We present recent results on the structure of the one-valence-particle $^{41}$Ca and $^{49}$Ca, and one-valence-hole $^{47}$Ca, nuclei. The isotopes of interest were populated via the cold-neutron capture reactions $^{40}$Ca(n,$\gamma$), $^{48}$Ca(n,$\gamma$) and $^{46}$Ca(n,$\gamma$), respectively. The experiments were performed at the Institut Laue-Langevin, within the EXILL campaign, which employed a large array of HPGe detectors. The $\gamma$ decay and level schemes of these nuclei were investigated by $\gamma$-ray coincidence relationships, leading to the identification of 41, 10, and 6 new transitions in $^{41}$Ca, $^{47}$Ca, and $^{49}$Ca, respectively. Branching ratios and intensities were extracted for the $\gamma$ decay from each state, and $\gamma$-ray angular correlations were performed to establish a number of transition multipolarities and mixing ratios, thus helping in the spin assignment of the states. The experimental findings are discussed along with microscopic, self-consistent beyond-mean-field calculations performed with the Hybrid Configuration Mixing model, based on a Skyrme SkX Hamiltonian. The latter suggests that a fraction of the low-spin states of the $^{41}$Ca, $^{49}$Ca, and $^{47}$Ca nuclei is characterized by the coexistence of either 2p-1h and 1p-2h excitations, or couplings between single-particle/hole degrees of freedom and collective vibrations (phonons) of the doubly-magic "core".

The transitional nuclei $^{134}$Ba and $^{133}$Ba are investigated after multinucleon transfer employing the high-resolution Advanced GAmma Tracking Array coupled to the magnetic spectrometer PRISMA at the Laboratori Nazionali di Legnaro, Italy, and after fusion-evaporation reaction at the FN tandem accelerator of the University of Cologne, Germany. The Jπ=19/2+ state at 1942 keV in $^{133}$Ba is identified as an isomer with a half-life of 66.6(20)ns corresponding to a B(E1) value of 7.7(4)×10−6e2fm2 for the Jπ=19/2+ to Jπ=19/2− transition. The level scheme of $^{134}$Ba above the Jπ=10+ isomer is extended to approximately 6 MeV. A pronounced backbending is observed at ℏω=0.38 MeV along the positive-parity yrast band. The results are compared to the high-spin systematics of the Z=56 isotopes. Large-scale shell-model calculations employing the GCN50:82, SN100PN, SNV, PQM130, Realistic SM, and EPQQM interactions reproduce the experimental findings and elucidate the structure of the high-spin states. The shell-model calculations employing the GCN50:82 and PQM130 interactions reproduce alignment properties and provide detailed insight into the microscopic origin of this phenomenon in transitional $^{134}$Ba.

The gamma-ray decay of excited states of the one-valence-proton nucleus Sb-133 has been studied using cold-neutron induced fission of U-235 and Pu-241 targets, during the EXILL campaign at the ILL reactor in Grenoble. By using a highly efficient HPGe array, coincidences between gamma-rays prompt with the fission event and those delayed up to several tens of microseconds were investigated, allowing to observe, for the first time, high-spin excited states above the 16.6 mu s isomer. Lifetimes analysis, performed by fast-timing techniques with LaBr3(Ce) scintillators, revealed a difference of almost two orders of magnitude in B(M1) strength for transitions between positive-parity medium-spin yrast states. The data are interpreted by a newly developed microscopic model which takes into account couplings between core excitations (both collective and non-collective) of the doubly magic nucleus Sn-132 and the valence proton, using Skyrme effective interaction in a consistent way. The high-spin structures of 136Ba and 137Ba are investigated after multinucleon-transfer (MNT) and fusion-evaporation reactions. 136Ba is populated in a 136Xe+238U MNT reaction employing the high-resolution Advanced GAmma Tracking Array (AGATA) coupled to the magnetic spectrometer PRISMA at the Laboratori Nazionali di Legnaro, Italy, and in two 9Be + 130Te fusion-evaporation reactions using the High-efficiency Observatory for -Ray Unique Spectroscopy (HORUS) at the FN tandem accelerator of the University of Cologne, Germany. Furthermore, both isotopes are populated in an elusive reaction channel in the 11B+130Te fusion-evaporation reaction utilizing the HORUS -ray array. The level scheme above the J� = 10+ isomer in 136Ba is revised and extended up to an excitation energy of approx. 5.5 MeV. From the results of angular-correlation measurements, the Ex = 3707- and Ex = 4920-keV states are identified as the bandheads of positive- and negative-parity cascades. While the high-spin regimes of both 132Te and 134Xe are characterized by high-energy 12+ ! 10+ transitions, the 136Ba E2 ground-state band is interrupted by negativeparity states only a few hundred keV above the J� = 10+ isomer. Furthermore, spins are established for several hitherto unassigned high-spin states in 137Ba. The new results close a gap along the highspin structure of N < 82 Ba isotopes. Experimental results are compared to large-scale shell-model calculations employing the GCN50:82, Realistic SM, PQM130 and SN100PN interactions. The calculations suggest that the bandheads of the positive-parity bands in both isotopes are predominantly of proton character.

