Abstract

The waterborne polyurethane (WPU)/hydroxyethyl cellulose (HEC) chemical hybrids were synthesized by incorporating vinyltrimethoxysilane (VTMS) modified HEC (VC) into the WPU. Effects of VC on the contact angle, gel content, thermal and mechanical properties of the cast films, and biodegradation in cellulase solution were evaluated. It was found that the VTMS modified HEC provided the WPU with multifunctional crosslinks as well as conventional reinforcing fillers and biodegradability.

Abstract

Small phytoplankton are anticipated to be more important in a recently warming and freshening ocean condition. However, little information on the contribution of small phytoplankton to overall phytoplankton production is currently available in the Amundsen Sea. To determine the contributions of small phytoplankton to total biomass and primary production, carbon and nitrogen uptake rates of total and small phytoplankton were obtained from 12 productivity stations in the Amundsen Sea. The daily carbon uptake rates of total phytoplankton averaged in this study were 0.42 g C m−2 d−1 (SD = ± 0.30 g C m−2 d−1) and 0.84 g C m−2 d−1 (SD = ± 0.18 g C m−2 d−1) for non-polynya and polynya regions, respectively, whereas the daily total nitrogen (nitrate and ammonium) uptake rates were 0.12 g N m−2 d−1 (SD = ± 0.09 g N m−2 d−1) and 0.21 g N m−2 d−1 (SD = ± 0.11 g N m−2 d−1), respectively, for non-polynya and polynya regions, all of which were within the ranges reported previously. Small phytoplankton contributed 26.9 and 27.7 % to the total carbon and nitrogen uptake rates of phytoplankton in this study, respectively, which were relatively higher than the chlorophyll a contribution (19.4 %) of small phytoplankton. For a comparison of different regions, the contributions for chlorophyll a concentration and primary production of small phytoplankton averaged from all the non-polynya stations were 42.4 and 50.8 %, which were significantly higher than those (7.9 and 14.9 %, respectively) in the polynya region. A strong negative correlation (r2 = 0. 790, p<0. 05) was found between the contributions of small phytoplankton and the total daily primary production of phytoplankton in this study. This finding implies that daily primary production decreases as small phytoplankton contribution increases, which is mainly due to the lower carbon uptake rate of small phytoplankton than large phytoplankton.

Abstract

Ternary composites of rigid polyurethane foam (RPUF)/glass fiber/silica as well as RPUF/glass fiber have been fabricated from glass fiber, silica, polymeric 4,4′-di-phenylmethane diisocyanate (PMDI) and polyol using HFC 365mfc as blowing agent. Foam formation kinetics, morphology, thermal conductivity, glass transition temperature, decomposition temperatures as well as the mechanical strengths of the foam have been studied. With the addition an increasing amount of glass fiber cream time, rise time, gel time, tack free time, density, compression strength, thermal conductivity (k) monotonically increased while the glass transition temperature showed a maximum at 2%. At constant glass fiber content (2%), addition of silica further increased the process times, density and compression strength while the Tg and thermal decomposition temperature showed a maximum at 3% silica. The k value of RFUF/glass fiber composite decreased with the addition of silica up to 3%, where it was even lower than the virgin RPUF. However, beyond the content k value increased. Overall, the variation of k value with silica content showed identical tendency with cells size and closed cells content.

Abstract

Molded flexible polyurethane (PU) foams have been synthesized from polypropylene glycol (PPG) with different molecular weights (Mw) and functionalities (f), and 2,4/2,6-toluene diisocyanate (TDI-80) with water as blowing agent. It was found that the glassy state properties of the foam mainly depended on the urethane group content while the rubbery state properties on the crosslink density. That is, PPG of low MW and low f (more urethane groups) provided superior glass state modulus, strength, density, shape fixity and glass transition temperature (Tg), while that of high Mw and high f (higher crosslink density) showed high rubbery modulus and shape recovery. Consequently shape fixity of low Mw PPG decreased from 85 to 72% while shape recovery increased from 52 to 63% as the content of high Mw PPG increased from 0 to 40%.

