Abstract

Soft matrices with tuned properties are part of the vast landscape of innovative materials for the restoration of works of art. "Twin chain" polymer networks (TC‐PNs) based on polyvinyl alcohol have proven unique as scaffolds for Cultural Heritage cleaning. They enable optimum adaptability, adhesion, porosity, and connectivity at both micro‐ and nano‐scale resulting in superior time/space‐controlled cleaning operations. In this work, TC‐PNs properties are tuned through a mild crosslinking of the poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA)‐porogen polymer by using sebacic, adipic, or succinic acid. The modified porogens have different structural features imparting a different phase behavior to TC‐PVAs mixtures in aqueous solution, i.e., in pre‐gel systems used to form gels through a liquid–liquid phase separation. The macro‐, micro‐, and nanoscale features of the final gels are characterized by Confocal Laser Scanning Microscopy, Small Angle X‐ray Scattering, Rheology and are related to their cleaning performances. The study shows that the gels cleaning capacity is related to their tortuosity, that can be tailored at the nanoscale. Counterintuitively gels with higher tortuosity show better performances as evidenced by the cleaning of mockups and paintings from Jean Helion, Jackson Pollock, and Tancredi Parmeggiani at Peggy Guggenheim Collection in Venice. Abstract

The application of Ca(OH)2 nanoparticles dispersed in short chain alcohols to adjust the pH of acidic cellulosic substrates (paper, canvas, and wood) has been introduced and largely assessed in conservation practice, and commercial products are available on the market. Recently, some concerns about this methodology were expressed in a technical note ('A Note of Caution on the Use of Calcium Nanoparticle Dispersions as Deacidifying Agents' by Cremonesi (2023)). The main criticism is that carbonation of the hydroxide particles into calcium carbonate could be too slow, and the Ca(OH)2 remaining on the fibers might cause structural damage to cellulose by producing high alkalinity in situ, when water absorbed by the alcohol dispersion or by the cellulose-based support causes dissociation in the nanoparticles. However, in Cremonesi's note, no accurate description of the application method was given, and some fundamental information already present in the literature was overlooked. Here, we give a rebuttal of Cremonesi's conclusions, providing: (1) further evidence that the correct application of the particles' dispersions results in carbonation and in neutral pH values in a few days; and (2) an up-to-date literature survey, in which the Ca(OH)2 nanoparticles' carbonation kinetics is studied in detail, and potential structural damage to cellulosic materials in an alkaline environment is evaluated and ruled out. 46. Logarithmic decay in single-particle relaxations of hydrated lysozyme powder

Abstract

We present the self-dynamics of protein amino acids of hydrated lysozyme powder around the physiological temperature by means of molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. The self-intermediate scattering functions (SISF) of the amino acid residue center-of-mass and of the protein hydrogen atoms display a logarithmic decay over 3 decades of time, from 2 picoseconds to 2 nanoseconds, followed by an exponential alpha-relaxation. This kind of slow dynamics resembles the relaxation scenario within the beta-relaxation time range predicted by the mode coupling theory (MCT) in the vicinity of higher-order singularities. These results suggest a strong analogy between the single-particle dynamics of the protein and the dynamics of colloidal, polymeric and molecular glass-forming liquids., Comment: 4 pages, 5 figures
