Cataclysmic variables (CVS) are compact binary systems with white dwarves (WDs) as a primary.They constitute laboratories to study accretion flows, gas dynamics, outflows, transient outbursts,and explosive nuclear burning under different astrophysical plasma conditions in relation to other compact object binaries and active galactic nuclei. I will discuss spectral-timing analysis of these systems to study accretion physicsin nonmagnetic CVs. CVs demonstrate band limited noise (BLN) in the UV, X-ray and optical, withdetected frequency breaks (mainly dwarf novae) in the range (1-6) mHz in quiescence and indicate an optically thickdisk truncation (transition) showing existence of advective hot flows (RIAF ADAF-like flows) in the inner regions(Balman & Revnivtsev 2012, Balman 2019, Balman 2020). High state CVs have accretion rates 10^−9 - few x10^−8 Msun/yrwith wind outflows. I find similar broadband noise to DNe with BLN noise breaking in a range 2.5-10 mHz and prominentLorentzian noise components dominating the BLN with occasional mHz QPOs as the accretion rate increases withspectral characteristics revealing nonequilibrium ionization plasma and ouflows detected in the X-rays (Balman et al. 2022). A power law component also exits that becomes more prominent with increasing accretion rate. I will discuss how spectral-timing studies can be probes todetermine accretion history and state changes in WD binaries. I will elaborate with simulations how Athena can resolve some of the important complexities we are facing and improve our undertanding of advective hotflows in these systems.

I discuss how the advective hot accretion flows (ADAF-like) in the inner regions of accretion disks (merged with boundary layer zones) in nonmagnetic CVs explain most of the discrepancies and complexities that have been encountered in the X-ray observations. I stress how flickering variability studies from optical to X-rays can be probes to determine accretion history and disk structure together with how the temporal and spectral variability of CVs are related to that of LMXBs and AGNs. Finally, I discuss the nature of accretion in nonmagnetic WDs in terms of ADAF-like accretion flows, and elaborate on the solu-tions it brings and its complications, constructing an observational framework to motivate new theoretical calculations that introduce this flow-type in disks, outflow and wind models together with disk-instability models of outbursts and nova outbursts in AWBs and WD physics, in general. Bu çalışmada NGC 4258 (M106) sarmal galaksisinde belirlenmiş Aşırı-Parlak X-ışın Kaynağı X-6’nın (Ultraluminous X-ray Source, ULX X-6) tayfsal ve zamansal özellikleri incelenmiştir. Bu amaçla XMM-Newton, Chandra ve Swift’in yaklaşık 14 yılı kapsayan arşiv verileri analiz edilmiştir. Sertlik oranı ve tayfsal model parametreleri dikkate alındığında, X-6’nın gözlemler boyunca olası tayfsal değişimler sergilediği belirlenmiştir. Ayrıca disk model parametreleri ve Eddington limiti kullanılarak, sistemdeki yığılma yapan cismin yıldız-kütleli bir karadelik olabileceği tartışılmıştır.

Bu çalışmada NGC 4258, NGC 5474 ve M66 (NGC 3627) yakın galaksilerinde bulunan Aşırı- Parlak X-ışın Kaynaklarının (Ultraluminous X-ray Source, ULX) ilk kez optik bölgede karşılıkları belirlenmiştir. Analizler için Hubble Uzay Teleskobunun arşiv verileri ile TUG RTT-150 cm ve SAO BTA-6m (Rusya) teleskopları ile alınan tayf verileri kullanılmıştır. Belirlenen adayların optik bölgede tayfsal sınıflandırılmaları yapılmış, parlaklık ve olası kütle-yaş değerleri hesaplanmıştır. Ayrıca, hesaplanan X-ışın-optik akı oranları bilinen birçok ULX’e benzer şekilde oldukça yüksek bulunmuştur. Elde edilen sonuçlar değerlendirilerek ULX’lerin optik ışımaları- nın kaynağı tartışılmıştır.