10. Prognostic implication of platelet reactivity according to disease entity after drug eluting stent implantation: results from the PTRG-DES consortium

Abstract

Background Relationship between the level of antiplatelet effect and clinical event appears weak in East Asian patients. In addition prognostic implication of platelet reactivity may differ according to index presentation of disease entity (AMI vs. non-AMI). Methods PTRG-PFT consortium was established to determine the linkage of platelet function with long-term clinical outcome during DAPT (aspirin+clopidogrel) in DES-treated East Asian patients (n=11,714). Platelet reactivity was measured using the VerifyNow P2Y12 assay and its level was divided according to quartile distribution (≤168, 169–220, 221–271, ≥272 P2Y12 reaction unit [PRU]). Primary endpoints were incidences of major adverse cardiac and cerebrovascular events (MACCE) post-PCI. Results Impact of platelet reactivity on MACCE occurrence appeared proportionally increased irrespective of type of disease entity, but their relationship was relatively stronger in the AMI vs. non-AMI group (Figure 1A and B). The cutoff of high-risk platelet reactivity was lower in the AMI group compared with the non-AMI group (225 vs. 245 PRU), and the cutoff of low-risk platelet reactivity (immunity zone) was similar between the groups (175 vs. 170 PRU). In the AMI patients (28.5%), 3rd and 4th quartiles significantly increased MACCE rate (HRadjusted 2.19 and 2.24) (Figure 1C and D). However, 4th quartile only was significantly associated with increased risk of MACCE among the non-AMI patients (71.5%) (HRadjusted 2.19). Conclusion Close associations between platelet reactivity and MACCE occurrence were observed irrespective of type of disease entity. 11. The impact of statin treatment intensity after endovascular revascularization for lower extremity peripheral artery disease

Abstract

Purpose There are few Asian studies on the clinical impact of statin intensity on clinical outcomes in patients with peripheral artery disease (PAD). This study investigated the clinical impact of statin intensity in patients with PAD after endovascular revascularization. Material and methods From April 2009 to June 2019, 376 patients with lower extremity PAD treated with endovascular revascularization were enrolled. They were classified into three groups according to statin intensity: no-statin, low-to-moderate intensity (LMI), and high-intensity (HI) groups. The primary outcomes were major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE) and major adverse limb events (MALE). Results During the 40-month follow-up, MACE occurred less in the HI and LMI groups than the no-statin group (11.4% vs. 16.0% vs. 39%, p Conclusions HI and LMI statin use is associated with a significant reduction of MACE than no statin use. 12. Stent expansion evaluated by optical coherence tomography and subsequent outcomes

Abstract

Background Regarding stent expansion indexes, previous optical coherence tomography (OCT) studies have shown minimal stent area (MSA) to be most predictive of adverse events. Purpose We sought to evaluate the impact of various stent expansion indexes by post-stent OCT on long-term clinical outcomes, and hence to find OCT-defined optimal stent expansion criteria. Methods Of the patients registered in the Yonsei OCT registry, a total of 1071 patients with 1123 native coronary artery lesions treated with new-generation drug-eluting stents under the OCT guidance and analyzable final post-stent OCT were included. Stent expansion indexes and different suboptimal stent expansion criteria were evaluated for their association with device-oriented clinical endpoints (DoCE) including cardiac death, target vessel-related myocardial infarction (TVMI) or stent thrombosis, and target lesion revascularization. Major safety events (MSE) included cardiac death, TVMI or stent thrombosis. Results The median follow-up period was 40.6 (interquartile range 22.0–50.0) months. As a continuous variable, MSA, adaptive volumetric stent expansion (stent volume/adaptive reference lumen volume) and overall volumetric stent expansion (stent volume/post-stent lumen volume) were significantly predictive of DoCE. As a categorical criteria, MSA Conclusions This OCT study highlights that sufficient stent expansion to achieve adequate absolute MSA and relative MSA by distal reference lumen area and alleviate significant malapposition is important to improve clinical outcome, but overall stent overexpansion may have deleterious effect. 14. P200 Hepatic Steatosis but not Fibrosis is independently associated with poor outcomes in patients with Inflammatory Bowel Disease

