Northeastern part of Anatolia is a gene center of grapevine and a wide diversity of Fox grapes grow here. Viticulture and some grapevines in the Black Sea Region (in the north of Turkey) are on the verge of extinction; several types and varieties grown in this region have never been described and did not survive till present. For the past 10 years vineyards and grapevines in the Black Sea Region have been studied. In the present study, eighteen grapevines of foxy taste grown in the Artvin and Rize provinces were described. An ampelographic description of young shoot, mature shoot, young leaf, mature leaf, berry, bunch and seed were carried out using the OIV (Office International de la Vigne et du Vin) list for grapevine cultivars and Vitis species. However, several other parameters of the cultivars were measured for evaluation.

Purpose: The objective of this study was to analyze the effect of different weights of basketball shoes on speed and jumping performance in male basketball players. Methods: 20 male basketball players in two groups, as eyes open (n:10) and eyes closed (n:10) participated in the study. The two groups performed vertical jump (VJ) and 10m sprint tests with three different weights of shoes (light, 352g; medium, 510g; heavy, 637g). The data were analyzed with Friedman repeated measurements variance analysis. Results: In Vertical Jump test, jumping performance of the eyes open group (EOG) with light shoes was found to be statistically higher as 1.8% and 2.1%, respectively when compared with medium and heavy shoes (p< 0.001). In eyes closed group (ECG), no statistically significant difference was found between any of the 3 shoe weights in vertical jump performance (p>0.005). In 10 meter (m) sprint test, 10 m sprint time of the eyes open group was found to be statistically better as 0.5% and 1.6%, respectively when compared with medium and heavy shoe performance (p

In this paper, industrial control measurements of the heat treatment of high chromium steel (HCS) rolls is presented. Measurements of the gas fired car bottom chamber furnace Bosio PP-KP 70/1150 were carried out in the company Valji d. o. o., Štore, Slovenia. Temperature in the individual heating zones of the furnace, temperatures of the roll surface, furnace external walls, and gas consumption was monitored throughout the whole process of heat treatment. The temperature profile of the rolls cross-section was calculated using computer simulation. Periodical measurements of CO and NOx emissions were also carried out with the aim of combustion evaluation and ecological integrity. The successfulness of heat treatment was examined through microstructure observation, hardness measurement, and the amount of retained austenite in the heat treated rolls.

In this paper the development of a banded microstructure in hot-rolled 34CrNiMo6 steel which consisted of bainitic and martensitic bands is explained. The chemical compositions of the bands were measured with energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (EDS), which showed that the martensitic bands contained more alloying elements (Mn, Cr, Mo, Si) than bainitic bands. By using Oberhoffer reagent, the segregations of phosphorus were also revealed. These phosphorus segregations coincided with the positive segregations of the alloying elements. The continuous cooling transformation (CCT) diagrams of steel were calculated. They confirmed the formation of martensite in positive segregations and the formation of bainite in negative segregations.

The presented work studied the response of new generation armored steel plates PROTAC 500 to the ballistic testing with armored piercing bullets with a core of tungsten carbide, charge 7,62 mm, and interactions between the piercing bullets and the armored steel plate were also investigated. The most obvious and significant phenomena in penetrating of the piercing bullets Nammo AP8 in steel target PROTAC 500 are strain hardening of steels, the appearance of cracks and local failure, adiabatic shear bands (ASB) with related phase transformations, and melting as well as alloying at the border of the bullet / the steel plate.

This paper presents the possibilities of application of close-range photogrammetry, based on the Structure-from- Motion (SfM) approach, in 3D model’s reconstruction of bronze cast sculptures. Special attention was dedicated to the analysis of image processing strategy, and its impact on the 3D model reconstruction quality. For the purpose of analysis a bust of Nikola Tesla, placed in front of the Faculty of Technical Sciences University of Novi Sad was used. Experimental results indicate that the strategy employing multi-group photo processing provides substantial reductions in processing time while providing satisfactory results in 3D reconstruction.

