Background: Oral chemotherapy nonadherence is a challenge in clinical oncology. During therapy for acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), poor adherence to 6-mercaptopurine (6MP) increases relapse risk. Clinically significant nonadherence is reported in 30% of children treated for ALL on Children's Oncology Group (COG) trials. Whether nonadherence rates vary across regimens with different treatment schedules and modes of administration is unknown. Methods: We conducted an exploratory, cross-sectional survey study on parents of children (1–18 years) receiving continuation therapy on, or as per Dana-Farber Cancer Institute (DFCI) ALL Consortium Protocol 11-001. Treatment required weekly visits to the clinic and 14 days of oral 6MP every 3 weeks. Survey assessed self-reported sociodemographics, medication-taking, chemotherapy comprehension, and 6MP adherence; adherence survey items were developed from published surveys. Patients were grouped as nonadherent if they endorsed missing one 6MP dose during the last cycle, or more than one dose during prior cycles, for nonmedical reasons. Results: Sixty-two families completed the surveys, all of whom had evaluable adherence data. In total, 25% of patients met the study definition of nonadherence. Twenty-three percent reported that it was “not easy” to follow administration guidelines around the dairy intake and 57% requested more teaching and educational resources. Conclusion: Self-reported nonadherence to oral 6MP in the DFCI ALL Consortium is high, with rates similar to those observed in the COG. This suggests that the additional contact during weekly infusions on the DFCI is insufficient to address barriers affecting oral chemotherapy adherence.

In June of 2013 an application of dinotefuran on an ornamental planting of European linden trees (Tilia cordata Mill. [Malvales: Malvalceae]) in a shopping mall parking lot in Wilsonville, Oregon provoked the largest documented pesticide kill of bumble bees in North America. Based on geographic information systems and population genetic analysis, we estimate that between 45,830 and 107,470 bumble bees originating from between 289 and 596 colonies were killed during this event. Dinotefuran is a neonicotinoid that is highly effective in exterminating and/or harming target pest insects and non-target beneficial insects. Analysis to detect the concentration of pesticides in flowers that received foliar application revealed that the minimum reported dinotefuran concentration of a sampled T. cordata flower was 7.4 ppm, or in excess of 737% above the LC50 of the beneficial pollinator, the honey bee (Apis mellifera Linnaeus, 1758 [Hymenoptera: Apidae]). Furthermore, sampled Vosnesensky bumble bees (Bombus vosnesenskii Radoskowski, 1862 [Hymenoptera: Apidae]) were found to have an average dinotefuran concentration of 0.92 ppm at the time of death, which exceeds the maximum LC50 of A. mellifera (0.884 ppm). Our study underscores the lethal impact of the neonicotinoid pesticide dinotefuran on pollinating insect populations in a suburban environment. To our knowledge, the documentation and impact of pesticide kills on wild populations of beneficial insects has not been widely reported in the scientific literature. It is likely that the vast majority of mass pesticide kills of beneficial insects across other environments go unnoticed and unreported.

Indigenous knowledge is a multilayered knowledge system that can effectively manage global ecosystem and biodiversity conservation. Conservation is an applied discipline with the goal of preserving the world’s biodiversity and ecosystems. However, settler–coloniser conservation practices often fail to fully examine how settler–coloniser epistemologies are centred at the expense of Indigenous conservation praxis. Evaluating how conservation practices outside of an Indigenous lens can become more inclusive and just is a critical area for research and reflection. We draw on our own experiences as early-career researchers working towards anticolonial, just and inclusive approaches to conservation science and practice by discussing what it means to be for a Place. We believe that a non-Indigenous conservationist who is for a Place advocates for inclusive stewardship with Indigenous Peoples and other marginalised communities to conserve species and ecosystems and the connections that bind communities to their landscapes. As an example of how settler–coloniser conservation practitioners can be for a Place, we discuss writing a policy statement in 2019 on behalf of the Society for Conservation Biology opposing the construction of the Thirty Meter Telescope on the summit of Mauna Kea, Hawai‘i. We describe the thought process behind our policy statement and provide examples of other actions for conservation researchers and practitioners working to be for a Place. We aim to provide our colleagues, particularly those trained in settler–coloniser conservation practices, an opportunity to identify more just practices for the Places we aspire to conserve.