Bu çalışmada NGC 4258 sarmal galaksisinde {\itshape Chandra} uydusu tarafından belirlenmiş Aşırı-parlak X-ışın kaynağı (AXK) X-6'nın, X-ışın ve optik bölgedeki arşiv verileri kullanılarak olası doğası tartışılmaktadır. {\itshape Chandra} ve {\itshape XMM-Newton} X-ışın uydularının gözlem verileri ile kaynağın tayfsal ve zamansal özellikleri araştırılmıştır. Optik bölgede, TUG'da (TÜBİTAK Ulusal Gözlemevi) bulunan RTT-150 teleskobu ile alınan tayfı ve kaynağa ait {\itshape Hubble Uzay Teleskobu (HST)} verileri incelenecektir. Bu sunumda araştırmalarımızın ilk sonuçları sunulmaktadır.

We present for the first time orbital phase-resolved spectra of an intermediate polar (IP), EX Hya, together with the spin phase-resolved spectra during two different epochs using the X-ray Multi-Mirror Mission, European Photon Imaging Camera (pn instrument). We find that the source at the two epochs has the same X-ray luminosity of $\sim$ 6.5 $\times$ 10$^{31}$ erg s$^{-1}$. We detect spectral variations between the 2000 and 2003 observations of the source. We fitted the spectrum using a neutral hydrogen absorption model with or without covering fraction together with Gaussians for emission lines, two collisional equilibrium plasma emission models (MEKAL) and a cooling-flow plasma emission model (VMCFLOW). We find that two of the three emission components ($kT$=0.6-0.8 keV and $kT$=1.3-1.7 keV) fitted by the MEKAL models are almost constant over the spin and orbital phases and also over the two different epochs with the normalisation varying directly proportional to the flux when the data are folded according to the orbital and spin phase indicating that the slight variation may be due to occultation. The emission modeled by the VMCFLOW changes over the spin and orbital phases and the 2000 and 2003 observations reveal two different ranges of temperatures (3-33 and 8-61 keV respectively) that model the shock zone in the accretion column/s. The ratios of the spin maximum to minimum and the orbital maximum to minimum spectra along with the increase in the plasma temperatures indicate that the spectrum gets harder in the minimum phases of both orbital and spin periods. In the 2003 observation, a 6.4 keV fluorescent Fe emission line is present at the orbital minima in a range of phases from 0.9 to 1.3 and it is absent otherwise. This indicates that there is reflection from the disc most likely from a large bulge at the accretion impact zone., Comment: 25 pages, 12 figures and 6 tables; accepted to MNRAS as it stands

We present the ROSAT High Resolution Imager (HRI) data of the first resolved and detected classical nova shell in the X-ray wavelengths : The shell of Nova Persei (1901). We find that the shell is composed of knots and has an elliptical shape. The surface brightness is about 703.4+/-54.5 counts arcmin(-2). We estimate that the spectrum is of thermal origin with a luminosity of 8.0x10(31) erg s(-1) and an X-ray temperature of similar to 2.0x10(6) K in the 0.1-2.4 keV energy range. The knots are most likely a result of fragmentation and condensation in the post-shock region. This detection sheds some light into one of the most poorly understood stages of classical nova evolution. (C) 2000 COSPAR. Published by Elsevier Science Ltd.

