Fe–Mn oxide modified biochar (FMBC) was produced to explore its potential for remediation of Hg–Cd contaminated paddy soils. The results showed that the application of FMBC decreased the contents of bioavailable Hg and Cd by 41.49–81.85% and 19.47–33.02% in contrast to CK, while the amount of labile organic carbon (C) fractions and C-pool management index (CPMI) was increased under BC and FMBC treated soils, indicating the enhancement of soil C storage and nutrient cycling function. Dry weight of different parts of Oryza sativa L. was enhanced after the addition of BC and FMBC, and the contents of Fe and Mn in root iron–manganese plaques (IMP) were 1.46–2.06 and 6.72–19.35 times higher than those of the control groups. Hg and Cd contents in brown rice under the FMBC treatments were significantly reduced by 18.32–71.16% and 59.52–72.11% compared with the control. FMBC addition altered the composition and metabolism function of soil bacterial communities, especially increasing the abundance of keystone phyla, including Firmicutes, Proteobacteria and Actinobacteria. Partial least squares path modelling (PLSPM) revealed that the contents of Na2S2O3–Hg, DTPA–Cd and IMP were the key indicators affecting Hg and Cd accumulation in rice grains. These results demonstrate the simultaneous value of FMBC in remediation of Hg and Cd combined pollution and restoring soil fertility and biological productivity. Ocean mesoscale flows significantly influence nutrient distribution and biological productivity, yet the scarcity of eddy‐permitting observational data sets and climate modeling hinders understanding their role in carbon sequestration. Using an eddy‐resolving global simulation, this study investigates the significance of ocean mesoscales in air‐sea carbon dioxide (CO2) exchange. Results show over 30% of CO2 flux variance in energetic regions attributed to flows with horizontal scales smaller than 2°. Mesoscale flows can drive a cumulative CO2 flux that is either a net carbon sink or source depending on region, with magnitudes on the order of 105 tonnes of carbon per year. Variations in this mesoscale‐related CO2 flux are correlated with local relative vorticity and the background gradient of ocean partial pressure of CO2. This analysis underscores the importance of considering ocean mesoscales in monitoring carbon flux, highlighting the need to explore the influence of increasing eddy activity on carbon uptake in a changing climate. Plain Language Summary: This study investigates the influence of ocean flows with horizontal scales of tens to hundreds of kilometers (called mesoscale flows) on the exchange of carbon dioxide between the ocean and the atmosphere using a state‐of‐the‐art high resolution global simulation. The high rate of biological productivity in the North Atlantic is stimulated by the advective supply of nutrients into the region via the Gulf Stream (nutrient stream). It has been proposed that the projected future decline in the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) will cause a reduction in nutrient supply and resulting productivity. In this work, we examine how the nutrient stream changed over the Younger Dryas climate reversal that marked the transition out of the last ice age. Gulf Stream nutrient content decreased, and oxygen content increased at the Florida Straits during this time of weakened AMOC. The decreased nutrient stream was accompanied by a reduction in biological productivity at higher latitudes in the North Atlantic, which supports the link postulated in theoretical and modeling studies. Concepción Bay is a socio-economic and ecologically important embayment whose hydrographic variability has been historically regulated by wind-modulated seasonal upwelling events during spring–summer and by freshwater from precipitation and river discharges during fall–winter. This system is subject to several anthropogenic and environmental strains due to the intense port activity and the increasing occurrence of extreme natural events. This study determines a new hydrographic regime and characterizes and analyzes the biogeochemical response of the water column to changes in rainfall and upwelling patterns. Despite the intrusion of nitrate-rich upwelled waters that enhance biological productivity remains more intense during spring–summer, the system remains fertilized year-long due to the occurrence of persistent upwelling pulses during fall–winter. The hydrographic structure presented a two-layer water column that was stratified thermally in spring–summer and primarily by freshwater inputs in fall–winter. Nevertheless, the regular pattern of the rainfall has changed (a decrease in precipitation and an increased frequency of extreme rainfall events), together with recurrent upwelling-favorable wind pulses during the non-upwelling season. This new regime has altered the seasonality of the physicochemical conditions and the structure of the microplanktonic communities, with productive and sanitary implications affecting the biogeochemical status of CB. This article presents the first general treatment of the material from the 1954 and 1988–1989 excavations at the fourth millennium BC site of Siliņupe, examined within a broad framework of food and non-food resource use on the Baltic Sea's Gulf of Riga coast, present-day Latvia. Located at the boundary of marine, freshwater, and terrestrial biotopes, the site offered a high abundance and diversity of wild food resources: marine and terrestrial mammals, birds, and fish. The aquatic environment of the gulf was enriched with nutrients from a wide drainage basin, ensuring very high biological productivity and a rich food chain, while also receiving marine water inflows that promoted the seasonal ingress of marine species. The spectrum of marine and freshwater resources would have permitted year-round habitation, while pottery vessels enabled food processing on a large scale, possibly for delayed consumption. Amber, collected from the beaches and made into jewelry on the site, circulated in an exchange network reaching far into the continental interior, where the major rivers flowing into the gulf served as traffic arteries. BACKGROUND: Soil quality (SQ) assessment is affected by methods that convert data sets into indices, and such analyses are expensive and time‐consuming. Qualitative SQ assessments are faster and cheaper than quantitative methods and they can be repeated to monitor SQ in crop and pasture systems. We evaluated SQ using qualitative and quantitative SQ indicators of two grazing systems under Voisin rational grazing (VRG) with trees (WT) or without trees (NT). We took an adjacent native forest as a reference and we used principal component analysis (PCA) to compare the accuracy of the assessment methods. RESULTS: According to the set of indicators used for quantitative assessment, the WT system and the Forest had higher SQ than other systems as a result of higher values of soil physical and chemical indicators. This the reflected better performance of soil in functions related to structural support, nutrient cycling and biological productivity. According to the set of indicators used for qualitative assessment, the WT system showed better SQ than the NT areas because of the higher scores of all indicators and better performance of the soil functions, and those values were close to the Forest in the indicators. PCA applied to integrate the data of qualitative and quantitative indicators indicated that SQ in WT was similar to Forest. CONCLUSION: The qualitative evaluation was as efficient as the quantitative evaluation for SQ assessment in VRG areas with and without trees. During the Ediacaran–Cambrian transition, a series of stratal continuous and well-preserved siliceous rock and phosphorite assemblages developed in Qingzhen, Guizhou Province, China, facilitating research on the biological evolution, marine chemistry, and palaeoecological environment of this period. Therefore, we investigated the paleontology, trace and rare earth elements, total organic carbon, total sulfur content, and Zn isotopes of the phosphorus-bearing rock series in the Taozichong Formation of the Cambrian period in Qingzhen. Geochemical analysis reveals that the sedimentary rocks in this area were formed in the oxygen-rich seawater environment and were not affected by high-temperature hydrothermal activity. The upwelling ocean current provided abundant rare earth elements and other nutrient elements, as well as conditions for the prosperity of biota in Qingzhen. In addition, the δ66Zn value (−0.21‰–0.41‰ range and 0.17‰ mean) in the Qingzhen phosphorous rock series was much lower than that in seawater, indicating a strong level of biological productivity. The variation trend of δ13C, δ18O, and δ66Zn exhibited four stages and three obvious drift events. The results suggest that climate change during this period led to the intermittent flourishing and extinction of organisms, which triggered the negative drift of δ13C and δ18O in the ocean, resulting in a coordinated response of δ66Zn. The unique ecological environment of the Taozichong Formation in Qingzhen also provides favorable conditions for the population continuation of Ediacaran-type benthic soft-bodied metazoon dominated by discoid fossils, Shaanxilithes, worm fossils, and sponge fossils in the Cambrian strata, as well as participation in the global