Abstract

Background Increased prevalence of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) has been reported; however, the effects of NAFLD on the outcome of IBD remains unclear. We investigated whether the presence of NAFLD could influence the outcomes of patients with IBD. Methods We recruited 3,356 eligible patients with IBD into our study between November 2005 and November 2020. Hepatic steatosis and fibrosis were diagnosed using hepatic steatosis index (HSI) of ≥30 and fibrosis-4 (FIB-4) of ≥1.45, respectively. Primary outcome was clinical relapse, defined based on the following: IBD-related admission, surgery, or first use of corticosteroids, immunomodulators, or biologics agents for IBD. Results Prevalence of NAFLD in patients with IBD was 16.7%. Patients with hepatic steatosis and advanced fibrosis were older, had a higher body mass index, and were more likely to have diabetes (all p0.05). Conclusion Hepatic steatosis was independently associated with increased risks of clinical relapse in patients with UC and CD, whereas fibrotic burden in the liver was not. Future studies should investigate whether the assessment and therapeutic intervention of NAFLD will improve clinical outcomes of patients with IBD.

15. P919 Gut microbial signature and phenotype-specific Indicators in fecal microbiota of Korean patients with Inflammatory Bowel Disease

Abstract

Background The incidence and prevalence of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) in Asian countries have been increasing rapidly over the last few decades. This study was aimed to reveal gut metagenomic characteristics and identify a robust fecal microbial marker in Korean patients with IBD through a large-scale comparative study. Methods Gut metagenomic study using 640 fecal samples collected from patients with 523 IBD (223 Crohn’s disease [CD], 300 ulcerative colitis [UC]) and 117 healthy controls was conducted by 16S rRNA sequencing. Unsupervised cluster analysis based on the predicted functional genes was conducted. Microbiome Multivariable Association with Linear Models was used to determine relationship between metagenomic data and clinical metadata after adjusting for multiple covariates. Results Patients with IBD, particularly CD, had a significantly lower alpha diversity than the controls (p 2.0, p 2.0). Strong enhancement of the siderophores biosynthesis pathways, the aerobactin and enterobactin biosynthesis pathways (FDR Conclusion The present study adds to the growing evidence that the pathogenesis of CD is underpinned by the genus Escherichia-Shigella. Escherichia-Shigella may be a universal pathobiont in IBD, irrespective of ethnic and life-style backgrounds. Abundance shifting of Escherichia-Shigella and Faecalibacterium in fecal microbiomes is strongly linked with advanced behavior of IBD, which will have significant implications for future research on the diagnosis and treatment of the disease.

Abstract

Background The impact of radiation-related lymphopenia on clinical outcomes has been reported in various solid malignancies such as high grade gliomas, head and neck cancers, thoracic malignancies and gastro-intestinal malignancies but its impact is not clearly known in the context of common genito-urinary (GU) malignancies. Methodology To better understand the effect of radiation-associated lymphopenia in prostate and bladder cancer, we undertook this systematic review of clinical studies that have studied radiation-related lymphopenia in GU malignancies. A systematic methodology search of PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane library resulted in 2125 abstracts. Ten studies fulfilled the inclusion criteria which included any prospective, retrospective study or cohort study of prostate, urinary bladder, kidney, ureter, urethra, penile cancer in humans, and radiation should be part of treatment and intent has to be in definitive or adjuvant settings. Finally the study should have data on radiation-related lymphopenia. Results Four studies reported on the cancer-specific outcomes related to the lymphopenia. The incidence of low lymphocyte counts were documented in all the studies. Three studies analyzed the factors associated with the Lymphocyte depletion. Pooled incidence of severe lymphopenia was 29.25% and mild to moderate lymphopenia was 60.75%. Bone marrow volume receiving 40 Gy was associated with the incidence of lymphopenia. Conclusion One-third of the patients suffer from severe lymphopenia after radiation in prostate and bladder cancer. There are no clear data to support the correlation between severe lymphopenia and disease outcomes. Bone marrow dosimetry can affect the incidence and severity of lymphopenia. There is need of prospective datasets to identify the impact of radiation-related lymphopenia in GU malignancies focusing on long-term side effects, recurrence rates, and overall survival.

