This study investigates the use of a masked autoencoder (MAE) to address the challenge of filling gaps in high-resolution (1 km) sea surface temperature (SST) fields caused by cloud cover, which often result in gaps in the SST data and/or blurry imagery in blended SST products. Our study demonstrates that MAE, a deep learning model, can efficiently learn the anisotropic nature of small-scale ocean fronts from numerical simulations and reconstruct the artificially masked SST images. The MAE model is trained and evaluated on synthetic SST fields and tested on real satellite SST data from the Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) sensor on the Suomi NPP satellite. We demonstrate that the MAE model trained on numerical simulations can provide a computationally efficient alternative for filling gaps in satellite SST. MAE can reconstruct randomly occluded images with a root mean square error (RMSE) of under 0.2 °C for masking ratios of up to 80 %. A trained MAE model in inference mode is exceptionally efficient, requiring 3 orders of magnitude (approximately 5000×) less time compared to the conventional approaches of cubic radial basis interpolation and Kriging tested on a single CPU. The ability to reconstruct high-resolution SST fields under cloud cover has important implications for understanding and predicting global and regional climates and detecting small-scale SST fronts that play a crucial role in the exchange of heat, carbon, and nutrients between the ocean surface and deeper layers. Our findings highlight the potential of deep learning models such as MAE to improve the accuracy and resolution of SST data at kilometer scales. This presents a promising avenue for future research in the field of small-scale ocean remote sensing analyses.

We developed a low-cost methane sensing node incorporating two metal oxide (MOx) sensors (Figaro Engineering TGS2611-E00 and TGS2600), humidity and temperature sensing, data storage, and telemetry. We deployed the prototype sensor alongside a reference methane analyzer at two sites: one outdoors and one indoors. We collected data at each site for several months across a range of environmental conditions (particularly temperature and humidity) and methane levels. We explored calibration models to investigate the performance of our system and its suitability for methane background monitoring and enhancement detection, first selecting a linear regression to fit a sensor baseline response and then fitting methane response by the sensor deviation from baseline. We achieved moderate accuracy in a 2 to 10 ppm methane range compared to data from the reference analyzer (RMSE < 0.6 ppm), but we found that the sensor response varied over time, possibly as a result of changes in non-targeted gas concentrations. We suggest that this cross sensitivity may be responsible for mixed results in previous studies. We discuss the implications of our results for the use of these and similar inexpensive MOx sensors for methane monitoring in the 2 to 10 ppm range.

ABSTRACT: Heat stress (HS) markedly affects postabsorptive energetics and protein metabolism. Circulating urea nitrogen increases in multiple species during HS and it has been traditionally presumed to stem from increased skeletal muscle proteolysis; however, this has not been empirically established. We hypothesized HS would increase activation of the calpain and proteasome systems as well as increase degradation of autophagosomes in skeletal muscle. To test this hypothesis, lactating dairy cows (~139 d in milk; parity ~2.4) were exposed to thermal neutral (TN) or HS conditions for 7 d (8 cows/environment). To induce HS, cattle were fitted with electric blankets for the duration of the heating period and the semitendinosus was biopsied on d 7. Heat stress increased rectal temperature (1.3°C) and respiratory rate (38 breaths per minute) while it decreased dry matter intake (34%) and milk yield (32%). Plasma urea nitrogen (PUN) peaked following 3 d (46%) and milk urea nitrogen (MUN) peaked following 4 d of environmental treatment and while both decreased thereafter, PUN and MUN remained elevated compared with TN (PUN: 20%; MUN: 27%) on d 7 of HS. Contrary to expectations, calpain I and II abundance and activation and calpain activity were similar between groups. Likewise, relative protein abundance of E3 ligases, muscle atrophy F-box protein/atrogin-1 and muscle ring-finger protein-1, total ubiquitinated proteins, and proteasome activity were similar between environmental treatments. Finally, autophagosome degradation was also unaltered by HS. Counter to our hypothesis, these results suggest skeletal muscle proteolysis is not increased following 7 d of HS and call into question the presumed dogma that elevated skeletal muscle proteolysis, per se, drives increased AA mobilization.

