Household Food Insecurity (HFI) is a frequent challenge for children living in poverty that impacts social, emotional, and behavioral development. Federally assisted meal programs, such as the National School Breakfast Program, address HFI for students living in poverty through free or reduced-price breakfast. However, there are challenges for students to take advantage of this opportunity, and it is underutilized. In this research, all middle school students at a high poverty school were offered a free of charge meal alternative called Second Chance Breakfast. Since this program was started, student participation in school breakfast increased and behavior incidences in school dropped significantly. Along with improved behavior outcomes, teachers reported improved student academic behavior.

The purpose of this study was to investigate an interdisciplinary international service learning program and its impact on student sense of cultural awareness and competence using the Campinha-Bacote's (2002) framework of cultural competency model. Seven undergraduate and one graduate student from Human Development and Nutrition Science disciplines participated in the program. Reflections from a synthesis paper post-travel were analyzed using an inductive approach. Six themes emerged from the reflective journals and were applied to Campinha-Bacote's cultural competency constructs. Participating and learning together while reflecting helped deepen and progress this process for ISL students. Overall, the experience proved to be an effective educational tool for sensitizing students towards cultural competency within interdisciplinary programs.

Background: Although psychiatric disorders have been associated with reduced immune responses to other vaccines, it remains unknown whether they influence COVID‐19 vaccine effectiveness (VE). This study evaluated risk of COVID‐19 hospitalization and estimated mRNA VE stratified by psychiatric disorder status. Methods: In a retrospective cohort analysis of the VISION Network in four US states, the rate of laboratory‐confirmed COVID‐19‐associated hospitalization between December 2021 and August 2022 was compared across psychiatric diagnoses and by monovalent mRNA COVID‐19 vaccination status using Cox proportional hazards regression. Results: Among 2,436,999 adults, 22.1% had ≥1 psychiatric disorder. The incidence of COVID‐19‐associated hospitalization was higher among patients with any versus no psychiatric disorder (394 vs. 156 per 100,000 person‐years, p < 0.001). Any psychiatric disorder (adjusted hazard ratio [aHR], 1.27; 95% CI, 1.18–1.37) and mood (aHR, 1.25; 95% CI, 1.15–1.36), anxiety (aHR, 1.33, 95% CI, 1.22–1.45), and psychotic (aHR, 1.41; 95% CI, 1.14–1.74) disorders were each significant independent predictors of hospitalization. Among patients with any psychiatric disorder, aHRs for the association between vaccination and hospitalization were 0.35 (95% CI, 0.25–0.49) after a recent second dose, 0.08 (95% CI, 0.06–0.11) after a recent third dose, and 0.33 (95% CI, 0.17–0.66) after a recent fourth dose, compared to unvaccinated patients. Corresponding VE estimates were 65%, 92%, and 67%, respectively, and were similar among patients with no psychiatric disorder (68%, 92%, and 79%). Conclusion: Psychiatric disorders were associated with increased risk of COVID‐19‐associated hospitalization. However, mRNA vaccination provided similar protection regardless of psychiatric disorder status, highlighting its benefit for individuals with psychiatric disorders. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background The epidemiology of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) continues to develop with emerging variants, expanding population-level immunity, and advances in clinical care. We describe changes in the clinical epidemiology of COVID-19 hospitalizations and risk factors for critical outcomes over time. Methods We included adults aged ≥18 years from 10 states hospitalized with COVID-19 June 2021–March 2023. We evaluated changes in demographics, clinical characteristics, and critical outcomes (intensive care unit admission and/or death) and evaluated critical outcomes risk factors (risk ratios [RRs]), stratified by COVID-19 vaccination status. Results A total of 60 488 COVID-19–associated hospitalizations were included in the analysis. Among those hospitalized, median age increased from 60 to 75 years, proportion vaccinated increased from 18.2% to 70.1%, and critical outcomes declined from 24.8% to 19.4% (all P <.001) between the Delta (June–December, 2021) and post-BA.4/BA.5 (September 2022–March 2023) periods. Hospitalization events with critical outcomes had a higher proportion of ≥4 categories of medical condition categories assessed (32.8%) compared to all hospitalizations (23.0%). Critical outcome risk factors were similar for unvaccinated and vaccinated populations; presence of ≥4 medical condition categories was most strongly associated with risk of critical outcomes regardless of vaccine status (unvaccinated: adjusted RR, 2.27 [95% confidence interval {CI}, 2.14–2.41]; vaccinated: adjusted RR, 1.73 [95% CI, 1.56–1.92]) across periods. Conclusions The proportion of adults hospitalized with COVID-19 who experienced critical outcomes decreased with time, and median patient age increased with time. Objective: To examine associations between self-reported vehicular travel behaviors, perceived stress, food procurement practices, and body mass index among female Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) participants. Analysis: The authors used correlation and regression analyses to examine cross-sectional associations between travel time and distance, perceived stress, food procurement practices (grocery shopping frequency, fast-food consumption, home meal consumption), and body mass index among female SNAP participants aged 20-65 years (n = 215) in eastern North Carolina. Results: There were positive associations (P less than 0.05) between travel patterns and stress (r = 0.18 for average miles traveled), grocery shopping frequency (r = 0.16 for average miles traveled), and fast-food consumption (r = 0.19 for average miles traveled, r = 0.29 for average minutes traveled). Conclusions and Implications: SNAP education materials should focus on healthful interactions with the food environment, even when participants must travel long distances. (Contains 2 tables.)

