One of the most promising means of learning how initial impact conditions are related to the processes leading to the formation of a planetary-scale crater is through scaling relationships.1,2,3 The first phase of deriving such relationships has led to great insight into the cratering process and has yielded predictive capabilities that are mathematically rigorous and internally consistent. Such derivations typically have treated targets as continuous media; in many, cases, however, planetary materials represent irregular and discontinuous targets, the effects of which on the scaling relationships are still poorly understood.4,5 We continue to examine the effects of varying impact conditions on the excavation and final dimensions of craters formed in sand. Along with the more commonly treated variables such as impact speed, projectile size and material, and impact angle,6 such experiments also permit the study of changing granularity and friction angle of the target materials. This contribution presents some of the data collected during and after the impact of glass spheres into a medium-grained sand.

This viewgraph document reviews the topography of the Itokawa asteroid. It summarizes some of the relevant information about the asteroid, and how using the imaging from Hayabusa and LIDAR data, a topographic image of Itokawa was derived.

Several experimental studies [1,2,3] indicate that differences in the grain size of the target relative to the projectile could influence the cratering process. Impacts into coarse sand grains of size comparable to the projectile show some discrepancies with existing relationships for crater growth [e.g. 4]. Similarly, targets of ne grained, uniform in diameter glass spheres show differences in crater depth, transient crater diameter, and volume of ejecta excavated as a function of grain size [2,3]. The purpose of this work is to continue investigating how the relative grain size may influence early time coupling between a projectile and target, with implications for subsequent ejecta excavation and crater growth. In previous efforts we used numerical techniques to focus on the propagation of shock waves in coarse, granular media emphasizing the influence of relative grain size on crater growth, ejecta production, cratering efficiency, target strength, and crater shape [5,6,7]. In this study, we use experimental techniques - in part as a reality check for the numerical studies - to report on how coarse grained targets might influence ejecta excavation and crater shape. This body of work possesses important implications for ejecta excavation and cratering efficiency on asteroids that may possess rubble pile-like structures, and on planets that may possess either pre-fractured surfaces or large-scale heterogeneities in shock impedance.

We broadly characterize the rheology of fluidized ejecta on Mars as it flows during its final stages of emplacement by using the concept of run-out efficiency. Run-out efficiency for ejecta can be obtained through an energy balance between the kinetic energy of the excavated ejecta, and the total work lost during its deposition. Such an efficiency is directly comparable to run-out efficiency (i.e., L/H analyzes where L is the run-out distance and H is onset height) of terrestrial and extraterrestrial mass movements. Determination of the L/H ratio is commonly used in terrestrial geology to broadly determine the type and rheology of mass movements

Analyses of impact craters formed in laboratory experiments historically have been the source of many fundamental observations and interpretations of the impact-cratering process itself. Due to its ready availability, ease of handling, and lack of strength, dry sand of various types has been the target material of choice in the majority of such experiments. A consequence of its lack of intrinsic strength, however, is dry sand's inability to maintain slopes above its angle of repose. Evidence from field observations of simple terrestrial craters and laboratory craters formed in more cohesive granular media suggests that transient cavities are similar to paraboloids in shape. Cross-sections of craters formed in dry sand, however, are nearly conical with the wall slopes at or near the angle of repose, indicating that the original crater form has been modified by one or more processes, among which is simple slope failure. Because the dimensions and shape of the transient cavity reflect the detailed conditions of a given impact event, its characterization has long been a desired goal in experimentation. A means of estimating the position of the transient cavity's rim is suggested below, relying on determination of velocities of material ejected from the growing cavity.

The propagation of shock waves through target materials is strongly influenced by the presence of small-scale structure, fractures, physical and chemical heterogeneities. Pre-existing fractures often create craters that appear square in outline (e.g. Meteor Crater). Reverberations behind the shock from the presence of physical heterogeneity have been proposed as a mechanism for transient weakening of target materials. Pre-existing fractures can also affect melt generation. In this study, we are attempting to bridge the gap in numerical modeling between the micro-scale and the continuum, the so-called meso-scale. To accomplish this, we are developing a methodology to be used in the shock physics hydrocode (CTH) using Monte-Carlo-type methods to investigate the shock properties of heterogeneous materials. By comparing the results of numerical experiments at the micro-scale with experimental results and by using statistical techniques to evaluate the performance of simple constitutive models, we hope to embed the effect of physical heterogeneity into the field variables (pressure, stress, density, velocity) allowing us to directly imprint the effects of micro-scale heterogeneity at the continuum level without incurring high computational cost.

The shapes of large-scale craters and the mechanics responsible for melt generation are influenced by broad and small-scale structures present in a target prior to impact. For example, well-developed systems of fractures often create craters that appear square in outline, good examples being Meteor Crater, AZ and the square craters of 433 Eros. Pre-broken target material also affects melt generation. Kieffer has shown how the shock wave generated in Coconino sandstone at Meteor crater created reverberations which, in combination with the natural target heterogeneity present, created peaks and troughs in pressure and compressed density as individual grains collided to produce a range of shock mineralogies and melts within neighboring samples. In this study, we further explore how pre-existing target structure influences various aspects of the cratering process. We combine experimental and numerical techniques to explore the connection between the scales of the impact generated shock wave and the pre-existing target structure. We focus on the propagation of shock waves in coarse, granular media, emphasizing its consequences on excavation, crater growth, ejecta production, cratering efficiency, melt generation, and crater shape. As a baseline, we present a first series of results for idealized targets where the particles are all identical in size and possess the same shock impedance. We will also present a few results, whereby we increase the complexities of the target properties by varying the grain size, strength, impedance and frictional properties. In addition, we investigate the origin and implications of reverberations that are created by the presence of physical and chemical heterogeneity in a target.

We report preliminary observations obtained from the NEAR Laser Rangefinder (NLR) and NEAR Multispectral Imager (MSI) for approx. 300 craters seen on 433 Eros to address Eros crater formation and degradation processes. Additional information is contained in the original extended abstract.
