1. The decay of the 21.47-MeV stretched resonance in 13C: A precise probe of the open nuclear quantum system description

Abstract

The decay of the 21.47-MeV stretched resonance in 13C, arising from p3/2→d5/2 nucleon excitation coupled to maximum spin, was investigated in a (p,p′) experiment at 135 MeV proton bombarding energy, performed at the Cyclotron Centre Bronowice (CCB) at IFJ PAN in Krakow. First experimental information on the proton and neutron decay branches from this state was obtained by using coincidence measurement of protons inelastically scattered on a 13C target and γ rays from daughter nuclei, namely, 12B (proton decay) and 12C (neutron decay). The main branches lead to the Jπ=2+, first-excited state at 0.953 MeV in 12B, and to the Jπ=1+, T=1 level at 15.110 MeV in 12C. The results were compared with predictions from the Gamow Shell Model (GSM), which was used to describe the stretched resonance in terms of its energy, width, electromagnetic transition strengths and decay pattern. A very good agreement was obtained between the measured and calculated properties of the 21.47-MeV stretched resonance in 13C, demonstrating the high-quality and precision of the GSM wave function calculations, which include coupling to the resonant and non-resonant particle continuum.

Abstract

The low-lying dipole strength in the 90,94Zr nuclei was investigated via (p,p′γ) at 80 MeV and (α,α′γ) at 130 MeV. The experiments, made at RCNP, used the magnetic spectrometer Grand Raiden for the scattered particles and the array CAGRA with HPGe detectors for the γ-decay. For 94Zr these are the first data for both reactions and for 90Zr these are the first data with (p,p′γ) and the first ones at high resolution for (α,α′γ). The comparison of the present results for the two nuclei with existing (γ,γ′) data shows that both nuclear probes produce an excitation pattern different than that of the electromagnetic probes.DWBA calculations were made using form factors deduced from transition densities, based on RPA calculations, characterized by a strong neutron component at the nuclear surface. A combined analysis of the two reactions was performed for the first time to investigate the isoscalar character of the 1− states in 90,94Zr. The (p,p′γ) cross section was calculated using values for the isoscalar electric dipole energy-weighted sum rule (E1 ISEWSR) obtained from the (α,α′γ) data. The isoscalar strength for 90Zr was found to exhaust 20 ± 2.5% of the EWSR in the energy range up to 12 MeV. In case of 94Zr, a strength of 9 ± 1.1% of the EWSR was found in the range up to 8.5 MeV.Although an overall general description was obtained in the studied energy intervals, not all proton cross sections were well reproduced using the isoscalar strength from (α,α′γ). This might suggest mixing of isoscalar and isovector components and that this mixing and the degree of collectivity are not the same for all the 1− states below the particle binding energy.

Abstract

International audience; M4 resonances in light nuclei result from the p3/2 → d5/2 stretched excitations. Their configurations should be relatively simple, which makes them good benchmarks for the theoretical calculations taking into account the role of continuum couplings. The first experimental studies aiming at tracing the decay of the M4 stretched resonance in 13C, located at 21.47 MeV, were undertaken at the Cyclotron Centre Bronowice at the Institute of Nuclear Physics Polish Academy of Sciences in Kraków, Poland (IFJ PAN). They provided information on the proton and neutron decay channels of this resonance to 12B and 12C daughter nuclei, respectively. These experimental results were then compared with the theoretical calculations based on the Gamow Shell Model approach, in terms of energy, width, and in particular, the decay pattern. Furthermore, the studies of the next cases, namely, 14N and 16O, where several M4 resonances appear at around 20 MeV, have been recently performed at CCB. The new experimental findings will serve as a testing ground for future calculations describing the heavier nuclei in this important region of the nuclear chart.

Abstract

International audience; “Stretched” states are examples of the simplest nuclear excitations in the continuum, thus offering an excellent testing ground for various theoretical approaches. The decay of the stretched single-particle state in 13C, located at 21.47 MeV, was investigated in an experiment performed recently at the Cyclotron Centre Bronowice (CCB) at IFJ PAN in Kraków. First experimental information on the proton and neutron decay channels of this resonance was obtained by employing coincidence measurement of protons inelastically scattered on the 13C target and γ rays from daughter nuclei. The new experimental findings will be used for testing predictions obtained by the Gamow Shell Model calculations.

Abstract

Excited states of 17N, 18N and 19N were investigated through the measurement of gamma rays, following their population via deep-inelastic reactions induced by an 18O beam (7 MeV/u) on a thick 181Ta target. The experimental setup comprised the AGATA+PARIS detection system, coupled to the VAMOS++ magnetic spectrometer. In the 17N nucleus, the analysis of gamma-ray transitions de-exciting two states around 4-5 MeV clearly pointed to discrepancies with the lifetime values reported in literature. Three new gamma rays were observed in 18N at the energies of 1662.3 (3) keV, 2073.4 (8) keV and 2300.9 (8) keV, and hints for other two new transitions around 1566 keV and 1720 keV were found. In addition, a new transition with energy of 2489.7 (8) keV was observed in 19N.