In the manufacturing industry of electrical contacts, the prohibition of the use of toxic metals (Cd, Be), and desire to avoid the alloying with precious metals (Ag) has created a need for new alloys with good electrical conductivity and high mechanical properties at elevated temperatures. As a potentially useful material for this purpose, we have analyzed the continuously cast Cu-Fe-Ni-P alloy in various heat treatment conditions. Sequence of phase transformations during heat treatment was followed by 4 point D.C. electrical resistivity measuring method, and analyzed by scanning (SEM) and transmission (TEM) electron microscopy. Measurements of Vickers hardness and electrical conductivity after various heat treatment procedures indicate on high potential of Cu-Fe-Ni-P alloys as a material for electrical contacts.

Introduced research work relates to the possibility of material flow enhancement in production systems, with the apostrophe on material order picking in production assembly lines. The paper presents basic rules and the results related to formed computer models of zoned order picking systems under the application of developed bound cavities method.

This work presents the results of the microstructure observation of six different types of NiTi orthodontic wires by using Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM). Within these analyses the chemical compositions of each wire were observed in different places by applying the EDS detector. Namely, the chemical composition in the orthodontic wires is very important because it shows the dependence between the phase temperatures and mechanical properties. Microstructure observations showed that orthodontic wires consist of nano-sized grains containing precipitates of Ti2Ni and/or TiC. The first precipitated Ti2Ni are rich in Ti, while the precipitated TiC is rich in C. Further investigation showed that there was a difference in average grain size in the NiTi matrix. The sizes of grains in orthodontic wires are in the range from approximately 50 to 160 nm and the sizes of precipitate are in the range from 0,3 μm to 5 μm.

Metal grinding is a one of the manufacturing technologies that is greatly connected to particles emission. Particles generated during the grinding process are dangerous in terms of its potential penetration deeply into the lungs of an operator. The level of risk for human respiratory system is related to nature, shape and size of the particles, and for this reason it is important to have a quality characterization of emitted particles. This paper focuses on particles characterization on the bases of image analysis from scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The research was conducted during the process of grinding of steel EN 90MnV8, using personal sampler. Results of image analysis, consisted of Feret’s diameter and circularity, showed quite a wide range of sizes and significant deviation of particles from regular shape.

This paper shows the impact of mixing water and abrasives in water jet cutting process on the quality of the machined surface. The tests were done with polymer material SIPAS, where the influence of cutting parameters was researched (cutting pressure, cutting feed and abrasive mass flow). The surface roughness was measured on several zones, regarding the depth of materials, because the roughness is increased with the material thickness.

Intercrystally distributed nonmetallic inclusions greatly increase weld susceptibility to hot cracking. Oxide and sulphide inclusions are the result of contaminated base material or its highly oxidised surfaces and they can be a consequence of metallurgical reactions between welding slag and remelted base material, while carbide inclusions can occur due to the mixing of high-carbon base and low-carbon filler material. All welding surfaces must thus be cleaned before welding and the least possible mixture of base with filler material must be enusured during welding.

The drilling head pipe connection is made of quenched and tempered steel 34CrNiMo6. The steel characteristic is high hardenability. Due to unsuitable and untested welding technology the heat affected zone (HAZ) cooling rate after welding surpassed the upper critical cooling rate. During horizontal drilling of the rock, the resulting brittle martensite could not bear the dynamic loads which led to a brittle fracture of the pipe connection.

In the frame of this work, Al-5Ni-1Co-3RE (RE-Rare Earth (Mischmetal)) rapidly solidified ribbons were manufactured and analyzed. The morphology of the as-cast structure, as well as the microstructural features were analyzed by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Thermal stability has been investigated by combination of four point scanning electrical resistivity measurement (ER), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and microhardness measurement. From the results we can conclude, that Al-5Ni-1Co-3RE rapidly solidified alloys have good thermal stability due to very slow coarsening kinetics of precipitated particles.

