1. Reduced sensorimotor beta dynamics could represent a 'slowed movement state' in healthy individuals

Abstract: Beta oscillations (~13-30 Hz) recorded from the sensorimotor cortex have canonical amplitude changes during movement. Specifically, a movement-related beta decrease (MRBD) occurs before movement, and a post-movement beta rebound (PMBR) follows. We investigated how the MRBD and PMBR vary with movement speed. Individuals performed a task with blocks that generated longer reaction times (RTs) and shorter RTs (Slow and Fast blocks, respectively) while scalp-electroencephalography (EEG) was recorded. The timing of task events before movement was also modulated to generate blocks with certain and uncertain timing (Fixed and Varied blocks, respectively). Beta modulation was reduced in Slow blocks compared to Fast blocks (i.e., a less negative MRBD and less positive PMBR). For the movement certainty manipulation, we saw mixed behavioral and EEG results. Our primary findings align with previous work which has shown reduced movement-related beta modulation in patients with Parkinson’s disease. We propose that a “slowed movement state”, whether it is experimentally induced or a manifestation of Parkinson’s disease bradykinesia, is represented through reduced beta dynamics. Altogether, the MRBD and PMBR may represent motor speed on a continuum with Parkinson’s disease as an extreme example of slowed movement.

Abstract: International audience; The Polarized Instrument for Long-wavelength Observation of the Tenuous interstellar medium (PILOT) is a balloon-borne experiment that aims to measure the polarized emission of thermal dust at a wavelength of 240 µm (1.2 THz). A first PILOT flight of the experiment took place from Timmins, Ontario, Canada, in September 2015 and a second flight took place from Alice Springs, Australia in April 2017. In this paper, we present the inflight performance of the instrument. Here we concentrate on the instrument performance as measured during the second flight, but refer to the performance observed during the first flight, if it was significantly different. We present a short description of the instrument and the flights. We measure the time constants of the detectors using the decay of the observed signal during flight following high energy particle impacts (glitches) and switching off the instrument's internal calibration source. We use these time constants to deconvolve the timelines and analyze the optical quality of the instrument as measured on planets. We then analyze the structure and polarization of the instrumental background. We measure the detector response flat field and its time variations using the signal from the residual atmosphere and from the internal calibration source. Finally, we analyze the spectral and temporal properties of the detector noise. The inflight performance is found to be satisfactory and globally in line with expectations from ground calibrations. We conclude by assessing the expected inflight sensitivity of the instrument in light of the measured inflight performance.

Abstract: PILOT is a balloon borne experiment, which will measure the polarized emission of dust grains, in the interstellar medium, in the sub millimeter range (with two photometric channels centered at 240 and 550 μm). The primary and secondary mirror must be positioned with accuracies better than 0.6 mm and 0.06°. These tolerances include environmental conditions (mainly gravity and thermo-elastic effects), uncertainties on alignments, and uncertainties on the dilatation coefficient. In order to respect these tolerances, we need precise characterization of each optical component. The characterization of the primary mirror and the integrated instrument is performed using a dedicated submillimeter test bench. A brief description of the scientific objectives and instrumental concept is given in the first part. We present, in the second and in the third part, the status of these ground tests, first results and planned tests.

Abstract: International audience; PILOT (Polarized Instrument for the Long-wavelength Observations of the Tenuous ISM), is a balloon-borne astronomy experiment dedicated to study the polarization of dust emission from the diffuse ISM in our Galaxy [1]. The observations of PILOT have two major scientific objectives. Firstly, they will allow us to constrain the large-scale geometry of the magnetic field in our Galaxy and to study in details the alignment properties of dust grains with respect to the magnetic field. In this domain, the measurements of PILOT will complement those of the Planck satellite at longer wavelengths. In particular, they will bring information at a better angular resolution, which is critical in crowded regions such as the Galactic plane. They will allow us to better understand how the magnetic field is shaping the ISM material on large scale in molecular clouds, and the role it plays in the gravitational collapse leading to star formation. Secondly, the PILOT observations will allow us to measure for the first time the polarized dust emission towards the most diffuse regions of the sky, where the measurements are the most easily interpreted in terms of the physics of dust. In this particular domain, PILOT will play a role for future CMB missions similar to that played by the Archeops experiment for Planck. The results of PILOT will allow us to gain knowledge about the magnetic properties of dust grains and about the structure of the magnetic field in the diffuse ISM that is necessary to a precise foreground subtraction in future polarized CMB measurements. The PILOT measurements, combined with those of Planck at longer wavelengths, will therefore allow us to further constrain the dust models. The outcome of such studies will likely impact the instrumental and technical choices for the future space missions dedicated to CMB polarization. The PILOT instrument will allow observations in two photometric channels at wavelengths 240 μm and 550 μm, with an angular resolution of a few arcminutes. We will make use of large format bolometer arrays, developed for the PACS instrument on board the Herschel satellite. With 1024 detectors per photometric channel and photometric band optimized for the measurement of dust emission, PILOT is likely to become the most sensitive experiment for this type of measurements. The PILOT experiment will take advantage of the large gain in sensitivity allowed by the use of large format, filled bolometer arrays at frequencies more favorable to the detection of dust emission. This paper presents the optical design, optical characterization and its performance. We begin with a presentation of the instrument and the optical system and then we summarise the main optical tests performed. In section III, we present preliminary end-to-end test results.

