Abstract: This paper presents the ``First Epoch'' sample from the VIMOS VLT Deep Survey (VVDS). The VVDS goals, observations, data reduction with VIPGI, and redshift measurement with KBRED are discussed. Data have been obtained with the VIsible Multi Object Spectrograph (VIMOS) on the ESO-VLT UT3, allowing to observe ~600 slits simultaneously at R~230. A total of 11564 objects have been observed in the VVDS-02h and VVDS-CDFS Deep fields over a total area of 0.61deg^2, selected solely on the basis of apparent magnitude 17.5 1.4. The survey reaches a redshift measurement completeness of 78% overall (93% including less reliable objects), with a spatial sampling of the population of galaxies of 25% and ~30% in the VVDS-02h and VVDS-CDFS. The redshift accuracy measured from repeated observations with VIMOS and comparison to other surveys is ~276km/s. From this sample we present for the first time the redshift distribution of a magnitude limited spectroscopic sample down to IAB=24. The redshift distribution has a median of z=0.62, z=0.65, z=0.70, and z=0.76, for magnitude limited samples with IAB 23.5, probing the bright star forming population of galaxies. Abstract: {This paper presents the VIMOS VLT Deep Survey around the Chandra Deep Field South (CDFS). We have measured 1599 new redshifts with VIMOS on the European Observatory Very Large Telescope - UT3, in an area 21x21.6 arcmin^2, including 784 redshifts in the Hubble Space Telescope - Advanced Camera for Surveys GOODS area. 30% of all objects with I_AB=24 have been observed independently of magnitude, indicating that the sample is purely magnitude limited. We have reached an unprecedented completeness level of 88% in terms of the ratio of secure measurements vs. observed objects, while 95% of all objects have a redshift measurement. A total of 1452 galaxies, 139 stars, 8 QSOs have a redshift identification, 141 of these being unsecure measurements. The redshift distribution down to I_AB=24 is peaked at a median redshift z=0.73, with a significant high redshift tail extending up to ~4. Several high density peaks in the distribution of galaxies are identified. In particular, the strong peak at z=0.735 contains more than 130 galaxies in a velocity range +/-2000 km/s distributed all across the transverse ~20 h^-1 Mpc of the survey. Abstract: Using the first-epoch data from the VIMOS-VLT Deep Survey (VVDS), we investigate the evolution of the projected two-point correlation function of galaxies between z ∼ 1 and the present epoch. For the global galaxy population we do not find strong variations of clustering with redshift. However, dependence of clustering on intrinsic luminosities and stellar masses of galaxies evolves significantly during this period. We observe more close pairs for the most luminous and (less distinctly) most massive objects at z ∼ 1 as compared to what is seen locally, resulting in a non–power-law shape of their correlation function, with an upturn on small scales. This effect can be modeled within the framework of the halo occupation distribution models and leads to the conclusion that at z ∼ 1 we are possibly observing a population of luminous and not very massive satellite galaxies that occupy the most massive dark-matter halos—an effect that is not seen locally.

Abstract: The VIMOS VLT Deep Survey is enabling to trace from one single survey the star formation history in the Universe over 12 billion years of evolution. We find that the star formation rate is strongly linked to the different types of galaxies. While the Luminosity Density of irregular-like galaxies decreased by more than a factor 3.5 from z = 1.2 to z = 0.2, the LD for early-type galaxies increased by a factor 1.7. Star formation happened in several phases, strongly luminosity dependent, with star formation gradually shifting from the first massive galaxies to less massive systems. The peak in SFR at z = 3.5 is identified with the end of the mass assembly of the most luminous galaxies (M-AB(1500 angstrom) < -21). We use the SWIRE Spitzer-IRAC observations of the VVDS-02h field to assemble a flux-limited sample at 3.8 mu m of 1500 galaxies with spectroscopic redshifts and more than 22000 galaxies with photometric redshifts up to z = 2 and build the rest-frame K-band luminosity function and stellar mass density. We find that the global stellar mass density has remained relatively constant since z similar to 1, but the epoch 1 < z < 2 has seen an increase of more than a factor 10 in the stellar mass density of red galaxies selected based on the bimodal distribution of (NUV-r) colors, while in the same period blue galaxies have seen only a modest factor 2 increase. We interpret this as the fast build-up of the red sequence of galaxies, essentially complete by z similar to 1.

