A CMOS-compatible industrial processing and RF analysis of 150 mm GaN-on-HR-Si substrates with AlGaN and InAlN barrier is presented. Process development along with transfer to large-wafer scale is shown and some HEMT calibration devices produced on AlGaN/GaN following the aforementioned procedure are characterized in terms of RF-performance by using a set of measured multi-bias S-parameters. An automatic small-signal equivalent circuit extraction strategy for these AlGaN/GaN DUTs is validated and some de-embedded figures of merit are drawn out in order to initially evaluate this promising technology. In this study, thermal analysis, infrared spectroscopy (near and mid) in conjunction with low field NMR, have been used to characterize the crosslinking reaction involving phenol formaldehyde resin and a crosslinking agent, hexamethylenetetramine (HMTA) used as adhesive in organic-inorganic composites. The strong hydrogen bonds in the resin and the completely crystalline HMTA (T m = 280 °C) severely hamper the crosslinking process. Yet the addition of a small amount of plasticizer can induce an efficient (> 50% increase) crosslinking reaction as compared to the system without plasticizer. The infrared spectroscopy clarifies the dissolution process of the crystalline crosslinker and the specific interactions needed to achieve miscibility of the reactants. The thermal analysis enabled us to follow the reaction as a function of temperature. The low field NMR with the T 1 inverse recovery technique allowed us to monitor the crosslinking process directly. For the first time, it is now possible to identify the functionality of the plasticizer and correlate the degree of crosslinking achieved in order to assess the macroscopic cohesive strength needed for high performance adhesives.

Utilizing a combination of infrared spectroscopy, thermal analysis and low field NMR, we have elucidated the role of three types of reactive plasticizers on the crosslinking reaction between hexamethylenetetramine and phenol formaldehyde resin. These two seemingly dissimilar reactants are responsible for the exceptionally high mechanical strength in a number of organic-inorganic composites. The efficiencies of the curing reaction and the achieved crosslinked structures are strongly dependent on the type of plasticizer employed. Infrared active vibrations are used to characterize the changing molecular structures of the individual reactants as a function of temperature. The T 1 spin-lattice relaxation time measured using low field NMR is especially useful for the characterization of segmental dynamics of the chains in the formation of the extremely rigid crosslinked product. This study shows that the amount of crosslinking and the crosslinked structure can be very different for the three types of reactive plasticizers and also different in comparison to non-reactive plasticizers. We are also able to correlate the reactivity and functionality of the plasticizer to the crosslink density in the reacted product.

Quasi-free photoproduction of $ \eta{^\prime}$ -mesons off nucleons bound in the deuteron has been measured with the combined Crystal Barrel - TAPS detector. The experiment was done at a tagged photon beam of the ELSA electron accelerator in Bonn for incident photon energies from the production threshold up to 2.5GeV. The $ \eta{^\prime}$ -mesons have been detected in coincidence with recoil protons and recoil neutrons. The quasi-free proton data are in good agreement with the results for free protons, indicating that nuclear effects have no significant impact. The coincidence with recoil neutrons provides the first data for the $ \gamma$ n $ \rightarrow$ n $ \eta{^\prime}$ reaction. In addition, also first estimates for coherent $ \eta{^\prime}$ -production off the deuteron have been obtained. In agreement with model predictions, the total cross-section for this channel is found to be very small, at most at the level of a few nb. The data are compared to model calculations taking into account contributions from nucleon resonances and t -channel exchanges