Abstract

International audience; Background: Superdeformed (SD) bands are suggested by theory around Ca40 and in lighter alpha-conjugate nuclei such as Mg24, Si28, and S32. Such predictions originate from a number of theoretical models including mean-field models and antisymmetrized molecular dynamics (AMD) calculations. While SD bands have been identified in Ca40 and its near neighbors, evidence of their existence in the lighter, midshell nuclei is circumstantial at best. The key evidence of superdeformation would be the observation of transitions with high B(E2) transition strengths connecting states in a rotational sequence. This is challenging information to obtain since the bands lie at a high excitation energy and competition from out-of-band decay is dominant.Purpose: The purpose of the present study is to establish a new methodology to circumvent the difficulties in identifying and quantifying in-band transitions through directly populating candidate states in the SD band in Si28 through inelastic alpha scattering, selecting such states with a spectrometer, and measuring their gamma-ray decay with a large array of high-purity germanium detectors, allowing direct access to electromagnetic transition strengths.Methods: Excited states in Si28 were populated in the Si28(α,α′) reaction using a 130-MeV He4 beam from the K140 AVF cyclotron at the Research Center for Nuclear Physics. Outgoing alpha particles were analyzed using the Grand Raiden spectrometer positioned at an angle of 9.1∘ to favor the population of states with J≈4. Coincident gamma rays were detected with the CAGRA array of 12 HPGe clover detectors augmented by a set of four large LaBr3 detectors.Results: Data analysis showed that it was possible to identify additional low-energy transitions in competition with high-energy decays from excited states in Si28 in the vicinity of 10 MeV. However, while the candidate 4+ SD state at 10.944 MeV was populated, a 1148-keV transition to the candidate 2+ SD state at 9.796 MeV was not observed, and only an upper limit for its transition strength of B(E2)<43 W.u. could be established. This contradicts AMD predictions of ≈200 W.u. for such a transition.Conclusion: The present study strongly rejects the hypothesis that the candidate set of states identified in Si28 represents an SD band, which demonstrates the potential of the methodology devised here.

Abstract

International audience; High-resolution γ-ray spectroscopy of N18 is performed with the Advanced GAmma Tracking Array, following deep-inelastic processes induced by an O18 beam on a Ta181 target. Six states are newly identified, which together with the three known excitations exhaust all negative-parity excited states expected in N18 below the neutron threshold. Spin and parities are proposed for all located states on the basis of decay branchings and comparison with large-scale shell-model calculations performed in the p-sd space, with the YSOX interaction. Of particular interest is the location of the 01− and 12− excitations, which provide strong constrains for cross-shell p-sd matrix elements based on realistic interactions and help to simultaneously reproduce the ground and first-excited states in N16 and N18, for the first time. Understanding the N18 structure may also have significant impact on neutron-capture cross-section calculations in r-process modeling including light neutron-rich nuclei.

Abstract

A novel Monte Carlo technique has been developed to determine lifetimes of excited states in the tens-to-hundreds femtoseconds range in products of low-energy heavy-ion binary reactions, with complex velocity distributions. The method is based on a detailed study of Doppler-broadened $$\gamma $$ γ -ray lineshapes. Its relevance is demonstrated in connection with the $$^{18}\text {O}(7.0\, \text {MeV/u})+\,^{181}\text {Ta}$$ 18 O ( 7.0 MeV/u ) + 181 Ta experiment, performed at GANIL with the AGATA+VAMOS+PARIS setup, to study neutron-rich O, C, N, ... nuclei. Excited states in $$^{17}\text {O}$$ 17 O and $$^{19}\text {O}$$ 19 O , with known lifetimes, are used to validate the method over the $$\sim 20{-}400\,\text {fs}$$ ∼ 20 - 400 fs lifetime-sensitivity range. Emphasis is given to the unprecedented position resolution provided by $$\gamma $$ γ -tracking arrays, which turns out to be essential for reaching the required accuracy in Doppler-shift correction. The technique is anticipated to be an important tool for lifetime investigations in exotic neutron-rich nuclei, produced with intense ISOL-type beams.

Abstract

The low-lying dipole strength in the 90,94Zr nuclei was investigated via (p,p′γ) at 80 MeV and (α,α′γ) at 130 MeV. The experiments, made at RCNP, used the magnetic spectrometer Grand Raiden for the scattered particles and the array CAGRA with HPGe detectors for the γ-decay. For 94Zr these are the first data for both reactions and for 90Zr these are the first data with (p,p′γ) and the first ones at high resolution for (α,α′γ). The comparison of the present results for the two nuclei with existing (γ,γ′) data shows that both nuclear probes produce an excitation pattern different than that of the electromagnetic probes. DWBA calculations were made using form factors deduced from transition densities, based on RPA calculations, characterized by a strong neutron component at the nuclear surface. A combined analysis of the two reactions was performed for the first time to investigate the isoscalar character of the 1− states in 90,94Zr. The (p,p′γ) cross section was calculated using values for the isoscalar electric dipole energy-weighted sum rule (E1 ISEWSR) obtained from the (α,α′γ) data. The isoscalar strength for 90Zr was found to exhaust 20 ± 2.5% of the EWSR in the energy range up to 12 MeV. In case of 94Zr, a strength of 9 ± 1.1% of the EWSR was found in the range up to 8.5 MeV. Although an overall general description was obtained in the studied energy intervals, not all proton cross sections were well reproduced using the isoscalar strength from (α,α′γ). This might suggest mixing of isoscalar and isovector components and that this mixing and the degree of collectivity are not the same for all the 1− states below the particle binding energy.