Abstract: PILOT is a balloon-borne astronomy experiment designed to study the polarization of dust emission in the diffuse interstellar medium in our Galaxy at wavelengths 240 and 550 µm with an angular resolution of about two arc-min. PILOT optics is composed of an off-axis Gregorian telescope and a refractive re-imager system. All these optical elements, except the primary mirror, are in a cryostat cooled to 3K. We used optical and 3D measurements combined with thermo-elastic modeling to perform the optical alignment. This paper describes the system analysis, the alignment procedure, and finally the performances obtained during the first flight in September 2015

Abstract: International audience; The Polarized Instrument for Long‐wavelength Observation of the Tenuous interstellar medium (PILOT) is a balloon‐borne astronomy experiment designed to study the linear polarization of thermal dust emission in two photometric bands centred at wavelengths 240 mu m (1.2 THz) and 550 mu m (545 GHz), with an angular resolution of a few arcminutes. Several end‐to‐end tests of the instrument were performed on the ground between 2012 and 2014, in order to prepare for the first scientific flight of the experiment that took place in September 2015 from Timmins, Ontario, Canada. This paper presents the results of those tests, focussing on an evaluation of the instrument's optical performance. We quantify image quality across the extent of the focal plane, and describe the tests that we conducted to determine the focal plane geometry, the optimal focus position, and sources of internal straylight. We present estimates of the detector response, obtained using an internal calibration source, and estimates of the background intensity and background polarization.

Abstract: In spite of great research efforts on Li–S batteries in aprotic organic electrolytes, there have been very few studies showing the potential application of this system in aqueous electrolyte. Herein, we explore this option and report on a cheaper and safer new aqueous system coupling a well-known cathode material in Li-ion batteries (i.e. LiMn2O4) with a dissolved polysulfide anode. In comparison with classical Li–S batteries containing aprotic organic solvents, the aqueous electrolyte offers a stable cycling profile over 100 cycles with faster C-regime.

Abstract: International audience; In-situ techniques proved to be exceptionally useful tools to understand electrode materials for Li-ion batteries but in-situ neutron diffraction (ND) during battery operation knew a slow development, due to the intrinsic difficulties it held. We have designed a new electrochemical cell, manufactured with a completely neutron-transparent (Ti,Zr) alloy. Such a cell is able to combine, for the first time, good electrochemical properties and the ability to collect neutron diffraction patterns operando, with good statistics and no other Bragg peaks than those of the electrode material of interest. This allows detailed structural determinations of electrode materials by Rietveld refinement during operation. First case studies hereby reported are the olivine LiFePO4 and the overstoichiometric spinel Li1.1Mn1.9O4, investigated at the D20 diffractometer of ILL (Grenoble), and compared to pure powder patterns obtained from the high-resolution D2B diffractometer. These studies demonstrate the feasibility and reliability of such experiments and open the field to a wide range of investigations on battery electrode materials.

Abstract: PILOT is a stratospheric experiment designed to measure the polarization of dust FIR emission, towards the diffuse interstellar medium. The first PILOT flight was carried out from Timmins in Ontario-Canada on September 20th 2015. The flight has been part of a launch campaign operated by the CNES, which has allowed to launch 4 experiments, including PILOT. The purpose of this paper is to describe the performance of the instrument in flight and to perform a first comparison with those achieved during ground tests. The analysis of the flight data is on-going, in particular the identification of instrumental systematic effects, the minimization of their impact and the quantification of their remaining effect on the polarization data. At the end of this paper, we shortly illustrate the quality of the scientific observations obtained during this first flight, at the current stage of systematic effect removal.

Abstract: Li-ion batteries are invaluable for portable electronics and vehicle electrification. A better knowledge of compositional variations within the electrodes during battery operation is, however, still needed to keep improving their performance. Although essential in the medical field, magnetic resonance imaging of solid paramagnetic battery materials is challenging due to the short lifetime of their signals. Here we develop the scanning image-selected in situ spectroscopy approach, using the strongest commercially available magnetic field gradient. We demonstrate the 7Li magnetic resonance spectroscopic image of a 5 mm-diameter operating battery with a resolution of 100 μm. The time-resolved image-spectra enable the visualization in situ of the displacement of lithiation fronts inside thick paramagnetic electrodes during battery operation. Such observations are critical to identify the key limiting parameters for high-capacity and fast-cycling batteries. This non-invasive technique also offers opportunities to study devices containing paramagnetic materials while operating., Magnetic resonance imaging is a promising non-invasive approach to visualize paramagnetic materials in devices, but the short lifetime of signals currently limits its use. Here, the authors develop an approach which overcomes this hurdle to spectroscopically image lithiation fronts during battery operation.

Abstract: Future cosmology space missions will concentrate on measuring the polarization of the Cosmic Microwave Background, which potentially carries invaluable information about the earliest phases of the evolution of our universe. Such ambitious projects will ultimately be limited by the sensitivity of the instrument and by the accuracy at which polarized foreground emission from our own Galaxy can be subtracted out. We present the PILOT balloon project, which aims at characterizing one of these foreground sources, the polarized continuum emission by dust in the diffuse interstellar medium. The PILOT experiment also constitutes a test-bed for using multiplexed bolometer arrays for polarization measurements. This paper presents the instrument and its expected performances. Performance measured during ground calibrations of the instrument and in flight will be described in a forthcoming paper.