Very-high Energy (VHE) gamma-ray astroparticle physics is a relatively young field, and observations over the past decade have surprisingly revealed almost two hundred VHE emitters which appear to act as cosmic particle accelerators. These sources are an important component of the Universe, influencing the evolution of stars and galaxies. At the same time, they also act as a probe of physics in the most extreme environments known - such as in supernova explosions, and around or after the merging of black holes and neutron stars. However, the existing experiments have provided exciting glimpses, but often falling short of supplying the full answer. A deeper understanding of the TeV sky requires a significant improvement in sensitivity at TeV energies, a wider energy coverage from tens of GeV to hundreds of TeV and a much better angular and energy resolution with respect to the currently running facilities. The next generation gamma-ray observatory, the Cherenkov Telescope Array Observatory (CTAO), is the answer to this need. In this talk I will present this upcoming observatory from its design to the construction, and its potential science exploitation. CTAO will allow the entire astronomical community to explore a new discovery space that will likely lead to paradigm-changing breakthroughs. In particular, CTA has an unprecedented sensitivity to short (sub-minute) timescale phenomena, placing it as a key instrument in the future of multi-messenger and multi-wavelength time domain astronomy. I will conclude the talk presenting the first scientific results obtained by the LST-1, the prototype of one CTAO telescope type - the Large-Sized Telescope, that is currently under commission., PoS: Proceedings of Science, 395, ISSN:1824-8039, Proceedings of 37th International Cosmic Ray Conference (ICRC2021)

In the context of evolutionary theory, invasion biology provides a fantastic enigma: how does a species with limited standing genetic variation survive and adapt to a novel environment? Reduced genetic diversity is typically associated with low fitness and evolutionary potential, yet some introduced species have proven to be successful invaders despite undergoing a genetic bottleneck during the early stages of colonization. Our goal in this study was to characterize population genomic and phenotype diversity of invasive Drosophila suzukii (Diptera: Drosophilidae) since colonizing the Hawaiian archipelago as early as the 1980s. Wing phenotype analysis revealed that high altitude populations possessed significantly larger wings than low altitude populations, supporting the hypothesis that insects cope with high altitude environments by developing larger wings. While we discovered low genetic diversity and differentiation in all Hawai‘i populations, three unique genetic clusters were detected with a model-free, multivariate statistical approach. We identified 23 candidate loci under selection using two complementary analyses to detect FST outliers across the genome. For 12 of these loci, predicted proteins are associated with Drosophila spp. chemosensation, amino acid and sodium ion transport, a Ras effector pathway, and cytidine deamination. Despite a genetic bottleneck, adventive D. suzukii populations are beginning to differentiate across the Hawaiian archipelago and selection for key behavioral and cellular processes are likely ongoing.

Drosophila suzukii (Diptera: Drosophilidae) is a significant pest of wild and cultivated soft-skinned fruits. D. suzukii was first detected outside of its native range in 1983 on Mauna Ka‘ala in Wai‘anae, Hawai‘i, and has since spread throughout North America, South America, and Europe. While D. suzukii is not considered a crop pest in Hawai‘i, little data is available on the distribution of the species on a landscape scale on the archipelago. In this study, we document the distribution and abundance of D. suzukii and characterize its host use of ‘ōhelo (Vaccinium reticulatum) across an altitude gradient on the eastern slope of Mauna Loa, Hawai‘i. In total we collected 2,503 D. suzukii across 14 field sites over a four-month period in 2016. Endemic ‘ōhelo is a host for D. suzukii as we detected adult emergence across field sites with up to 1.88 flies per 1 mL of berries. Our preliminary population data shows that D. suzukii abundance is greater at higher altitudes and in forested habitats on Mauna Loa. Given the population abundance of D. suzukii and their ability to use at least one of the three endemic Vaccinium in Hawai‘i as a host, further research on host–use interactions with native and non-native insects is warranted.