biological explosion events. Mesoscale and submesoscale processes have crucial impacts on ocean biogeochemistry, importantly enhancing the primary production in nutrient‐deficient ocean regions. Yet, the intricate biophysical interplay still holds mysteries. Using targeted high‐resolution in situ observations in the South China Sea, we reveal that isopycnal submesoscale stirring serves as the primary driver of vertical nutrient transport to sustain the dome‐shaped subsurface chlorophyll maximum (SCM) within a long‐lived cyclonic mesoscale eddy. Density surface doming at the eddy core increased light exposure for phytoplankton production, while along‐isopycnal submesoscale stirring disrupted the mesoscale coherence and drove significant vertical exchange of tracers. These physical processes play a crucial role in maintaining the elevated phytoplankton biomass in the eddy core. Our findings shed light on the universal mechanism of how mesoscale and submesoscale coupling enhances primary production in ocean cyclonic eddies, highlighting the pivotal role of submesoscale stirring in structuring marine ecosystems. Changes in Southern Ocean biological pump efficiency are frequently invoked as a source of glacial/interglacial CO2 variability. It was recently suggested that Southern Ocean biological pump weakening also contributed to Holocene CO2 increase. Here we test the causes and downstream effects of biological pump inefficiency during the Holocene. We first provide evidence that a southward shift of the South Westerly Winds, was likely the cause of increasing upwelling in the Southern Ocean leading to local biological pump weakening as reflected in fossil‐bound δ15N. We then introduce a series of ultra‐high resolution (6 m/ky) productivity records from the Chilean Margin to determine the fate of Southern Ocean nutrients. A compilation of records from Pacific sites supports export and complete consumption of preformed Southern Ocean nutrients, which might have reduced the contributions of Southern Ocean marine source to the Holocene increase in atmospheric CO2. Previous work hypothesized that changes to biological nutrient utilization drove large CO2 variability and recently even the Holocene CO2 increase. Then, we create a series of high resolution productivity records to investigate downstream effects of said changes. We find that Southern Ocean nutrients are upwelled to the Chilean Margin surface to promote productivity. We further demonstrate that unused Southern Ocean nutrients continue to fuel increases in productivity and low nitrogen isotopic signatures of organic matter throughout the South Pacific. Our results therefore suggest that while the Southern Ocean was a CO2 source during the Holocene and likely contributed to the contributed to the Holocene CO2 increase, other regions mitigated this release via biologic consumption. We extend the ecological component (ECOGEM) of the carbon-centric Grid-Enabled Integrated Earth system model (cGEnIE) to include a diatom functional group. ECOGEM represents plankton community dynamics via a spectrum of ecophysiological traits originally based on size and plankton food web (phyto- and zooplankton; EcoGEnIE 1.0), which we developed here to account for a diatom functional group (EcoGEnIE 1.1). We tuned EcoGEnIE 1.1, exploring a range of ecophysiological parameter values specific to phytoplankton, including diatom growth and survival (18 parameters over 550 runs) to achieve best fits to observations of diatom biogeography and size class distribution as well as to global ocean nutrient and dissolved oxygen distributions. This, in conjunction with a previously developed representation of opal dissolution and an updated representation of the ocean iron cycle in the water column, resulted in an improved distribution of dissolved oxygen in the water column relative to the previous EcoGEnIE 1.0, with global export production (7.4 Gt C yr -1) now closer to previous estimates. Simulated diatom biogeography is characterised by larger size classes dominating at high latitudes, notably in the Southern Ocean, and smaller size classes dominating at lower latitudes. Overall, diatom biological productivity accounts for ∼20% of global carbon biomass in the model, with diatoms outcompeting other phytoplankton functional groups when dissolved silica is available due to their faster maximum photosynthetic rates and reduced palatability to grazers. Adding a diatom functional group provides the cGEnIE Earth system model with an extended capability to explore ecological dynamics and their influence on ocean biogeochemistry. The global oceanÕs oxygen inventory is declining in response to global warming, but the future of the low-oxygen tropics is uncertain. We report new evidence for tropical oxygenation during the Paleocene-Eocene Thermal Maximum (PETM), a warming event that serves as a geologic analog to anthropogenic warming. Foraminifera-bound nitrogen isotopes indicate that the tropical North Pacific oxygen-deficient zone contracted during the PETM. A concomitant increase in foraminifera size implies that oxygen availability rose in the shallow subsurface throughout the tropical North Pacific. These changes are consistent with ocean model simulations of warming, in which a decline in biological productivity allows tropical subsurface oxygen to rise even as global ocean oxygen declines. The efficiency of cyclic irrigation (CI) (using river water (RW) and drainage water (DW)) was investigated and compared with normal irrigation (NI) (using only RW). A 24 × 30 m research area was selected and divided into three plots – A (maize), B (soybean) and C (sunflower). Plot A was designed to produce DW for the irrigation of plots B and C. In plot B, a split-plot design was applied with randomised complete blocks with two treatments: irrigation type and rate of urea fertiliser application. The experimental design of plot C was similar to that of plot B except for the rate of fertiliser application. Analysis of variance (Anova) results for soybean revealed that the interaction between irrigation type and urea level had significant effects on growth yield and biological water productivity (WP) (P < 0.01) and fresh leaf weight (P < 0.05). The Anova results for sunflower showed that the interaction between irrigation type and urea level had significant effects on 100-seed weight, seed yield and seed WP (P < 0.05). The highest increase in WP for sunflower was for forage WP (0.768 kg/m3 for NI and 2.603 kg/m3 for CI). The WP of RW for total forage, total seed and total biological yields for CI compared with NI increased by 76.67%, 72.95% and 75.45%, respectively. The lowest increase in WP was for sunflower seed yield (0.276 kg/m3 for NI and 0.821 kg/m3 for CI). This study examines the future climate change in the South Asia region during 2070–2099 with respect to the historical period (1975–2004) under RCP8.5 scenario using a high-resolution regional earth system model. We found substantial changes in the key climatic parameters over the South Asia region including ocean biological productivity, however, the magnitude of response varies spatially. A substantial increase (> 2.5 °C) in the projected annual-mean sea surface temperature (SST) was found over the Indian Ocean with the highest increase (~ 3.4 °C) locally in the northern part of the Arabian Sea and in the Persian Gulf, SST changes being significant throughout the study area with 95% confidence level. The changes in the sea surface salinity showed strong spatial variability with the highest freshening over northern Bay of Bengal and highest salinity in the Persian Gulf followed by northern Arabian Sea. The amount of annual-mean precipitation will substantially increase over the eastern coast of the Bay of Bengal (up to 1.5–2.0 mm/day) and along the equator in the band 10° S–10° N (0.5–1.5 mm/day), while it will decrease over the western part of the Bay of Bengal and in the northern states of India (− 0.5 to 1.0 mm/day). The most pronounced increase of precipitation rate in the future climate will occur over India (3–5 mm/day) and the eastern coasts of the Bay of Bengal (> 5 mm/day) during the monsoon period, and over the equatorial band (2–3 mm/day) during the post-monsoon period, with all precipitation changes indicated above being significant at 95% confidence level. River plumes are a dominant forcing agent in the coastal ocean, transporting tracers and nutrients offshore and interacting with coastal circulation. In this study we characterize the novel "cross-shelf" regime of freshwater river plumes. Rather than remaining coastally trapped (a well-established regime), a wind-driven cross-shelf plume propagates for tens to over 100 km offshore of the river mouth while remaining coherent. We perform a suite of high-resolution idealized numerical experiments that offer insight into how the cross-shelf regime comes about and the parameter space it occupies. The wind-driven shelf flow comprising the geostrophic along-shelf and the Ekman cross-shelf transport advects the plume momentum and precludes geostrophic adjustment within the plume, leading to continuous generation of internal solitons in the offshore and upstream segment of the plume. The solitons propagate into the plume interior, transporting mass within the plume and suppressing plume widening. We examine an additional ultra-high-resolution