Detailed information on isomeric states in A ≈ 135 nuclei is exploited to benchmark shell-model calculations in the region northwest of doubly-magic nucleus 132Sn. The N = 79 isotones 133Xe and 135Ba are studied after multinucleon transfer (MNT) in the 136Xe + 208Pb reaction employing the high-resolution Advanced GAmma Tracking Array (AGATA) coupled to the magnetic spectrometer PRISMA at the Laboratori Nazionali di Legnaro, Italy and in a pulsed-beam experiment at the FN tandem accelerator of the University of Cologne, Germany utilizing a 9Be+130Te fusion-evaporation reaction at a beam energy of 40 MeV. Isomeric states are identified via delayed γ-ray spectroscopy. Hitherto tentative excitation energy, spin, and parity assignments of the 2107-keV Jπ = 23/2+ isomer in 133Xe are confirmed and a half-life of T1/2 = 8.64(13) ms is measured. The 2388-keV state in 135Ba is identified as a Jπ = 23/2+ isomer with a half-life of 1.06(4) ms. The new results show a smooth onset of isomeric Jπ = 23/2+ states along the N = 79 isotones and close a gap in the high-spin systematics towards the recently investigated Jπ = 23/2+ isomer in 139Nd. The resulting systematics of M2 reduced transition probabilities is discussed within the framework of the nuclear shell model. Latest large-scale shell-model calculations employing the SN100PN, GCN50:82, SN100-KTH, and a realistic effective interaction reproduce the experimental findings generally well and give insight into the structure of the isomers.

The transitional nucleus 131Xe is investigated after multinucleon transfer (MNT) in the 136Xe+208Pb and 136Xe+238U reactions employing the high-resolution Advanced GAmma Tracking Array (AGATA) coupled to the magnetic spectrometer PRISMA at the Laboratori Nazionali di Legnaro, Italy and as an elusive reaction product in the fusion-evaporation reaction 124Sn(11B,p3n) 131Xe employing the HORUS γ-ray array coupled to a double-sided silicon strip detector (DSSSD) at the University of Cologne, Germany. The level scheme of 131Xe is extended to 5 MeV. A pronounced backbending is observed at ~ω ≈ 0.4 MeV along the negative-parity one-quasiparticle νh11/2(α = −1/2) band. The results are compared to the high-spin systematics of the Z = 54 isotopes and the N = 77 isotones. Large-scale shell-model calculations (LSSM) employing the PQM130, SN100PN, GCN50:82, SN100-KTH and a realistic effective interaction reproduce the experimental findings and provide guidance to elucidate the structure of the high-spin states. Further calculations in 129−132Xe provide insight into the changing nuclear structure along the Xe chain towards the N = 82 shell closure. Proton occupancy in the π 0h11/2 orbital is found to be decisive for the description of the observed backbending phenomenon.

Cross sections and corresponding momentum distributions have been measured for the first time at zero degrees for the exotic nuclei obtained from a beam of 18O at 8.5 MeV/A impinging on a 1 mg/cm2 238U target. Sizable cross sections were found for the production of exotic species arising from the neutron transfer and proton removal from the projectile. Comparisons of experimental results with calculations based on deep-inelastic reaction models, taking into account the particle evaporation process, indicate that zero degree is a scattering angle at which the differential reaction cross section for production of exotic nuclei is at its maximum. This result is important in view of the new generation of zero degrees spectrometers under construction, such as the S3 separator at GANIL, for example. Both nuclei are populated (i) in Xe136+Pb208 MNT reactions employing the high-resolution Advanced GAmma Tracking Array (AGATA) coupled to the magnetic spectrometer PRISMA, (ii) in the Xe136+Pt198 MNT reaction employing the GAMMASPHERE spectrometer in combination with the gas-detector array CHICO, and (iii) as an evaporation residue after a Te130(α,xn)Xe134-xn fusion-evaporation reaction employing the HORUS γ-ray array at the University of Cologne. The high-spin level schemes are considerably extended above the Jπ=(7-) and (10+) isomers in Xe132 and above the 11/2- isomer in Xe133. The results are compared to the high-spin systematics of the Z=54 as well as the N=78 and N=79 chains. Furthermore, evidence is found for a long-lived (T1/2â‰1μs) isomer in Xe133 which closes a gap along the N=79 isotones. Shell-model calculations employing the SN100PN and PQM130 effective interactions reproduce the experimental findings and provide guidance to the interpretation of the observed high-spin features.