Ultraluminous X-ray Sources (ULXs) are extragalactic off-nuclear point-like sources with luminosities exceeding the Eddington limit for a stellar mass black hole (LX > 1039 erg s-1). Altough it is known that ULX, which is determined from Chandra and/or XMM-Newton X-ray telescope observations is a binary star system, its component stars and their emission mechanism are not yet well understood. Studying the optical counterparts of ULXs are important to understand emission mechanisms. In this thesis, the optical counterparts of ULXs in the nearby (d < 10 Mpc) NGC 5474, NGC 3627, NGC 4258 and interacting NGC 4490/4485 galaxies were detected for the first time and studied in detail. Hubble Space Telescope (HST) archival data, SAO BTA-6 m and TUG RTT-150cm telescopes were used for photometric and spectroscopic analyses. The mass, age and spectral type of the secondary stars were calculated by using the HST mutli-band magnitutes of the possible optical counterparts. Gözlemsel tekniklerdeki gelişmelere rağmen amanyetik kataklismik değişkenlerdeX-ışınlarının gözlemsel çeşitliliğinin sebepleri halen anlaşılmamaktadır. Yapaca-ğımız tez çalışmasında bu tür sistemlerin X-ışını spektral özelliklerini ele alarakdurgun, yüksek fazlarında ve disk patlamalarında karşılartırmalar ile karakte-rizasyon yapacağız. Bununla beraber, çok-sıcaklıklı plasma emisyon modellerinive yüksek fazlarda ve patlama evrelerinde beklenen kara cisim ışıma bileşke-lerini çalışacağız. Bu doğrultuda bir takım yayınlanmış amanyetik kataklismikdeğişken verilerini XMM-Newton ve SWIFT arişlerinden tesbit ettik. Spektralve temporal analiz teknikleri kullanarak cüce novaların, yüksek faz sistemlerininve bu tür sistemlerdeki madde aktarım akışlarının ve geometrisinin anlayışınıgeliştirmeyi planlamaktayız. Despite of recent developments in observational techniques, the diversity of theX-ray observations of nonmagnetic Cataclysmic Variables (CVs) are still not en-tirely understood. In this work, we plan to review the X-ray spectral character-istics of such systems during their quiescence state which in general explainedby the multi-temperature plasma emission models and also, the CV spectrathat show dominantly hard X-ray emission with few sources that reveal softX-ray/EUV blackbody emission. For this purpose, we have selected several un-published nonmagnetic CV data of three sources SS Aur, EY Cyg and TW Pictaken and archived by XMM-Newton and SWIFT Observatories. Using variousdata analysis techniques, we will accomplish spectral and temporal analysis fora better understanding of dwarf nova phenomenon and the nature of accretionflow and geometry in these systems. 90

ULX’lerin, sıkı (compact) cismi karadelik ya da nötron yıldızı olan ve kütle aktarımı yapan X-ışın çiftleri oldukları önerilmektedir. Bu tez kapsamında seçilen iki yakın (d < 10 Mpc) galaksi NGC 4736 ve NGC 4258’de belirlenen iki ULX’in ayrıntılı tayfsal ve zamansal özellikleri incelendi. Analiz için Chandra, XMM-Newton ve Swift X-ışın uydularının verileri kullanıldı. NGC 4736’daki kaynağın (X-2) ışımasında mHz mertebesinde yarı periyodik salınım (Quasi-Periodic Oscillation, QPO) belirlendi. NGC 4258’deki kaynağın (X-6) ise farklı zamanlarda alınan gözlem verilerinden yararlanılarak kaynağın X-ışın tayfsal evrimi incelendi ve tayfsal değişim gösterdiği belirlendi. Tayfsal model parametreleri kullanılarak yapılan hesaplamalar sonucu her iki kaynaktaki sıkı cismin yıldız kütleli karadelik olabileceği önerildi. In this thesis, detailed X-ray spectral and timing analysis of two ULXs in the nearby (d < 10 Mpc) galaxies NGC 4736 and NGC 4258 were studied. The X-ray data of Chandra, XMM-Newton and Swift satellites were used for these analysis. Timing analysis of the ULX (X-2) in NGC 4736 revealed a mHz quasi-periodic oscillation (QPO). Also, the X-ray spectral evolution of the ULX (X-6) in NGC 4258 were examined by using multiple observations in the archives. The analysis revealed that the source exhibits spectral variation. The calculations that were done by considering the spectral model parameters suggest that the compact objects in both sources are probably stellar mass black holes. Bu çalışma Ç.