Abstract: Taking advantage of the efficient VIMOS multi-slit spectrograph on the VLT, we are conducting the VIMOS VLT Deep Survey (VVDS), aimed to trace the evolution of galaxies and large-scale structures over more than 90% of the life of the Universe. The VVDS is made of three magnitude selected surveys: the wide survey at IAB = 22.5, the deep survey at IAB = 24, and the ultra-deep survey at IAB = 24.75. To date, the VVDS has assembled more than 45000 redshifts in the range 0 < z ≤ 5. A number of results have been obtained, including a comprehensive view of the luminosity and stellar mass evolution as a function of galaxy type over 0 < z ≤ 2, a detailed look at the evolution of the clustering of galaxies as a function of type and environment, and a complete census of the actively star-forming galaxy population for 1.5 < z ≤ 5. This paper focuses on current highlights and on-going work from the VVDS.

Deep representative surveys of galaxies at different epochs are needed to make progress in understanding galaxy evolution. Aims. We describe the completed VIMOS VLT Deep Survey and the final data release of 35 016 galaxies and type-I AGN with measured spectro-scopic redshifts covering all epochs up to redshiftz∼6.7, in areas from 0.142 to 8.7 square degrees, and volumes from 0.5×106to 2×107h−3Mpc3. Methods. We selected samples of galaxies based solely on their i-band magnitude reaching iAB=24.75. Spectra were obtained with VIMOS on the ESO-VLT integrating 0.75 h, 4.5 h, and 18 h for the Wide, Deep, and Ultra-Deep nested surveys, respectively. We demonstrate that any “redshift desert” can be crossed successfully using spectra covering 3650 ≤λ≤9350 Å. A total of 1263 galaxies were again observed independently within the VVDS and from the VIPERS and MASSIV surveys. They were used to establish the redshift measurements reliability, to assess completeness in the VVDS sample, and to provide a weighting scheme taking the survey selection function into account. We describe the main properties of the VVDS samples, and the VVDS is compared to other spectroscopic surveys in the literature. Results. In total we have obtained spectroscopic redshifts for 34 594 galaxies, 422 type-I AGN, and 12 430 Galactic stars. The survey enabled identifying galaxies up to very high redshifts with 4669 redshifts in 1≤ z spec ≤2, 561 in 2≤z spec ≤3, and 468 with z spec >3, and specific populations like Lyman-α emitters were identified out to z = 6.62. We show that the VVDS occupies a unique place in the parameter space defined by area, depth, redshift coverage, and number of spectra. Conclusions. The VIMOS VLT Deep Survey provides a comprehensive survey of the distant universe, covering all epochs since z∼6, or more than 12 Gyr of cosmic time, with a uniform selection, which is the largest such sample to date. A wealth of science results derived from the VVDS have shed new light on the evolution of galaxies and AGN and on their distribution in space over this large cosmic time. The VVDS further demonstrates that large deep spectroscopic redshift surveys over all these epochs in the distant Universe are a key tool to observational cosmology.To enhance the legacy value of the survey, a final public release of the complete VVDS spectroscopic redshift sample is available at http://cesam.lam.fr/vvds.

Abstract: Osmotic and ionic effects of NaCl were investigated in germinating wheat. Approximately isotonic solutions of NaCl and sorbitol inhibited germination and seedling growth to similar degrees. When dry kernels were pre-imbibed in salt for 24 h and then transferred to water, germination was equivalent to that of kernels imbibed continuously in water and the development of embryos was delayed to about the same extent as kernels pre-imbibed in sorbitol for 24 h. Measurements of water uptake, respiration, biosynthetic activities and rubidium uptake in embryos dissected from grains imbibed in NaCI or sorbitol for the first 24 h demonstrated that salt supplied to dry kernels closely mimicked sorbitol in counteracting the reactivation of embryo metabolism. No toxic effects of salt were observed when dry kernels were pre-imbibed in very high NaCI concentrations for 24 h and then transferred to water, even though embryo sodium contents increased considerably. Ultrastructural observations of embryo tissue further showed that salt influx into dry grains did not produce ion-specific damage in cell organization. On the other hand, salt specific effects became evident when the 24 h salt exposure was applied to kernels pre-hydrated for 24 h and, even more, for 30 h. We conclude that in wheat the inhibition of germination by salt corresponds to that induced by an osmoticum, provided that the caryopsis has not reached the stage of germination associated with active embryo expansion.