Abstract

We report on spectroscopic information and lifetime measurements of even-even neutron-rich Te isotopes. Excited states were populated in fast-neutron induced fission of U238 at the ALTO facility of IJCLab with the LICORNE neutron source and detected using the hybrid ν-ball spectrometer. We provide first results on lifetimes of the 61+ state in Te136 and the (61+), (41+), and (21+) states in Te138 and discuss the results in the context of large-scale shell-model calculations. The level schemes of Te136 and Te138 are revised in terms of lifetimes of their 21+,41+ states and updated information on the (42+) state in Te136 is presented. In addition, previously reported data on spectroscopy and lifetimes in Te134 are reexamined. This work provides new insights into the evolution of collectivity for Te isotopes with N=82,84,86.

Abstract

When a heavy atomic nucleus splits (fission), the resulting fragments are observed to emerge spinning1; this phenomenon has been a mystery in nuclear physics for over 40 years2,3. The internal generation of typically six or seven units of angular momentum in each fragment is particularly puzzling for systems that start with zero, or almost zero, spin. There are currently no experimental observations that enable decisive discrimination between the many competing theories for the mechanism that generates the angular momentum4–12. Nevertheless, the consensus is that excitation of collective vibrational modes generates the intrinsic spin before the nucleus splits (pre-scission). Here we show that there is no significant correlation between the spins of the fragment partners, which leads us to conclude that angular momentum in fission is actually generated after the nucleus splits (post-scission). We present comprehensive data showing that the average spin is strongly mass-dependent, varying in saw-tooth distributions. We observe no notable dependence of fragment spin on the mass or charge of the partner nucleus, confirming the uncorrelated post-scission nature of the spin mechanism. To explain these observations, we propose that the collective motion of nucleons in the ruptured neck of the fissioning system generates two independent torques, analogous to the snapping of an elastic band. A parameterization based on occupation of angular momentum states according to statistical theory describes the full range of experimental data well. This insight into the role of spin in nuclear fission is not only important for the fundamental understanding and theoretical description of fission, but also has consequences for the γ-ray heating problem in nuclear reactors13,14, for the study of the structure of neutron-rich isotopes15,16, and for the synthesis and stability of super-heavy elements17,18. γ-ray spectroscopy experiments on the origin of spin in the products of nuclear fission of spin-zero nuclei suggest that the fission fragments acquire their spin after scission, rather than before.

Abstract

International audience; We report on spectroscopic information and lifetime measurements in the neutron-rich I135,137,139 isotopes. This is the first lifetime data on iodine isotopes beyond N=82. Excited states were populated in fast neutron-induced fission of U238 at the ALTO facility of IJCLab with the LICORNE neutron source and detected using the hybrid ν-ball spectrometer. The level schemes of the I135,137,139 isotopes are revised in terms of excited states with up to maximum spin-parity of (33/2+), populated for the first time in fast neutron-induced fission. We provide first results on the lifetimes of the (9/21+) and (13/21+) states in I137 and I139, and the (17/21+) state in I137. In addition, we give upper lifetime limits for the (11/21+) states in I135−139, the (15/21+) state in I137, the (17/21+) state in I139, and reexamine the (29/21+) state in I137. The isomeric data in I135 are reinvestigated, such as the previously known (15/21+) and (23/21−) isomers with T1/2 of 1.64(14) and 4.6(7) ns, respectively, as obtained in this work. The new spectroscopic information is compared to that from spontaneous or thermal-neutron induced fission and discussed in the context of large scale shell-model (LSSM) calculations for the region beyond Sn132, indicating the behavior of collectivity for the three valence-proton iodine chain with N=82,84,86.

Abstract

Prompt and delayed γ -ray spectroscopy of the neutron-rich 94 Kr was performed, as part of the fission campaign at the ALTO facility of the IPN Orsay, using the fast-neutron-induced fission reaction 238 U ( n , f ) in combination with the ν -Ball array, a novel hybrid γ spectrometer for energy and lifetime measurements. Several new yrast and nonyrast transitions were observed for the first time, extending the previously known level scheme. Additionally, we report on the observation of a new short-lived isomer at 3444 keV with a half-life of 32(3) ns. The analysis of the Nilsson orbitals obtained from Gogny cranked Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov calculations suggests a ( 9 − ) spin and an oblate deformation for this isomer corresponding to a two-quasineutron state, indicating an isomeric structure very similar to that of the neighboring isotones 96 Sr and 92 Se

Abstract

International audience; Prompt $\gamma $-ray spectra emitted in fast-neutron induced fission of $^{239}$Pu have been recently measured by using the LICORNE directional neutron source at E$_n$ = 1.8 MeV. The results are used in parallel with the measurements of fast-neutron induced fission of $^{238}$U and spontaneous fission of $^{252}$Cf to assess the potential of such reactions and observables, in contributing to the understanding of fission. The $\gamma $-ray spectra were measured and analyzed under similar conditions, allowing a consistent and robust comparison between the three systems. They are further compared to Monte–Carlo simulations based on two widely-used semi-empirical codes, FREYA and GEF. Differences in the low and high energy portions of the spectrum are interpreted based on simple arguments involving nuclear structure and evaporation effects. The significance and potential of experimental campaigns of this kind, as well as current limitations, are highlighted, together with straightforward but mandatory extensions.