Photoproduction of $\eta$ mesons off $^{12}$C, $^{40}$Ca, $^{93}$Nb, and $^{nat}$Pb nuclei has been measured with a tagged photon beam with energies between 0.6 and 2.2 GeV. The experiment was performed at the Bonn ELSA accelerator with the combined setup of the Crystal Barrel and TAPS calorimeters. It aimed at the in-medium properties of the S$_{11}$(1535) nucleon resonance and the study of the absorption properties of nuclear matter for $\eta$ mesons. Careful consideration was given to contributions from $\eta\pi$ final states and secondary production mechanisms of $\eta$-mesons e.g. from inelastic $\pi N$ reactions of intermediate pions. The analysis of the mass number scaling shows that the nuclear absorption cross section $\sigma_{N\eta}$ for $\eta$ mesons is constant over a wide range of the $\eta$ momentum. The comparison of the excitation functions to data off the deuteron and to calculations in the framework of a BUU-model show no unexplained in-medium modifications of the S$_{11}$(1535)., Comment: Accepted for publication in Eur. The γ + p → K 0 + Σ + photoproduction reaction is investigated in the energy region from threshold to E γ = 2250 MeV . The differential cross section exhibits increasing forward-peaking with energy, but only up to the K ⁎ threshold. Beyond, it suddenly returns to a flat distribution with the forward cross section dropping by a factor of four. In the total cross section a pronounced structure is observed between the K ⁎ Λ and K ⁎ Σ thresholds.

The photoproduction of η ′ -mesons off different nuclei has been measured with the CBELSA/TAPS detector system for incident photon energies between 1500–2200 MeV. The transparency ratio has been deduced and compared to theoretical calculations describing the propagation of η ′ -mesons in nuclei. The comparison indicates a width of the η ′ -meson of the order of Γ = 15 – 25 MeV at ρ = ρ 0 for an average momentum p η ′ = 1050 MeV / c , at which the η ′ -meson is produced in the nuclear rest frame. The inelastic η ′ N cross section is estimated to be 3–10 mb. Parameterizing the photoproduction cross section of η ′ -mesons by σ ( A ) = σ 0 A α , a value of α = 0.84 ± 0.03 has been deduced.

The polarization observable I^s, a feature exclusive to the acoplanar kinematics of multi-meson final states produced via linearly polarized photons, has been measured for the first time. Results for the reaction g p -> p pi0 eta are presented for incoming photon energies between 970 MeV and 1650 MeV along with the beam asymmetry I^c. The comparably large asymmetries demonstrate a high sensitivity of I^s to the dynamics of the reaction. Fits using Bonn-Gatchina partial wave analysis demonstrate that the new polarization observables carry significant information on the contributing partial waves., 11 pages, 6 figures, v2 to appear in Phys. Lett. B

Transarterial embolization of ruptured intercostal arteries due to massive bleeding represents an infrequent indication in severely injured patients. The current literature shows isolated case descriptions but no clinical trials exist. In the case depicted here embolization is represented as a form of therapy after haemorrhagic shock caused by a ruptured intercostal artery. The embolization carried out led to an immediate cessation of bleeding. The vital signs returned to normal immediately after the procedure and surgical intervention could be avoided. The course of the disease represented in the following shows the effectiveness of this type of treatment not only for bleeding due to pelvic fractures and abdominal injuries, but also for isolated arterial bleeding in other body regions.

Oscillatory shear rheometry is used to study the mechanical response of single-walled carbon nanotubes dispersed in solutions of acrylic diblock or triblock copolymers in 2-ethyl-1-hexanol. Thermal transitions in the copolymer solutions provide a route for the easy processing of these composite materials, with excellent dispersion of the nanotubes as verified by near-infrared photoluminescence spectroscopy. The nanotube dispersions form elastic networks with properties that are controlled by the junction points between nanotubes, featuring a temperature-dependent elastic response that is controlled by the dynamic properties of the matrix copolymer solution. The data are consistent with the formation of micelle-like aggregates around the nanotubes. At low temperatures the core-forming poly(methyl methacrylate) blocks are glassy, and the overall mechanical response of the composite does not evolve with time. At higher temperatures the enhanced mobility of the core-forming blocks enables the junctions to ach...