During their operational lifetime spacecraft are subjected differential charging effects caused by the space weather environment. The differential charging of materials on s spacecraft eventually drives dielectrics, insulators and conductors used in spacecraft construction to develop differential potentials relative to the spacecraft ground. In areas known as triple junctions, the contact region between differentially biased, electrically dissimilar materials and the space plasma environment, the differential bias can reach breakdown conditions and primary arcs can occur. When a primary arc strike occurs near a charged surface, blown off material from the arc site generates a multi-species plasma that expands across the spacecraft surface. As the plasma expands, it collects the charge accumulated on the spacecraft, feeding it back into the arc site and contributing to the arc energy in an event known as a flashover discharge.

Cuckoo bumble bees (Psithyrus) (Lepeletier, 1832) (Hymenoptera: Apidae) are a unique lineage of bees that depend exclusively on a host bumble bee species to provide nesting material, nutritional resources, and labor to rear offspring. In this study, we document usurpation incidence and population genetic data of Bombus insularis (Smith, 1861) (Hymenoptera: Apidae), a bumble bee species in the Psithyrus subgenus, on field-deployed B. huntii colonies in northern Utah, United States. Within 12 d of deploying B. huntii Greene, 1860 (Hymenoptera: Apidae) colonies at two field sites, 13 of the 16 colonies contained at least one established B. insularis female. Although our results demonstrate that field-deployed bumble bee colonies are highly susceptible to B. insularis usurpation, applying a fabricated excluder to prevent the inquiline from invading a colony was 100% effective. Sibship analysis using microsatellite genotype data of 59 B. insularis females estimates that they originated from at least 49 unique colonies. Furthermore, sibship analysis found siblings distributed between the field sites that were 7.04 km apart. Our result suggests that B. insularis females have the capacity to disperse across the landscape in search of host colonies at distances of at least 3.52 km and up to 7.04 km. Our study underscores the detrimental impact B. insularis usurpation has on the host bumble bee colony. As B. insularis significantly impacts the success of bumble bee colonies, we briefly discuss how the utilization of excluders may be useful for commercial bumble bee colonies that are used to pollinate open field crops.

Islands are insular environments that are negatively impacted by invasive species. In Hawai‘i, at least 21 non-native bees have been documented to date, joining the diversity of >9,000 non-native and invasive species to the archipelago. The goal of this study is to describe the persistence, genetic diversity, and natural history of the most recently established bee to Hawai‘i, Megachile policaris Say, 1831 (Hymenoptera: Megachilidae). Contemporary surveys identify that M. policaris is present on at least O‘ahu, Maui, and Hawai‘i Island, with the earliest detection of the species in 2017. Furthermore, repeated surveys and observations by community members support the hypothesis that M. policaris has been established on Hawai‘i Island from 2017 to 2020. DNA sequenced fragments of the cytochrome oxidase I locus identify two distinct haplotypes on Hawai‘i Island, suggesting that at least two founders have colonized the island. In their native range, M. policaris is documented to forage on at least 21 different plant families, which are represented in Hawai‘i. Finally, ensemble species distribution models (SDMs) constructed with four bioclimatic variables and occurrence data from the native range of M. policaris predicts high habitat suitability on the leeward side of islands throughout the archipelago and at high elevation habitats. While many of the observations presented in our study fall within the predicted habitat suitability on Hawai‘i, we also detected the M. policaris on the windward side of Hawai‘i Island suggesting that the SDMs we constructed likely do not capture the bioclimatic niche flexibility of the species.

Climate change is predicted to increase the risk of biological invasions by increasing the availability of climatically suitable regions for invasive species. Endemic species on oceanic islands are particularly sensitive to the impact of invasive species due to increased competition for shared resources and disease spread. In our study, we used an ensemble of species distribution models (SDM) to predict habitat suitability for invasive bees under current and future climate scenarios in Hawai’i. SDMs projected on the invasive range were better predicted by georeferenced records from the invasive range in comparison to invasive SDMs predicted by records from the native range. SDMs estimated that climatically suitable regions for the eight invasive bees explored in this study will expand by ~934.8% (±3.4% SE). Hotspots for the invasive bees are predicted to expand toward higher elevation regions, although suitable habitat is expected to only progress up to 500 m in elevation in 2070. Given our results, it is unlikely that invasive bees will interact directly with endemic bees found at &gt, 500 m in elevation in the future. Management and conservation plans for endemic bees may be improved by understanding how climate change may exacerbate negative interactions between invasive and endemic bee species.