The nucleus ${}^{208}$Pb provides an iconic test of the nuclear shell model because its 82 protons and 126 neutrons are both magic numbers. When excited levels are discovered and characterized, this nucleus provides a means to investigate the mechanisms responsible for the generation of angular momentum and, ultimately, for the development of collectivity. This experiment is a tour de force that reveals extensive new information on ${}^{208}$Pb about high-angular-momentum states, isomeric states, and collective states of octupole nature; thus it serves as a showcase for shell-model descriptions. Many of the states explored show good overall agreement with theory, but others at the highest energies reveal discrepancies, pointing to the need for improved calculations. Above the highest-lying ${28}^{-}$ isomer $\ensuremath{\gamma}$ transitions arising from yet higher spin levels could be identified in two separate experiments as displayed in the figure.

The high-spin structures of the N = 81 isotones 135Xe and 137Ba are investigated after multinucleontransfer (MNT) and fusion-evaporation reactions. Both nuclei are populated in (i) 136Xe+238U and (ii) 136Xe+208Pb MNT reactions employing the high-resolution Advanced Gamma Tracking Array (AGATA) coupled to the magnetic spectrometer PRISMA, (iii), in the 136Xe+198Pt MNT reaction employing the -ray array GAMMASPHERE in combination with the gas detector array Chico, and (iv) via a 11B+130Te fusion-evaporation reaction. The high-spin level schemes of 135Xe and 137Ba are considerably extended to higher energies. The 2058-keV (19=2 ) state in 135Xe is identified as an isomer, completing the systematics for the N = 81 isotones. Its half-life is measured to be 8.6(10) ns, corresponding to a transition probability of B(E2; 19=2 ! 15=2 ) = 0:539(69) W.u. Latest shell model calculations considering 132Sn as a closed core reproduce the experimental findings and provide guidance to the interpretation of the new levels. The experimentally deduced reduced quadrupole transition probabilities of the isomeric states are compared to shell-model predictions.

EXILL experimental campaign; International audience; The level scheme of 96Y was significantly extended and a new 201 ns isomer was located at 1655 keV excitation energy, with spin-parity assignment of 5± or 6−. The isomer decays to spherical low-spin structure by transitions with large hindrance and is fed by a short cascade which resembles the beginning of a rotational band. This is in analogy with the feeding and decay pattern of the 4− isomer in 98Y, here confirmed, by lifetime analysis, as a bandhead of a rotational structure with sizable deformation. It is suggested that the new isomer in 96Y arises from a shape change between deformed and spherical configurations, which indicates the appearance of deformation already at N = 57 in the yttrium chain. The experimental findings for 96Y are strengthened by theoretical calculations based on the complex Excited Vampir model.

Pre-equilibrium emissions affect the production of excited systems in nuclear reactions, thus modifying their properties which enter as input parameters in the comparison with statistical models. International audience; The decay of the one-proton valence nucleus 133Sb is studied usingthe cold-neutron induced fission of 235U and 241Pu targets. The experimentis performed at the ILL reactor in Grenoble, using a highly efficient HPGearray, also coupled to fast LaBr3(Ce) scintillators. High-spin excited statesabove the 16.6 s isomer are observed, and the lifetime of the 13/2+ and15/2+ states is measured by fast-timing techniques, revealing a complexnature of the wave functions. The experimental results are well-interpretedby a newly developed microscopic model which takes into account the couplingbetween the valence proton and excitations (both collective and noncollective)of the doubly magic 132Sn core.

