Este artigo pretende contribuir para as discussões sobre novos movimentos sociais fornecendo elementos sobre as respostas sociais à epidemia de sida. O contexto escolhido é o da cidade de Nova Iorque, e a questão central é o papel deste novo movimento social na produção e negociação do conhecimento relevante para intervenção na epidemia. Diferenciamos três momentos dessa resposta: (1) a formação de grupos de acção social com base no voluntariado e orientados para a auto-ajuda de base comunitária, e a definição da identidade de “pessoa com sida” (PWA); (2) a erupção de grupos radicais de acção política, reivindicação e pressão junto das instituições de administração, pesquisa e produção farmacêutica, e a intensificação da participação activista na produção de conhecimentos médicos relevantes para intervir na epidemia, incluindo as tentativas de ensaios clínicos populares; (3) o declínio do activismo de rua e a institucionalização de grupos sociais especializados no acompanhamento da produção científica biomédica e na elaboração de recomendações de investigação relevantes para as comunidades afectadas. With an account of the social responses to AIDS in New York City, this article provides data to the current discussions on new social movements and on the social production of knowledge. The social movement responding to AIDS in New York is analysed in three periods: (I) the raise of volunteer and self-help groups and the definition of PWA (people with AIDS) identity; (2) the upheaval of activist groups oriented towards high-visibility political intervention and specialization on clinical and pharmaceutical knowledge relevant to AIDS, with street demonstrations, media intervention, political lobbies, and also the first community-based clinical trials; (3) the decline of street politics and the institutionalization of groups specialized on monitoring science and making research as wel1 as policy recommendations relevant to their constituency of people with AIDS.

No presente artigo é feita uma micro-etnografia da urbanidade lisboeta contemporânea dando realce à sobreposição e combinações de sistemas de práticas e crenças relacionados com a saúde e a doença, tal como se encontram num segmento da cidade que serve de ponte a vários mundos: a Rua de São Lázaro, com o seu nome, os seus hospitais e postos de atendimento, o percurso entre a faculdade de medicina, a estátua de Sousa Martins, a morgue, as funerárias, as diversas lojas étnicas e, finalmente, a variedade do Martim Moniz, a que não faltam as casas de produtos mágicos e feitiços de origem cultural múltipla. This micro-ethnography of contemporary urban Lisbon emphasizes the ways in which different systems of beliefs and practices of health and illness overlap and intertwine. The empirical setting is the street of São Lázaro, in downtown Lisbon. This particular street links several worlds and ways of managing health and illness — a medical school, the spiritualist cult of Sousa Martins, major hospitals, a morgue and funeral homes. It also houses, stores selling ethnic products, and the cosmopolitan commercial assemblage of Martim Moniz, where devices for magic and witchcraft of different cultural origins can be bought.

In this paper I will analyze the identity narratives of Goan doctors under Portuguese colonial rule. Such narratives account for two contrasting styles of self-presentation: first, they emphasize the connection between Goan doctors and the colonial endeavor, portraying military physicians as a kind of civilizing heroe in Africa; second, the narratives point to the marginal and subaltern role of Goan medical school graduates within the Portuguese colonial system. I will explore the relationship between these two opposing styles and suggest how identity-building efforts crystallized in a set of narratives about the history of medicine in India that highlights colonial links and obscures native contributions to medical knowledge. Data will be drawn from interviews with elderly Goan doctors, trained before 1961, from published historical accounts of medical teaching in India, and from documents written either to celebrate the existence of the Medical School of Goa or to analyze and intervene in the situation of Goan doctors serving in the colonies. Neste artigo são analisadas as narrativas identitárias dos médicos de Goa durante o domínio colonial português. Estas narrativas desenvolvem dois estilos contrastantes de auto-representação: por um lado, enfatizam a ligação entre os médicos de Goa e a empresa colonial, retratando os médicos militares como uma espécie de heróis civilizadores em África; por outro, revelam o papel marginal e subalterno dos médicos formados pela Escola Médica de Goa no contexto do sistema colonial português. Explora-se no artigo a relação entre estes dois estilos opostos e sugere-se que essa construção identitária se cristalizou num conjunto de narrativas sobre a história da medicina na Índia, na qual os laços coloniais são realçados e as contribuições nativas para o conhecimento médico são ocultadas. Esta reflexão tem por base dados relativos a entrevistas com médicos de Goa formados antes de 1961, registos históricos publicados sobre o ensino da medicina na Índia e documentos produzidos com a intenção de celebrar a existência da Escola Médica de Goa ou de analisar, para nela intervir, a situação dos médicos de Goa que prestavam serviço nas colónias.

