Abstract

This paper proposes a novel approach to generate samples from target distributions that are difficult to sample from using Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) methods. Traditional MCMC algorithms often face slow convergence due to the difficulty in finding proposals that suit the problem at hand. To address this issue, the paper introduces the Approximate Posterior Ensemble Sampler (APES) algorithm, which employs kernel density estimation and radial basis interpolation to create an adaptive proposal, leading to fast convergence of the chains. The APES algorithm's scalability to higher dimensions makes it a practical solution for complex problems. The proposed method generates an approximate posterior probability that closely approximates the desired distribution and is easy to sample from, resulting in smaller autocorrelation times and a higher probability of acceptance by the chain. We compare the performance of the APES algorithm with the affine invariance ensemble sampler with the stretch move in various contexts, demonstrating the efficiency of the proposed method. For instance, on the Rosenbrock function, the APES presented an autocorrelation time 140 times smaller than the affine invariance ensemble sampler. The comparison showcases the effectiveness of the APES algorithm in generating samples from challenging distributions. This paper presents a practical solution to generating samples from complex distributions while addressing the challenge of finding suitable proposals. With new cosmological surveys set to deal with many new systematics, this method offers a practical solution for the upcoming era of cosmological analyses. 29. Alan Kurdi: Análise de uma fotografia de imprensa

Abstract

The article aims to discuss aesthetic, ethical, ontological and semiotic aspects of photojournalism, whose object is the image of the boy Alan Kurdi, who died in Turkey. Methodologically, the survey of articles published by newspapers the day after the fact analyzes the problem of the press responsibility in portraying horror. Evidence is sought for the hypotheses of image trivialization, departure from reality and fragmentation of meaning for the reader. Results show the power of photojournalism in creating and legitimizing collective imagination. Analysis allows to conclude that, when publishing a definitive portrait of history, newspapers emphasize the awareness of social responsibility., O artigo objetiva discutir aspectos estéticos, éticos, ontológicos e semióticos do fotojornalismo, cujo objeto é a imagem do menino Alan Kurdi, morto na Turquia. Metodologicamente, o levantamento das matérias publicadas pelos jornais no dia seguinte ao fato analisa o problema da responsabilidade da imprensa na retratação do horror. Buscam-se evidências para as hipóteses da banalização da imagem, afastamento da realidade e fragmentação do sentido para o leitor. Os resultados mostram o poder do fotojornalismo na criação e legitimação do imaginário coletivo. As análises permitem concluir que, publicando um retrato definitivo da história, os jornais ressaltam a consciência da responsabilidade social.

Abstract

Domino Liver transplant (DLT) is a strategy to address organ shortage and expand the liver donor pool for liver transplantation. Despite offering some unique technical challenges, DLT appears to be a safe and reasonable option to be considered for selected patients who would otherwise not benefit from liver transplantation. However, the benefit of expanding the donor pool must be balanced against the risk of disease transmission.In this review, we present where the DLT currently stands worldwide and our own experience with this procedure. publishersversion published

Abstract

The liver-first approach in patients with synchronous colorectal liver metastases (CRLM) has gained wide consensus but its role is still to be clarified. We aimed to elucidate the outcome of the liver-first approach and to identify patients who benefit at most from this approach. Patients with synchronous CRLM included in the LiverMetSurvey registry between 2000 and 2017 were considered. Three strategies were analyzed, i.e. liver-first approach, colorectal resection followed by liver resection (primary-first), and simultaneous resection, and three groups of patients were analyzed, i.e. solitary metastasis, multiple unilobar CRLM, and multiple bilobar CRLM. In each group, patients from the three strategy groups were matched by propensity score analysis. Overall, 7360 patients were analyzed: 4415 primary-first, 552 liver-first, and 2393 simultaneous resections. Compared with the other groups, the liver-first group had more rectal tumors (58.0% vs. 31.2%) and higher hepatic tumor burden (more than three CRLMs: 34.8% vs. 24.0%; size > 50 mm: 35.6% vs. 22.8%; p < 0.001). In patients with solitary and multiple unilobar CRLM, survival was similar regardless of treatment strategy, whereas in patients with multiple bilobar metastases, the liver-first approach was an independent positive prognostic factor, both in unmatched patients (3-year survival 65.9% vs. primary-first 60.4%: hazard ratio [HR] 1.321, p = 0.031; vs. simultaneous resections 54.4%: HR 1.624, p < 0.001) and after propensity score matching (vs. primary-first: HR 1.667, p = 0.017; vs. simultaneous resections: HR 2.278, p = 0.003). In patients with synchronous CRLM, the surgical strategy should be decided according to the hepatic tumor burden. In the presence of multiple bilobar CRLM, the liver-first approach is associated with longer survival than the alternative approaches and should be evaluated as standard.

Abstract

This article addresses the power of images in three periods of 20th century history. The use of images, particularly of photography, during these periods became omnipresent, although there are many other examples of the power of images over the relevance of words: the sight of Phryne’s partially naked body, for instance, had a big impact in her trial in the 4th century. Two of the examples presented in this paper (Nazism and Stalinism) used images as an instrument of power. They aimed to present simultaneously a sense of heroism and of “normalization” in radical contrast to the brutality that left a decisive mark in history as one of the most tragic dark moments of the 20th century. On the other hand, under Stalin, photos and images were manipulated: erasing people in photos can be understood as a macabre allegory of their annihilation in real life. The efficacy in the re-construction of reality through the manipulation of photos seems to result from an illusional omnipotence, as if dictators had the power to enunciate, create and destroy “reality”. The third part of this article discusses the answer open and given by painting to the increasing erosion of images witnessed nowadays. Painting, contrary to the ephemeral nature of photography, survive dark times. It resists in a stubborn way, as we can see, for instance in the example of Tuymans’ paintings. You cannot erase its memory. Painting is not “programmatic”. It is an attempt to depollute images. And by doing this, it tears open a space for the search for meaning. Este artigo procura abordar o poder da presença da imagem em três períodos históricos do século XX, algo que se tornou omnipresente nestas épocas históricas, mas que não é exclusivo das mesmas: veja-se a referência ao impacto da visão de parte do corpo descoberto de Frine, levada a julgamento no século IV a.C. A imagem, em dois dos casos aqui apresentados (o nazismo e o estalinismo), constituiu um instrumento ao serviço do poder, com o objetivo de encenar simultaneamente a “heroicidade” e uma normalidade em contraste radical com uma brutalidade que marcou decisivamente a história e constituiu um dos principais momentos de trevas vividos no século XX. Por seu turno, sob Estaline, a imagem é manipulada, tornando o processo de rasura de personagens uma alegoria macabra da sua aniquilação real. A eficácia da reconstrução da realidade, através da manipulação da imagem, passa, assim, por uma ilusão de omnipotência: como se os ditadores tivessem o poder de enunciar, construir e destruir a “realidade”. Na terceira parte, partindo da questão da acentuada erosão das imagens na atualidade, a discussão centra-se na resposta que a pintura abre e problematiza. Ao contrário do carácter efémero da fotografia, a pintura sobrevive a tempos sombrios, persiste teimosamente, como se pode ver no caso de Tuymans. A memória não pode ser apagada. E porque não é programática, porque constitui uma tentativa de despoluição da imagem, rasga o espaço para a busca de sentido.
