SUMMARY This study explores the geomorphological expression and geological context of a normal fault scarp in a stable continental region (SCR) which we interpret as having failed in large (Mw >7) earthquakes. Records of such large normal faulting events in an SCR (or even in more rapidly deforming regions) are extremely rare, and so understanding this feature is of international interest. The scarp is exceptionally well-preserved due to the extensive calcrete/silcrete cementation. In areas where this cementation is reduced or absent the scarp is more diffuse, as expected for a feature formed by one or more paleoearthquakes. The exceptional preservation aids comparison with data sets based on scarps which have formed more recently. Our analysis is based on a high-resolution digital elevation model of the Hebron Fault scarp in southern Namibia using pan-sharpened Worldview-3 satellite stereophotos (0.31 m resolution). We make scarp height measurements at 160 locations providing improved estimates of the average displacement (5.9 m), maximum displacement (10.1 m), and the minimum fault length (45 km). No consistent evidence of lateral displacements in water courses or alluvial fan margins were found implying predominantly normal displacement. A newly described section in the northwest has en-echelon scarps consistent with a component of strike-slip motion that may be explained by its difference in strike from the central section. Most channels crossing the fault show a single knick-point. The displacement varies smoothly as it crosses a number of different generations of alluvial fan surfaces. No evidence of a multiscarp or a composite scarp were observed. We have therefore found no evidence for a mutiple-event origin for the scarp, although, this lack of evidence does not conclusively demonstrate a single-event origin. Published regressions, based on the limited data available for SCRs, suggest that the mean expected average displacement ($\bar{D}_{\rm av}$) for a faults of this length is 1.2–3.1 m implying that the scarp is likely to have formed in 2–5 events with an expected Mw = ∼7.1 though displacements in individual events may exceed these average values. Comparison with the regional geology and aeromagnetic data sets suggests that the fault reactivates a Mesoproterozoic ductile structure, the Nam Shear Zone, and that the location, orientation and segmentation of the scarp is controlled by the alignment of pre-existing structurally weak zones with the present-day stress regime. The fault has undergone repeated brittle reactivation, accumulating ∼110 m of vertical offset since the deposition of the Ediacaran-to-Cambrian Nama Group. This is less than expected from global compilations of total displacement and fault length data, suggesting that the fault rapidly attained its current length by recruiting an existing weak zone and is expected to accumulate displacement at a relatively constant length in the future.

SummaryBackground: Insufficiency of anterior accessory great saphenous vein (AASV) with a competent great saphenous vein (GSV) is frequently encountered in patients referred for phlebological evaluation. The classic therapeutic approach to treat AASV insufficiency consists of crossectomy and stripping of GSV and all tributaries. In isolated AASV insufficiency, stripping of the AASV combined with foam sclerotherapy of the proximal AASV section is a useful alternative to preserve the GSV. Historically, the combination of phlebectomy and sclerotherapy in a single session was avoided given the perceived and reported risk of complicationsAim: A retrospective analysis of the side effects and complications following phlebectomy of the AASV combined with foam sclerotherapy in one session.Patients and method: Case records of all patients with isolated AASV insufficiency, who underwent a combined procedure (phlebectomy of the AASV and foam sclerotherapy) between 01.01.2013 and 30.11.2016, were evaluated. Results: 28 patients (29 legs) were included. There were no severe side effects or complications in any case. Complete occlusion of the proximal AASV could be demonstrated sono-graphically.Conclusion: The combination of phlebectomy and foam sclerotherapy in one session is an effective and safe treatment option in cases of isolated AASV insufficiency.