case that resolves submesoscale dynamics. This case is dynamically consistent with the lower-resolution simulations, but additionally captures vigorous inertial-symmetric instability leading to frontal erosion and lateral mixing. We support these findings with observations of the Winyah Bay plume, where the cross-shelf regime is observed under analogous forcing conditions to the model. The study offers an in-depth introduction to the cross-shelf plume regime and a look into the submesoscale mixing phenomena arising in estuarine plumes. Significance Statement: In this study, we characterize a novel regime of freshwater river plumes. Rather than spreading near to or along the coast, under certain conditions river plumes may propagate away from the coast and remain coherent for tens to over 100 km offshore. Cross-shelf plumes provide a mechanism by which freshwater and river-borne materials may be transported into the open ocean, especially across wide continental shelves. Such plumes carry nutrients critical for biological productivity offshore and interact with large-scale oceanic features such as the Gulf Stream. We use high-resolution numerical modeling to examine how the cross-shelf regime arises and support our findings with observational evidence. Uranium is a redox-sensitive trace element that under certain sedimentary conditions will reflect changes in past biological productivity and/or deep ocean ventilation. Applications for the isotopic composition of U (234U:238U activity ratio, δ234U or the per mil deviation from secular equilibrium) as a paleoceanographic proxy, however, remain largely unexplored in pelagic sediments. We present δ234U of bulk U for a 504-kyr record of South Atlantic core ODP 1094, a record that has exhibited sensitivity to bottom water formation with minimal 238U remobilization due to changes in redox condition. Sedimentary δ234U at time of burial was modeled given authigenic and detrital sources, where it was found that δ234U has a reoccurring pattern of anomalous behavior around deglacial transitions. In many cases, the anomalous δ234U compositions in sediment exceeded seawater, which is not consistent with its expected sources. A mass balance of 234U across these anomalous sections showed that vertical rearrangement of 234U can explain anomalous sedimentary δ234U during Marine Isotope Stage (MIS) 7/8 and 11/12 transitions, as well as partially during MIS 5/6 and MIS 9/10. The distribution of these anomalies is likely consistent with the idea that deglacial spikes in aU, resulting from periods of high organic carbon delivery and thereby strong reduction in the sediments, act as a persistent sink of 234U alpha-recoiled from vertically adjacent sediment layers after burial. While this mechanism explains the negative δ234U anomalies, there is a large subset of positive δ234U anomalies that cannot be explained by vertical diffusion of 234U in pore waters alone. This excess 234U points to an extremely high δ234U source to seawater during deglaciation or additional diagenetic effects such as diffusion from lateral heterogeneity in the redox state of sediment at depth. Drastic climate changes over the years have triggered environmental challenges for wild plants and crops due to fluctuating weather patterns worldwide. This has caused different types of stressors, responsible for a decrease in plant life and biological productivity, with consequent food shortages, especially in areas under threat of desertification. Nanotechnology-based approaches have great potential in mitigating environmental stressors, thus fostering a sustainable agriculture. Zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) have demonstrated to be biostimulants as well as remedies to both environmental and biotic stresses. Their administration in the early sowing stages, i.e., seed priming, proved to be effective in improving germination rate, seedling and plant growth and in ameliorating the indicators of plants' well-being. Seed nano-priming acts through several mechanisms such as enhanced nutrients uptake, improved antioxidant properties, ROS accumulation and lipid peroxidation. The target for seed priming by ZnO NPs is mostly crops of large consumption or staple food, in order to meet the increased needs of a growing population and the net drop of global crop frequency, due to climate changes and soil contaminations. The current review focuses on the most recent low-cost, low-sized ZnO NPs employed for seed nano-priming, to alleviate abiotic and biotic stresses, mitigate the negative effects of improper storage and biostimulate plants' growth and well-being. Taking into account that there is large variability among ZnO NPs and that their chemico-physical properties may play a role in determining the efficacy of nano-priming, for all examined cases, it is reported whether the ZnO NPs are commercial or lab prepared. In the latter cases, the preparation conditions are described, along with structural and morphological characterizations. Under these premises, future perspectives and challenges are discussed in relation to structural properties and the possibility of ZnO NPs engineering. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Peculiarities of the compositionally pure larch stand formation following forest fires have been studied in the northern (Evenkia, middle course of the Nizhnyaya Tunguska River, 64°03′ N, 101°10′ E) and southern (Yermakovsky District, 52°23′ N, 93°33 ′ E) regions of Krasnoyarsk Krai. The structure, growth, and biological productivity of the forest restoration successions have been analyzed based on the materials from the sample plots. The highest phytomass value (in terms of total productivity) in larch stands is 1055.5 t abs. dry substances/ha at the age of 93 years. The structural ratio of the forest stands phytomass fractions naturally changes with an increase in their average age and density. An increase in the average age of a stand is associated with an increase in its above-ground and root phytomasses. At the same time, the relative proportion of the crown wood mass and needle mass in the total above-ground phytomass of a stand decreases. In 38-year-old larch forests, the proportion of crown mass is 18% and the share of stems is 82%. In 60-year-old forest stands, the total biomass of the crown wood and needles accounts for 14%, and the other 86% accounts for the stem weight. In the 93-year-old larch forest, the proportion of stem phytomass increases to 89%, and the proportion of combined crown wood and needles biomasses fall up to a minimum value of 11%. The maximum growth potential of the 56-year-old larch stands, according to the current increase in phytomass (in terms of total productivity), is realized at about 14.69 t abs. dry substances/ha per year. The young and middle-aged larch forests formed on the burnt areas have higher rates of growth and phytomass accumulation; in terms of the amount of fixed atmospheric carbon, they exceed the mature and overmature stands by more than two times. Arctic landscapes are characterised by their numerous ponds and lakes. With increased climate warming and consequent changes in hydrological connectivity, the ecology of many of these waterbodies is expected to change.We sampled 13 ponds and 22 lakes for zooplankton and various limnological and physical environmental variables in the vicinity of Cambridge Bay, Nunavut (69.1169° N, 105.0597° W), with the aim of testing how well the degree of hydrological connectivity explained patterns in species composition and abundance and contributed to crustacean production. Ponds were hydrologically isolated while the lakes were arranged in four lake chains and ranged from the headwaters to highly inter‐connected lakes receiving water from one to 768 upstream lakes.In all sites combined, 77 zooplankton species were found, including 56 rotifers, six copepods, 11 cladocerans, two fairy shrimp species, a mysid, and a tadpole shrimp. We show that the zooplankton communities differed between hydrologically isolated (ponds) and connected (lakes) systems, with 17 species unique to ponds and 20 to lakes. Furthermore, the communities were more similar within lake chains and hence in lakes closer to each other. In ponds, distances between waterbodies had no impact on community similarity.Zooplankton abundance was higher in lakes (255 ind/L) than in ponds (65 ind/L) due to the higher number of rotifers that accounted for nearly 80% of the zooplankton abundance in lakes. In ponds, rotifers, cladocerans, and copepods were equally abundant. In terms of biomass, cladocerans represented 65% of total biomass in all waterbodies except for a chain of deep lakes that had abundant fish communities. In these lakes, cladoceran abundance and biomass were low and probably limited by fish predation.Zooplankton production was higher in ponds (4.6 mgC m−3 day−1) than in lakes (1.7 mgC m−3 day−1), and within lakes was lowest in the chain composed of large lakes (1.3 mgC m−3 day−1). The high production in ponds was closely linked to high zooplankton biomass and further explained by high gross primary production supported by relatively high nutrient concentrations in these shallow systems.Our study emphasises that hydrological connectivity is key to shaping zooplankton communities, although fish presence also appears to affect them. It shows that isolated ponds (that