Abstract

In this paper, the R-functions method is used for the first time to study the stability and vibrations of porous functionally graded (FG) sandwich plates with a complex geometric shape. It is assumed that the face layers of the plate are made of functionally graded materials, and the middle layer is isotropic, namely ceramic. Differential equations of motion were obtained using the first-order shear deformation theory with a given shear coefficient (FSDT). Two models of porosity distribution according to the power (P-law) and sigmoid (S-law) laws were studied. Analytical expressions for calculating the effective mechanical characteristics of functionally graded materials with even and uneven porosity distribution were obtained. Proposed approach takes into account the fact that the subcritical state of the plate can be heterogeneous, and therefore, first of all, the stresses in the middle plane of the plate are determined, and then the eigenvalue problem is solved in order to find the critical load. To determine the critical load and plate frequencies, the Ritz method combined with the R-functions theory was used. Developed algorithms and software are tested on case studies and compared with known results obtained by another methods. A number of problems of stability and vibrations of the porous functionally graded sandwich plates with a complex geometric shape for various layer arrangement schemes, various boundary conditions and laws of porosity distribution have been solved.

2. The Diversity of Spotted Fever Group Rickettsia Found in Ixodidae Hard Ticks Removed from Humans in Karachay-Cherkessia, North Caucasus, Russia

Abstract

Karachay-Cherkessia is the region in the Russian Federation that has been overlooked in terms of research on the human bacterial pathogens transmitted by ticks. In this study, we investigated the infection status of ticks with Rickettsia, Borrelia, Coxiella burmetii, Anaplasma phagocytophilum, and Ehrlichia chaffeensis/Ehrlichia muris associated with natural focal infections in Karachay-Cherkessia. A total amount of 159 ticks from three species across three genera (Ixodes ricinus, Dermacentor marginatus, Hyalomma scupense) removed from humans were collected for analysis. Additionally, we used 53 individual ticks and 40 tick pools from the vegetation of three species (I. ricinus, D. marginatus, and Rhipicephalus bursa). Screening of the studied pathogens was performed by using commercial qPCR kits. Sanger sequencing utilizing partial sequences of gltA and ompA genes was employed to identify the Rickettsia species. Our findings revealed the presence of DNA from five species within the spotted fever group Rickettsia, namely Rickettsia raoultii, R. slovaca, R. helvetica, R. monacensis, and R. aeschlimannii. Moreover, two distinct genotypes were identified within R. aeschlimannii, R. helvetica, and R. monacensis. Additionally, DNA from Borrelia burgdoferi s.l., B. miyamotoi, and A. phagocytophilum was detected in the tested ticks. This study provides valuable insights into the prevalence and the diversity of bacterial pathogens transmitted by ticks in the Karachay-Cherkessia region.

Abstract

International audience; Substantial experimental and theoretical efforts worldwide are devoted to explore the phase diagram of strongly interacting matter. At LHC and top RHIC energies, QCD matter is studied at very high temperatures and nearly vanishing net-baryon densities. There is evidence that a Quark-Gluon-Plasma (QGP) was created at experiments at RHIC and LHC. The transition from the QGP back to the hadron gas is found to be a smooth cross over. For larger net-baryon densities and lower temperatures, it is expected that the QCD phase diagram exhibits a rich structure, such as a first-order phase transition between hadronic and partonic matter which terminates in a critical point, or exotic phases like quarkyonic matter. The discovery of these landmarks would be a breakthrough in our understanding of the strong interaction and is therefore in the focus of various high-energy heavy-ion research programs. The Compressed Baryonic Matter (CBM) experiment at FAIR will play a unique role in the exploration of the QCD phase diagram in the region of high net-baryon densities, because it is designed to run at unprecedented interaction rates. High-rate operation is the key prerequisite for high-precision measurements of multi-differential observables and of rare diagnostic probes which are sensitive to the dense phase of the nuclear fireball. The goal of the CBM experiment at SIS100 ( $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=$ 2.7--4.9 GeV) is to discover fundamental properties of QCD matter: the phase structure at large baryon-chemical potentials ( $\mu_B > 500$ MeV), effects of chiral symmetry, and the equation of state at high density as it is expected to occur in the core of neutron stars. In this article, we review the motivation for and the physics programme of CBM, including activities before the start of data taking in 2024, in the context of the worldwide efforts to explore high-density QCD matter.