Abstract

Summary Roots of Solanum lycopersicum L. were collected in growing season of year 2015, on the island of Santiago in Cape Verde. Morphological, morphometric and molecular (18S rDNA and 28S rDNA) studies revealed the presence of Pratylenchus brachyurus and P. delattrei in root systems and root zones of tomato plants. To our knowledge, this is the first record of the occurrence of these nematode species in Cape Verde.

Abstract

International audience; Excited states in the neutron-rich 85Se nucleus have been studied using for the first time a fast neutron-induced fission of 232Th. The experiment was performed at the ALTO facility of the IPN Orsay. Coupling of the LICORNE directional neutron source with the ν-ball high-resolution γ-ray spectrometer provided unique access to high-spin states in neutron-rich fission fragments from the 232Th(n, f) reaction. A preliminary level scheme of 85Se was established by the analysis of prompt γ–γ–γ coincidences. Identification of the all known yrast states in 85Se is the first step towards studies of more neutron-rich Se isotopes.

Abstract

International audience; For a few years, the medical cyclotron Proteus C-235 at the Cyclotron Centre Bronowice in Kraków, Poland has been regularly used for nuclear structure experiments. One of the ongoing studies is focused on the γ decay of collective states populated in (p, p0γ) reactions. In a recent experiment, γ decays of excited states in the energy region of the Pygmy Dipole States in 208Pb have been observed. Good efficiency and energy resolution provided by the PARIS clusters and LaBr3:Ce scintillators facilitate a comparison of the obtained energy spectra with previous measurements of pygmy states in this nucleus.

Abstract

Zakopane Conference on Nuclear Physics - Extremes of the Nuclear Landscape -- AUG 26-SEP 02, 2018 -- Zakopane, POLAND, WOS: 000463866500052, Recent ab initio calculations pointed out the importance of the three-body terms of the nuclear interaction, in the description of the structure of n-rich systems. The state lifetimes in light n-rich carbon and oxygen nuclei have been predicted to be sensitive to the three-body terms and, in this context, an experiment, aiming at the measurement of these lifetimes, was performed in GANIL in July 2017 with the AGATA and PARIS arrays coupled to the VAMOS++ magnetic spectrometer. Abstract

International audience; A very first experiment in the field of nuclear structure at the Cyclotron Centre Bronowice (CCB) facility in Kraków, Poland has been performed recently. The medical cyclotron IBA Proteus C-235 located at CCB produces proton beams in the energy range of 70–230 MeV, that can be used for experimental purposes as well. In the reported measurement, the energy of scattered protons at the incident beam energy of 85 MeV and emitted γ rays from the excited 208Pb target were measured in coincidence. During the experiment excitations in the energy region of the Giant Quadrupole and Dipole Resonances, as well as the Pygmy Dipole States were observed. By applying different conditions on the data, spectra corresponding to γ decays of excited states to selected low-lying levels in 208Pb were obtained, allowing a look into the Brink–Axel hypothesis.

Abstract

International audience; An experiment aiming at measuring lifetimes of the second 2+ excited states in neutron-rich C and O isotopes was recently performed at the GANIL laboratory, in France. In these nuclei, recent ab initio calculations provide a detailed description of the nuclear excited states, predicting a strong sensitivity of the electromagnetic transition probabilities to the details of the nucleon–nucleon interactions, especially in connection with the role played by the three-body (NNN) forces. Thus, the measurement of 2 + states lifetimes in this region will be a stringent test of the importance of including the NNN forces in describing the electromagnetic properties of selected nuclear states. This contribution reports on the status of the experimental analysis for the case of lifetimes in 20O.

Abstract

Prompt-fission $\ensuremath{\gamma}$-ray spectra (PFGS) have been measured for the $^{238}\mathrm{U}(n,f$) reaction using fast neutrons produced by the LICORNE directional neutron source. Fission events were detected with an ionization chamber containing actinide samples placed in the neutron beam, and the coincident prompt-fission $\ensuremath{\gamma}$ rays were measured using a number of ${\mathrm{LaBr}}_{3}$ scintillation detectors and a cluster of nine phoswich detectors from the PARIS array. Prompt-fission $\ensuremath{\gamma}$ rays (PFGs) were discriminated from prompt-fission neutrons using the time-of-flight technique over distances of around 35 cm. PFG emission spectra were measured at two incident neutron energies of 1.9 and 4.8 MeV for $^{238}\mathrm{U}(n,f$) and also for $^{252}\mathrm{Cf}(sf$) as a reference. Spectral characteristics of PFG emission, such as mean $\ensuremath{\gamma}$ multiplicity and average total $\ensuremath{\gamma}$-ray energy per fission, as well as the average $\ensuremath{\gamma}$-ray energy, were extracted. The sensitivity of these results to the width of the time window and the type of spectral unfolding procedure used to correct for the detector responses was studied. Iteration methods were found to be more stable in low-statistics data sets. The measured values at ${E}_{n}=1.9\phantom{\rule{4.pt}{0ex}}\text{MeV}$ were found to be the mean $\ensuremath{\gamma}$ multiplicity ${\overline{M}}_{\ensuremath{\gamma}}=6.54\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.19$, total released energy per fission ${E}_{\ensuremath{\gamma},\mathrm{tot}}=5.25\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.20$ MeV, and the average $\ensuremath{\gamma}$-ray energy ${\ensuremath{\epsilon}}_{\ensuremath{\gamma}}=0.80\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.04$ MeV. Under similar conditions, the values at ${E}_{n}=4.8\phantom{\rule{4.pt}{0ex}}\text{MeV}$ were measured to be ${\overline{M}}_{\ensuremath{\gamma}}=7.31\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.46, {E}_{\ensuremath{\gamma},\mathrm{tot}}=6.18\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.65$ MeV, and ${\ensuremath{\epsilon}}_{\ensuremath{\gamma}}=0.84\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.11$ MeV.