currently account for c83% of all waterbodies on southern Victoria Island) are hotspots of aquatic biological productivity that probably play an essential role in Arctic freshwater landscapes. The Tethyan domain hosts the world's most abundant hydrocarbon and Mississippi Valley-type (MVT) Pb-Zn resources. The relations among organic matter-rich sediments, MVT Pb-Zn mineralization, and the Tethyan tectonic evolution history are an important scientific issue. The data of paleogeographic reconstruction indicate that the Proto-, Paleo-, and Neo-Tethys oceans mainly lay in low latitude areas between 30°N and 45°S. The high temperature and precipitation and the lack of sea water overturning in stagnant basins resulted in high marine biological productivity and good preservation conditions for organic matter-rich sediments. Consequently, abundant organic matter-rich sediments were developed and preserved in the Tethyan domain and thus created abundant hydrocarbon resources. Mineralization age data demonstrate that MVT deposits mainly formed during the continent-continent convergence in the late stage of the Tethyan tectonic evolution. Deposits are located in the fold-and-thrust belts and forelands of the continent-continent convergence orogen, and spatially associated with hydrocarbon basins. Organic matter-rich sediments are well developed in MVT ore districts, where hydrocarbon activity appeared earlier than or nearly simultaneous with the Pb-Zn mineralization event. Hydrocarbon activity generally began earlier than the Pb-Zn mineralization in individual deposits. Organic matter-rich sediments and hydrocarbons mainly play the role of reducing agents in the MVT Pb-Zn mineralization process. Through bacterial or thermal reduction, dissolved sulfates from sedimentary strata were reduced to generate reduced sulfur for Pb-Zn sulfide mineralization. In summary, the Tethyan oceans have long been in low latitude areas near the equator, making the Tethyan domain develop abundant organic matter-rich sediments and associated hydrocarbon resources which reduce sulfates to provide sufficient reduced sulfur for MVT Pb-Zn mineralization in the region. For the Blue Foods economy—those sectors that gain value from the biological productivity of the oceans such as fisheries and aquaculture—climate shocks pose an existential threat. Species range shifts, harmful algal blooms, marine heatwaves, low oxygen events, coral bleaching, and hurricanes all present a serious economic risk to these industries, and yet there exist few financial tools for managing these risks. This contrasts with agriculture, where financial tools such as insurance are widely available for managing numerous weather-related shocks. Designing financial tools to aid risk management, such as insurance, for equitable resilience against marine climate shocks will give coastal communities access to the necessary means for reducing their sensitivity to climate shocks and improving their long-term adaptive capacity. We suggest that a convergence of the insurance industry and marine sectors, fostered through collaboration with governments, academics, and NGOs will help usher in new forms of insurance, such as ocean-index or parametric insurance. These new risk-management tools have the potential to help incentivize sustainable use of living marine resources, as well as strengthening the economic resilience of coastal communities to climate change. Determining the extinction risk of poorly known species is difficult, as data on both their biological traits and the threats to which they are exposed are often not available. Neotropical freshwater stingrays (potamotrygonins) represent such a challenge, as limited ecological data prevent formal assessments. Geographic range size (GRS) was computed for the first time for potamotrygonins (as a longitudinal extent of occurrence measured in km of river length) and, together with two other traits correlated with intrinsic susceptibility to extinction—body size, biological productivity (rmax)—was used to rank potamotrygonins according to their intrinsic susceptibility to extinction. Potamotrygonin GRS was only 6%–7% of that of marine elasmobranchs and is likely to be a significant driver of potamotrygonin extinction risk. The relationship between potamotrygonin GRS and body size differed from the expected triangular theoretical pattern; probably a result of the fragmented nature of freshwater habitats. Using K‐medoids clustering, we identified seven groups of species; the most susceptible groups comprised the biggest species such as Potamotrygon brachyura and Paratrygon spp. Intrinsic susceptibility was also highest in the largest hydrographic basins, likely as a result of species with low rmax being more common there. Exposure to anthropogenic threats is highest for the species most intrinsically susceptible to extinction, which consequently have a high‐extinction risk. We recommend the use of longitudinal extents of occurrence as standardized measurements of freshwater taxa GRS. Sage is one of the most appreciated plants for its plethora biologically active. But, root rot disease, a prevalent fungal disease that can afflict a variety of plants, including sage, leads to the death of plants and a decrease in yield, which has prompted the exploration of alternative strategies for disease control. The current research was conducted over the consecutive growing seasons of 2022 and 2023 at the Al-Quassassin Research Station, Agricultural Research Center (ARC), Ismailia Governorate, Egypt. The objective was to investigate the impact of different treatments, Trichoderma harzianum, Bacillus subtilis, angel yeast, humic acid, compost tea and their combinations, on the management of sage root rot disease and its influence on productivity within an organic farming system. In greenhouse study results, Rhizoctonia solani proved to be the most aggressive soil borne disease, causing the highest incidence rates at 40.0%, 35.0% and 20.0% for pre-, post-emergence damping-off and root rot, respectively. Sclerotium rolfsii followed closely, with incidence rates of 35.0%, 30.0%, and 12% for these respective stages. The antagonists’ isolates exhibited significant variations in their capacity to inhibit the in vitro linear growth of both tested pathogenic fungi. T. harzianum demonstrated the most substantial reduction in mycelial growth, with an impressive 80.95% decrease, closely trailed by T. album at 80.05%, B. subtilis at 74.30%, and B. megaterium 64.37%, on average. In the field experiment, all treatments resulted in significant reduction of the disease incidence and severity of sage root rot and promoted the growth parameters, oil and crop yield of sage plants in both seasons. Dinitrogen (N2) fixation provides the major source of reactive nitrogen in the open ocean, sustaining biological productivity. The Indian Ocean (IO) covers 22% of the ocean surface, while it only represents 1% of the global diazotroph database. Hence, constraining the sources of nitrogen in the IO is crucial. Here, we compile three decades of N2 fixation and diazotroph DNA data in the IO. Our analysis reveals basin‐scale yearly rates between ~ 7 and 13 Tg N yr−1. These rates are in the range of previous modeling‐based estimates but may represent a lower bound estimate due to the lack of data in this basin. Diazotroph variability among sub‐basins may suggest endemicity but needs to be taken with caution due to biased sampling toward certain seasons and uneven spatial coverage. Background: The article presents the results of studies that allow us to calculate and predict the water consumption of cultivated vegetable crops depending on the moisture availability of the growing season. Hydrothermal indicators of the territory during the entire growing season have a significant impact on the irrigation regime and water consumption of cultivated crops. Methods: In the present study, the assessment of natural moisture during the growing season was determined by the hydrothermal coefficient (GTC) according to the criterion of T.G. Selyaninov. The irrigation rate was calculated according to the modified formula of A.N. Kostyakov. Biological productivity was taken into account by the method of meter sites in three-fold repetition. Result: The value of the irrigation norm varies depending on the intensity of atmospheric droughts when growing potatoes in the conditions of the dry-steppe zone of the Lower Volga region. To maintain a given pre-irrigation threshold of soil moisture, it is necessary to take into account the hydrothermal indicators of the territory during the entire growing season. The use of modern resource-saving irrigation methods, such as drip irrigation, makes it possible to ensure an uninterrupted supply of moisture to plants and, as a result, to obtain high-quality crop yields. Thus, to obtain high and stable yields of potatoes grown on drip irrigation, depending on the heat and moisture availability of the growing season, it took from 2,250 to 3,040 m3/ha of irrigation water. Iron availability limits marine ecosystem activities in large areas of the ocean. However, the sources and seasonal supply of iron, critically important for controlling surface ocean biogeochemistry and carbon cycling, are poorly understood. The western subarctic Pacific is a high-nutrient and low-chlorophyll region, and despite high concentrations