1. Search for Color-Suppressed $B$ Hadronic Decay Processes with CLEO

Abstract: Using 3.1 fb$^{-1}$ of data accumulated at the $\Upsilon$(4S) by the CLEO-II detector, corresponding to 3.3 million $B\bar{B}$ pairs, we have searched for the color-suppressed $B$ hadronic decay processes: $\bar{B}^0 \to D^0 (D^{*0}) X^0$, where $X^0$ is a light neutral meson $\pi^0$, $\rho^0$, $\eta$, $\eta'$ or $\omega$. No obvious signal is observed. We set 90 % C.L. upper limits on these modes, varying from $1.2 \times 10^{-4}$ for $\bar{B}^0 \to D^0 \pi^0$ to $1.9 \times 10^{-3}$ for $\bar{B}^0 \to D^{*0} \eta'$., Comment: 14 page postscript file, postscript file also available through http://w4.lns.cornell.edu/public/CLNS

2. Measurement of the Direct Photon Spectrum in $\Upsilon(1S)$ Decays

Abstract: Using data taken with the CLEO II detector at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring, we have determined the ratio of branching fractions: $R_{\gamma} \equiv \Gamma(\Upsilon(1S) \rightarrow \gamma gg)/\Gamma(\Upsilon(1S) \rightarrow ggg) = (2.75 \pm 0.04(stat.) \pm 0.15(syst.))%$. From this ratio, we have determined the QCD scale parameter $\Lambda_{\overline{MS}}$ (defined in the modified minimal subtraction scheme) to be $\Lambda_{\overline{MS}}= 233 \pm 11 \pm 59$ MeV, from which we determine a value for the strong coupling constant $\alpha_{s}(M_{\Upsilon(1S)}) = 0.163 \pm 0.002 \pm 0.014$, or $\alpha_{s}(M_{Z}) = 0.110 \pm 0.001 \pm 0.007$., Comment: 20 page postscript file, postscript file also available through http://w4.lns.cornell.edu/public/CLNS

Abstract: To widely commercialize electric vehicles (EVs), more efforts to improve their life span seem profoundly inevitable. Thermal conditions have profound the nonlinear effects on the degradation rate, performance, and safety level of an EV battery pack. In the current study, both cycle life and calendar life of a commercial LiFePO4-based cell are investigated experimentally via electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) for different operating temperatures. This is the first time that the effects of low temperatures such as − 20 °C and − 5 °C on the life of LiFePO4-based cells are investigated via EIS, which is the crucial case during the cold start of EVs in cold climate regions of the world. The results show a considerable increase of solvent resistance for the cell which experienced calendar aging test at 55 °C; this demonstrates a drastic thickening of the SEI for this storage temperature. Moreover, anode cracking is clearly observed at such a high temperature. The results of the cycle aging tests also show that the increase in the solvent resistance is negligible for all other three operating temperatures. Nevertheless, the increasing of SEI thickness at low-temperature condition (− 5 °C) is noticeable. The role of temperature on the degradation level of LiFePO4-based cells has also been discovered via scanning electron microscopy.

Abstract: To widely commercialize electric vehicles more efforts for their life improvement seem extremely inevitable. Thermal conditions can have profound and nonlinear effects on the degradation rate of an electric vehicle battery pack as well as its performance and safety level. In the current study, both cycle life and calendar life of a commercial LiFePO4 cell are investigated experimentally by means of capacity fading and resistance increment evaluation for 4 different thermal conditions from extremely cold condition of − 20 °C—which is not well studied in the literature—till hot condition of 55 °C. The calendar life tests show that the best condition for storing cells is at 5 °C and 50% SOC and the cycle life tests demonstrate that the best operating temperature is 25 °C based on the dynamic stress test discharge/charge profile (a test profile for electric vehicles). It is also found that the capacity fading and resistance increment at a high temperature such as 50 °C are destructively significant. The presented curves in this paper can also serve as an aging data source for further work on battery lifetime modeling and diagnostics. The role of temperature on the degradation level is also discovered via scanning electron microscopy.