Dividing cells detect and correct erroneous kinetochore-microtubule attachments during mitosis, thereby avoiding chromosome mis-segregation. Most studies of this process have focused on the Aurora B kinase, which phosphorylates microtubule-binding elements specifically at incorrectly attached kinetochores, promoting their release and providing another chance for proper attachments to form. However, growing evidence suggests additional mechanisms, potentially involving Mps1 kinase, that also underlie error correction. Because these mechanisms overlap in vivo, and because both Mps1 and Aurora B function in numerous other vital processes, their contributions to the correction of erroneous kinetochore attachments have been difficult to disentangle. Here we directly examine how Mps1 activity affects kinetochore-microtubule attachments using a reconstitution-based approach that allowed us to separate its effects from Aurora B activity. When endogenous Mps1 that co-purifies with isolated kinetochores is activated in vitro, it weakens their attachments to microtubules via phosphorylation of Ndc80, a major microtubule-binding element of the outer kinetochore. Mps1 phosphorylation of Ndc80 appears to contribute to error correction because phospho-deficient Ndc80 mutants exhibit genetic interactions and segregation defects when combined with mutants in an intrinsic error correction pathway. In addition, Mps1 phosphorylation of Ndc80 is stimulated on kinetochores lacking tension. These data suggest that Mps1 provides an additional mechanism for correcting erroneous kinetochore-microtubule attachments, complementing the well-known activity of Aurora B.

Metabolic syndrome prevalence has increased among US adults, particularly among non-hispanic white and black women. Sedentary behavior often leads to chronic inflammation, a triggering factor of metabolic syndrome. Given that intrinsic exercise capacity is genetically inherited, we questioned if low-grade chronic inflammation would be present in a female rat model of low intrinsic exercise capacity-induced metabolic syndrome, while beneficial increase of resolution of inflammation would be present in a female rat model of high intrinsic exercise capacity. In the vascular system, two primary markers for inflammation and resolution of inflammation are cyclooxygenase (COX) and lipoxygenase (LOX), respectively. Our study focused on the novel hypothesis that untrained, inherited exercise capacity induces divergent vascular plasticity via changes in the delicate balance between COX and LOX inflammatory mediators. We used divergent rat strains with low (LCR) and high (HCR) aerobic running capacity. By using animals with contrasting intrinsic exercise capacities, it is possible to determine the exact triggers that lead to inherited vascular plasticity in female rats. We observed that female LCR displayed increased periovarian fat pad and body weight, which is congruent with their obesity-presenting phenotype. Furthermore, LCR presented with vascular hypocontractility and increased COX and LOX-derived pro-inflammatory factors. On the other hand, HCR presented with a "shutdown" of COX-induced vasoconstriction and enhanced resolution of inflammation to maintain vascular tone and homeostasis. In conclusion, LCR display low-grade chronic inflammation via increased COX activity. These results provide mechanistic clues as to why lower intrinsic aerobic capacity correlates with a predisposition to risk of vascular disease. Conversely, being born with higher intrinsic aerobic capacity is a significant factor for improved vascular physiology in female rats.

Of the two Bombus Latreille species found in the Philippines, only Bombus irisanensis Cockerell is endemic to the archipelago and is considered to be of vulnerable stasis by IUCN. While this species has not been reported since the 1990’s, here we report on two observations published on iNaturalist.org of B. irisanensis. These observations highlight the importance of natural history databases like iNaturalist, which enable users to upload photographs for expert identification, and we encourage conservationists to take advantage of the data in these repositories.