BACKGROUND AND STUDY AIM: Early diagnosis of ventriculostomy-related infection (VRI) is crucial for the early treatment and course of this disease. In neurosurgical patients the diagnostic criteria are equivocal, mostly because of bloodstained cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). The predictive value, sensitivity and specificity of intrathecal interleukin-6 (IL-6 CSF ) has been proven for VRI compared with classical diagnostic CSF parameters, i.e. cell countCSF (CC CSF ) and total protein CSF . PATIENTS AND METHODS: We prospectively analyzed the daily clinical data and CSF samples of 75 neurosurgical patients with an external ventricular drainage (EVD), which had been inserted predominantly because of poor-grade subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH). The intrathecal interleukin-6 concentrations (IL-6 CSF ) were correlated with the clinical course and VRI incidence, as diagnosed by the classical VRI criteria (CC CSF , total protein CSF , clinical symptoms). RESULTS: Based on classical criteria, bacterial meningitis occurred in 26.7% of patients. Patients with VRI manifested significantly (p>0.001) higher median values of IL-6 CSF (up to 2000-fold increase) the day before (day -1) infection was diagnosed by conventional parameters. Using a cut-off value of IL-6 CSF ≥2700 pg/ml [4050 pg/ml after WHO standardization] on day -1, the relative risk for VRI was 6.09 (95% CI: 2.62-14.18%). A predictive value of IL-6 CSF ≥2700 pg/ml [4050 pg/ml] for VRI was calculated of 89% (95% CI: 79.6-98.0%), a sensitivity of 73.7% and a specificity of 91.4%. The amount of intrathecal blood was an independent risk factor for VRI occurrence, whereas the mean duration of EVD in place showed no impact on the rate of infection. CONCLUSION: Our data indicate that IL-6 CSF is a reliable marker for predicting VRI prior to clinically manifest meningitis, one day earlier than the common diagnostic criteria of CSF infection (CC CSF , total protein CSF , clinical symptoms).

Decays of baryon resonances in the second and the third resonance region into N pi(0)pi(0) are studied by photoproduction of two neutral pions off protons. Partial decay widths of N* and Delta* resonances decaying into Delta(1232)pi, N(pi pi)(S), N(1440)P-11 pi, and N(1520)D-13 pi are determined in a partial wave analysis of this data and of data from other reactions. Several partial decay widths were not known before. Interesting decay patterns are observed which are not even qualitatively reproduced by quark model calculations. In the second resonance region, decays into Delta(1232)pi dominate clearly. The N(pi pi)(S)-wave provides a significant contribution to the cross section, especially in the third resonance region. Microfabricated regular sieving structures hold great promise as an alternative to gels to improve the speed and resolution of biomolecule separation. In contrast to disordered porous gel networks, these regular structures also provide well defined environments ideal for the study of molecular dynamics in confining spaces. However, the use of regular sieving structures has, to date, been limited to the separation of long DNA molecules, however separation of smaller, physiologically relevant macromolecules, such as proteins, still remains a challenge. Here we report a microfabricated anisotropic sieving structure consisting of a two-dimensional periodic nanofluidic filter array. The designed structural anisotropy causes different-sized or -charged biomolecules to follow distinct trajectories, leading to efficient separation. Continuous-flow size-based separation of DNA and proteins, as well as electrostatic separation of proteins, was achieved, demonstrating the potential use of this device as a generic molecular sieving structure for an integrated biomolecule sample preparation and analysis system.

The helicity dependence of the total cross section for the (gamma) over right arrow(p) over right arrow -> p pi(0)pi(0) reaction has been measured for the first time at incident photon energies from 400 to 800 MeV. The measurement, performed at the tagged photon beam facility of the MAMI accelerator in Mainz, used the large acceptance detector DAPHNE and a longitudinally polarized frozen-spin target. This channel is found to be excited predominantly when the photon and proton have a parallel spin orientation, most likely due to the intermediate production of the D-13(1520) resonance. However, the contribution of the antiparallel spin configuration, arising from other reaction mechanisms, is also not negligible. This result gives important new information to resolve the existing model discrepancies in the identification of the nucleon resonances contributing to this channel.

