1. Mixed-valence state in the dilute-impurity regime of La-substituted SmB6.

Abstract

Homogeneous mixed-valence (MV) behaviour is one of the most intriguing phenomena of f-electron systems. Despite extensive efforts, a fundamental aspect which remains unsettled is the experimental determination of the limiting cases for which MV emerges. Here we address this question for SmB6, a prototypical MV system characterized by two nearly-degenerate Sm2+ and Sm3+ configurations. By combining angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) and x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS), we track the evolution of the mean Sm valence, vSm, in the SmxLa1-xB6 series. Upon substitution of Sm ions with trivalent La, we observe a linear decrease of valence fluctuations to an almost complete suppression at x = 0.2, with vSm ~ 2; surprisingly, by further reducing x, a re-entrant increase of vSm develops, approaching the value of vimp ~ 2.35 in the dilute-impurity limit. Such behaviour departs from a monotonic evolution of vSm across the whole series, as well as from the expectation of its convergence to an integer value for x → 0. Our ARPES and XAS results, complemented by a phenomenological model, demonstrate an unconventional evolution of the MV character in the SmxLa1-xB6 series, paving the way to further theoretical and experimental considerations on the concept of MV itself, and its influence on the macroscopic properties of rare-earth compounds in the dilute-to-intermediate impurity regime.

Abstract

This paper presents the design, characterization and validation of a wearable haptic device able to convey skin stretch, force feedback, and a combination of both, to the user's arm. In this work, we carried out physical and perceptual characterization with eleven able-bodied participants as well as two experiments of discrimination and manipulation task hiring a total of 32 participants. In both the experiments the CUFF was used in conjunction with the Pisa/IIT SoftHand. The first experiment was a discrimination task where the subjects had to recognize the dimension and the softness between pair of cylinder. in the second experiment the subjects were asked to control the robotic hand for grasping objects. After the experiments the subjects underwent to a subjective evaluation of the device. Results of the experiments and questionnaire showed the effectiveness of the proposed device. Thank to its versatility and structure, the device could be a viable solution for teleoperation application, guidance and rehabilitation tasks, including prosthesis applications., Comment: 12 pages, 11 figures, 2 table

Abstract

This paper describes goals and methodologies of the Land Plan for Forest and Natural Environment Management Guidance (PFTI) stemming from the Ri.Selv.Italia national project (within the “Forest Land Planning” 4.2 subproject). The PFTI geographic range of application is at an intermediate level between single forest-management-unit-level plan and regional forest plans, and deals with forest and pastures resources management. PFTI’s main purposes concern forest resource and forest economy analysis and assessment of the benefits that can be provided to local population through a rational forest management, taking into account also the social structure and potential local conflicts. PFTI’s final task is then to weigh up all these issues in order to give specific participated forest management guidelines at a territorial scale. Unlike the forest-management-unit-level plan, whose specific duties are predetermined and fixed, the PFTI is not necessarily a mandatory plan. On the opposite, PFTI should suggest several specific silviculture guidelines and alternative management scenarios.

Abstract

Nowadays lots of answers are required concerning forest management planning. For this reason adopting standard procedures in the planning process is becoming a necessity in the forest sector. The aim of this paper is to identify standard procedures aimed at the division of forest into compartments, in the context of forest management plans. First of all we analyse the bases on which different systems of division into compartments are founded. The approach of subdivision from bottom upwards (or by aggregation) is the most suitable within the present context of sustainable management. The study points out both the potential and the requirements of such an approach. In this way we have identified the characteristics which define and guide the process and which should be gathered in a new key concept: the cultural identity. These characteristics are: forest cover, composition, applicable silviculture, assignable function. The cultural identity - which includes physical, cultural and functional variables - offers a working system and a reasoning method that can be repeated and applied to any situation..

Abstract

In this paper, we set $\eta (G)$ to be the number of conjugacy classes of maximal cyclic subgroups of a finite group $G$. We compute $\eta (G)$ for all metacyclic $p$-groups. We show that if $G$ is a metacyclic $p$-group of order $p^n$ that is not dihedral, generalized quaternion, or semi-dihedral, then $\eta (G) \ge n-2$, and we determine when equality holds.