Abstract: Resume Ces deux dernieres decennies ont permis de voir apparaitre de nouveaux traitements medicaux ou chirurgicaux revolutionnant la prise en charge de l’incontinence urinaire feminine non neurologique. De nombreuses etudes souvent prospectives randomisees, avec des reculs suffisants, ont permis de valider les bons choix therapeutiques en dehors des effets de mode et des pressions commerciales. L’Association Francaise d’Urologie, par le biais de son Comite d’Urologie et de Pelviperineologie de la Femme, propose ses recommandations. Celles-ci ont ete etablies par un groupe d’experts des specialites concernees (Urologues, Gynecologues, Reeducateurs), a partir d’une revue de la litterature, mais en tenant compte des pratiques quotidiennes universitaires et liberales. Entre Evidence Base Medicine et realite du terrain, ces recommandations essayent de proposer des attitudes realistes et applicables.

14. Recommandations pour la prise en charge rééducative de l’incontinence urinaire non neurologique de la femme

Abstract: Pelvic floor rehabilitation is prescribed as first-line treatment for women with stress urinary incontinence, particularly in cases of urinary incontinence with no first-degree uterine prolapse, with poor-quality perineal testing results or inverted perineal command. Prescription of 15 sessions should suffice to evaluate the possibilities of improving the incontinence. The sessions can be continued if the patient feels she is progressing but has not reached sufficient results. With no progression despite properly conducted rehabilitation, the question of whether to continue the physical therapy arises. Currently, therapists determine the number of sessions. They are better apt to know whether sessions should be pursued and should relay a report to the prescribing physician. This type of rehabilitation is within the domain of physical therapists. Midwives can be responsible for postpartum rehabilitation. On the other hand, the importance of the patient's role in the results and their maintenance is well known. Occasionally a few sessions some time after the initial sessions can serve to verify the acquisitions and motivate the patient in her personal contribution to this rehabilitation. The work of the physical therapist cannot be substituted with Keat-type home electrostimulation. The physical therapist plays an important role in the overall management of this condition. Currently, in absence of demonstrated efficacy, self-administration of electrostimulation is not recommended. In urge incontinence, the rehabilitation approach will be used concomitantly with prescription of anticholergics with behavioral therapy and bladder biofeedback work. In addition, low-frequency electrostimulation can be done during the session. Starting with 10-12 sessions is sufficient. In all cases, rehabilitation should take a multidisciplinary approach and be integrated into a medical and/or surgical management plan.

15. Prise en charge neurochirurgicale de la paraplégie tuberculeuse : à propos de six cas

Abstract: Tuberculosis is a rare disease in economically developed countries. Paraplegia is one of its severe complications, occurring in cases of spondylodiscitis with compressive epiduritis and/or pathological fracture of vertebral bodies with subacute kyphosis. Six patients aged 15–75 years were treated in our department from May 2005 to April 2006 by the same operator (L.N.) for paraplegia complicating Pott's disease. Patients’ neurologic function at admission and their outcomes three and 12 months after surgery were graded using the Frankel classification. MRI showed a single lesion in five cases and skip lesions in one case. Standard antituberculosis chemotherapy was started immediately within the first week of admission in five patients following a 12-month regimen. Principles of surgical treatment were ventral spinal cord decompression (with or without dorsal stage procedure), immediate grafting, correction of subacute spinal deformity and instrumentation in all cases. The diagnosis of Mycobacterium tuberculosis was confirmed by laboratory investigations in four cases and by histopathological examination in all cases. One patient who had undergone prior isolated laminectomy performed by an on call team presented neurological deterioration and progressive kyphosis. Neurological outcome improved in five patients. Four of them were able to walk unaided within the first three months after surgery. No perioperative complication occurred. In paraplegia complicating vertebral tuberculosis, overall neurological outcome appeared to be good in case of delayed emergency surgical management combined with antituberculosis chemotherapy.

Abstract: ArTeMiS is a bolometer camera that will be installed at the APEX submillimeter telescope in Chile in 2010. This instrument will be a powerful tool for scientists with its three focal planes that will operate simultaneously in background limited conditions at 200, 350 and 450 microns (5760 pixels in total). A prototype called p-ArTeMiS has been tested at APEX in 2007 and thanks to its good performances, the team has been able to conduct scientific projects in star formation and on debris disks. This paper summarises the details of the ArTeMiS project, with a description of the detectors, the optics, the cryogenics and the electronics. We will also present the undergoing studies at CEA on detectors for the future submillimeter space missions.

Abstract: International audience; New techniques in microelectronics allow to build large arrays of bolometers filling the focal plane of submillimeter and millimeter telescopes. The expected sensitivity increase is the key for the next generation of space experiments in this wavelength range. Superconducting bolometers offer currently the best prospects in terms of sensitivity and multiplexed readout. We present here the developments led in France based on NbSi alloy thermometers. The manufacturing process of a 23 pixel array and the test setup are described.

