2. Strange Baryon Production and Projectile Fragmentation in p–A Collisions at the AGS

Abstract

Experiment 910 (E910) has studied proton-nucleus collisions at 12.3 and 17.5 GeV incident energies using a variety of targets. Centrality selection is provided via “grey” track multiplicity which can be statistically related to ν, the number of scatterings of the proton in the target nucleus. Previously published semi-inclusive measurements of Ν production are discussed and preliminary measurements of “leading” Ν production in 17.5 GeV p-Au collisions are presented as a function of ν. The data indicate that the probability for the projectile to fragment into a strange baryon increases significantly with increasing ν for ν≤3; an extrapolation of the E910 data to nucleus-nucleus collisions can reproduce most of the enhancement in Ν production observed in Pb-Pb collisions at 40, 80 and 160 A. GeV. Preliminary measurements of Ξ− production in 17.5 GeV p-Au collisions show a rapid increase in yield with increasing ν. The data are discussed in the context of the Van Hove fragmentation model. Preliminary proton and pion spectra are presented for 12.3 GeV p-Be collisions. The data show a rapid degradation of outgoing proton momenta with increasing N grey while only modest changes are observed in the pion fragmentation spectra.

Abstract

Experiments E866 and E917 at the AGS have measured the differential invariant yields of positive and negative charged kaons from Au+Au collisions at beam kinetic energies in the laboratory of 2, 4, 6, 8, and 10.8 A·GeV. At each beam energy, a multiplicity array is used to select on the centrality of the collision.

Abstract

Antiproton production in heavy ion collisions reflects subtle interplay between initial production and absorption by nucleons. Because the AGS energies (10--20 A(center-dot)GeV/c) are close to the antiproton production threshold, antiproton may be sensitive to cooperative processes such as QGP and hadronic multi-step processes. On the other hand, antiproton has been proposed as a probe of baryon density due to large N(anti N) annihilation cross sections. Cascade models predict the maximum baryon density reaches about 10 times the normal nucleus density in central Au+Au collisions, where the strong antiproton absorption is expected. In this paper, the authors show systematic studies of antiproton production from p+A to Au+Au collisions.

Abstract

Recent π − π − correlation measurements and deuteron to proton yield ratio measurements for AuAu collisions from Brookhaven E866 are presented. These measurements allow us, with some interpretation, to deduce the size of the participant region in a heavy ion collision. An unpredicted rise of the apparent source size is seen in the π − π − data at midrapidity. No corresponding drop in the deuteron to proton yield ratio is seen. Further experimental study is needed to improve the statistical significance of the correlation result and to determine whether it can be explained by conventional hadronic means.

Abstract

In this article, we present recent results on particle production from Au+Au collisions at 11 A GeV/c obtained by the E866 experiment. The experiment studies the particle production in high baryon density matter created in central Au + Au collisions. Preliminary results of proton and pion production have been reported in previous Quark Matter conferences. Two particle correlation data for Au + Au collisions in this experiment are presented in another paper in this conference.

Abstract

This paper presents recent results from Experiment 859 at the BNL AGS, focussing on strangeness ( K ± , Λ, Λ ), rare probes ( p , φ) and two-particle correlations. Highlights of the paper include an analysis of the centrality dependence of K ± yields in terms of the number of participants, a brief review of the current status of the E859 Λ and Λ data, an analysis of the target dependence of p yields in terms of p K − ratio's, results of a re-analysis of Λ feed-down contamination of p 's, a comparison of the cenal SiAu and pp φ yields through the φ K − ratio, an extremely preliminary study of the centrality dependence of the φ line-shape, a summary of the centrality dependence of two-π correlation source sizes, and a comparison of results from two-dimensional analyses of the two-π and two-K + correlation functions.