Abstract: zCOSMOS is a large redshift survey that is being undertaken in the COSMOS field using 600 hours of observation with the VIMOS spectrograph on the 8-m VLT. The survey is designed to characterise the environments of COSMOS galaxies from the 100 kpc scales of galaxy groups up to the 100 Mpc scale of the cosmic web and to produce diagnostic information on galaxies and active galactic nuclei. The zCOSMOS survey consists of two parts: (a) zCOSMOS-bright, a magnitude-limited I-band IAB < 22.5 sample of about 20,000 galaxies with 0.1 < z < 1.2 covering the whole 1.7 deg2 COSMOS ACS field and designed to mimic the parameters of the 2dfGRS; and (b) zCOSMOS-deep, a survey of approximately 10,000 galaxies selected through colour-selection criteria to have 1.4 < z < 3.0, within the central 1 deg2. This paper describes the survey design and the construction of the target catalogues, and briefly outlines the observational program and the data pipeline. In the first observing season, spectra of 1303 zCOSMOS-bright targets and of 977 zCOSMOS-deep targets have been obtained. These are briefly analysed to demonstrate the characteristics that may be expected from zCOSMOS, and particularly zCOSMOS-bright, when it is finally completed between 2008-2009. The power of combining spectroscopic and photometric redshifts is demonstrated, especially in correctly identifying the emission line in single-line spectra and in determining which of the less reliable spectroscopic redshifts are correct and which are incorrect. Our zCOSMOS-deep spectra demonstrate the effectiveness of our selection techniques to isolate high redshift galaxies at 1.4 < z < 3.0 and of VIMOS to measure their redshifts using ultraviolet absorption lines., Comment: 24 pages plus 16 figures. Abstract: We investigate the dependence of galaxy clustering on the galaxy intrinsic luminosity at high redshift, using the data from the First Epoch VIMOS-VLT Deep Survey (VVDS). The size (6530 galaxies) and depth (I_{AB}=0.9 and median absolute magnitude -19.6< M_B < -21.3. Fitting w_p(r_p) with a single power-law model for the real-space correlation function xi(r)=(r/r_0)^{-gamma}, we measure the relationship of the correlation length r_0 and the slope gamma with the sample median luminosity for the first time at such high redshift. Values from our lower-redshift samples (0.1=-19.6) have a correlation length r_0=2.7^{+0.3}_{-0.3} h^{-1} Mpc, compared to r_0=5.0^{+1.5}_{-1.6} h^{-1} Mpc at =-21.3. Correspondingly the slope of the correlation function is observed to steepen significantly from \gamma=1.6^{+0.1}_{-0.1} to \gamma=2.4^{+0.4}_{-0.2}. This is not observed neither by large local surveys nor in our lower-redshift sample and seems to imply a significant change in the way luminous galaxies trace dark-matter halos at z~1 with respect to z~0. At our effective median redshift z~0.9 this corresponds to a strong difference of the relative bias, from b/b* < 0.7 for galaxies with L < L*, to b/b*~1.4 for galaxies with L > L*., Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomy and Astrophysics