Abstract

The quasiparticle spectra of atomically thin semiconducting transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) and their response to an ultrafast optical excitation critically depend on interactions with the underlying substrate. Here, we present a comparative time- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (TR-ARPES) study of the transient electronic structure and ultrafast carrier dynamics in the single- and bilayer TMDCs MoS$_2$ and WS$_2$ on three different substrates: Au(111), Ag(111) and graphene/SiC. The photoexcited quasiparticle bandgaps are observed to vary over the range of 1.9-2.3 eV between our systems. The transient conduction band signals decay on a sub-100 fs timescale on the metals, signifying an efficient removal of photoinduced carriers into the bulk metallic states. On graphene, we instead observe two timescales on the order of 200 fs and 50 ps, respectively, for the conduction band decay in MoS$_2$. These multiple timescales are explained by Auger recombination involving MoS$_2$ and in-gap defect states. In bilayer TMDCs on metals we observe a complex redistribution of excited holes along the valence band that is substantially affected by interactions with the continuum of bulk metallic states., Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures

Abstract

Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer (EPDM) rubber foams are widely employed for thermal and acoustic insulation in building construction. However, their installation in confined spaces is often complicated, and the capability of EPDM foams to exhibit shape memory behavior could be a desirable property. In the literature, several works have demonstrated that blending elastomeric matrices with paraffin, a well-known Phase Change Material (PCM), could be an interesting method to obtain shape memory polymers with a tunable switching temperature. In this work, EPDM foams filled with paraffin wax, having a melting temperature of 70[degrees] C, were produced and characterized from a microstructural and thermo-mechanical point of view. By melt compounding and hot pressing, samples were produced, and the PCM content in the foams was varied between 0 and 60 wt% (with respect to the EPDM matrix). The results of the shape memory tests evidenced the crucial role played by the PCM in providing excellent shape fixability for the expanded rubber. Even a limited amount of paraffin (i.e., 20 wt%) was able to raise the strain fixity parameter to a value higher than 80%, and it reached 100% when the paraffin content was increased to 60 wt %. On the other hand, an increased PCM fraction caused a slower recovery process. Consequently, a compromise between a fast recovery and optimum shape fixability should be accepted. These results are promising for the development of novel thermal and acoustic EPDM insulating foams easier to be installed. Abstract

Using angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy, we compare the electronic band structure of an ultrathin (1.8 nm) {\delta}-layer of boron-doped diamond with a bulk-like boron doped diamond film (3 {\mu}m). Surprisingly, the measurements indicate that except for a small change in the effective mass, there is no significant difference between the electronic structure of these samples, irrespective of their physical dimensionality. While this suggests that, at the current time, it is not possible to fabricate boron-doped diamond structures with quantum properties, it also means that nanoscale doped diamond structures can be fabricated which retain the classical electronic properties of bulk-doped diamond, without a need to consider the influence of quantum confinement., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures. please contact the corresponding author to access the supplementary material

Abstract

Magnetotransport constitutes a useful probe to understand the interplay between electronic band topology and magnetism in spintronics devices based on topological materials. A recent theory of Lu and Shen [Phys. Rev. Lett. 112, 146601 (2014)] on magnetically doped topological insulators predicts that quantum corrections $\Delta\kappa$ to the temperature-dependence of the conductivity can change sign during the Curie transition. This phenomenon has been attributed to a suppression of the Berry phase of the topological surface states at the Fermi level, caused by a magnetic energy gap. Here, we demonstrate experimentally that $\Delta\kappa$ can reverse its sign even when the Berry phase at the Fermi level remains unchanged, provided that the inelastic scattering length decreases with temperature below the Curie transition.