Ü. Bu çalışmada bir takım seçilmiş kataklizmik değişkenlerin (CV) XMM-Newton uydusuile alınmış verileri incelenmiştir. Kaynaklardan ilki bir Orta Kutuplu (IP) olanEX Hya olup bu kaynağın yörünge ve dönme çözünürlüklü tayf analizleri detaylıolarak incelenmiştir. Kaynaktan gelen X-ışınlarının açıklanabilmesi adına bileşke birmodel tayf üzerinde uydurulmuştur. Kaynağın soğurma, salma ve madde aktarımıdavranışının yörünge ve dönme periyotu üzerindeki değişiminin yanında farklı yıllardakideğişimi de ortaya konulmuştur.İkinci kaynak, yine bir IP olan FO Aqr'dir. Burada yörünge hareketi üzerinden sistemindönme atım profilinin değişimi incelenmiştir. Sistemdeki farklı soğurma kaynaklarıbirbirinden ayrıştırılabilmiştir. Ve en önemli bulgu olarak da sistemde LMXBlerdekigibi bir ılık soğurganın varlığı bir ilk olarak tespit edilmiştir.Bunların dışında yumuşak X-ışın bileşenlerine sahip iki orta kutupsal sistem olanPQ Gem ve V2069 Cyg de yörünge üzerinden incelenmiştir. Her iki sistemde deX-ışınları yörünge periyotunda disk üzerindeki kitlenin soğurmasından kaynaklanandeğişimler gözlenmiştir. PQ Gem sisteminde diskten kaynaklanan bu soğurma etkisifaz çözünürlüklü tayf analizi neticesinde açık olarak tespit edilebilmiştir.Son olarak iki klasik nova olan V2491 Cyg ve V4743 Sgr novalarının patlama verileriincelenmiştir. Novalarda daha önceden izlenilen yol olan atmosfer modelleriyerine X-ışın tayfını açıklayabilmek adına iyonize eden bir sürem modeli ile birlikteçarpışmalı iyonize ve fotoiyonize olmuş soğurganlar kullanılmıştır. Verilere uydurulanmodeller, novalardaki beyaz cüce sıcaklıkları ve atılan maddedeki elementlerdengelen soğurma çizgilerinin belirlenmesi yolunda umut vaadeden sonuçlar ortaya koymuştur. In this study, XMM-Newton data of selected cataclysmic variables are examined.One of the sources is an Intermediate Polar (IP) EX Hya where the orbital and spinphase resolved spectra are analyzed in depth. A composite model is successfully fitto the spectra in order to explain the X-ray emission from the source. Changes in theemission, absorption and accretion behaviour of the system over the orbital and spinperiod of the system, as well as the changes in the system over two different epochare determined for the first time with detailed phase resolution.The second source is another IP, FO Aqr. The behaviour of the spin pulse of theWhite Dwarf in the system was examined against the orbital modulation. Differentabsorption components in the system are able to be distinguished from each other.And most importantly, the presence of a warm absorber in the system was detectedsimilar to that of LMXBs for the first time.We also study the orbital behaviour of X-rays for PQ Gem and V2069 Cyg which areIPs with soft emission components. Both systems show modulation in X-rays over theorbital period most possibly due to absorption from bulge on the disc. In PQ Gem, theabsorption component from the disc is clearly separated with phase resolved spectralanalysis.Lastly the classical novae V2491 Cyg and V4743 Sgr outburst data are investigated.As opposed to hot white dwarf stellar atmosphere models (expanding or stationary)previously suggested for modelling the X-ray outburst data, an ionizing emissioncontinuum in tandem with collisionally ionized and photoionized absorber is utilized.The fits yield promising results explaining the temperatures of the underlying WDsurface and absorption lines resulting from elements in the ejecta. 128