Abstract: The VIMOS VLT Deep Survey (VVDS), designed to measure 150,000 galaxy redshifts, requires a dedicated data reduction and analysis pipeline to process in a timely fashion the large amount of spectroscopic data being produced. This requirement has lead to the development of the VIMOS Interactive Pipeline and Graphical Interface (VIPGI), a new software package designed to simplify to a very high degree the task of reducing astronomical data obtained with VIMOS, the imaging spectrograph built by the VIRMOS Consortium for the European Southern Observatory, and mounted on Unit 3 (Melipal) of the Very Large Telescope (VLT) at Paranal Observatory (Chile). VIPGI provides the astronomer with specially designed VIMOS data reduction functions, a VIMOS-centric data organizer, and dedicated data browsing and plotting tools, that can be used to verify the quality and accuracy of the various stages of the data reduction process. The quality and accuracy of the data reduction pipeline are comparable to those obtained using well known IRAF tasks, but the speed of the data reduction process is significantly increased, thanks to the large set of dedicated features. In this paper we discuss the details of the MOS data reduction pipeline implemented in VIPGI, as applied to the reduction of some 20,000 VVDS spectra, assessing quantitatively the accuracy of the various reduction steps. Abstract: We are presenting in this paper a detailed account of the methods used to compute the three-dimensional two-point galaxy correlation function in the VIMOS-VLT deep survey (VVDS). We investigate how instrumental selection effects and observational biases affect the measurements and identify the methods to correct them. We quantify the accuracy of our correction method using an ensemble of fifty mock galaxy surveys generated with the GalICS semi-analytic model of galaxy formation which incorporate the same selection biases and tiling strategy as the real data does. We demonstrate that we are able to recover the real-space two-point correlation function xi(s) to an accuracy better than 10% on scales larger than 1 h^{-1} Mpc, and of about 30% on scales below 1 h^{-1} Mpc, with the sampling strategy used for the first epoch VVDS data. Abstract: We present the first measurement of the galaxy luminosity function (LF) at 1500 Å in the range 0.2=alpha>=-1.65, with a marginally significant hint of increase at higher z. (3) We split the sample in three rest-frame (B-I) intervals, providing an approximate spectral type classification: Sb-Sd, Sd-Irr, and unobscured starbursts. We find that the bluest class evolves less strongly in luminosity than the two other classes. On the other hand, their number density increases sharply with z (~15% in the local universe to ~55% at z~1), while that of the reddest classes decreases.

Abstract: In a companion paper (Arnouts et al. 2004) we presented new measurements of the galaxy luminosity function at 1500 Angstroms out to z~1 using GALEX-VVDS observations (1039 galaxies with NUV0.2) and at higher z using existing data sets. In this paper we use the same sample to study evolution of the FUV luminosity density. We detect evolution consistent with a (1+z)^{2.5+/-0.7} rise to z~1 and (1+z)^{0.5+/-0.4} for z>1. Abstract: We have used the Vimos VLT Deep Survey in combination with other spectroscopic, photometric and X-ray surveys from literature to detect several galaxy structures in the Chandra Deep Field South (CDFS). Both a friend-of-friend based algorithm applied to the spectroscopic redshift catalog and an adaptative kernel galaxy density and colour maps correlated with photometric redshift estimates have been used. We mainly detect a chain-like structure at z=0.66 and two massive groups at z=0.735 and 1.098 showing signs of ongoing collapse. We also detect two galaxy walls at z=0.66 and at z=0.735 (extremely compact in redshift space). The first one contains the chain-like structure and the last one contains in its center one of the two massive groups. Finally, other galaxy structures that are probably loose low mass groups are detected. We compare the group galaxy population with simulations in order to assess the richness of these structures and we study their galaxy morphological contents. The higher redshift structures appear to probably have lower velocity dispersion than the nearby ones. The number of moderatly massive structures we detect is consistent with what is expected for an LCDM model, but a larger sample is required to put significant cosmological constraints., Comment: 15 pages, 17 figures, accepted in A&A

Abstract: In this paper we present the optical and near-infrared identifications of the 1054 radio sources detected in the 20 cm deep radio survey down to a 5sigma flux limit of ~80 muJy obtained with the VLA in the VIMOS VLT Deep Survey VVDS-02h deep field. Using U,B,V,R,I and K data, with limiting magnitudes of UAB~25.4, BAB~26.5, VAB~26.2, RAB~25.9 IAB~25.0, JAB~24.2, KAB~23.9 (50% completeness) we identified 718 radio sources (~74% of the whole sample). The photometric redshift analysis shows that, in each magnitude bin, the radio sample has a higher median photometric redshift than the whole optical sample, while the median (V-I)AB color of the radio sources is redder than the median color of the whole optical sample. These results suggest that radio detection is preferentially selecting galaxies with higher intrinsic optical luminosity. From the analysis of the optical properties of the radio sources as function of the radio flux, we found that while about 35% of the radio sources are optically unidentified in the higher radio flux bin (S> 1.0 mJy), the percentage of unidentified sources decreases to about 25% in the faintest bins (S< 0.5 mJy). The median IAB magnitude for the total sample of radio sources, i.e. including also the unidentified ones, is brighter in the faintest radio bins than in the bin with higher radio flux. This suggests that most of the faintest radio sources are likely to be associated to relatively lower radio luminosity objects at relatively modest redshift, rather than radio-powerful, AGN type objects at high redshift. Using a classification in early-type and late-type galaxies based on the (B-I)AB color and the photometric redshift, we found that the majority of the radio sources below ~0.15 mJy are indeed late-type star forming galaxies. Finally, the radio sources without optical counterpart in our deep imaging have a median radio flux of 0.15 mJy, equal to that of identified sources. Given the very faint optical limits, these unidentified radio sources probably contain a significant fraction of obscured and/or high redshift galaxies.

