Manganese is one of the heavy metals that is a major environmental concern when present in large amount. Manganese is discarded into water systems by numerous industries, including mining, batteries and electroplating etc. Pineapple leaves were applied as a biomass source to produce a magnetic hydrothermal treated hydochar nanocomposite; Fe3O4-HC. The BET surface area of Fe2O3-HC nanocomposite was 21.27 m2/g. Batch adsorption experiments revealed that the uptake of Mn2+ fit well in the pseudo second kinetics model, while the adsorption isotherm best fit the Freundlich model, with a maximum adsorption capacity of 2.99 mg/g at 25 °C and a pH of 5. The obtained thermodynamic parameters demonstrated that Mn2+ ion adsorption using the Fe2O3-HC nanocomposite was endothermic and nonspontaneous. Additionally, Fe2O3-HC nanocomposite demonstrated to be highly selective towards Mn2+ ions in the presence of other ions. The removal percentage of Mn2+ from a real water sample spiked with 50 mg/L Mn2+ was reported to be 53.2%. The spent adsorbent was then used to detect latent fingerprints, which revealed that Mn2+-Fe2O3-HC nanocomposite generated better and clear latent fingerprints than Fe2O3-HC nanocomposite.

This work provides a novel approach to prepare nitrogen-doped carbon nanoparticles (CNPs) coated on a cerium oxide nanorods nanocomposite (N-CNPs/CeO2NRsnC) for the uptake of cadmium (Cd2+) ions and re-using the spent adsorbent, Cd2+-CNPs/CeO2NRsnC for latent fingerprint detection (LFP). N-CNPs were prepared by a thermal method with urea and cabbage powder as precursors. N-CNPs/CeO2NRsnC was developed with N-CNPs and CeO2NRs with a hydrothermal method and characterized by various instrument methods like UV-visible, FT-IR, XRD, BET, XPS, SEM, and TEM. The N-CNPs/CeO2NRsnC had a greater surface area (9.96 m2/g) than N-CNPs (0.64 m2/g). The synthesized N-CNPs/CeO2NRsnC proved to be a good sorbent material to remove Cd2+ from water at a maximum pH 8 and dosage 10 mg/L. The adsorption was spontaneous and endothermic at 25 ºC. In addition, Cd2+-N-CNPs/CeO2NRsnC has been shown to be sensitive and selective for LFP identification on several porous substrates. It is therefore a good labeling agent for latent fingerprint identification in forensic science.

This study underlines a latest approach of preparing nitrogen carbon nanoparticles fused on zinc oxide nanoparticle nanocomposite (N-CNPs/ZnONP nanocomposite) for the uptake of copper ions (Cu 2+ ) from wastewater using a sol gel method. The metal loaded adsorbent was then applied in the latent fingerprint application. N-CNPs/ZnONP nanocomposite proved to be a good sorbent for the optimal adsorption of Cu 2+ at pH 8 and 1.0 g/L dosage. Langmuir isotherm best fitted the process with the maximum adsorption capacity of 285.71 mg/g that was superior to most values reported in other studies for the removal of Cu 2+ . At 25 °C, the adsorption was spontaneous and endothermic. Furthermore, Cu 2+ -N-CNPs/ZnONP nanocomposite revealed to be sensitive and selective for latent fingerprint (LFP) identification on a variety of porous surfaces. The removal of toxic heavy metals from wastewater through the use of novel adsorbents is expensive. The challenge arises after the heavy metal is removed by the adsorbent, and the fate of the adsorbent is not taken care of. This may create secondary pollution. The study aimed to prepare mesoporous carbon (MC) from macadamia nutshells coated with titanium dioxide nanoparticles (TiO 2 NPs) using a hydrothermal method to remove Pb 2+ and to test the effectiveness of reusing the lead-loaded spent adsorbent (Pb 2+ -MC/TiO 2 NP nanocomposite) in blood fingerprint detection. The samples were characterized using SEM, which confirmed spherical and flower-like structures of the nanomaterials, whereas TEM confirmed a particle size of 5 nm. The presence of functional groups such as C and Ti and a crystalline size of 4 nm were confirmed by FTIR and XRD, respectively. The surface area of 1283.822 m 2 /g for the MC/TiO 2 NP nanocomposite was examined by BET. The removal of Pb 2+ at pH 4 and the dosage of 1.6 g/L with the highest percentage removal of 98% were analyzed by ICP-OES. The Langmuir isotherm model best fit the experimental data, and the maximum adsorption capacity of the MC/TiO 2 NP nanocomposite was 168.919 mg/g. The adsorption followed the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. The Δ H° (-54.783) represented the exothermic nature, and Δ G° (-0.133 to -4.743) indicated that the adsorption process is spontaneous. In the blood fingerprint detection, the fingerprint details were more visible after applying the Pb 2+ -MC/TiO 2 NP nanocomposite than before the application. The reuse application experiments showed that the Pb 2+ -MC/TiO 2 NP nanocomposite might be a useful alternative material for blood fingerprint enhancement when applied on nonporous surfaces, eliminating secondary pollution., Competing Interests: The authors declare no competing financial interest., (© 2023 The Authors. The presence of pollutants in large swaths of water is among the most pressing environmental issues of our time. This is mainly due to the inappropriate disposal of industrial sewerage into nearby water supplies and the production of a broad range of potentially hazardous contaminants. Pineapple is a fruit mainly grown in tropical regions. Refuse production begins with the collection of raw materials and continues prior to being refined. Pineapple processing industries generate waste (peel, core, pomace, and crown) that is high in bioactive compounds. The byproducts often include more valuable compounds with greater nutritional and therapeutic value than the final product. This review focuses on the application of pineapple and components, adsorbent synthesized from pineapple for the removal of pollutants.

Living organisms are created by carbohydrate biopolymers such as chitosan, carboxymethyl cellulose, alginate and lignin. These carbohydrate biopolymers have been extensively used for environmental applications because they are bio-degradable, bio-compatible, non-toxic and inexpensive. Recently, carbohydrate biopolymers have been used to prepare different nanocomposite adsorbents for treatment of wastewater. These adsorbents explored the removal effectiveness of inorganic pollutants from aqueous solution. This review article discusses the synthesis and application of chitosan, carboxymethyl cellulose, alginate and lignin nanocomposites as adsorbents for heavy metals. Toxic metals can be efficiently absorbed by cross-linkers, distributed in aqueous solutions of divalent heavy metal ions to examine their polymer absorption capacity. These nanocomposites were used for the adsorption of highly toxic metals such as Cd 2+ , Pb 2+ and Zn 2+ in water. To make heavy metal ion uptake more effective, more functionalization has been implemented such as blending, grafting, or mixing with different nanomaterials with an extra functional group. The integration of the second part into the main polymer chain not only adds functionality but also increases mechanical efficiency, one of the core criteria for adsorbent recyclability. The remediation method of metal ions from wastewater is cheaper as long as the adsorbent is reused. Furthermore, they exhibited good performance for the reuse of spent adsorbents after adsorption-desorption processes including latent fingerprint detection with nanomaterials by using the powder dusting method. Chitosan, carboxymethyl cellulose, alginate and lignin based nanocomposites have demonstrated better adsorption activities due to great physical and chemical properties for the chelation of heavy metals such as Cd 2+ , Pb 2+ and Zn 2+ from water and also higher regeneration with various eluents after several desorption-adsorption cycles. In addition, reuse of the spent adsorbents in latent fingerprint detection with different nanomaterials is discussed.
