[Context] The details of the effect of the bar and spiral arms on the disc dynamics of the Milky Way are still unknown. The stellar velocity distribution in the solar neighbourhood displays kinematic substructures, which are possibly signatures of these processes and of previous accretion events. With the Gaia mission, more details of these signatures, such as ridges in the Vϕ − R plane and thin arches in the Vϕ − VR plane, have been revealed. The positions of these kinematic substructures, or moving groups, can be thought of as continuous manifolds in the 6D phase space, and the ridges and arches as specific projections of these manifolds., [Aims] Our aim is to detect and characterize the moving groups along the Milky Way disc, sampling the galactocentric radial and azimuthal velocities of the manifolds through the three dimensions of the disc: radial, azimuthal, and vertical., [Method] We developed and applied a novel methodology to perform a blind search for substructure in the Gaia EDR3 6D data, which consists in the execution of the wavelet transform in independent small volumes of the Milky Way disc, and the grouping of these local solutions into global structures with a method based on the breadth-first search algorithm from graph theory. We applied the same methodology to simulations of barred galaxies to validate the method and for comparison with the data., [Results] We reveal the skeleton of the velocity distribution, uncovering projections that were not possible before. We sample nine main moving groups along a large region of the disc in configuration space, covering up to 6 kpc, 60 deg, and 2 kpc in the radial, azimuthal, and vertical directions, respectively, extending significantly the range of previous analyses. In the radial direction we find that the groups deviate from the lines of constant angular momentum that one would naively expect from an epicyclic approximation analysis of the first-order effects of resonances. We reveal that the spatial evolution of the moving groups is complex and that the configuration of moving groups in the solar neighbourhood is not maintained along the disc. We also find that the azimuthal velocity of the moving groups that are mostly detected in the inner parts of the disc (Arcturus, Bobylev, and Hercules) is non-axisymmetric. For Hercules we measure an azimuthal gradient of −0.50 km s−1 deg−1 at R = 8 kpc. We detect a vertical asymmetry in the azimuthal velocity for the Coma Berenices moving group, which is not expected for structures originating from a resonance of the bar, supporting the previous hypothesis of the incomplete vertical phase mixing of the group. In our simulations we extract substructures corresponding to the outer Lindblad resonance and the 1:1 resonances and observe the same deviation from constant angular momentum lines and the non-axisymmetry of the azimuthal velocities of the moving groups in the inner part of the disc., [Conclusions] This data-driven characterization is a starting point for a holistic understanding of the moving groups. The Gaia-ESO Public Spectroscopic Survey is an ambitious project designed to obtain astrophysical parameters and elemental abundances for 100 000 stars, including large representative samples of the stellar populations in the Galaxy, and a well-defined sample of 60 (plus 20 archive) open clusters. We provide internally consistent results calibrated on benchmark stars and star clusters, extending across a very wide range of abundances and ages. This provides a legacy data set of intrinsic value, and equally a large wide-ranging dataset that is of value for the homogenisation of other and future stellar surveys and Gaia's astrophysical parameters. Aims. This article provides an overview of the survey methodology, the scientific aims, and the implementation, including a description of the data processing for the GIRAFFE spectra. A companion paper introduces the survey results. Methods. Gaia-ESO aspires to quantify both random and systematic contributions to measurement uncertainties. Thus, all available spectroscopic analysis techniques are utilised, each spectrum being analysed by up to several different analysis pipelines, with considerable effort being made to homogenise and calibrate the resulting parameters. We describe here the sequence of activities up to delivery of processed data products to the ESO Science Archive Facility for open use. Results. The Gaia-ESO Survey obtained 202 000 spectra of 115 000 stars using 340 allocated VLT nights between December 2011 and January 2018 from GIRAFFE and UVES. © G. Gilmore et al. 2022. Conclusions. The full consistently reduced final data set of spectra was released through the ESO Science Archive Facility in late 2020, with the full astrophysical parameters sets following in 2022. A companion article reviews the survey