Abstract: We have conducted a deep survey (r.m.s noise 17 microJy) with the Very Large Array (VLA) at 1.4 GHz, with a resolution of 6 arcsec, of a 1 square degree region included in the VIRMOS VLT Deep Survey. In the same field we already have multiband photometry down to I(AB)=25, and spectroscopic observations will be obtained during the VIRMOS VLT survey. The homogeneous sensitivity over the whole field has allowed to derive a complete sample of 1054 radio sources (5 sigma limit). We give a detailed description of the data reduction and of the analysis of the radio observations, with particular care to the effects of clean bias and bandwidth smearing, and of the methods used to obtain the catalogue of radio sources. To estimate the effect of the resolution bias on our observations we have modelled the effective angular-size distribution of the sources in our sample and we have used this distribution to simulate a sample of radio sources. Finally we present the radio count distribution down to 0.08 mJy derived from the catalogue. Our counts are in good agreement with the best fit derived from earlier surveys, and are about 50 % higher than the counts in the HDF. 27. Counts of Optically Selected Quasars in the Magnitude Range 19<J<22

Abstract: We present the current status of a survey of faint, optically selected quasars covering 0.7 square degrees. Candidates have been selected through multicolour search, grism spectroscopy, and, to some extent, variability analysis. Slit spectroscopy for almost all the high priority candidates brighter than J=20.84 yielded 22 confirmed quasars. In the magnitude range J=21–22 our results are in very good agreement with other existing surveys. The extension of the survey on an adjacent field is in progress.

Abstract: The best durum wheat has vitreous kernels and an absence of mealy matter in the kernels, a condition known as ‘yellow berry’. Yellow berry is determined by genetic and environmental factors and, although a lot of work has been done on the effect of nitrogen supply on protein synthesis, little is known of the effects of soil phosphorus and its function in grain development. Trials showed that cultivation at altitude decreased yellow berry but rich silt clay soils increased it. It was suggested that a high phosphorus supply was required for clay soils to counteract it. In another trial reduced light levels increased mealiness and results, again, indicated that this could be counteracted by phosphorus supplied at the boot stage. A further experiment indicated that the ratio of nitrogen to phosphorus fertilization was of importance, with the lowest incidence of yellow berry being obtained with the highest level of phosphorus and the lowest level of nitrogen.

Abstract: Measurements of the growth rate of structure f at different redshifts can discriminate the origin of cosmic acceleration. Coupled to estimates of the expansion rate H(z) as provided by Type-la supernovae or Baryonic Acoustic Oscillations, accurate measurements of f(z) are able to distinguish "dark energy" models from theories with modified gravity, as, e.g., braneworld models. These two classes are degenerate when considering the expansion history alone. We have recently shown (Nature, 451 (2008) 541) that redshift-space distortions in the clustering pattern of galaxies measured from large redshift surveys represent an extremely promising technique to trace f (z) back in time. We have measured the distortion parameter beta at z similar to 0.8 using the currently largest field of the VVDS-Wide survey, that includes more than 10000 galaxy redshifts to I(AB) = 22.5 over 4 deg(2). We obtain 0 - 0.70 +/- 0.26, corresponding to a growth rate f = 0.91 +/- 0.36, consistent with the simplest cosmological-constant scenario. Error bars are still large compared with the difference among models. However, next-generation deep surveys with N > 100000 redshifts over similar to 100deg(2) or larger, will be able to use this test as an accurate probe of the origin of cosmic acceleration.