Abstract: Batteries for electrical storage are central to any future alternative energy paradigm. The ability to probe the redox mechanisms occurring at electrodes during their operation is essential to improve battery performances. Here we present the first report on Electron Paramagnetic Resonance operando spectroscopy and in situ imaging of a Li-ion battery using Li2Ru0.75Sn0.25O3, a high-capacity (>270 mAh g−1) Li-rich layered oxide, as positive electrode. By monitoring operando the electron paramagnetic resonance signals of Ru5+ and paramagnetic oxygen species, we unambiguously prove the formation of reversible (O2)n− species that contribute to their high capacity. In addition, we visualize by imaging with micrometric resolution the plating/stripping of Li at the negative electrode and highlight the zones of nucleation and growth of Ru5+/oxygen species at the positive electrode. This efficient way to locate ‘electron’-related phenomena opens a new area in the field of battery characterization that should enable future breakthroughs in battery research., It is important as well as challenging to in situ probe redox mechanisms occurring at battery electrodes. Here, the authors develop an in situ electron paramagnetic resonance imaging technique and provide measurements on the nucleation growth of the anionic and cationic redox species at a battery electrode.

Abstract: A three-dimensional model is proposed to describe single electron charging into the nanocrystals that compose the floating gate of a metal-oxide-semiconductor transistor. It is built on the physical and geometrical parameters of the device. If the nanocrystals have a cylindrical symmetry, the 3D approach can be analytically reduced to a 2D model. Different effects that play an important part on single electron charging, such as the electrostatic coupling between two nanocrystals and the doping density of the channel, are analysed. Moreover the necessity of including the excited states of the nanocrystals and the subbands of the channel is shown. Finally the tunneling times to charge the nanocrystals in the floating gate from the channel are simulated and discussed.

Abstract: In quantum flash memories, the floating gate is a nanocrystal (NC) layer which can be charged from the channel. To our knowledge, no attempt has been carried out to evaluate the interactions between nanocrystals inside a layer. On the contrary, since the NCs are commonly supposed to be independent, reduced systems of single NC are often considered. In our model and simulations, we show that the NC charging is not only related to relevant thicknesses (tunnel, oxide) and NC radii, but also to the electrostatic coupling that exists between two nanocrystals inside the floating gate layer.

Abstract: Resume Les meningites a listeria chez l'enfant immunocompetent sont exceptionnelles et ne sont pas denuees de complications. Observation. - Nous rapportons le cas d'une meningite lymphocytaire decapitee par la vancomycine chez une fillette de sept ans. Le diagnostic de listeriose cerebromeningee a ete porte sur l'apparition secondaire d'une hydrocephalie due a une arachnoidite au niveau de la jonction du troisieme ventricule et de l'aqueduc de Sylvius. Conclusion. – Cette observation souligne l'interet d'associer de l'amoxicilline a l'antibiotherapie probabiliste de toute meningite lymphocytaire sans bacterie identifiee, avec un important syndrome inflammatoire biologique, chez l'enfant immunocompetent compris.

23. Traitement des rectocèles et des élytrocèles par voie abdominale : apport de la laparoscopie

Abstract: Resume But de l’etude. – Le but du travail est de rapporter les resultats de la promontofixation rectale associee a une douglassectomie dans le traitement des rectoceles et des elytroceles. Materiel et methodes. – Il s’agissait d’une etude retrospective concernant 72 patientes operees par le meme operateur a vocation coloproctologique entre 1992 et 2002. Une intervention par laparotomie avait ete realisee 37 fois entre 1992 et 2001. La voie laparoscopique a ete adoptee chez 35 patientes entre 1995 et 2002. Une promontofixation rectale fut realisee par une seule bandelette prothetique fixee sur la face anterolaterale droite du rectum et au ligament commun prevertebral. La meme bandelette fut aussi utilisee pour fixer l’appareil genital. Les gestes urinaires associes furent tres frequents, soit therapeutiques soit prophylactiques. Resultats. – Les resultats a distance furent apprecies pour 63 malades qui avaient un recul superieur a un an. Il n’y avait aucune malade perdue de vue. Le recul moyen fut de 58 mois. Une recidive de la tumefaction vaginale fut notee chez deux patientes. On nota que la promontofixation ameliore la dyschesie dans 80 % des cas, les troubles de la continence anale dans 95 % des cas et l’incontinence urinaire associee dans 70 % des cas. Conclusion. – L’approche abdominale est le traitement de choix des volumineuses rectoceles et elytroceles associees a d’autres troubles de la statique pelvienne notamment a un prolapsus rectal interne et/ou a une descente importante du plancher pelvien. L’abord par cœlioscopie ajoute ses avantages avec une moindre morbidite et aussi une amelioration du resultat fonctionnel.

Abstract: The recent interest in reversible conversion reaction process versus lithium in transition metal oxides raises a fundamental question regarding the role played by the metallic cobalt or the electrolyte. In this work, we report on the electrochemical reactivity of cobalt oxide and antimonide, metallic cobalt and antimony thin films toward lithium. Nanometer thin films were prepared by pulsed laser deposition (PLD) using a stoichiometric target. The obtained films were characterized from their chemical and electrochemical properties by means of various complementary techniques such as x-ray diffraction (XRD), electronic microscopy and electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance (EQCM).

