In the pursuit of fusion power, achieving tritium self-sufficiency stands as a pivotal challenge. Tritium breeding within molten salts is a critical aspect of next-generation fusion reactors, yet experimental measurements of \gls{tbr} have remained elusive. Here we present the results of the \gls{baby} experiment, which represents a pioneering effort in tritium research by utilizing high-energy (\SI{14}{\mega\electronvolt}) neutron irradiation of molten salts, a departure from conventional low-energy neutron approaches. Using a small-scale (\SI{100}{\milli\litre}) molten salt tritium breeding setup, we not only simulated, but also directly measured a \gls{tbr}. This innovative approach provides crucial experimental validation, offering insights unattainable through simulation alone. Moreover, our findings reveal a surprising outcome: tritium was predominantly collected as HT, contrary to the expected TF. This underscores the complexity of tritium behavior in molten salts, highlighting the need for further investigation. This work lays the foundation for a more sophisticated experimental setup, including increasing the volume of the breeder, enhancing neutron detection, and refining tritium collection systems. Such improvements are crucial for advancing our understanding of fusion reactor feasibility and paving the way for future experiments.

The purpose of this paper is to analyze a nonlinear elasticity model previously introduced by the authors for comparing two images, regarded as bounded open subsets of $\R^n$ together with associated vector-valued intensity maps. Optimal transformations between the images are sought as minimisers of an integral functional among orientation-preserving homeomorphisms. The existence of minimisers is proved under natural coercivity and polyconvexity conditions, assuming only that the intensity functions are bounded measurable. Variants of the existence theorem are also proved, first under the constraint that finite sets of landmark points in the two images are mapped one to the other, and second when one image is to be compared to an unknown part of another. The question is studied as to whether for images related by a linear mapping the unique minimizer is given by that linear mapping. For a natural class of functional integrands an example is given guaranteeing that this property holds for pairs of images in which the second is a scaling of the first by a constant factor. However for the property to hold for arbitrary pairs of linearly related images it is shown that the integrand has to depend on the gradient of the transformation as a convex function of its determinant alone. This suggests a new model in which the integrand depends also on second derivatives of the transformation, and an example is given for which both existence of minimizers is assured and the above property holds for all pairs of linearly related images., Comment: Minor changes and new references added

Currently, human drivers outperform self-driving vehicles in many conditions such as collision avoidance. Therefore, understanding human driver behaviour in these conditions will provide insight for future autonomous vehicles. For understanding driver behaviour, risk assessment is applied so far as one of the approaches by using both subjective and objective measurement. Subjective measurement methods such as questionnaires may provide insight into driver risk assessment but there is often significant variability between drivers.Physiological measurements such as heart rate (HR), electroencephalogram (EEG), and electromyogram (EMG) provide more objective measurements of driver risk assessment. HR is often used for measuring driver risk assessment based on observed correlations between HR and risk perception. Previous work has used HR to measure driver risk assessment in self-driving systems, but pedestrian dynamics is not considered for the research. In this study, we observed driver behaviour in certain scenarios which have pedestrian on driving simulator. The scenarios have safe/unsafe situations (i.e., pedestrian crosses road and vehicle may hit pedestrian in one scenario), HR analysis in time/frequency domain is processed for risk assessment. As a result, HR analysis in frequency domain shows certain reasonability for driver risk assessment when driver has pedestrian in its traffic.

A nonlinear elasticity model for comparing images is formulated and analyzed, in which optimal transformations between images are sought as minimizers of an integral functional. The existence of minimizers in a suitable class of homeomorphisms between image domains is established under natural hypotheses. A unified treatment of slip and twinning in Bravais lattices is given, focussing on the case of cubic symmetry, and using the Ericksen energy well formulation, so that interfaces correspond to rank-one connections between the infinitely many crystallographically equivalent energy wells. Twins are defined to be such rank-one connections involving a nontrivial reflection of the lattice across some plane. The slips and twins minimizing shear magnitude for cubic lattices are rigorously calculated, and the conjugates of these and other slips analyzed. It is observed that all rank-one connections between the energy wells for the dual of a Bravais lattice can be obtained explicitly from those for the original lattice, so that in particular the rank-one connections for fcc can be obtained explicitly from those for bcc., Comment: Various corrections and clarifications made. We attempt to describe surface defects in smectic A thin films by formulating a free discontinuity problem - that is, a variational problem in which the order parameter is allowed to have jump discontinuities on some (unknown) set. The free energy functional contains an interfacial energy which penalizes dislocations of the smectic layers at the jump. We discuss mathematical issues related to the existence of minimizers and provide examples of minimizers in some simplified settings.

A simple proof is given of the classical result due to Fatkullin and Slastikov (2005), Liu, Zhang and Zhang (2005) that critical points for the Onsager functional with the Maier-Saupe molecular interaction are axisymmetric, including the case of stable critical points with an additional dipole-dipole interaction (Zhou et al 2007). The proof avoids spherical polar coordinates, instead using an integral identity on the sphere $S^2$. For general interactions with absolutely continuous kernels the smoothness of all critical points is established, generalizing a result of Vollmer (2016) for the Onsager interaction. Hyperspectral imaging is a powerful technology that is plagued by large dimensionality. Herein, we explore a way to combat that hindrance via non-contiguous and contiguous (simpler to realize sensor) band grouping for dimensionality reduction. Our approach is different in the respect that it is flexible and it follows a well-studied process of visual clustering in high-dimensional spaces. Specifically, we extend the improved visual assessment of cluster tendency and clustering in ordered dissimilarity data unsupervised clustering algorithms for supervised hyperspectral learning. In addition, we propose a way to extract diverse features via the use of different proximity metrics (ways to measure the similarity between bands) and kernel functions. The discovered features are fused with $l_{\infty}$-norm multiple kernel learning. Experiments are conducted on two benchmark datasets and our results are compared to related work. These datasets indicate that contiguous or not is application specific, but heterogeneous features and kernels usually lead to performance gain.