Abstract

CMOS Monolithic Active Pixel Sensors (MAPS) are considered as an emerging technology in the field of charged particle tracking. They will be used in the vertex detectors of experiments like STAR, CBM and ALICE and are considered for the ILC and the tracker of ATLAS. In those applications, the sensors are exposed to sizeable radiation doses. While the tolerance of MAPS to ionizing radiation and fast hadrons is well known, the damage caused by low energy neutrons was not studied so far. Those slow neutrons may initiate nuclear fission of $^{10}$B dopants found in the B-doped silicon active medium of MAPS. This effect was expected to create an unknown amount of radiation damage beyond the predictions of the NIEL (Non Ionizing Energy Loss) model for pure silicon. We estimate the impact of this effect by calculating the additional NIEL created by this fission. Moreover, we show first measured data for CMOS sensors which were irradiated with cold neutrons. The empirical results contradict the prediction of the updated NIEL model both, qualitatively and quantitatively: The sensors irradiated with slow neutrons show an unexpected and strong acceptor removal, which is not observed in sensors irradiated with MeV neutrons., This is an author-created, un-copyedited version of an article published in Journal of Statistical Mechanics: Theory and Experiment. Abstract

Due to their low noise, CMOS Monolithic Active Pixel Sensors are suited to sense X-rays with a few keV quantum energy, which is of interest for high resolution X-ray imaging. Moreover, the good energy resolution of the silicon sensors might be used to measure this quantum energy. Combining both features with the good spatial resolution of CMOS sensors opens the potential to build ``color sensitive" X-ray cameras. Taking such colored images is hampered by the need to operate the CMOS sensors in a single photon counting mode, which restricts the photon flux capability of the sensors. More importantly, the charge sharing between the pixels smears the potentially good energy resolution of the sensors. Based on our experience with CMOS sensors for charged particle tracking, we studied techniques to overcome the latter by means of an offline processing of the data obtained from a CMOS sensor prototype. We found that the energy resolution of the pixels can be recovered at the expense of reduced quantum efficiency. We will introduce the results of our study and discuss the feasibility of taking colored X-ray pictures with CMOS sensors.

Abstract

CMOS Monolithic Active Pixel Sensors (MAPS) demonstrated excellent performances in the field of charged particle tracking. Among their strong points are an single point resolution few μm, a light material budget of 0.05% X0 in combination with a good radiation tolerance and high rate capability. Those features make the sensors a valuable technology for vertex detectors of various experiments in heavy ion and particle physics. To reduce the load on the event builders and future mass storage systems, we have developed algorithms suited for preprocessing and reducing the data streams generated by the MAPS. This real-time processing employs remaining free resources of the FPGAs of the readout controllers of the detector and complements the on-chip data reduction circuits of the MAPS.

Abstract

CMOS Monolithic Active Pixel Sensors (MAPS) demonstrated excellent performances in the field of charged particle tracking. They feature an excellent single point resolution of few μm, a light material budget of 0.05% Xo in combination with a good radiation tolerance and time resolution. This makes the sensors a valuable technology for micro vertex detectors (MVD) of various experiments in heavy ion and particle physics like STAR and CBM. State of the art MAPS are equipped with a rolling shutter readout. Therefore, the data of one individual event is typically found in more than one data train generated by the sensor. This paper presents a concept to introduce this feature in both simulation and data analysis, taking profit of the sensor topology of the MVD. This topology allows to use for massive parallel data streaming and handling strategies within the FairRoot framework.

Abstract

CMOS Monolithic Active Pixel Sensors (MAPS) have demonstrated excellent performance as tracking detectors for charged particles. They provide an outstanding spatial resolution (a few μm), a detection efficiency of 99.9%, very low material budget (0.05% X0) and good radiation tolerance ( 1 Mrad, 1014 neq/cm2) [1]. This recommends them as an interesting technology for various applications in heavy ion and particle physics. For the vertex detectors of CBM and ALICE, we are aiming at developing large scale sensors with an integration time of 30μs. Reaching this goal is eased by features available in CMOS-processes with 0.18μm feature size. To exploit this option, some sensor designs have been migrated from the previously used 0.35μm processes to this novel process. We report about our first findings with the devices obtained with a focus on noise and the tolerance to ionizing radiation.

The differences in carcinogenic and mutagenic actions of the substances under study are not relative to the rate of their oxidation in the enzymatic system.

Abstract

The content of benz (a)pyrene (BP) in some tars and the carcinogenic effect of the ointment, Locacorten-Tar, has been investigated in our laboratory. The determination of BP was performed by the spectrofluorescence technique based on Shpolsky's effect in frozen crystalline solution of normal paraffins. The concentration of BP in wood tars varied from 0 to 338.2 μg/g, whereas that of BP in coal tars is about 15 times higher (5,000μg/g). In Locacorten-Tar it was 225 μg/g. Locacorten-Tar ointment was tested in C57 X CBA mice by skin application. By the end of the treatment (after one year) all surviving animals had malignant skin tumours (carcinomas and sarcomas), which metastasized and were transplantable. BP estimation can apparently serve as an indicator of the carcinogenicity of tars and ointments. The determination of its content may serve as one of the criteria for selecting constituent compounds for ointments. A la fin du traitement (un an), tous les animaux survivants portaient des tumeurs malignes de la peau (epitheliomas et sarcomes) qui produisaient des metastases et pouvaient ětre transplantees. On peut se rendre compte de la carcinogenicite des goudrons et des pommades en determinant leur teneur en BP, qui peut donc servir de critere pour le choix des elements qui entreront dans la composition des pommades.