of macronutrients, iron limits phytoplankton production in summer. Here, we determine the seasonal deposition flux of Asian dust using scanning electron microscope–cathodoluminescence analysis of single quartz particles derived from the western subarctic Pacific during 2003–2022 to trace provenance. We found a high (up to 6.9 mg m−2 day−1) deposition flux of Asian dust in May, June, and early July, with an annual average of 1.0 ± 0.2 mg m−2 day−1. The supply of dissolved-iron flux calculated from Asian dust was 0.9 ± 0.3 µg m−2 day−1 during the high productivity season (April–July), which is approximately half that from the deeper part of the ocean, calculated from vertical profiles of dissolved iron. Our study provides a reliable approach for estimating iron supply from dust to the surface ocean that may be critical for sustaining biological productivity under future ocean stratification, which suppresses nutrient supply from the subsurface ocean. Subtropical gyres cover 26%–29% of the world's surface ocean and are conventionally regarded as ocean deserts due to their permanent stratification, depleted surface nutrients, and low biological productivity. Despite tremendous advances over the past three decades, particularly through the Hawaii Ocean Time‐series and the Bermuda Atlantic Time‐series Study, which have revolutionized our understanding of the biogeochemistry in oligotrophic marine ecosystems, the gyres remain understudied. We review current understanding of upper ocean biogeochemistry in the North Pacific Subtropical Gyre, considering other subtropical gyres for comparison. We focus our synthesis on spatial variability, which shows larger than expected dynamic ranges of properties such as nutrient concentrations, rates of N2 fixation, and biological production. This review provides new insights into how nutrient sources drive community structure and export in upper subtropical gyres. We examine the euphotic zone (EZ) in subtropical gyres as a two‐layered vertically structured system: a nutrient‐depleted layer above the top of the nutricline in the well‐lit upper ocean and a nutrient‐replete layer below in the dimly lit waters. These layers vary in nutrient supply and stoichiometries and physical forcing, promoting differences in community structure and food webs, with direct impacts on the magnitude and composition of export production. We evaluate long‐term variations in key biogeochemical parameters in both of these EZ layers. Finally, we identify major knowledge gaps and research challenges in these vast and unique systems that offer opportunities for future studies. Plain Language Summary: Vast subtropical oceans feature basin‐wide anticyclonic gyres, which restrict vertical supplies of nutrients, resulting in low surface nutrient concentrations and generally low rates of biological production. The subtropical gyres have therefore traditionally been regarded as ocean deserts. Through a comprehensive data re‐analysis focusing on the North Pacific Subtropical Gyre, we find larger than expected spatiotemporal variability in biogeochemical properties in subtropical gyres, including the distribution of nutrients, N2 fixation, and biological production. Such variations are most pronounced through the sunlit water column (euphotic zone [EZ]), including sharp gradients in nutrient concentrations and sources and microbial community structure. Based on analysis and synthesis conducted in this study, we show evidence for the functioning of a two‐layer EZ habitat, with each layer differentiated primarily by inputs of sunlight and nutrients. Our understanding of long‐term biogeochemical variability is relatively restricted, owing to a lack of reliable long‐term observations at adequate spatial scales. We therefore urge the development and use of higher temporal and spatial resolution sampling strategies, for example, through the use of autonomous sampling platforms, that will allow for a greater understanding of biogeochemical processes and facilitate improvements in numerical modeling capabilities. The biological activity of dark gray soil was studied in a 100-year-old forbs–green-moss Pogorel'skii pine forest in Krasnoyarsk forest-steppe. Selective felling were performed in the pine forest in 2017, and there was a strong fire in May 2022. Biofertilizer based on sawdust-soil substrate with the addition of urea and mycoproduct (SSSM + U) was applied to the cut and burned areas to improve reforestation and increase the biological productivity of the soil. Self-seeding of pine was annually counted on experimental sites (forest strip after felling, skidding trail, and background). The total number and ratio of ecological-trophic groups of microorganisms, enzyme activity, the content of microbial biomass, and the intensity of basal respiration and of specific respiration of microbial biomass were used for bioindication of the soil status. Application of a biofertilizer to the cut areas favored soil alkalization by 0.2–0.4 pH units, preservation of moisture, and a rise in the content of nitrogen (by 5–14%) and microbial biomass (1.2–1.6 times) as compared to the control. The impact of biofertilizers on the germination and growth of pine self-seeding was seen on the second year after the application: the number of self-seeding on the experimental sites was 4–6 times greater than on the control ones. The input of burnt plant residues, coals, and ash into the soil in the first week after the fire resulted in an increase in some microbiological parameters, in the activity of urease and invertase, and in the activation of carbotrophic microorganisms. However, microbiological activity decreased by the end of the growing season, which indicated a post-pyrogenic suppression of microbial cenoses. The application of biofertilizer to the surface of the burnt plots leveled the pyrogenic effect and stimulated the formation of pine shoots, the number of which was significantly higher than on the control plots. It was found that universal bioindicators, which adequately reflect the soil status after any anthropogenic impacts, included the microbial biomass, specific microbial respiration, enzymatic activity, and the total number of microorganisms. An increase in the portion of Serratia plymuthica and Bacillus mycoides bacteria and of Trichoderma, Penicillium, and Mortierela fungi was a specific bioindicator of the soil status after the fire. Understanding dissolved organic carbon (DOC) export dynamics from carbon‐rich environments is critical. Peatlands act as terrestrial carbon stores, and consequently supply substantial amounts of DOC to drainage. This DOC flux is temporally heterogeneous and subject to long‐ and short‐term variability. Ultrahigh temporal resolution sampling (< hourly) is still in‐frequent in peatland catchments. We used a field‐deployable —ultraviolet–visible light spectrometer (Spectro::lyser™) and monitored DOC flux from a temperate peatland over 31 months to examine seasonal and event dynamics. DOC concentration varied from 6.8 to 63.5 mg L−1, in the higher reported range for peatlands and showed clear seasonal (high‐summer, low‐winter) variability coinciding with elevated biological productivity in the peatland. Discharge was an unreliable predictor of instantaneous DOC concentration overall, with antecedent water temperatures proving the most reliable predictor overall. Discharge drove total DOC export in the catchment, where the top 10% of flow events, accounted for 41.3% of all DOC exported—increasing to 84.6% in the top 50% of flow events. Total estimated catchment DOC flux was sensitive to measurement frequency: increasing from every 30 min to daily altered export estimates by < 1%, increasing to > 10% at 1‐week intervals. The variation in estimated flux increased approximately linearly with reduced sampling frequency, reaching > 40% at monthly intervals. High‐resolution data reveal the large amount of within‐site complexity of DOC export dynamics in a temperate peatland and provide evidence on the subsequently recommended sampling frequency for the future elucidation of detailed DOC budgets in these environments. Energy is the foundation of the global economy and is essential to human survival. Nevertheless, more than 60% of it comes from fossil fuels. That is not a replenished and scarce source. However, a sizable amount of organic waste is generated every minute throughout the world and can be used as a raw material to produce renewable energy. Among them, Coffee processing generates a huge amount of solid and liquid waste that is organic and can serve as raw material for biofuel production. Since coffee beans and powder are Ethiopia's main exports, coffee pulp is easily accessible. Therefore, the main goal of this project is to convert this waste, which largely consists of organic materials, into a valuable product called Methane. The purity and yield of methane productivity are significantly influenced by the type of additives we use. This work systematically investigates the effect of chemical and biological additives on the productivity and purity of the Biogas from the coffee pulp silage in batch systems under mesophilic temperature (38 °C) for different ensiling periods and additive proportions. The chemical additives recorded the maximum biogas production (2980 ml) at an ensiling period of 40 days with high purity of about 70% biogas. The