Investigations into the genesis and dynamical properties of cave ice are essential for assessing the climate significance of these underground glaciers. We drilled an ice core through a 7.1 m-thick ice body filling a large cavern of the dynamic ice cave Eisenriesenwelt (Austria). In addition to visual core inspections, quasi-continuous measurements at 2 cm resolution comprised particulate matter, stable water isotope (δ18O, δD) and electrolytic conductivity profiles supplemented by specifically selected samples analyzed for tritium and radiocarbon. We found that recent ablation led to an almost complete loss of bomb-derived tritium removing any ice accumulated since, at least, the early fifties leaving the actual ice surface even below the natural tritium level. The small particulate organic masses rendered radiocarbon dating inconclusive, though a crude estimate gave a basal ice age in the order of several thousand years. The visual stratigraphy and all investigated parameters showed a clear dichotomy between the upper 2 m and the bottom 3 m of the core, which points to a substantial change in the ice formation process. Main features of the core comprise the changing appearance and composition of distinct cryocalcite layers, extremely low total ion content and a surprisingly high variability of the isotope signature. Co-isotope evaluation (δD versus δ18O) of the core in comparison with data from precipitation and karst spring water clearly indicate that ice formation is governed by (slow) freezing of dripping water.

Background: Arabic, a Semitic language of the Afro-Asiatic variety, has a rich consonant inventory. Previous studies on Arabic phonological acquisition have focused primarily on dialects in Jordan and Egypt. Because Arabic varies considerably across regions, information is also needed for other dialects. Aims: To determine acquisition benchmarks for singleton consonants for Kuwaiti Arabic-speaking 4-year-olds. Methods & Procedures: Participants were 80 monolingual Kuwaiti Arabic-speaking children divided into two age groups: 46-54 and 55-62 months. Post-hoc, eight children were identified as possibly at risk for protracted phonological development. A native Kuwaiti Arabic speaker audio-recorded and transcribed single-word speech samples (88 words) that tested consonants across word positions within a variety of word lengths and structures. Transcription reliability (point-to-point) was 95% amongst the authors, and 87% with an external consultant. Three acquisition levels were designated that indicated the proportion of children with no mismatches ('errors') for a given consonant: 90%+ of children, 75-89%, fewer than 75%. Mismatch patterns were described in terms of a phonological feature framework previously described in the literature. Outcomes & Results: The Kuwaiti 4-year-olds produced many singleton consonants accurately, including pharyngeals and uvulars. Although the older age group had fewer manner and laryngeal mismatches than the younger age group, consonants still developing at age 5 included coronal fricatives and affricates, trilled /r/ and some uvularized consonants ('emphatics'). The possible at-risk group showed mastery of fewer consonants than the other children. By feature category, place mismatches were the most common, primarily de-emphasis and lack of contrast for [coronal, grooved] (distinguishing alveolar from interdental fricatives). Manner mismatches were next most common: the most frequent substitutions were [+lateral] [l] or other rhotics for /r/, and stops for fricatives. Laryngeal mismatches were few, and involved partial or full devoicing. Group differences generally reflected proportions of mismatches rather than types. Conclusions & Implications: Compared with studies for Jordanian and Egyptian Arabic, Kuwaiti 4-year-olds showed a somewhat more advanced consonant inventory than same age peers, especially with respect to uvulars, pharyngeals and uvularized (emphatic) consonants. Similar to the other studies, consonant categories yet to master were: [+trilled] /r/, coronal fricative feature [grooved], [+voiced] fricatives /?, z/ and the affricate /d???/ and some emphatics. Common mismatch patterns generally accorded with previous studies. This study provides criterion reference benchmarks for Kuwaiti Arabic consonant singleton acquisition in 4-year-olds.

Two 6-year-old male fraternal twins each received 8 weeks of morphosyntactic and phonological intervention in counterbalanced order. Progress occurred for most targets and measures, with each child making greater progress for either phonology or morphosyntax during the corresponding unitary-domain block. Gains were maintained during the subsequent alternate treatment block. Possible indirect changes in the non-treated domain were also observed in global measures. The data suggest that at least some school-aged children with concomitant difficulties in morphosyntax and phonology, perhaps those with significant constraints in each domain, can benefit from sequences of unitary-domain intervention. This study invites further research concerning many unresolved clinical issues for school-aged children with protracted development in both phonology and morphosyntax.