Abstract

Hydrogeological field studies rely often on a single conceptual representation of the subsurface. This is problematic since the impact of a poorly chosen conceptual model on predictions might be significantly larger than the one caused by parameter uncertainty. Furthermore, conceptual models often need to incorporate geological concepts and patterns in order to provide meaningful uncertainty quantification and predictions. Consequently, several geologically realistic conceptual models should ideally be considered and evaluated in terms of their relative merits. Here, we propose a full Bayesian methodology based on Markov chain Monte Carlo to enable model selection among 2-D conceptual models that are sampled using training images and concepts from multiple-point statistics. More precisely, power posteriors for the different conceptual subsurface models are sampled using sequential geostatistical resampling and Graph Cuts. To demonstrate the methodology, we compare and rank five alternative conceptual geological models that have been proposed in the literature to describe aquifer heterogeneity at the MAcroDispersion Experiment site in Mississippi, USA. We consider a small-scale tracer test for which the spatial distribution of hydraulic conductivity impacts multilevel solute concentration data observed along a 2-D transect. The thermodynamic integration and the stepping-stone sampling methods were used to compute the evidence and associated Bayes factors using the computed power posteriors. We find that both methods are compatible with multiple-point statistics-based inversions and provide a consistent ranking of the competing conceptual models considered.

21. Probing Fuzzballs with Particles, Waves and Strings

We probe D1D5 micro-state geometries with massless particles, waves and strings. To this end, we study geodetic motion, Klein-Gordon equation and string scattering in the resulting gravitational background. Due to the reduced rotational symmetry, even in the simple case of a circular fuzzball, the system cannot be integrated elementarily. Yet, for motion in the plane of the string profile or in the orthogonal plane to it, one can compute the deflection angle or the phase shift and identify the critical impact parameter, at which even a massless probe is captured by the fuzzball if its internal momentum is properly tuned. We find agreement among the three approaches, thus giving further support to the fuzzball proposal at the dynamical level., Comment: 35 pages. Abstract

We report on the quenching of single Ni adatom moments on Te-terminated Bi2Te2Se and Bi2Te3 topological insulator surfaces. The effect becomes manifested as a missing X-ray magnetic circular dichroism for resonant L3,2 transitions into partially filled Ni 3d states of occupancy n_d = 9.2. On the basis of a comparative study of Ni and Fe using scanning tunneling microscopy and ab initio calculations we are able to relate the element specific moment formation to a local Stoner criterion. While Fe adatoms form large spin moments of m_s = 2.54 mu_B with out-of-plane anisotropy due to a sufficiently large density of states at the Fermi energy, Ni remains well below an effective Stoner threshold for local moment formation. With the Fermi level remaining in the bulk band gap after adatom deposition, non-magnetic Ni and preferentially out-of-plane oriented magnetic Fe with similar structural properties on Bi2Te2Se surfaces constitute a perfect platform to study off-on effects of time-reversal symmetry breaking on topological surface states.

Abstract

Homojunctions between Bi$_2$Se$_3$ and its Mn-doped phase are investigated as a sample geometry to study the influence of spin degrees of freedom on topological insulator properties. $n$ quintuple layers (QLs) of Bi$_2$Se$_3$ are grown ontop of Mn-doped Bi$_2$Se$_3$ by molecular beam epitaxy for $0\le n \le 30\,$QLs, allowing to unhamperedly monitor the development of electronic and topological properties by surface sensitive techniques like angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy. With increasing $n$, a Mn-induced gap at the Dirac point is gradually filled in an "hourglass" fashion to reestablish a topological surface state at $n \sim 9\,$QLs. Our results suggest a competition of upwards and downwards band bending effects due to the presence of an n-p type interface, which can be used to tailor topological and quantum well states independently., Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures

Abstract

The emergence of new SARS-CoV-2 variants poses challenges to global surveillance efforts, necessitating swift actions in their detection, evaluation, and management. Among the most recent variants, Omicron BA.2.86 and its sub-lineages have gained attention due to their potential immune evasion properties. This study describes the development of a digital PCR assay for the rapid detection of BA.2.86 and its descendant lineages, in wastewater samples. By using this assay, we analyzed wastewater samples collected in Italy from September 2023 to January 2024. Our analysis revealed the presence of BA.2.86 lineages already in October 2023 with a minimal detection rate of 2% which then rapidly increased, becoming dominant by January 2024, accounting for a prevalence of 62%. The findings emphasize the significance of wastewater-based surveillance in tracking emerging variants and underscore the efficacy of targeted digital PCR assays for environmental monitoring.