Accurate mitosis depends on a surveillance system called the spindle assembly checkpoint. This checkpoint acts at kinetochores, which attach chromosomes to the dynamic tips of spindle microtubules. When a kinetochore is unattached or improperly attached, the protein kinase Mps1 phosphorylates kinetochore components, catalyzing the generation of a diffusible “wait” signal that delays anaphase and gives the cell time to correct the error. When a kinetochore becomes properly attached, its checkpoint signal is silenced to allow progression into anaphase. Recently, microtubules were found to compete directly against recombinant human Mps1 fragments for binding to the major microtubule-binding kinetochore element Ndc80c, suggesting a direct competition model for silencing the checkpoint signal at properly attached kinetochores. Here, by developing single-particle fluorescence-based assays, we tested whether such direct competition occurs in the context of native kinetochores isolated from yeast. Mps1 levels were not reduced on kinetochore particles bound laterally to the sides of microtubules or on particles tracking processively with disassembling tips. Instead, we found that Mps1 kinase activity was sufficient to promote its release from the isolated kinetochores. Mps1 autophosphorylation, rather than phosphorylation of other kinetochore components, was responsible for this dissociation. Our findings suggest that checkpoint silencing in yeast does not arise from a direct competition between Mps1 and microtubules, and that phosphoregulation of Mps1 may be a critical aspect of the silencing mechanism.

The Philippines is a biodiversity hotspot and is home to thousands of endemic species, including at least two understudied bumble bee species: Bombus flavescens Smith, 1952 and Bombus irisanensis Cockerell, 1910. Since the 1990s, there have been virtually no studies published on the biology, ecology, and taxonomy of Philippine bumble bees—evidence of the dearth of basic entomological investigations on these important insects. In this preliminary study, our objective is to briefly summarize the geographic distribution of bumble bee habitat suitability (HS) in the Philippines across protected and unprotected areas. Maximum entropy species distribution models (SDMs) of B. flavescens and B. irisanensis were constructed using 19 unique occurrence records and 11 bioclimatic variables to estimate HS in the Philippines. Our SDMs estimated that minimum HS for B. flavescens and B. irisanensis covers ~28,066 and ~24,603 km2 of the 114 protected land parcels in the Philippines, respectively. Across unprotected areas, our SDMs estimated that minimum HS for B. flavescens and B. irisanensis covers ~146,063 and ~156,674 km2, respectively. As predicted, high-elevation habitats have the highest HS relative to low-elevation habitats (r = 0.61, P = 0.003). While our SDMs predicts an extensive distribution of both species across both protected and unprotected areas, it is important to note that nearly 80% of the Philippines is deforested. Our study identifies high-elevation protected areas as places where bumble bees may still thrive, and survey effort should be prioritized to these places to determine the status of Philippine bumble bees.

ZusammenfassungEine neue Gesetzeslage ermöglicht in Deutschland die ambulante Rehabilitation (Reha) und Nachsorge für Kinder und Jugendliche mit chronischen Erkrankungen mit Finanzierung durch die Deutsche Rentenversicherung (DRV). Für Kinder und Jugendliche mit Adipositas und ihre Familien sowie für die bestehende Versorgungslandschaft stellt dies gleichsam eine Chance, eine Herausforderung, möglicherweise aber auch eine neue Hürde dar. Es müssen innovative Konzepte entwickelt, erprobt und evaluiert werden. Für die ambulante Nachsorge nach stationärer Reha hat die Konsensusgruppe Adipositasschulung für Kinder und Jugendliche e. V. (KgAS) bereits ein Konzept entwickelt.

Bumble bees are an ecologically and economically important group of pollinating insects worldwide. Global climate change is predicted to affect bumble bee ecology including habitat suitability and geographic distribution. Our study aims to estimate the impact of projected climate change on 18 Mesoamerican bumble bee species. We used ecological niche modeling (ENM) using current and future climate emissions scenarios (representative concentration pathway 4.5, 6.0, and 8.5) and models (CCSM4, HadGEM2-AO, and MIROC-ESM-CHEM). Regardless of the scenario and model applied, our results suggest that all bumble bee species are predicted to undergo a reduction in their potential distribution and habitat suitability due to projected climate change. ENMs based on low emission scenarios predict a distribution loss ranging from 7% to 67% depending on the species for the year 2050. Furthermore, we discovered that the reduction of bumble bee geographic range shape will be more evident at the margins of their distribution. The reduction of suitable habitat is predicted to be accompanied by a 100-500 m upslope change in altitude and 1-581 km shift away from the current geographic centroid of a species' distribution. On average, protected natural areas in Mesoamerica cover ~14% of each species' current potential distribution, and this proportion is predicted to increase to ~23% in the high emission climate change scenarios. Our models predict that climate change will reduce Mesoamerican bumble bee habitat suitability, especially for rare species, by reducing their potential distribution ranges and suitability. The small proportion of current and future potential distribution falling in protected natural areas suggests that such areas will likely have marginal contribution to bumble bee habitat conservation. Our results have the capacity to inform stakeholders in designing effective landscape management for bumble bees, which may include developing restoration plans for montane pine oak forests habitats and native flowering plants.