This study investigates the sensitivity of two brightness temperature differences (BTDs) in the infrared (IR) window of the Spinning Enhanced Visible and Infrared Imager (SEVIRI) to various cloud parameters in order to understand their information content, with a focus on cloud thermodynamic phase. To this end, this study presents radiative transfer calculations, providing an overview of the relative importance of all radiatively relevant cloud parameters, including thermodynamic phase, cloud-top temperature (CTT), optical thickness (τ), effective radius (Reff), and ice crystal habit. By disentangling the roles of cloud absorption and scattering, we are able to explain the relationships of the BTDs to the cloud parameters through spectral differences in the cloud optical properties. In addition, an effect due to the nonlinear transformation from radiances to brightness temperatures contributes to the specific characteristics of the BTDs and their dependence on τ and CTT. We find that the dependence of the BTDs on phase is more complex than sometimes assumed. Although both BTDs are directly sensitive to phase, this sensitivity is comparatively small in contrast to other cloud parameters. Instead, the primary link between phase and the BTDs lies in their sensitivity to CTT (or more generally the surface–cloud temperature contrast), which is associated with phase. One consequence is that distinguishing high ice clouds from low liquid clouds is straightforward, but distinguishing mid-level ice clouds from mid-level liquid clouds is challenging. These findings help to better understand and improve the working principles of phase retrieval algorithms.

An adolescent with a persistent frontal lisp participated in a two-part 11-session intervention case study. The first phase used ultrasound imagery and acoustic, phonetic and voice education to provide information about articulatory setting (AS) and general awareness of the speech production process. The second phase used traditional articulation therapy, online visual-acoustic biofeedback and fluency strategies to target the frontal lisp directly (specifically /s/, /z/, /[esh]/ and /t[esh]/). Trained listener evaluations of pre-intervention, post-phase 1 and post-phase 2 assessments showed no improvement after phase 1, but notable improvement in all treatment targets immediately after phase 2. These improvements were substantially maintained at assessment 4 months post-intervention. The outcomes suggest that direct training was more effective than the AS approach; however, the client's ability to self-monitor in phase 2, rapid acquisition of the targets and maintenance at 4 months post-intervention possibly reflected the knowledge gained in phase 1 about AS. Global warming is amplified in the Arctic. However, numerical models struggle to represent key processes that determine Arctic weather and climate. To collect data that help to constrain the models, the HALO–(𝒜𝒞)3 aircraft campaign was conducted over the Norwegian and Greenland seas, the Fram Strait, and the central Arctic Ocean in March and April 2022. The campaign focused on one specific challenge posed by the models, namely the reasonable representation of transformations of air masses during their meridional transport into and out of the Arctic via northward moist- and warm-air intrusions (WAIs) and southward marine cold-air outbreaks (CAOs). Observations were made over areas of open ocean, the marginal sea ice zone, and the central Arctic sea ice. Two low-flying and one long-range, high-altitude research aircraft were flown in colocated formation whenever possible. To follow the air mass transformations, a quasi-Lagrangian flight strategy using trajectory calculations was realized, enabling us to sample the same moving-air parcels twice along their trajectories. Seven distinct WAI and 12 CAO cases were probed. From the quasi-Lagrangian measurements, we have quantified the diabatic heating/cooling and moistening/drying of the transported air masses. During CAOs, maximum values of 3 K h−1 warming and 0.3 g kg−1 h−1 moistening were obtained below 1 km altitude. From the observations of WAIs, diabatic cooling rates of up to 0.4 K h−1 and a moisture loss of up to 0.1 g kg−1 h−1 from the ground to about 5.5 km altitude were derived. Furthermore, the development of cloud macrophysical (cloud-top height and horizontal cloud cover) and microphysical (liquid water path, precipitation, and ice index) properties along the southward pathways of the air masses were documented during CAOs, and the moisture budget during a specific WAI event was estimated. In addition, we discuss the statistical frequency of occurrence of the different thermodynamic phases of Arctic low-level clouds, the interaction of Arctic cirrus clouds with sea ice and water vapor, and the characteristics of microphysical and chemical properties of Arctic aerosol particles. Finally, we provide a proof of concept to measure mesoscale divergence and subsidence in the Arctic using data from dropsondes released during the flights.