6. Optimizations of friction stir welding parameters with Taguchi method for the maximum electrical conductivity in Al-1080 welded sections

Abstract: In this paper, an attempt has been made to optimize the welding parameters. FSWed sections strength and quality is affected by materials transfer, work hardening and transformations. These properties depends strongly on the materials transfer, which is under the control of welding parameters. The soundness of friction stir welded sections usually studied by NDT techniques. However, it could be characterized by physical properties such as electrical conductivity. As the higher electrical conductivity, means lower defects and higher welding quality. For this purpose, the Taguchi L9 orthogonal design of experiment was used to optimize the welding parameters. The optimum process parameters and their effectiveness on the electrical conductivity of welded sections were analyzed by S/N ratio and ANOVA tests. The results indicated that the tilt angle and tool shape are the most influential parameters to catch the maximum conductivity in welded joints. The optimum tool shape and tilt angle are cylindrical and 3o. The optimum conditions for welding speed and rotational speed were obtained as following; 100 mm/min and 900 rpm in stir zone, 250 mm/min and 900 rpm in advancing side (AS) and 100 mm/min and 450 rpm in Retreating side (RS), respectively.

Abstract: This paper attempts to optimize welding parameters. The optimum conditions for welding and rotational speeds were characterized by 100 mm/min and 900 rpm in the stir zone, 250 mm/min and 900 rpm in Advancing Side (AS), and 100 mm/min and 450 rpm in Retreating Side (RS), respectively. Abstract: We present a new determination of the Ds decay constant, f_{Ds} using 5 million continuum charm events obtained with the CLEO II detector. Our value is derived from our new measured ratio of widths for Ds -> mu nu/Ds -> phi pi of 0.173+/- 0.021 +/- 0.031. Taking the branching ratio for Ds -> phi pi as (3.6 +/- 0.9)% from the PDG, we extract f_{Ds} = (280 +/- 17 +/- 25 +/- 34){MeV}. Abstract: Using 4.8 fb$^{-1}$ of data taken with the CLEO II detector, the branching fraction for the Cabibbo-suppressed decay $D^+\to\pi^0\ell^+\nu$ measured relative to the Cabibbo favored decay $D^+\to\bar{K^0}\ell^+\nu$ is found to be $0.046\pm 0.014\pm 0.017$. Using $V_{cs}$ and $V_{cd}$ from unitarity constraints, we determine $| f_+^{\pi}(0)/f_+^K(0)|^2=0.9\pm 0.3\pm 0.3$ We also present a 90% confidence level upper limit for the branching ratio of the decay $D^+ \to \eta e^+\nu_e$ relative to that for $D^+ \to \pi^0 e^+\nu_e$ of 1.5.

Abstract: Using the CLEO~II detector, we have measured the differential cross sections for exclusive two-photon production of light pseudoscalar mesons $\pi^0$, $\eta$, and $\eta^{\prime}$. From our measurements we have obtained the form factors associated with the electromagnetic transitions $\gamma^*\gamma$ $\to$ meson. We have measured these form factors in the momentum transfer ranges from 1.5 to 9, 20, and 30 GeV$^2$ for $\pi^0$, $\eta$, and $\eta^{\prime}$, respectively, and have made comparisons to various theoretical predictions., Comment: 30 page postscript file, postscript file also available through http://w4.lns.cornell.edu/public/CLNS

Abstract: We report the first observation of B{r_arrow}{eta}{sup {prime}}X transitions with high momentum {eta}{sup {prime}} mesons. We observe 39.0{plus_minus}11.6 B decay events with 2.0{lt}p{sub {eta}{sup {prime}}}{lt}2.7 GeV/c , the high momentum region where background from b{r_arrow}c processes is suppressed. We discuss the physical interpretation of the signal, including the possibility that it is due to b{r_arrow}sg{sup {asterisk}} transitions. Given that interpretation, we find B(B{r_arrow}{eta}{sup {prime}}X{sub s} )=[6.2{plus_minus}1.6(stat){plus_minus} 1.3(syst){sup +0.0}{sub {minus}1.5} (bkg)]{times}10{sup {minus}4} for 2.0{lt}p{sub {eta}{sup {prime}}}{lt}2.7 GeV/c . {copyright} {ital 1998} {ital The American Physical Society }

Abstract: We have searched for two-body charmless decays of B mesons to purely hadronic exclusive final states including $\omega$ or $\phi$ mesons using data collected with the CLEO II detector. With this sample of $6.6 \times 10^6$ B mesons we observe a signal for the $\omega K^+$ final state, and measure a branching fraction of B($B^+ \to \omega K^+$) = 1.5 +0.7 -0.6 +-0.2 $\times 10^{-5}$. We also observe some evidence for the $\phi K^*$ final state, and upper limits are given for 22 other decay modes. These results provide the opportunity for studies of theoretical models and physical parameters.

