In the Spanish language there are few collections of decodable books (Sánchez-Vincitore, 2018) and those available belong to commercial publishers or are for private use. Understanding the importance of explicit and progressive teaching of the alphabetic principle, as well as the need for high-quality texts for reading practice, the USAID-Leer project created a collection of decodable and leveled books to support the learning of reading from girls and boys of the first cycle of primary school. To guarantee that these educational resources can be easily found, accessed, used and distributed (Veras, 2020), the Universidad Iberoamericana (UNIBE) defined a strategy for the open dissemination of this content, also aiming to contribute to the creation of more inclusive knowledge societies (UNESCO, 2019). The initiative has involved the work of the Resource Center for Learning and Research (CRAI-UNIBE) and consists of the creation of a digital collection that organizes, preserves and offers online access to the books created by the project. Previous studies indicate that digital platforms that host this type of resources require software and interfaces designed according to the needs and particular characteristics of their users (DeJongh, 2014). Future actions of the UNIBE strategy and the USAID-Leer project are aimed at responding to this need.

The benefits of scientific collaboration through co-authorship are widely recognized, which has driven a growing trend in the number of authors per document. However, the increase in collaboration has been accompanied by a set of research misconduct, where individuals included as authors in a publication do not actually meet the required criteria for authorship. This article details the criteria that every person must meet to be considered an author of a publication according to the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors. It is the responsibility of the authors, and not the editors of the journal to which the document is submitted, to determine and verify that all persons named as authors meet the four criteria. Finally, the question of whether technology assisted by artificial intelligence (AI) can be considered the author is addressed.

On October 5, 2023, at the Federal University of Amazonas, Faculty of Information and Communication, during the Entrepreneurship discipline, students were led by reflections on innovation in services and information units, focusing on the perspective of users in the 21st century . Thiago Siqueira highlighted the great importance of understanding the dynamic needs of modern users, who are immersed in a constantly evolving digital environment. The class began with an exploration of the challenges faced by librarians as information service providers and the need to understand new needs and searches for information. Students were encouraged to rethink traditional concepts, considering the rapid expansion of technologies and how these changes affect users' expectations. The professor emphasized that innovation must not only be technological, but also cultural, organizational and social. The need for a user-centered approach was discussed, where empathy and a deep understanding of users' needs and desires become the starting point for developing new information services. Students learned about research methods such as interviews and user journey analysis to capture valuable insights. Additionally, the class covered co-creation strategies, encouraging students to collaborate directly with users to create innovative solutions. Inspiring case studies were presented from organizations that have revolutionized their information services by adopting user-centric approaches and incorporating emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence and augmented reality. The discussion also extended to the ethical principles involved in innovation in information services, highlighting the importance of privacy, security and accessibility for all users, regardless of their social, economic or cultural background. On that occasion, students were challenged to think of innovative projects that could significantly improve the experience of information service users. They were encouraged to apply the concepts discussed and work as a team to develop creative, user-oriented solutions. The class provided a deep and practical understanding of how innovation in information services, when guided by empathy and understanding the needs of 21st century users, can create significant and positive impact on society, promoting more accessible education and more effective communication in the ever-changing digital era.

The mobile web, in a nutshell, and simply has to do with the possibility of accessing the World Wide Web through a mobile device, that is, from a cell phone or from a tablet. The attractiveness of mobile communication technologies is that they allow immediate communication on the move, making it easier for people to come into contact with each other, regardless of time and place. Smartphone applications are leading the digital universe and are now close to being what we invest the most time in all digital media. Some of these applications may not seem readily applicable to libraries, but it is necessary to take into account that other public or private entities are making use of these mobile technologies, and that this can be very valuable in triggering new ideas and initiatives, and That innovation in any arena is built on a knowledge base. Therefore, libraries must take into account the technologies that our users are using to offer new, more robust services without making users leave their comfort zones to integrate the services of the library into the behavioral patterns of daily life of people. At its most basic level, an increasing number of libraries are creating mobile versions of their websites to facilitate their users' access to the contents and services offered by the library. These applications provide information on library services and collections, access to catalog search, digital content, location, schedules and thematic guides through formats adapted to the small screen. But the universe of applications goes further, When we talk about mobile applications in libraries we have to take into account at least three areas of application: applications of libraries. Applications of reading and investigation and useful applications for the daily life