Modern rhodium plating solutions are based on either sulphate or phosphate. Although in theory there are four possible combinations, in practice only three different rhodium electrolytes are used. These are based on dilutions of rhodium sulphate or phosphate concentrates with added sulphuric or phosphoric acid. These processes are be discussed in this paper with a demonstration of Rh platings in the Slovenian firm Zlatarna Celje d.d.

Due to the nature of polymeric materials, during thermal cutting processes it leads to their melting, and therefore appear errors in the final product. This paper presents a “cold” process of cutting polyamide 6 ie. SIPAS 60, where there are given the characteristics of materials and guidelines for satisfactory quality of process. The authors made the cut experiment 32 were they changed the cutting parameters (cutting pressure, cutting feed and abrasive mass flow); the surface roughness was measured by the depth of material, because the roughness changes with the thickness of the material to be cut.

The paper focuses, first, on the characterization of the whiskers on the surface of grey cast iron and second, it gives an explanation of whiskers growth based on thermodynamic calculations. The whiskers were observed on the surface of hot plates for the electric stove after black-oxide-coating (blackening) performed the furnace at 650°C in order to produce a protective layer mainly of magnetite (Fe3O4). However, the whiskers caused brown spots on dark grey surface and thus, the surface was aesthetically damaged. The investigations confirmed that whiskers are of hematite (Fe2O3); however, the thermodynamic calculations present that hematite may be formed as a result of the oxidation of magnetite if the partial pressure of oxygen is increased during the blackening.

The presented work discusses the applicability of the selective laser melting technique (SLM) in manufacture of removable partial denture (RPD) frameworks with the emphasis on material properties. The paper presents initial results of a conducted test of the mechanical properties of the F75 Co-Cr dental alloy used with selective laser melting.

The influence of cerium addition on the solidification sequence and microstructure constituents of the Al-Si alloys with 12,6 mass % Si was examined. The solidification was analyzed by a simple thermal analysis. The microstructures were examined with conventional light and scanning electron microscopy. Ternary AlSiCe phase was formed in the Al-Si alloys with added cerium during the solidification process. AlSiCe and β-AlFeSi phases solidified together in the region that solidified the last. Cerium addition influenced on the morphology of the α-AlFeSi phase solidification.

Distortion control is one of the most important concerns of the metal processing industry, which also includes the fine-blanking technology. Fine-blanking of sheet metal involves metal flow and shearing, which result in complex deformation. Distortion occurs during the removal of parts from the tool due to the relaxation of internal stresses. Internal stresses that are generated during fine-blanking have an important effect on the shape and size of parts after fine-blanking. The distortion of ring type products during fine-blanking was analyzed by using dimension measurements, microscopic observation and numerical simulation.

Presented work discusses a complex process of inductive heating and quenching of carbon steel planetary shafts for diesel engine starters. On the measurements base of temperature fi elds on the surface of the planetary shafts by thermographic camera and theoretical knowledge, a mathematical model for temperature conditions determination in the shaft during the entire process of heating and quenching was carried out. On the basis of developed mathematical model a computer program was developed, and used for analyses and induction hardening process optimization of planetary shafts.

This paper is presentation of the development of advanced approach for modeling and structural analysis of jib structure which is usually part of waterway bucket dredgers. Object of analysis is a jib structure which will be reconstructed for the excavation of grain material from a river bed. Main goal of paper is to proof benefits of enough sophisticated i.e. “optimal” FEM model for structural analysis of this type of structures in comparison with simple, but not adequate models. Proper stress state is emphasized as primary, but not only condition. It is necessary to reach serviceability and durability state, as well as affordable financial construction circumstances.