Methane, a major contributor to climate change, is emitted by a variety of natural and anthropogenic sources. Commercially available lab-grade instruments for sensing trace methane are expensive, and previous efforts to develop inexpensive, field-deployable trace methane sensors have had mixed results. Industrial and commercial metal oxide (MOx) methane sensors, which are intended for leak detection and safety monitoring, can potentially be repurposed and adapted for low-concentration sensing. As an initial step towards developing a low-cost sensing system, we characterize the performance of five off-the-shelf MOx sensors for 2–10 ppm methane detection in a laboratory setting (Figaro Engineering TGS2600, TGS2602, TGS2611-C00, TGS2611-E00, and Henan Hanwei Electronics MQ4). We identify TGS2611-C00, TGS2611-E00, and MQ4 as promising for trace methane sensing but show that variations in ambient humidity and temperature pose a challenge for the sensors in this application.

Abstract The infant gut microbiome contains a portion of bacteria that originate from the maternal gut. In the infant gut these bacteria encounter a new metabolic environment that differs from the adult gut, consequently requiring adjustments in their activities. We used pilot community RNA sequencing data (metatranscriptomes) from ten mother-infant dyads participating in the NiPPeR Study to characterize bacterial gene expression shifts following mother-to-infant transmission. Maternally-derived bacterial strains exhibited large scale gene expression shifts following the transmission to the infant gut, with 12,564 activated and 14,844 deactivated gene families. The implicated genes were most numerous and the magnitude shifts greatest in Bacteroides spp. This pilot study demonstrates environment-dependent, strain-specific shifts in gut bacteria function and underscores the importance of metatranscriptomic analysis in microbiome studies.

Learner-Centered Teaching (LCT), as opposed to teacher-centered practices, actively engages students in the learning process. In this paper, we discuss the importance of adopting LCT strategies in family science courses to improve student learning outcomes. Family science is particularly apt for LCT because of the interpersonal focus of the discipline. To help fill an important gap in the literature, seven LCT strategies are articulated within the specific context of family science. We highlight the following seven approaches: small group activities, questioning, think-pair-share discussions, gaming, in-class writing, low-stakes quizzes, and flipped classroom design. In addition to describing the approaches, we discuss class size, adapting the techniques for online courses, and working with students who require accommodations. Finally, we share evaluation data from students that speaks to four of the seven LCT strategies. Our hope is that this paper will offer ready-made ideas that family science instructors may adopt. To conclude, we discuss implications, challenges in implementing LCT, and areas of future research.

Systematic reviews and meta-analyses aggregate research findings across studies and populations, making them a valuable form of research evidence. Over the past decade, studies in medical education using these methods have increased by 630%. However, many manuscripts are not publication-ready due to inadequate planning and insufficient analyses. These guidelines aim to improve the clarity and comprehensiveness of reporting methodologies and outcomes, ensuring high quality and comparability. They align with existing standards like PRISMA, providing examples and best practices. Adhering to these guidelines is crucial for publication consideration in "Anatomical Sciences Education."

Background: The purpose of the study is to determine whether the addition of antidepressants provides measurable benefit in diminishing symptoms of depression, such as anhedonia, hopelessness and poor self-esteem, in veterans with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and comorbid major depressive disorder (MDD) who are on automatic positive airway pressure (APAP) therapy. Methods: This is a retrospective study, involving veterans with MDD and treated OSA who were followed for 3 months. All veterans were compliant with APAP therapy for at least six months prior to their first mental health clinic appointment. The Clinically Useful Depression Outcome Scale (CUDOS) was administered during the first appointment and each subsequent visit with the respective psychiatrist to monitor mood symptoms. The CUDOS total scores were compared between the first visit, APAP pre- antidepressant period and after 3 months of treatment with an antidepressant. Results: The analysis was based on 47 participants, CUDOS scores decreased significantly from the initial score to month 3 with addition of antidepressants, as assessed using a Wilcoxon signed rank test for the paired observations within each participant (p < 0.01), The median decrease was 21 points with an interquartile range of 14.5–26. Evaluation of the distribution of CUDOS cardinal symptoms of depression (anhedonia, poor self-esteem, and hopelessness) scores shows that scores for each item were reduced. Limitations: Our early work underscores the need for more definitive studies, these results are not ready for adoption to clinical care. Conclusion: Adding pharmacotherapy to patients with depressive symptoms on APAP has significant clinical benefits.