Abstract: We have observed the decay ${B}^{+}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{\overline{D}}^{0}{K}^{+}$, using $3.3\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{6}$ $B\overline{B}$ pairs collected with the CLEO II detector at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring. We find the ratio of branching fractions $R\ensuremath{\equiv}B({B}^{+}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{\overline{D}}^{0}{K}^{+})/B({B}^{+}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{\overline{D}}^{0}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{+})\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}=\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}0.055\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.014\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.005$.

Abstract: We have studied semileptonic B meson decays with a p-wave charm meson in the final state using 3.29×10^6 BB events collected with the CLEO II detector at the Cornell Electron-Positron Storage Ring. We find a value for the exclusive semileptonic product branching fraction B(B^-→D_1^0l^-ν _l)B(D_1^0→D^(*+)π^-) = (0.373±0.085±0.052±0.024)% and an upper limit for B(B^-→D_2^(*0)l^-ν_l)B(D_2^(*0)→D^(*+)π^-)

Abstract: We have observed a signal for the decay D^(*+)→D^+γ at a significance of 4 standard deviations. From the measured branching ratio B(D^(*+)→D^+γ)/B(D^(*+)→D^+π^0) = 0.055±0.014±0.010 we find B(D^(*+)→D^+γ) = 0.017±0.004±0.003, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic. We also report the highest precision determination of the remaining D^(*+) branching fractions.

Abstract: Using 3.1 fb$^{-1}$ of data accumulated at the $\Upsilon$(4S) by the CLEO-II detector, corresponding to 3.3 million $B\bar{B}$ pairs, we have searched for the color-suppressed $B$ hadronic decay processes: $\bar{B}^0 \to D^0 (D^{*0}) X^0$, where $X^0$ is a light neutral meson $\pi^0$, $\rho^0$, $\eta$, $\eta'$ or $\omega$. No obvious signal is observed. We set 90 % C.L. upper limits on these modes, varying from $1.2 \times 10^{-4}$ for $\bar{B}^0 \to D^0 \pi^0$ to $1.9 \times 10^{-3}$ for $\bar{B}^0 \to D^{*0} \eta'$.

Abstract: In a sample of 6.6×10^6 produced B mesons we have observed decays B→η′K, with branching fractions B(B^+→η′K^+) = (6.5_(-1.4)^(+1.5)±0.9)×10^(-5) and B(B^0→η′K^0) = (4.7_(-2.0)^(+2.7)±0.9)×10^(-5). We have searched with comparable sensitivity for 17 related decays to final states containing an η or η′ meson accompanied by a single particle or low-lying resonance. Our upper limits for these constrain theoretical interpretations of the B→η′K signal.

Abstract: We present a measurement of the absolute branching fraction for D^0→K^-π^+ using the reconstruction of the decay chain B →D^(*+)Xl^-ν , D^(*+)→D^0π^+ where only the lepton and the low-momentum pion from the D^(*+) are detected. With data collected by the CLEO II detector at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring, we have determined B(D^0→K^-π^+) = [3.81±0.15(stat)±0.16(syst)]%.

Abstract: We have searched for the decay $\stackrel{\ensuremath{\rightarrow}}{B}{D}_{s1}^{+}(2536)X$ and measured an upper limit for the inclusive branching fraction of $\mathcal{B}(\stackrel{\ensuremath{\rightarrow}}{B}{D}_{s1}^{+}X)l0.96%$ at the 90% confidence level. This limit is small compared with the total expected $\stackrel{\ensuremath{\rightarrow}}{B}{D}^{(*)}{D}^{(*)}\mathrm{KX}$ rate. Assuming factorization, the ${D}_{s1}^{+}$ decay constant is constrained to be ${f}_{{D}_{s1}^{+}}$114 MeV at the 90% confidence level, at least 2.5 times smaller than that of ${D}_{s}^{+}$.

Abstract: Using data recorded by the CLEO-II detector at CESR, we report new measurements of the branching fractions for the decays of the charmed baryon {Lambda}{sub c}{sup +} into pK{sup {minus}}{pi}{sup +}{pi}{sup 0}, p{bar K}{sup 0}, p{bar K}{sup 0}{pi}{sup +}{pi}{sup {minus}}, and p{bar K}{sup 0}{pi}{sup 0}, all measured relative to pK{sup {minus}}{pi}{sup +}. The relative branching fractions are 0.67{plus_minus}0.04{plus_minus}0.11,0.46{plus_minus}0.02{plus_minus}0.04,0.52 {plus_minus}0.04{plus_minus}0.05, and 0.66{plus_minus}0.05{plus_minus}0.07, respectively. {copyright} {ital 1998} {ital The American Physical Society}