New method for determining contact resistance through variable heat transfer coefficient is introduced which takes into account physical properties of the casting material, process parameters and contact time/length between molten material (melt puddle) and chilling wheel and enables cooling rate prediction before experiment execution. From the results can be concluded, that those process parameters which determine the thickness of the melt puddle in the downstream and consequently the ribbon thickness have major influence on cooling rate of the ribbon. In the case of continuous casting, heat balance of the wheel is calculated and influence of the chill wheel cooling mode on cooling rate of metallic ribbon is analyzed.

Generally failures of different aircraft components and parts are revealed and examined by the use of non-destructive examination methods. In further detailed explanation and interpretation of failures optical and scanning electron microscopy are used. This paper deals with a problem of a crack on aircraft wheel rim made from aluminium alloy 2014-T6.The crack was observed during regular control by the maintenance unit for non-destructive examination of the Slovenian air carrier Adria Airways. The crack on the rim of an aircraft wheel investigated was a typical fatigue crack. At same time a numerous pits were found which served as stress concentrations on the rim surface.

The reduction of area in the through thickness direction is an essential mechanical property of thick steel heavy plates. By a routine control, a very small through thickness reduction of area was found for tensile specimen of a 90 mm plate. Careful investigations of the fracture and section of specimens cut from the as solidified continuously cast 250mmthick slab showed that the cause was the presence of coarse particles of niobium carbonitride as constituent of the quasi eutectic Fe-Nb(C, N) that form because of the centerline segregation of niobium.

In this paper the visioplasticity method is used to find the complete velocity and strain rate distributions from the experimental data, using the finite-difference method. The data about values of strain rates in plastic region of the material is very important for calculating stresses and the prediction of product quality. Specimens of copper alloy were extruded with different lubricants and different coefficients of friction and then the strain rate distributions were analysed and compared. Significant differences in velocity and strain rate distributions were obtained in some regions at the exit of the deformed zone.

Development of a dental alloy with high Au content is based on the ternary system of Au-Pt-Zn with a nominal composition of 86,9Au-9,9Pt-1,5Zn, and about 1,5 wt.% micro-alloying elements (In, Ir, Rh). The results analyses of different heat-treated states showed that the optimal mechanical properties and hardness of an Au-Pt-Zn alloy can be reached with combinations of heat treatment for 20 minutes at 723 K and then slowly cooling, if the alloy was annealed at 1223 K for 30 minutes and the water quenched. Research results confirmed that the microstructure of the Au-Pt-Zn alloy consists of two phases: _1-phase rich in Au (main phase) and _2-phase rich in Pt (minor phase). During XRD analysis and use of the Rietveld method, it was found that the _1-phase content is about 98,5 wt.% while the content of _2-phase is 1,5 wt.%. STA analyses show that the Au-Pt-Zn alloy has a solidus temperature of about 1292 K and a liquidus temperature of about 1412 K.

During eukaryotic chromosome replication cells utilize ring-shaped CMG helicase that separates the two strands of the DNA double helix. Here the authors reveal that CMG helicase activity is inhibited by duplex DNA engagement at the fork, which is relieved by binding of RPA to the lagging-strand template.

How the eukaryotic helicase unzips DNA during replication is not well understood. By measuring the real-time motion of purified CMG unwinding DNA with magnetic tweezers, the authors reveal the dynamics where isolated CMG unwinds via a biased random walk with proclivity to pause.