Survey-based research is vital in education and social sciences, offering insights into human behaviors and perceptions. The prevalence of such studies in medical education has risen by 33% over the past decade. Despite this growth, the utility of survey findings depends on the study design quality and measure validity. Many manuscripts are rejected due to poor planning and lack of validity evidence. These guidelines aim to improve the rigor and reporting of survey-based research, ensuring credibility and reproducibility. They apply to various survey tools and evaluations, setting a standard for manuscript quality and informing the review process for "Anatomical Science Education."

The influx of millions of Syrian refugees into Turkey has rapidly changed the population distribution along the Dead Sea Rift and East Anatolian fault zones. In contrast to other countries in the Middle East where refugees are accommodated in camp environments, the majority of displaced individuals in Turkey are integrated into local cities, towns, and villages – placing stress on urban settings and increasing potential exposure to strong earthquake shaking. Yet displaced populations are often unaccounted for in the census-based population models used in earthquake fatality estimations. This study creates a minimally modeled refugee gridded population model and analyzes its impact on semi-empirical fatality estimations across southeast Turkey. Daytime and nighttime fatality estimates were produced for five fault segments at earthquake magnitudes 5.8, 6.4, and 7.0. Baseline fatality estimates calculated from census-based population estimates for the study area varied in scale from tens to thousands of fatalities, with higher death totals in nighttime scenarios. Refugee fatality estimations were analyzed across 500 semi-random building occupancy distributions. Median fatality estimates for refugee populations added non-negligible contributions to earthquake fatalities at four of five fault locations, increasing total fatality estimates by 7–27 %. These findings communicate the necessity of incorporating refugee statistics into earthquake fatality estimations in southeast Turkey and the ongoing importance of placing environmental hazards in their appropriate regional and temporal context.

This study evaluated the effect of vitamins C and E as antioxidants on the physiological and histopathological changes induced by abamectin pesticide in liver, kidney and testis of male albino rats. Thirty male albino rats were divided into five groups of 6 rats each. First group served as control, while the second group received 10 mg/kg b.wt of abamectin orally, the third group received abamectin daily and 160 mg/kg b.wt of vitamin C two times per week. The fourth group received abamectin daily plus 50 mg/kg b.wt of vitamin E two times per week, while the fifth group received abamectin daily plus vitamins C and E two times per week. The experiment was conducted for six weeks. Abamectin was found to induce, hepato renal and testicular toxicity in rats, since the biochemical parameter of liver function (i.e. alanine amino transferase (ALT), aspartame amino transferase (AST), acid phosphatase (AP), glucose, total protein, albumin) and kidney function (i.e. creatinine, urea, uric acid, cholesterol and triglycerides) were highly affected. These effects were demonstrated by histopathological examination of liver, kidney and testis tissues. These observations were much reduced in the vitamin-treated groups. In conclusion, it appears that vitamins C and E, or in combination (as antioxidants) ameliorate the hepato-renal and testicular toxicity of abamectin, but are not completely protective, especially in liver tissue.

Existing research explains academic course failure with two contrasting narratives; one narrative is negative, and the other is more hopeful. To reconcile these contrasting narratives, this study explored students' perspectives on failing a course. The findings offer practical implications for higher education policy, student-faculty/staff relationships, and institutional efforts.