Background Livedoid vasculopathy (LV) is a rare cutaneous thrombotic disease. It is characterized by occlusion of dermal vessels resulting in livedo racemosa, ulceration and atrophie blanche. Clear guidelines for diagnosis and treatment are missing. Objective The purpose of this study was to better characterize epidemiology, clinical appearance and treatment reality of LV in a well-defined patient cohort. Methods The cohort was allocated within a prospective, multicentre, phase IIa trial that investigated the effect of rivaroxaban in LV. Results Analysis of 27 patients revealed that LV patients had an increased Body Mass Index (BMI; 11/27), hypertension (19/27) and increased levels of lipoprotein (a) (5/12) and homocysteine (10/12) in the blood. The female-to-male ratio was 2.1 : 1, and the median age was 53.0 years [interquartile range (IQR) 40.5-68]. Investigation of the clinical appearance found that 82% of patients had livedo racemosa, and the ankle region was most likely to be affected by ulceration (56-70%). The analysis of patient treatment history showed that heparin was most effective (12/17), while anti-inflammatory regimens were, although often used (17/24), not effective (0/17). Conclusion We add clinical clues for a data supported diagnosis of LV, and we provide evidence that anticoagulants should be administered in monotherapy first line (EudraCT number 2012-000108-13-DE).

Systemic sclerosis (SSc) is characterized by heterogeneous clinical symptoms. Peripheral skin fibrosis can be a common symptom. Nevertheless, a variety of diseases with different etiologies are associated with a thickening of the skin and make the initial diagnosis of systemic sclerosis more difficult. The different disease entities that can lead to dermal fibrosis should be differentiated. An earlier diagnosis of SSc would therefore be facilitated.A literature search was carried out for clinical pictures that can be associated with skin fibrosis. The clinical picture, the etiology and the treatment of the individual diseases are described.Diseases that can mimic the cutaneous symptoms of SSc include morphea, scleroderma, diabetic cheirarthritis, scleromyxedema, nephrogenic systemic fibrosis and eosinophilic fasciitis. The characteristic pronounced skin involvement, an accompanying Raynaud's phenomenon, capillary microscopy, histopathology and antinuclear antibodies help to enable a differentiation of SSc from its mimics. An early differential diagnostic distinction between SSc and other sclerosing diseases is important due to SSc-associated and potentially life-threatening systemic organ involvement. If a diagnosis of SSc has been made, a critical and organ-specific evaluation with respect to pulmonary, gastrointestinal, renal and cardiac involvement is mandatory and should be repeated at regular intervals.

SummaryIntroduction: The endovenous thermal ablation of the great saphenous vein due to varicosis changes the blood circulation in the groin. This could affect the venous drainage of the penis, especially the drainage of the corpus spongiosum over the external pudendal vein. There are a few cases in our clinic until now which had an enhanced swelling of the glans penis beside an erection. Objective: Is the enhancement of penile swelling caused by the targeted thermal ablation of the GSV without affecting the saphenofemoral tributaries in the groin?Material and Methods: To verify this enhanced swelling of the glans penis and change in the erectile function we want to ask 56 patients with a modified IIEF questionnaire. The IIEF is a validated questionnaire with a additional question for the swelling of the glans. We check the reliability of the additional question with 16 healthy males.Possible results: Hypothesis 1 (H+): There is an improvement of the erectile function. Hypothesis 2 (H-): There is a decrease of the erectile function. Hypothesis 3 (H0): There is no change of the erectile function. Schedule: 1.Preliminary assessment: Sept. 2014: ethical approval, Reliability of the additional question. 2. Main assessment: Oct. 2014 to May 2016. 3. Analysis of the data: May 2016 to Aug. 2016 4. Measurements of the cross sections for charged current deep inelastic scattering in e+p collisions with a longitudinally polarised positron beam are presented. The measurements are based on a data sample with an integrated luminosity of 132 pb^-1 collected with the ZEUS detector at HERA at a centre-of-mass energy of 318 GeV. The total cross section is presented at positive and negative values of the longitudinal polarisation of the positron beams. The single-differential cross-sections ds/dQ^2, ds/dx and ds/dy are presented for Q^2 > 200 GeV^2. The reduced cross-section is presented in the kinematic range 200 < Q^2 < 60,000 GeV^2 and 0.006 < x < 0.562. The measurements agree well with the predictions of the Standard Model. The results are used to determine a lower limit on the mass of a hypothetical right-handed W boson., 33 pages, 11 figures, 7 tables