Summary: In the eukaryotic replisome, DNA unwinding by the Cdc45-MCM-Go-Ichi-Ni-San (GINS) (CMG) helicase requires a hexameric ring-shaped ATPase named minichromosome maintenance (MCM), which spools single-stranded DNA through its central channel. Not all six ATPase sites are required for unwinding; however, the helicase mechanism is unknown. We imaged ATP-hydrolysis-driven translocation of the CMG using cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM) and found that the six MCM subunits engage DNA using four neighboring protomers at a time, with ATP binding promoting DNA engagement. Morphing between different helicase states leads us to suggest a non-symmetric hand-over-hand rotary mechanism, explaining the asymmetric requirements of ATPase function around the MCM ring of the CMG. By imaging of a higher-order replisome assembly, we find that the Mrc1-Csm3-Tof1 fork-stabilization complex strengthens the interaction between parental duplex DNA and the CMG at the fork, which might support the coupling between DNA translocation and fork unwinding. : Eickhoff et al. used cryo-EM to image DNA unwinding by the eukaryotic replicative helicase, Cdc45-MCM-GINS. As the hexameric MCM ring hydrolyses ATP, DNA is spooled asymmetrically around the ring pore. This asymmetry explains why selected ATPase sites are essential for DNA translocation. Summary: Progression of DNA replication depends on the ability of the replisome complex to overcome nucleoprotein barriers. During eukaryotic replication, the CMG helicase translocates along the leading-strand template and unwinds the DNA double helix. While proteins bound to the leading-strand template efficiently block the helicase, the impact of lagging-strand protein obstacles on helicase translocation and replisome progression remains controversial. Here, we show that CMG and replisome progressions are impaired when proteins crosslinked to the lagging-strand template enhance the stability of duplex DNA. In contrast, proteins that exclusively interact with the lagging-strand template influence neither the translocation of isolated CMG nor replisome progression in Xenopus egg extracts. Our data imply that CMG completely excludes the lagging-strand template from the helicase central channel while unwinding DNA at the replication fork, which clarifies how two CMG helicases could freely cross one another during replication initiation and termination. : During DNA replication, the CMG complex unwinds the double helix and must overcome protein barriers on DNA. Kose et al. show that proteins that interact exclusively with the lagging-strand template are bypassed by the helicase without stalling, implying that the lagging-strand template is completely excluded from CMG during unwinding. Purpose: To investigate clinical characteristics of postoperative supraciliary effusion (SCE) development following gonioscopy-assisted transluminal trabeculotomy (GATT) in patients with pseudoexfoliation glaucoma (PEXG)., Methods: In this prospective and observational study, 64 eyes (64 patients) with PEXG were examined with spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) after GATT over a 12-month follow-up. Outcomes were surgical success, intraocular pressure (IOP), best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA), number of antiglaucoma medications (AGM) and complications of the SCE (+) group with those of SCE (-) group., Results: SCE was observed in 39 eyes (60.9%) within the first postoperative week. Probability of complete success was significantly higher in the SCE (+) group than in the SCE (-) group (25.6% vs. 16.0%, p = 0.009). IOP was significantly lower at postoperative first day in the SCE (+) group than in the SCE (-) group (p = 0.04), but it was similar thereafter during follow-up (p > 0.05). Postoperative BCVA did not show significant difference at the end of the follow-up (p > 0.05). Postoperative number of AGM was found to be significantly lower in the SCE (+) group compared to the SCE (-) group (p < 0.05). A significant IOP rise was observed after SCE resolution (p = 0.002)., Conclusion: Presence of SCE accompanied with significantly lower IOP during the early postoperative period after GATT surgery for PEXG. Background: Fuchs uveitis syndrome (FUS) is a chronic intraocular inflammatory disease. It can lead to glaucoma which can be intractable to both medical and surgical treatment. In the present report, we describe our experience with GATT as a primary surgical