A high-quality double-polarization data set for the helicity dependence of the total and differential cross-sections for both gammap --> Npi channels in the Delta region has been obtained in the framework of the GDH experiment. The experiment, performed at the Mainz microtron MAMI, used a 4pi detection system, a circularly polarized photon beam, and a longitudinally polarized frozen-spin target. These data are included in the database to perform a multipole analysis to determine the properties of the Delta(1232)-resonance. For the resonant Delta(1232) multipoles we find a very good agreement with previous analyses, while the nonresonant ones show significant deviations.

Key issues of the structure of the nucleon can be addressed by experimental studies of Mesonproduction. Depending on the selected channels and kinematics, different aspects can be investigated. The measurements of charged channels at low t constitute a large part of the cross section and exhibit a special sensitivity of the meson cloud. These contributions can be strongly suppressed by using a polarized beam and target. Instead, the excitation of resonances are emphasized in this case. The choice of neutral channels in the final state shows also dominant sensitivities for resonance excitation. The sequential decay of resonances can be studied systematically for the first time.

The reaction p p → Λ Λ was examined by LEAR experiment PS185/3 at 1.525 and 1.640 GeV/c. The proton target was transversely polarized in order to measure the depolarization and spin transfer. Theoretical calculations of Dnn, the component of the depolarization normal to the production plane, differ greatly according to whether quark-gluon or meson-exchange models are employed. The measured Dnn and spin transfer Knn appear to be inconsistent with the specific models cited.

Omega photoproduction off hydrogen and deuterium has been studied with the tagged photon beam of the ELSA accelerator in Bonn for photon energies up to 2.0 GeV. The omega meson has been identified via the omega -> pi(0) gamma -> gamma gamma gamma decay mode, using the combined setup of the Crystal Barrel/TAPS detector systems. Both inclusive and exclusive analyses have been carried out. Differential and total cross-sections have been derived for omega mesons produced off free protons and off protons and neutrons bound in deuterium. The cross-section for the production off the bound neutron is found to be a factor of a parts per thousand 1.3 larger than the one off the bound proton in the incident beam energy region 1.2 GeV

Human and animal fungal pathogens are a growing threat worldwide leading to emerging infections and creating new risks for established ones. There is a growing need for a rapid and accurate identification of pathogens to enable early diagnosis and targeted antifungal therapy. Morphological and biochemical identification methods are time-consuming and require trained experts. Alternatively, molecular methods, such as DNA barcoding, a powerful and easy tool for rapid monophasic identification, offer a practical approach for species identification and less demanding in terms of taxonomical expertise. However, its wide-spread use is still limited by a lack of quality-controlled reference databases and the evolving recognition and definition of new fungal species/complexes. An international consortium of medical mycology laboratories was formed aiming to establish a quality controlled ITS database under the umbrella of the ISHAM working group on "DNA barcoding of human and animal pathogenic fungi." A new database, containing 2800 ITS sequences representing 421 fungal species, providing the medical community with a freely accessible tool at http://www.isham.org/ and http://its.mycologylab.org/ to rapidly and reliably identify most agents of mycoses, was established. The generated sequences included in the new database were used to evaluate the variation and overall utility of the ITS region for the identification of pathogenic fungi at intra-and interspecies level. The average intraspecies variation ranged from 0 to 2.25%. This highlighted selected pathogenic fungal species, such as the dermatophytes and emerging yeast, for which additional molecular methods/genetic markers are required for their reliable identification from clinical and veterinary specimens. © The Author 2015. The helicity dependence of the single pion photoproduction on the proton has been measured in the energy range from 200 to 450 MeV for the first time. The experiment, performed at the Mainz microtron MAMI, used a 4pi-detector system, a circularly polarized, tagged photon beam, and a frozen-spin target. The data obtained provide new information for multipole analyses of pion photoproduction and determine the main contributions to the Gerasimov-Drell-Hearn sum rule and the forward spin polarizability gamma(0).