In recent decades, many bumble bee species have declined due to changes in habitat, climate, and pressures from pathogens, pesticides, and introduced species. The western bumble bee (Bombus occidentalis), once common throughout western North America, is a species of concern and will be considered for listing by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) under the Endangered Species Act (ESA). We attempt to improve alignment of data collection and research with USFWS needs to consider redundancy, resiliency, and representation in the upcoming species status assessment. We reviewed existing data and literature on B. occidentalis, highlighting information gaps and priority topics for research. Priorities include increased knowledge of trends, basic information on several life‐history stages, and improved understanding of the relative and interacting effects of stressors on population trends, especially the effects of pathogens, pesticides, climate change, and habitat loss. An understanding of how and where geographic range extent has changed for the two subspecies of B. occidentalis is also needed. We outline data that could be easily collected in other research projects that would increase their utility for understanding range‐wide trends of bumble bees. We modeled the overall trend in occupancy from 1998 to 2018 of Bombus occidentalis within the continental United States using existing data. The probability of local occupancy declined by 93% over 21 yr from 0.81 (95% CRI = 0.43, 0.98) in 1998 to 0.06 (95% CRI = 0.02, 0.16) in 2018. The decline in occupancy varied spatially by landcover and other environmental factors. Detection rates vary in both space and time, but peak detection across the continental United States occurs in mid‐July. We found considerable spatial gaps in recent sampling, with limited sampling in many regions, including most of Alaska, northwestern Canada, and the southwestern United States. We therefore propose a sampling design to address these gaps to best inform the ESA species status assessment through improved assessment of how the spatial distribution of stressors influences occupancy changes. Finally, we request involvement via data sharing, participation in occupancy sampling with repeated visits to distributed survey sites, and complementary research to address priorities outlined in this paper.

Climate oscillations have left a significant impact on the patterns of genetic diversity observed in numerous taxa. In this study, we examine the effect of Quaternary climate instability on population genetic variability of a bumble bee pollinator species, Bombus huntii in western North America. Pleistocene and contemporary B. huntii habitat suitability (HS) was estimated with an environmental niche model (ENM) by associating 1,035 locality records with 10 bioclimatic variables. To estimate genetic variability, we genotyped 380 individuals from 33 localities at 13 microsatellite loci. Bayesian inference was used to examine population structure with and without a priori specification of geographic locality. We compared isolation by distance (IBD) and isolation by resistance (IBR) models to examine population differentiation within and among the Bayesian inferred genetic clusters. Furthermore, we tested for the effect of environmental niche stability (ENS) on population genetic diversity with linear regression. As predicted, high‐latitude B. huntii habitats exhibit low ENS when compared to low‐latitude habitats. Two major genetic clusters of B. huntii inhabit western North America: (a) a north genetic cluster predominantly distributed north of 28°N and (b) a south genetic cluster distributed south of 28°N. In the south genetic cluser, both IBD and IBR models are significant. However, in the north genetic cluster, IBD is significant but not IBR. Furthermore, the IBR models suggest that low‐latitude montane populations are surrounded by habitat with low HS, possibly limiting dispersal, and ultimately gene flow between populations. Finally, we detected high genetic diversity across populations in regions that have been climatically unstable since the last glacial maximum (LGM), and low genetic diversity across populations in regions that have been climatically stable since the LGM. Understanding how species have responded to climate change has the potential to inform management and conservation decisions of both ecological and economic concerns.