Abstract: The electrochemical reactivity mechanism of M3B2O6 (with M = Co, Ni, and Cu) powders toward lithium was studied by a combination of transmission electron microscopy (TEM), infrared spectroscopy (IR), 11B magic angle spinning nuclear magnetic resonance (MAS NMR), and electrochemical techniques. The electrochemical properties of these materials as anodes for lithium batteries were investigated and found to be similar to those of 3d-metal oxides. In fact, the reduction process of 3d-metal borates involves their decomposition in metal nanograins dispersed into a lithia matrix surrounded by an organic layer responsible for the observed extra capacity. The lithia matrix consists of a mixture of lithium oxide (Li2O) and lithium orthoborate (Li3BO3). During the subsequent charge, the organic layer vanishes and the metal grains are partially or fully oxidized with the concomitant decomposition of Li2O. Abstract: Future cosmology space missions will concentrate on measuring the polarization of the Cosmic Microwave Background, which potentially carries invaluable information about the earliest phases of the evolution of our universe. Such ambitious projects will ultimately be limited by the sensitivity of the instrument and by the accuracy at which polarized foreground emission from our own Galaxy can be subtracted out. We present the PILOT balloon project which will aim at characterizing one of these foreground sources, the polarization of the dust continuum emission in the diffuse interstellar medium. The PILOT experiment will also constitute a test-bed for using multiplexed bolometer arrays for polarization measurements. We present the results of ground tests obtained just before the first flight of the instrument., Comment: 17 pages, 13 figures. Abstract: ArTeMiS is a wide-field submillimeter camera operating at three wavelengths simultaneously (200, 350 and 450 microns). A preliminary version of the instrument equipped with the 350 microns focal plane, has been successfully installed and tested on APEX telescope in Chile during the 2013 and 2014 austral winters. This instrument is developed by CEA (Saclay and Grenoble, France), IAS (France) and University of Manchester (UK) in collaboration with ESO. We introduce the mechanical and optical design, as well as the cryogenics and electronics of the ArTeMiS camera. ArTeMiS detectors are similar to the ones developed for the Herschel PACS photometer but they are adapted to the high optical load encountered at APEX site. Ultimately, ArTeMiS will contain 4 sub-arrays at 200 microns and 2x8 sub-arrays at 350 and 450 microns. We show preliminary lab measurements like the responsivity of the instrument to hot and cold loads illumination and NEP calculation. Details on the on-sky commissioning runs made in 2013 and 2014 at APEX are shown. We used planets (Mars, Saturn, Uranus) to determine the flat-field and to get the flux calibration. A pointing model was established in the first days of the runs. The average relative pointing accuracy is 3 arcsec. The beam at 350 microns has been estimated to be 8.5 arcsec, which is in good agreement with the beam of the 12 m APEX dish. Several observing modes have been tested, like On-The-Fly for beam-maps or large maps, spirals or raster of spirals for compact sources. With this preliminary version of ArTeMiS, we concluded that the mapping speed is already more than 5 times better than the previous 350 microns instrument at APEX. The median NEFD at 350 microns is 600 mJy.s1/2, with best values at 300 mJy.s1/2. The complete instrument with 5760 pixels and optimized settings will be installed during the first half of 2015., Comment: 11 pages, 11 figures. Abstract: The ESA satellite project Planck is designed to survey the sky at sub-millimetre and millimetre wavelengths in a drift scan mode. The High-Frequency Instrument (HFI) will use 48 bolometers cooled to 100 mK by a dilution cooler. In this paper, we describe how the scan strategy leads to requirements on the 0.1 K stage temperature stability and how a combination of a passive and an active system can be used to approach this specification.

Abstract: We have designed and built a large-throughput dual channel photometer, Diabolo. This photometer is dedicated to the observation of millimetre continuum diffuse sources, and in particular, of the Sunyaev-Zel'dovich effect and of anisotropies of the 3K background. We describe the optical layout and filtering system of the instrument, which uses two bolometric detectors for simultaneous observations in two frequency channels at 1.2 and 2.1 mm. The bolometers are cooled to a working temperature of 0.1 K provided by a compact dilution cryostat. The photometric and angular responses of the instrument are measured in the laboratory. First astronomical light was detected in March 1995 at the focus of the new Millimetre and Infrared Testa Grigia Observatory (MITO) Telescope. The established sensitivity of the system is of 7 mK_RJ s^1/2$. For a typical map of at least 10 beams, with one hour of integration per beam, one can achieve the rms values of y_SZ ~ 7 10^-5 and the 3K background anisotropy Delta T/T ~ 7 10^-5, in winter conditions. We also report on a novel bolometer AC readout circuit which allows for the first time total power measurements on the sky. This technique alleviates (but does not forbid) the use of chopping with a secondary mirror. Abstract: PRONAOS is a balloon-borne system dedicated to astronomical observations in the submillimeter range (180µm - 1050µm) based on the use of a 2m Cassegrain telescope. The primary mirror consists of six CFRP (Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastic) panels, each being positioned by three actuators. The rotation angles of the panels have been measured in the visible range with the help of a CCD and digital centroiding techniques that were necessary because of the light scattering on the CFRP mirror. The translation movements (along the optical axis) of the panels have been measured with an interference technique in the submillimeter range. Both visible and submillimeter measurements were also necessary to determine the alignment of the telescope - focal instrument system with the star sensor. The whole alignment process leads to a precision of ±8″ for the rotation angles and ±7µm for the translation of each panel, sufficient for a qualification of the system.