The multipolarity of the main transition leading to the ground state in 210Bi was investigated using the angular correlations of γ rays. The analyzed γ -coincidence data were obtained from the 209Bi(n,γ )210Bi experiment performed at Institut Laue-Langevin Grenoble at the PF1B cold-neutron facility. The EXILL (EXOGAM at the ILL) multidetector array, consisting of 16 high-purity germanium detectors, was used to detect γ transitions. The mixing ratio of the 320-keV γ ray was defined by minimizing a multivariable χ2 function constructed from the coefficients of angular correlation functions for seven pairs of strong transitions in 210Bi. As a result, the almost pure M1 multipolarity of the 320-keV γ ray was obtained, with an E2 admixture of less than 0.6% only (95% confidence limit). Based on this multipolarity the neutron-capture cross section leading to the ground state in 210Bi, that decays in turn to radiotoxic 210Po, was determined to be within the limits 21.3(9) and 21.5(9) mb. This result is important for nuclear reactor applications.

The low-spin structure of the 210Bi nucleus was investigated in the neutron capture experiment 209Bi(n,γ )210Bi performed at ILL Grenoble at the PF1B cold-neutron facility. By using the EXILL multidetector array, consisting of 46 high-purity germanium crystals, and γγ-coincidence technique, 64 primary γ rays were observed (40 new) and a total number of 70 discrete states (33 new) were located below the neutron binding energy in 210Bi. The analysis of the angular correlations of γ rays provided information about transitions multipolarities, which made it possible to confirm most of the previously known spin-parity assignments and helped establish new ones. The obtained experimental results were compared to shell-model calculations involving one-valence-proton, one-valence-neutron excitations outside the 208Pb core. It has been found that while up to the energy of ∼2 MeV each state observed in 210Bi has its calculated counterpart; at higher excitation energies some levels cannot be described by the valence particle couplings. These states may arise from couplings of valence particles to the 3− octupole phonon of the doubly magic 208Pb core and may serve as a testing ground for models which describe single particle-phonon excitations.

A study of fusion-evaporation and (partly) fusion-fission channels for the $^{88}$Mo compound nucleus, produced at different excitation energies in the reaction $^{48}$Ti + $^{40}$Ca at 300, 450 and 600 MeV beam energies, is presented. Fusion-evaporation and fusion-fission cross sections have been extracted and compared with the existing systematics. Experimental data concerning light charged particles have been compared with the prediction of the statistical model in its implementation in the Gemini++ code, well suited even for high spin systems, in order to tune the main model parameters in a mass region not abundantly covered by exclusive experimental data. Multiplicities for light charged particles emitted in fusion evaporation events are also presented. Some discrepancies with respect to the prediction of the statistical model have been found for forward emitted $\alpha$-particles; they may be due both to pre-equilibrium emission and to reaction channels (such as Deep Inelastic Collisions, QuasiFission/QuasiFusion) different from the compound nucleus formation.

A. Vogt et al. ; 12 págs.; 9 figs.; 1 tab., Detailed spectroscopic information on the N∼82 nuclei is necessary to benchmark shell-model calculations in the region. The nuclear structure above long-lived isomers in Xe134 is investigated after multinucleon transfer (MNT) and actinide fission. Xenon-134 was populated as (i) a transfer product in Xe136+U238 and Xe136+Pb208 MNT reactions and (ii) as a fission product in the Xe136+U238 reaction employing the high-resolution Advanced Gamma Tracking Array (AGATA). Trajectory reconstruction has been applied for the complete identification of beamlike transfer products with the magnetic spectrometer PRISMA. The Xe136+Pt198 MNT reaction was studied with the γ-ray spectrometer GAMMASPHERE in combination with the gas detector array Compact Heavy Ion Counter (CHICO). Several high-spin states in Xe134 on top of the two long-lived isomers are discovered based on γγ-coincidence relationships and information on the γ-ray angular distributions as well as excitation energies from the total kinetic energy loss and fission fragments. The revised level scheme of Xe134 is extended up to an excitation energy of 5.832 MeV with tentative spin-parity assignments up to 16+. Previous assignments of states above the 7- isomer are revised. A high-spin isomer with $\ensuremath{\tau}g700$ ns has been found in $^{204}\mathrm{Hg}$, populated in reactions of 1360-MeV $^{208}\mathrm{Pb}$ and 330-MeV $^{48}\mathrm{Ca}$ beams with a thick $^{238}\mathrm{U}$ target and a 1450-MeV $^{208}\mathrm{Pb}$ beam on a thick $^{208}\mathrm{Pb}$ target. The observed $\ensuremath{\gamma}$-ray decay of the isomer has established the yrast states below it, including another isomer with $\ensuremath{\tau}=33(3)$ ns. The experimental results are compared with shell-model calculations that include four holes in the configuration space between $^{132}\mathrm{Sn}$ and $^{208}\mathrm{Pb}$. The available spectroscopic information, including transition strengths, total conversion, and angular correlation coefficients, together with the observed agreement with the calculations, allows spin, parity, and configuration assignments to be proposed for the experimental states. The $\ensuremath{\tau}g700$ ns isomer is the ${22}^{+}$ state of maximum spin available from the alignment of the four valence holes with the configuration $\ensuremath{\pi}{h}_{11/2}^{\ensuremath{-}2}\ensuremath{\nu}{i}_{13/2}^{\ensuremath{-}2}$.