A comprehensive understanding of the cloud thermodynamic phase is crucial for assessing the cloud radiative effect and is a prerequisite for remote sensing retrievals of microphysical cloud properties. While previous algorithms mainly detected ice and liquid phases, there is now a growing awareness for the need to further distinguish between warm liquid, supercooled and mixed-phase clouds. To address this need, we introduce a novel method named ProPS (PRObabilistic cloud top Phase retrieval for SEVIRI), which enables cloud detection and the determination of cloud-top phase using SEVIRI (Spinning Enhanced Visible and Infrared Imager), the geostationary passive imager aboard Meteosat Second Generation. ProPS discriminates between clear sky, optically thin ice (TI) cloud, optically thick ice (IC) cloud, mixed-phase (MP) cloud, supercooled liquid (SC) cloud and warm liquid (LQ) cloud. Our method uses a Bayesian approach based on the cloud mask and cloud phase from the lidar–radar cloud product DARDAR (liDAR/raDAR). The validation of ProPS using 6 months of independent DARDAR data shows promising results: the daytime algorithm successfully detects 93 % of clouds and 86 % of clear-sky pixels. In addition, for phase determination, ProPS accurately classifies 91 % of IC, 78 % of TI, 52 % of MP, 58 % of SC and 86 % of LQ clouds, providing a significant improvement in accurate cloud-top phase discrimination compared to traditional retrieval methods.

Processed and analyzed sea surface wave characteristics derived from an up-looking acoustic Doppler current profiler (ADCP) for the period 2016–2022 are presented as a dataset available from the public open-access repository of SEA scieNtific Open data Edition (SEANOE) at https://doi.org/10.17882/96904 (Haim et al., 2022). The collected data include full two-dimensional wave fields, along with computed bulk parameters, such as wave heights, periods, and directions of propagation. The ADCP was mounted on the submerged Deep Levantine (DeepLev) mooring station located 50 km off the Israeli coast to the west of Haifa (bottom depth ∼1470 m). It meets the need for accurate and reliable in situ measurements in the eastern Mediterranean Sea as the area significantly lacks wave data compared to other Mediterranean sub-basins. The developed long-term time series of wave parameters contribute to the monitoring and analysis of the region's wave climate and the quality of wind–wave forecasting models.

Rubinstein-Taybi syndrome (RTS) is a rare genetic developmental disorder that often shows associated language delay. However, literature on language development in RTS is very limited, particularly for the period of early communicative development, when standardized testing can be minimally informative. The purpose of the current study was to present a descriptive profile of the intentional communicative acts of a 4-year-old child with RTS, both to add to the literature on the syndrome, and as an example of non-standard profiling of early communication. The child was video-recorded in a natural context with familiar conversational partners. Analyses of the videotaped interactions included rate of communication, communicative functions and modes, and discourse patterns in terms of initiation and response. The child's mean rate of communication was 6 communicative acts per minute. In terms of communicative function, assertive (commenting) communicative acts were most common, followed by directive (requests) and expressive (affective) acts. Mode of communication was less advanced than communicative function; vocalizations were the most frequent mode, although linguistic skills were emerging (signs, single words). Implications for treatment are suggested for children with development delays on the threshold between prelinguistic and one-word phases of development. (Contains 5 tables and 3 footnotes.)

Background: Ultrasound has shown promise as visual feedback in remediation of /[turned r]/.Aims: To compare treatment for [turned r] with and without ultrasound.Methods & Procedures: A Canadian English-speaking adolescent participated in a case study with a no treatment baseline, alternating treatment blocks with and without ultrasound and a final no treatment period. Outcomes & Results: Formant values and trained listener ratings of speech samples indicated improvement in /[turned r]/production, particularly after the introduction of ultrasound.Conclusions: Ultrasound appeared to facilitate the acquisition of /[turned r]/ for the participant. Large-scale studies are needed to evaluate ultrasound further. (Contains 1 table and 2 figures.)

Ultrasound has shown promise as a visual feedback tool in speech therapy. Rural clients, however, often have minimal access to new technologies. The purpose of the current study was to evaluate consultative treatment using ultrasound in rural communities. Two speech-language pathologists (SLPs) trained in ultrasound use provided consultation with ultrasound in rural British Columbia to 13 school-aged children with residual speech impairments. Local SLPs provided treatment without ultrasound before and after the consultation. Speech samples were transcribed phonetically by independent trained listeners. Eleven children showed greater gains in production of the principal target /[image omitted]/ after the ultrasound consultation. Four of the seven participants who received more consultation time with ultrasound showed greatest improvement. Individual client factors also affected outcomes. The current study was a quasi-experimental clinic-based study. Larger, controlled experimental studies are needed to provide ultimate evaluation of the consultative use of ultrasound in speech therapy. (Contains 2 figures and 4 tables.)