Abstract: The Polarized Instrument for Long wavelength Observation of the Tenuous interstellar medium (PILOT) is a balloon borne experiment designed to measure the polarized emission from dust grains in the galaxy in the submillimeter range. The payload is composed of a telescope at the optical focus of which is placed a camera using 2048 bolometers cooled to 300 mK. The camera performs polarized optical measurements in two spectral bands (240 μm and 550 μm). The polarization measurement is based on a cryogenic rotating half-wave plate and a fixed mesh grid polarizer placed at 45o separating the beam into two orthogonal polarized components each detected by a detector array. The Institut d’Astrophysique Spatiale (Orsay, France) is responsible for the design, integration, tests and spectral calibration of the camera. Two optical benches have been designed for its imaging and polarization characterization and spectral calibration. Theses setups allow to validate the alignment of the camera cryogenic optics, to check the optical quality of the images, to characterize the time and intensity response of the detectors, and to measure the overall spectral response. A numerical photometric model of the instrument was developed for the optical configuration during calibration tests (spectral), functional tests (imager) on the ground, and flight configuration at the telescope focus, giving an estimate of the optical power received by the detectors for each configuration.

Abstract: SPM is a multi-channels photometer designed to obtain the best sensitivity at the focus of the 2 m balloon-borne PRONAOS telescope. Its scientific goals include the measurement of cosmological background anisotropy, which is important for understanding the origin of the structure in the universe and the observation of cold solid matter in the interstellar medium as an indicator of the physical conditions that prevail in star forming regions. SPM consists of warm optics that ensure beam switching and in-flight calibration, a liquid helium cryostat that contains filters and the 3 He cooled bolometers, and electronics for housekeeping and data handling. The spectral bands are 180–240 μm, 240–340 μm, 340–540 μm and 540–1200 μm. They are defined by dichroics, which allows simultaneous observations in the four bands. The expected NEΔT in flight is significantly less than 1 mK in all the bands. SPM will fly with PRONAOS in May 1994.

Abstract: We are developing a detection system based on a NbSi Transition Edge Sensor (TES) bolometer array. A thermo-mechanical architecture accomodates the array and the cryogenic stage of the readout. We model the coupling of the TES bolometer to the radiation by means of twin slot antenna. We present the latest design of the cryogenic readout which includes a BiCMOS SiGe integrated circuit at 4 K controlling a Superconducting Quantum Interference Device (SQUID) amplifier.

Abstract: The achievement of the Planck and Herschel space missions in the submillimeter and millimeter range was made possible by a continuous effort on detector developments. Now limited by the intrinsic fluctuations of the radiation coming from the astronomical sources themselves, the sensitivity improvement requires the development of large arrays of detectors filling the focal plane of the telescopes. We present here the development of a TES array using NbSi sensors on SiN membranes. The readout electronics is based on SQUIDs and a cooled SiGe ASIC multiplexer. The detector is coupled with the input radiation by means of antenna. The present goal performance is adapted for the realisation of a ground based millimeter camera.

Abstract: Context. The High Frequency Instrument (HFI) is one of the two focal instruments of the Planck mission. It will observe the whole sky in six bands in the 100 GHz–1 THz range.\ud \ud Aims. The HFI instrument is designed to measure the cosmic microwave background (CMB) with a sensitivity limited only by fundamental sources: the photon noise of the CMB itself and the residuals left after the removal of foregrounds. The two high frequency bands will provide full maps of the submillimetre sky, featuring mainly extended and point source foregrounds. Systematic effects must be kept at negligible levels or accurately monitored so that the signal can be corrected. This paper describes the HFI design and its characteristics deduced from ground tests and calibration.\ud \ud Methods. The HFI instrumental concept and architecture are feasible only by pushing new techniques to their extreme capabilities, mainly: (i) bolometers working at 100 mK and absorbing the radiation in grids; (ii) a dilution cooler providing 100 mK in microgravity conditions; (iii) a new type of AC biased readout electronics and (iv) optical channels using devices inspired from radio and infrared techniques.\ud \ud Results. The Planck-HFI instrument performance exceeds requirements for sensitivity and control of systematic effects. During ground-based calibration and tests, it was measured at instrument and system levels to be close to or better than the goal specification.

Abstract: Context. The Planck satellite was successfully launched on May 14th 2009. We have completed the pre-launch calibration measurements of the High Frequency Instrument (HFI) on board Planck and their processing.\ud \ud Aims. We present the results ot the pre-launch calibration of HFI in which we have multiple objectives. First, we determine instrumental parameters that cannot be measured in-flight and predict parameters that can. Second, we take the opportunity to operate and understand the instrument under a wide range of anticipated operating conditions. Finally, we estimate the performance of the instrument built.\ud \ud Methods. We obtained our pre-launch calibration results by characterising the component and subsystems, then by calibrating the focal plane at IAS (Orsay) in the Saturne simulator, and later from the tests at the satellite level carried out in the CSL (Liège) cryogenic vacuum chamber. We developed models to estimate the instrument pre-launch parameters when no measurement could be performed.\ud \ud Results. We reliably measure the Planck-HFI instrument characteristics and behaviour, and determine the flight nominal setting of all parameters. The expected in-flight performance exceeds the requirements and is close or superior to the goal specifications.