implementation, scientific highlights, the open cluster survey, and data products., Based on data products from observations made with ESO Telescopes at the La Silla Paranal Observatory under programme ID 188.B-3002. [Context] The Sagittarius dwarf spheroidal (Sgr) is a dissolving galaxy being tidally disrupted by the Milky Way (MW). Its stellar stream still poses serious modelling challenges, which hinders our ability to use it effectively as a prospective probe of the MW gravitational potential at large radii., [Aims] Our goal is to construct the largest and most stringent sample of stars in the stream with which we can advance our understanding of the Sgr-MW interaction, focusing on the characterisation of the bifurcations., [Methods] We improved on previous methods based on the use of the wavelet transform to systematically search for the kinematic signature of the Sgr stream throughout the whole sky in the Gaia data. We then refined our selection via the use of a clustering algorithm on the statistical properties of the colour-magnitude diagrams., [Results] Our final sample contains more than 700 000 candidate stars and is three times larger than previous Gaia samples. With it, we have been able to detect the bifurcation of the stream in both the northern and southern hemispheres, which requires four branches (two bright and two faint) to fully describe the system. We present the detailed proper motion distribution of the trailing arm as a function of the angular coordinate along the stream, showing, for the first time, the presence of a sharp edge (on the side of the small proper motions) beyond which there are no Sgr stars. We also characterise the correlation between kinematics and distance. Finally, the chemical analysis of our sample shows that the faint branch of the bifurcation is more metal poor than the bright. We provide analytical descriptions for the proper motion trends as well as for the sky distribution of the four branches of the stream., [Conclusions] Based on our analysis, we interpret the bifurcations as a misaligned overlap of the material stripped at the antepenultimate pericentre (faint branches) with the stars ejected at the penultimate pericentre (bright branch), given that Sgr just went through its perigalacticon. The source of this misalignment is still unknown, but we argue that models with some internal rotation in the progenitor – at least during the time of stripping of the stars that are now in the faint branches – are worth exploring., Funding for the DPAC has been provided by national institutions, in particular the institutions participating in the Gaia Multilateral Agreement. A., Context. In the last 15 years different ground-based spectroscopic surveys have been started (and completed) with the general aim of delivering stellar parameters and elemental abundances for large samples of Galactic stars, complementing Gaia astrometry. Among those surveys, the Gaia-ESO Public Spectroscopic Survey, the only one performed on a 8m class telescope, was designed to target 100 000 stars using FLAMES on the ESO VLT (both Giraffe and UVES spectrographs), covering all the Milky Way populations, with a special focus on open star clusters. Aims. This article provides an overview of the survey implementation (observations, data quality, analysis and its success, data products, and releases), of the open cluster survey, of the science results and potential, and of the survey legacy. A companion article reviews the overall survey motivation, strategy, Giraffe pipeline data reduction, organisation, and workflow. Methods. We made use of the information recorded and archived in the observing blocks; during the observing runs; in a number of relevant documents; in the spectra and master catalogue of spectra; in the parameters delivered by the analysis nodes and the working groups; in the final catalogue; and in the science papers. Based on these sources, we critically analyse and discuss the output and products of the Survey, including science highlights. We also determined the average metallicities of the open clusters observed as science targets and of a sample of clusters whose spectra were retrieved from the ESO archive. Results. The Gaia-ESO Survey has determined homogeneous good-quality radial velocities and stellar parameters for a large fraction of its more than 110 000 unique target stars. Elemental abundances were derived for up to 31 elements for targets observed with UVES. Lithium abundances are delivered for about 1/3 of the sample. The analysis and homogenisation strategies have proven to be successful; several science topics have been addressed by the Gaia-ESO consortium and the community, with many highlight results achieved. Conclusions. The final catalogue will be released through the ESO archive in the first half of 2022, including