Abstract

In this paper we report on a Monte-Carlo program, SToF, developed to evaluate the performance of scintillator-based Time-of-Flight (TOF) detectors. This program has been used in the design of the TOF system for the PHENIX experiment at RHIC. The program was used to evaluate the intrinsic time-of-flight resolution of various scintillator and light-guide geometries, and the results of these simulations are presented here. The simulation results agree extremely well with measured pulse-height and time distributions with one adjustable parameter. These results, thus, explain also the reduced quantities, such as the position dependence of the time resolution, etc, implying that SToF will be generally useful for estimating the performance of TOF detectors.

Abstract

Fluctuations in pseudorapidity distributions of charged particles from central collisions of 16 O+Al and 16 O+Cu at 14.6 A GeV/ c are analyzed using scaled factorial moments. A power-law growth of moments with decreasing bin size is observed down to δη ∼ 0.1. About half the measured signal remains after making corrections based on Monte Carlo calculations with Fritiof and GEANT which include γ-conversions, Dalitz decays and detector effects.

Abstract

It has become more common in telecommunications and other standby power applications to initially install the minimum size battery required and to subsequently install additional battery capacity as service loads and power demands increase at local sites. Many installations even provide planned unused space in the installation in anticipation for additional switches, rectifiers and batteries to accommodate future growth in a local area. Typically battery capacity is increased by paralleling one or more new battery strings with the battery already installed. Theoretically, this approach should be acceptable provided that certain precautions are observed. The purpose of this paper is to provide detailed data on the characteristics of batteries, VRLA designs in particular, operated in parallel configurations.

14. A discussion about water loss, compression and the VRLA cell

Abstract

Various theories have been proposed to explain premature loss of electrical capacity experienced by some valve-regulated lead acid (VRLA) cells and batteries. Most recently, several of the theories have focused on cell dryout, loss of glass mat separator compression and negative plate charge imbalances resulting in undercharged cells. This paper presents a model for water loss using inputs derived from both laboratory and field data collected over the past 15 years. This model is applied to a typical Absolyte IIP cell to predict water loss over a 20 year period. The water-loss prediction is compared to both actual measured values on field-aged product and to a laboratory test that examined the effect of water loss on cell performance and impedance. An alternative failure mode, loss of separator compression, is also presented and discussed. To conclude, this paper proposes that the loss of separator compression, not water loss per se, is a primary contributing factor in premature capacity degradation of VRLA cells. The loss of compression relates to the materials used in, and the design of, the glass mat contained in the cells.

Abstract

PHENIX has measured the centrality dependence of charged hadron p_T spectra from central Au+Au collisions at sqrt(s_NN)=130 GeV. The truncated mean p_T decreases with centrality for p_T > 2 GeV/c, indicating an apparent reduction of the contribution from hard scattering to high p_T hadron production. For central collisions the yield at high p_T is shown to be suppressed compared to binary nucleon-nucleon collision scaling of p+p data. This suppression is monotonically increasing with centrality, but most of the change occurs below 30% centrality, i.e. for collisions with less than about 140 participating nucleons. Abstract

The first data from a 16O beam of total energy 232 GeV at the BNL Tandem-AGS are reported. A lead-glass array covering the laboratory pseudo-rapidity interval 1.25 < η < 2.44 recorded the energy emitted from 16O interactions in Au, Cu, and Mylar and from proton interactions in Au. The shapes of the energy spectra imply that a nucleon loses most of its energy in the first few collisions. Consequently a simple description of the observed 16O+Cu and 16O+Au spectra as a properly weighted convolution of the observed p + Au spectrum is obtained. It is shown that 16O nuclei at this energy can be substantially stopped by nuclei of the size of Cu. An estimate of the energy density for central collisions is given.

Abstract

Recent advances in the quantitative application of acoustic sounders to studies of the atmospheric boundary layer are described. Precise measurement of the echo strength is shown to provide a means of estimating the structure parameters for wind velocity and temperature. Extraction of the Doppler shift provides a method for obtaining information on the mean airflow and small-scale fluctuations in wind velocity. © 1980, The Institution of Electronic and Radio Engineers.