Single- and double-differential inclusive dijet cross sections in neutral current deep inelastic ep scattering have been measured with the ZEUS detector using an integrated luminosity of 374 pb^-1. The measurement was performed at large values of the photon virtuality, Q^2, between 125 and 20000 GeV^2. The jets were reconstructed with the k_T cluster algorithm in the Breit reference frame and selected by requiring their transverse energies in the Breit frame, E_T,B^jet, to be larger than 8 GeV. In addition, the invariant mass of the dijet system, M_jj, was required to be greater than 20 GeV. The cross sections are described by the predictions of next-to-leading-order QCD., 33 pages, 14 figures, 8 tables

Isolated photon production in deep inelastic ep scattering has been measured with the ZEUS detector at HERA using an integrated luminosity of 320pb^-1. Measurements were made in the isolated-photon transverse-energy and pseudorapidity ranges 4 < E_T < 15 GeV and -0.7 < eta < 0.9 for exchanged photon virtualities, Q^2, in the range 10 < Q^2 < 350 GeV and for invariant masses of the hadronic system W_X> 5 GeV. Differential cross sections are presented for inclusive isolated photon production as functions of Q^2, x, E_T and eta. Leading-logarithm parton-shower Monte Carlo simulations and perturbative QCD predictions give a reasonable description of the data over most of the kinematic range., 23 pages, 5 figures (15 subfigures)

Foam sclerotherapy is well established in the treatment of varicose veins of different sizes.A literature review was performed to determine which specific indications for foam sclerotherapy exist.Treatment of venous leg ulcers, varices that might rupture, varicose veins in geriatric patients, pudendal veins and seroma could be determined as specific indications for foam sclerotherapy. In some indications, foam sclerotherapy is the treatment option of first choice. It is an effective and safe treatment option.

A new method is employed to measure the neutral current cross section up to Bjorken-x values of one with the ZEUS detector at HERA using an integrated luminosity of 65.1 pb-1 for e+p collisions and 16.7 pb-1 for e-p collisions at sqrt{s}=318 GeV and 38.6 pb-1 for e+p collisions at sqrt{s}=300 GeV. Cross sections have been extracted for Q2 >= 648 GeV2 and are compared to predictions using different parton density functions. For the highest x bins, the data have a tendency to lie above the expectations using recent parton density function parametrizations., 13 pages, 14 figures, 6 tables, DESY-06-116, submitted to Eur. A search for stop production in R-parity-violating supersymmetry has been performed in $e^{+}p$ interactions with the ZEUS detector at HERA, using an integrated luminosity of 65 pb$^{-1}$. At HERA, the R-parity-violating coupling $\lambda'$ allows resonant squark production, $e^+d\to\tilde{q}$. Since the lowest-mass squark state in most supersymmetry models is the light stop, $\tilde{t}$, this search concentrated on production of $\tilde{t}$, followed either by a direct R-parity-violating decay, or by the gauge decay to $b\tilde{\chi}^+_{1}$. No evidence for stop production was found and limits were set on $\lambda'_{131}$ as a function of the stop mass in the framework of the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model. The results have also been interpreted in terms of constraints on the parameters of the minimal Supergravity model., Comment: 24 pages, 11 figures, 1 table, Accepted by European Physical Journal C

Dermatology - Abstract

Cardiology and Cardiovascular Medicine - Abstract

The production of Z 0 bosons in the reaction ep→eZ 0 p (*) , where p (*) stands for a proton or a low-mass nucleon resonance, has been studied in ep collisions at HERA using the ZEUS detector. The analysis is based on a data sample collected between 1996 and 2007, amounting to 496pb -1 of integrated luminosity. The Z 0 was measured in the hadronic decay mode. The elasticity of the events was ensured by a cut on η max max is the maximum pseudorapidity of energy deposits in the calorimeter defined with respect to the proton beam direction. A signal was observed at the Z 0 mass. The cross section of the reaction ep→eZ 0 p (*) was measured to be σ(ep→eZ 0 p (*) )=0.13±0.06(stat.)±0.01(syst.) pb, in agreement with the Standard Model prediction of 0.16 pb. This is the first measurement of Z 0 production in ep collisions. © 2012 Elsevier B.V.