Background: Nuclear structure information for the neutron-rich actinide nuclei is important since it is the benchmark for theoretical models that provide predictions for the heaviest nuclei. Purpose: gamma-ray spectroscopy of neutron-rich heavy nuclei in the actinide region. Method: Multinucleon-transfer reactions in Zn-70 + U-238 and Xe-136 + U-238 have been measured in two experiments performed at the INFN Legnaro, Italy. In the Zn-70 experiment the high-resolution HPGe Clover Array (CLARA) coupled to the magnetic spectrometer PRISMA was employed. In the Xe-136 experiment the high-resolution Advanced Gamma Tracking Array (AGATA) was used in combination with PRISMA and the Detector Array for Multinucleon Transfer Ejectiles (DANTE). Results: The ground-state band (g.s. band) of U-240 was measured up to the 20(+) level and a tentative assignment was made up to the (24(+)) level. Results from gamma gamma coincidence and from particle coincidence analyses are shown. Moments of inertia (MoI) show a clear upbend. Evidence for an extended first negative-parity band of U-240 is found. Conclusions: A detailed comparison with latest calculations shows best agreement with cranked relativistic Hartree-Bogoliubov (CRHB) calculations for the g.s. band properties. The negative-parity band shows the characteristics of a K-pi = 0 band based on an octupole vibration.

Background: Multinucleon transfer reactions (MNT) are a competitive tool to populate exotic neutron-rich nuclei in a wide region of nuclei, where other production methods have severe limitations or cannot be used at all. Purpose: Experimental information on the yields of MNT reactions in comparison with theoretical calculations are necessary to make predictions for the production of neutron-rich heavy nuclei. It is crucial to determine the fraction of MNT reaction products which are surviving neutron emission or fission at the high excitation energy after the nucleon exchange. Method: Multinucleon transfer reactions in Xe-136 + U-238 have been measured in a high-resolution gamma-ray/particle coincidence experiment. The large solid-angle magnetic spectrometer PRISMA coupled to the high-resolution Advanced Gamma Tracking Array (AGATA) has been employed. Beamlike reaction products after multinucleon transfer in the Xe region were identified and selected with the PRISMA spectrometer. Coincident particles were tagged by multichannel plate detectors placed at the grazing angle of the targetlike recoils inside the scattering chamber. Results: Mass yields have been extracted and compared with calculations based on the GRAZING model for MNT reactions. Kinematic coincidences between the binary reaction products, i.e., beamlike and targetlike nuclei, were exploited to obtain population yields for nuclei in the actinide region and compared to x-ray yields measured by AGATA. Conclusions: No sizable yield of actinide nuclei beyond Z = 93 is found to perform nuclear structure investigations. In-beam gamma-ray spectroscopy is feasible for few-neutron transfer channels in U and the -2p channel populating Th isotopes.

International audience; The low-spin structure of one-proton, one-neutron $^{210}$Bi nucleus was investigated in cold-neutron capture reaction on$^{209}$Bi. The $\gamma$-coincidence measurements were performed with use of EXILL array consisted of 16 HPGe detectors. The experimentalresults were compared to shell-model calculations involving valence particles excitations. The $^{210}$Bi nucleus offers the potentialto test the effective proton-neutron interactions because most of the states should arise from the proton-neutron excitations. Additionally,it was discovered that a few states should come from the couplings of valence particles to the $3^-$ octupole vibration in$^{208}$Pb which provides also the possibility of testing the calculations involving the core excitations.

