Phaseolus lunatus L. is a species of landrace bean widely cultivated in Northeast Brazil. The integration of new technologies in the agricultural sector has highlighted the significance of seed images analysis as a valuable asset in the characterization process. The objective was to assess the morphology of 18 P. lunatus varieties gathered from four states in the Brazilian Northeast. To achieve this, 100 seeds from each variety were utilized, and their images were acquired using a flatbed scanner with a digital resolution of 400 dpi. Subsequently, the images were processed using the ImageJ software package for analyzing seed size, shape and color characteristics. Statistical analyses were performed with SPSS software applying stepwise Linear Discriminant Analysis (LDA). The overall accuracy rate for correct identification was 80.5%. Among the varieties, the lowest classification percentage was attributed to the 'Coquinho Vermelha' variety (39%), while the highest rates were observed for 'Fava Roxa' and 'Fava de Moita' (98%). The morpho-colorimetric classification system successfully discriminated the varieties of P. lunatus produced in the northeastern region of Brazil, highlighting the -+*/high degree of diversity within them. In particular, seeds with uniform coloring or clearly defined secondary color patterns were easier to classify. Motivation: The intrinsic characteristics of islands make them a unique study system for the investigation of ecological and evolutionary dynamics. The Mediterranean Basin, an island‐rich biodiversity hotspot, still lacks a comprehensive spatial database for these geographic features. This study presents the first comprehensive spatial database of all Mediterranean islands larger than 0.01 km2, aiding ecological investigations and interdisciplinary research. Main types of variable contained: The MEDIS spatial database offers detailed information on 39 geographic, climatic, ecological and land‐use variables, including island area, perimeter, isolation metrics, climatic space, terrain data, land cover, palaeogeography, road networks and geological information, providing a multifaceted view of each island's characteristics. Spatial location and grain: The study encompasses 2217 islands in the Mediterranean Basin larger than 0.01 km2. The spatial grain of the datasets on which the selected variables are based varies from 10 m (ESA WorldCover) to 1 km (CHELSA‐BIOCLIM+). Time period and grain: The spatial database incorporates data from various sources, each with its own timeframe, such as the Global Shoreline Vector from 2014 Landsat imagery and the WorldCover dataset from 2021. Historical data like the Paleocoastlines GIS dataset offer insights into island configurations during the Last Glacial Maximum. Major taxa and level of measurement: While not focusing on specific taxa, the study lays the foundation for comprehensive research on Mediterranean islands, facilitating comparisons and investigations into the distribution of native, endemic or alien species. Taxus baccata is a relic-declining species, especially at the southern edge of its natural distribution. On the Island of Sardinia, we found 237 locations where yews grow, being indifferent to substrates, preferring moist sites with northern aspects and with an elevation range of 695–1,225 m a.s.l. We applied the Maximum Entropy algorithm (MaxEnt), using 202 field-based sites and 19 bioclimatic variables, to model the present potential distribution. Our model showed high levels of predictive performances with significant values of AUC (training, 0.962; test, 0.963). Annual precipitation, mean temperature of the warmest month and isothermality were the key drivers for the distribution of yew in Sardinia. The response curves showed that T. baccata prefers annual mean temperatures ranging from 8.65 to 12.55 °C and annual mean precipitation from 770 to 1,085 mm. Most potential suitable conditions were found in northern and central Sardinia. We also modelled future habitat suitability for T. baccata under two different scenarios (ssp245 and ssp585), highlighting a predicted drastic reduction, up to >95% in the worst scenario, of the habitat suitability for yews by the end of this century. The grapevine was one of the earliest domesticated fruit crops and has been cultivated since ancient times. It is considered one of the most important fruit crops worldwide for wine and table grape production. The current grape varieties are the outcome of prolonged selection initiated during the domestication process of their wild relative. Recent genetic studies have shed light on the origins of the modern domestic grapevine in western Europe, suggesting that its origin stems from the introgression between eastern domestic grapes and western wild grapes. However, the origin of ancient grapevines remains largely unexplored. In this study, we conducted an extensive analysis of 2228 well-preserved waterlogged archaeological grape pips from two sites in Sardinia (Italy), dated to the Late Bronze Age (ca. 1300–1100 BC) and the Iron