Abstract

A Coulomb-excitation experiment to study electromagnetic properties of Ca42 was performed using a 170-MeV calcium beam from the TANDEM XPU facility at INFN Laboratori Nazionali di Legnaro. γ rays from excited states in Ca42 were measured with the AGATA spectrometer. The magnitudes and relative signs of ten E2 matrix elements coupling six low-lying states in Ca42, including the diagonal E2 matrix elements of 21+ and 22+ states, were determined using the least-squares code gosia. The obtained set of reduced E2 matrix elements was analyzed using the quadrupole sum rule method and yielded overall quadrupole deformation for 01,2+ and 21,2+ states, as well as triaxiality for 01,2+ states, establishing the coexistence of a weakly deformed ground-state band and highly deformed slightly triaxial sideband in Ca42. The experimental results were compared with the state-of-the-art large-scale shell-model and beyond-mean-field calculations, which reproduce well the general picture of shape coexistence in Ca42.

Abstract

Prompt fission gamma-ray spectra (PFGS) have been measured for the 239Pu(n,f) reaction using fast neutrons at Ēn=1.81 MeV produced by the LICORNE directional neutron source. The setup makes use of LaBr3 scintillation detectors and PARIS phoswich detectors to measure the emitted prompt fission gamma rays (PFG). The mean multiplicity, average total energy release per fission and average energy of photons are extracted from the unfolded PFGS. These new measurements provide complementary information to other recent work on thermal neutron induced fission of 239Pu and spontaneous fission of 252Cf.

Abstract

International audience; We performed experiments to study the low-energy part of the E1 response (Pygmy Dipole Resonance) in $^{90,94}$Zr nuclei, by measuring the (p,p’γ) and (α,α’γ) inelastic scattering reactions at energies Ebeam,p = 80 MeV and Ebeam,α = 130 MeV respectively. The inelastically scattered particles were measured by employing the high-resolution spectrometer Grand Raiden. The gamma-rays emitted following the de-excitation of the Zr target nuclei were detected using both the clover type HPGe detectors of the CAGRA array and the large volume LaBr3:Ce scintillation detectors from the HECTOR+ array. Some preliminary results are presented here.

Abstract

International audience; A Coulomb excitation experiment to study electromagnetic properties of 45Sc was performed at the Heavy Ion Laboratory, University of Warsaw, using a 70 MeV 32S beam. Measured γ-ray intensities together with existing spectroscopic data were used to extract a set of matrix elements between the populated states. Upper limit on B(E3;7/2 − → 5/2 +) is given.

Abstract

Summary Roots of Solanum lycopersicum L. were collected in growing season of year 2015, on the island of Santiago in Cape Verde. Morphological, morphometric and molecular (18S rDNA and 28S rDNA) studies revealed the presence of Pratylenchus brachyurus and P. delattrei in root systems and root zones of tomato plants. To our knowledge, this is the first record of the occurrence of these nematode species in Cape Verde.

Abstract

The isovector giant dipole resonance (IVGDR) $\ensuremath{\gamma}$ decay was measured in the compound nuclei $^{80}\mathrm{Zr}$ and $^{81}\mathrm{Rb}$ at an excitation energy of ${E}^{*}=54$ MeV. The fusion reaction $^{40}\mathrm{Ca}+^{40}\mathrm{Ca}$ at ${E}_{\mathrm{beam}}=136$ MeV was used to form the compound nucleus $^{80}\mathrm{Zr}$, while the reaction $^{37}\mathrm{Cl}+^{44}\mathrm{Ca}$ at ${E}_{\mathrm{beam}}=95$ MeV was used to form the compound nucleus $^{81}\mathrm{Rb}$ at the same excitation energy. The IVGDR parameters extracted from the analysis were compared with the ones found at higher excitation energy (${E}^{*}=83$ MeV). The comparison allows one to observe two different nuclear mechanisms: (i) the IVGDR intrinsic width remains constant with the excitation energy in the nucleus $^{81}\mathrm{Rb}$; (ii) the isospin-violating spreading width (i.e., Coulomb spreading width) remains constant with the excitation energy in the nucleus $^{80}\mathrm{Zr}$. The experimental setup used for the $\ensuremath{\gamma}$-ray detection was composed by the AGATA demonstrator array coupled to the large-volume ${\mathrm{LaBr}}_{3}$:Ce detectors of the ${\mathrm{HECTOR}}^{+}$ array.