High-energy giant dipole resonance (GDR) γ rays were measured following the decay of the hot, rotating compound nucleus of 88Mo, produced at excitation energies of 124 and 261 MeV. The reaction 48Ti+ 40Ca at 300 and 600 MeV bombarding energies has been used. The data were analyzed using the statistical modelMonte Carlo code GEMINI++. It allowed extracting the giant dipole resonance parameters by fitting the high-energy γ -ray spectra. The extracted GDR widths were compared with the available data at lower excitation energy and with theoretical predictions based on (i) The Lublin-Strasbourg drop macroscopic model, supplemented with thermal shape fluctuations analysis, and (ii) The phonon damping model. The theoretical predictions were convolutedwith the population matrices of evaporated nuclei from the statistical model GEMINI++. Also a comparison with the results of a phenomenological expression based on the existing systematics, mainly for lower temperature data, is presented and discussed. A possible onset of a saturation of the GDR width was observed around T = 3 MeV.

International audience; We report on preliminary results from the experiment performed at Legnaro National Laboratories aiming at the investigation of the shape evolution of the Mo-88 nucleus. The GDR spectra obtained for two data sets measured at Ti-48 beam energy of 300 and 450 MeV corresponding to 3 and 3.8 MeV temperatures, respectively, are presented. The low energy component in GDR strength functions, similar to the theoretical predictions of LSD model, possibly indicates the presence of Jacobi shape transition.

An exploratory experiment performed at REX-ISOLDE to investigate cluster-transfer reactions with radioactive beams in inverse kinematics is presented. The aim of the experiment was to test the potential of cluster-transfer reactions at the Coulomb barrier as a mechanism to explore the structure of exotic neutron-rich nuclei. The reactions Li7(Rb98,αxn) and Li7(Rb98,txn) were studied through particle-γ coincidence measurements, and the results are presented in terms of the observed excitation energies and spins. Moreover, the reaction mechanism is qualitatively discussed as a transfer of a clusterlike particle within a distorted-wave Born approximation framework. The results indicate that cluster-transfer reactions can be described well as a direct process and that they can be an efficient method to investigate the structure of neutron-rich nuclei at medium-high excitation energies and spins., SCOPUS: ar.j, info:eu-repo/semantics/published

At the PF1B cold neutron beam line at the Institut Laue Langevin, the EXILL array consisting of EXOGAM, GASP and ILL-Clover detectors was used to perform (n,$\gamma$) measurements at very high coincidence rates. About ten different reactions were measured in autumn 2012 using a highly collimated cold neutron beam. In spring 2013, the EXOGAM array was combined with 16 LaBr3(Ce) scintillators in the EXILL&FATIMA campaign for the measurement of lifetimes using the generalised centroid difference method. We report on the properties of the set-ups and present first results from both campaigns.

This new detector consists of four individual closely packed scintillator detectors, each of them made of 4 cm of LaBr3(Ce) and 6 cm of LaCl3(Ce) in phoswich configuration (optically coupled and with a common readout). In this paper we report on the results of a beam test performed at the Bronowice Cyclotron Centre (CCB) in Krakow, showing the response of this versatile instrument to high energy protons (70-230 MeV). Furthermore, for the first time we prove that we can reconstruct the original energy of fast protons (E>200MeV) which pass through the total length of the crystal while still retaining a good energy resolution., This work was partly financed by the Spanish Research funding agency: Ministerio de Economía y Competitividad under project FPA2012-32443, and partly through FP7 by the Era-Net NuPNET/03/12 (GANAS) project. Excited states above the seniority $\ensuremath{\nu}=2$ isomers have been investigated in even neutron-rich ${}^{118--128}$Sn isotopes produced by fusion-fission of 6.9 MeV/$A$ $^{48}\mathrm{Ca}$ beams with $^{208}\mathrm{Pb}$ and $^{238}\mathrm{U}$ targets and by fission of 6.7 MeV/$A$ $^{64}\mathrm{Ni}$ beams on a $^{238}\mathrm{U}$ target. Level schemes up to excitation energies in excess of 8 MeV have been established based on multifold $\ensuremath{\gamma}$-ray coincidence relationships measured with the Gammasphere array. Isotopic identification of crucial transitions was achieved through a number of techniques, including prompt and delayed cross-coincidence methods. As a result, seniority $\ensuremath{\nu}=4$, 15${}^{\ensuremath{-}}$, and 13${}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ isomers were observed and their half-lives determined. These long-lived states in turn served as steppingstones to delineate the isomeric decays and to locate higher-lying states with good sensitivity. As the observed isomeric decays feed down to 10${}^{+}$ and 7${}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ isomers, firm spin-parity assignments could be proposed for most of the seniority $\ensuremath{\nu}=4$ states. Higher-lying, seniority $\ensuremath{\nu}=6$ levels were assigned tentatively on the basis of the observed deexcitation paths as well as of general yrast population arguments. Shell-model calculations were carried out down to $^{122}\mathrm{Sn}$ in the ${g}_{7/2}$, ${d}_{5/2}$, ${d}_{3/2}$, ${s}_{1/2}$, and ${h}_{11/2}$ model space of neutron holes with respect to a $^{132}\mathrm{Sn}$ core. Effective two-body interactions were adjusted such that satisfactory agreement with data was achieved for $^{130}\mathrm{Sn}$. The results reproduce the experimental level energies and spin-parity assignments rather well. The intrinsic structure of the states is discussed on the basis of the calculated wave functions which, in many instances, point to complex configurations. In a few cases, the proposed assignments lead to unresolved issues. The smooth, systematic decrease of the level energies with mass $A$ is accompanied by the similarly regular behavior with $A$ of the reduced transition probabilities extracted from the isomeric half-lives. This $A$ dependence is discussed for the $E1$ and $E2$ transitions in the decay of the seniority $\ensuremath{\nu}=4$ isomers and is compared to that determined in earlier work for the $E2$ transition rates from the $\ensuremath{\nu}=2,3$ isomers.