Abstract: We present a detailed analysis of the Galaxy Stellar Mass Function of galaxies up to z=2.5 as obtained from the VVDS. We estimate the stellar mass from broad-band photometry using 2 different assumptions on the galaxy star formation history and show that the addition of secondary bursts to a continuous star formation history produces systematically higher (up to 40%) stellar masses. At low redshift (z=0.2) we find a substantial population of low-mass galaxies (10^8 Msun at z=1), and a mild mass-dependent average evolution (`mass-downsizing'). In particular our data are consistent with mild/negligible (6x10^10 Msun). For less massive systems the no-evolution scenario is excluded. A large fraction (>=50%) of massive galaxies have been already assembled and converted most of their gas into stars at z=1, ruling out the `dry mergers' as the major mechanism of their assembly history below z=1. This fraction decreases to 33% at z=2. Low-mass systems have decreased continuously in number and mass density (by a factor up to 4) from the present age to z=2, consistently with a prolonged mass assembly also at z, 20 pages with 12 encapsulated figures. Abstract: We discuss the evolution of clustering of galaxies in the Universe from the present epoch back to z ~ 2, using the first-epoch data from the VIMOS-VLT Deep Survey (VVDS). We present the evolution of the projected two-point correlation function of galaxies for the global galaxy population, as well as its dependence on galaxy intrinsic luminosities and spectral types. While we do not find strong variations of the correlation function parameters with redshift for the global galaxy population, the clustering of objects with different intrinsic luminosities evolved significantly during last 8-10 billion years. Our findings indicate that bright galaxies in the past traced higher density peaks than they do now and that the shape of the correlation function of most luminous galaxies is different from observed for their local counterparts, which is a supporting evidence of a non-trivial evolution of the galaxy vs. dark matter bias., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, to appear in the proceedings of the conference 'At the Edge of the Universe' (9-13 October 2006, Sintra, Portugal)

Abstract: Observations of distant supernovae indicate that the Universe is now in a phase of accelerated expansion the physical cause of which is a mystery. Formally, this requires the inclusion of a term acting as a negative pressure in the equations of cosmic expansion, accounting for about 75 per cent of the total energy density in the Universe. The simplest option for this 'dark energy' corresponds to a 'cosmological constant', perhaps related to the quantum vacuum energy. Physically viable alternatives invoke either the presence of a scalar field with an evolving equation of state, or extensions of general relativity involving higher-order curvature terms or extra dimensions. Although they produce similar expansion rates, different models predict measurable differences in the growth rate of large-scale structure with cosmic time. A fingerprint of this growth is provided by coherent galaxy motions, which introduce a radial anisotropy in the clustering pattern reconstructed by galaxy redshift surveys. Here we report a measurement of this effect at a redshift of 0.8. Using a new survey of more than 10,000 faint galaxies, we measure the anisotropy parameter beta = 0.70 +/- 0.26, which corresponds to a growth rate of structure at that time of f = 0.91 +/- 0.36. This is consistent with the standard cosmological-constant model with low matter density and flat geometry, although the error bars are still too large to distinguish among alternative origins for the accelerated expansion. The correct origin could be determined with a further factor-of-ten increase in the sampled volume at similar redshift.

Abstract: To understand the evolution of galaxies, we need to know as accurately as possible how many galaxies were present in the Universe at different epochs. Galaxies in the young Universe have hitherto mainly been identified using their expected optical colours, but this leaves open the possibility that a significant population remains undetected because their colours are the result of a complex mix of stars, gas, dust or active galactic nuclei. Here we report the results of a flux-limited I-band survey of galaxies at look-back times of 9 to 12 billion years. We find 970 galaxies with spectroscopic redshifts between 1.4 and 5. This population is 1.6 to 6.2 times larger than previous estimates, with the difference increasing towards brighter magnitudes. Strong ultraviolet continua (in the rest frame of the galaxies) indicate vigorous star formation rates of more than 10-100 solar masses per year. As a consequence, the cosmic star formation rate representing the volume-averaged production of stars is higher than previously measured at redshifts of 3 to 4.