The increasing resolution of numerical weather prediction models makes inter-column three-dimensional (3D) radiative transport more and more important. However, 3D radiative-transfer solvers are still computationally expensive, largely preventing their use in operational weather forecasting. To address this issue, Jakub and Mayer (2015) developed the TenStream solver. It extends the well-established two-stream method to three dimensions by using 10 instead of 2 streams to describe the transport of radiative energy through Earth's atmosphere. Building upon this method, this paper presents the dynamic TenStream solver, which provides a further acceleration of the original TenStream model. Compared to traditional solvers, this speedup is achieved by utilizing two main concepts. First, radiation is not calculated from scratch every time the model is called. Instead, a time-stepping scheme is introduced to update the radiation field, based on the result from the previous radiation time step. Secondly, the model is based on incomplete solves, with just the first few steps of an iterative scheme towards convergence performed every time it is called. Essentially, the model thereby just uses the ingoing fluxes of a grid box to update its outgoing fluxes. Combined, these two approaches move radiative transfer much closer to the way advection is handled in the dynamical core of a numerical weather prediction (NWP) model, as both use previously calculated results to update their variables and thereby just require access to the neighboring values of an individual grid box, facilitating model parallelization. To demonstrate the feasibility of this new solver, we apply it to a precomputed shallow-cumulus-cloud time series and test its performance in terms of both speed and accuracy. In terms of speed, the dynamic TenStream solver is shown to be about 3 times slower than a traditional 1D δ-Eddington approximation but noticeably faster than currently available 3D solvers. To evaluate the accuracy of the dynamic TenStream solver, we compare its results as well as calculations carried out using a 1D δ-Eddington approximation and the original TenStream solver, to benchmark calculations performed with the 3D Monte Carlo solver MYSTIC. We demonstrate that at the grid box level, dynamic TenStream is able to calculate heating rates and net irradiances at domain boundaries that are very close to those obtained by the original TenStream solver, thus offering a much better representation of the MYSTIC benchmark than the 1D δ-Eddington results. By calling the dynamic TenStream solver less frequently than the δ-Eddington approximation, we furthermore show that our new solver produces significantly better results than a 1D δ-Eddington approximation carried out with a similar computational demand. At these lower calling frequencies, however, the incomplete solves in the dynamic TenStream solver also lead to a buildup of bias with time, which becomes larger the lower the calling frequency is.

Most of the dust models underestimate the load of the large dust particles, consider spherical shapes instead of irregular ones, and have to deal with a wide range of the dust refractive index (RI) to be used. This leads to an incomplete assessment of the dust radiative effects and dust-related impacts on climate and weather. The current work aims to provide an assessment, through a sensitivity study, of the limitations of models to calculate the dust direct radiative effect (DRE) due to the underrepresentation of its size, RI, and shape. We show that the main limitations stem from the size and RI, while using a more realistic shape plays only a minor role, with our results agreeing with recent findings in the literature. At the top of the atmosphere (TOA) close to dust sources, the underestimation of size issues an underestimation of the direct warming effect of dust of ∼ 18–25 W m−2, for DOD = 1 (dust optical depth) at 0.5 µm, depending on the solar zenith angle (SZA) and RI. The underestimation of the dust size in models is less above the ocean than above dust sources, resulting in an underestimation of the direct cooling effect of dust above the ocean by up to 3 W m−2, for aerosol optical depth (AOD) of 1 at 0.5 µm. We also show that the RI of dust may change its DRE by 80 W m−2 above the dust sources and by 50 W m−2 at downwind oceanic areas for DOD = 1 at 0.5 µm at TOA. These results indicate the necessity of including more realistic sizes and RIs for dust particles in dust models, in order to derive better estimations of the dust DRE, especially near the dust sources and mostly for studies dealing with local radiation effects of dust aerosols.

Surface water flooding (SWF) is a severe hazard associated with extreme convective rainfall, whose spatial and temporal sparsity belie the significant impacts it has on populations and infrastructure. Forecasting the intense convective rainfall that causes most SWF on the temporal and spatial scales required for effective flood forecasting remains extremely challenging. National-scale flood forecasts are currently issued for the UK and are well regarded amongst flood responders, but there is a need for complementary enhanced regional information. Here we present a novel SWF-forecasting method, FOREWARNS (Flood fOREcasts for Surface WAter at a RegioNal Scale), that aims to fill this gap in forecast provision. FOREWARNS compares reasonable worst-case rainfall from a neighbourhood-processed, convection-permitting ensemble forecast system against pre-simulated flood scenarios, issuing a categorical forecast of SWF severity. We report findings from a workshop structured around three historical flood events in Northern England, in which forecast users indicated they found the forecasts helpful and would use FOREWARNS to complement national guidance for action planning in advance of anticipated events. We also present results from objective verification of forecasts for 82 recorded flood events in Northern England from 2013–2022, as well as 725 daily forecasts spanning 2019–2022, using a combination of flood records and precipitation proxies. We demonstrate that FOREWARNS offers good skill in forecasting SWF risk, with high spatial hit rates and low temporal false alarm rates, confirming that user confidence is justified and that FOREWARNS would be suitable for meeting the user requirements of an enhanced operational forecast.

