Abstract

Requirements elicitation is not an easy task. Different expectations between users and analysts, redundancy of information and lack of standardization can make this task difficult and conflicting. When it comes to software for the public sector this task becomes somewhat more complicated because of the constant changes in federal laws and regulations. This paper presents a case study of applying work instructions to remedy these kind of problems, as well as others found in the company where the study was carried out. We achieved very promising results, namely better utilization of human resources and reduction of job demand.

6. Internal ring waves in a three-layer fluid over a linear shear current

Abstract

Oceanic internal waves often have curvilinear fronts and propagate over various currents. We present the first study of long weakly-nonlinear internal ring waves in a three-layer fluid in the presence of a background linear shear current. The leading order of this theory leads to the angular adjustment equation - a nonlinear first-order differential equation describing the dependence of the linear long wave speed on the angle to the direction of the current. Ring waves correspond to singular solution (envelope of the general solution) of this equation, and they can exist only under certain conditions. The constructed solutions reveal qualitative differences in the shapes of the wavefronts of the two baroclinic modes: the wavefront of the faster mode is elongated in the direction of the current, while the wavefront of the slower mode is squeezed. Moreover, different regimes are identified according to the vorticity strength. When the vorticity is weak, part of the wavefront is able to propagate upstream. However, when the vorticity is strong enough, the whole wavefront propagates downstream. A richer behaviour can be observed for the slower mode. As the vorticity increases, singularities of the swallowtail-type may arise and, eventually, solutions with compact wavefronts crossing the downstream axis cease to exist. We show that the latter is related to the long-wave instability of the base flow. We obtain analytical expressions for the coefficients of the cKdV-type amplitude equation, and numerically model the evolution of the waves for both modes. The initial evolution is in agreement with the leading-order predictions for the deformations of the wavefronts. Then, as the wavefronts expand, strong dispersive effects in the upstream direction are revealed. Abstract

We investigate interesting symmetry properties verified by the down-converted beams produced in optical parametric amplification with structured light. We show that the Poincar\'e sphere symmetry, previously demonstrated for first-order spatial modes, translates to a multiple Poincar\'e sphere structure for higher orders. Each one of these multiple spheres is associated with a two-dimensional subspace defined by a different value of the orbital angular momentum. Therefore, the symmetry verified by first order modes is reproduced independently in each subspace. This effect can be useful for parallel control of independently correlated beams.

Abstract

An improvement modification of the Spectral Approach (SA) used for approximating the nonclassical neutral particle transport equation is described in this work. The main focus of the modified SA lies on a slight modification of the nonclassical angular flux representation as a function of truncated Laguerre series. This leads, in some cases, to a considerable decrease of the Laguerre truncation order required to generate accurate solutions. Abstract

Quantum optical cluster states have been increasingly explored, in the light of their importance for measurement-based quantum computing. Here we set forth a new method for generating quantum controlled cluster states: pumping an optical parametric oscillator with spatially structured light. We show that state-of-the-art techniques for producing clusters in the spectral and temporal domains are improved by a structured light pump, which manipulates the spatial mode couplings in the parametric interaction. We illustrate the method considering a second-order pump structure, and show that a simple mode rotation yields different cluster states, including, but not limited to the two-dimensional square and hexagonal lattices. We also introduce a novel technique for generating non-uniform cluster states, and propose a simple setup for its implementation., Comment: 9 pages, 7 figures

Abstract

We investigate the transverse mode effects on the frequency combs generated by a type-I optical parametric oscillator (OPO) below threshold. We take the diffraction effects fully into account, considering usual OPO architectures instead of the self-imaging design. Further, we show that an OPO pumped with structured light produces multiple frequency combs simultaneously, corresponding to different combinations of spatial modes in the downconverted fields. Abstract

We investigate the dynamical properties of a type-II optical parametric oscillator pumped by a structured light beam carrying orbital angular momentum. Different dynamical regimes are theoretically derived and experimentally demonstrated, depending on the anisotropy effects imposed by the nonlinear medium. In a weakly anisotropic regime, fine-tuning of the orbital angular momentum transfer is obtained by adjusting the crystal parameters. Under strong anisotropy, orbital angular momentum transfer is not possible and a sharp dynamical behavior is observed, with abrupt switching between different transverse modes., Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures

Abstract

This paper introduces a mathematical approach that allows one to numerically solve the nonclassical transport equation in a deterministic fashion using classical numerical procedures. The nonclassical transport equation describes particle transport for random statistically homogeneous systems in which the distribution function for free-paths between scattering centers is nonexponential. We use a spectral method to represent the nonclassical flux as a series of Laguerre polynomials in the free-path variable $s$, resulting in a nonclassical equation that has the form of a classical transport equation. 27. Tissue-specific butyrophilin-like molecules are master regulators of intraepithelial γδ T cell composition

Abstract

Many epithelial barriers are constitutively populated by large numbers of organ-specific γδ T cells that collectively make up a substantial proportion of the body's T cells. In mice, these intraepithelial lymphocytes (IEL) display striking site-specific T cell receptor (TCR) Variable (V)γ chain usage, such that Vγ5+, Vγ6+ and Vγ7+ T cells form lifelong associations with the murine epidermis, uterine and the small intestinal epithelium, respectively. The maintenance of IEL composition is critically important to host physiology and its disruption in murine epidermis is associated with dysregulated cutaneous inflammation and heightened susceptibility to carcinogenesis. Furthermore, tumour-associated γδ T cell gene-expression signatures were recently found to be the greatest correlate with overall survival in a genome-wide expression analysis of ~18,000 human tumours. Thus, there is considerable interest in identifying molecules that regulate infiltration, composition and activation of tissue-resident γδ T cells. Skint1 is a Butyrophilin-like (Btnl) gene expressed by thymic medullary epithelium and suprabasal keratinocytes, which shapes DETC composition. However, as neither Skint1 nor DETC are conserved, a general mechanism by which epithelia shape IEL composition remains unelucidated. Here we show that enterocyte Btnl1 expression shapes small intestinal IEL composition by driving extrathymic maturation and expansion of Vγ7+ IEL in trans upon their arrival in the gut. Uninfluenced by microbial or solid food antigens, this mechanism evokes the Major Histocompatibility Complex-driven selection of αβ T cell repertoires. Consistent with this, we show that Btnl1 together with Btnl6 elicits specific TCR-dependent responses of intestinal Vγ7+ cells in vitro. From these data, a generalizable mechanism emerges whereby organ-specific expression of Btnl molecules enables epithelial cells to actively shape the lifelong composition of their signature IEL compartments. Moreover, by identifying selection elements that regulate signature γδ IEL, our models also provide novel avenues to study the unique contributions of discreet IEL compartments to host immunity.

Abstract

When solving nonlinear algebraic equations that arise from discretization using the finite element method (FEM), it is often observed that the standard Newton-Raphson (N-R) iteration either fails to converge or necessitates a large number of iterations in the vicinity of critical points. This work proposes an additional numerical strategy, known as the Potra-Pták iterative cycle, to improve the efficiency of solving highly nonlinear structural problems. Therefore, the focus here is on making the nonlinear solver more robust and efficient, allowing the analysis of more complex nonlinear structures. In the Potra-Pták iterative cycle, two corrections of the objective function (energy function) are performed. The introduction of a second correction in the iterative cycle makes the Potra-Pták strategy more efficient than the standard or modified N-R iterations. This numerical strategy was implemented in the homemade Computational System for Advanced Structural Analysis (CS-ASA) program. The program is based on the FEM and is capable of performing static and dynamic nonlinear analysis of steel, concrete, and composite structures, and its efficiency is then verified through the analysis of slender frames and arches. Abstract

Individuals with minor ischaemic stroke and intracranial occlusion are at increased risk of poor outcomes. Intravenous thrombolysis with tenecteplase might improve outcomes in this population. We aimed to test the superiority of intravenous tenecteplase over non-thrombolytic standard of care in patients with minor ischaemic stroke and intracranial occlusion or focal perfusion abnormality.