Abstract: The decays ϒ(4S)→BB , followed by B→D^*π and D^*→Dπ, permit reconstruction of all kinematic quantities that describe the sequence without reconstruction of the D, with reasonably low backgrounds. Using an integrated e^+e^- luminosity of 3.1 fb^(-1) accumulated at the ϒ(4S) by the CLEO-II detector, we report measurements of B(B ^0→D^(*+)π^-) = (2.81±0.11±0.21±0.05)×10^(-3) and B(B-→D^*0π^-) = (4.34±0.33±0.34±0.18)×10^(-3).

Abstract: Using the CLEO detector at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring, we have made a measurement of R≡σ(e^+e^-→hadrons)/σ(e^+e^-→μ^+μ^-)=3.56±0.01±0.07 at √s=10.52 GeV. This implies a value for the strong coupling constant of α_s(10.52 GeV)=0.20±0.01±0.06, or α_s(MZ)=0.13±0.005±0.03.

Abstract: The CLEO collaboration has embarked on an ambitious upgrade of the CLEO detector to match the upgrade of the CESR accelerator to luminosities of 2 × 10 33 cm −2 sec −1 . This will bring a factor ten improvement in the measurement of rare B decays and hence, increased sensitivity to physics at high mass scales and also the possibility of measuring CP violation. The upgrade includes a new four layer double-sided silicon detector. Each double-sided silicon wafer is 2.6 cmx 5.1 cm × 300 μ m . To maximize solid angle coverage with minimal material in the detector volume the detector chains are very long, up to 5 detectors per electronic readout channel, resulting in large series resistance and large detector capacitance. Moderate backgrounds permit the electronics to operate with a 1–3 μ s shaping time. A new front-end low noise preamplifier is being developed to maximize the signal to noise ratio, along with a modified SVX chip used for analog to digital conversion and sparsification. The detectors are connected to the electronics hybrid by a thin double sided kapton flex circuit. The length of the detector chains also requires novel mechanical support structures — CVD diamond beams axe the baseline solution. We are currently near the end of the prototype stage for all aspects for the project and will move into production by late summer. The detector will be installed in early 1998.

Abstract: Using data taken with the CLEO II detector at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring, we present the first full angular analysis in the color-suppressed modes B{sup 0}{r_arrow}J/{psi}K{sup *0} and B{sup +}{r_arrow}J/{psi}K{sup *+}. This leads to a complete determination of the decay amplitudes of these modes including the longitudinal polarization {Gamma}{sub L}/{Gamma}=0.52{plus_minus}0.07{plus_minus}0.04 and the P wave component {vert_bar}P{vert_bar}{sup 2}=0.16{plus_minus}0.08{plus_minus}0.04. Abstract: The decay {tau}{sup {minus}}{r_arrow}2{pi}{sup {minus}}{pi}{sup + }3{pi}{sup 0}{nu}{sub {tau}} has been studied with the CLEOII detector at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring. The branching fraction is measured to be (2.85{plus_minus}0.56{plus_minus}0.51){times}10{sup {minus}4} . The result is in good agreement with the isospin expectation but somewhat below the conserved-vector-current prediction. We have searched for resonance substructure in the decay. Within the statistical precision, the decay is saturated by the channels {tau}{sup {minus}}{r_arrow}{pi}{sup {minus}}2{pi}{sup 0 }{omega}{nu}{sub {tau}} , 2{pi}{sup {minus}}{pi}{sup +}{eta}{nu}{sub {tau}} , and {pi}{sup {minus}}2{pi}{sup 0}{eta}{nu}{sub {tau}} . This is the first observation of this {omega} decay mode and the branching fraction is measured to be (1.89{sup +0.74}{sub {minus}0.67}{plus_minus}0.40) {times}10{sup {minus}4} . {copyright} {ital 1997} {ital The American Physical Society}

Abstract: We use the CLEO detector at the Cornell e{sup +}e{sup {minus}} storage ring, CESR, to search for the two-photon production of the glueball candidate f{sub J}(2220) in its decay to K{sub s}K{sub s} . We present a restrictive upper limit on the product of the two-photon partial width and the K{sub s}K{sub s} branching fraction, ({Gamma}{sub {gamma}{gamma}}B{sub K{sub s}K{sub s}}){sub f{sub J(2220) }} . We use this limit to calculate a lower limit on the stickiness, which is a measure of the two-gluon coupling relative to the two-photon coupling. This limit on stickiness indicates that the f{sub J}(2220) has substantial glueball content. {copyright} {ital 1997} {ital The American Physical Society}