Abstract

© 2019 Jagellonian University. All Rights Reserved. The breaking of isospin symmetry caused by the Coulomb interaction can be measured by the study of E1 γ decay. The Isovector Giant Dipole Resonance (IVGDR) was measured in 60 Zn and 62 Zn at two different excitation energies E ∗ = 47 MeV and E ∗ = 58 MeV with the goal of deducing the isospin mixing term. A fusion–evaporation reaction, with a beam of 32 S and a target of 28 Si, was used to produce 60 Zn. We also produced the compound nucleus 62 Zn using the reaction 32 S + 30 Si. This last reaction is required because, for the produced nucleus, the statistical model analysis is much less sensitive to the isospin mixing, and this allows to extract the GDR parameters and use them for isospin mixing sensitive reaction populating neighboring nucleus with N = Z. The experimental setup was composed of GALILEO array (germanium detectors) coupled to the large-volume LaBr 3 :Ce detectors for the γ-rays measuring and by two ancillary arrays, EUCLIDES and the Neutron Wall for the detection of particles and neutrons, respectively. Abstract

K. Hadyńska-Kl¸ek et al. ; 7 pags., 3 figs., 2 tabs., Shape parameters of a weakly deformed ground-state band and highly deformed slightly triaxial sideband in Ca42 were determined from E2 matrix elements measured in the first low-energy Coulomb excitation experiment performed with AGATA. The picture of two coexisting structures is well reproduced by new state-of-the-art large-scale shell model and beyond-mean-field calculations. Experimental evidence for superdeformation of the band built on 02+ has been obtained and the role of triaxiality in the A∼40 mass region is discussed. Abstract

A study of fusion-evaporation and (partly) fusion-fission channels for the $^{88}$Mo compound nucleus, produced at different excitation energies in the reaction $^{48}$Ti + $^{40}$Ca at 300, 450 and 600 MeV beam energies, is presented. Fusion-evaporation and fusion-fission cross sections have been extracted and compared with the existing systematics. Experimental data concerning light charged particles have been compared with the prediction of the statistical model in its implementation in the Gemini++ code, well suited even for high spin systems, in order to tune the main model parameters in a mass region not abundantly covered by exclusive experimental data. Multiplicities for light charged particles emitted in fusion evaporation events are also presented. Some discrepancies with respect to the prediction of the statistical model have been found for forward emitted $\alpha$-particles; they may be due both to pre-equilibrium emission and to reaction channels (such as Deep Inelastic Collisions, QuasiFission/QuasiFusion) different from the compound nucleus formation.

Abstract

Meloidogyne incognita is a serious pest of several economically important plants in tropical and subtropical regions. One such plant, tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.), is one of the most widely grown vegetables on irrigated land in Cape Verde. In June 2015, tomato plants (cv. Savana) with symptoms of stunting, leaf wilting and poor fruiting, were recorded in a field in Achada Colaco, Santiago Island (15°06'35.3"N, 23°31'31.9"W). Roots of these plants were galled indicating the occurrence of root-knot nematodes. Detected nematodes were isolated and dissected from roots using standard procedures. Morphological and genetic studies revealed the presence of M. incognita. Female (n = 47) perineal patterns showed a high and squared dorsal arch composed of smooth to wavy striae; distinct lateral lines were absent. Stylet had cone curved dorsally, knobs broadly elongated and set off from the shaft. Males’ heads possessed a high and wide head cap with centrally concave labial disc. Abstract

High-energy giant dipole resonance (GDR) γ rays were measured following the decay of the hot, rotating compound nucleus of 88Mo, produced at excitation energies of 124 and 261 MeV. The reaction 48Ti+ 40Ca at 300 and 600 MeV bombarding energies has been used. The data were analyzed using the statistical modelMonte Carlo code GEMINI++. It allowed extracting the giant dipole resonance parameters by fitting the high-energy γ -ray spectra. The extracted GDR widths were compared with the available data at lower excitation energy and with theoretical predictions based on (i) The Lublin-Strasbourg drop macroscopic model, supplemented with thermal shape fluctuations analysis, and (ii) The phonon damping model. The theoretical predictions were convolutedwith the population matrices of evaporated nuclei from the statistical model GEMINI++. Also a comparison with the results of a phenomenological expression based on the existing systematics, mainly for lower temperature data, is presented and discussed. A possible onset of a saturation of the GDR width was observed around T = 3 MeV.

Abstract

International audience; The first cluster of the constructed PARIS calorimeter was assembled and tested atthe ELBE facility at HZDR, Dresden, Germany. The experiment was aimed at the evaluationof the performance of each detector separately as well as the whole PARIS cluster with discrete$\gamma$-ray energies seen by the PARIS ranging up to 8.9 MeV. As the detectors use phoswichconfiguration, with 2'' x 2'' x 2'' LaBr3(Ce) crystal coupled to 2'' x 2'' x 6'' NaI(Tl) one, greatcare must be taken during the data analysis process to obtain the best possible values for energyresolution. Two algorithms for data transformation from matrices created with slow vs fastpulse shaping to energy spectra were tested from which one was chosen for further analysis. Analgorithm for adding back energies of $\gamma$-rays scattered inside the cluster was prepared, as well.Energy resolution for $\gamma$-rays in 2–8 MeV range was estimated and is presented in this paper.