Abstract

Despite the modern advances in treatment techniques, the survival of locally advanced lung cancer patients continues to remain poor. Circulating lymphocytes have an important role to play in local immune response to RT as well as immune checkpoint inhibitors, and radiation related lymphopenia has been associated with inferior survival in various tumors.We undertook this systematic review and meta-analysis to evaluate the literature on risk and impact of lymphopenia in thoracic tumors. A systematic methodology search of the PubMed, Embase and Cochrane library was performed and eligible studies selected based on pre-defined inclusion and exclusion criteria. Review Manager Version 5.4.1 was used for the meta-analysis.Fourteen studies were included in the final systematic review and 10 in the quantitative analysis. Overall mean incidence of severe lymphopenia (absolute lymphocyte count 500) was 64.24%. The patients with severe lymphopenia were at increased risk of death with a pooled HR of 1.59 (95% CI: 1.40, 1.81, IRadiation related lymphopenia is associated with increased hazard of progression and death in lung cancer. Minimizing the lung and heart dose, especially in patients with concurrent other risk factors can reduce lymphopenia and potentially improve treatment outcomes in these patients.

Abstract

This paper presents results of an all-sky search for periodic gravitational waves in the frequency range [50, 1 190] Hzand and with frequency derivative range of approx. [-20,1.1] x 10(exp-10) H(sub 0)z s(exp-1) for the fifth LIGO science run (S5). The search uses a noncoherent Hough-transform method to combine the information from coherent searches on time scales of about one day. Because these searches are very computationally intensive, they have been carried out with the Einstein@Home volunteer distributed computing project. Postprocessing identifies eight candidate signals; deeper follow-up studies rule them out. Hence, since no gravitational wave signals have been found, we report upper limits on the intrinsic gravitational wave strain amplitude ho. For example, in the 0.5 Hz-wide band at 152.5 Hz, we can exclude the presence of signals with h(exp 0) greater than 7.6 x 10(exp-25) at a 90% confidence level. This search is about a factor 3 more sensitive than the previous Einstein@Home search of early S5 LIGO data.

Abstract

The isotope ratio mass spectrometer (IRMS) is an instrument that measures both of the elemental contents and isotope ratios of hydrogen, oxygen, carbon, nitrogen and sulfur in environmental samples at the same time. In this study, we want to try to get two main goals; first, to make up for setting the analytical conditions such as accuracy and precision, second, to apply for comparing of the carbon and nitrogen isotope ratio of sediments in the abandoned mine located in middle province of Korea. For the first goal, a recently introduced IRMS was used to analyze CRM (certified reference materials), which helped to make up the analytical conditions of carbon and nitrogen isotope ratios. So, the accuracy and precision of isotope ratios and elemental contents were also assessed simultaneously, and also the results were very satisfactory. The analytical results of carbon reference materials (EMA-P2) showed an accuracy of -2.801 × 10‰ ± 0.01‰ (2σ) and a precision of 0.009‰ in the mass range from 0.008 μg - 0.162 μg. For nitrogen reference materials (EMA-P2), an accuracy of -1.632‰ ± 0.72‰ (2σ) was obtained in the mass range from 0.082 - 0.162 mg. These values of accuracy and precision are higher than those reported by other studies. For the second goal, carbon and nitrogen isotopes in river sediment near abandoned mines were analyzed based on the established analytical conditions. The result suggested that carbon isotope ratios ranged from -22.5‰ - -7.5‰ and nitrogen isotope ratios from -1.9‰ - 7.9‰. By comparing the isotope ratios and sampling sites of sediment, we know that the nitrogen isotope values in samples of entrance area of mine are greater than those of the farm house area, which is indicating the effects of organic materials. So, we could guess that the newly accumulated organic materials were much more in the farm house area than mine entrance area. And a result of this study, the accuracy and precision tests of IRMS using certified reference materials were very satisfactory and optimum analytical conditions were established well. And also, it was found that the applications of isotopic analysis for environmental samples by using the IRMS could be very useful for the studies on tracing pollution sources.