Age (4th and 3rd centuries BC). Using morphometrics and linear discriminant analyses, we compared the archaeological grape pips with modern reference collections to differentiate between wild and domestic grape types and to investigate similarities with 330 modern cultivars. Grape pips from the Late Bronze Age displayed a high percentage of similarity with domesticated grapevines, with a small percentage assigned to wild ones, while the majority of grape pips from the Iron Age were classified as domestic. Discriminant analyses revealed that both white and red grape varieties were cultivated during the Late Bronze and Iron Ages, suggesting a high level of diversification in grape cultivation. Furthermore, a high percentage of archaeological grape pips from both periods showed strong similarities with modern cultivars from the Caucasus and Balkans. This suggests that the great diversity of grapevines present in Sardinia could result from interbreeding between western Asian cultivars and local grapevines that began in the Late Bronze Age. Additionally, a substantial proportion of archaeological grape pips exhibited similar morphometric characteristics to two important Mediterranean grape cultivars: "Muscat à petits grains blancs" and "Garnacha". European wild carnations (Dianthus) are represented by a high number of taxa organized in unresolved taxonomies. In particular, taxa belonging to the Dianthus virgineus L. complex in the Central Mediterranean have been delimited mainly with qualitative morphological data and still await quantitative investigations, which are vital to understand boundaries and relations among plant diversity groups. Here, we examine the phenotypic features of nuclear genome organization testing for species boundaries in this complex. We have studied the chromosome number, the total haploid length (THL), and the relative genome size (RGS) in 122 populations belonging to 25 out of 33 taxa of the complex. All the studied populations have 2n = 2x = 30 chromosomes, and the THL ranges from 14.09 to 20.71 μm. Genome size estimations support the absence of polyploidization events, but show a certain degree of variation (0.318–0.423 arbitrary units). The RGS variation is not in agreement with current taxonomic treatment, but rather shows a geographical pattern, with higher values in Sicily and Sardinia. No correlation between the THL and the RGS was detected, possibly due to the stable chromosome number and the small size of chromosomes. The discovery of well-preserved fossil Vitis L. seeds from the Gelasian stage in Italy has provided a unique opportunity to investigate the systematics of fossilized Vitis species. Through seed image analyses and elliptical Fourier transforms of fossil Vitis seeds from the sites Buronzo−Gifflenga and Castelletto Cervo II, we pointed out a strong relationship to the group of extant Eurasian Vitis species. However, classification analyses highlighted challenges in accurately assigning the fossil grape seeds to specific modern species. Morphological comparisons with modern Vitis species revealed striking similarities between the fossil seeds and V. vinifera subsp. sylvestris, as well as several other wild species from Asia. This close morphological resemblance suggests the existence of a population of V. vinifera sensu lato in Northen Italy during the Gelasian. These findings contributed to our understanding of the evolution and the complex interplay between ancient and modern Vitis species. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The winemaking process generates an annual global production of about 10 million tons of waste consisting of stalks, skin, and seeds. The possible reutilization of wine pomace is strictly linked to its chemical composition. In this preliminary study, three different Sardinian white grapes (Malvasia, Vermentino and Nasco) grown in the same area were evaluated through a whole wine production chain. To reduce environmental impact, all the grapes were treated following the integrated production practice (IPP) strategies. The adopted agronomic methods and the main physico-chemical parameters of the fresh fruits and musts were evaluated. A fully qualitative and quantitative characterization of the phenolic fraction of the pomace extracts was performed by HPLC-DAD after a post-winemaking process. Water and ethanol were utilized as green solvents in the extraction process. Additionally, the entire pomace post-winemaking process was carried out within the winery facilities to reduce energy loss and road transportation. The findings demonstrated that large amounts of beneficial polyphenols are present in pomace extracts, and that the type of grape used, agronomic practices, and winemaking method all influence the quantity and quality of the extracts. The polyphenol concentrations in the Vermentino (28,391.5 ± 7.0 mg/kg) and Malvasia pomace (11,316.3 ± 6.5 mg/kg) were found to be the highest and lowest, respectively. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Hypericum scruglii Bacch., Brullo & Salmeri is an endangered endemic plant of Sardinia, and the phloroglucinol compounds identified in this species have been reported to inhibit the activity of the Human Immunodeficiency Virus. Seed banks are a genetic repository that effectively preserve taxa of conservation interest, and they hold knowledge about the biology and germination ecophysiology of the taxa they preserve. The main goals of this study were to investigate the germination requirements for H. scruglii, to evaluate the seed viability after eight years of long-term conservation and to suggest an efficient protocol for germination. Seeds stored at -25 [degrees]C in the seed bank were tested at temperatures from 5 to 30 [degrees]C and 25/10 [degrees]C. Base temperature ([T.sub.b]) and thermal time ([[theta].sub.50]) for germination were estimated. Seeds of H. scruglii germinated over a wide range of temperatures, responding positively to high temperatures and 25/10 [degrees]C. [T.sub.b] was estimated at 4.92 [degrees]C, and [[theta].sub.50] was estimated at 198.27 degree days. The high viability detected in seeds of H. scruglii allows us to suggest the use of seeds stored in a seed bank when fresh material for plant propagation is scarce. Our results provide new and useful baseline information for implementing conservation and multiplication strategies for this endangered medicinal plant. Tailings and mine dumps are often pollutant sources that pose serious environmental threats to surrounding areas. The use of pioneer vascular plants to extract or stabilize metals is considered among the more effective mine tailing reclamation techniques. The study aimed at evaluating the phytoremediation potential of Pinus halepensis in abandoned mine-tailing (SW-Sardinia, Italy). Plant ability to tolerate high Zn, Pb, and Cd concentration and their accumulation in roots and aerial parts were assessed at greenhouse conditions. Experiments were performed on 45 seedlings planted in different substrates (mine-tailings, mine-tailings compost-amended, and reference) and on 15 seedlings grown spontaneously in the contaminated mine site investigated with their own substrates. The phytostabilization potential of plant was evaluated through biological accumulation and translocation indexes together with plant survival and biometric parameters. The outcomes showed the adaptability of P. halepensis to grow and survive in contaminated substrates. Compost addition did not improve plant survival and growth, however, it enhanced total carbon and nitrogen contents of soil, restricted metal bioavailability, and accumulation in plant aerial parts. These findings highlight that P. halepensis may be considered for phytostabilization given the great potential to limit Zn, Pb, and Cd toxicity in plant tissues by applying compost amendment in metal contaminated mine sites. The novelty of this study is the selection of Pinus halepensis Mill. as a proper tree species for long-term phytoremediation of multi-heavy metal mine tailing sites. This plant species not only had adaptation to the Mediterranean climate and could tolerate high temperatures and high metal concentrations, but also showed high survival and growth percentage of its roots and epigean organs in highly contaminated mine tailing. Pinus halepensis could limit metal accumulation and toxicity in the aerial part of the plant with the addition of compost amendment. This study demonstrates that compost can enhance soil properties and modify metal bioavailability. Despite the wide amount of scientific contributions published on alien plant species, their diffusion dynamics, and their interactions with native taxa, it is increasingly difficult to slow down their spreading and their negative impact on habitats. Last recent years, in fact, a sharp rise in the number of new alien plant taxa introduced in Italy and Europe has been recorded. The aim of this work is to investigate most of the Italian territory in order to verify whether this alarming trend is still underway. Specimen collections and/or observations of alien plants have been performed in as many as 12 Italian regions. All the collected specimens are stored in public or private herbaria. Taxa have been identified according to the literature from the countries of origin of the investigated taxa, while the nomenclature followed the current international references. Updates on 106 taxa are reported. In particular, among 117 new records, 89 are first records, 27 are changes to status and there is 1 extinction. Seven new taxa for Italian alien flora are reported, two of which are new to Europe. The administrative regions with the highest number of records are Calabria (48), Sardegna (17) and Sicilia (15). Five of the surveyed taxa, for the first time, have been considered invasive aliens to Italian territory. The unfrequent amount of original results provided by this work, over the simple importance of data itself, proves how floristic investigation, still today, represents one of the most effective tools in broadening the current knowledge about alien taxa and their dynamics.
