Abstract

We present an experimental determination of the $4 \: S_{1/2} \rightarrow 6\: S_{1/2}$ transition frequency in atomic potassium, $^{39}$K, using direct frequency comb spectroscopy. The output of a stabilized optical frequency comb was used to excite a thermal atomic vapor. The repetition rate of the frequency comb was scanned and the transitions were excited using step-wise two-photon excitation. The center of gravity frequency for the transition was found to be $\nu_\textrm{cog} = 822\, 951\, 698.09(13)$ MHz and the measured hyperfine $A$ coefficient of the $6\: S_{1/2}$ state was $21.93(11)$ MHz. The measurements are in agreement with previous values and represent an improvement by a factor of 700 in the uncertainty of the center of gravity measurement., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures

Abstract

Experimental searches for the electron electric dipole moment (EDM) probe new physics beyond the Standard Model. The current best EDM limit was set by the ACME Collaboration [Science \textbf{343}, 269 (2014)], constraining time reversal symmetry ($T$) violating physics at the TeV energy scale. ACME used optical pumping to prepare a coherent superposition of ThO $H^3\Delta_1$ states that have aligned electron spins. Spin precession due to the molecule's internal electric field was measured to extract the EDM. We report here on an improved method for preparing this spin-aligned state of the electron by using STIRAP. We demonstrate a transfer efficiency of $75\pm5\%$, representing a significant gain in signal for a next generation EDM experiment. We discuss the particularities of implementing STIRAP in systems such as ours, where molecular ensembles with large phase-space distributions are transfered via weak molecular transitions with limited laser power and limited optical access.

Abstract

We recently set a new limit on the electric dipole moment of the electron (eEDM) (J Baron et al and ACME collaboration 2014 Science 343 269-272), which represented an order-of-magnitude improvement on the previous limit and placed more stringent constraints on many charge-parity-violating extensions to the standard model. In this paper we discuss the measurement in detail. The experimental method and associated apparatus are described, together with the techniques used to isolate the eEDM signal. In particular, we detail the way experimental switches were used to suppress effects that can mimic the signal of interest. The methods used to search for systematic errors, and models explaining observed systematic errors, are also described. We briefly discuss possible improvements to the experiment.

27. An evaluation of a mobile telehealth intervention for people with insulin-requiring diabetes

Abstract

This thesis describes the evaluation of a mobile telehealth intervention for people with diabetes. In line with the gaps in the literature identified in a systematic review of mobile telehealth interventions in diabetes, the aims of this thesis were to test the effectiveness of a mobile telehealth intervention, to examine the mechanisms of action of the intervention, to identify predictors of benefit and of telehealth usage, to explore patients’ perspectives on telehealth and to assess intervention fidelity. A randomized controlled trial comparing standard care to standard care supplemented with mobile telehealth was conducted and included 81 participants with insulin-requiring and poorly controlled diabetes. Participants completed assessments at baseline, 3 months and 9 months. Outcomes included glycaemic control (HbA1c), self-management behaviours, quality of life and health care utilization. Efficacy beliefs and personal models of diabetes were assessed as process variables. In addition, mobile telehealth participants completed assessments of acceptability of telehealth, perceived adequacy of training and self-efficacy to use telehealth. Semi-structured interviews conducted with intervention group participants having completed the study explored patients’ perceptions and experiences using mobile telehealth. Results indicated the intervention had no effect on study outcomes. Efficacy beliefs in the intervention group were found to improve significantly compared to the control group and there was some evidence in mediation analyses to suggest these changes mediated improvements in study outcomes. Some evidence also suggested that improvements in efficacy beliefs were predicted by clinical variables. In terms of patients’ usage of telehealth, weekly frequency of self-monitoring of blood glucose and dietary behaviours at baseline were the strongest predictors, but results also suggested that acceptability, self-efficacy to use telehealth, perceived adequacy of training, and the number of contacts with telehealth providers were related to telehealth usage. The qualitative interviews highlighted features of the mobile telehealth equipment that were particularly popular. They also provided valuable information on the perceived effects of mobile telehealth and on key areas of improvement for the successful implementation of telehealth in routine practice. Data collected on the delivery of the intervention suggested it was unlikely to have been delivered faithfully.

Extensions to the Standard Model, such as weak-scale supersymmetry, posit the existence of new particles and interactions that are asymmetric under time reversal (T) and nearly always predict a small yet potentially measurable electron electric dipole moment (EDM), d(e), in the range of 10(-27) to 10(-30) e·cm. The EDM is an asymmetric charge distribution along the electron spin (S(→)) that is also asymmetric under T. Using the polar molecule thorium monoxide, we measured d(e) = (-2.1 ± 3.7stat ± 2.5syst) × 10(-29) e·cm. This corresponds to an upper limit of |d(e)| < 8.7 × 10(-29) e·cm with 90% confidence, an order of magnitude improvement in sensitivity relative to the previous best limit. Our result constrains T-violating physics at the TeV energy scale.

Abstract

The environmental role of coastal wetlands has been extensively acknowledged, as well as the threats that climate change induced sea-level rise and anthropogenic pressures are exerting on their survival. However, it has been shown that biological and sediment accretion can ease the effects of sea-level rise. This study presents the ecogeomorphological model of a mangrove wetland in the Republic of Fiji. The study site selected was the mangrove wetland at the mouth of the Dreketi River (northern coast of Vanua Levu - Republic of Fiji) due to its environmental relevance as part of a Ramsar site. The research involved the quantification of the sediment from the upstream catchment and the ecogeomorphological evolution of the mangrove wetland. The hydro-sedimentological contribution of the Dreketi River catchment was identified using a hydro-sedimentological, physically based watershed scale model. The results showed a good performance against sediment concentrations obtained using remote sensing products. The evolution of the mangrove wetland was simulated using an ecogeomorphological model (EGM). The model captured the present spatial distribution of suitable areas for mangrove wetlands. After 100 years of simulation under sea-level rise, a considerable reduction of the area suitable for mangroves was observed. The model demonstrated the impact of sea-level rise and sediment accretion on the wetland's evolution in the future, emphasising the significance of sediment input from the contributing catchment.
