1. Central exclusive production of $W$ boson pairs in $pp$ collisions at the LHC in hadronic and semi-leptonic final states

Abstract

We present a phenomenology study on central exclusive production of $W^+W^-$ boson pairs in proton-proton collisions at the Large Hadron Collider at 14 TeV using the forward proton detectors, such as the ATLAS Forward Proton or the CMS-TOTEM Precision Proton Spectrometer detectors. Final states where at least one of the $W$ bosons decay hadronically in a large-radius jet are considered. The latter extends previous efforts that consider solely leptonic final states. A measurement of exclusive $W^+W^-$ also allows us to further constrain anomalous quartic gauge boson interactions between photons and $W$ bosons. Expected limits on anomalous quartic gauge couplings $a_{0,C}^W$ associated to dimension-six effective operators are derived for the hadronic, semi-leptonic, and leptonic final states. It is found that the couplings can be probed down to one-dimensional values of $a_{0}^W = 3.7\times 10^{-7}$ GeV$^{-2}$ and $a_{C}^W = 9.2 \times 10^{-7}$ GeV$^{-2}$ at $95\%$ CL at an integrated luminosity of 300 fb$^{-1}$ by combining all final states, compared to values of about $a_{0}^W = 4\times 10^{-6}$ GeV$^{-2}$ and $a_{C}^W = 1\times 10^{-5}$ GeV$^{-2}$ at 95\% CL expected for the leptonic channel alone.

8. Performance, intestinal microflora, and wall morphology of weanling pigs fed sodium butyrate

Abstract

Adding organic acids to piglet diets is known to be helpful in overcoming postweaning syndrome, and butyric acid is known to be the main energy source for the epithelial cells of the large intestine and the terminal ileum. This study investigated the effect of sodium butyrate (SB) on in vitro and in vivo swine microflora, piglet growth performance, and intestinal wall morphology. During a 24-h in vitro cecal fermentation, total gas production and maximal rate of gas production were reduced linearly by SB (P < 0.001). Ammonia in cecal liquor was increased linearly by SB after 4, 8, and 24 h of fermentation (P < 0.001). In the in vivo study, 48 piglets housed in individual crates were allotted to 4 treatment groups (12 animals per treatment) for 6 wk. Piglets received a basal diet with a) no addition (control), or with SB at b) 1,000 ppm, c) 2,000 ppm, or d) 4,000 ppm. After 6 wk, 6 animals per treat ment were killed, and samples of intestinal content and mucosa were collected. Sodium butyrate did not improve the animal growth performance. In the cecum, SB increased pH and isobutyric acid concentration (linear, P < 0.05) and tended to increase ammonia concentration (P = 0.056). Intestinal counts of clostridia, enterobacteriaceae, and lactic acid bacteria as well as intestinal mucosal morphology were not affected by feeding SB. This study showed that SB influenced the cecal microflora in an in vitro system, reducing the total gas production but increasing ammonia concentrations. When fed to piglets, SB did not improve the animal growth performance, increased cecal pH, and tended to increase cecal ammonia concentrations. Further studies will be needed to better understand the mechanisms underlying the effects observed when SB is fed to piglets. Abstract

Gluconic acid (GA) derives from the incomplete oxidation of glucose by some Gluconobacter strains. When fed to nonruminant animals, GA is only poorly absorbed in the small intestine and is primarly fermented to butyric acid in the lower gut. This study investigated the effect of GA on in vitro growth response and metabolism of swine cecal microflora and on animal growth performance, intestinal wall morphology, and intestinal microflora. During a 24-h in vitro cecal fermentation, total gas production and maximum rate of gas production were increased by GA (linear, P < 0.001). Ammonia in cecal liquor was reduced by GA after 4, 8, and 24 h of fermentation (quadratic, P < 0.01). After 24 h of fermentation, total short-chain fatty acids, acetic acid, propionic acid, n-butyric acid, acetic to propionic acid ratio, and acetic + butyric to propionic acid ratio were linearly increased by GA (P < 0.001). In the in vivo study, 48 piglets were divided into 4 groups and housed in individual cages for 6 wk. Piglets received a basal diet with a) no addition (control) or with GA addition at b) 3,000 ppm, c) 6,000 ppm, or d) 12,000 ppm. After 6 wk, 4 animals per treatment were killed, and samples of intestinal content and mucosa were collected. Compared with control, GA tended to increase average daily gain (+13 and +14% for GA at 3,000 and 6,000 ppm, respectively; P of the model = 0.11; quadratic, P < 0.05). Daily feed consumption and gain to feed ratio were not influenced by GA. Intestinal counts of clostridia, enterobacteriaceae, and lactic acid bacteria were not affected by GA. Gluconic acid tended to increase total short-chain fatty acids in the jejunum (+174, +87, and +74% for GA at 3,000, 6,000, and 12,000 ppm, respectively; P of the model = 0.07; quadratic, P = 0.07). Morphological evaluation of intestinal mucosa from jejunum, ileum, and cecum did not show any significant differences among treatments. This study showed that feeding GA influences the composition and activity of the intestinal microflora and may improve growth performance of piglets after weaning. Abstract