Abstract

This study was aimed at evaluating the efficacy of different mineral separation procedures to validate the EN1788 (2001) European Union standard protocol for better identification of irradiated fish and shellfish. The silicate minerals were isolated with physical density separation method from two types of non-irradiated freeze-dried fish and shellfish that included Pacific saury (Cololabis saira), mackerel (Scomber japonicus), shrimp (Penaeidae metapenaeus), and mussel (Mytilus coruscus). Radiation-specific thermoluminescence (TL) peaks (glow curve 1) were observed between 150–250 °C. The peaks are typical for the irradiated food; despite the samples being not irradiated. Apparently it showed that the isolated minerals were contaminated with organic materials such as bone, etc. Acid-hydrolysis digestion was employed to remove the possible contaminants. Abstract

Fe-TiC composite powders are fabricated by planetary ball mill processing. Two kinds of powder mixtures are prepared from the starting materials of (a) (Fe, TiC) powders and (b) (Fe, TiH2, Carbon) powders. Milling speed (300, 500 and 700 rpm) and time (1, 2, and 3 h) are varied. For (Fe, TiH2, Carbon) powders, an in situ reaction synthesis of TiC after the planetary ball mill processing is added to obtain a homogeneous distribution of ultrafine TiC particulates in Fe matrix. Powder characteristics such as particle size, size distribution, shape, and mixing homogeneity are investigated. In case of (Fe, TiC) powder many coarse TiC particulates with size of several μm are unevenly distributed in Fe-matrix. The composite powder prepared from (Fe, TiH2, C) powder mixture showed a homogeneous dispersion of ulatrafine TiC particulates.

Abstract

This paper presents a study on Vane Tidal Turbine (VTT) focusing on analysis of two types of blade arrangement originated from the previous studies where the original design was examined and performance-tested for different numbers of blades (six, eight and twelve). Compared to conventional tidal turbines, VTT has several special features and potential advantages which have been being thoroughly developed. The purpose of this study is to analyze VTT’s capability of extracting and converting the hydrokinetic energy of tidal currents into electricity at given arrangement of blades (single and double rows, six and twelve blades) using CFD. From the calculation results, the six-blade single row turbine shows the best performance, in which the highest power and torque coefficients reach up to about 34 % and 36 %, respectively, at TSR=0.94. However, despite of lower power coefficient, by adding more blades, the torque’s extraction of twelve-blade turbine, especially the double row type, is less fluctuate than that of the six-blade setups.

Abstract

Porous three-layer mullite/alumina composites with a gradient in porosity and pore size were produced by a tertiary-butyl alcohol ice template technique. The porous products sintered at 1300–1500°C showed two types of pores, i.e. interconnected, unidirectional macro-pore channels and micrometre sized pores in the walls surrounding the pore channels. The layered materials showed superior compressive strength when compared with monolithic blocks, possibly due to the development of alternating layered structure with a gradient porosity and crack deflection along interlayer.

Abstract

SET (Samsung Enhanced hull for Tendon) TLP (Tension Leg Platform) has been designed as an innovative TLP hull form with optimized number of tendons compared to conventional TLP design. SHI (Samsung Heavy Industries) designed the SET TLP to have the minimized hull weight with narrow and thin pontoon which results in the less number of tendons without any outboard extension of column or pontoon. The SET TLP has 8 tendons which are evenly attached along with the octagonal shaped-ring pontoon. The unique shape of octagonal ring pontoon distributes the wave load and concentrated tendon loads in larger areas, which can minimize the structural reinforcement. To verify the feasibility of the proposed hull concept with regard to the hydrostatic/hydrodynamic characteristics and tendon design, the numerical analyses for the hydrostatic stability and global performance are carried out. Hydrostatic stability is investigated for all the possible loading cases such as float-off, wet transit, tendon installation and operational conditions, and the proper tank compartments are achieved for all the scenarios without using any temporary stability module. The global performance is validated for all the possible combinations of wave, swell, wind, current and/or squall for a site in Western Africa. Through the frequency-domain analysis and nonlinear time-domain analysis as well, the essential items such as the maximum offset/set-down/top tendon tension, minimum bottom tendon tension are examined and confirms that the certain design criteria of TLP operation are satisfied.