Using a constructivist paradigm, this qualitative study investigated the impact of social identities on how professionalism is learned, practiced, and challenged by new professionals in student affairs. Collaborators in this study included 25 recent graduates of a student affairs professional preparation program. Findings suggest race, gender, age, and sexual orientation were salient factors in the construction and deconstruction of traditional norms of professionalism, as well as in the reconstruction of professionalism that centers equity and authenticity.

Growth in the online survey market may be increasing response burden and possibly jeopardizing higher response rates. This meta-analysis evaluated survey trends over one decade (2011-2020) to determine: (1) changes in survey publication rates over time, (2) changes in response rates over time, (3) typical response rates within health sciences education research, (4) the factors influencing survey completion levels, and (5) common gaps in survey methods and outcomes reporting. Study I estimated survey publication trends between 2011 and 2020 using articles published in the top three health sciences education research journals. Study II searched the anatomical sciences education literature across six databases and extracted study/survey features and survey response rates. Time plots and a proportional meta-analysis were performed. Per 2926 research articles, the annual estimated proportion of studies with survey methodologies has remained constant, with no linear trend (p > 0.050) over time (Study I). Study II reported a pooled absolute response rate of 67% (95% CI = 63.9-69.0) across 360 studies ("k"), totaling 115,526 distributed surveys. Despite response rate oscillations over time, no significant linear trend (p = 0.995) was detected. Neither survey length, incentives, sponsorship, nor population type affected absolute response rates (p [greater than or equal to] 0.070). Only 35% (120 of 339) of studies utilizing a Likert scale reported evidence of survey validity. Survey response rates and the prevalence of studies with survey methodologies have remained stable with no linear trends over time. We recommend researchers strive for a typical absolute response rate of 67% or higher and clearly document evidence of survey validity for empirical studies.

This qualitative inquiry examined the supervisory practices of 12 student-affairs professionals who were identified by their supervisees as modeling the tenets of inclusive supervision. Through a deductive research design and pattern-matching analysis, this study sought to test the consistency of the inclusive supervision model through the practices of supervisors. Analysis suggests a strong congruence between supervisor practices and the tenets of inclusive supervision.

This study summarizes employment benefits from across 155 U.S. allopathic medical schools, investigates differences in employment benefits according to institutional characteristics, and explores possible connections between employment benefits and institutional wealth. Employment benefits data were extracted from institutions' websites across four categories: time-off, time-away, retirement contributions, and Employee Assistance Programs (EAPs)/family benefits. This dataset was mixed with other publicly available datasets sourced through the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC), the American Council on Education (ACE), and the American Association of University Professors (AAUP) to conduct additional analyses. Nationally, medical schools offered an average of 31 vacation/sick days and 12 paid holidays. Schools typically offered 4 out of 8 time-away benefits. Employers' retirement contributions ranged from 3.0% to 15.5%, with a mean contribution of 8.5%. A total of 43.2% (67 of 155) of medical schools offered a pension. Collectively, private medical schools offered fewer time-away benefits and more EAP/family benefits compared to public schools. Universities with larger endowments per student were associated with a higher number of EAP/family benefits offerings (r = 0.543, p < 0.001). Institutional wealth did not influence other benefits offerings. The quantity/quality of most employment benefits offered at allopathic medical schools were wide-ranging, tended not to vary by region or school control, and were not a function of institutional wealth.