Indigenous knowledge is a multilayered knowledge system that can effectively manage global ecosystem and biodiversity conservation. Conservation is an applied discipline with the goal of preserving the world's biodiversity and ecosystems. However, settler–coloniser conservation practices often fail to fully examine how settler–coloniser epistemologies are centred at the expense of Indigenous conservation praxis. Evaluating how conservation practices outside of an Indigenous lens can become more inclusive and just is a critical area for research and reflection. We draw on our own experiences as early-career researchers working towards anticolonial, just and inclusive approaches to conservation science and practice by discussing what it means to be for a Place. We believe that a non-Indigenous conservationist who is for a Place advocates for inclusive stewardship with Indigenous Peoples and other marginalised communities to conserve species and ecosystems and the connections that bind communities to their landscapes. As an example of how settler–coloniser conservation practitioners can be for a Place, we discuss writing a policy statement in 2019 on behalf of the Society for Conservation Biology opposing the construction of the Thirty Meter Telescope on the summit of Mauna Kea, Hawai‘i. We describe the thought process behind our policy statement and provide examples of other actions for conservation researchers and practitioners working to be for a Place. We aim to provide our colleagues, particularly those trained in settler–coloniser conservation practices, an opportunity to identify more just practices for the Places we aspire to conserve.

Mass gatherings create settings conducive to infectious disease transmission. Empirical data to model infectious disease transmission at mass gatherings are limited. Video-analysis technology could be used to generate data on social mixing patterns needed for simulating influenza transmission at mass gatherings. We analyzed short video recordings of persons attending the GameFest event at a university in Troy, New York, in April 2013 to demonstrate the feasibility of this approach. Attendees were identified and tracked during three randomly selected time periods using an object-tracking algorithm. Tracks were analyzed to calculate the number and duration of unique pairwise contacts. A contact occurred each time two attendees were within 2 m of each other. We built and tested an agent-based stochastic influenza simulation model assuming two scenarios of mixing patterns in a geospatially accurate representation of the event venue —one calibrated to the mean cumulative contact duration estimated from GameFest video recordings and the other using a uniform mixing pattern. We compared one-hour attack rates (i.e., becoming infected) generated from these two scenarios following the introduction of a single infectious seed. Across the video recordings, 278 attendees were identified and tracked, resulting in 1,247 unique pairwise contacts with a cumulative mean contact duration of 74.76 s (SD: 80.71). The one-hour simulated mean attack rates were 2.17 % (95 % CI:1.45 – 2.82) and 0.21 % (95 % CI: 0.14 – 0.28) in the calibrated and uniform mixing model scenarios, respectively. We simulated influenza transmission at the GameFest event using social mixing data objectively captured through video-analysis technology. Microlevel geospatially accurate simulations can be used to assess the layout of event venues on social mixing and disease transmission. Future work can expand on this demonstration project to larger spatial and temporal scenes in more diverse settings.

An experiment was conducted to determine the effect of a concentrate diet containing Reed Sedge Peat (RSP) on nutrient digestibility, and serum glucose and insulin concentrations in mature exercised horses. The addition of RSP to the diet in horses may be beneficial to increasing nutrient digestibility and performance factors of the horse. Six stock-type geldings, ranging from 8 to 19 yr of age, in a duplicated 3 × 3 Latin-square design were fed a diet consisting of Coastal Bermudagrass hay and a concentrate with or without RSP. Three diet treatments consisted of: control, no RSP added (C); 4.5 kg/ton RSP added (RSP10; Kent Nutrition Group, Muscatine, IA); and 9.0 kg/ton RSP added (RSP20). The 12-wk study consisted of 3 21-d adjustment periods followed by 3-d fecal collections. Blood collections were taken pre- and post-prandial, before, and immediately following a Standard Exercise Test (SET) on d 21 of each period. Horses were fed hay at 2% body weight per day and 2.2 kg/d of a concentrate diet with or without added RSP. Representative samples of feed and feces were analyzed for dry matter, crude protein (CP), crude fiber, ether extract, acid detergent fiber (ADF), neutral detergent fiber, and ash content. Serum was analyzed for glucose and insulin concentrations by Michigan State University Veterinary Diagnostic Endocrinology Department.