Abstract: The ArTeMiS submillimetric camera will observe simultaneously the sky at 450, 350 and 200 μm using 3 different focal planes made of 2304, 2304 and 1152 bolometric pixels respectively. This camera will be mounted in the Cassegrain cabin of APEX, a 12 m antenna located on the Chajnantor plateau, Chile. To realize the bolometric arrays, we have adapted the Silicon processing technology used for the Herschel-PACS photometer to account for higher incident fluxes and longer wavelengths from the ground. In addition, an autonomous cryogenic system has been designed to cool the 3 focal planes down to 300 mK. Preliminary performances obtained in laboratory with the first of 3 focal planes are presented. Latest results obtained in 2009 with the P-ArTeMiS prototype camera are also discussed, including massive protostellar cores and several star forming regions that have been clearly identified and mapped.

39. [Guidelines for rehabilitation management of non-neurological urinary incontinence in women]

Abstract: Pelvic floor rehabilitation is prescribed as first-line treatment for women with stress urinary incontinence, particularly in cases of urinary incontinence with no first-degree uterine prolapse, with poor-quality perineal testing results or inverted perineal command. Prescription of 15 sessions should suffice to evaluate the possibilities of improving the incontinence. The sessions can be continued if the patient feels she is progressing but has not reached sufficient results. With no progression despite properly conducted rehabilitation, the question of whether to continue the physical therapy arises. Currently, therapists determine the number of sessions. They are better apt to know whether sessions should be pursued and should relay a report to the prescribing physician. This type of rehabilitation is within the domain of physical therapists. Midwives can be responsible for postpartum rehabilitation. On the other hand, the importance of the patient's role in the results and their maintenance is well known. Occasionally a few sessions some time after the initial sessions can serve to verify the acquisitions and motivate the patient in her personal contribution to this rehabilitation. The work of the physical therapist cannot be substituted with Keat-type home electrostimulation. The physical therapist plays an important role in the overall management of this condition. Currently, in absence of demonstrated efficacy, self-administration of electrostimulation is not recommended. In urge incontinence, the rehabilitation approach will be used concomitantly with prescription of anticholergics with behavioral therapy and bladder biofeedback work. In addition, low-frequency electrostimulation can be done during the session. Starting with 10-12 sessions is sufficient. In all cases, rehabilitation should take a multidisciplinary approach and be integrated into a medical and/or surgical management plan.

40. [Guidelines for the palliative treatment of non-neurological urinary incontinence in women]

Abstract: Absorbant products have greatly improved over the past few years in terms of both efficacy and comfort, but the problem of cost for patients persists. They can only be used for short periods of time while waiting for effective curative treatment or over longer periods if no other management option is possible. The model chosen must be adapted to the amount of leakage and the patient's shape. Many nonabsorbant palliative treatments have been reported, often with small series. They can be grouped into three types: extra-urethral occlusive devices, intra-urethral obstructive devices, and intravaginal support devices. The use of a pessary or other vaginal devices can be proposed, in particular with associated prolapse, which can be used when leakage is very occasional (sport, etc.) or in women who cannot have any other treatment.

Abstract: Measuring precisely the faint polarization of the Far-Infrared and sub-millimetre sky is the next observational challenge of modern astronomy. In particular, detection the B-mode polarization from the cosmic microwave background (CMB) shall reveal the inflationary periods in the very early universe. Such measurements will require very high sensitivity and very low instrumental systematic effects. As for measurements of the CMB intensity, sensitive measurements of the CMB polarization will be made difficult by the presence of foreground emission from our own Milky Way, which is stronger than the faint polarized cosmological signal. Such foreground emission will have to be understood very accurately and removed from cosmological measurements. This polarized emission is also interesting in itself, since it brings information relevant to star formation processes, about the orientation of the magnetic field in our Galaxy through the alignment of dust grains. I will first summarize our current knowledge in this field. I will then describe the PILOT balloon-borne experiment project, which is dedicated to measuring precisely the polarization of faint diffuse dust emission from our Galaxy in the Far-Infrared.

Abstract: ArTeMiS is a camera designed to operate on large ground based submillimetric telescopes in the 3 atmospheric windows 200, 350 and 450 µm. The focal plane of this camera will be equipped with 5760 bolometric pixels cooled down at 300 mK with an autonomous cryogenic system. The pixels have been manufactured, based on the same technology processes as used for the Herschel-PACS space photometer. We review in this paper the present status and the future plans of this project. A prototype camera, named P-ArTeMiS, has been developed and successfully tested on the KOSMA telescope in 2006 at Gornergrat 3100m, Switzerland. Preliminary results were presented at the previous SPIE conference in Orlando (Talvard et al, 2006). Since then, the prototype camera has been proposed and successfully installed on APEX, a 12 m antenna operated by the Max Planck Institute fur Radioastronomie, the European Southern Observatory and the Onsala Space Observatory on the Chajnantor site at 5100 m altitude in Chile. Two runs have been achieved in 2007, first in March and the latter in November. We present in the second part of this paper the first processed images obtained on star forming regions and on circumstellar and debris disks. Calculated sensitivities are compared with expectations. These illustrate the improvements achieved on P-ArTeMiS during the 3 experimental campaigns.

Abstract: Future space experiments will require large arrays of sensitive detectors in the submillimeter and millimeter range. Superconducting transition-edge sensors (TESs) are currently under heavy development to be used as ultra sensitive bolometers. In addition to good performance, the choice of material depends on long term stability (both physical and chemical) along with a good reproducibility and uniformity in fabrication. For this purpose we are investigating the properties of co-evaporated NbSi thin films. NbSi is a well-known alloy for use in resistive thermometers. We present a full low temperature characterization of superconductive NbSi films. In order to tune the critical temperature of the NbSi thermometers down to the desired range, we have to adjust the concentration of niobium in the NbSi alloy. Tests are made using 4He-cooled cryostats, 300mK 3He mini-fridges, Resistance Bridges and commercial SQUID. Measured parameters are the critical temperature, the sharpness of the transition. Noise measurements are on-going.