Deep-inelastic collisions of a 208Pb beam on a 208Pb target were performed using the ATLAS accelerator at Argonne National Laboratory. The Gammasphere detector array was used for the detection of prompt and delayed gamma-rays of the reaction products.207Tl is one proton away from the 208Pb doubly-magic nucleus. Its low-energy level structure is dominated by the single proton-hole states πs1/2−1, πd3/2−1 and πh11/2−1. The 11/2− state is isomeric with T1/2 = 1.33(11) s. The reaction partner of 207Tl is 209Bi, which has arelatively well established level scheme compared to 207Tl. Cross-coincidences between these two nuclei were used to confirm or establish levels above the 11/2− isomeric state in 207Tl. These states are obtained via breaking of the neutron core. Angular correlation analysis was performed on known transitions in 208Pb, proving the applicability of this method for multipolarity assignment.

We investigated the response of a 3″ × 3″ (7.62 cm × 7.62 cm) LaBr 3 :Ce detector to monochromatic protons within an energy range of 70–230 MeV. The experiment was performed at the new cyclotron at the Cyclotron Centre Bronowice (CCB) of the Henryk Niewodniczanski Institute of Nuclear Physics, Krakow, Poland. Protons with energies between 70 and 185 MeV were stopped inside the crystal. Three different values of PMT high voltage were used, in each case, the energy resolution, the quenching factor with respect to the gamma rays were measured. In addition, the anode pulses were acquired for both gamma rays (from a CmC source) and protons and the comparison between them will be shown.

The high-spin structure of the neutron-rich {sup 204}Tl isotope has been studied up to a 11.2-MeV excitation energy and a I=30 spin range using the deep-inelastic heavy-ion {gamma}-spectroscopy method with reactions of {sup 48}Ca on thick {sup 208}Pb and {sup 238}U targets. The established structure of yrast levels involves four isomeric states up to I{sup {pi}=}22{sup -}, the highest spin state available for the maximally aligned four valence holes. The observations are interpreted and quantitatively confirmed by shell-model calculations. The rates of the identified M2 and E3 isomeric decays are discussed and a striking analogy is found for the yrast level structures and {gamma} decays observed in the 18{sup +} to 22{sup -} and 45/2{sup -} to 53/2{sup +} spin ranges in {sup 204}Tl and {sup 203}Hg, respectively. In the highest spin part of the scheme, two prominently populated yrast states are tentatively identified as the 3{sup -} {sup 208}Pb core excitation built on the 22{sup -} and 20{sup +} maximally aligned four-hole states. Their energies are reproduced well by using energy shifts observed in experiments for the {sup 208}Pb core octupole excitation coupled to simpler intrinsic structures.

The decay of a new, 53/2{sup +}, isomer at 8281 keV in {sup 203}Hg has been studied by {gamma} coincidence spectroscopy. A half-life of 146(30) ns was measured. In addition, another isomeric, 39/2{sup +}, level with a half-life of 7.8(1.5) ns was observed. Some elements of the Rydstroem shell-model interaction have been adjusted to reproduce level energies in nuclei with two to four holes in the {sup 208}Pb core. With this interaction, the new states in the five-hole nucleus {sup 203}Hg are reproduced with an rms error of 105 keV.