Deep learning usually requires big data, with respect to both volume and variety. However, most remote sensing applications only have limited training data, of which a small subset is labeled. Herein, we review three state-of-the-art approaches in deep learning to combat this challenge. The first topic is transfer learning, in which some aspects of one domain, e.g., features, are transferred to another domain. The next is unsupervised learning, e.g., autoencoders, which operate on unlabeled data. The last is generative adversarial networks, which can generate realistic looking data that can fool the likes of both a deep learning network and human. Collision avoidance is a critical task in many applications, such as ADAS (advanced driver-assistance systems), industrial automation and robotics. In an industrial automation setting, certain areas should be off limits to an automated vehicle for protection of people and high-valued assets. These areas can be quarantined by mapping (e.g., GPS) or via beacons that delineate a no-entry area. We propose a delineation method where the industrial vehicle utilizes a LiDAR {(Light Detection and Ranging)} and a single color camera to detect passive beacons and model-predictive control to stop the vehicle from entering a restricted space. The beacons are standard orange traffic cones with a highly reflective vertical pole attached. The LiDAR can readily detect these beacons, but suffers from false positives due to other reflective surfaces such as worker safety vests. Herein, we put forth a method for reducing false positive detection from the LiDAR by projecting the beacons in the camera imagery via a deep learning method and validating the detection using a neural network-learned projection from the camera to the LiDAR space. Herein, we present a system for hyperspectral image segmentation that utilizes multiple class--based denoising autoencoders which are efficiently trained. Moreover, we present a novel hyperspectral data augmentation method for labelled HSI data using linear mixtures of pixels from each class, which helps the system with edge pixels which are almost always mixed pixels. Finally, we utilize a deep neural network and morphological hole-filling to provide robust image classification. Results run on the Salinas dataset verify the high performance of the proposed algorithm.

A significant challenge in object detection is accurate identification of an object's position in image space, whereas one algorithm with one set of parameters is usually not enough, and the fusion of multiple algorithms and/or parameters can lead to more robust results. Herein, a new computational intelligence fusion approach based on the dynamic analysis of agreement among object detection outputs is proposed. Furthermore, we propose an online versus just in training image augmentation strategy. Experiments comparing the results both with and without fusion are presented. We demonstrate that the augmented and fused combination results are the best, with respect to higher accuracy rates and reduction of outlier influences. Outlier Detection is a critical and cardinal research task due its array of applications in variety of domains ranging from data mining, clustering, statistical analysis, fraud detection, network intrusion detection and diagnosis of diseases etc. Over the last few decades, distance-based outlier detection algorithms have gained significant reputation as a viable alternative to the more traditional statistical approaches due to their scalable, non-parametric and simple implementation. In this paper, we present a modified onion peeling (Convex hull) genetic algorithm to detect outliers in a Gaussian 2-D point data set. We present three different scenarios of outlier detection using a) Euclidean Distance Metric b) Standardized Euclidean Distance Metric and c) Mahalanobis Distance Metric. In a multi-source environment, each source has its own credibility. If there is no external knowledge about credibility then we can use the information provided by the sources to assess their credibility. In this paper, we propose a way to measure conflict in a multi-source environment as a normal measure. We examine our algorithm using three simulated examples of increasing conflict and one experimental example. The results demonstrate that the proposed measure can represent conflict in a meaningful way similar to what a human might expect and from it we can identify conflict within our sources., Comment: 4 pages, 8 figures, conference paper

In sensing applications where multiple sensors observe the same scene, fusing sensor outputs can provide improved results. However, if some of the sensors are providing lower quality outputs, the fused results can be degraded. In this work, a multi-sensor conflict measure is proposed which estimates multi-sensor conflict by representing each sensor output as interval-valued information and examines the sensor output overlaps on all possible n-tuple sensor combinations. The conflict is based on the sizes of the intervals and how many sensors output values lie in these intervals. In this work, conflict is defined in terms of how little the output from multiple sensors overlap. That is, high degrees of overlap mean low sensor conflict, while low degrees of overlap mean high conflict. This work is a preliminary step towards a robust conflict and sensor fusion framework. In addition, a sensor fusion algorithm is proposed based on a weighted sum of sensor outputs, where the weights for each sensor diminish as the conflict measure increases. The proposed methods can be utilized to (1) assess a measure of multi-sensor conflict, and (2) improve sensor output fusion by lessening weighting for sensors with high conflict. Using this measure, a simulated example is given to explain the mechanics of calculating the conflict measure, and stereo camera 3D outputs are analyzed and fused. In the stereo camera case, the sensor output is corrupted by additive impulse noise, DC offset, and Gaussian noise. Impulse noise is common in sensors due to intermittent interference, a DC offset a sensor bias or registration error, and Gaussian noise represents a sensor output with low SNR. The results show that sensor output fusion based on the conflict measure shows improved accuracy over a simple averaging fusion strategy., Comment: 15 pages, 9 figures, conference paper