option in the treatment of glaucoma secondary to FUS., Results: Four consecutive patients with FUS-associated glaucoma underwent GATT in a single institution. Case 1 was a 28-year-old pseudophakic male with a preoperative intraocular pressure (IOP) of 43 mmHg had unsuccessful circumferential cannulation; his IOP remained high after GATT and received trabeculectomy followed by Ahmed glaucoma valve (AGV) implantation to control IOP. Although IOP was stable following AGV, he required descemet membrane endothelial keratoplasty due to persistent corneal decompansation. He had a stable IOP of 12 mmHg over 21 months. Case 2 was a 42-year-old male with preoperative IOP of 35 mmHg and posterior subcapsular cataract had 360-degree GATT combined with phacoemulsification; his IOP reduced to 14 mmHg over 18 months. Case 3 was an 52-year-old pseudophakic male with a preoperative IOP of 28 mmHg had 360-degree GATT; his IOP remained stable at 10 mmHg over 18 months. Case 4 was an 47-year-old pseudophakic female with a preoperative IOP of 39 mmHg had 360-degree GATT; her IOP remained stable at 14 mmHg over 12 months., Conclusion: GATT may be used as an initial approach in secondary glaucoma due to FUS. Prcis: Analysis of surgical success and intraocular pressure (IOP), best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA), and antiglaucomatous medication (AGM) changes between segmental 180-degree and 360-degree gonioscopy-assisted transluminal trabeculectomy (GATT) in patients with pseudoexfoliation glaucoma (PEXG) showed no significant difference., Objective: To compare surgical outcomes of segmental 180-degree and 360-degree GATT in patients with PEXG., Materials and Methods: Prospective, comparative study of 65 PEXG eyes, who underwent segmental 180-degree GATT (GATT 180-degree group, 31 eyes) and 360-degree GATT (GATT 360-degree group, 34 eyes) in a tertiary academic center over a 12-month of follow-up. Primary outcome was qualified and complete surgical success rates for criterion A (IOP <18 mm Hg and >30% reduction) and criterion B (IOP <15 mm Hg and >30% reduction). Secondary outcome measures included IOP reduction, BCVA change, AGM use, and postoperative complications., Results: The probabilities of qualified and complete success rates both for criteria A and B did not significantly differ between the groups ( P > 0.05). IOP and BCVA levels were similar at each time point ( P > 0.05). IOP reduction was 59.3 ± 9.5% in the GATT 180-degree group and 55.8 ± 18.1% in the GATT 360-degree group ( P = 0.33). No significant difference in the mean number of AGM was present at the 12-month visit (1.2 ± 1.1 in GATT 180-degree group vs 1.5 ± 1.2 in GATT 360-degree group, P = 0.25). Significantly higher incidences of postoperative hyphema and IOP spikes were observed in the GATT 360-degree group ( P = 0.01 and P = 0.008, respectively)., Conclusion: Both segmental 180-degree and 360-degree GATT similarly reduced IOP and AGM with comparable surgical success rates in patients with PEXG at the end of 12 months. Postoperative hyphema and IOP spike rates were significantly higher after 360-degree GATT. Aim: To compare participation patterns, environmental supports, and barriers to community activities in adolescents with and without attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in Turkey., Methods: Participants were 94 adolescents with ADHD and 109 adolescents without ADHD ages 13-17 years (mean age 14.6, S.D 1.49 years) Participation frequency, involvement rate, mothers who desired change, and environmental supports and barriers in a community setting were assessed with the Participation and Environment Measure for Children and Youth (PEM-CY)., Results: Adolescents with ADHD participated 20.3% less frequently in socializing with peers in the community than adolescents without ADHD. With moderate to large effect sizes, the mean involvement rate in four community activities, including neighborhood outings, community events, socializing with peers in the community, and religious activities, was significantly lower for adolescents with ADHD than for adolescents without ADHD., Conclusion: Adolescents with ADHD participate less frequently and are less involved in socializing with peers in the community. Almost half of all ADHD adolescents never participate in community events. It was seen that cognitive difficulties, sensory qualities, and safety may prevent adolescents with ADHD from socializing with peers in the community.