Abstract

New imaging technologies have been applied in endoscopy to improve the detection and differentiation of subtle mucosal changes using a digital contrast method. Among them, i-SCAN technology is the most recently developed image-enhancing technology. We investigated whether i-SCAN could improve the detection rate of reflux esophagitis. Interobserver agreement between endoscopists was compared with conventional white light (WL) endoscopic examination. We performed a prospective randomized controlled trial. A consecutive series of 514 subjects that underwent an esophagogastroduodenoscopy for health inspection were enrolled and randomized into the i-SCAN group (n = 246) and WL group (n = 268). An esophagogastroduodenoscopy with video recording was used for detecting reflux esophagitis, and reflux esophagitis were categorized by the modified Los Angeles (LA) classification. The total number of reflux esophagitis identified by WL and i-SCAN was 58 (21.7%) and 74 (30.1%), respectively. The diagnostic yield of reflux esophagitis was significantly higher (P = 0.034) in the i-SCAN group (30.1%) as compared to the WL group (21.6%). Using the modified LA classification, the detection rate of minimal changes was significantly higher (P = 0.017) in the i-SCAN group (11.8%) as compared to the WL group (5.6%), but the detection rates of LA-A and LA-B were not significantly different between the two groups (P = 0.897 and P = 0.311, respectively). After comparison of the interobserver agreement using randomly selected video clips, the i-SCAN group showed better agreement than the WL group (Kappa value, 0.793 vs. 0.473). Compared to WL endoscopy, applying i-SCAN in daily practice can improve the diagnostic yield of reflux esophagitis by detecting more minimal changes in the squamo-columnar junction of the esophagus and can improve the interobserver agreement of the modified Los Angeles classification.

We propose and experimentally demonstrate a tunable and switchable multi-wavelength fiber laser (MWFL) employing a semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) and twin-core photonic crystal fiber (TC-PCF) based in-line comb filter. An in-line Mach-Zehnder interferometer is configured by splicing a section of TC-PCF between two SMFs, and used as an optical comb filter in MWFL. The lasing modes are switched by adjusting a polarization controller in the fiber ring cavity, and the change is reversible. The proposed fiber laser can operate with two different lasing wavelengths spacing with a signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) over 28 dB. In addition, we also demonstrate a tunable multi-wavelength fiber laser operation by applying temperature changes to TC-PCF in the multi-channel filter.

Abstract

The hybridization system is applied to coat the guest soybean hulls to the host wheat flour and to use them as a doughnut formulation in order to decrease fat uptake. Results concluded that the low-fat uptake doughnuts might be made by a dry particle coating technique with different contents of soybean hulls, indicating that soybean hulls can form a protective layer between food samples and frying medium and can be used in the food industry as frying materials to reduce fat uptake.

HDDR treated anisotropic Nd-Fe-B powders have been widely used for the sheet motors and the sunroof motors of hybrid or electric vehicles, due to their excellent magnetic properties. Microstructural alignment of HDDR treated powders are mostly depending on the hydrogen reaction in disproportionation step, so the specific method to control hydrogenation reaction is required for improving magnetic properties. In disproportionation step, hydrogenation pressure and reaction time were controlled in the range of 0.15~1.0 atm for 15~180 min in order to control the micorstructural alignment of phase and, at the same time, to improve remanence of HDDR treated magnet powders. In this study, we could obtain a well aligned anisotropic Nd-Fe-B-Ga-Nb alloy powder having high remanence of 12 kG by reducing hydrogen pressure down to 0.3 atm in disproportionation step.