Architecture is an inter-disciplinary field, with an emphasis on creative design skills. Students’ questions at the library’s reference desk relating to their studio design work can be classified into seven categories: architectural history, building types, materials and technologies, construction details, design manuals, precedents and case studies, and visual inspiration. Whereas the first six are similar to those encountered in other disciplines, and can be fulfilled in a straightforward manner using standard library search and discovery tools, visual inspiration poses a challenge to students and librarians. Where does this challenge originate? For over a century the tools and methods used by libraries for subject access, have been developed for predominantly textual materials. A key assumption underlying classification and indexing is that a document is about something, and that this something can be expressed in words. But how can this notion of aboutness be extended to a medium using nonverbal symbolism? This implies that the library’s search and discovery tools and the accepted models for information seeking behavior are not well suited for visual searching. Recent studies in human cognition have shown that the brain is capable of rapid image processing, requiring just a few tens of milliseconds to recognize an image that meets a predefined criteria presented among other images. Therefore, browsing images appearing in search results is more efficient than browsing text. This can be implemented by extracting images from documents in databases and library collections, and displaying them as thumbnails in previews of documents that appear in search results.

The research was set to shed light on the utilization of the library and its numerous resources based on the responses of undergrad users at the Federal University Lokoja (FUL) Library. A quantitative research methodology and a survey research design were used to analyze the four research questions posed for this study. The population comprised all registered Library users, and a structured questionnaire served as the research instrument for the study. Sampled responses from the questionnaire were analyzed using descriptive statistical methods with tables and graphs. The study revealed that students' use of Information Resources in the library was mainly for Assignments/Reading, Examinations, and Project writing. Challenges that hinder the effective utilization of information resources are the attitude of librarians and the information literacy/orientation of students finally, increased utilization can be achieved through targetdriven literacy and orientation programs alongside the provision of adequate information resources. The study buttressed the use strategy of Federal University Library Lokoja from the perspective of library users, which gives its novelty. The study has also shed light on possible issues that hinder the optimal use of resources. Finally, the study highlights building better librarians and library environs through literacy programs, training, and reengineering library spaces to cater to other activities like entertainment and fun to improve library use and orient clientele's behaviour.

Normally users of a virtual health library have different professional profiles (physicians, nurses, pharmacists...) and/or they are from different specialties (Primary Health Care, Internal Medicine, Oncology...). This poster shows the experience of the Virtual Health Sciences Library of the Balearic Islands (Bibliosalut) of creating thematic web portals, which aims is to improve the experience of our users to browse and query to information resources and services of the virtual library and to increase its use. Different information resources that Bibliosalut offers were selected for each thematic web portals, according to the interest and frequency of use that they may have for users of professional profiles. From the backend of the Bibliosalut Content Management System (Joomla), the necessary modules were created to present the selected information in various thematic web portals: featured resources, e-journals and e-books of each specialty that are available in the virtual library, journals of each specialty with impact factor ISI, clinical practice guidelines, useful links, etc., as well as featured information of library services, such as training courses from the Users Training Service of Bibliosalut aimed at specific groups. Nowadays, we are working to offer more thematic web portals of others specialties to Bibliosalut users and in the future we are going to evaluate their satisfaction about the usefulness of creating these thematic web portals. The result is a bilingual website (Catalan and Spanish), which consists of a main home page (www.bibliosalut.com) with a sort of thematic home pages, and customized URLs depending on the specialty or the professional profile of the users of the virtual library (e.g. Bibliosalut for Primary Health Care professionals: www.bibliosalut.com/ap). In addition, it includes several sections with information resources (data bases, e-journals, e-books, and the like) available for each specialty in Bibliosalut. We believe that the presentation of information in a virtual health library, highlighting the most useful resources and the most used by professionals who have a specific profile or a specific specialty, will help the usability of the web, it will improve the experience of our users to browse and it will increase/promote the use of information resources and services of Bibliosalut.