Abstract: Using data collected in the region of the Upsilon(4S) resonance with the CLEO II detector operating at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring CESR, we present the first observation of B mesons decaying into the charmed strange baryons Xi_c0 and Xi_c+. We find 79 +/- 27 Xi_c0 and 125 +/- 28 Xi_c+ candidates from B decays, leading to product branching fractions of BR(Bbar -> Xi_c0 X)BR(Xi_c0 -> Xi- pi+) = (0.144 +/- 0.048 +/- 0.021) x 10^-3 and BR(Bbar -> Xi_c+ X)BR(Xi_c+ -> Xi- pi+ pi+) = (0.453 +/- 0.096 +0.085-0.065) x 10^-3.

Abstract: We have searched for the rare decay of the eta meson $\eta \to e^{+}e^{-}$ using the CLEO II detector. The $\eta$'s were produced in $e^{+}e^{-}$ collisions with 10 GeV center-of-mass energy at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring (CESR). We find with 90% confidence the upper limit on the branching fraction $B(\eta \to e^{+}e^{-}) < 7.7\times 10^{-5}$. The application of conventional elementary particle theory to this decay predicts a branching fraction of about $10^{-9}$.

Abstract: A search for the decay of the tau lepton to seven charged pions and one or zero pizero mesons was performed using the BaBar detector at the PEP-II asymmetric-energy e+e- collider. The analysis uses 232.2 fb-1 of data at center-of-mass energies on or near the Y(4S) resonance. We observe 24 events with an expected background of 21.6+-1.3 events. Without evidence for a signal, we calculate an upper limit of BR(tau- --> 4pi- 3pi+ (pizero) nu_tau) 4pi- 3pi+ nu_tau and tau- --> 4pi- 3pi+ pizero nu_tau.

Abstract: Using data collected in the region of the {Upsilon}(4S) resonance with the CLEO-II detector, they report on the first observation of exclusive decays of the B meson to final states with a charmed baryon. They have measured the branching fractions {Beta}(B{sup -} {yields} {Lambda}{sub c}{sup +}{bar p}{pi}{sup -}) = (0.62{sub -0.20}{sup +0.23} {+-} 0.11 {+-} 0.10) x 10{sup -3} and {Beta}({bar B}{sup 0} {yields} {Lambda}{sub c}{sup +}{bar p}{pi}{sup +}{pi}{sup -}) = (1.33{sub -0.42}{sup +0.46} {+-} 0.31 {+-} 0.21) x 10{sup -3}. In addition, they report upper limits for final states of the form {bar B} {yields} {Lambda}{sub c}{sup +}{bar p}(n{pi}) and {Lambda}{sub c}{sup +}{bar p}(n{pi}){pi}{sup 0} where (n{pi}) denotes up to four charged pions.