Superconducting transition-edge sensors (TESs) are currently under heavy development to be used as ultra sensitive bolometers. In addition to good performance, the choice of material depends on long term stability (both physical and chemical) along with a good reproducibility and uniformity in fabrication. For this purpose we are investigating the properties of NbSi thin films and have already developed arrays of NbSi TES. NbSi is a well-known alloy for use in resistive thermometers. We present a low temperature characterization of the NbSi films on a 23-pixel array. In order to tune the critical temperature of the NbSi thermometers down to the desired range, we have to adjust the concentration of Niobium in the NbSi alloy. In this experiment, we set for a Niobium concentration of 15 percent, to be able to run tests at a convenient temperature larger than 300 miliKelvin. Tests are made using Helium4-cooled cryostats, 300 miliKelvin Helium3 mini-fridges, resistance bridge and a commercial SQUID with its readout circuit. Parameters being measured are: critical temperature, resistance, sharpness of the transition given by the alpha parameter and noise measurements. The multiplexing is also developed to prepare the final chain for noise measurements on 23 pixel bolometers array.

47. [Intraorbital dermoid cyst: case report]

Abstract: Dermoid cysts account for 3-4 % of primary orbital tumors. The intraorbital location is relatively rare. The authors report a case of a 12-year-old male with an intraorbital dermoid cyst revealed by progressive right proptosis. The imaging aspects (CT scan and MRI) were consistent with intraconic dermoid cyst. The tumor was extirpated via a subfrontal approach. Histopathologic examination confirmed the diagnosis of dermoid cyst. The authors discuss the clinical symptoms, radiological aspects, and management.

48. [Neurosurgical management of paraplegia complicating Pott's disease: a six-case study]

Abstract: Tuberculosis is a rare disease in economically developed countries. Paraplegia is one of its severe complications, occurring in cases of spondylodiscitis with compressive epiduritis and/or pathological fracture of vertebral bodies with subacute kyphosis. Six patients aged 15-75 years were treated in our department from May 2005 to April 2006 by the same operator (L.N.) for paraplegia complicating Pott's disease. Patients' neurologic function at admission and their outcomes three and 12 months after surgery were graded using the Frankel classification. MRI showed a single lesion in five cases and skip lesions in one case. Standard antituberculosis chemotherapy was started immediately within the first week of admission in five patients following a 12-month regimen. Principles of surgical treatment were ventral spinal cord decompression (with or without dorsal stage procedure), immediate grafting, correction of subacute spinal deformity and instrumentation in all cases. The diagnosis of Mycobacterium tuberculosis was confirmed by laboratory investigations in four cases and by histopathological examination in all cases. One patient who had undergone prior isolated laminectomy performed by an on call team presented neurological deterioration and progressive kyphosis. Neurological outcome improved in five patients. Four of them were able to walk unaided within the first three months after surgery. No perioperative complication occurred. In paraplegia complicating vertebral tuberculosis, overall neurological outcome appeared to be good in case of delayed emergency surgical management combined with antituberculosis chemotherapy.

Abstract: Ventrolateral cervicotomy provides a narrowed working space for surgical management of upper thoracic spine. We report our experience about ventral upper thoracic spinal cord decompression with reconstruction and plating via the cervicomanubrial route. Six patients (24 to 75 years old) were operated on by the same operator (LN) by cervicomanubriotomy from 2002 to 2007 for upper thoracic spinal cord compression (one case of Pott's disease, three cases of metastases, one fracture, one invasive hemangio-epithelioma), with a good outcome in five patients. Lesions were located from the cervicothoracic junction down to the fourth thoracic vertebra (T4). In all cases, anterior spinal cord decompression, strut graft reconstruction (iliac bone in two cases, cement in four cases) and osteosynthesis were performed. In two cases, a second stage posterior decompression with fixation was performed. The approach begins by a left sided anterior cervicotomy, medial to the sternocleidomastoid muscle and lateral to the trachea and esophagus, associated with division of the infrahyoid muscles close to their insertion at the upper thoracic outlet followed by osteotomy of the manubrium sterni. Then, division of the thyropericardic fascia and thymus, control of the brachiocephalic vein, control of the thoracic lymphatic duct and the horizontal thoracic aorta are performed. The ventral part of fifth cervical vertebra body down to T4 is then exposed between the left primitive carotid artery laterally, the esophagus medially and the thoracic aorta caudally. Compared to total sternotomy without or with clavicle resection, cervicomanubriotomy seems to be a less aggressive, safe and reliable procedure.

Abstract: Future cosmology space missions will concentrate on measuring the polarization of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB), which potentially carries invaluable information about the earliest phases of the evolution of our universe. Such ambitious projects will ultimately be limited by the sensitivity of the instrument and by the accuracy at which polarized foreground emission from our own Galaxy can be subtracted out. We present the PILOT balloon project which will aim at characterizing one of these foreground sources, the polarization of the dust continuum emission in the diffuse interstellar medium. The PILOT experiment will also constitute a test-bed for using multiplexed bolometer arrays for polarization measurements.