Ventriculoarterial connection is one of the important points of the segmental approach to congenital cardiac malformations. Double outlet of both ventricles is a rare form where both great arterial roots override the interventricular septum. In this article, we aimed to draw attention to this very rare form of ventriculoarterial connection by presenting an infant case diagnosed using echocardiography, CT angiography, and 3-dimensional modelling.

Background: Children with chronic conditions face participation restrictions and exclusions., Aims: To investigate how cognitive and behavioural body-functions are associated with 1) participation patterns and 2) environmental factors among children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)., Methods and Procedures: The study included 83 children with ADHD. Cognitive and behavioural body-functions were assessed with Conners' Parent Rating Scale-Revised Long-Version. The participation patterns of children were assessed with Participation and Environment Measure for Children and Youth (PEM-CY). Multiple regression analyses were used to examine the relationships between cognitive and behavioural body-functions and (1) participation patterns at home, school and community settings, and (2) environmental supports and barriers., Outcome and Results: In home setting, inattention and ADHD index which determine ADHD children from typically developing peers, were the strongest factors, explaining 24.9 % of variance in activities that mothers wanted to change. In school setting, presence/level of oppositional behaviours had the strongest effect on environmental barriers, with variation of 29.8 %. Various emerging organic micropollutants, such as pharmaceuticals, have attracted the interest of the water industry during the last two decades due to their insufficient removal during conventional water and wastewater treatment methods and increasing demand for pharmaceuticals projected to climate change-related impacts and COVID-19, nanosorbents such as carbon nanotubes (CNTs), graphene oxides (GOs), and metallic organic frameworks (MOFs) have recently been extensively explored regarding their potential environmental applications. Due to their unique physicochemical features, the use of these nanoadsorbents for organic micropollutans in water and wastewater treatment processes has been a rapidly growing topic of research in recent literature. Adsorptive membranes, which include these nanosorbents, combine the benefits of adsorption with membrane separation, allowing for high flow rates and faster adsorption/desorption rates, and have received a lot of publicity in recent years. The most recent advances in the fabrication of adsorptive membranes (including homogeneous membranes, mixed matrix membranes, and composite membranes), as well as their basic principles and applications in water and wastewater treatment, are discussed in this review. This paper covers ten years, from 2011 to 2021, and examines over 100 published studies, highlighting that micropollutans can pose a serious threat to surface water environments and that adsorptive membranes are promising, particularly in the adsorption of trace substances with fast kinetics. Purpose: To compare the refractive and visual results of image-guided system-assisted small-incision lenticule extraction (IGA-SMILE) and wavefront-optimized femtosecond laser in situ keratomileusis (FS-LASIK) in the treatment of high astigmatism., Settings: Osmangazi Aritmi Hospital, Bursa, Turkey., Design: Retrospective., Methods: This retrospective case-matched study included 64 eyes that had undergone IGA-SMILE and 64 eyes that had undergone wavefront-optimized FS-LASIK. The mean preoperative myopia and astigmatism were -4.05 ± 1.98 diopter (D) and 3.11 ± 1.06 D in the IGA-SMILE group and -4.21 ± 2.23 D and -3.15 ± 0.62 D in the FS-LASIK group, respectively. One year later, visual and refractive results were compared in the groups. Vector analysis based on Alpins method was performed to evaluate astigmatic treatment., Results: 128 eyes of 128 patients were included in this study. At 1 year, the residual astigmatism was -0.21 ± 0.25 D in the IGA-SMILE group and -0.21 ± 0.24 D in the FS-LASIK group ( P = .305). In the IGA-SMILE group, 57 eyes (89.1%) achieved uncorrected distance visual acuity of 20/20 or better, as did 56 eyes (85.9%) in the FS-LASIK group. Vector analysis results demonstrated that the difference vectors were 0.22 ± 0.24 D and 0.21 ± 0.22 D ( P = .230), the correction indexes were 0.95 ± 0.08 and 0.95 ± 0.08 ( P = .239), and the indices of success were 0.08 ± 0.09 and 0.08 ± 0.09 ( P = .248) in the IGA-SMILE and the FS-LASIK groups, respectively., Conclusions: The combination of an image-guided system with SMILE resulted in high efficacy and safety indices that were comparable with FS-LASIK surgery., (Copyright © 2021 Published by Wolters Kluwer on behalf of ASCRS and ESCRS.)