The digestibility (in vitro), toxicity and metabolic effects of rapeseed (RPH) and sunflower (SPH) protein hydrolysates have been evaluated in a murine animal model. The enzyme Alcalase® was employed to obtain a mild enzymatic hydrolysis of rapeseed and sunflower defatted seed meals (DSM) protein isolates. Both hydrolysates showed higher in vitro digestibility than the respective DSM, presumably as a consequence of the hydrolysis process that they had undergone. In vivo, RPH and SPH were well tolerated. Body and organ weights, biochemical blood parameters from treated male mice were comparable to controls. Food intake was regular in RPH and SPH animals, suggesting a good palatability of the hydrolysates. Not relevant perturbations of the principal hepatic and renal drug metabolism enzymes were observed in RPH or SPH mice. In conclusion, protein hydrolysates from sunflower and rapeseed DSM did not determine relevant toxicological effects; therefore, they could be considered as alternative protein sources and/or food ingredients.

Abstract

Because more than 60% of milk produced in Italy is transformed into cheese, milk economical value strongly depends on cheese yield. Among the factors that influence cheese yield, milk casein and fat content plays a major role: when milk is converted into Grana Padano and Parmigiano Reggiano, three grams of seasoned cheese are produced from one gram of milk casein. Because casein and, to a lower extent, fat determine the economic value of milk, increasing casein production is an essential goal for dairy farmers. The importance of this subject is confirmed by the fact that several related reviews have been published in the past. In general, there is a strict correlation between milk production and cheese yield and this is the reason why, in the past, research mainly aimed at increasing milk production. Still, in order to increase cheese yield, dairy farmers have to increase also casein and fat milk content. In fact, despite the fact that milk casein and fat are mainly influenced by genetic factors, proper management and feeding strategies can increase their concentration in milk. It is well known that casein concentration as well as milk production are higher during the winter season; furthermore, different farms hosting genetically similar animals can achieve different milk yields, showing that paratypic factors can strongly influence milk production. The present paper presents a review of factors that influence casein production in dairy cows.

Abstract

The chapter presents a discussion on intestinal fermentation, including dietary and microbial interactions. The major benefits derived from the use of antibiotics in subtherapeutic doses in animal feeding involve: disease prevention, improved feed efficiency and increased performances, especially for the young stressed animals and where management and hygiene conditions are not excellent. In pig farming, feeding antibiotics is widely practiced around weaning, the time that represents the most challenging period a pig encounters during its life in terms of infection and abundance of stressors. Although the mechanism by which antibiotics promote growth is still under heated debate, the most reliable hypothesis relates to changes in the composition of the intestinal microflora. Some antibiotic-resistant strains of Escherichia coli have evolved compensatory mutations that preclude reversion to the sensitive state, even without selective pressure. At birth, the intestinal tract of pigs is sterile and represents a good niche for rapid proliferation of environmental bacteria. Lactobacilli, streptococci, coliforms and clostridia are the main bacterial groups that can be isolated from gastric content within the first 2–3 hours of life. Along with glucose, other metabolic fuels for the small intestine are represented by the natural polyamines: putrescine, spermidine and spermine. Another category of molecules that can play a role as microbial modulators are the prebiotics, defined as “nondigestible food ingredients” that beneficially affect the host by selectively stimulating the growth and/or activity of one or a limited number of bacteria in the colon.