minimum Biogas was recorded at the ensiling period of 10 days by the control (T1) treatments, which was 634 ml. The ecosystem services approach has provided background and motivated international legislation and agreements aiming to halt and reverse ecosystem degradation and biodiversity loss, such as the Intergovernmental Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES), the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration, and the EU Nature Restoration Law. The papers included in this Special Issue, together with reviews on ecosystem services provided by other aquatic ecosystems and organisms (e.g., Barbier et al., [2]; Macadam & Stockan, [25]; Hilt et al., [14]; Riis et al., [37]; Janssen et al., [16]), contribute to highlighting the relevance of these ecosystems and organisms to human wellbeing, and emphasizing the need for their conservation and restoration. Fjords play an important role in biological productivity worldwide but are vulnerable to climate/anthropogenic effects. Chilean Patagonia (41°S–55°S) is one of the largest fjord ecosystems in the world, characterized by a complex geography with highly heterogeneous hydrographic conditions and a permanent input from oceanic water mass, both of which influence the ichthyoplankton distributional patterns. In this study, we analysed the distributional patterns of ichthyoplankton and its diversity during austral spring from 1996, 2009 and 2019 in the southern Chilean fjords (47°S–54°S). The area shows important latitudinal gradients of sea surface temperature (from 15°C to 5°C), fjord‐ocean variability in salinity (from 23 to 33) and water column temperature (3°C to 9°C). Spatial (but not temporal) variations in the composition and abundance of ichthyoplankton were recorded, caused mainly by differences in the abundance of larval Sprattus fuegensis, Maurolicus australis and Sebastes oculatus. Richness was higher on continental shelf and the lowest nearby fjord's head and ice fields. At the spatial scale, β‐diversity showed an increased species replacement (turnover) across areas, suggesting an important role of environmental conditions (e.g., salinity and water stratification) on the larval fish structure in this region. Ordination analysis indicates that changes in salinity and temperature, caused by ice melting, is the main environmental factor influencing the abundance of larval Thysanopsetta naresi (1996), Cataetyx messieri (2009) and Bathylagichthys parini (2019). Finally, this study highlights the importance of the conservation and protection of the Chilean Patagonia and monitoring ichthyoplankton communities, which are vital biomarkers of ecosystem health. African coastal waters provide important socioeconomic functions to littoral settlements; however, progressive nutrient enrichment of the waters has impacted negatively on them. This study identified the dynamics influencing eutrophication in Lagos coastal waters. The water column was sampled at two depths (5 cm and 2 m) and sediment samples were collected from 26 locations from November–December 2019 to January–March and August–October 2020. The various phosphorus species were determined by molybdenum blue spectrophotometry. Chlorophyll a was determined using pigment extraction -spectrophotometry. Phosphate mineralogy of sediment was determined using X-ray diffraction. The results showed that reactive P concentration ranged from 0.02 to 0.40 mg L−1 across the water layers, while chlorophyll a was between 10.7 and 57.4 µg L−1. Sediment bioavailable P was 2.61 to 43.4 mg kg−1, while berlinite-P ranged from 17.3 to 96.6 g kg−1. The high level of bioavailable P, above the threshold for plant growth, showed that sedimentary P might act as a source of internal loading and that the berlinite mineral (AlPO4) content of sediments influenced the ability of sediment to act as a sink or source of P in the coastal water system. The results also showed that nutrient availability and release from sediment were influenced by water physicochemical conditions The significance of the positive associations between the green algae and the water -column P species was more prominent in the wet season. There is a need to develop regulatory tools to reduce human perturbations in these waters, which will in turn enhance the recovery and regeneration of the biodiversity of these waters. The Mesozoic terrestrial Jehol Biota of northern China exceeds the biomass and biodiversity of contemporaneous Lagerstätten. From 135 to 120 Ma, biotic radiation may have responded to the peak destruction of the North China Craton. However, the direct mechanistic link between geological and biological evolution is unclear. Phosphorus (P), a bio-essential nutrient, can be supplied by weathering of volcanics in terrestrial ecosystems. The middle–late Mesozoic volcanic-sedimentary sequences of northern China are amazingly rich in terrestrial organisms. Here we demonstrate episodic increases in P delivery, biological productivity, and species abundance in these strata to reveal the coevolution of volcanism and terrestrial biotas. A massive P supply from the weathering of voluminous volcanic products of craton destruction thus supported a terrestrial environment conducive to the high prosperity of the Jehol Biota. During the nascent stage of craton destruction, such volcanic-biotic coupling can also account for the preceding Yanliao Biota with relatively fewer fossils. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Southern Ocean upper-layer freshwater balance exerts a global climatic influence by modulating density stratification and biological productivity, and hence the exchange of heat and carbon between the atmosphere and the ocean interior. It is thus important to understand and quantify the time-varying freshwater inputs, which is challenging from measurements of salinity alone. Here we use seawater oxygen isotopes from samples collected between 2016 and 2021 along a transect spanning the Scotia and northern Weddell Seas to separate the freshwater contributions from sea ice and meteoric sources. The unprecedented retreat of sea ice in 2016 is evidenced as a strong increase in sea ice melt across the northern Weddell Sea, with surface values increasing approximately two percentage points between 2016 and 2018 and column inventories increasing approximately 1 to 2 m. Surface meteoric water concentrations exceeded 4% in early 2021 close to South Georgia due to meltwater from the A68 megaberg; smaller icebergs may influence meteoric water at other times also. Nitrogen (N) plays a central role in marine biogeochemistry by limiting biological productivity in the surface ocean; influencing the cycles of other nutrients, carbon, and oxygen; and controlling oceanic emissions of nitrous oxide (N 2 O) to the atmosphere. Multiple chemical forms of N are linked together in a dynamic N cycle that is especially active in oxygen minimum zones (OMZs), where high organic matter remineralization and low oxygen concentrations fuel aerobic and anaerobic N transformations. Biogeochemical models used to understand the oceanic N cycle and project its change often employ simple parameterizations of the network of N transformations and omit key intermediary tracers such as nitrite (NO 2-) and N 2 O. Here we present a new model of the oceanic N cycle (Nitrogen cycling in Oxygen Minimum Zones, or NitrOMZ) that resolves N transformation occurring within OMZs and their sensitivity to environmental drivers. The model is designed to be easily coupled to current ocean biogeochemical models by representing the major forms of N as prognostic tracers and parameterizing their transformations as a function of seawater chemistry and organic matter remineralization, with minimal interference in other elemental cycles. We describe the model rationale, formulation, and numerical implementation in a one-dimensional representation of the water column that reproduces typical OMZ conditions. We further detail the optimization of uncertain model parameters against observations from the eastern tropical South Pacific OMZ and evaluate the model's ability to reproduce observed profiles of N tracers and transformation rates in this region. We conclude by describing the model's sensitivity to parameter choices and environmental factors and discussing the model's suitability for ocean biogeochemical studies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The "Snowball Earths" were cataclysmic events during the late Neoproterozoic's Cryogenian period (720-635 Ma) in which most, if not all, of Earth's surface was covered in ice. Paleoenvironmental reconstructions of these events utilize isotopic systems, such as Δ17O and barium isotopes of barites. Other isotopic systems, such as zinc (Zn), can reflect seawater composition or environmental conditions (e.g., temperature changes) and biological productivity. We report here a multi-isotopic C, O, and Zn data set for carbonates deposited immediately after the Marinoan glaciation (635 Ma) from the Otavi Group in northern Namibia. In this study, we chemically separated calcite and non-calcitic carbonate phases, finding isotopically distinct carbon and oxygen isotopes. These could reflect changes in the source seawater composition and conditions during carbonate formation. Our key finding is largescale Zn isotopic variations over the oldest parts of the distal foreslope