Objective The chorda-lingual (CL) nerve carries parasympathetic fibers to the hilum of the sublingual and submandibular glands (SMGs) and evokes the secretion of saliva. The effect of cutting the CL nerve on the biological processes in SMGs was investigated by examining the gene-expression profiles in the SMGs after a surgical parasympathectomy. Abstract

The separation of X and Y chromosome-bearing sperm is of use in many aspects of livestock maintenance. In this study, we sought to determine the difference in DNA content between X- and Y-bearing sperm, separate sperm into X- and Y-enriched pools, and assess the efficacy of sorting. Sperm collected from Duroc and miniature pigs were stained with 20.8 μM Hoechst 33342 and analyzed using a high-speed cell sorter. Measurement of the fluorescence intensity of stained sperm nuclei revealed that the X-bearing sperm of Duroc and miniature pigs respectively contain 2.75% and 2.88% more DNA than Y-bearing sperm. In total, 50.18% of the sperm were assigned to the X-sorted sample and 49.82% was assigned to the Y-sorted sample for Duroc pigs. For miniature pigs, the X- sorted sample represented 50.19% of the population and the Y-sorted represented 49.81% of the population. Duplex PCR was used to evaluate accuracy of sorting. A fast and reliable method for porcine sexing was developed through amplification of the sex-determining region of the Y chromosome gene (SRY). Oligonucleotide primers were designed to amplify the conserved porcine SRY high motility group (HMG) box sequence motif. We found that the primer pair designed in this study was 1.46 times more specific than previously reported primers. Thus, this study shows that the present method can be applied in porcine breeding programs to facilitate manipulation of the sex ratio of offspring and to achieve precise sexing of porcine offspring by amplification of the HMG box of the SRY gene. Crystalline tungsten disulphide nanoparticles were successfully synthesized by the chemical vapor condensation (CVC) method. The process performed as decomposition of tungsten hexacarbonyl over sulphur vapor in inert gas flow, where WS"2 nanoparticles were synthesized by direct reaction between as formed pure tungsten nanoclusters and sulphur vapor. Influence of experimental parameters on shape, size distribution, structure and phase composition of nanoparticles were evaluated by transmission and scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction analysis. The produced nanoparticles have closely spherical shape with the mean size in the range 20-70nm in diameter dependently of process parameters. Nested ''onion-like'' structure of nanoparticles was observed. The mean value of interlayer distance in the {0001} direction, is about 0.6358+/-0.031nm. Due to nanodimensional size, physical properties and layered structure tungsten disulphide nanoparticles have great potential as a solid lubricant material.

Nano-sized tungsten disulfide () powders were synthesized by chemical vapor condensation (CVC) process using tungsten carbonyl () as precursor and vaporized pure sulfur. Prior to the synthesis of tungsten disulfide nanoparticles, the pure tungsten nanoparticles were produced by same route to define the optimum synthesis parameters, which were then successfully applied to synthesize tungsten disulfide. Abstract

An additive of reactive hot melt adhesive (RHMA), thermoplastic polyurethanes (TPUs) was modified with neat sodium montmorillonite (Na-MMT) or Na-MMT intercalated with poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG), and their effects on the adhesion, rheological, and mechanical properties of RHMA were examined. The neat Na-MMT or Na-MMT intercalated with PEG (Na-MMT/PEG) effectively reduced the set time of RHMA, although the contents of neat Na-MMT or Na-MMT/PEG were less than 0.2 %. The increase of complex viscosity and pseudo-solid like behavior observed at low shear rate indicated that there were intimate interactions between RHMA molecules and neat Na-MMT or Na-MMT/PEG.

Abstract

In this paper, a new framework of a two loop disturbance rejection control and its design methodology are proposed. The framework consists of a robust internal-loop compensator (RIC) to eliminate disturbances and an external-loop controller to achieve nominal control performance. As the main contribution of this paper, we define the design problem of the RIC as a regulation control problem, then show that this new definition with the RIC structure provides more design flexibility and less implementation constraints, which allows us to design the RIC aggressively against a specific disturbance. This is verified through a comparative structural analysis with a disturbance observer (DOB) and an adaptive robust control (ARC). Two design examples of the RIC are given, along with practical issues that should be considered in the design procedure. The proposed framework is demonstrated by simulations and experiments.