the complete set of advanced data products. We explore the predictions of Milgromian gravity (MOND) in the Local Universe by considering the distribution of the `phantom' dark matter (PDM) that would source the MOND gravitational field in Newtonian gravity, allowing an easy comparison with the dark matter framework. For this, we specifically deal with the quasi-linear version of MOND (QUMOND). We compute the `stellar-to-(phantom)halo-mass relation' (SHMR), a monotonically increasing power-law resembling the SHMR observationally deduced from spiral galaxy rotation curves in the Newtonian context. We show that the gas-to-(phantom)halo-mass relation is flat. We generate a map of the Local Volume in QUMOND, highlighting the important influence of distant galaxy clusters, in particular Virgo. This allows us to explore the scatter of the SHMR and the average density of PDM around galaxies in the Local Volume, $\Omega_{\rm pdm} \approx 0.1$, below the average cold dark matter density in a $\Lambda$CDM Universe. We provide a model of the Milky Way in its external field in the MOND context, which we compare to an observational estimate of the escape velocity curve. Finally, we highlight the peculiar features related to the external field effect in the form of negative PDM density zones in the outskirts of each galaxy, and test a new analytic formula for computing galaxy rotation curves in the presence of an external field in QUMOND. While we show that the negative PDM density zones would be difficult to detect dynamically, we quantify the weak lensing signal they could produce for lenses at $z \sim 0.3$., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ

We present a new test of modified Newtonian dynamics (MOND) on galactic scales, based on the escape speed in the solar neighbourhood. This test is independent from other empirical successes of MOND at reproducing the phenomenology of galactic rotation curves. The galactic escape speed in MOND is entirely determined by the baryonic content of the Galaxy and the external field in which it is embedded. We estimate that the external field in which the Milky Way must be embedded to produce the observed local escape speed of 550 km/s is of the order of a_0/100, where a_0 is the dividing acceleration scale below which gravity is boosted in MOND. This is compatible with the external gravitational field actually acting on the Milky Way.

We investigate, using the Gaia-ESO Survey internal Data-Release 2, the properties of the double sequence of the Milky Way discs (defined chemically as the high-alpha and low-alpha populations), and discuss their compatibility with discs defined by other means such as metallicity, kinematics or positions. This investigation uses two different approaches: in velocity space for stars located in the extended Solar neighbourhood, and in chemical space for stars at different ranges of Galactocentric radii and heights from the plane. The separation we find in velocity space allows us to investigate, in a novel manner, the extent in metallicity of each of the two sequences, identifying them with the two discs, without making any assumption about the shape of their metallicity distribution functions. Then, using the separation in chemical space, we characterise the spatial variation of the slopes of the [alpha/Fe] - [Fe/H] sequences for the thick and thin discs and the way in which the relative proportions of the two discs change across the Galaxy. We find that the thick disc (high-alpha sequence), extends up to [Fe/H]~ +0.2 and the thin disc (low-alpha sequence), at least down to [Fe/H]~ -0.8. Radial and vertical gradients in alpha-abundances are found for the thin disc, with mild spatial variations in its [alpha/Fe] - [Fe/H] paths, whereas for the thick disc we do not detect any such spatial variations. The small variations in the spatial [alpha/Fe] - [Fe/H] paths of the thin disc do not allow us to distinguish between formation models of this structure. On the other hand, the lack of radial gradients and [alpha/Fe] - [Fe/H] variations for the thick disc indicate that the mechanism responsible for the mixing of the metals in the young Galaxy (e.g. radial stellar migration or turbulent gaseous disc) was more efficient before the (present) thin disc started forming., 21 pages, 18 figures, accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics

We present new tools to establish axisymmetric equilibrium models of the Milky Way. The models we wish to establish are pairs (V,F) where V is the gravitational potential generated by the whole mass distribution including the dark matter, and F is the distribution function in phase space for late-type tracer stars. We present a set of Stackel potentials that fit some fundamental parameters of the Milky Way (mass density in the solar neighbourhood and Oort constants).