Abstract

Experiments with mice showed that an aqueous extract of barley grain which had been attacked by Fusarium sporotrichioides is blastogenie. There was a significant association between tumour-bearing and alpha-foetoprotein when a sensitive immunoautoradiographic method was used. The chromatographic examination confirmed that the Rf value and the colour of fluorescence of the extracts of grain infected with Fusarium sporotrichioides were substantially different from the aflatoxins used as controls or produced by Aspergillus flavus.

Abstract

Tumours were induced in CBA mice or (C57BL X CBA)F1 hybrids by the application of benz(a)pyrene (BP), 6-methylBP, 6-formylBP or 7,12-dimethylbenzanthracene (DMBA) to the skin. 7,8-benzoflavone (BF) used in combination with the mentioned agents decreased the carcinogenic action of methyl-substituted hydrocarbons--DMBA and 6-methylBP and had no effect on the carcinogenic action of BP and 6-formylBP. It is suggested that the inhibitory action of BF on carcinogenesis induced by methyl-substituted hydrocarbons was due to the inhibited oxidation of the methyl group.

Abstract

Experiments used 409 male CBA mice to study the effect of ascorbic acid on carcinogenesis induced by treatment with such precursors of nitroso compounds as sodium nitrite and morpholine. The former was given with feed in a total dose of 573-891 mg/animal and the latter--with drinking water in a total dose of 138-183 mg/animal. As a result, the total number of tumor-bearers grew from 63.8% (controls) to 82.5%. Treatment with all doses of ascorbic acid tested (1.5; 0.25 and 0.025% with drinking water) was followed by reduction in frequency of tumors in animals treated with nitroso compound precursors to 37.9, 55.1 and 60%, respectively.

Abstract

Carcinogenicity of the extract of "unorganized" emission of coke-oven batteries of the coke and by-product processes, 15 polycyclic hydrocarbons (PAH), solution of 4 carcinogenic PAH and benz(a)pyrene (BP) was studied in longterm experiments on (CBAXC57Bl/6)F1 hybrid mice. 1.5 ml of olive oil containing 1 mg of BP or the respective amount of PAH proportionally to their content in the extract were administered to each mouse. The sarcomas developed in 46.6% of mice which had received injections of the extract and in 95 to 100% of mice which had received injection of PAH and BP solution. Thus, the results demonstrated that besides carcinogenic PAH the emissions contain substances which inhibit the tumour development. Our data confirm a possibility of using BP as an indicator in the evaluation of carcinogenicity of industrial emission discharges of the coke and by-product processes.

Carcinogenic risk of small doses of precursors of nitroso compounds, i.e. sodium nitrite (total dose in 0.2-2.0 g/mouse in drinking water) and morpholine (total dose is 0.23 g/mouse in bread) was studied in 520 CBA and 290 C57Bl mice during 96 weeks. It is shown that under these conditions the carcinogenic effect was more pronounced in CBA mice: there was a significant increase in general incidence of tumours, particularly liver tumours and hemoblastoses in CBA females and malignant liver tumours in CBA males.

Abstract

CBA female mice received weekly subcutaneous injections of 1,2-dimethylhydrazine (1,2-DMH) in a dose of 8 mg/kg for 10 weeks (group 1). In groups 2,3 and 4 1,2-DMH plus estradiol dipropionate were administered for 10, 20 or 25 weeks, respectively. The incidence of uterine sarcoma in groups 1, 2, 3 and 4 was 3.3, 2.5, 65.4 and 73%, respectively. The mice given estradiol dipropionate alone developed no uterine sarcomas. Possible mechanisms of the uterine sarcomogenesis stimulation by estrogen are discussed.

Abstract

The results of combined treatment of CBA female mice with 1,2-dimethylhydrazine (DMH) and estradiol dipropionate (EP) are discussed in terms of a two-stage carcinogenesis hypothesis. 20% of mice treated with DMH alone developed uterine sarcomas. EP given after the cessation of DMH-treatment increased sarcoma incidence as high as 60.6% (5 micrograms EP) or 66.7% (10 micrograms EP) and significantly decreased the time of the first tumour appearance. From the standpoint of the two-stage carcinogenesis it is considered possible for EP to influence the tumour-initiating stage.

Abstract

Tumors were induced in CBA mice or (C57BL×CBA)F1 hybrids by application of benzo-(a) pyrene (BP), 6-methyl-BP, 6-formyl-BP, or 7,12-dimethylbenz (a) anthracene (DMBA) to the dorsal skin. If 7,8-benzoflavone (BF) was mixed with the above compounds it reduced the carcinogenic action of the methyl-substituted hydrocarbons (DMBA and 6-methyl-BP) but did not affect the carcinogenic action of BP itself or of 6-formyl-BP. The inhibitory action of BF on carcinogenesis induced by methyl-substituted hydrocarbons is due, it can tentatively be suggested, to inhibition of oxidation of the methyl group.