Excited states in the Z=19, N=29 neutron-rich 48K isotope have been studied using deep-inelastic transfer reactions with a thick target at Gammasphere and with a thin target at the PRISMA-CLARA spectrometer. The lowest excited states were located ; they involve a proton hole in the s1/2 or d3/2 orbital coupled to a p3/2 neutron. A new 7.1(5) ns, 5+ isomer, analog of the 7/2- isomer in 47K, was identified. Based on the observed gamma-decay pattern of the isomer a revised spin-parity assignment of 1- is proposed for the ground state of 48K.

Excited states in the N=30 neutron-rich isotope {sup 49}K have been studied using multinucleon transfer reactions with thin targets and the PRISMA-CLARA spectrometer combined with thick-target {gamma}-coincidence data from Gammasphere. The d{sub 3/2} proton-hole state is located 92 keV above the s{sub 1/2} ground state, and the proton-particle f{sub 7/2} state is suggested at 2104 keV. Three other levels are established as involving the coupling to 2{sup +} of two neutrons above the N=28 shell. The measured or estimated lifetimes served to reinforce the interpretation of the observed level structure, which is found to be in satisfactory agreement with shell-model calculations.

International audience; In this article we introduce a subjective notion of the predictive power of nuclear Hamiltonians (an objective one does not exist) and examine it in the particular context of the single-nucleon energy spectra. We consider various types of uncertainties originating both from the experiment and theory stressing the dominating character of the theoretical errors. The latter originate from the complexity of the nuclear many body systems that is not matched adequately by the formalism behind the present day nuclear Hamiltonians. The related inverse problem is formulated and the presence of errors (ignorance, lack of knowledge) is parametrized in terms of the associated probability distributions. Various hypotheses concerning the input uncertainties ('numerical noise ') are formulated and the impact of the input-uncertainties in the adjustment procedures down to the final parameter values and theoretical spectra is illustrated and discussed. A number of Open Problems are formulated and listed at the end of the article.

In this article we discuss the problem of a reliable determination of parameters of the nuclear mean-field Hamiltonians in view of obtaining high quality comparisons with the experimental single particle spectra: a. In the case of extrapolations to extreme (exotic) isospin nuclei as well as b. In terms of predictions of the energy levels that have not been so far measured also in 'non-exotic' nuclei. We formulate our discussion in terms of the Inverse Problem, a quickly growing sub-field of Applied Mathematics, and introduce a number of mathematical properties which are illustrated in Ref.1 We focus on those mechanisms that may significantly limit the predictive power of the resulting Hamiltonians.

High-spin states with the seniority v ≥ 2 have been investigated in the neutron-rich 118,120,122,124,126Sn isotopes. They were produced in fusion-fission processes following 48Ca + 208Pb, 48Ca + 238U reactions and via fission of target nuclei in the 64Ni + 238U system. By employing techniques of delayed- and cross-coincidences, it was possible to establish level schemes up to an 8 MeV excitation energy. The 13− and 15− states were identified as being isomeric and their half-lives were determined. The reduced transition probabilities extracted for isomeric transitions behave very regularly with the mass number A. The spin-parity values assigned to or suggested for the identified states were supported by shell-model calculations and by systematics.

The yrast structure of 207Pb above the 13/2+ isomeric state has been investigated in deep-inelastic collisions of 208Pb and 208Pb at ATLAS, Argonne National Laboratory. New and previously observed transitions were measured using the Gammasphere detector array. The level scheme of 207Pb is presented up to ~ 6 MeV, built using coincidence and γ-ray intensity analyses. In addition, the spin and parity assignments of states were made, based on angular distributions and comparisons to shell model calculations.

In this work, we present an exploratory experiment performed at REX-ISOLDE to investigate neutron-rich Sr, Y and Zr nuclei around mass A = 100 by cluster transfer reactions of radioactive Rb-98/Sr-98 beams on a Li-7 target. We discuss the problem of estimating uncertainties of the physical theories while keeping in mind the applications to nuclear structure. We present an analytical model which illustrates the present-day difficulties in achieving a satisfactory level of predictive power in nuclear structure theories as well as suggests the most important direction of improvements, required first of all on the level of the associated solution of the inverse problem of applied mathematics—as explained and illustrated in some detail in the text.

International audience; In this paper we formulate and discuss the strategy of constructing theories capable of providing not only the numerical predictions sensu strict but also the distributions of probability that such predictions apply in the predefined physics context. Examples of applications of the presented ideas are illustrated using as a choice the nuclear mean-field theory with two realistic realizations of the underlying Hamiltonians: Phenomenological Woods-Saxon and self-consistent Skyme-Hartree-Fock.
