne è emerso che la moderazione, da un punto di vista teorico, consiste in una serie di indicazioni comportamentali circa le apparenze e il modo di gestire il denaro. Nel secondo capitolo, invece, è stato messo in evidenza che le leggi suntuarie, specificatamente nella loro parte proemiale, formalizzano in modo inequivocabile l’invito alla moderazione e successivamente, nel corpo della legge, indicando quanto concesso e quanto vietato, formalizzano la misura della moderazione. Simili documenti, quindi, vengono a costituire lo snodo centrale, sono la cornice normativa in seno alla moderazione, della quale ne forniscono una misura. Il terzo e ultimo capitolo, è stato costruito secondo un sistema binario. Inizialmente si è esaminato non tanto il concreto pensiero, ma semmai la concretezza di una realtà definibile a partire da diversi strati di ricchezza e di patrimonialità che una serie di fonti, fiscali e giuridiche, hanno permesso di enucleare. Tra questi livelli si è poi distinto un grado più altro, uno più basso e, ovviamente, uno mediano attestante l’esistenza di una moderazione oggettiva, che è stata definita medietà. Nella seconda parte del terzo capitolo, si è anche approfondito come gli uomini abbiano interpretato il carattere astratto della moderazione nella concretezza della vita quotidiana. Per meglio mettere a fuoco questo aspetto, si sono compiuti una serie di ‘esercizi’ di scavo documentario che hanno dato concreta leggibilità alla moderazione. Studiando alcuni casi di consumi famigliari si è verificato che la moderazione, oltre a essere la condizione di coloro che strutturalmente si situano a un livello sociale intermedio, è anche la scelta auto-limitante di farsi modesti circa i consumi. Tale scelta, non sempre e necessariamente legata alla morale, né perché imposta dal legislatore, è stata una forma di auto- dominio con la quale, anziché immobilizzare le ricchezze in beni sfarzosi che se monumentalizzati recano piacere personale ma non fruttano, ha consentito all’uomo di scegliere di fare un uso moderato e oculato delle proprie sostanze in vista di un progetto che, proprio perché a favore del benessere della comunità e non del singolo, si è caratterizzato per una forte componente civica. Sulla base di queste argomentazioni, è sostenibile la tesi che alla fine del Medioevo la moderazione non è stata solo una teoria ma pure un insieme di pratiche concrete in senso alle quali alcuni hanno scelto di anteporre un progetto e dei valori precisi al principio del piacere e al gusto per l’ostentazione. Aspetti, questi ultimi, che certamente caratterizzano la Modernità e il periodo capitalista, ma che fondano le loro basi nei secoli terminali del Medioevo.

Abstract

EVALITA is a periodic evaluation campaign of Natural Language Processing (NLP) and speech tools for the Italian language. The general objective of EVALITA is to promote the development of language and speech technologies for the Italian language, providing a shared framework where different systems and approaches can be evaluated in a consistent manner. The diffusion of shared tasks and shared evaluation practices is a crucial step towards the development of resources and tools for NLP and speech sciences. The good response obtained by EVALITA, both in the number of participants and in the quality of results, showed that it is worth pursuing such goals for the Italian language. As a side effect of the evaluation campaign, both training and test data are available to the scientific community as benchmarks for future improvements. EVALITA is an initiative of the Italian Association for Computational Linguistics (AILC) and it is endorsed by the Italian Association for Artificial Intelligence (AI*IA) and the Italian Association for Speech Sciences (AISV).

49. «AREMO GRANDISSIMO BISOGNO DE...» LA «ROBBA» NELLE LETTERE DI MARGHERITA DATINI AL MARITO FRANCESCO (1384-1410).

Abstract

During the Late Middle Ages, "robba" was a general term used in documents to reference clothes, ornaments and objects such as caps, doublets, candles, knives, buttons, trimmings, and so on. The letters written by Margherita Datini to her husband Francesco, a wealthy merchant of Prato, between 1384 and 1410, inform us precisely of what consisted this so-called "robba". If the first section of this paper will reason about the objects recorded in the Datini correspondence, a second part will reflected instead on the excellent surveillance, management and administration of these goods that made Margherita a good administrator and also a capable economic operator. Once acknowledged Margherita's abilities, in this paper one intends to focuse on the goods described by the merchant's wife. Through a lexical analysis, said things and their different acquisition forms of registry will be studied: for example, sometimes she urged her husband to buy directly some of these items, while others, they were simply moved from one of their homes to another, since Francesco and Margherita did not live together. Besides this lexical aspect, this research will also try to shed light on the Datini's practices and logistics in acquiring goods, especially on the time required for buying and receiving these objects, and on who was in charge to do this. Particularly regarding these purchases, the recipients of such merchandise as well as the prices of acquired goods will be, when possible, reported, as well as their origins and possible places where they were kept. After examining the "robba", the third part of this paper will be dedicated to their administration and also to how Margherita managed the family's financial resources. To better contextualize her role as an economic operator, this study, at last, will reason on the relationship between women and work in the Late Middle Ages. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