Abstract: We report new measurements of the differential and total branching ratios for inclusive B decay to D{sup 0}, D{sup +}, and D{sup *+} and the first measurement of the same quantities for inclusive B decay to D{sup *0}. Here B is the mixture of B{sub d} and B{sub u} from {Upsilon}(4S) decay. Furthermore, since more than one charm particle (or antiparticle) of the same kind can be produced in B decay, here {open_quotes}inclusive B branching ratio{close_quotes} is used to mean the average number of charm particles and their antiparticles of a certain species produced in B decay. We obtain the following results (the first error is statistical, the second systematic of this analysis, the third propagated from other measurements): B(B{r_arrow}D{sup 0}X)=(0.636{plus_minus}0.014{plus_minus}0.019{plus_minus}0.0 8), B(B{r_arrow}D{sup +}X)=(0.235{plus_minus}0.009{plus_minus}0.009{plus_minus}0.024), B(B{r_arrow}D{sup *0}X) =(0.247{plus_minus}0.012{plus_minus}0.018{plus_minus}0.018), B(B{r_arrow}D{sup *+}X)=(0.239{plus_minus}0.011{plus_minus}0.014{plus_minus}0. 09). The following ratio of branching ratios is not affected by most of the systematic errors: B(B{r_arrow}D{sup *0}X)/ B(B{r_arrow}D{sup *+}X)=(1.03{plus_minus}0.07{plus_minus}0.09{plus_minus}0.08). We also report the first measurement of the momentum-dependent D{sup *0} polarization and a new measurement of the D{sup *+} polarization in inclusive B decay. Abstract: We have observed new channels for $\ensuremath{\tau}$ decays with an $\ensuremath{\eta}$ in the final state. We study 3-prong tau decays, using the $\ensuremath{\eta}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\ensuremath{\gamma}\ensuremath{\gamma}$ and $\ensuremath{\eta}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}3{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{0}$ decay modes and 1-prong decays with two ${\ensuremath{\pi}}^{0}$'s using the $\ensuremath{\eta}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\ensuremath{\gamma}\ensuremath{\gamma}$ channel. The measured branching fractions are $B({\ensuremath{\tau}}^{\ensuremath{-}}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{\ensuremath{-}}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{\ensuremath{-}}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{+}\ensuremath{\eta}{\ensuremath{\nu}}_{\ensuremath{\tau}})\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}=\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}({3.4}_{\ensuremath{-}0.5}^{+0.6}\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.6)\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{\ensuremath{-}4}$ and $B({\ensuremath{\tau}}^{\ensuremath{-}}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{\ensuremath{-}}2{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{0}\ensuremath{\eta}{\ensuremath{\nu}}_{\ensuremath{\tau}})\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}=\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}(1.4\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.6\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.3)\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{\ensuremath{-}4}$. We observe clear evidence for ${f}_{1}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\ensuremath{\eta}\ensuremath{\pi}\ensuremath{\pi}$ substructure and measure $B({\ensuremath{\tau}}^{\ensuremath{-}}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{f}_{1}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{\ensuremath{-}}{\ensuremath{\nu}}_{\ensuremath{\tau}})\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}=\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}({5.8}_{\ensuremath{-}1.3}^{+1.4}\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}1.8)\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{\ensuremath{-}4}$. We have also searched for ${\ensuremath{\eta}}^{\ensuremath{'}}(958)$ production and obtain 90% C.L. upper limits $B({\ensuremath{\tau}}^{\ensuremath{-}}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{\ensuremath{-}}{\ensuremath{\eta}}^{\ensuremath{'}}{\ensuremath{\nu}}_{\ensuremath{\tau}})l7.4\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{\ensuremath{-}5}$ and $B({\ensuremath{\tau}}^{\ensuremath{-}}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{\ensuremath{-}}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{0}{\ensuremath{\eta}}^{\ensuremath{'}}{\ensuremath{\nu}}_{\ensuremath{\tau}})l8.0\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{\ensuremath{-}5}$.

Abstract: Using the CLEO detector at the Cornell e{sup +}e{sup {minus}} storage ring CESR we study the two-photon production of {Lambda}{bar {Lambda}}, making the first observation of {gamma}{gamma}{r_arrow}{Lambda}{bar {Lambda}}. Abstract: Using e{sup +}e{sup {minus}} annihilation data collected by the CLEOII detector at CESR, we have observed the decay D{sup +}{sub s}{r_arrow}{omega}{pi}{sup +} . This final state may be produced through the annihilation decay of the D{sup +}{sub s} , or through final state interactions. We find a branching ratio of {Gamma}(D{sup +}{sub s}{r_arrow}{omega}{pi}{sup +})/{Gamma}(D{sup +}{sub s}{r_arrow} {eta}{pi}{sup +})=0.16{plus_minus}0.04{plus_minus}0 .03 , where the first error is statistical and the second is systematic. {copyright} {ital 1997} {ital The American Physical Society}

Abstract: We have searched for lepton flavor violating decays of the {tau} lepton using final states with an electron or a muon and one or two {pi}{sup 0} or {eta} mesons but no neutrinos. The data used in the search were collected with the CLEO II detector at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring (CESR) and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 4.68 fb{sup {minus}1} . No evidence for signals was found, resulting in much improved limits on the branching fractions for the one-meson modes and the first upper limits for the two-meson modes. {copyright} {ital 1997} {ital The American Physical Society}

Abstract: Using the CLEO-II data set we have searched for the Cabibbo-suppressed decays B{sup 0} {yields} D*{sup +}D*{sup -}. For the decay B{sup 0} {yields} D*{sup +}D*{sup -}, we observe one candidate signal event, with an expected background of 0.022 {+-} 0.011 events. This yield corresponds to a branching fraction of {Beta}(B{sup 0} {yields} D*{sup +}D*{sup -}) = (5.3{sub -3.7}{sup +7.1}(stat) {+-} 1.0(syst)) x 10{sup -4} and an upper limit of {Beta}(B{sup 0} {yields} D*{sup +}D{sup -}) < 2.2 x 10{sup -3} at the 90% CL. For B{sup 0} {yields} D*{sup {+-}}D{sup {-+}} and B{sup 0} {yields} D{sup +}D{sup -}, no significant excess of signal above the expected background level is seen, and we calculate the 90% CL upper limits on the branching fractions to be {Beta}(B{sup 0} {yields} D*{sup {+-}}D{sup {-+}}) < 1.8 x 10{sup -3} and B(B{sup 0} {yields} D{sup +}D{sup -}) < 1.2 x 10{sup -3}.