Abstract

In this paper we deal with set-valued maps T:X⇉X⁎ defined on a Banach space X, that are generalized monotone in the sense of Karamardian. Under various continuity assumptions on T, we investigate the regularity of suitable selections of the set-valued map R++T that shares with T the generalized monotonicity properties. In particular, we show that for every quasimonotone set-valued map T satisfying the Aubin property around (y,y⁎)∈gph(T) with y⁎≠0 there exist locally Lipschitz selections of R++T∖{0}. In the last part some notions of Minty points of T are introduced, and their relationship with zeros as well as effective zeros of T is discussed; a correlation is established between these concepts and the broader context of the generalized monotonicity of the map T.

Abstract

Background: Mpox virus (MPXV) has recently spread outside of sub-Saharan Africa. This large multicentre study was conducted in Lombardy, the most densely populated Italian region accounting for more than 40% of Italian cases. The present study aims to: i) evaluate the presence and the shedding duration of MPXV DNA in different body compartments correlating the MPXV viability with the time to onset of symptoms; ii) provide evidence of MPXV persistence in different body compartment as a source of infection and iii) characterize the MPXV evolution by whole genome sequencing (WGS) during the outbreak occurred in Italy. Material and methods: The study included 353 patients with a laboratory-confirmed diagnosis of MPXV infection screened in several clinical specimens in the period May 24th - September 1st, 2022. Viral isolation was attempted from different biological matrices and complete genome sequencing was performed for 61 MPXV strains. Results: MPXV DNA detection was more frequent in the skin (94.4%) with the longest median time of viral clearance (16 days). The actively-replicating virus in cell culture was obtained for 123/377 (32.6%) samples with a significant higher viral quantity on isolation positive samples (20 vs 31, p < 0.001). The phylogenetic analysis highlighted the high genetic identity of the MPXV strains collected, both globally and within the Lombardy region. Conclusion: Skin lesion is gold standard material and the high viral load and the actively-replicating virus observed in genital sites confirms that sexual contact plays a key role in the viral transmission.

Abstract

The high index (441) surface of bismuth has been studied using Scanning Tunnelling Microscopy (STM), Angle Resolved Photoemission Spectroscopy (APRES) and spin-resolved ARPES. The surface is strongly corrugated, exposing a regular array of (110)-like terraces. Two surface localised states are observed, both of which are linearly dispersing in one in-plane direction ($k_x$), and dispersionless in the orthogonal in-plane direction ($k_y$), and both of which have a Dirac-like crossing at $k_x$=0. Spin ARPES reveals a strong in-plane polarisation, consistent with Rashba-like spin-orbit coupling. One state has a strong out-of-plane spin component, which matches with the miscut angle, suggesting its {possible} origin as an edge-state. The electronic structure of Bi(441) has significant similarities with topological insulator surface states and is expected to support one dimensional Quantum Spin Hall-like coupled spin-charge transport properties with inhibited backscattering, without requiring a topological insulator bulk.

Abstract

Homogeneous mixed-valence (MV) behaviour is one of the most intriguing phenomena of f-electron systems. Despite extensive efforts, a fundamental aspect which remains unsettled is the experimental determination of the limiting cases for which MV emerges. Here we address this question for SmB6, a prototypical MV system characterized by two nearly-degenerate Sm2+ and Sm3+ configurations. By combining angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) and x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS), we track the evolution of the mean Sm valence, vSm, in the SmxLa1−xB6 series. Upon substitution of Sm ions with trivalent La, we observe a linear decrease of valence fluctuations to an almost complete suppression at x = 0.2, with vSm ~ 2; surprisingly, by further reducing x, a re-entrant increase of vSm develops, approaching the value of vimp ~ 2.35 in the dilute-impurity limit. Such behaviour departs from a monotonic evolution of vSm across the whole series, as well as from the expectation of its convergence to an integer value for x → 0. Our ARPES and XAS results, complemented by a phenomenological model, demonstrate an unconventional evolution of the MV character in the SmxLa1−xB6 series, paving the way to further theoretical and experimental considerations on the concept of MV itself, and its influence on the macroscopic properties of rare-earth compounds in the dilute-to-intermediate impurity regime. This study reveals a non-monotonic evolution of the mixed-valence character in the SmxLa1−xB6 series, with near-complete suppression of valence fluctuations in the intermediate substitution regime, followed by a re-emergent mixed-valence behavior in the dilute-impurity limit. Abstract