42. A morphometric comparative study of the medial geniculate body of the rabbit and the fox

Abstract

Unbiased stereological methods were used to morphometrically examine and compare the medial geniculate body (MGB) of two species from different mammalian orders. The MGB had a similar nuclear pattern, and it was parcelled into three major cytoarchitectural areas: the dorsal nucleus (MGd), the ventral nucleus (MGv) and the medial nucleus (MGm). The MGd was predominant in the fox, where it contributed nearly 50% to the total MGB volume, while in the rabbit, the MGv was insignificantly larger than the MGd. In both species, the percentage contribution of the MGm was the lowest. The MGd in the fox was also characterized by twice as many neurons per mm(3) as in the rabbit, whereas a reverse proportion was observed in the MGm, although the numerical density in the MGv was very similar in both species. The total number of MGB neurons in the fox was over twice higher than that in the rabbit. The variability in the percentage contribution of the MGd, MGv and MGm cells to the total neuronal population of the MGB was different in both mammals. In the rabbit, there was a larger contribution from the MGv and MGm, while in the fox, the MGd was predominant. These data demonstrate that the main areas of the MGB complex differ in terms of the morphometric characteristics in both species. Our results also show that the negative correlation between the volume and numerical density in the sensory centres of the brain might not be as distinct as in the non-sensory brain structures.

Abstract

The distribution and morphology of neurons containing cocaine- and amphetamine-regulated transcript (CART) was investigated in the pig amygdala. CART- immunoreactive (CART-IR) cell bodies were rarely observed in the pig amygdala and most often they were present in the posterior (small-celled) parts of the basolateral and basomedial nuclei. In all other subdivisions only a small number of randomly scattered pericarya were present. In every region studied the CART-IR neurons formed a heterogeneous population consisting mostly of small, rounded or slightly elongated cell bodies, with a few poorly branched, smooth dendrites. In general, the morphological features of these cells clearly resembled non-pyramidal Golgi type II interneurons. Some randomly scattered CART-IR cell bodies were significantly larger and they demonstrated features of pyramidal-like Golgi type I projecting neurons. The highest densities of CART-IR fibres were evident within the central and medial nuclei. Moderate to high expression was found within the large-celled part of the basolateral nucleus and moderate to low levels in the lateral, basomedial and cortical nuclei. The routine double-labelling studies with antisera directed against CART and somatostatin (SOM), or neuropeptide Y (NPY), or cholecystokinin (CCK), or vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP), or substance P (SP) demonstrated that, in general, these peptides do not co-exist in the CART-IR neurons. However, small subpopulations of the CART-IR fibres contained SOM, CCK, VIP or SP together.

44. A morphometric study of the preoptic area of the guinea pig

Abstract

The aim of the study was to provide the topography and morphometric characteristics of the preoptic area (POA) of the guinea pig. The study was carried out on the brains of sexually mature guinea pigs of both sexes. A uniform procedure was followed in the study of the paraffin-embedded brain tissue blocks of males and females. The blocks were cut in the coronal plane into 50 mm sections and stained according to the Nissl method. The guinea pig POA consists of four parts: the medial preoptic area (MPA), lateral preoptic area (LPA), periventricular preoptic nucleus (PPN), and median preoptic nucleus (MPN). The topography and general structure of POA parts are similar in males and females. However, the PPNa cells of females are more intensely stained and are more densely packed than the PPNa cells of males. For morphometric analysis, the MPA and LPA as well as PPN and MPN were considered respectively as uniform structures, namely MPA-LPA and PPN-MPN. The statistical analysis showed that the volume of the PPN-MPN was larger in males than in females, whereas the MPA-LPA volume did not differ between the sexes. Moreover, the numerical density and the total number of neurons were statistically larger in males than in females in both the MPA-LPA and PPN-MPN. The parameters describing POA neurons were larger for MPA-LPA neurons in comparison with the PPN-MPN neurons. However, in this respect no sex differences were observed in both studied complexes.

Abstract

The lateral geniculate body (LGN) was morphometrically examined and compared in representatives of four mammalian orders (Insectivora, Rodentia, Lagomorpha, and Carnivora). In each studied species, the lateral geniculate body was divided into two distinct parts: the dorsal nucleus (LGNd) and the ventral nucleus (LGNv). The lateral geniculate body of the common shrew and the bank vole are very similar in appearance and nuclear pattern. The dorsal and ventral nuclei of these two species also have the most similar statistical characteristics. The lateral geniculate body of the fox has the most complicated morphology and multilayered structure. A significant disproportion was observed between the sizes of both geniculate nuclei in the fox, where the dorsal nucleus definitely surpassed the ventral nucleus in terms of volume. With the exception of the fox, the neuronal density of the LGN nuclei was negatively correlated with the volumes of the LGN. The mean neuronal size of the LGNd and LGNv, which was the resultant of the length, width, area, and circumference of the soma, grew correlatively to the volumes of these nuclei. In all examined species, somas of the LGNd neurons are distinctly larger and have more similar shapes than the LGNv perikarya. In addition, the numerical density of neurons in the ventral nucleus is significantly higher than in the dorsal nucleus. All these morphometric parameters clearly differentiate the LGNd from the LGNv.