Abstract: Using data collected with the CLEO II detector at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring, we determine the ratio R{sub chrg} for the mean charged multiplicity observed in {Upsilon}(1S){r_arrow}gg{gamma} events, {l_angle}n{sub gluon}{sup {plus_minus}}{r_angle}, to the mean charged multiplicity observed in e{sup +}e{sup {minus}}{r_arrow}q{bar q}{gamma} events, {l_angle}n{sub quark}{sup {plus_minus}}{r_angle}. We find R{sub chrg}{equivalent_to}{l_angle}n{sub gluon}{sup {plus_minus}}{r_angle}/{l_angle}n{sub quark}{sup {plus_minus}}{r_angle}=1.04 {plus_minus}0.02(stat){plus_minus}0.05(syst) for jet-jet masses less than 7 GeV. {copyright} {ital 1997} {ital The American Physical Society}

Abstract: We have searched for the decays $B\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\ensuremath{\mu}{\overline{\ensuremath{\nu}}}_{\ensuremath{\mu}}\ensuremath{\gamma}$ and $B\ensuremath{\rightarrow}e{\overline{\ensuremath{\nu}}}_{e}\ensuremath{\gamma}$ in a sample of $2.7\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{6}$ charged $B$ decays collected with the CLEO II detector. In the muon channel, we observe no candidates in the signal region and set an upper limit on the branching fraction of $\mathcal{B}(B\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\ensuremath{\mu}{\overline{\ensuremath{\nu}}}_{\ensuremath{\mu}}\ensuremath{\gamma})l5.2\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{\ensuremath{-}5}$ at the 90% confidence level. In the electron channel, we observe five candidates in the signal region and set an upper limit on the branching fraction of $\mathcal{B}(B\ensuremath{\rightarrow}e{\overline{\ensuremath{\nu}}}_{e}\ensuremath{\gamma})l2.0\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{\ensuremath{-}4}$ at the 90% confidence level.

Abstract: We have measured the spectral shape Michel parameters ρ and η using leptonic decays of the τ, recorded by the CLEO II detector. Assuming e-μ universality in the vectorlike couplings, we find ρeμ = 0.735 ± 0.013 ± 0.008 and ηeμ = -0.015 ± 0.061 ± 0.062, where the first error is statistical and the second systematic. We also present measurements for the parameters for e and μ final states separately.

Abstract: The results of the research and development on the silicon detectors for the CLEO III vertex detector are reported. Since the CLEO III detector design requires up to five detectors to be daisy chained, a significant amount of effort was directed at reducing capacitance. We have succeeded in designing a 5 cm/spl times/2.5 cm double metal (z-side) detector with less than 10 pF strip capacitance. Capacitance is also near 10 pF for the r-/spl phi/ side. In addition, we have developed a novel p-barrier design (to isolate strips on the ohmic side) which virtually eliminates the Johnson noise component which results from the ohmic character of this type of isolation. We also report noise and cosmic ray signal data from various length ladders.

Abstract: We report a measurement of the magnitude of the {nu}{sub {tau}} helicity from {tau}-pair events taken with the CLEO detector at the CESR electron-positron storage ring. Events in which each {tau} undergoes the decay {tau}{r_arrow}h{nu}, with h a charged pion or kaon, are analyzed for energy correlations between the daughter hadrons, yielding {vert_bar}{xi}{sub h}{vert_bar} = 1.03{plus_minus}0.06{plus_minus}0.04, with the first error statistical and the second systematic. {copyright} {ital 1997} {ital The American Physical Society}