Calcifying foraminifera are expected to be endangered by ocean acidification; however, the response of a complete community kept in natural sediment and over multiple generations under controlled laboratory conditions has not been constrained to date. During 6 months of incubation, foraminiferal assemblages were kept and treated in natural sediment with pCO2-enriched seawater of 430, 907, 1865 and 3247 μatm pCO2. The fauna was dominated by Ammonia aomoriensis and Elphidium species, whereas agglutinated species were rare. After 6 months of incubation, pore water alkalinity was much higher in comparison to the overlying seawater. Consequently, the saturation state of Ωcalc was much higher in the sediment than in the water column in nearly all pCO2 treatments and remained close to saturation. As a result, the life cycle (population density, growth and reproduction) of living assemblages varied markedly during the experimental period, but was largely unaffected by the pCO2 treatments applied. According to the size–frequency distribution, we conclude that foraminifera start reproduction at a diameter of 250 μm. Mortality of living Ammonia aomoriensis was unaffected, whereas size of large and dead tests decreased with elevated pCO2 from 285 μm (pCO2 from 430 to 1865 μatm) to 258 μm (pCO2 3247 μatm). The total organic content of living Ammonia aomoriensis has been determined to be 4.3% of CaCO3 weight. Living individuals had a calcium carbonate production rate of 0.47 g m−2 a−1, whereas dead empty tests accumulated a rate of 0.27 g m−2 a−1. Although Ωcalc was close to 1, approximately 30% of the empty tests of Ammonia aomoriensis showed dissolution features at high pCO2 of 3247 μatm during the last 2 months of incubation. In contrast, tests of the subdominant species, Elphidium incertum, stayed intact. Our results emphasize that the sensitivity to ocean acidification of the endobenthic foraminifera Ammonia aomoriensis in their natural sediment habitat is much lower compared to the experimental response of specimens isolated from the sediment.

The SAFARI-2000 intensive study site is located 13 km WSW of Skukuza. Detailed measurements of the exchanges of energy, water, carbon dioxide and other substances between the savanna and the atmosphere have been made there since April 2000. This paper provides basic information regarding the climate, soils and vegetation at the site. The site is located near the top of a gentle rise in an undulating granitic landscape. Most of the data were collected within a 300 m square centred on the flux tower situated at 25@01.184' S, 31@29.813' E and oriented true north. The tower stands exactly on the ecotone between a ridgetop broad-leafed Combretum savanna on sandy soil and a midslope fme-leafed Acacia savanna on clayey soil. The ecotone is marked by a 10 m wide band of sedges. The tree basal area within the sample square was 6.8 mVha (@ 1.0 standard error), the tree density 128 @ 16 plants/ha and the tree crown cover 24 @ 4 . Shrubs, defined as woody plants greater than 0.5 m but less than 2.5 m tall, contributed a further 7.6 crown cover. The basal area weighted mean height of the trees was 9 m, and the maximum height 13m. Nineteen woody plant species were recorded within the square, with 70 of the woody plant basal area dominated by Combretum apiculatum, Sclerocarya birrea and Acacia nigrescens. The rooted basal area of grasses was 7.1 @ 0.6 and in June 2000 the grass standing crop was 400 g DM m2.

From a total of 1211 adult & paediatric patients receiving home ventilation (HV) supervised by Royal Brompton Hospital between 1/1/06 and 30/6/06 the respiratory support team received an average of 528 daytime calls/month and 14/month out of hours calls to a telephone helpline. Diagnoses included: neuromuscular disease, chest wall disease, COPD, obesity hypoventilation and non-COPD lung disease. 99% received non-invasive ventilation, 1% tracheostomy ventilation. 149 required 2 ventilators for near 24 hour ventilator dependency, the remainder were classified as 1 (17%) 2 (33%) & 3 (50%) night dependency as were able to breathe spontaneously for this period. 50% used bilevel positive pressure ventilators, 48% inspiratory pressure ventilators and 2% volume ventilators. In 188 calls a home visit was carried out because of ventilator or associated equipment-related problems. Despite regular equipment servicing programme, in 188 patients there was a technical problem with the equipment which was solved in the patient's home in 64% or required replacement / parts in 22%. Of the 25 calls in which no fault was found, 13 patients were unwell at home or required hospital admission, 2 patients died within 1 month of identification of no fault. No patient was admitted as a result of technical failure of equipment. Conclusion: There is a significant workload associated with supporting HV patients. Patients / carers all received standard competency training before discharge but other calls may be reduced by a more flexible problem-solving approach. Importantly, reports in which no technical fault is found may indicate deteriorating health in the patient and require close follow-up.