In photoproduction experiments, a large number of final states yielding various resonance contributions are accessible. To extract resonance parameters via partial-wave analysis not only the measurement of differential cross-sections is necessary, but also the determination of polarization observables. At the electron accelerator ELSA (Bonn) the coherent bremsstrahlung method was used to generate a linearly polarized photon beam. Using the CBELSA/TAPS detector setup, the beam asymmetry Σ in the reaction γp → pπ 0 η was determined as a function of various masses and angles for photon energies between 970MeV and 1650MeV.

At the 3.5 GeV electron accelerator ELSA of Bonn University, polarized electrons have been accelerated up to 2.0 GeV, crossing several depolarizing resonances without significant depolarization. The polarized electrons were produced by photoemission from an AlGaAs–GaAs superlattice crystal using circularly polarized laser light. A harmonic correction scheme was successfully applied to the third imperfection resonance ( γa =3) and the polarization required for the planned experiments was conserved up to 2.0 GeV.

The results of an out of the scattering plane electroproduction coincidence experiment are reported for the reaction p(e, e′π0)p. The cross section ratio σ LT /σ TT has been determined by fitting the data. Assuming M 1+-dominance, the neutral pion production amplitude S 1+ has been extracted relative to the M 1+-amplitude. Systematic uncertainties were minimized by using a symmetric set-up and by measuring the whole azimuthal angle range. Three values of the amplitude ratios at and near the Δ-resonance have been extracted at a momentum transfer of Q 2=0.127(GeV/c)2.

Absolute differential and integrated-over-angle cross sections for the reactions 12 C( γ , π 0 ) 12 C and 13 C( γ , π 0 ) 13 C leaving the residual nuclei in the ground state have been measured with tagged bremsstrahlung photons in the near threshold region (170.1 MeV ≤ E γ ≤ 176.8 MeV). This reaction mechanism is sensitive to the whole nuclear volume and the coherent processes which occur are revealed by comparing the extracted cross sections for both isotopes with each other and with theoretical calculations.

The $^{12}$C(\ensuremath{\gamma},pn) and $^{12}$C(\ensuremath{\gamma},pp) reactions have been measured for photon energies between 80 and 157 MeV using a photon tagging spectrometer and plastic scintillator detectors. The overall energy resolution was \ensuremath{\sim}7 MeV, sufficient to determine the initial shells of the emitted nucleons. Corrections were made for solid angle and threshold effects by means of Monte Carlo simulations. For the (\ensuremath{\gamma},pn) reaction both the missing energy and recoil momentum distributions are largely consistent with a two-nucleon absorption process on p-shell an sp nucleon pairs. For the much smaller $^{12}$C(\ensuremath{\gamma},pp) cross section the reaction mechanism is not yet understood but the recoil momentum distributions suggest that final state interactions are not dominant.

The $^{12}\mathrm{C}$(\ensuremath{\gamma},p${)}^{11}$B differential cross section has been measured over proton angles ranging from 58\ifmmode^\circ\else\textdegree\fi{} to 128\ifmmode^\circ\else\textdegree\fi{}, using tagged photons of energy 80--157 MeV, for low-lying regions of residual excitation energy in $^{11}\mathrm{B}$. The data have been compared with four different types of calculation. It is shown that scaling of the cross section with momentum mismatch occurs for both the ground-state and excited-state data.

The results of three experiments carried out recently with the extracted electron beam of ELSA will be presented and discussed: The determination of the magnetic neutron formfactor out of an d(e,e′n)-experiment in the momentum transfer range.1≤ Q 2≤.6 (GeV/c)2. Sensitivity to a possible deformation of the N or/and Δ resides in the observable σ LT σ TT which has been measured in electropionproduction. The coupling of the η to the nucleon and the resonances in the second resonance region can be studied with the electroproduction of η's.Results of the total cross section in the region of the production threshold will be presented.