The production of the excited charm mesons D 1 (2420) and D2*(2460) in ep collisions has been measured with the ZEUS detector at HERA using an integrated luminosity of 373pb -1 . The masses of the neutral and charged states, the widths of the neutral states, and the helicity parameter of D 1 (2420) 0 were determined and compared with other measurements and with theoretical expectations. The measured helicity parameter of the D10 allows for some mixing of S- and D-waves in its decay to D *± π Π . The result is also consistent with a pure D-wave decay. Ratios of branching fractions of the two decay modes of the D2*(2460)0 and D2*(2460)± states were measured and compared with previous measurements. The fractions of charm quarks hadronising into D 1 and D2* were measured and are consistent with those obtained in e + e - annihilations. © 2012 Elsevier B.V.

Mantle flow can cause the Earth’s surface to uplift and subside, but the rates and durations of these motions are, in general, poorly resolved due to the difficulties in making measurements of relatively small vertical movements (hundreds of metres) over sufficiently large distances (about 1,000 km). Here we examine the effect of mantle upwelling through a study of Quaternary uplift along the coast of Angola. Using both optically stimulated luminescence on sediment grains, and radiocarbon dating of fossil shells, we date a 25 m coastal terrace at about 45 thousand years old, when sea level was about 75 m lower than today, indicating a rapid uplift rate of 1.8–2.6 mm yr−1 that is an order of magnitude higher than previously obtained rates averaged over longer time periods. Automated extraction and correlation of coastal terrace remnants from digital topography uncovers a symmetrical uplift with diameter of more than 1,000 km. The wavelength and relatively short timescale of the uplift suggest that it is associated with a mantle process, possibly convective upwelling, and that the topography may be modulated by rapid short-lived pulses of mantle-derived uplift. Our study shows that stable continental regions far from the effects of glacial rebound may experience rapid vertical displacements of several millimetres per year.

The exclusive photoproduction reaction γ p → ϒ ( 1 S ) p has been studied with the ZEUS detector in ep collisions at HERA using an integrated luminosity of 468 pb − 1 . The measurement covers the kinematic range 60 W 220 GeV and Q 2 1 GeV 2 , where W is the photon–proton centre-of-mass energy and Q 2 is the photon virtuality. The exponential slope, b, of the t dependence of the cross section, where t is the squared four-momentum transfer at the proton vertex, has been measured, yielding b = 4.3 − 1.3 + 2.0 ( stat . ) − 0.6 + 0.5 ( syst . ) GeV − 2 . This constitutes the first measurement of the t dependence of the γ p → ϒ ( 1 S ) p cross section.

For the first time, differential inclusive-jet cross sections have been measured in neutral current deep inelastic ep scattering using the anti-k(T) and SIScone algorithms. The measurements were made for boson virtualities Q(2) > 125 GeV2 with the ZEUS detector at HERA using an integrated luminosity of 82 pb(-1) and the jets were identified in the Breit frame. The performance and suitability of the jet algorithms for their use in hadron-like reactions were investigated by comparing the measurements to those performed with the k(T) algorithm. Next-to-leading-order QCD calculations give a good description of the measurements. Measurements of the ratios of cross sections using different jet algorithms are also presented; the measured ratios are well described by calculations including up to O(alpha(3)(s)) terms. Values of alpha(s)(M-z) were extracted from the data; the results are compatible with and have similar precision to the value extracted from the kT analysis. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. Summary Background Chronic venous insufficiency (CVI) comprises all symptoms caused by permanent venous and capillary hypertension. While the clinical manifestations of the disease have been well characterized, there is little knowledge on the skin barrier function in the affected patients. Objectives The aim of the study was to assess noninvasively the barrier function in patients with CVI stage C2 and stage C4 according to the CEAP classification in comparison with healthy controls (stage C0). Methods Thirty patients with CVI without concomitant diseases and 15 healthy, aged-matched controls were recruited for the study. The skin barrier function was assessed by measuring transepidermal water loss (TEWL), capacitance and skin colour symmetrically on the calf, medial and lateral malleolus, posterior arch (arcus venosus) and volar forearm. Results Compared with the forearm, there was a tendency for increased TEWL and significant reduction of capacitance on all measurement sites on the lower limb. Compared with the control group, the patients with CVI had significantly higher TEWL values on all measurement sites on the lower extremities while no difference in capacitance between patients and controls was observed. Conclusions Changes in the epidermal barrier function in patients with CVI are readily detectable by bioengineering methods as early as stage C2 and are manifested by significantly increased TEWL. Our results suggest that the reduced stratum corneum hydration in patients with CVI is due to anatomical differences rather than venous disease. These findings may help better understand the factors contributing to disease progression and its complications.