Cloud-radiative heating (CRH) within the atmosphere affects the dynamics and predictability of extratropical cyclones. However, CRH is uncertain in numerical weather prediction and climate models, and this could affect model predictions of extratropical cyclones. In this paper, we present a systematic quantification of CRH uncertainties. To this end, we study an idealized extratropical cyclone simulated at a convection-permitting resolution of 2.5 km and combine large-eddy-model simulations at a 300 m resolution with offline radiative transfer calculations. We quantify four factors contributing to the CRH uncertainty in different regions of the cyclone: 3D cloud-radiative effects, parameterization of ice optical properties, cloud horizontal heterogeneity, and cloud vertical overlap. The last two factors can be considered essentially resolved at 300 m but need to be parameterized at a 2.5 km resolution. Our results indicate that parameterization of ice optical properties and cloud horizontal heterogeneity are the two factors contributing most to the mean uncertainty in CRH at larger spatial scales and can be more relevant for the large-scale dynamics of the cyclone. On the other hand, 3D cloud-radiative effects are much smaller on average, especially for stratiform clouds within the warm conveyor belt of the cyclone. Our analysis in particular highlights the potential to improve the simulation of CRH by better representing ice optical properties. Future work should, in particular, address how uncertainty in ice optical properties affects the dynamics and predictability of extratropical cyclones.

Cloud radiative properties play a significant role in radiation and energy budgets and are influenced by both the cloud top height and the particle size distribution. Both cloud top heights and particle size distributions can be derived from 2-D intensity and polarization measurements by the airborne spectrometer of the Munich Aerosol Cloud Scanner (specMACS). The cloud top heights are determined using a stereographic method (Kölling et al., 2019), and the particle size distributions are derived in terms of the cloud effective radius and the effective variance from multidirectional polarized measurements of the cloudbow (Pörtge et al., 2023). In this study, the accuracy of the two methods is evaluated using realistic 3-D radiative transfer simulations of specMACS measurements of a synthetic field of shallow cumulus clouds, and possible error sources are determined. The simulations are performed with the 3-D Monte Carlo radiative transport model MYSTIC (Mayer, 2009) using cloud data from highly resolved large-eddy simulations (LESs). Both retrieval methods are applied to the simulated data and compared to the respective properties of the underlying cloud field from the LESs. Moreover, the influence of the cloud development on both methods is evaluated by applying the algorithms to idealized simulated data where the clouds did not change during the simulated overflight of 1 min over the cloud field. For the cloud top height retrieval, an absolute mean difference of less than 70 m with a standard deviation of about 130 m compared to the expected heights from the model is found. The elimination of the cloud development as a possible error source results in mean differences of (46±140) m. For the effective radius, an absolute average difference of about (-0.2±1.30) µm from the expected effective radius from the LES model input is derived for the realistic simulation and (-0.03±1.28) µm for the simulation without cloud development. The difference between the effective variance derived from the cloudbow retrieval and the expected effective variance is (0.02±0.05) for both simulations. Additional studies concerning the correlations between larger errors in the effective radius or variance and the optical thickness of the observed clouds have revealed that low values in the optical thickness do not have an impact on the accuracy of the retrieval.

The spectrometer of the Munich Aerosol Cloud Scanner (specMACS) is a high-spatial-resolution hyperspectral and polarized imaging system. It is operated from a nadir-looking perspective aboard the German High Altitude and LOng range (HALO) research aircraft and is mainly used for the remote sensing of clouds. In 2019, its two hyperspectral line cameras, which are sensitive to the wavelength range between 400 and 2500 nm, were complemented by two 2D RGB polarization-resolving cameras. The polarization-resolving cameras have a large field of view and allow for multi-angle polarimetric imaging with high angular and spatial resolution. This paper introduces the polarization-resolving cameras and provides a full characterization and calibration of them. We performed a geometric calibration and georeferencing of the two cameras. In addition, a radiometric calibration using laboratory calibration measurements was carried out. The radiometric calibration includes the characterization of the dark signal, linearity, and noise as well as the measurement of the spectral response functions, a polarization calibration, vignetting correction, and absolute radiometric calibration. With the calibration, georeferenced, absolute calibrated Stokes vectors rotated into the scattering plane can be computed from raw data. We validated the calibration results by comparing observations of the sunglint, which is a known target, with radiative transfer simulations of the sunglint.