Bu çalışmada eski bir klasik nova olan RR Pic'in (1925) CHANDRA ACIS-S3 verilerinin analizi sunulmaktadır. Kaynak 0.3-0.5 keV enerji aralığında 0.067±0.002 c/s sayma oranıyla gözlenmiştir. Çift yıldız sisteminin yörünge periyodu X-ışmı dalgaboylarmda bulunmuştur. RR Pic'in X-ışım tayfı bremsstrahlung, fotoelektrik soğurma, 1.1-1.4 keV aralığında iki soğurma çizgisi ve 0.3-1.1 keV aralığında 5 Gaussian salma çizgisi ile ifade edilebilmektedir. Modele en uygun bremsstrahlung sıcaklığı 0.99-1.60 keV aralığında olup, kaynağın soğurul-mamış akısı 0.3-0.5 keV enerji aralığında 2.5ll(1);21 erg cm-2 s-1 olarak bulunmuştur. Soğurma çizgileri Fe, Ne ve Na elementlerinin çeşitli geçişlerine tekabül etmektedir. Salma çizgileri ise S, N, O, C, Ne ve Fe elementlerinin çeşitli geçişlerine tekabül etmektedir. Kesin geçişleri belirlemek için daha iyi tayf çözünürlüklü gözlemlere ihtiyaç vardır. Kaynak tayfı soğuyan akış modelinden ziyade fotoiyonize plazma modeli ile daha iyi açıklanabilmektedir. Nötr hidrojen kolon yoğunluğu faz çözünürlüklü tayf çalışmasında, minimum ve maksimum akıya denk gelen tayflar için 3a güvenilirlik aralığında sırasıyla 0.25İq;1×1022atom/cm2 and 0.64İo;İ4X1022 atom/cm2 olarak değişim göstermektedir. Nötr hidrojen kolon yoğunluğunda görülen bu fark diskin üzerinde kesişme bölgesinde sıcak bir soğurma bölgesinin bulunduğuna işaret etmektedir.Anahtar Kelimeler: Kataklismik Değişkenler, Novalar, X-Işmları, Tayf Analizi, RRPic in this work, the CHANDRA ACIS-S3 data of the old classical nova RR Pic (1925) is presented. The source is detected with a count rate of 0.067±0.002 c/s in the 0.3-5.0 keV energy range. The orbital period of the binary system in X-ray wavelengths is detected. X-ray spectrum of RR Pic can be represented by a composite model of bremsstrahlung with a photoelectric absorption, two absorption lines centered around 1.1-1.4 keV and 5 Gaussian emission lines cen-tered at around 0.3-1.1 keV . The best fit bremsstrahlung temperature derived from the model ranges from 0.99 to 1.60 keV and the unabsorbed X-ray flux is found to be 2.5ll(1);21 erg cm-2 s-1 in the 0.3-5.0 keV range.The absorption lines correspond to several transitions of Fe, Ne and Na. The emission lines correspond to various transitions of S, N, O, C, Ne and Fe ; and observations with better spectral resolution are needed to determine the exact transitions. The source spectrum is better explained with photoionized plasma model rather than the cooling fiow model, it has also been found that the neutral Hydrogen column density differs for orbital minimum and orbital maximum spectra with values 0.25İaılx1022 atoms/cm2 and 0.64İq;İ4X1022 atoms/cm2 respectively at 3

Aynı üzellikteki gürültüler X-ışını cift yıldız sistemlerinde deuu u o o uu u sşgürülmektedir. Sonuşta güc tayï¬arı(-) 1.2-2 eğime sahip olmakla beraber, manyetik ol-ou c uş gmayan sistemlerde cok düşuk frekanslarda eğimlerinde düzleşme güzlenmektedir. We analyzed Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer (RXTE) PCA data and derivedtime series from 27 CVs, 4 AXPs and 1 SGR using the RXTE archive. In general,CVs of diï¬erent types all show broad band noise which can be ï¬tted with power laws,using exponentional cut-oï¬s, and Lorentzians in a similar way to power spectral (noise)characteristics of X-ray Binaries (XRBs). In general terms the power spectra show apower law index of (-)1.2-2. A rather large scale ï¬attening of the power spectra ex-its in nonmagnetic systems in the low to very low frequency range. We observe thatin low and high states/outbursts the noise in the high frequency range and low fre-quency range is changed. CVs show considerably low frequency noise. In addition,we recovered several possible QPOs in the X-ray wavelengths from CVs mainly fromIntermediate Polar systems. AXP and SGR sources which are thought to be poweredivby either magnetic decay or accretion show band limited noise in their low frequencies.We also correlated their equal time interval noise characteristic with their burst statesand discovered that in the two AXPs (1E 2259+586, 1E 1048.1-5937) noise correlateswith their bursts.Keywords: Cataclysmic variables, neutron stars, broad-band noise, quasi periodicoscillationv 78