In this article, I discuss the role of plantation museums in confronting, legitimizing, and filtering the racialized violence on which the plantation economy stood. I start with a brief review of the literature on plantation societies, discuss the plantation–race nexus, and highlight the renewed interest in plantations raised by contemporary approaches to the environment, the Anthropocene, cropscapes, and nonhuman agencies. Next, I compare different modes of instrumentalizing and displaying the memory of the plantation, some of which are critical of its violence, and some of which are oblivious to it. Some are focused on technical aspects of sugar production, while others are focused on its labor force. Finally, I present in detail Hawai‘i's Plantation Village in Waipahu, O‘ahu. This community-based museum is designed in accordance with the prevailing narrative of a multiethnic Hawai‘i. While it provides visitors with an overview of the plantation experience in general, not excluding the discipline and violence endured by laborers, its main focus is on the specific cultural heritage of each one of the nationalities that arrived in Hawai‘i to work in sugar. I argue that the museum project is consistent with an idealized view of Hawai‘i's society as a multiethnic racial paradise. This image emerged in the 1920s and helped expunge from collective perception the racialized hierarchies that structured the labor force while also erasing from the picture the structural tension between natives and settlers regarding the appropriation of land and subsequent rights, entitlements, and impediments. I further argue that the presentation of a collective heritage composed of multiple distinct identities originating in the plantation era provides a tool that counterweights the unresolved and unsettled tensions of the contemporary post-plantation world.

The article celebrates Brazilian anthropologist Gilberto Velho (Rio de Janeiro, 1945-2012) by commenting on his influence and impact on Portuguese scholarship. The author describes her first contact with the book A Utopia Urbana, an original monograph about living in Rio’s Copacabana neighborhood. She describes the impact of the book at a time when Portuguese and Brazilian anthropologists hardly knew of one another; she further describes how that estrangement gave way to intense academic interchange between the two communities, a change in which Gilberto Velho had an important role., O artigo homenageia o antropólogo brasileiro GiIberto Velho (Rio de Janeiro, 1945-2012) e comenta a sua influência em Portugal. A autora descreve o seu primeiro contacto com A Utopia Urbana e a abertura de horizontes que a sua leitura induziu num tempo em que o contraste entre o que se praticava em Portugal e no Brasil nos anos 1970-1980 era máximo e o desconhecimento mútuo era quase total. Seguidamente narra como essa separação deu lugar a um frutífero intercâmbio entre as antropologias brasileira e portuguesa, em particular no campo dos estudos urbanos, tendo sido o próprio Gilberto Velho uma figura central nessa aproximação.

Após uma revisão das combinações terreno-arquivo em trabalhos prévios, abordo as migrações de madeirenses e açorianos para o Hawaii. Contrasto um tema da oralidade, que as associa à familiaridade com o cultivo de açúcar na Madeira e de ananases nos Açores, com os resultados da pesquisa documental, que permitem situar esta migração num contexto de economia de plantação com necessidades de trabalho intensivo – num primeiro momento sob uma monarquia indígena cosmopolita a braços com o declínio demográfico e políticas de repovoamento através da migração, e, num segundo momento, enquanto território anexado a uma das novas potências do século XX, os EUA. No conjunto, perto de 20 mil ilhéus portugueses migraram para o Hawaii e ali constituíram sociedade, recortando uma das identificações de ancestralidade reconhecidas, separadas e discutidas nos estudos de etnicidade. Sugiro que esta discussão ajuda a ultrapassar alguns fechamentos da escola sociológica de Chicago e estudos de etnogénese produzidos até hoje, propondo em alternativa um estudo das dinâmicas de racialização hierarquizada pela posição no trabalho. After reviewing field-archive combinations in previous research, I address Madeiran and Azorean migration to Hawaii. I discuss the contrast between the orally-transmitted theme that connects their migration to their familiarity of sugar cane and pineapple growing and what emerges from the archive, which indicates that it occurred in the context of a labor-intensive sugar plantation economy both under indigenous Hawaiian cosmopolitan monarchy and after annexation to the USA. In the end, almost 20,000 Portuguese islanders moved to Hawaii and made society there, shaping one distinct identification and ancestry group, thoroughly addressed by Chicago school sociologists and ethnicity scholars. I conclude suggesting to overcome current limitations in ethnicity/ethnogenesis studies by focusing on the hierarchized dynamics of racialization operated by the plantation system and its labor hierarchies.