Epoxy resins are utilized extensively in coatings, paints, adhesives, electronics, and composites due to a combination of processability, stability, and property tunability. Over the past several decades, substantial research has focused on manipulating the mechanical properties of epoxy resins via control of the polymer structure and chemistry and the incorporation of various additives. While the quasi-static behavior of these systems has been thoroughly investigated, minimal research has investigated high rate mechanical response. This presentation will highlight the rate dependent behavior of model epoxy resins as a function of the monomer chemistry, chain structure, and resin morphology. The mechanisms for improving high rate energy dissipation in bulk epoxy resins are being translated to surface modification approaches that can be exploited to tune the mechanical behavior of epoxy-substrate interfacial regions. The interfacial chemistry and structure is being characterized utilizing the combination of synchrotron based X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy and Near Edge X-ray Absorption Fine Structure, and correlated with characterization of rate dependent adhesive performance.

At the Electron Stretcher Accelerator ELSA of Bonn University the left-right asymmetry A Φ of the reaction d(e, e p)n has been measured in quasi-free kinematics ( E e = 1.6 GeV, θ e = 14°). The scattered electrons were detected with a magnetic spectrometer. Due to the high duty cycle of ELSA non-magnetic proton detectors could be used. The experimental data are in good agreement with theoretical calculations, if relativistic corrections are taken into account.

Scanning near-field optical microscopy (SNOM) is a new technique which can resolve objects with sub-wavelength resolution. A convenient technique is to use a sharp fibre tip which detects an evanescent light field, the intensity of which depends exponentially on distance. The sharp tip is made by heating and stretching an optical fibre to draw it out into a fine tip, and subsequently etching the tip in hydrofluoric acid to reduce its radius of curvature to about 100 nm. Features as small as 5 nm in height and less than 100 nm in width have been observed with the fibre mounted in a novel head adapted for use with Digital Instruments Nanoscope II.

Precise data for quasi-free photoproduction of $\eta$ mesons off the deuteron have been measured at the Bonn ELSA accelerator with the combined Crystal Barrel/TAPS detector for incident photon energies up to 2.5 GeV. The $\eta$-mesons have been detected in coincidence with recoil protons and neutrons. Possible nuclear effects like Fermi motion and re-scattering can be studied via a comparison of the quasi-free reaction off the bound proton to $\eta$-production off the free proton. No significant effects beyond the folding of the free cross section with the momentum distribution of the bound protons have been found. These Fermi motion effects can be removed by an analysis using the invariant mass of the $\eta$-nucleon pairs reconstructed from the final state four-momenta of the particles. The total cross section for quasi-free $\eta$-photoproduction off the neutron reveals even without correction for Fermi motion a pronounced bump-like structure around 1 GeV of incident photon energy, which is not observed for the proton. This structure is even narrower in the invariant mass spectrum of the $\eta$-neutron pairs. Position and width of the peak in the invariant mass spectrum are $W\approx 1665$ MeV and FWHM $\Gamma\approx 25$ MeV. Photoproduction of neutral pions has been studied with the CBELSA/TAPS detector in the reaction $\gamma p\to p\pi^0$ for photon energies between 0.85 and 2.50 GeV. The $\pi^0$ mesons are observed in their dominant neutral decay mode: $\pi^0\to\gamma\gamma$. For the first time, the differential cross sections cover the very forward region, $\theta_{\rm c.m.}, Comment: 12 pages, 9 figures, minor modifications to PWA section

The 4He(γ,p) 3H reaction cross section has been measured with tagged photons of energy 81–158 MeV. Protons were detected over the angular range 55°–125°. The scaling of the data as a function of momentum mismatch has been examined for two reaction models, the modified quasideuteron mechanism and quasifree knockout. Both models show clear scaling behaviour but comparison of the predicted and measured scaling function shapes favours the modified quasideuteron mechanism at momenta up to ≈500 MeV/c.