One of the risks that CO2 geological sequestration imposes on the environment is the impact of potential CO2/brine leakage on shallow groundwater. The reliability of reactive transport models predicting the response of groundwater to CO2 leakage depends on a thorough understanding of the relevant chemical processes and key parameters affecting dissolved CO2 transport and reaction. Such understanding can be provided by targeted field tests integrated with reactive transport modeling. A controlled-release field experiment was conducted in Mississippi to study the CO2-induced geochemical changes in a shallow sandy aquifer at about 50 m depth. The field test involved a dipole system in which the groundwater was pumped from one well, saturated with CO2 at the pressure corresponding to the hydraulic pressure of the aquifer, and then re-injected into the same aquifer using a second well. Groundwater samples were collected for chemical analyses from four monitoring wells before, during and after the dissolved CO2 was injected. In this paper, we present reactive transport models used to interpret the observed changes in metal concentrations in these groundwater samples. A reasonable agreement between simulated and measured concentrations indicates that the chemical response in the aquifer can be interpreted using a conceptual model that encompasses two main features: (a) a fast-reacting but limited pool of reactive minerals that responds quickly to changes in pH and causes a pulse-like concentration change, and (b) a slow-reacting but essentially unlimited mineral pool that yields rising metal concentrations upon decreased groundwater velocities after pumping and injection stopped. During the injection, calcite dissolution and Ca-driven cation exchange reactions contribute to a sharp pulse in concentrations of Ca, Ba, Mg, Mn, K, Li, Na and Sr, whereas desorption reactions control a similar increase in Fe concentrations. After the injection and pumping stops and the groundwater flow rate decreases, the dissolution of relatively slow reacting minerals such as plagioclase drives the rising concentrations of alkali and alkaline earth metals observed at later stages of the test, whereas the dissolution of amorphous iron sulfide causes slowly increasing Fe concentrations.

Abstract

Numerical modeling is essential to support natural resource management and environmental policy-making. In the context of CO2 geological sequestration, these models are indispensible parts of risk assessment tools. However, because of increasing complexity, modern numerical models require a great computational effort, which in some cases may be infeasible. An increasingly popular approach to overcome computational limitations is the use of surrogate models. This paper presents a new surrogate modeling approach to reduce the computational cost of running a complex, high-fidelity model. The approach is based on the simplification the high-fidelity model into computationally efficient, lower-fidelity models and on linking them with a mathematical function (linking function) that addresses the discrepancies between outputs from models with different levels of fidelity. The resulting linking function model, which can be developed with small computational effort, can be efficiently used in numerical applications where multiple runs of the original high-fidelity model are required, such as for uncertainty quantification or sensitivity analysis. The proposed approach was then applied to the development of a reduced order model for the prediction of groundwater quality impacts from CO2 and brine leakage for the National Risk Assessment Partnership (NRAP) project.

Abstract

Introduction: Over the years, disease registers have been increasingly considered a source of reliable and valuable population studies. However, the validity and reliability of data from registers may be limited by missing data, selection bias or data quality not adequately evaluated or checked. This study reports the analysis of the consistency and completeness of the data in the Italian Multiple Sclerosis and Related Disorders Register. Methods: The Register collects, through a standardized Web-based Application, unique patients. Data are exported bimonthly and evaluated to assess the updating and completeness, and to check the quality and consistency. Eight clinical indicators are evaluated. Results: The Register counts 77,628 patients registered by 126 centres. The number of centres has increased over time, as their capacity to collect patients. The percentages of updated patients (with at least one visit in the last 24 months) have increased from 33% (enrolment period 2000–2015) to 60% (enrolment period 2016–2022). In the cohort of patients registered after 2016, there were ≥ 75% updated patients in 30% of the small centres (33), in 9% of the medium centres (11), and in all the large centres (2). Clinical indicators show significant improvement for the active patients, expanded disability status scale every 6 months or once every 12 months, visits every 6 months, first visit within 1 year and MRI every 12 months. Conclusions: Data from disease registers provide guidance for evidence-based health policies and research, so methods and strategies ensuring their quality and reliability are crucial and have several potential applications.