öz CHANDRA X-ISINI GÖZLEM UYDUSUNUN ÖDÜL KAZANILMIŞ VE ARŞİV VERİLERİNİ KULLANARAK 16 YENİ X-ISINI KAYNAĞI BULUNMASI VE NOVA V382 VELORUM 1999'UN X-ISINI IŞIK EĞRİSİNİN İZLENMESİ KÜPCÜ YOLDAŞ, Aybüke Yüksek Lisans, Fizik Bölümü Tez Yöneticisi: Assist. Prof. Dr. Şölen Balman Haziran 2002, 50 sayfa. Bu tezde Chandra X-ışnı Gözlem Uydusundan (NASA ve Harvard ortak yapımı) ödüllü zamanda alınmış verileri kullanarak 16 yeni X- ışını kaynağı bulundu. Nova V382 Velorum, düşük ve yüksek enerji X-ışını tayf bileşenlerinin kaynağnın çalışılmasına yete cek kadar uzun gözlemlenmiş ikinci nova olması nedeniyle çok önemlidir. V382 Velorum'un düşük enerji tayf akısının zaman içinde azalması beyaz cüce yıldızının soğumaya başladığını göstermektedir. Yüksek enerji tayf bileşenine bakıldığında, nötr hidrojen kolon yoğunluğunun, plazma sıcaklıklarının ve şok hızlarının düştüğü gözlemlenmektedir. Aynı zamanda, X-ışını akısı da 31. günde tepe değerine ulaşıp daha sonra düşüşe geçmiştir. Bu veriler yüksek enerjili X-ışınlarının kaynağının novadan gelen hızlı bir rüzgar ile yavaş bir rüzgarın (çarpışan rüzgarlar modeli) etkileşimi olduğunu göstermektedir. Prof. Dr. Şölen Balman June 2002, 50 pages. In this thesis, 16 new X-ray sources are detected using awarded time from Chan dra X-Ray Observatory. The X-ray spectra of the sources were analysed using four models and classification of these 16 new sources are discussed in the light of their spectral characteristics. Most of the sources can be classified as Cataclysmic Variable, Low Mass X-ray Binary or single star candidates due to their spectral characteristics and luminosities. Spectral analysis on Nova V382 Velorum 1999 are done using CHANDRA archival data sets. Outburst X-ray characterics of Nova V382 Velorum were analyzed and discussed using CHANDRA data and other published observations of the nova with BeppoSAX, RXTE and ASCA. iiiNova V382 Velorum is very important in that it is the second nova observed long enough to study the origin and characteristics of the soft and the hard component of nova X-ray spectrum. The decreasing soft X-ray flux of V382 Velorum shows that the white dwarf has started cooling. For the hard X-ray component, neutral hydrogen column density, plasma temperatures, and shock velocities are found to decrease in time. In the mean time, X-ray flux increases up to a peak value at day 31 and decreases thereafter. According to these evolutionary structures, it can be said that the hard X-rays originate from an interaction of a fast wind and a slow wind (colliding- winds model). Prof. Dr. Şölen Balman January 2002, 77 pages. In this thesis, an up-to-date review of intermediate type cataclysmic variables are made emphasizing timing characteristics. Fundamental timing analysis methods are introduced. Timing analysis on the intermediate polar AE Aquarii is per formed using three sets of ROSAT archival data. We have done timing and spec tral analysis on the intermediate polar YY Draconis using ASCA and ROSAT archival data sets. We have investigated the energetics of the pulse profiles. It is found that X-ray pulse profiles of YY Dra decreases with increasing energy. It is also found that the X-ray spectrum of YY Draconis can be represented by single or multitemperature bremsstrahlung and/or VMEKAL models.