Abstract: Using data taken with the CLEO II detector at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring, we have determined the ratio of branching fractions: ${R}_{\ensuremath{\gamma}}\ensuremath{\equiv}\ensuremath{\Gamma}(\ensuremath{\Upsilon}(1S)\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\ensuremath{\gamma}\mathrm{gg})/\ensuremath{\Gamma}(\ensuremath{\Upsilon}(1S)\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\mathrm{ggg})=[2.75\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.04(\mathrm{stat})\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.15(\mathrm{syst})]%$. From this ratio, we have determined the QCD scale parameter ${\ensuremath{\Lambda}}_{\overline{\mathrm{MS}}}$ (defined in the modified minimal subtraction scheme) to be ${\ensuremath{\Lambda}}_{\overline{\mathrm{MS}}}=233\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}11\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}59$ MeV, from which we determine a value for the strong coupling constant ${\ensuremath{\alpha}}_{s}{(M}_{\ensuremath{\Upsilon}(1S)})=0.163\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.002\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.014$, or ${\ensuremath{\alpha}}_{s}{(M}_{Z})=0.110\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.001\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.007$.

Abstract: Using data collected with the CLEO II detector at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring, we present new measurements of the branching fractions for D{sup +} {yields} K{sub S}K{sup +} and D{sup +} {yields} K{sub S}{pi}{sup +}. These results are combined with other CLEO measurements to extract the ratios of isospin amplitudes and phase shifts for D {yields} KK and D {yields} K{pi}.

Abstract: Using data recorded by the CLEO-II detector at CESR, we report evidence of a pair of excited charmed baryons, one decaying into {Lambda}{sup +}{sub c}{pi}{sup +} and the other into {Lambda}{sup +}{sub c}{pi}{sup -}. The doubly charged state has a measured mass difference M({Lambda}{sup +}{sub c}{pi}{sup +}) -M({Lambda}{sup +}{sub c}) of 234.5{plus_minus}1.1{plus_minus}0.8 MeV/c{sup 2} and a width of 17.9{sup +3.8}{sub -3.2}{plus_minus}4.0MeV/c{sup 2}, and the neutral state has a measured mass difference M({Lambda}{sup +}{sub c}{pi}{sup -}) -M({Lambda}{sup +}{sub c}) of 232.6{plus_minus}1.0{plus_minus}0.8 MeV/c{sup 2} and a width of 13.0{sup +3.7}{sub -3.0}{plus_minus}4.0MeV/c{sup 2}. We interpret these data as evidence of the {Sigma}{sup *++}{sub c} and {Sigma}{sup *0}{sub c}, the spin (3)/(2){sup +} excitations of the {Sigma}{sub c} baryons. {copyright} {ital 1997} {ital The American Physical Society}

Abstract: Using data collected on the $\ensuremath{\Upsilon}(4S)$ resonance and the nearby continuum by the CLEO-II detector, we have studied combinations of baryons with leptons produced in the process $\ensuremath{\Upsilon}(4S)\ensuremath{\rightarrow}B\overline{B}$, $B\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\mathrm{lepton}+X$, $\overline{B}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\mathrm{baryon}+X$. Our results do not support models which attribute the bulk of ${\ensuremath{\Lambda}}_{c}$ production in $\overline{B}$ decay to the process $b\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{\mathrm{cW}}^{\ensuremath{-}}{,W}^{\ensuremath{-}}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\overline{c}s$.

Abstract: CLEO has studied $B$ decays to $\ensuremath{\pi}\ensuremath{\ell}\ensuremath{\nu}$, $\ensuremath{\rho}\ensuremath{\ell}\ensuremath{\nu}$, and $\ensuremath{\omega}\ensuremath{\ell}\ensuremath{\nu}$, where $\ensuremath{\ell}\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}=\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}eor\ensuremath{\mu}$, by incorporating the missing momentum into full $B$ reconstruction. With the ${B}^{0}$ and ${B}^{+}$ modes combined according to isospin predictions for the relative partial widths, we obtain $B({B}^{0}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{\ensuremath{-}}{\ensuremath{\ell}}^{+}\ensuremath{\nu})\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}=\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}(1.8\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.4\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.3\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.2)\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{\ensuremath{-}4}$ and $B({B}^{0}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{\ensuremath{\rho}}^{\ensuremath{-}}{\ensuremath{\ell}}^{+}\ensuremath{\nu})\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}=\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}(2.5\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}{0.4}_{\ensuremath{-}0.7}^{+0.5}\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.5)\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{\ensuremath{-}4}$, where the errors are statistical, systematic, and the estimated model dependence. We also estimate $|{V}_{\mathrm{ub}}|\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}=\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}(3.3\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}{0.2}_{\ensuremath{-}0.4}^{+0.3}\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.7)\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{\ensuremath{-}3}$.