The studies were carried out on 12 brains derived from adult representatives of two mammalian orders, Insectivora and Rodentia. The neostriatum was compared in the common shrew (Sorex araneus) and bank vole (Clethrionomys glareolus). Three main types of striatal neuron were distinguished in the common shrew and five types of neurons in the bank vole. The fifth type of bank vole neurons was additionally divided into two subtypes with respect to dendritic pattern.

Abstract

Volumetric measurements of the individual nuclei in the amygdala (CA) of the rabbit reveal poor development of the basolateral (BL) and lateral olfactory tract (NLOT) and medial (ME) nuclei. On the other hand, the volumes of the lateral (LA), basomedial (BM), central (CE) and cortical (CO) nuclei are remarkable in this species. A comparison of the densities of neurons in the individual nuclei with the mean numerical density of cells in the rabbit CA indicates that the densities of neurons in LA, BL and BM are significantly lower than the mean (p0.05), whereas in CE, CO, ME and NLOT these values are significantly higher than the mean (p0.05). It should be noted, however, that of all the nuclei studied those in CE show the greatest similarity in density to CA as a whole. To some extent a similar division of the rabbit CA may be made using the size parameters of the amygdaloid neurons as a marker. The large neurons populate less densely organised CA areas such as LA, BL and BM, whereas the small cells create ME and NLOT, where the neurons are densely arranged. The CE and CO occupy intermediate positions, with the neurons similar in size to the mean for the total rabbit CA. These morphometric data from CA in the rabbit, when compared with the similar data for the common shrew and guinea pig (see our previous papers), lead to the conclusion that the amygdalae in all three species are very similar with respect to the distribution of neurons in relation to density and size and that, when volumetric measurements are taken into account, CA in the rabbit is much more similar to that of the guinea pig than that of the common shrew.

The topography and neuronal structure of the dorsal nucleus of the lateral geniculate body (GLd) of the common shrew and the bank vole are similar. The lateral geniculate body of both the species examined has a homogeneous structure and no observable cytoarchitectonic lamination. On the basis of the shape of the dendritic arbours as well as the pattern of dendritic arborisations the following two types of neurons were distinguished. Type I "bushy" neurons that have multipolar or round perikarya (common shrew perikarya 9-12 microm, bank vole perikarya 10-13 microm), with 4-6 short thick dendritic trunks that subdivide into many bush-like branches. The dendritic trunks are smooth, in contrast to the distal branches, which are covered with numerous spine-like protrusions of different lengths and forms. An axon emerges from the soma, sometimes very close to one of the primary dendrites. The type I neurons are typically projection cells that send their axons to the primary visual cortex. These neurons predominate in the GLd of both species. Type II neurons, which have an elongated soma with primary dendrites arising from opposite poles of the perikaryon (common shrew perikarya 8-10 microm, bank vole perikarya 9-11 microm). The dendritic arbours of these cells are less extensive and their dendrites have fewer spines than those of the type I neurons. Axons were seldom observed. The type II neurons are presumably interneurons and are definitely less numerous than the type I neurons.

The present studies were carried out on the brains of the adult mole and rabbit. The preparations were made by means of the Golgi technique and the Nissl method. Two types of neurons were distinguished in the preoptic area (POA) of both species: bipolar and multipolar. The bipolar neurons have oval, fusiform or round perikarya and two dendritic trunks arising from the opposite poles of the cell body. The dendrites bifurcate once or twice. The dendritic branches have swellings, single spine-like and filiform processes. The multipolar neurons usually have triangular and quadrangular perikarya and from 3 to 5 dendritic trunks. The dendrites of the mole neurons branch sparsely, whereas the dendrites of the rabbit neurons display 2 or 3 divisions. On the dendritic branches varicosities and different protuberances were observed. The general morphology of the bipolar and multipolar neurons is similar in the mammals studied, although the neurons of the rabbit POA display a more complicated structure. Their dendritic branches show more divisions and possess more swellings and different processes than the dendrites of the neurons of the mole POA. Furthermore, of the multipolar neurons only the dendrites in POA of the rabbit were observed to have a rosary-like beaded appearance.

The studies were carried out on the claustrum of 8 adult rabbits. Four types of neurons were distinguished: 1. Multipolar neurons, which have dendritic trunks either with conus (multipolar polygonal perikarya) or without conus (multipolar rounded perikarya). Both subdivisions of the multipolar neurons have 3-6 dendritic trunks. Only some branches of these trunks have spines. An axon emerges mainly from the cell body, rarely from the initial part of the dendritic trunk. 2. Bipolar neurons with fusiform or rounded perikarya; they have two dendrites covered with spines. An axon originates directly from the cell body or from one of the dendritic trunks. 3. Triangular neurons, which have three dendritic branches with spines. An axon emerges directly from the soma, often near the primary dendritic trunk. 4. Pear-shaped neurons with one or two dendritic trunks arise from one pole of the cell body and with an axon that originates from the opposite side of the perikaryon. The dendrites are covered with spines.