SummaryIn clinical practice sclerotherapy of intradermal varicose veins seems to be more effective in elderly patients. Patients, methods: After prior duplex-sonographic investigation 48 patients with intradermal varicose veins (diameter 1–2 mm, C1,EP, AS, PR) were included. 24 patients (group 1) received Polidocanol (0.25% Aethoxysklerol®) injection sclerotherapy and 24 patients (group 2) received sodium chloride injections. In all subjects an area of 100 square centimetres of the lower limb was treated. The borders of each area were marked and photo documented. The injections were performed by an examiner who was unaware of which liquid had been injected. Compression therapy was performed for one week after the treatment. One and four weeks later the results were controlled by the physician who performed the injections and documented by an independent photographer. The glossy prints of the areas before and four weeks after the treatment were sent to two blinded independent external reviewers. The reviewers noted their evaluation on a visual analogue scale (VAS). The reviewers received each anonymous photodocument twice within 3 weeks. Results: The VAS of both experts showed a significant difference between the results in group 1 and group 2 (p < 0.0001). Median of efficacy was 58.5% in group 1 (verum) and 0.5% in group 2 (placebo). Both experts had a stable intraindividual reliability of 85% and further both raters didn´t differ concerning their ratings. In group 1 (verum) the Pearson correlation coefficient showed a significant correlation between the therapeutic outcome and the age of the treated patients. Conclusions: Injection sclerotherapy of intradermal varicose veins using 0.25 %Polidocanol (Aethoxysklerol) is an efficient treatment that leads to a good aesthetic outcome. In elderly patients sclerotherapy is more efficient.

SummaryThe management of chronic venous leg ulcers is often sophisticated. The impact of pathophysiological findings of venous haemodynamics is relevant for the concept of the treatment in the individual subject. Thus elimination of reflux is thought to b relevant for the healing of venous leg ulcers. Mostly, patients with venous leg ulcers are elder persons with some relevant co-morbidities like diabetes, hypertension , cardiac or respiratory insufficiency. In many studies foam sclerotherapy (FS) has been shown to be an effective and safe procedure in the treatment of varicose veins. Therefore, FS plays an important role in the management of chronic venous leg ulcers in addition to compression therapy. We could demonstrate in a 18 patients that FS did not influence pulse rate and oxygen saturation. Very important is the aspect that FS can be performed effectively in patients under anticoagulation. The possibility to treat the patients in an outpatient setting with low costs and rapidly makes FS very attractive in comparison to alternative surgical techniques.

Deep inelastic scattering and its diffractive component, ep {yields} e{prime} {gamma}* p {yields} e{prime} XN, have been studied at HERA with the ZEUS detector using an integrated luminosity of 52.4 pb{sup -1}. The M{sub X} method has been used to extract the diffractive contribution. A wide range in the center-of-mass energy W(37-245 GeV), photon virtuality Q{sup 2} (20-450 GeV{sup 2}) and mass M{sub X} (0.28-35 GeV) is covered. The diffractive cross section for 2 < M{sub X} < 15 GeV rises strongly with W, the rise becoming steeper as Q{sup 2} increases. The data are also presented in terms of the diffractive structure function, F{sub 2}{sup D(3)}, of the proton. For fixed Q{sup 2} and fixed M{sub X}, xpF{sub 2}{sup D(3)} shows a strong rise as xP {yields} 0, where xp is the fraction of the proton momentum carried by the pomeron. For Bjorken-x < 1 x 10{sup -3}, xpF{sub 2}{sup D(3)} shows positive logQ{sup 2} scaling violations, while for X {ge} 5 x 10{sup -3} negative scaling violations are observed. The diffractive structure function is compatible with being leading twist. The data show that Regge factorization is broken.