Abstract

Nanosized titanium carbide particles were synthesized by the reaction of liquid magnesium and vaporized TiCl4 + CxCl4 (x = 1, 2) solution. Fine titanium carbide particles about 50 nm in size were successfully produced by combining Ti and C atoms released by the chloride reduction of magnesium, and a vacuum was then used to remove the residual phases of MgCl2 and excess Mg. Small amounts of impurities such as O, Fe, Mg, and Cl were detected in the product, but such a problem can be solved by more precise control of the process. The lattice parameter of the product was 0.43267 nm, which is near the standard value. With respect to the reaction kinetics, the activation energy for the reactions of TiCl4 + C2Cl4 and Mg was found to be 69 kJ/mol, which was about half of the value of the reaction with TiCl4 + CCl4, and the higher reactivity of the former contributed to an increase in the stoichiometry to the level of TiC0.96 and to a decrease in the free carbon content to below 0.3 wt %.

Abstract

Iron nanoparticles were synthesized without a chilling device in a condensation system of gases vaporized from iron pentacarbonyls as starting precursors. The size distribution of the synthesized iron particles was wider, namely, ranging from 10 to 100 nm, than that of the particles rapidly cooled on the surface of a chiller. The oxide shell thicknesses were analyzed quantitatively in synthesized powders, along with their microstructures and magnetic properties.

Abstract

The initial aim of this study was to examine the expression profiles of P53 and its upstream genes, downstream genes, and cell cycle regulators to determine whether these markers are useful for making a differential diagnosis among the benign, borderline, and malignant ovarian epithelial tumors. Between borderline and malignant tumors, the increased expression levels of P53, Bax, Cyclin E, and cyclin-dependent kinase-2 as well as the decreased expression levels of growth arrest and DNA damage (GADD45) and murine double minute-2 (MDM2) were significantly associated with malignancy (P < 0.01, each). Using the receiver operating curve (ROC), the most reliable cutoff value of the added-up staining scores of those markers was 4.5 with 79% sensitivity and 89% specificity for malignancy. Between benign and borderline tumors, the P21 and Bax expression levels were significantly higher in borderline tumors, whereas the Bcl-2 expression level was much higher in benign tumors (P < 0.01, each). Using the ROC, the cutoff value of the added-up staining scores used to discriminate between the two groups was 2.5 with 70% sensitivity and 74% specificity for borderline tumors. Thus, for the differential diagnosis between borderline and malignant tumors, the cutoff value 4.5 of the cumulative staining scores can be used. However, the cutoff value 2.5 for discrimination between benign and borderline tumors may not be useful because of its relatively low sensitivity and specificity. In addition, the P53, GADD45, Cyclin E, and MDM2 expression levels in malignant ovarian tumors might be useful for determining the histologic grade and type.

Abstract

A detailed investigation was conducted to evaluate the microstructural characteristics in samples of pure nickel processed using three different procedures of severe plastic deformation (SPD): equal-channel angular pressing (ECAP), high-pressure torsion (HPT) and a combination of ECAP and HPT. Several different experimental techniques were employed to measure the grain size distributions, the textures, the distributions of the misorientation angles and the boundary surface energies in the as-processed materials. It is shown that a combination of ECAP and HPT leads both to a greater refinement in the microstructure and to a smaller fraction of boundaries having low angles of misorientation. The estimated boundary surface energies were higher than anticipated from data for coarse-grained materials and the difference is attributed to the non-equilibrium character of many of the interfaces after SPD processing.

Nanocrystalline Nd-Fe-B powder was synthesized by a new thermochemical process that combined with past reduction-diffusion process and spray-dry process. In this process, Ca reduction process is vary important due to formation of hard magnetic phase from various oxides by Ca powder. Therefore, the final products are essentially affected a shape, size, and composition etc. of the Ca reduced powders. Ca reduction was performed to way that raw powders just mixed with Ca powder in proper ratio unlike to compress into compact. The powders after mixture-type Ca reduction mainly composited with phase even relativily low reaction temperature () and all particle size of powder were distributed less than 1 except for powder after Ca oxides as magnetic properties of powders after cake-type Ca reduction, with the consequence that high magnetic properties has been expected.