Objectives: To evaluate the hemodynamicdynamic advantage of a new Fontan surgical template that is intended for complex single-ventricle patients with interrupted inferior vena cava-azygos and hemi-azygos continuation. The new technique has emerged from a comprehensive pre-surgical simulation campaign conducted to facilitate a balanced hepatic flow and somatic Fontan pathway growth after Kawashima procedure., Methods: For 9 patients, aged 2 to18 years, majority having poor preoperative oxygen saturation, a pre-surgical computational fluid dynamics customization is conducted. Both the traditional Fontan pathways and the proposed novel Y-graft templates are considered. Numerical model was validated against in vivo phase-contrast magnetic resonance imaging data and in vitro experiments., Results: The proposed template is selected and executed for 6 out of the 9 patients based on its predicted superior hemodynamic performance. Pre-surgical simulations performed for this cohort indicated that flow from the hepatic veins (HEP) do not reach to the desired lung. The novel Y-graft template, customized via a right- or left-sided displacement of the total cavopulmonary connection anastomosis location resulted a drastic increase in HEP flow to the desired lung. Orientation of HEP to azygos direct shunt is found to be important as it can alter the flow pattern from 38% in the caudally located direct shunt to 3% in the cranial configuration with significantly reversed flow. The postoperative measurements prove that oxygen saturation increased significantly (P-value = 0.00009) to normal levels in 1 year follow-up., Conclusions: The new Y-graft template, if customized for the individual patient, is a viable alternative to the traditional surgical pathways. Fontan operation is the last stage of single-ventricle surgical reconstructions that connects superior and inferior vena cava (SVC, IVC) to the pulmonary arteries. The key design objectives in total cavopulmonary connections (TCPC) are to achieve low power loss (PL) and balanced hepatic flow distribution (HFD). Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) played a pivotal role in pre-surgical design of single-ventricle patients. However, the clinical application of current CFD techniques is limited due to their complexity, high computational time and untested accuracy for HFD prediction. This study provides a performance assessment of computationally low-cost steady Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) k-ɛ turbulent models for simulation of Fontan hemodynamics. The performance is evaluated based on prediction accuracy for three clinically important Fontan hemodynamic indices: HFD, PL and total pulmonary flow split (TPFS). For this purpose, a low-cost experimental technique is developed for rapid quantification of Fontan performance indices. Experiments and simulations are performed for both an idealized and a complex 3D reconstructed patient-specific TCPC. Time-averaged flow data from phase contrast MRI was used as the boundary conditions for the patient-specific model. For the idealized model, different SVC/IVC flow ratios corresponding to different cardiac outputs and Reynolds' numbers were examined. This study revealed that steady RANS k-ɛ models are able to estimate the Fontan hemodynamic indices with acceptable accuracy within minutes. Among these, standard k-ɛ two-layer was found to deliver the best agreement with the in vitro data with an average error percentage of 1.7, 2.0 and, 3.9 for HFD, TPFS and, PL, respectively for all cases., (Copyright © 2022 Elsevier Ltd. Limited natural resources and a continuous increase in the demand for modern technological products, is creating a demand and supply gap for rare earth elements (REEs) and Sc. There is therefore a need to adopt the sustainable approach of the circular economy system (CE). In this review, we defined six steps required to close the loop and recover REEs, using a holistic approach. Recent statistics on REEs and Sc demand and the number of waste generations are reported and studies on more environmentally friendly, economic, and/or efficient recovery processes are summarized. Pilot-scale recovery facilities are described for several types of secondary sources. Finally, we identify obstacles to closing the REE loop in a circular economy and the reasons why secondary sources are not preferred over primary sources. Briefly, recovery from secondary sources should be environmentally and economically friendly and of an acceptable standard concerning final product quality. However, current technologies for recovery from for secondary sources are limiting and technology needs will vary depending on the source type. The quality/purity of the recovered metals should be proven so that they do not result in any adverse effects on the product quality, when they are being used as secondary raw material.