The dynamics of the coral disease, Acropora white syndrome (AWS), was directly compared on reefs in the species-poor region of the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands (NWHI) and the species-rich region of American Samoa (AS) with results suggesting that biodiversity, which can affect the abundance of susceptible hosts, is important in influencing the impacts of coral disease outbreaks. The diversity-disease hypothesis predicts that decreased host species diversity should result in increased disease severity of specialist pathogens. We found that AWS was more prevalent and had a higher incidence within the NWHI as compared to AS. Individual Acropora colonies affected by AWS showed high mortality in both regions, but case fatality rate and disease severity was higher in the NWHI. The site within the NWHI had a monospecific stand of A. cytherea; a species that is highly susceptible to AWS. Once AWS entered the site, it spread easily amongst the abundant susceptible hosts. The site within AS contained numerous Acropora species, which differed in their apparent susceptibility to infection and disease severity, which in turn reduced disease spread. Manipulative studies showed AWS was transmissible through direct contact in three Acropora species. These results will help managers predict and respond to disease outbreaks.

The present study examined a battery of tests to evaluate unilateral spatial neglect; the tests included different tasks involving several modalities of spatial exploration mapping perceptual, motor, attentional and personal or extrapersonal space dimensions. The subjects, 121 right-brain-damaged patients with unilateral neglect, were studied in seven laboratories in four European countries. Relationships among the various tests were examined by correlations, a cluster analysis and by an analysis of individual cases. Different sensitivity was found among various tests for detecting neglect performances. Both the cluster analysis and the single case analysis clearly showed a segregation between personal and extrapersonal neglect. Analysis of the large cluster, including a variety of tests of extra personal neglect, together with the study of single cases, suggests the possibility of differentiating the various manifestations of spatial neglect which can be interpreted on the basis of the descriptions of other individual cases previously reported in the literature. Finally, the present study indicated the relative stability of neglect following the acute phase and its independence from age.

Assessing hydration status outside of laboratories can be challenging given that most hydration measures are invasive, stationary, costly, or have questionable validity. This study investigated the within-day, test-retest reliability, and minimal detectable change (MDC) of the MX3 Hydration Testing System (MX3 Diagnostics), a relatively low cost, noninvasive, and portable method to measure saliva osmolality. Seventy-five adults (44 men, 31 women; 29.6±10.8 yr, 171.1±9.2 cm, 79.1±15.4 kg) presented two saliva samples approximately 3 to 5 minutes apart. Fluid intake was avoided for at least 5 minutes prior to sample collections. For each sample collection, a researcher used the MX3 to tap the tip of a test strip to saliva on a participant's tongue. Intra-class correlation coefficients (ICCs) and MDC were calculated as measures of reliability. Means for the two measurements were 64.3±19.0 mOsm and 65.5±17.9 mOsm (mean difference of -1.2±13.0 mOsm; t = -0.806, p = 0.423). Further analysis with a two-one-sided test procedure revealed equivalence between the two SOSM measurements (p < 0.001 for upper and lower bounds). Within-day repeat measures yielded an ICC of 0.75 and an MDC at the 90% confidence level of 21.3 mOsm. With moderate-to-good reliability, the MX3 appears to be a practical choice for reliably measuring moderate-sized changes (>20 mOsm) in saliva osmolality outside of laboratory constraints.

Maintaining monoculture lawns is resource intensive and can have environmental impacts on arthropod and aquatic communities. Here we introduce the reader to some of the many native plants that establish in lawns and if left to grow can provide ecological benefits to urban landscapes. Most resources and marketing regarding these plants focus on killing them rather than on their ecological benefits. This publication introduces the audience to these species and provides information about the biology and benefits of these species, as well as resources to learn more about self-recruiting lawn species.