cap carbonate sections. The magnitude of variation is larger than any found throughout post-snowball cap carbonates to date, and in a far shorter sequence. This shows a heretofore undiscovered difficulty for Zn isotopic interpretations. The primary Zn sources are likely to be aeolian or alluvial, associated with the massive deglaciation related run-off from the thawing continent and a greater exposed surface for atmospheric aerosol entrainment. The samples with the lightest Zn isotopic compositions (δ66Zn < 0.3 ‰) potentially reflect hydrothermally sourced Zn dominating the carbonates' Zn budget. This finding is likely unique to the oldest carbonates, when the meltwater lid was thinnest and surface waters most prone to upwelling of hydrothermally dominated Snowball Earth brine. On the other hand, local variations could be related to bioproductivity affecting the Zn isotopic composition of the seawater. Similarly, fluctuations in sea-level could bring the depositional site below and above a redoxcline, causing isotopic variations. Abstract—Sedimentation transport of 137Cs can lead to the significant accumulation of this radionuclide at depths that could not be reached through the vertical water exchange alone; therefore, a comparative assessment of its contents for different types of suspended matter (SM) and regions of the Black Sea is of particular interest. For this purpose, we have collected samples of SM and seawater at deep-water and coastal stations for the subsequent determination of the 137Cs activity in the surface water layer. To calculate the fraction of lithogenic matter, the potassium content in the SM was additionally determined. The range of 137Cs content on SM at different stations differed by more than an order of magnitude: from 7 to 111 Bq/kg for specific activity, and from 0.03 to 0.69% for its content on SM, in % of the total content in the surface water layer. Stations located farther away from the coast were characterized by the lowest percentage of 137Cs in SM, while its content at the coastal stations was more variable. The comparison of the lithogenic and biogenic contribution to SM and data on 137Cs for different stations suggests that the content of this radionuclide on SM is primarily determined by the dynamic variations of the lithogenic matter. Based on the 137Cs migration on SM, the Black Sea is divided into at least two types of regions. One regions are water areas far removed from sources of lithogenic matter where SM is formed mainly due to the hydrobiont activity. The 137Cs content in SM due to the predominance of biogenic matter and an insignificant concentration of lithogenic matter in this case accounts for hundredths of a percent of its total content in the surface water layer. Other regions are coastal and shelf water basins, which, on the one hand, are subjected to the significant coastal and river lithogenic runoff, and on the other, they are characterized by the elevated trophicity and biological productivity. In these water areas, 137Cs content on SM owing to the variability of biotic and abiotic factors is more variable and can fluctuate from values typical for the open sea to an order of magnitude higher. In the marine sediment record, concentrations and isotope ratios of chromium (Cr) can be used to reconstruct ocean biogeochemical conditions. These reconstructions rely on a detailed understanding of the chemical pathways that Cr undergoes as it is transferred from the water column to the sediment record. We examined Cr concentrations in marine pore fluids and sediments from six continental margin sites, which can be grouped into two basic environments: (1) sites where sediments are oxygenated and rich in solid phase Mn (herein termed oxic), and (2) sites where sediments are organic C (C org)-rich and oxygen is depleted (anoxic). We found Cr concentrations to be lower (maximum of 12 nM in pore fluids and 124 ppm sediment solid phase) at oxic sites compared with anoxic sites (maximum of 77 nM and 184 ppm). Our findings confirm previously published interpretations of dissolved Cr in pore fluids (Brumsack and Gieskes, 1983; Shaw et al., 1990). In oxic surface sediments, particulate Cr(III) can be oxidised by Mn oxides, which leads to elevated concentrations of dissolved Cr co-occurring at the same depth as elevated Mn concentrations in the sediment. Under these oxidising conditions, down-core sediments contain relatively low solid-phase Cr concentrations. In oxic sediments, Cr speciation reveals that most of the pore fluid Cr is in the Cr(VI) state. At the site where Mn oxide-rich sediments rest below an oxic water column, oxidative loss of Cr from the sediment to the bottom water leads to the lowest estimated Cr burial efficiency of the sites examined here. Under anoxic C org -rich conditions, both pore fluids and sediment solid phases contain high Cr concentrations, with 40–80% of dissolved pore fluid Cr present as Cr(III). This enrichment of Cr appears to be tightly linked to the presence of high total organic carbon (TOC) content and scavenging of Cr by (organic) particles in the water column. Combined, these data highlight the strong dependence of Cr on both sedimentary redox conditions as well as biological productivity. Based on the data from modern continental margin sediments, we propose that Cr concentrations and isotope compositions of the authigenic sediment fraction may record a combination of redox conditions and biological productivity in the water column. If confirmed by Cr isotope analyses, these findings will add support for the notion that Cr may serve as a proxy for ocean biological and chemical sedimentological conditions. Phosphorus (P) availability exerts a strong influence on primary productivity in global oceans. However, its abundance and role as a limiting nutrient prior to the start of the Great Oxygenation Event (GOE) 2.45-2.32 Ga is unclear. Low concentrations of seawater P have been proposed to explain the apparent delay between the early appearance of oxygen-producing Cyanobacteria and the onset of atmospheric oxygenation. We report evidence for seawater precipitation of Ca-phosphate nanoparticles in 2.46--2.40 Ga iron formations deposited on a marine shelf, including shallow-water facies, immediately prior to the onset of the GOE. Our modeling shows that the co-precipitation of Ca-phosphate and ferrous silicate (greenalite) required ferruginous seawater with dissolved P concentrations many orders of magnitude higher than in today's photic zone. If correct, it follows that P availability is unlikely to have suppressed the expansion of Cyanobacteria prior to the GOE. A reservoir of P-rich surface water shortly before 2.40 Ga could ultimately have triggered a rapid rise in atmospheric oxygen by fueling a sharp increase in primary productivity and organic-carbon burial. We speculate that the enigmatic Lomagundi positive carbon-isotope excursion, recorded in 2.32-2.06 Ga shallow-water carbonates, may mark a key step in the transition toward a modern biosphere of high biological productivity controlled by nutrient availability. More than 33 skate species have been registered in the Southwestern Atlantic Ocean (SAO) 34°S, where hotspots of the endemic threatened marine chondrichthyans with high scientific and conservation priorities have been detected. The lack of species-specific landing data highlights the importance of biological data-based methods to determine the vulnerability and productivity of skate species. In this work, we estimated the demographic parameters for the skates Atlantoraja castelnaui, Rioraja agassizi, Sympterygia bonapartii, and Zearaja brevicaudata in SAO, by implementing Leslie matrix models. The finite rate of population growth (ʎ) for the four skate's species ranged from 1.036 (Z. brevicaudata) to 1.196 (R. agassizi). Elasticity analyses and the performance of different harvest strategies show that reducing juvenile catches appears to be one of the most effective management actions for these species since they result in higher survivorship of age classes with more influence in λ. Differences in the biological productivity of the skates suggest that, to achieve sustainable exploitation of skates, the commitment of all stakeholders to improve species-level information is necessary. Pigeon pea hairy root cultures (PPHRCs) have been proven to be a promising alternative for the production of health-beneficial phenolic compounds, such as the most important health-promoting compound, i.e., cajaninstilbene acid (CSA). In this study, PPHRCs were cocultured with live Aspergillus fungi for further improving phenolic productivity via biological elicitation. Aspergillus oryzae CGMCC 3.951 (AO 3.951) was found to be the optimal fungus that could achieve the maximum increment of CSA (10.73-fold increase) in 42-day-old PPHRCs under the inoculum size of mycelia 0.50% and cocultivation time 36 h. More precisely, the contents of CSA in hairy roots and culture media after fungal elicitation increased by 9.87- and 62.18-fold over control, respectively. Meanwhile, the contents of flavonoid glycosides decreased, while aglycone yields increased upon AO 3.951 elicitation. Moreover, AO 3.951 could trigger the oxidative stress and pathogen defense response thus activating the expression of biosynthesis- and ABC transporter-related genes, which contributed to the intracellular accumulation