Lake Superior is one of the largest freshwater lakes on our planet, but few optical observations have been made to allow for the development and validation of visible spectral satellite remote sensing products. The dataset described here focuses on coincidently observing inherent and apparent optical properties along with biogeochemical parameters. Specifically, we observe remote sensing reflectance, absorption, scattering, backscattering, attenuation, chlorophyll concentration, and suspended particulate matter over the ice-free months of 2013–2016. The dataset substantially increases the optical knowledge of the lake. In addition to visible spectral satellite algorithm development, the dataset is valuable for characterizing the variable light field, particle, phytoplankton, and colored dissolved organic matter distributions, and helpful in food web and carbon cycle investigations. Acts of violence are the fifth leading cause of nonfatal occupational injuries in the United States. Experiencing a traumatic event at work can have serious mental health consequences, including the development of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). This study aimed to quantify the prevalence of PTSD caused by workplace violence (WPV) in a statewide workers' compensation system and compare the outcomes and treatment of WPV cases versus those caused by other traumatic events. Using a retrospective cohort study design, workers who reported PTSD as the primary reason for a workers' compensation claim and had no coexisting physical injuries were found in California during 2009-2018. A total of 3,772 PTSD cases were identified, 48.9% of which were attributed to WPV. Demographic risk factors associated with WPV PTSD included lower income, younger age, female gender, and employment in retail or finance, p < .001-p = .007. For individuals who returned to work, claims due to WPV resulted in longer medically approved time away from work than non-WPV causes (Mdn = 132.5 days vs. Mdn = 91 days, respectively), p < .001. Three of the top 10 most frequently prescribed medications were administered against evidence-based guidelines. This study found that many treatments prescribed to PTSD patients are based on insufficient evidence, and the provision of existing empirically supported treatments is needed, particularly in generalized populations. The findings support the need for additional recognition of the cause of workplace PTSD to facilitate appropriate referrals to WPV or PTSD specialists to support return-to-work efforts., (© 2022 ReedGroup Ltd. In this work, we describe a simple solvothermal route for the synthesis of Eu 3+ -doped gadolinium orthovanadate nanocrystals (Eu:GdVO 4 -PAA) functionalized with poly(acrylic)acid (PAA), that are applicable as cell labeling probes for multimodal cellular imaging. The Eu 3+ doping of the vanadate matrix provides optical functionality, due to red photoluminescence after illumination with UV light. The Gd 3+ ions of the nanocrystals reduce the T1 relaxation time of surrounding water protons, allowing these nanocrystals to act as a positive MRI contrast agent with a r1 relaxivity of 1.97 mM -1 s -1 . Low background levels of Eu 3+ , Gd 3+ , and V 5+ in biological systems make them an excellent label for elemental microscopy by Laser Ablation (LA)-ICP-MS. Synthesis resulted in polycrystalline nanocrystals with a hydrodynamic diameter of 55 nm and a crystal size of 36.7 nm, which were further characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), photoluminescence spectroscopy (PL) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The multifunctional nanocrystals were subsequently used for intracellular labeling of both human adipose-derived stem cells (MSCs) and A549 (adenocarcinomic human alveolar basal epithelial) cells.

Objectives: Glycogen storage disease type 2(GSD2)/Pompe disease is characterized by respiratory and skeletal muscle weakness and atrophy, resulting in functional disability and reduced life span., Methods: We present an open-label, investigator-initiated observational study of alglucosidase alfa enzyme replacement therapy (ERT) in 38 adult-onset GSD2 patients (20 female, 18 male) with a mean age at disease onset of 36.2 ± 10.5 years. Mean delay between symptom onset and start of ERT was 14.5 ± 7.2 years. Assessments included serial Walton Gardner Medwin scale, arm function tests, timed 10-meter walk tests, 4- stair climb tests, modified Gowers' maneuvers, 6-minute walk test (6MWT), MRC sum score, forced vital capacities (FVC), creatine kinase (CK) levels, and SF-36 selfreporting questionnaires. All tests were performed at baseline and every 12 months for 36 months of ERT., Results: In the 6MWT we found 21 patients able to walk at baseline a mean distance of 312 ± 165.5 m, improving to 344 ± 165.8 m after 12 months (p=0.006), remaining at 356.4 ± 155.9 m at 24 months (p=0.033), and declining to 325.6 ± 174.8 m after 36 months of ERT (p=0.49, n.s.). The mean FVC in 28 patients was 80.27 ± 14.08% of predicted normal at baseline, after 12 months 79.19 ± 13.09%, at 24 months 78.62 ± 16.55%, and 77.19 ± 18.05%after 36 months. Only mean CK levels were significantly decreased by 8.8% (p=0.041). All other tests were statistically nonsignificant changed., Conclusion: Our data denote a rather variable course of neuromuscular deficits in chronic adult-onset Pompe patients during 36 months of alglucosidase alfa ERT.