Recently, televisual programs such as TV Land's Younger (2015), Freeform's The Bold Type (2017), The CW's Charmed reboot (2018), and Netflix's Sex Education (2019) joined consumer culture's era of popular feminism by hailing audiences through feminist appeals. Pilot episodes sell series to network executives and viewers – establishing series' central tensions. Thus, we analyze how feminism operates in these series' pilots, attending to their narrative premises and televisual styles. Situating this analysis within the frameworks of postfeminism, girl power, and popular feminism, we trace an overlapping continuum of feminist iterations, from individualized feminism on Younger to corporate feminism on The Bold Type and then collective feminism on Charmed's reboot and an everyday feminism on Sex Education. Analyzing this television cycle, we argue that while imperfect, these pilots' iterations of popular feminism represent a transformation from postfeminist entertainment toward politically engaged feminism. Literary and artistic archives are frequently dispersed across heritage institutions, posing a challenge to researchers and archivists whose work is all the more complex given the challenges of identifying the location of archival collections. Knowing where an archives is located is fundamental to research, and for archivists it is useful to know what repositories have related collections in order to redirect potential acquisitions or to develop cross-institutional collaborations. The International Council on Archives (ICA) Section on Archives of Literature and Art (SLA) developed the World-Wide Directory of Repositories holding Archives of Literature and Art as a means for connecting archivists and linking researchers with collections. In this article, we provide a history of the directory, detail the process of incorporating Wikidata maps into the directory, and consider questions around the directory's purpose, development, maintenance, and future directions. Background: Clinical pharmacy services are known to improve patient outcomes. Pharmacists contribute to patient care in the acute care setting in multiple ways, including providing advice and information to patients and the health care team, performing medication histories to prevent waste and support medication adherence, analyzing the cost-effectiveness of medications, and ensuring patient safety through patient monitoring and medication review. Specific clinical pharmacist services include managing intravenous to oral medication adjustments, renal dose adjustments, and performing pharmacokinetic dosing of medications, among others. Many of these clinical services are performed daily but are not evaluated for clinical quality or compliance with policies. Evaluating these clinical services may provide a multitude of benefits to pharmacy departments, health systems, and patients. Methods: The purpose of this study was to evaluate pharmacist use and percent compliance of a renal dose adjustment policy upon initial order verification and discharge. This was completed through retrospective chart review to determine if dose adjustments were made appropriately and descriptive statistics were used to establish pharmacist compliance. Those orders that were inappropriately adjusted were analyzed for trends that could lead to possible policy improvements or pharmacist education opportunities. The completed evaluation also led to the development of an evaluation system that can be utilized to routinely assess clinical pharmacist services. Conclusions: The results of this study are being used to develop and support future clinical service evaluations, inspire process improvements, and improve patient outcomes and pharmacist accountability. Objective: This study was to determine if calcium fortification yields a higher price per serving in grocery store products. Researchers compared store brand to national brand grocery products in relation to cost in order to examine if calcium values were similar between store brand and national brand products.Methods: A total of 112 store brand and 211 national brand grocery products were collected from three low (national chain store), middle and high priced (Virginia and North Carolina regional store) grocery venues. Products were compared using price and calcium percentage per serving. ANOVA was used to determine between store brand and national brand for price per serving and calcium content, and between grocery venues.Results: National brand fortified products had a significantly lower mean price per serving when compared to national brand non-fortified products (p = 0.0002). There was no statistical difference between store brand fortified and non-fortified products (p = 0.9256). Low priced store brand products had the lowest mean price per serving ($0.34 ±0.24).Conclusions: This study found store brand products have similar calcium content as national brand products. Product cost was lower at low priced store compared to middle and high priced stores. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