and extracellular secretion of phenolic compounds (especially CSA) in PPHRCs. And PAL2, 4CL2, STS1, and I3′H were likely to be the potential key enzyme genes regulating the biosynthesis of CSA, and ABCB11X1-1, ABCB11, and ABCG24X2 were closely related to the transmembrane transport of CSA. Overall, the cocultivation approach could make PPHRCs more commercially attractive for the production of high-value phenolic compounds such as CSA and flavonoid aglycones in nutraceutical/medicinal fields. And the elucidation of crucial biosynthesis and transport genes was important for systematic metabolic engineering aimed at increasing CSA productivity. Anthropogenic‐induced variations of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) and the associated Deep‐Water Formation (DWF) are a major concern. Using measurements of triple oxygen isotopes in the deep North Atlantic, we present novel evidence for a dramatic decadal to centennial shift in ocean conditions at the source region of DWF. These measurements suggest a recent decrease in the percentage of photosynthetic O2 derived from the source regions of AMOC in the Nordic Seas compared to the Little Ice Age. 1‐D model simulations suggest that a reduction in photosynthetic O2 production can explain the observed decrease. Alternatively, it may indicate a substantial decrease in sea‐ice cover and thus increased air‐sea gas exchange, bringing the isotopic composition of O2 closer to equilibrium with the atmosphere. Our novel data can serve as a benchmark for climate models. Plain Language Summary: In this study, we use the isotopic signature of dissolved oxygen gas in the deep North Atlantic Ocean to demonstrate a recent dramatic change in the Nordic Seas. Water in the deep Atlantic at present was at the surface of the Nordic Seas several hundred years ago, during the Little Ice Age (LIA). The isotopic signature shows that the percentage of oxygen sourced from photosynthesis was greater during the LIA. This may indicate a greater rate of photosynthesis than at present. The carbon cycle is an important process that regulates Earth's evolution. We compare two typical periods, in the Paleoproterozoic and Neoproterozoic, in which many geological events occurred. It remains an open question when modern plate tectonics started on Earth and how it has influenced the carbon cycle through time. In the Paleoproterozoic, intense weathering in a highly CO2 and CH4 rich atmosphere caused more nutritional elements to be carried into the ocean. Terrestrial input boosted high biological productivity, deposition of sediments and the formation of an altered oceanic crust, which may have promoted an increase in the oxygen content. Sediment lubrication and a decrease in mantle potential temperature made cold and deep subduction possible, which carried more carbon into the deep mantle. Carbon can be stored in the mantle as diamond and carbonated mantle rocks, being released by arc and mid‐ocean ridge outgassing at widely different times. Climate changes on the Southwest coast of India have essential impacts on social and economic development, and the ecosystem of Southern India. Here, we present the last 2000 cal yr AD rare earth elemental records of the sediment core from the Cherai, Kerala coast, southwest India. The light rare earth elements (LREE) were the most abundant fraction in the core sediment, followed by medium rare earth elements (MREE) and heavy rare earth elements (HREE). Total REE (ΣREE) showed a significant correlation with fine fractions and Y, Al, Ti, Fe and total organic carbon content of the sediments, suggesting an intrinsic relationship between REE, total organic carbon and fine grain-size fraction. The LREE and MREE were enriched over the MREE due to their high adsorption with the fine fraction. The lack of correlation between terrigenous elements and low Y/Ho elemental ratio suggests a minor shift in the source materials. High ΣREE values during warm (Medieval Warm Period/ Medieval Climate Anomaly (MWP/MCA) and cold Little Ice Age (LIA) periods indicate a high influx of lithogenous materials during these intervals. The negative δCe values except MCA suggest a suboxic condition and the δEu values suggest feldspar-rich source rock material derived from moderately weathered sediments. It also indicates that the REE variations are controlled by factors like river supply, biological productivity and redox condition. A close link between monsoonal precipitation and REE records existed on the southwest coast of India. During the Dark Age Cold Period (DACP)/MWP transition, a sudden increase in monsoon is documented and the monsoon precipitation was further decreased during LIA and Current Warming Period. Cowpea bean [Vigna unguiculata (L.) Walp.] is an important grain legume with agronomic and productive potential under edaphoclimatic conditions in Cuba, but little known and studied in agroecosystems of Pinar del Río. In “San Juan y Martínez” municipality, four cowpea cultivars were established ('INIFAT 93', 'INIFAT 94', 'IPA 206' and 'TITÁN') with the aim of evaluating their growth and yield. The sowing was carried out in spring (04/02/2019), at a frame of 0.60 x 0.15-0.20 m, in a leached Yellowish Ferrallitic soil dedicated to the cultivation of tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum L.). A randomized block experimental design with four treatments (cultivars) and four replicates was used. Higher biological productivity and agricultural yield were obtained in the cultivars 'TITÁN' and 'INIFAT 94', which exceeded more than 32 % the production of 'INIFAT 93', although this reached a harvest index higher than 50 % and all expressed indices of vain pods less than 30 %. The increase in the number of pods with shorter length and greater mass of grains per pod enhanced crop yield. The results suggest the use of 'INIFAT 94' and 'TITÁN' in the production of grains in tobacco agroecosystems of Pinar del Río, but different spatial and temporal arrangements must be studied, the contribution of biomass to the soil, the incidence of pests, among other aspects with influence on the productivity and sustainability of the crop. Anaerobic digestion of organic waste results in production of biogas and a nutrient-rich digestate that has an established use as fertilizer in plant production. This study evaluated use of anaerobic digestate based on a high concentration of organic household waste as a fertilizer in sawdust-based production of oyster mushrooms (Pleurotus ostreatus). Inclusion of 0.5 L of anaerobic digestate (AD) per kg sawdust gave similar productivity in terms of biological efficiency (79.5 ± 5.4 %), and protein concentration (24.7 ± 2.4 % of dry weight (dw)) as standard mushroom substrate (78.1 ± 5.3 %, and 21.9 ± 3.0 % of dw, respectively). However, mushroom growth was impaired at the highest concentration of anaerobic digestate tested, 1 L digestate per kg dw sawdust. Comparison of the AD-fertilized substrate with a mushroom substrate with standard components (sawdust, wheat bran, calcium sulfate) and with similar C/ N -ratio revealed some differences in elemental composition of the fruiting bodies, with an major increase in sodium concentration for the AD-fertilized substrate compared with the standard substrate (413.3 ± 28.9 and 226.7 ± 30.6 mg kg−1 dw, respectively). This difference can be explained by high sodium concentration in the anaerobic digestate, most likely due to inclusion of food scraps from households and restaurants in the biodigester feedstock. Screening of both substrates for a total of 133 micropollutants revealed that total sum of micropollutants was significantly higher in the AD-fertilized substrate (258 ± 12 ng/g dw substrate) than in the standard substrate (191 ± 35 ng/g dw substrate). The western North Pacific and its marginal seas are known for having the highest biological productivity in the world's oceans. Although vertical turbulent mixing is considered important in transporting nutrients to maintain primary production, no research into vertical turbulent nutrient flux based on microstructure measurements has been conducted in this area. Observational and numerical studies over the continental slope in the southeastern Bering Sea indicate the relevance of vertical nitrate and iron flux induced by tidal mixing for maintaining high summer primary production. This research also suggests that the abrupt topography in the path of the Kuroshio and Tsugaru Warm Current act as a hotspot for vertical turbulent nitrate transport from the lower layer. Geological processes influence water chemistry and biological productivity along the Suwannee River and divide the mainstem of the river into 6 distinct ecological reaches (ERs) in Florida. Because of these distinctions, we hypothesized that the Macrochelys suwanniensis (Suwannee Alligator Snapping Turtle) population varies among ERs. During 2011–2013, we sampled two 5-km sites in each ER to investigate spatial variation in relative abundance, sex ratio, size-class distribution, and body size of M. suwanniensis. Capture rates and male body sizes were greater in the middle ERs than in the upstream and downstream ERs. Sex ratios were male-skewed only in the middle ERs. Additional research is needed to understand the ecological drivers of M. suwanniensis population dynamics in this river. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