Because of a variety of procedures related to design and presentation of web content and structure, there would be a pressing need to consider issues of quality of web information in upcoming years. It is argued, in the current paper, that evaluation issues related to credibility and quality assessments are of high importance in web environment in comparison with traditional information environments. Some evaluation skills like authority, coverage, currency, objectivity, accuracy, critical thinking and information literacy all of which could be categorized as Web Literacy would be fruitful in doing so. There exists, however, lack of evaluation skills among users caused by their cognitive styles, prior knowledge, information skills and of web resources characteristics as well. Some other solutions like dialectical reading, information ethics and also institutional policymaking will also be taken into account at the end of the paper.

The aim of this paper is to identify and summarize potential antecedents and variables that promote or impede knowledge sharing in libraries. A systematic literature review (meta-synthesis of empirical research) was carried out using a systematic data extraction technique to locate, retrieve, select, classify, and review 21 scholarly articles, published during 2015-2016 both quantitative and qualitative, relating to antecedents and barriers to the sharing of knowledge in libraries. The study noted minimal research on the sharing of knowledge in libraries in terms of both theoretical and realistic implementations. From the analysis of findings of these studies, six main themes have emerged. The results reported in the literature indicate that the attitudes and behaviour of LIS professionals differ from country to country, depending on their needs and circumstances. In addition, findings in the literature have revealed that the major obstacles hindering knowledge sharing (KS) are lack of time, trust, communication, financial support, top management support, technical support, and staff training. This study can be useful for researchers and librarians because it provides a conceptual framework for further studies on knowledge sharing from the perspective of libraries and information institutions.

In order to promote an informationally inclusive university environmen, the first results of a research project that analyzes the level of accessibility to information of the Complutense University of Madrid are presented. Its response capacity is also studied so that people from the university community with functional diversity can access information. Initially, a diagnosis is made of three areas: the Complutense University website, the virtual campus and the library. A qualitative methodology, the interview, is applied to a sample of users with functional diversity to describe their informational behavior and their needs, habits and difficulties related to information. Interviews are also applied with those responsible for managing and maintaining the web portal, reviewing its services from the user's perspective, using specialized tools and software. In addition, an analysis of the policy of the Complutense University was carried out to take on the challenge of global accessibility, and the level of accessibility of teaching materials, their contents and formats, taking as a model the international guidelines of the W3C (World Wide Web Consortium).

Libraries often intimidate new or potential users through their size, complexity as well as unfamiliar tools and technology. Observing library users coping with the environment and perceiving their behavior, assists in planning and designing an ideal guidance system. The present article is based on an observation of university library users in Mumbai. The study provides narratives of variety of tasks completed by participants with average task completion time (ATCT) and further explores users’ facial expressions and behavior and conducted cause analysis. Findings revealed that majority of participants in university libraries felt that wayfinding is complex and not self-oriented even after attending library orientation, due to the complexity of library buildings and lack of appropriate signage. The analysis of ATCT highlighted that maximum users of the university libraries in Mumbai require inordinate time to find their way and locate the required information source. Many participants experienced confusion, disorientation, indecisiveness and anxiousness while navigating and searching for information sources in libraries. It further revealed that major reasons behind prolonged time required in task completion were user-specific such as user unawareness about library physical settings, classification schemes, floor-wise splits in stacking arrangement, availability of facilities, etc. The observational findings and recommendations lead to serve as a starting point in defining patron orientation needs

The library provides its services to satisfy the user’s approach. This study is done to assess users’ attitudes towards the retrieval of the Bengali document in OPAC through subject headings. It also traces users’ perceptions regarding subject access highlighting the problems in the retrieval of Bengali documents by subject in OPACs. It can be inferred that some features are required to be incorporated to improve the functionality of the OPACs and thereby to satisfy users’ requirements. Results revealed that search experience using subject headings is not satisfactory. Keywords search rather performs better but due to redundancy of search, it is hard to retrieve required documents in the least possible time. It is also revealed that fewer perform known-item searches and their success rates for these searches are generally good. Thus, the findings demand standard principles and rules for the construction of Bengali Subject Headings. As per the need of new-age users, an efficient OPAC search facility can be developed where there will be a chance for ranking information retrieval.