The ZEUS micro-vertex detector (MVD) has been installed during a luminosity upgrade in 2000-01 the proton electron storage ring HERA. It has been reliably operated in the HERA-II run period from the year 2002 to 2007. The design of the MVD is described briefly. The tagging capability for charmed particles, obtained exploiting this detector is presented in this paper. The MVD is particularly important for resolving two shortly displaced vertices which are typical for decays of charm particles. Different charm particle decay topologies and the corresponding vertex finder techniques adopted are discussed.

The production of D-*+/-: (2010) mesons in e(+/-) p scattering in the range of exchanged photon virtuality 0.05 D-0 pi(+) with D-0 -> K-pi(+) and corresponding antiparticle decay were used to identify D* mesons and the ZEUS beampipe calorimeter was used to identify the scattered electron. Differential D* cross sections as functions of Q(2), inelasticity, y, transverse momentum of the D* meson, p(T)(D*), and pseudorapidity of the D* meson, eta(D*), have been measured in the kinematic region 0.02 < y < 0.85, 1.5 < p(T)(D*) < 9.0 GeV and \eta(D*)\< 1.5. The measured differential cross sections are in agreement with two different NLO QCD calculations. The cross sections are also compared to previous ZEUS measurements in the photoproduction and DIS regimes. (c) 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Summary Short-term fluctuations in the length of the day on the order of a decade are discussed in relation to fluctuations in westward drift of the outer part of the Earth’s core. Decreases in the Earth’s rotation rate noted near 1910 and 1965 are shown to be correlated with decreases in westward drift of the Earth’s magnetic eccentric dipole, which probably originates fairly deep within the Earth’s core. If the outer 200-km thickness of the core moves approximately as does the eccentric dipole field, the changes in angular momentum implied for this part can explain the observed changes in the length of the astronomical second, on the basis of conservation of angular momentum. Other estimates of westward drift in the core based on higher-degree harmonic terms give a lower westward drift, and also seem to show less precision in the estimates of flow in the core. These discrepancies are unexplained. Since quite early times it has been known that the Earth undergoes several small and little-understood motions additional to its motion about the Sun, the precessional motion, and the daily rotation (Munk & MacDonald 1960). Astronomical observations on the Moon and stars during the past century have shown that the Earth’s rotation is non-uniform (Brouwer 1952). Since the Earth’s total angular momentum changes very slowly during centuries of time, effects noted during only a few decades suggest that compensatory motions within the Earth’s interior would seem required when fluctuations in surface rotation are observed (Munk & Revelle 1952; Vestine 1952). The main possibility for such motions, which could yield internal angular momentum changes within decades, would seem to be in the Earth’s fluid metallic core. Accordingly it is of interest to estimate possible changes in the rotation of the core expected to compensate for fluctuations in angular momentum of the mantle indicated by changes in the length of day. Since the Earth’s field is thought to originate in a hydromagnetic core, the geomagnetic field lines may be firmly attached to the surface flow in the core. Therefore, field lines moving about on the Earth’s surface may show whether such compensatory motion in the core takes place. Previous work establishing such connection has unhappily been less certain than desired (Kalinen 1949; Vestine 1952; Smirnov 1965). Vestine (1952) showed that if the Earth’s eccentric dipole motion is monitored at five-year intervals since 1840, it undergoes a westward drift of about 0-30”/yr7 except for several five-year intervals centred near 1910, for which the westward drift is perceptibly reduced (to less than half), corresponding to an increase in the angular velocity of the core. This occurred at a time when the mantle and crust slowed down, so that the day became longer.