Late-onset glycogen storage disease type 2 (GSD2)/Pompe disease is a progressive multi-system disease evoked by a deficiency of lysosomal acid alpha-glucosidase (GAA) activity. GSD2 is characterized by respiratory and skeletal muscle weakness and atrophy, resulting in functional disability and reduced life span. Since 2006 alglucosidase alfa has been licensed as a treatment in all types of GSD2/Pompe disease. We here present an open-label, investigator-initiated observational study of alglucosidase alfa enzyme replacement therapy (ERT) in 44 late-onset GSD2 patients with various stages of disease severity. Alglucosidase alfa was given i.v. at the standard dose of 20 mg/kg every other week. Assessments included serial arm function tests (AFT), Walton Gardner Medwin scale (WGMS), timed 10-m walk tests, four-stair climb tests, modified Gowers' maneuvers, 6-min walk tests, MRC sum score, forced vital capacities (FVC), creatine kinase (CK) levels and SF-36 self-reporting questionnaires. All tests were performed at baseline and every 3 months for 12 months of ERT. We found significant changes from baseline in the modified Gowers' test, the CK levels and the 6-min walk test (341 +/- 149.49 m, median 342.25 m at baseline; 393 +/- 156.98 m; median 411.50 m at endpoint; p = 0.026), while all other tests were unchanged. ERT over 12 months revealed minor allergic reactions in 10% of the patients. No serious adverse events occurred. None of the patients died or required de novo ventilation. Our clinical outcome data imply stabilization of neuromuscular deficits over 1 year with mild functional improvement.

Monoclonal antibodies were prepared against serotype 3 simian rotavirus SA11. Antigenic analysis of 18 hybridoma cell lines secreting monoclonal antibodies by radioimmunoprecipitation and Western blot revealed that seven monoclonals were directed against the major inner capsid protein VP6, four against VP3, an outer capsid protein with hemagglutinating activity, and one against VP7, the main outer capsid protein of the virus. The specificity of six monoclonals could not be determined. One monoclonal (1P14E2) directed against VP3 showed serotype 3-specific neutralizing activity. This monoclonal, which recognized only serotype 3 viruses in an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, could be useful in assays for serotyping rotavirus directly in stool samples.

Antibodies specific for the major outer capsid protein (VP7) of the simian rotavirus SA11 were obtained by immunization of rabbits with a synthetic peptide, Ser-Ala-Ala-Phe-Tyr-Tyr-Arg-Val, corresponding to the eight carboxy-terminal amino acids of the viral protein predicted from the nucleotide sequence of the gene segment 9 of the SA11 genome. As the carboxy-terminal region of the VP7 of human rotavirus Wa has an identical sequence, cross-reactivity of the raised antibodies was observed with this strain.

Rotaviruses were detected by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) in stool samples from 504 infants admitted with gastroenteritis to the children's hospital of the University Bochum in the period from 1979 to 1984. In most infants rotaviruses persisted in the stools for 6-8 days. Rotavirus RNA was extracted from stool samples from 203 infants. By acrylamide gel electrophoresis, bands characteristic of rotavirus double-stranded RNA were detected in 172 (85%) of these 203 samples in which the presence of rotavirus had been demonstrated by ELISA. Of the RNA-positive samples 87% had a "long" RNA pattern. Six different electropherotypes co-circulated and one electropherotype predominated for more than 4 years. In stool samples of one infant 12 genome segments were found, suggesting the possibility of simultaneous infection by more than one electropherotype or the occurrence of modification in the length of RNA segments during infection. In another infant the sequential infection by two different electropherotypes was observed.