Given the focus on Information Literacy in an academic context, this contribution to the “Torrossa Retreat 2013” examines the Torrossa platform as a tool for bibliographical research. First, we will consider the educational objectives and methods that should be taken into account when organizing training activities in order to develop information skills, according to international guidelines and standards for Information Literacy. Secondly, using the example of an Italian University Library (Milano-Bicocca), we will observe various Information Literacy-based activities both online and on-site. We will outline indications of efficiency and effectiveness and review data gathered from a Customer Satisfaction survey. We will then put forward a useful model to guide users through the search process, and provide examples of preparatory activities necessary prior to the use of search tools, from subject analysis to the determination of search strategies. Finally, we will look at the various search functions offered by the Torrossa platform and offer a SWOT (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, Threats) analysis, demonstrating the following aspects: the utility of the resource as a search tool for the Humanities and Social Sciences, the importance of continual content development and enrichment, the need for further promotion of the resource and for greater user training.

In order to provide seamless user experiences, the brand new libraries are far better positioned. They do not have to manage much in print, at least for the journal section, but huge electronic collection accessible via Internet. They do not worry about migrating to new systems or technology; they just start with whatever the latest available in the market, whether it is new generation ILMS, discovery tools, content management systems, mobile technologies, cloud computing etc. Patrons’ expectations for seamless experience are met - regardless of their location, device and service they opted for. The story of the two and half years old, Saudi Arabia’s brand new King Abdullah University of Science and Technology’s Library is not different. Huge amount of electronic resources also provide ever increasing challenges to the new generation libraries in collecting, organizing and delivering the right information, to the right person at the right time. Implementation of a good ILMS supported with better electronic resource management features will help in setting the house right. Well-designed user interfaces, supported with the web scale discovery tools will help the users to have a better search experience. Availability of library collection through the campus mobile applications, latest proxy technologies for out-campus access and integrating the resources to the campus e-learning platform are the main features of the library’s seamless experiences. Libguide platform is used for the first time in Saudi Arabia, to create online research guides by subject librarians. An institutional repository, based on D-Space platform is about to release. Ninety percent of our collection is online; they are purchased, organized and accessed online, like any other brand new academic research libraries. Analysis of usage statistics of different resources show that they are highly used and usage is increased over two years, as the technology improved and implemented.

Virtual worlds are objects of much research. Such research is needed for future wider application within education, science field or market domain. For instance, Hype cycle presents that virtual worlds are coming in productive phase in 5-10 years. Virtual world as we know today are not user friendly or effective as a seriously used communication tool. Of course, there is a lot of progress in this area. Let me consider Facebook plug-in for instance, which brings much easier login process compared to Second Life or Open Simulator installed client. Second thing could be release of SL Viewer 2.0. However, studies show that there are a lot of users demotivated or disappointed from the virtual world`s environment and after their first visit they never come back. That has to change. Paper focuses at the problem from Information science point of view. Specifically, the author takes user-centered design as a core approach, which is needed to improve software usability. Usability as a broader term for experienced usability, apparent usability, user friendliness, quality of user interface, etc. must be measured and evaluated. The target of the paper is to present methodology of testing and evaluating virtual world environments. Paper summarizes core steps within user-center design, which is user task analysis, expert guidelines-based evaluation, formative user-centered evaluation, summative comparative evaluation. More closely, user task analysis contains pre-research, which is needed for understanding of users` needs, their work culture and their work goals, which they perform daily. There are work scenarios developed within expert guidelines-based evaluation and then users go through them within formative user-centered evaluation. After redesign of environment users go through two or more variations of developed user interfaces and analyze which one is better. There is going to be a short overview of the virtual region VIAKISK within Open Simulator presented as well.

Is your library implementing or considering a “discovery” technology? Are you wondering if this will really bring into relief everything your users are “licensed to read”? Are you considering what the effects may be for public-facing services such as reference and instruction, or just curious about experiences at other libraries? Academic librarians using two different discovery products, EBSCO Discovery Service (EDS) and Summon, will consider the transformative potential of these tools in light of the learning outcomes that guide us. Drawing from our experiences, we will discuss possibilities, issues and questions that emerge in a discovery environment, including: - ways to conceptualize information literacy - consequent changes to practices in reference and instruction - technical decisions/infrastructure - implications for user experience - proliferation of entry points - issues related to branding and wayfinding
